Is the DHMIS Gem AU mostly wholesome like Steven Universe, or does it have some grim things happening to the main characters?

I'd argue Steven Universe has a plethora of really dark moments and concepts that get overlooked or aren't dwelled on too hard due to having Steven as the center focus, so in that way, yes, it's exactly like Steven Universe 😂 But in all seriousness, while the overall plot isn't as concrete and developed YET (mostly from being a relatively recent creation, compared to something like, say, my KGTV Gem AU, which is also significantly darker and flavourably edgier in terms of themes, but we're not here to talk about that) I'd say it's a lot more domestic slice of life than anything else. It's actually pretty close to the Orphanage AU in that regard, haha.

I don't wanna leave you with that short of an answer so, uh, here's some of my brainstorming attempt doodles.

Sketchbook is a glass prism because light refraction makes rainbows out of something that's clear, and drawing in a sketchbook makes something pretty out of empty pages. That's it, that's my logic. Theoretically Sketchbook could have been an iris agate as well, but I left that option for one of the fusions instead. Bit of an off-colour, but aren't they all…

Tony is a blue star sapphire, because sapphires in the show are associated with time through their future vision (or past vision, in Padparadscha's case) so it's reasonable to assume a star sapphire would be as well. Also an excuse to keep his face markings, to be honest. Not quite satisfied with the gem colour-wise but who's gonna stop me from taking artistic liberties on that?

Shrignold is a permafusion of a Rhodochrosite (associated with love, has variants that go from Sugary Pastel Pink to Raw Meat which I trust I don't have to explain in relation to Shrignold, haha) and an Aquamarine (considering the aquamarines already present in the show, butterfly theme and all), making a butterfly jasper (for obvious reasons).

Colin and Laptop are quartzes, because quartz is commonly used in computers and stuff (and to keep time!), at least as far as I know. It's a deviation from the show because I was never fond of the whole "every gem of this type has the same role and looks and body type and corrupted form" for quartzes especially. I had to actively keep myself from making them heinrichites because it looks like a circuit board and, well, you know. Computers! And for some reason I automatically associate anything lime green with Colin even though there is nothing lime green about him. But who knows, maybe I'll go back on that decision, everything I say is still subject to change. Gilbert is also there, by the way. He's an Azurite-Malachite.

Spinach Can is a moldavite, Lambchop is a red agate, Bread Boy is a bronzite, and I'm a bit on the undecided in terms of what Fridge ought to be. I sort of settled on scolecite. Didn't want to make it something as obvious as literal ice. Finally, Lamp Guy is a blue goldstone. It looks like a night sky, that's obvious enough 😂

Both Yellow and Special One are half-gems, a childrenite and a pink petalite respectively. Roy isn't a gem in this one, but you know me, I do love my AU variations, even if they don't ultimately lead to anything proper. He is inherently a citrine though, if you're wondering. And that's my favourite gem C:

DHMIS reversed

if the student trio were reversed with the teachers

this being either a reversed AU or the trio becoming twisted and acting revenge on the teachers who caused them so much pain, but with Roy being put into prison the teachers try to go and makes amend, the trio not making it easy for them at all

this is how their lessons would go:

Red guy/ harry: would teach you about regret, starting with how people feel about not doing things before it is too late, such as not going out in the rain as you were afraid to get wet, to seize every opportunity given, but then it goes darker of course where he starts going into regret of not going out to help/ save your friends and guilting you about not realizing what was happening before it was too late also touching on the subject that not every opportunity given is truly worth taking as it can be dangerous and put others in that danger. he would lead them into a room that is a maze of all the mistakes they made in their lives, at the end of the maze there are 2 doors, but are rigged that no matter which door they chose they would suffer antagonizing pain. his appearance hasn't changed other than wearing a scarf. during his lesson, he focuses more on Colin the computer since he has more of a grudge with him.

duck guy/ robin: would teach you about what happens after you die, but instead of what happens to the soul he teaches more of what happens to the body after it decomposes, how it will be cut open in search of what happened to cause the death, going further into murder and cannibalism, all the worse ways to die and making the “students” do all these horrible murders to each other. the only thing that’s changed about him is his appearance, wearing a hospital gown where at the end the middle of it is cut to his stomach where there is a line reveal poorly stitches where you can see blood and even organs poking out. he would focus this more on Paige the sketchbook, the food group, and tony the clock since he seemed to have more of a grudge to them

