Twelve Months - Good Omens fanfic
Happy 31st Anniversary of Good Omens! :D
To celebrate this momentous occasion, I have posted a slightly-sad, slightly-sweet Wake the Snake fic on AO3, because our demon has been napping for a whole Twelve Months, and sometimes Angel gets a little lonely!
Thank you all for another fantastic year in this fandom!
--
Twelve months.
Aziraphale pushed open the door to Crowley’s flat, a simple shopping bag tucked under his arm.
The lights were still off, the curtains drawn in the awful empty room he called a study. Nothing had changed.
He passed through the enormous, rotating section of wall and into the solarium. This was still bright—many of the plants flourishing despite being unattended so long, despite clearly not having enough water. A few had started flowering. They waved their branches at him as he entered, perking up eagerly.
The angel waved back, but first he peeked into Crowley’s bedroom.
He was still where Aziraphale had left him, on his last visit a month before. Bright red hair spilled across black pillows, grown into a stringy mop. Duvet pulled up to his messily-bearded chin. One hand curled up beside him on the bed.
Still asleep.
With a sigh, Aziraphale crossed over to the plants, who greeted him excitedly, unfurling their newest leaves, a few vines hanging down to brush his face.
“Hello, my lovelies. How are you all doing? Look at you, grown at least a foot since I saw you, I’m sure. And you! What beautiful pink buds. Very impressive.”
He didn’t think Crowley would approve of how he spoke to the plants, but the poor things had been so distraught on his first visit, straining to keep upright, trying to hide their yellowing leaves. So much healthier now, much happier for just a bit of attention. He picked up the watering can and gave them all a quick splash. He didn’t know how much water each needed, but it didn’t seem to matter.
“You keep it up, dears. I’ll be back before you know it.”
Picking up his shopping bag again, Aziraphale headed down the hall to the kitchen. The kettle sat on the island where he’d left it, and he quickly refilled it and set it to boil. While he waited, he pulled his latest creations from the bag: a small pumpkin spice cake from a recipe he’d been perfecting since fall, a lemon coconut cake, and a few apple cinnamon muffins.
Two plates—a muffin for each, a slice of the coconut cake for himself and the pumpkin spice for Crowley.[1] The rest went into the refrigerator, where they would never go bad or stale.
Aziraphale put the plates onto a tray, along with forks and napkins. Next he found two mugs and pulled the little tin of his second-favorite tea out of the bag just as the kettle boiled.
For himself, a teaspoon of the expertly blended leaves, steeped for exactly three minutes, resulting in a pale brown tea with a slightly spicy aroma. For Crowley, he dropped a tea bag into boiling water and let it sit until it was almost black.[2]
He carried the tray back to the solarium and selected a bright red-and-gold tulip that was nearly vibrating in its eagerness to be noticed. A moment to assure the other plants that they were still doing fabulously—particularly a self-conscious little succulent that had rather drooped over the winter but was making a fine recovery—and he once more headed into Crowley’s bedroom.
Crowley had rolled over, and now sprawled on his back, sleeping soundly. He’d apparently kicked a bit, too, as the blanket had slid down past his stomach. Aziraphale smiled as he set the tray on the chair he’d brought in some months ago and got to work.
“It’s wonderful to see you again, dear,” he started cheerfully, carefully rearranging the objects on the little bedside table. “I have a few things for you again, I hope you don’t mind.” Just enough space to slide the mug and the little plate. Perfect.
“I received a package from Tadfield again. Everyone wrote a note and then gathered them all together, really quite clever. They’re all doing well, if a bit bored.” The table was nearly overflowing with little items now, brought in by Aziraphale to cheer the place up. Framed pictures of their human friends, quarantining with their families, clustered in one corner so tightly you could hardly see them anymore.
He pulled the latest out of the shopping bag. “Anathema has started a garden,” he explained, pausing to show the photograph to Crowley’s sleeping form. It showed the witch, kneeling outside her little cottage, working on growing several rows of herbs. “I got the impression she was off to a rough start, but she hopes to send us some mint in the next package. Although Newt warned me not to expect too much, as they’d already forgotten which patch is mint and which is oregano.” He set the picture with the others, and slid the potted tulip alongside it. “I’m sure she could use some advice from you, when you’re ready to share.”
“Nnnnh.” Aziraphale spun eagerly, but no, just Crowley shifting in his sleep again, rolling onto his side.
The angel paused to pull the duvet back up to Crowley’s chin, tugging it straight and smoothing a hand down his back. In a way, his friend was nearly unrecognizable, with that hair and ridiculous beard, but in another way looked the same as ever. That was always Crowley’s way, of course, constantly changing yet somehow always the same.
He lingered, taking in the shape of that face, leaning close, lips hovering above his cheekbone—
Aziraphale pulled back, quickly digging into his bag again. “Oh! Ah, the, um, the children have been making projects for their art class. This past month was sculpture, and they sent us some. Look!” He pulled out four little figures of oven-baked clay. “Ah, young Wensleydale has made a very clever model of a train car. Brian’s is…abstract.” He turned the next a few different ways. “And Pepper’s is, ah, either a very complex symbolic representation of the Patriarchy, or…a troll, I think.” They just fit on the edge of the table, all in a line, a very mismatched tableau. The fourth, on the end, was the best, in Aziraphale’s opinion. “Adam made a little Dog, and it’s very well done, don’t you think?” The canine figure posed with one leg raised and head cocked, ready to play, but the shadow it cast was just a little too large, too ominous, for such a small creature.
With a sigh, Aziraphale shifted the row this way and that. “I sent a letter to Warlock, over in America, but haven’t heard back since Christmas. I believe they’re very busy with something. Politics. You know how it is.” When the Dowlings had left England, they’d planned to return for a visit the following summer. A global pandemic had had other ideas.
“In any case, that just leaves Tracy and Shadwell. I understand he’s decided to hate the concept of literacy this month, so no word on how his war with the squirrels is going. And Tracy has declared she will spend the summer making a fairy garden. I thought her sketches looked very promising, and she promised to send us an update in June. I’m sure you’ll find it charming.”
“Hrrrrm.” Crowley sank under the duvet, nestling down a little deeper. Aziraphale smiled, settling into the chair with his plate and mug.
“Things are loosening up again,” he explained, taking a bite of cake. Delicious, if he said so himself. Sharp and not too sweet. “People are getting vaccinated, shops opening up. It’s really a lovely breath of fresh air, at least when you’re not wearing a mask.” A long sip from his mug, then he held it, fingers tapping. “It’s been nice walking through the park again, just in time for the baby ducks. And that record shop at the corner, they’ve had some wonderful new additions. Which reminds me.”
Putting aside his mug, Aziraphale dug through the bag again and pulled out a handful of square plastic cases. “They had a whole shipment of those little records the Bentley likes. Modern music. I picked out the ones with the rudest names. I’m sure you’ll enjoy them.” He pulled out the first disc and placed it atop Crowley’s phone. The device blinked in confusion a few times, then obediently copied all the music.
“Of course, it’s not all good news.” He stacked the rest of the discs atop the phone and returned to his tea. “Reopening means the customers are coming back. Yesterday, this one individual spent almost an hour browsing the same three shelves. And then he tried to make off with one of my books.” Another long sip. “Granted, he offered to pay, but still. What sort of establishment does he think I’m running?”
Aziraphale paused, waiting for Crowley to respond, not that he ever did. The demon’s eyelids moved a little, but no more.
Sighing, Aziraphale turned to his muffin. “You know, many times in the last year, I’ve wished you were there. Particularly during reopening phases. You could have posed as a customer, and then I’d be able to tell people I was at the capacity limit. Oh, and the people who would call to try and buy my rarest books. Collectors, or so they claimed, but then they just turn around and sell to anyone for twice the price! I’m sure you’d have some biting things to say about such people.” He smiled at Crowley’s sleeping face. “I’ve missed that, and your jokes. Rather more than I expected to.”
When his plate and tea were finished, Aziraphale set them on the floor and reached again into the bag. “Now, I have been attempting to teach my computer how to use the internet. I think it’s going quite well. Adam and his friends gave me a ‘homework assignment’ to find articles on recent news events, and I made the most wonderful discovery. Did you know that humans now share their news through humorous pictures? I printed out my favorites to show you.”[3]
He flicked through a few. “Ah, to start with, a few months ago there was this American politician with amusing mittens who showed up everywhere for a few days. It was extremely droll.” He leaned closer, holding them up for Crowley to see. “Ah, a few more from America. The murder hornets arrived, though by that point everyone had forgotten them. The election became increasingly confusing, and it all ended in a parking lot. For a little while everything was ‘This-or-That Total Landscaping,’ and before that everything was cake.” He showed a few extremely clever illusions. “I did try to make my own, but couldn’t manage it without miracles, which I felt was cheating.”
Really, leaning like this was starting to strain his back. Aziraphale shifted to sit on the edge of the bed, the better to share his pictures. “Ahhh. Also for a time everyone’s calendars were stuck on ‘March.’ And then earlier this year, a group of people learned how the stock market works, but sadly not how to spell it. The whole situation seemed very much like the sort of thing you’d be involved in. And…Oh, this angel from a television show was sent to Hell for…reasons.” He glanced at the shape beside him. Crowley had curled in slightly, pressing against Aziraphale’s back. “Yes. Various reasons. And then this musician, I suppose, went on his own. Both had many people extraordinarily upset.”
The next few images would really tickle Crowley, if he could actually see them. “The biggest news is that a large ship got stuck sideways in that canal in Egypt. Stopped half the world’s shipping for a few days while they dug it out! I’m sure you would have liked that very much. Exactly your sort of trouble. The humans were all very excited.”
The final photo was another of the ship, an image Aziraphale had made himself, printing out a blank version and writing on it in felt-tip pen. The hull of the enormous ship was labeled, “An eternity putting up with the tedious bureaucracy and frequently conflicting commands of my superiors until I begin to doubt my own judgement and sanity,”[4] while the small digger working steadily beside it was “Crowley.”
Aziraphale watched the demon beside him, not really expecting a reaction, certainly not getting one. He reached over, brushing brilliant hair back from Crowley’s forehead. “I think you’d have had rather a lot of fun last year. Or perhaps you’d have been upset you could only watch from a distance. Or…”
He’d leaned much closer than he’d intended, hovering just above Crowley’s forehead.
“Well!” Aziraphale stumbled to his feet. “I suppose that’s just about everything.” He picked up the tray from where he’d rested it on the floor, starting to re-load it with everything he’d brought in. Crowley’s cake and tea sat untouched, as always, but Aziraphale wouldn’t dream of skipping them. “We’re all very optimistic for the summer. Two months and everything should be just…just tickety-boo. Perhaps we can go for that picnic soon, if…yes…”
They’d made such plans for 2020. All the things they would do now they were free. Plans, and other thoughts carried in their minds, possibilities that would play out in their own time. Not too fast, just a slow, steady exploration of everything they could be…
“Well. Pleasant as that idea is, best not to—to plan too much, as the previous year made fools of us all. I just…” He turned away from the tray and watched Crowley sleep, hands clasped before him. “I miss you terribly. And I wish…very much…”
He picked up his shopping bag. One item still inside. The same one he’d been carrying for months, trying to find the courage to bring it out.
With a shaking hand, he reached in and drew forth a soft hand-made doll. He’d spent much of the winter on it. Simple white cotton for the head and body, wooly curls for the hair, and stiff white lace for the wings. Dressed in waistcoat and bowtie made from Aziraphale’s favorite tartan.
He still wasn’t sure why he brought it. He’d stitched several little toys, particularly a lovely black-and-red serpent with gold button eyes that had watched him from the sofa since November. But this, for reasons he couldn’t articulate, this one was for Crowley.
“I, ah…” He shuffled closer, doll clutched in both hands. “I made, um…” Back to the edge of the bed, one hand fumbling across the duvet. “…thought you might like…”
Crowley’s face stood out in stark contrast to the pillow, pale skin and bright hair. Aziraphale wanted to drink it in, memorize every detail, to hold him over until next month. The curve of his nose, the sharp angle of his cheekbones. His lashes flickering as his eyes moved. His lips, pursed ever so slightly…
“Bless it, Angel, are you going to kiss me or not?”
Aziraphale gasped, pulling back from the bright gaze of slit-pupil eyes. “You—you’re awake!”
“Nnnh. Half.” Crowley shifted, head moving across the pillow, eyes threatening to shut again. “Wouldn’t miss your visit.” One hand reached out, plucked the doll from Aziraphale’s unresisting fingers. “For me?”
The angel nodded. “If…if…you like it…or I could—I could just…”
Without a word, Crowley pulled the doll under the duvet and curled up, tucking it under his chin, a faint smile on his lips.
“If you were awake you—you should have said something! I’ve been going—going off like a fool all this—oh!” Aziraphale could feel his face turning hot as he recalled a few times his tongue had been a bit too loose for propriety.
“Mmmmmh.” The golden eyes were shut again.
“Crowley?” No response. “Crowley!” Aziraphale scowled. “Anthony J. Crowley, if you’ve fallen asleep again, I swear, I’ll—”
He’d do what? The angel fumed, but what could he really threaten? To stay away? Never.
“Alright then, I suppose I’ll see you in June. I’ve had several new requests for extremely rare manuscripts and I need to go pen some responses reprimanding these vultures for their cheek. I can—”
“You can stay.”
He spun around. Crowley had one eye barely cracked open. Gently, he pulled back the duvet, showing there was just enough space for Aziraphale beside him.
“I…I couldn’t.” But he stepped forward, not back. “I have business tomorrow, things to—”
“Just tonight then.”
His fingers brushed the mattress and pulled back as if burned. “You—you don’t really mean this, you’re just talking in your sleep.”
“Nah.” Crowley settled the doll by his pillow, making space. “Why else would I give you my key?”
“I…to…water the plants?”
“They take care of themselves.” Crowley held open his arms, eyes shut once more. “I missed you, too.”
Well. What could he say to that?
Aziraphale took off his shoes and slid into bed, into Crowley's arms. They wrapped around him gently as Crowley wriggled closer. “Mmmm. Y’r softer than the doll.”
“Oh.” He’d been called soft many times, generally as a way to imply he was a failure as an angel. But just this once, it made him feel rather pleased. “Soft is good?”
“Verrrry good.” Crowley twisted a bit, trying to find a comfortable way to rest his long limbs, and finally settled curled up against Aziraphale’s chest, tucked below the angel’s chin with a leg hooked over his knees.
The angel smiled. “And you’re…you’re noodlier than a stuffed snake. Err…”
A chuckle, just a stirring of breath across his throat. “Can’t wait to hear the story behind that.” Crowley nuzzled against his shoulder with a sigh. “Good night, Angel.”
Aziraphale swept the brilliant hair back again and bent down, pressing his lips to Crowley’s forehead. A soft, gentle kiss that made his friend smile a little more broadly. “Good night, my dear.”
Crowley drifted off again, burrowing close, as the angel continued to gently tease the back of his hair. Perhaps, he thought, perhaps tomorrow's work wasn't so very urgent. Perhaps a bit of rest would do him good. And perhaps...
Well. Don't plan too much. But for the first time, Aziraphale felt a bit of optimism about the coming summer and its possibilities.
“Sleep well, Crowley.”
[1] Crowley had invented pumpkin spice, and Aziraphale assumed he must like it. In truth, Crowley despised it, and regretted every autumn how it took over the entire world. He missed apple cider season. [2] Aziraphale had suspected since the early 1950s that Crowley secretly took his tea with several lumps of sugar, but would continue to pretend he didn’t know until Crowley confessed. Considering current circumstances, that was unlikely to be any time soon. [3] Aziraphale’s fax machine, revived after over three decades of disuse, had been somewhat confused to be asked to perform any task at all, much less to print memes onto photo paper with perfectly balanced color; but like the plants and Crowley’s phone, it couldn’t stand to disappoint the angel. [4] It was possible he hadn’t quite mastered this new form of communication.

