13th February 2019
We awoke fairly early and decided to go for a pre-breakfast walk along the promenade, as it’s the coolest part of the day. Surprisingly, there were loads of people about doing their early morning exercises, yoga, power walking and stretching. Fish was already being sold in the market, and we stood and watched a couple of men throwing hand nets into the water, but didn’t see any fish being caught.
Tumblr media
We wandered back to the hotel and had a pleasant breakfast and then got ourselves ready for a half day tour around the area with our guide, Glenn Roy Nash, an Anglo-Indian. He was very good, and took us to the Chinese fishing nets and we went onto the structure and had a go at hoisting the net, which was fairly strenuous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The “Pint of Science” t-shirt went down well and prompted a question or two.
He then took us to the market area where someone had arrived with some fish to sell, and we watched as the bidding went to and fro around the circle of bidders. Eventually the final price was agreed, and the winning bidder wrapped up his fish and set off for his own market stall where he would try to sell the fish at a profit.

From there we drove to the St Francis CSI Church, where Vasco da Gama was buried temporarily, before his body was exhumed and returned to Lisbon. The church has an unusual feature with what looks like a fabric curtain along both sides of the church, which in fact is a punkah, which was used to create a draught in the church on hot sultry days. The punkah is connected to a series of ropes which lead out of the church through a small hole in the wall, and in the old days the punkah wallah who sat outside of the church and pulled on the rope.
Tumblr media
From there we went to the Dhobi Khana, which is one of the main laundries for the area, and is a more modern version of the laundry that we saw in Mumbai. In parts of the laundry they iron the clothes with cast iron irons, heated by glowing embers of coconut charcoal. There was a wizened old lady doing some of the ironing, and she had worked at the laundry for 35 years. Joan was allowed to have a go at ironing, before we went outside to see where the clothes are dried.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The washing line was the same type of two-stranded rope as used by the laundry in Mumbai. On the way out we were introduced to Blackie the laundry dog, who has been adopted by the staff.
From there we went to see the mural paintings at the Mattancherry Palace Museum, which is famous for its murals dating from the sixteenth century, and depicting scenes from Hindu religion. Unfortunately photography was prohibited inside the room with the murals.
The same was true of the synagogue that we visited next, which was originally built in 1568, and is the oldest synagogue in the Commonwealth. It has been visited by the Queen, and more recently, Charles and Camilla.
We stopped off at a Kerala Cooperative store to look at spices and garments, and after buying a few items we left for the hotel and lunch. There was bad news when we went to the terrace bar for a cold beer and tapas, when we were told that the hotel had run out of beer and that they didn’t expect any fresh stocks for a couple of days. So a glass of wine had to suffice.
We had a leisurely afternoon, before heading off to the theatre for a performance of Kathakali drama. We arrived early to see the two main characters applying their complicated makeup.
Tumblr media
After they were fully dressed, the performance started with a demonstration by the main actor of all of the facial expressions that are used in the mime and dance routines. It was amazing to see how the actor could express certain emotions by moving his eyes, and twitching his facial muscles.
Tumblr media
Afterwards there was a performance by the two actors which recounted the tale of unrequited love, which ended tragically in the death of the woman, played by the original male actor. The mime was accompanied by a man on a drum who chanted some wailing song, and I think we were glad that we had seen the abridged version, as the full version runs to several hours and could have lasted until the following morning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From here we went to the Oceanos restaurant for dinner and had delicious red snapper baked in a banana leaf with various spices, and a Kerala fish curry, both of which were recommended by our guide, and he was spot on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We’d certainly recommend the Oceanos restaurant, as the food was excellent and very reasonably priced. Just as well that we’d booked a table as people were queuing outside for tables.
Tomorrow we’re off to the inland waterways and our houseboat adventure.

Dhobi khana public laundry by Tony Via Flickr: Day 95, Port 32, Country 17; Cochin, India: CMV World Cruise An extra stop off for our excursion was a local Dhobi Ghat, a public laundry. Inside we saw how the washing is cleaned by banging it, then dries in the sun. Finally the ironing room. Yes I was offered an Iron, I held my own and didn’t burn or rumple the cloth.