Yellow guy/ Manny/ Doi/: the world around you, how you view it and how it treats you that you get this idea of the world around them, focusing on a person mindset and how things can affect it.; staring sweetly, of course, talking how your mind at the beginning is innocent and filled with light and rainbows, only as it progresses the prior teachers would age fast, memories flowing fast into their minds going into subjects of PTSD and such, how no matter how much you try to bury it, it will always come back to haunt you, in the end, they have oil slowly leaking out of their mind, through their mouths, ears, eyes, nose before they drown it and their heads explode with oil spraying from their brains. Manny would have oil and black paint dripping from his hair and striped PJ’s he would wear during his lessons. he would focus more on shrignold and his cult, along with the lamp Larry since he has more of a grudge at them, but it doesn't mean he won’t go easy on the others either, he has no mercy regardless of his childlike personality and appearance)

at the very last minute, all the trio come together to inspect their handy work, saying that you can reminisce, you can apologies and you can beg, but what is done is done and there is nothing you can do to make amends and so you must suffer with the consequences forever

late but i want to hear about your hcs about larry

I don’t have that many headcanons but here are some of my personal favorites!

Larry is a robot, unlike the other teachers, who are human.

And because he is a robot, he’s much smarter than the other teachers.

And because he’s a robot, he has a lot of false memories, but those memories are based off the Original Larry, or rather, Lexi.

Larry has no siblings, unlike the person he’s based off (who is like the oldest of 6-) but he’s really good with kids.

Larry can eat food. Thank Colin for making that a feature of his.

Larry also glitches out a lot too. Blame Colin.

If you couldn’t tell, Larry was made by and programmed by Colin. It was a little experiment Roy put Colin up to. Did it work? You tell me.

Larry can change his eyes and hair color/style at will. That’s why you’ll see him with a swirled rainbow eye and a orange eye sometimes. I haven’t drawn the different hair colors and styles yet, but he can change that light blue cloud shaped hair to anything he so desires, whether it’s very long black hair or short and curly green hair.

He can also give himself freckles.

He doesn’t need to eat, but eating acts like a way of charging him, so he finds it useful.

Absolutely hates windy nights.

Also hates rainy nights.

It’s so loud when it rains and you can hear the wind and it annoys the poor guy.

Going back to the whole being a robot thing, Larry cannot be controlled by anyone. Not even Colin could control him. When Red Guy is messing with the panel, he’s messing with the Larry Puppet, not Larry himself.

Oh ya, Larry has a little Larry puppet. It’s basically the lamp. Normally he just likes to use it for light but it’s something that you can control, just like most of the other puppets.

Safe to say, Larry broke the lamp puppet after that incident. And the clock. And the butterfly. And the computer. And literally every puppet except the Sketchbook puppet cause the Skstchbook puppet had nothing to do with the DHMIS 6 incident. The Sketchbook puppet was with Harry actually.

Larry likes coffee. He drinks more coffee than anyone in the studio.

Larry’s gay and asexual. He likes guys but he just wants to cuddle.

He’s very interested in astronomy and astrology.

Like he teaches about dreams and all but he really wants to learn about the stars and planets.

Being based off a real person, Larry knows the college experience (Lexi has a teaching degree for psychology and anatomy) without ever actually going to college. It freaks Tony out, who’s in the middle of college right now (he wants to get a teaching degree for history)

Larry has probably seen every single episode of Spongebob with Manny.

This man has got a lot of time on his hands.

He doesn’t drink that often, but he still has the urge to. Blame Lexi this time.

The most judgemental robot you will ever meet. Back to blaming Colin now.

He will judge you for everything you do, and he will correct you when you say or doing something wrong.

He doesn’t understand sarcasm very well. It’s hard for him to tell if someone’s joking or not as well.

He has poor time management. He can spend hours on a task that would take five minutes.

He is very good at writing though.

He can predict people’s actions pretty accurately and it freaks them out so much.

Also easily broken and is difficult to repair. Not saying someone has broken him and Colin has had to fix him but-

Terrible sleep schedule. Can and has sleep into the afternoon.

This one isn’t related to Larry per say, but to an earlier version of him, but an earlier iteration of him was a lot younger (like 10/11 yrs old) than the ages I’ve done for current and past iterations of him (21/22 yrs old, 27 yrs old for Lexi)

The current Larry looks like he is 23 yrs old, and is often treated as such. In reality he was built like 2 or 3 years before the events of DHMIS happened.