Three Hints
Like I’d explained before this was just a no fun project for me. Yet, after I put it down and picked up again in a more ‘let’s just have fun with it’ mindset things got way easier. I’m actually kind of glad I waited a while to post these, because I’ve improved a lot and I feel like I can write these better now than I could forever ago. Hope you enjoy @just-chats :)
Second place should be out by at least Friday!
Tumblr media
There were three hints, simple sure, but even a dunce like him could’ve figured them out. Key word: could’ve. Kageyama could’ve, should’ve put two and two together, but he didn’t. Now he was stuck trying to figure out how to make things right as he mulled over the days events.
👑
The first hint was on his walk to class with Hinata.
They always caught up with them halfway and walked with him and Hinata until they reached their classroom.
“Tobio,” a familiar voice called out behind him and Hinata.
He slowed his pace enough so they could catch up, as usual, blushing as they slipped their hand into his and walked alongside him. They started up a friendly conversation with Hinata, who was more than happy to join in. Occasionally they would slip him a knowing glance under their eyelashes, making a little pit settle in his stomach each time they did so.
Weird…
The looks continued on with more frequency as the three of them got closer and closer to their classroom. He couldn’t help but feel like there was something he was forgetting, something… important…
They would tell him straight up, right?
👑
The second was at lunch.
He was sitting outside where he normally would, eating whatever he had packed that day and thinking about volleyball. He hadn’t even noticed they’d joined him until they gave him a little peck on his cheek, snapping him out of whatever daydream he was in. They took his shock as time to cuddle into his side and steal some of his chips.
Definitely strange…
They’d never really eaten lunch with him, preferring to spend time with their friends — which was absolutely fine with him. He was happy to be around them anyway, but then again, they were never this affectionate with him. The two of them had only kissed once, and that had mostly been an accident caused by a certain libero. However, if they really wanted to cuddle up to him, he wasn’t exactly opposed to the idea. He would’ve liked a warning.
“Why’re you so cuddly today,” he asked bluntly.
They just laughed and shook their head, “Just felt like cuddling my boyfriend, there’s nothing wrong with that, right?”
He supposed, they’d always tell him if they wanted something.
👑
The third was after school, right before practice started.
Like normal, he’d waited outside of their classroom to walk them to the gym. They seemed a bit… fidgety… but he could’ve been imagining things. After all, they’d been acting up all day and they told him things were fine, so who was he to doubt them? Other than their strange behavior while they were walking, nothing really seemed off until they pulled him aside during a water break.
What a strange thing for them to do…
“Tobio, uh, do you know what today is,” they asked quietly.
He quirked his head to the side, “It’s Wednesday, why?”
“No,” they said quickly, “I mean, do you know… what’s special about today?”
He shook his head, nothing special was going on through school — practice was normal too. There wasn’t anything particularly interesting about today at all as far as he was aware.
The sad look on their face, however, made him feel that he was very wrong.
“What’s wrong-“
“It’s nothing, Tobio, go back to practice, ‘kay? I’m gonna head home alone today.”
“Why?”
“Mom wants me home early, I’ll text you when I get there…” they pressed a kiss to his cheek, and like that they were gone.
👑
He spent the rest of practice trying to figure out what was wrong. Had he done something wrong? He definately forgot something, but what?
By the time practice was over he was a ball of anxiety that could challenge Yamaguchi himself. He just couldn’t figure out what it is he’d done wrong at all.
Luckily (read: unluckily) Tsukishima knew, and he was happy to tell him exactly what he’d done wrong.
“Your anniversary,” he said with a glare.
“Wha-“
“You forgot your one year anniversary, the one they’ve been talking about non-stop?”
The shit eating grin that grew on his face as realization sunk in made Kageyama want to punch him. However, they were already angry enough with him, he didn’t need them pissed because he beat the snot out of their best friend. He had to figure out how to fix his mistake.
👑
That lead him to where he was right now, staring blankly at the very expensive jewelry in front of him. He didn’t even know if they would like a necklace or not, he was just desperate to right his wrong.
Then out of the corner of his eye, he spotted it. He’s not even sure how since it was so plain compared to all the expensive shops around, but it was a little shop on the corner.
They’d taken him into it a few times, always saying it was their favorite around town. How it sold the best sweets they’d ever had… and, well, it was worth a shot at this point. So, he turned on his heel and ran over to the shop as quickly as he could. He grabbed as much chocolate as he could, which was a lot, and then ran like a madman over to their house.
He really hoped this chocolate would be enough, because all he wanted to do was give them a hug and tell them how much he loved them even though he messed up. Which is why the second they opened their door he shoved chocolate into their face.
“I’msorryIforgotouranniversarypleaseforgivemeIloveyou!” He said in one breath.
“Woah, woah, slow down,” they said taking the chocolates out of his hands.
“I-I’m sorry,” he repeated simply as they looked down at his gift, “I hope this was enough… I wasn’t sure what else I could get you…”
They smiled at him, “It’s perfect, I can’t believe you remembered they’re my favorite.”
There was a pregnant pause, both of them staring at the other silently before they decided to speak up.
“Uh, listen, I’m also sorry… I should’ve just told you right away instead of being dramatic about it,” they chuckled.
“I should’ve remembered in the first place,” he retorted.
“You know, I don’t really care all that much anymore… honestly I just wanna hold you and stuff, I didn’t like being angry with you.”
He blushed and offered them one of his rare smiles, “Then, why don’t you let me in so we can… do that.”
They giggled and stepped aside, “Yeah, I’d like that a lot…”

