It’s four in the morning and you’re standing outside Scotland Yard bundled up in your winter jacket, your hands wrapped around a takeaway cup of Costa hot chocolate. Greg leans against the wall beside you, sipping from the Vanilla Latte you’d brought with you. This is something the two of you do on weekends now because it’s the only way to see each other. He’s been Gold Commander for six weeks in a row and people are beginning to talk about what he’s done to piss the Superintendent off so much.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have asked.” You say quietly, your gaze downcast as your thumb taps out a rhythm on the cardboard ridges. “You’re allowed to say no, I won’t be mad.”
“It’s just unexpected.” Greg tells you, shrugging his shoulders before he removes the lid from the Costa cup. “If I say yes, if we go to this thing together, people will know we’re in a relationship. Are you ready for that?”
The event the two of you are talking about is the City of London Police Awards and Charity Gala. You’re one of the few officers up for an award, you’d been part of an operation last year that had taken down a huge modern slavery network with ties to several criminal organisations around the country.
“The question is are you?” You ask him, taking up residence on the wall alongside of him. “You know what Castor’s been saying, if we go together people will assume that you’re the man who broke up our marriage…”
“I don’t care about that.” He says, draining the remains of his coffee before setting the empty cup down on the wall beside him, the white plastic lid tucked neatly inside. “I want to be there, I want to see you win that award, I want to celebrate your success.”
“But…” You prompt and he tucks his hands into his pocket.
“You know I come out better from the story than you do.” He says, his eyes meeting yours. “I get a slap on the back for fucking the bosses’ wife and you get…”
You know what you get because that shit it’s already happening. It’s been happening since Castor transferred you to the nightshift in Whitehall, since he started telling people an alternative version of events.
“I am sick of hiding how I feel.” You tell him as you set your own takeaway cup down on the wall you’re leaning against. “I’m tired of letting Castor dictate the boundaries of our relationship. I love you…”
You trail off because it’s the first time you’ve said it out loud and now the words are out in the ether and you can’t take them back. There’s a few seconds of silence before Greg’s shoulder nudges against yours.
“You know I love you Kate.” He says quietly, his fingers entwining with yours. “You the best thing that’s happened to me in a long time, I just wanted to make sure that you’re ready.”
You tilt your head up towards him and he thinks you couldn’t be more beautiful than you are in this moment. He’s known how you’ve felt about him for a long time, but hearing you say it. You have no idea what that does to a man.
“I am ready Greg.” You tell him, his lips brushing over yours. “I want everyone to know you’re the man I chose.”

Lestrade x Male!reader - connection
- Lestrade x Male! Reader - Reader is a writer who knows a little too much detail about a particular case. Turns out the killer was following/using their story as inspiration. - @mxacegrey 💜
Sitting in the interrogation room, you frowned as you looked at the man in front of you and shook your head.
“I’m sorry, I haven’t a clue what you’re in about Detective Lestrade.”
“We found details of the crimes all over your flat!” He snapped.
You frowned a little and he tossed some photos on the table, letting you look through them and you shook your head.
“It’s a story…” you mumbled.
“Based on true events?” He snapped.
You shook your head and held your hand up, pulling your phone from the evidence bag you stepped away as he tried to grab it and quickly pulled something up.
Handing him the phone you sat back down.
“Look, I’m an author. It’s simply a crime drama I’m writing, I.. I didn’t do anything I swear to you…”
Lestrade looked at you and stared to scroll through your phone.
Aside from a few details that were different the story was the same, but when he got to the latest crime he realised there was more.
“I need access to everything.”
“Yes, whatever you need, we need to go back to mine.”
“Right let’s go.”
Lestrade rushed you back to your flat and you gave him and his team access to everything while you just stood in the corner waiting.
You didn’t know what else to do.
You didn’t do those crimes, but didn’t have anything to clear you name so this was all you could do.
Let them read through everything, whatever they needed, take anything they needed, because you had nothing else.
“Thank you, we’ll return everything when we can.” Lestrade said.
He rushed back to the station and you sighed, sitting in your sofa.
Without your work you didn’t know what to do, so you started to look at new book ideas you could get started on.
Lestrade spent hours looking into your work, and he was fascinated, curious, but he had to focus on the case at hand.
As more and more things unravelled he realised what was going on.
You were being followed, stalked and he had to act fast, without the rest of your manuscript god knows what the perpetrator was going to do.
Lestrade tried calling as he drove to your flat but he got no response and he pounded on the door waiting for a response.
You woke up, rubbing your eyes as you walked to the door half asleep and opened it.
“You’re in danger!”
Lestrade grabbed your hand and pulled you out of the flat, grabbing your keys he slammed the door shut and locked it and rushed you down to the car before spending away.
You were still trying to process what was going on in your tired state.
Lestrade drove you to the station and led you to his office and got you to sit down.
“The reason we brought you in first is because someone has been stalking you, using your work as a basis for their crimes. I believe they’re going to come after you next.”
You nodded your head and slouched down in the chair.
“So I’ll camp out here then…”
“We can get you a hotel room or something for now.” Lestrade said.
You waved your hand dismissively and got down on the floor, laying down as you closed your eyes again.
“Talk to me in the morning..”
With that, you went back to sleep and Lestrade just blinked in confusion.
He tried waking you up again but it didn’t work, so he covered you up with his jacket and just decided to stay there, focusing on the case at hand.
With everything they had now, it made it easy to catch the true person behind it all by morning.
They were using the same timeline you used and locations so they just had to wait.
As Morning came around, you sat up, stretching a little as you tossed the jacket on the chair and looked around.
“God my back…” you mumbled.
Standing up, you stretched and found the detective inspector looking at you from his desk a little grin on his face.
“Should’ve taken the hotel room.”
“Hey, I’ll sleep wherever I don’t care, but I’ll take that hotel room.”
He shook his head and slid your things across the desk.
“We’ve caught him, you’re alright to go home, but if you feel unsafe we can post someone at your door for a few days, have patrols for a few weeks.”
You slowly nodded your head, running your hand over your hair as you looked around before looking back at him.
“Yeah… that sounds like a good idea, for now..”
You didn’t want to take any more risks, so Lestrade dropped you off, and you invited him in so he could update you on everything.
You nodded as he spoke and sighed as you set two cups of coffee on the table.
“Maybe I should get rid of it then… after the court case obviously.”
“You can’t do that! It’s amazing!”
You blinked in surprise.
“You read more then you were supposed to.” You smirked.
He grinned sheepishly.
“Sorry, it was just really good. Don’t get rid of it just because of this.”
“You just wanna see the ending.”
“Maybe?”
Laughing a little, you shook your head and sipped your coffee.
“Keep in contact, I’ll write that ending for you.”
You got up and walked away, leaving Lestrade sitting there with a grin on his face because he was excited to see how it ended