When your business professor had first posted the list of partners for the big final project online, your heart had skipped a beat. Right there beside your name was a name you’d never expected to see: Lee Chaeyoung. Slowly, you had closed the tab, rubbing a hand over your face and letting out a worried groan. Why her?
Lee Chaeyoung had a reputation. It wasn’t like you didn’t like her, quite the opposite really. She was strikingly beautiful with a wide smile and a loud voice and the best hair you’d ever laid eyes on. But her eyes seemed to dig into your soul whenever you glanced at her in class, and you’d been intimidated by her ever since you saw her the first day of your freshman year. She was tall and tough and she told it like it was and didn’t seem to care what other people thought of her. Between her beauty and her tough exterior, it was hard for you to talk to her, much less to do an entire project with her. But you really had no choice: the professor had spoken.
Sighing, you had leaned back in your chair and closed your eyes. You could do this. You needed this A.
-
At first, things were awkward. You’d said maybe twenty words total to her over the time the two of you had gone to the same school, so when you sat down across from her in the library, neither of you really knew what to talk about. For a moment, you both just sat silently, before she cleared her throat and spoke up.
“I think we’ve had some classes together but I’ve never really talked to you. So I’m Chaeyoung.” She held out her hand and you resisted the urge to say that you knew as you shook her hand and gave her a nervous smile.
“I’m (Y/N). Nice to officially meet you.” Good. You didn’t sound like you were about to have a heart attack. She shifted in her chair and looked down at her notebook on the table, then back up at you, shoving her elbow onto the table and leaning her head on her hand. Her sigh made you jump.
“So what do you want to do this project on? I heard that Saerom and her partner are already making a coffee shop, so I’m out of ideas. This is my least favorite part of the semester. I hate this stuff.”
“Me too,” you said truthfully. The big projects always sucked. “Um, how about we try to think about what we’re interested in? Then we can see if we have anything and we can go from there.”
She raised her eyebrows and for a moment you were afraid she’d tell you that it was a dumb idea, but then she sat up and nodded. “That sounds like it’ll work.
Breathing a sigh of relief that you hoped was discreet, you gave her another smile. “Cool. Do you want to start then?
As it turned out, the two of you had a lot in common. Some of the awkwardness began to dissipate, despite your nervousness. Her smile seemed a lot less intimidating as she exclaimed that she was interested in one of your hobbies too, and the conversation began to flow more naturally. Chaeyoung was so loud that you were occasionally afraid of being kicked out and were glad the two of you weren’t in the quiet study area, but the two of you got along just fine.
By the time you left the library that day, the two of you had already decided to work on an after-school sports program, and you had a better understanding of Chaeyoung. She was still intimidating, but now the pounding of your heart at the sight of her smile was for a totally different reason.
-
It was strange to see and talk to Chaeyoung so much. Every time her name appeared on your phone screen, your heart jumped a bit, and now she even occasionally sat next to you in class, slumping down into her chair and greeting you with her loud voice and big smile. The most you saw her was outside of class, though. You had gotten used to library Chaeyoung: she was a bit quieter and a bit more focused on work. The library became the normal meeting spot, and that was good. Safe. Easy.
So, you weren’t expecting her to turn around in her chair after class and raise her eyebrows. “Since finals are making the library packed, want to study at your place?” It seemed like she read your mind as she added, “we can’t go to my place, my roommate is hosting a study group so it’ll be crowded.”
Your chest squeezed with nervousness as you bit your lip. You weren’t sure you were ready for this, but Chaeyoung was looking at you with raised eyebrows, expecting you to reply, so you swallowed and nodded your head. “Uh, sure.”
“Great!” She grinned. “I’ll meet you after your last class outside the library and we’ll go from there.” She then turned back around in her chair, leaving you to stare at her back as your mind raced. Chaeyoung was going to be in your house.
Your heart pounding, you took out your phone and sent a desperate text to your roommate, hoping that they got the hint to clean up a bit.
-
Chaeyoung was looking up at the now-cloudy sky as you walked up to the library. At the sound of your footsteps, she turned her head, and you caught a glimpse of fleeting worry before she put a smile on her face.
“You’re late, dude. What’s up with that?”
“Class ran long,” you said, glancing up at the clouds. “We should probably hurry. It looks like it’s going to rain soon.”
“No kidding.” The worry was back for a second as she shook her head. “I didn’t bring an umbrella today either.”
“I live close, if we start walking now we should be okay.”
“Okay.” She waited for you to start walking, then fell into step beside you. “I really hope it doesn’t storm.” She wrapped her arms around herself as she spoke, and you couldn’t help thinking that it was almost cute. You spared her another glance, surprised yet happy to see this side of her, and smiled.
“I don’t think it’ll be that bad.”
-
Unfortunately, you were wrong. Almost as soon as the two of you were settled down in your room with your notes out on the floor, rain started to pour from the sky. The consistent drum drew you to look out the window, just in time to see a flash of lightning in the sky.
“Whoa, it’s really bad out there. Where did this come from?” You turned around and saw Chaeyoung flinch at the sight of the lightning. Then, as thunder rumbled in the sky, its low growl shaking the building, she squeaked and pulled her hood up over her head, shivering.
For a moment, you stood amazed. The girl you’d been so intimidated by for so long was cowering away from the thunder on your floor. This was a side of her that you’d never seen before, and you couldn’t help but to stare until another roar of thunder made her whimper and you snapped to your senses.
“U-um, are you okay?”
She shivered and shook her head. “I-I’m afraid of thunder,” she admitted, her cheeks colored red as she stared at the floor. For a moment, you thought she looked cute like this. “This is super embarrassing, I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay.” You didn’t really know what to do, so you sat down beside her. “Is there-?”
Another roll of thunder cut you off, and you watched as she curled back up into herself. A pang of sympathy went through your heart, even though you couldn’t help but find her a bit cute. Gone was the intimidating Chaeyoung you’d gotten so used to. Now, she seemed so much more approachable. Swallowing, you racked your mind for things to do, and your eyes landed on your laptop.
An idea struck you.
“Uh, we could try and watch a movie to distract you?”
She looked up, peeking out from under her hood. “R-really?”
“Yeah! We’ll turn the volume up so you can’t hear the thunder as loudly.”
She thought about it for a moment, then nodded, her cheeks flushed. “Sorry,” she murmured as you stood from your spot. “Now we aren’t going to get anything done for the project.”
“That can wait,” you assured her, and you found that you were telling the truth. You didn’t mind not working on the project. Your reassurance seemed to make her feel better and she stood up as well, following you over to the tiny little love seat your roommate had managed to fit in front of the TV. As she sat down beside you, another roll of thunder rumbled through the room and she grabbed onto your arm, holding you tight.
“Sorry,” she said again, pulling away once she realized what she’d done. Quickly, you shook your head.
“It’s okay, you can hold onto me if you want if it’ll make you feel safer.”
She blushed deeper but nodded, slowly moving closer to you and grabbing your arm again. “Thank you. I really appreciate it.”
“No problem. Now, what movie should we watch?”
The two of you ended up settling on a new cheesy romance movie from Netflix, and as you sat back into your seat, Chaeyoung leaned her head on your shoulder. Your heart skipped a beat and you glanced down at her for a moment, distracted from the opening scene.
She really did look cute like this. Had someone told you a month ago that you would be cuddling and watching a romantic movie with Chaeyoung, you would have laughed at them and scoffed at the idea. Now, you found that it wasn’t too bad. She smelled like rose perfume, and her skin was soft against yours. Her body vibrated as she let out a laugh at something on screen, and the sound made butterflies arrive in your stomach. Smiling a bit to yourself, you relaxed and let your body lean into hers as well.
As it turned out, cuddling with Chaeyoung was great. And you could totally get used to this.

Lily, Rose... Dandelion?
Tumblr media
-- ^ based on two prompts (one shown) our writing this time was supposed to be about something we feel is underappreciated or under romanticized. Below is my story for it --
Lily stared at the computer screen in front of her, debating picking it up and throwing it across the room. She had been initially excited to hear that their next research project would be on flowers. With a name like Lily Rose it was only natural that it had been a topic she had been passionate about for years... but it all had gone wrong.
Ms. Raynor had decided not to let the students pick their flower, but to have them pick a random one from a hat, and Lily, unfortunate Lily, was the fifth student to pick her flower. She had been disappointed to hear both lilies and roses be picked before it was her turn, but that barely compared to how she felt when she drew a little piece of paper, and read it aloud.
"Dandelions? You've got to be freaking kidding me! Is this a joke?"
"No," Ms. Raynor replied. "It's not a joke Lily. Dandelions are a flower too, and this will be a wonderful opportunity for you to learn more about them."
"It's just a weed!" Lily yelled, as Ms. Raynor gestured for the next student to take the hat and keep passing it around.
"Lily, a dandelion is a flower too. It may not be the one you wanted, but hopefully after your project you'll be able to appreciate them more."
That had been twenty minutes ago. After the hat had been passed around, and all the flowers assigned, the class went to the computer lab. Some students were excited to begin. Some, like Lily, had been disappointed with their flower (though none reacted as much as she). Some didn't care for the project in general. But all realized that two weeks was not a lot of time for a research project, and aside from a few who didn't care if they failed the project or not they had all begun to work.
Despite her immense frustration, Lily was not in the group who didn't care if they failed, so she got to work as well, and after a few minutes she stumbled upon a blog entry that seemed so absurd, she couldn't help but click on it. It was titled Aren't Dandelions Dandy?, and she thought it would be perfect to make fun of later with her friends.
Aren't Dandelions Dandy? Hello all you lovelies! You know what I've been thinking about a lot recently? Dandelions! Now, many people don't like dandelions, or think of them as just weeds. That's fine I supposed, we're all entitled to our own opinions. But I would disagree! I think they've amazing, wonderful little things, and I'm about to tell you some of my favorite reasons why!
"Yikes," Lily  said quietly. She had expected the blog to be cheesily enthusiastic, but this was even more than she was expecting. "Might as well keep going," Lily  thought, "I might find at least something to help with my project."
Dandelion is what we typically call any species of the genus Taraxacum. The common dandelion is Taraxacum offcinale. But we don't only call them dandelions! In some places they're referred to as blowballs, Irish daisies, puff-balls, or lion's-tooth. Lion's-tooth especially makes sense, since the word we usually use for them, dandelion, comes from the French "dent-de-lion", meaning lion's tooth! So, for one, dandelions have many fun names!
"Well, if nothing else I can use that for my  report." Lily thought as she continued to read.
Ready for a second reason dandelions are just amazing? They produce latex! Have you ever noticed if you cut or break the hollow stem of a dandelion a milky white fluid starts to come out? Yep, latex! Most produce a low quality or not very usable latex, but specific dandelions have been cultivated that produce latex the same quality as natural rubber from rubber trees! Though the trees are cheaper, and the preferred method, the dandelions grow faster (6 months vs. 7 years), so they work as an alternative when rubber trees are scarce or unavailable! Isn't that neat?
Lily sat for a moment, stunned. She had no idea that dandelions could be used for anything useful. Like most people she only thought of them as a weed. "Maybe they're not quite as lame as I thought..."
Almost to my favorite reason darlings! But before I get to that, a quick history lesson! Dandelions likely were originally from Eurasia, and were used as food and in traditional medicine in many places, including Ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt. As long as dandelions have been around Europe and Asia, they're relatively new to North America. Colonists brought them over on the Mayflower, for their medicinal benefits, and they've spread like crazy since then! You can read more about the history of dandelions in my other blog post, Taraxacum - A History.
And now to my favorite thing about dandelions! They are entirely edible! You heard me, the root, stem, leaves, flower, and puffy seeds are all edible! They're also quite nutritious, containing high amounts of vitamins A, C, and K, and moderate amounts of calcium, potassium, iron, and manganese. The leaves especially are eaten fairly often, usually in salads or blanched or sauteed (similar to spinach) to be eaten.
So  you see everyone? Dandelions are just grand! They can be eaten, used for latex, or dried and ground for a powdery yellow dye! They feed numerous spring pollinators, and are a source of wonder and amusement for children around the world. So to those of you who just see weeds, reconsider, and welcome these yellow beauties into your life!
Lily sat back in her chair, thinking. As much as she didn't want to admit it, the dorky blog made some interesting points. After a few moments she leaned forward again, and began typing...
When Lily got home that day she was greeted by her mom and dad, who had both taken off work that day to celebrate their anniversary. "How did school go sweetie?" her mom asked.
"We started a new research project today," Lily replied. "We each got assigned a flower, and mine is dandelions. I was really mad at first, because I got something so lame instead of one of the beautiful, nice flowers, like the ones you named me after." She paused as her parents glanced at each other, then continued.
"But this weird nerdy woman wrote a post about them that I read today, and I think I'm okay with doing my project on them. Can you call me when dinner is ready? I think I'm actually going to go keep working on my research in my room."
"Sure thing," her dad responded. "It's pasta tonight by the way."
"Sounds good!"
Once Lily had gone upstairs and her parents heard her door close they turned to each other. "We really should tell her that she's named after characters from a book and show hon."
Both thought back to just minutes ago when Lily referred to the author of the post as "this weird nerdy woman". "Let's at least wait until after dinner."
"Agreed."

You waited at the airport gate, a bouquet of yellow dandelions in arms, batted breath and suppressed anticipation. How long has it been? Three years? Or four? Well, you knew exactly how long... calculated carefully till the hours and minutes but denial is a hard thing. It was easy to say that you were there waiting for a long time friend, but hard to accept that Jeon Jung kook, your one and only best friend and a globally acknowledged IDOL now, might not feel the same as you anymore.
You met him in middle school. You were both freshmen and had almost similar classes. The boy used to sit alone in a corner desk with headphone on, humming to tunes unknown and scribbling or doodling in his notebook. If it was not for that student pair up of English essay writing, you probably wouldn’t have known him ever. But you were paired up with him, and after staying silent for most part of your one sided discussion of how to write the stuff, he had let you know that he ‘sucks’ at English. You had stared at him unblinkingly, which got him even redder and then with a smile you hoped conveyed assurance, you told him that you will help him out.
That’s how it started. From English essays to science projects, group studying before exams to late night stargazing, making sand castles in summer to sharing one blanket on a snow day, new songs on guitar and mixing colours on a palette, banana milk and hot chocolate...all of it got your worlds entangled with each other. He became your best friend, your best partner, the other half of your soul.
Then one day, he went to Seoul. He auditioned, he got selected and...He left your town. It’s not like you guys stopped talking. No, not at all. He has stayed in contact with you through all these years. In the beginning, before his debut he used to come home and you guys did hang out together. But you were slowly realising that his world is getting separated from yours. The ties are breaking, the knots are getting lose. He is slowly drifting away but you didn’t know how to hold on to him.
You stayed back in town, working to touch your dreams. He moved to the city, living his dreams. Busan never felt the same anymore to you. It never felt quite like home again. You didn’t know why.
You haven’t seen him in the last three years. You have talked on birthdays, new years, Christmas texts... a ‘hello’, a ‘how are you’ , one ‘miss you’ and one ‘lets meet up soon’ . That’s it, that’s all. You knew everything about his success because of media... you didn’t know if he didn’t have the time to know about yours or he just didn't bother anymore. Whenever he has been home in the mean time, he has always let you know...but you avoided it everytime. You could not muster the courage to stand in front of him and not being called by your nickname, not being completely enveloped in his warm hug or worst of all, not finding your ‘Kookie’ in IDOL Jung kook’s eyes anymore. You were scared, so you kept giving excuses and he never forced you either.
This time too, he mailed you, letting you know he will be in the town. You did not reply back though. You were not that brave yet. But you could not resist the urge to see him in person for once again. You are tired of seeing him through the screen and it’s just not enough anymore. You long for his hug, his smile, and everything else too but just seeing him has to do for now, you tell yourself. So you are waiting here. You don’t know why you brought the flowers though. You decided you will slip them over with all those other flowers his fans, waiting to see him, has brought.
The display board shows that the flight from Seoul to Busan has arrived. You could not take your eyes off of the arrival gate; you didn’t even know what you were expecting. Every second felt like a light-year of length and it was killing you.
And there he is, a backpack slung on one shoulder, bucket hat on top of that coconut head, and that same dazzling smile that has the whole world enchanted. You stared, without blinking, like that first day. Same awe, same affection, same butterflies in stomach... with tears prickling in the corners of your eyes. Before he could look at your direction, you turned your back towards him, and...ran. You had to cry, but you can’t cry there, you can’t let him catch you crying there and not acknowledge you or worse looking at you sympathetically. You have to leave.
As soon as you reached your car, you broke down. You have no explanation why you were crying but the overwhelming emotions choking at your throat made you double over in a nonexistent pain and cry harder. You dropped the flowers on the ground, leaned onto your car and just let the tears flow.
You don’t know how long you stood there. You felt numb and had no feelings of your surroundings until a pair of strong arms hugged you from behind and held you tight. You were frozen for a moment, not knowing how to react. You were probably supposed to scream or try to get yourself loose but in front of you, you could see that bouquet of dandelions gripped tightly in a hand belonging to one of those arms encircling you, and the other wrist, has a bracelet, that you will recognise anywhere, anytime, in any reality. A face was buried into the collars of your thick coat and you know that sound of breathing with your whole being.
You slowly turned around in those arms and looked up. Your eyes met two pools of brown brimming with tears, a familiar coconut head and a too well known half grin- a grin the world doesn’t get to see, a grin reserved only for you. You sighed, brought your arms around the back of the much taller, stronger and warm body in front of you and clung to it, burying your face in the hard chest.
You sighed again, and smiled.
You are home.
Author's note: This is my first ever BTS fanfiction, which I wrote on the request of the friend of mine who introduced me to them. On this eve of their anniversary, I could not resist posting it. Hope, it's not too disappointing.
P.s. English is not my first language so forgive me for the grammatical and other errors. Thank you.

Random Update Time! 2019/09/12
Hello everyone!
I’m finally on summer break FOR REAL. 100% free time, no classes, no school event preparation, no lines to memorize, and only one part time job. At least for the next week!
So it’s time to do some catching up! Here are just a few highlights from the last (very busy) semester and “summer break” up until now.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
But first! If you want to sign up for my blog update notification mailing list (get e-mail announcements when I post an update, so you don’t have to check my blog manually!) check out the info in my previous blog post!
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
Back in March Mabs and I went to MachiAsobi in Tokushima for Golden Week! It was great to see some of our Shikoku friends again and we had a fun weekend! I also debuted my new Bontenmaru cosplay and Mabs and I finally got to cosplay Benmaru and Bontenmaru together! (the photo on the right)
I have a lot of photos from MachiAsobi, as well as progress photos when I was making my Bontenmaru cosplay (I painted like 10 dragons and constructed a giant leek), so I’d like to give MachiAsobi 2019 its own blog post sometime in the near future (hopefully).

This semester was BUSY. One of my school projects was to make a website as a request from an actual company, and working on that project even included going to the store to interview employees and photograph things for the website, as well as writing all of the content for the site myself (in Japanese). That, along with working on an intense group project, and some sites I was making outside of school, kept me really busy!
There were a lot of weekends when Mabs and I were too busy to hang out very much, but here’s a particularly colorful photo from one of the Sundays when we did hang out.

Okay, but speaking of video games I AM SO EXCITED FOR THE REMAKE OF FINAL FANTASY VII!!!!
This game means so much to me and this trailer video makes me tear up every time I watch it. I can’t wait to see all of these characters and the world of FF7 in high definition! And I love Tifa’s new redesign! (the pleated skirt!) A future cosplay plan? I think so.
youtube
I don’t have much time to play games these days but FF7R will be coming out in March right during spring break... I also don’t have a PS4 and was wondering where I was going to get the money for one before March, but since I unexpectedly got cast in that drama, I’m thinking I might put part of my acting salary aside for a PS4...

Some pretty hydrangeas from back when it was the rainy season! I didn’t know that multiple colors of hydrangeas could grow on one plant.

Mabs and I haven’t had much time or energy for cosplay this semester (I really miss it!) but back in June we put together some pretty cool casual Basara outfits and did a photoshoot at an event at a big park here in Osaka.

This summer was a good time to be a Basara fan in Osaka; the new Sengoku Basara Battle Party smartphone game got released, and to celebrate they opened a Sengoku Basara cafe here in Osaka for a limited time!
They had lots of fun food and drinks (all non-alcoholic, yayyy) based on the Basara characters. Mabs and I went to the cafe three times, and once to a connected karaoke place that had a different set of Basara food and drinks.

We had a lot of fun and it was nice to meet up with Mabs after school and go to the cafe since we were often so busy on the weekends. These days we’re usually too busy/broke to really enjoy many of the events and things that come with living in a big city, so it was nice to take advantage of that for once too!

These ice cream parfaits (mint chocolate, and chocolate & vanilla) are some of my new favorite konbini ice creams.

Mabs and I had a nice anniversary date this year too!
Tumblr media
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
In July Mabs’ sister came to Japan to visit for about three weeks! Part of that time the two of them went to Korea and I was busy with filming, but we also had some fun days of hanging out! I really enjoyed getting to know Mabs’ sister better, and we had some fun adventures, like going to see the deer and the giant Buddha statue in Nara!
Tumblr media
It was our first time to Nara, and I hadn’t expected to see SO MANY deer! They’re everywhere! I’ve been to Miyajima in Hiroshima, which also has deer (and where I had a sort of scary experience with a deer), but the Nara deer are much less likely to try to eat your personal belongings, and are just generally much calmer. (Unless they see that you’re holding the special “shika senbei”, or “deer crackers”, that shops sell to feed to them) They are super cute, and some will bow to you to ask for food, and some will let you pet them.
Tumblr media
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
Back to the topic of filming that drama, I had so much fun! It was definitely a tough schedule (waking up at 4am and shooting until 10pm some days) but I got to see a lot of areas of Osaka that I hadn’t been to before, acting was a fun experience, and the cast and crew were all so nice and I enjoyed hanging out with them! I've been told that it’s okay to post photos, but I’m going to hold off for now. But you’ll probably hear more about it in the future if I can share more with you. (Also that will have my real name attached to it, but I’ve never used my real name on this blog, so I’m trying to figure out how I want to navigate that.)
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
My classmates and I participated in Yahoo’s “HACK U” hackathon (seriously who picked that name tho) again this year. HACK U is two weeks long, and I was busy with filming for the first week, and we had group projects and school during the second week, so we weren’t able to devote as much time to it as we did last year, but we still came up with a pretty cool project! (augmented reality t-shirts)
Here’s the livestream of the event; skip to about 1:07:00 in the video to see our presentation. I made the video explanation for how the t-shirts work. (And there’s another clip of us explaining our project at 2:47:00 in the video)
youtube
It was fun working together with my classmates on this! And honestly the free pizza is one of the best parts of HACK U, lol.
Tumblr media
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
After HACK U, there was one more week of group projects at school (the school group projects were collaborations with the upperclassmen and underclassmen, and had nothing to do with HACK U), and at the end of that week was my school’s exhibition of student works where companies come to look at the sites we made and potentially offer us internships or eventually jobs.
I worked hard to throw together a portfolio site before the exhibition, and I’m glad I did; it got great reviews from the people who looked at it! I showed my portfolio, the website I made for the company, and the LGBT-flag-themed cookie project that Mabs and I made for Pride Month. I got offered an opportunity to tour a company, and then do an internship if I decide that I’m interested (which I am, regardless of whether I think it fits me, internships are a great opportunity to get a better sense of what sort of companies are out there, and what sorts of companies I would or wouldn’t like to work at), so it was another successful exhibition!
Tumblr media
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
Until school starts up again week after next, it’s time to edit some of the cosplay photos that have been piling up on my hard drive, study for the highest level of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (which Mabs and I will be taking in December), draft some more blog posts, spend time with Mabs, watch more of the new Fruits Basket anime (I just started watching it this week and I didn’t expect to enjoy it this much!), and just RELAX.
Hope you all are having a good week! (And don’t forget to sign up for the mailing list if you’re interested!)

I've been browsing your blog for Sokkla research as I feel like it has similarities to what I'm trying to write with Azula and Soren. I haven't begun tackling Gladiator yet, as it looks a little daunting, but I feel I should since I keep hearing so much. I am a little hesitant over accidentally using anything you wrote for my own story. I'd be proud if I could make it as long and epic as yours. It's very personal to me. What motivated you to write Gladiator and keep writing for so long?
Yeah, I saw your post about your crossover ship having potential similarities with Sokkla and I agree that it would, since Soren shares a few traits with Sokka, character-wise. Admittedly, Azula interacting with a character like Soren would present quite a lot of fun possibilities, so it seems to be an idea worth exploring :)
As for reading Gladiator and accidentally using similar tropes… well, I don’t know if it will ease your mind much, but there are several tropes that I’ve run into in many Sokkla fics, mine, other people’s, just… lots of them xD and it’s not really a problem. Storytelling can lead to similar places, but usually, every writer handles their tropes and character development differently.
My plan for a certain, poignant scene in Gladiator’s 96th chapter was set in stone in my head back when I started plotting the fic (like I said in that ask I answered yesterday). The scene in question is one I depicted in some artworks for Gladiator’s second anniversary: Sokka defeats Azula in combat for the first time, pins her down, aims his sword at her, and they just stare at each other before things take a pretty heated twist...
A few months after planning this, I read another fic where practically the same thing happened between them (it’s a Spanish fic, I hadn’t tried reading it yet because it was incomplete, sometimes I still scold the writer in question for never finishing it), only, rather than it happening when they could no longer resist the attraction between them, it happened when they were barely getting to know each other: Azula followed Sokka into a forest clearing, where he was training on his own. Upon noticing someone was hiding in the bushes, he leaps at her and pins her down, aiming his sword at her as well. Of course, he freaks out upon realizing it’s her, she isn’t very happy, and no heated things happen other than a lot of blushing, especially on her part xD
So, as you can see, even if the trope is “Sokka holds Azula down, at swordpoint”, the context was entirely different, the outcome was completely different and heck, the wording and even language we used was 100% different.  I came up with the idea for Gladiator before reading Majesty, later on I found out that someone had written a very similar scene already (and it was a close associate of mine, no less xD). As much as I didn’t feel like I was all that original anymore… I didn’t change my plans because of that. As long as I didn’t pull a Cassandra Clare and copy-pasted the whole scene my friend wrote into Gladiator, where was the harm in trying my own hand at it? I wrote the tropey situation in my own way, with my own words, and it’s completely my own thing.
There was something else that happened with Gladiator, another friend read it and thought I was taking inspiration for my portrayal of Sokka and Azula from a couple in a TV show she loved. Turns out I’d heard about the show, but I hadn’t watched it until she nudged me enough to do it (no regrets!), and after watching it I understood where the similarities were, but the context was all different. More than that, a certain situation (Sokka admitting his love for Azula for the first time, she asks him to say it again) was close enough to what happened between the main couple in said TV show…
… But I actually had been inspired by another couple, in ANOTHER TV show, that had a slightly similar exchange too xD
Therefore, tropes are tropes. I’ve recycled so many tropes in so many things I’ve written that people could probably psychoanalyze me and figure out all my brain chemistry damn easily if they did. I tend to have a very particular structure when writing, too (the original story I wrote and finished had 3 parts, Gladiator has 3 parts too, to name the most superficial similarity only), and I’ve frequently explored similar topics in them. It’s hardly a crime to do it again, but as long as you do it in a unique way, there’d be no harm in testing how some tropes would turn out with Soren and Azula. It could be worrisome if you portrayed Soren reacting to events exactly the same way Sokka does, but that’s not very likely to happen. As similar as they can be, they’re also different in several ways and in the post where you compared them you seemed to see those differences pretty clearly.
Therefore, I don’t think there’s any real harm in trying your hand at certain tropes and situations. If the context is different, if there’s logic to what you’re writing, and of course, as long as you write it yourself, there’s absolutely no need to worry about repeating things other people have done before.
That being said, don’t feel pressured to read Gladiator at all. I’m glad people have recommended it, but I understand if it feels not only daunting but that maybe you won’t be sure what to write if you see all the stuff I’ve done so far. Gladiator is many things, and one of them is my playground for testing Sokka and Azula’s relationship in just about every way I can xD it’s so long that I’ve been free to play with all sorts of possibilities with them, to fulfill all my shippiest wishes for these two. Therefore, if you’d rather be true to your own ideas and not get too influenced by it, it’s absolutely understandable not to read it until you feel comfortable about giving it a shot (presumably, once you’ve plotted plenty of own story and feel like you won’t be at risk of taking too much inspiration from it).
As for what motivates me… well, I guess there were many factors. One of them is that Gladiator was an idea worth digging into, with so much to explore that I was completely overwhelmed by the possibilities and I got completely caught up in it. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted the story to exist, so I decided I needed to make it happen. As it’s practically a full re-write of ATLA’s storyline, I had a chance to just… handle everything on my terms. And that meant the developments I didn’t like from the show could change: I could improve on things I thought needed improvements, I could add things that I felt the show needed, and so on and so forth. There were nearly no limits, really, and as I was absolutely lost in the beauty and glory of my OTP, I couldn’t help myself and I decided to dive right in.
It helps a lot that Gladiator’s kind of a multi-faceted thing: as I’ve been developing my art too, whenever I was bored in class I’d sketch things related to it and then, if I had a chance and the sketch was good enough, I’d finish the art digitally later. I have a lot of music that inspires me, so sometimes I just sit down, listen to it, and I let myself evoke scenes that I want to write or draw. Fact is, the whole fifth anniversary project was a mix of art and music: the songs that inspired many arcs of Part 1, along with images that referenced them.
Lastly, though… I generally know where Gladiator’s going, so I don’t usually reach a point where I’m like “Woah I have zero plans for what to do next”. I plot things for the story whenever I have nothing to do (when I’m traveling places, when I’m showering, when I’m waiting for something? Just, whenever, wherever). If an arc isn’t shaping up to be particularly fun, I try to figure out what to do to make it more interesting and appealing for me to write. Whenever I come up with something I’m hyped about writing, it helps me keep on writing until I get there. Sometimes that’s also a curse because I go overboard and write like… 12K in a single day because I am that hyped about whatever I’m doing :’D happened a couple of weeks ago xD
Anyways, always try to fulfill your own needs with your story, first and foremost. Sometimes your public won’t be 100% receptive to your ideas, but sometimes they’ll actually want exactly what you’re putting out there for them. The magic of fanfiction is that, if someone doesn’t like what they’re getting, there’s absolutely nothing to stop them from taking to writing a story they do want, right? So, why should we try to please other people instead of writing what we’d want to read?
Make your story something you can revisit and smile about, make your story something you can find value in, regardless of whoever tries to undermine it. Make it yours, make it everything you want it to be. Want humor? Set up humorous situations (I mean, your lead couple would be Azula and Soren, humor’s basically guaranteed xD). Want tragedy and angst? You can have it too. You really can do anything, as long as you make up your mind to get it done. Figure out what it really is you want to write, the key scenes, the development you’re looking for with your main characters, come up with plans on how to get them where you need them to be, and once you feel you’re in solid grounds for it, feel free to start writing and always keep on looking forward to the big things you’ve wanted to write for your fic.

it was always me and you ch. 3
Summary:
"There had always been something about Fitz’s fiancée that she had never really admired, something off about the way she smiled with too much teeth and how she rarely blinked."
When Fitz’s fiancée runs off in the middle of the night leaving Fitz and their 4 year old daughter behind, Jemma is there immediately because she’s his best-friend and she’s been there through it all.
But as Fitz navigates single parenthood with Jemma every step on the way, maybe it’s something different than being a best-friend. Maybe it’s something more.
{Entire work}
{Read on Ao3}
In the coming weeks, Jemma finds herself almost seamlessly transitioning to a new way of life that doesn’t feel like a new way of life at all.
She goes to work, devoting her everything in the hours that she’s there in order to keep afloat of everything new coming in. After work she’ll usually go to Fitz’s house, spend time with Orla, help with anything she can help with in order to make the absence of a wife and mother seem less glaring. Sometimes, after Orla’s gone to bed, her and Fitz will stay up so late, like they’ve forgotten that they aren’t nineteen again, that she’ll fall asleep on the sofa and will wake up at five-thirty in a mad panic, rushing back to her flat for a shower and a change of clothes before the cycle starts over again.
The thing is, she doesn’t even realise she’s fallen into a cycle, it comes that naturally to her. And she’s enjoying it all (perhaps not the mad rush through the city at five thirty in the morning – it’s the utter opposite of preparation). She enjoys going to work and having to sift through in-tray – finding it exciting to know what new things she’ll get to work on, checking the results of her ongoing projects like they’re a prize and being ridiculously happy when it’s all worked out. There’s something so relaxing about going to Fitz’s house after, getting to help Orla with her homework or let her niece ‘teach’ her about how addition works, or the new words she’s learning in school. And she enjoys telling Fitz about her days when they’re sitting together on the sofa watching mind-numbing late-night television because it reminds her of a time when they were both young and they shared a flat and there wasn’t all of this heartbreak and they could just be ‘them’.
Of course, it means some things in her life have suffered, things that she doesn’t even realise she has neglected. She hasn’t stayed in her flat properly for a while, and only notices when the pile of post collecting on her hallway table is in danger of collapse, and there’s a thin layer of dust on her kitchen worktops. She spends a rare day off cleaning it, vowing to spend more time in her own house, reorganise her own life, that the last few weeks have just been a phase she needed to help her best-friend and his daughter pass through.
Except that vow lasts as long as she unknowingly stays in the lab working until well past midnight and, too tired to drive all the way across the city to go home, on autopilot she texts Fitz to ask if she can stay at his because he lives only five minutes away and there’s a toothbrush that literally has her name on it.
They used to live together five years ago and it doesn’t seem like it was half a decade ago when she’s laughing with him over dinner or they’re arguing about what movie to watch. They used to do this all the time, still regularly did it on and off throughout the past five years, and even though maybe she should be there for him in a different way, even though maybe she should be a little more distant when offering her support, it doesn’t feel wrong and so much of her enjoys having her best friend back that she purposefully forgets to think about the implications of it all.
She sits at Fitz’s kitchen table, a cup of tea in front of her, Fitz making dinner at the cooker, an image that has become so very representative of her life in these past few weeks. They’re bickering over the scientific accuracy in the Jurassic Park franchise when something catches Jemma’s eye. An envelope in the middle of the coffee table – a brown padded one bearing Fitz’s name and address in a handwriting that’s unfamiliar, the blue second-class stamp glaring from the top right-hand corner.
“What’s this?” She murmurs to herself, reaching out to bring it closer, the overwhelming curiosity not even allowing room to think that this isn’t actually her post.
She slides it across the table not harshly, but the action is enough to make the item inside dislodge and a ring falls onto the table with a clink.
Jemma picks it up between her thumb and forefinger. It should be familiar to her, something in her brain tells her, but for the life of her she can’t place it and no logical conclusion comes to her in that moment.
“Fitz? What’s this?”
He turns around, eyes widening in surprise then dropping in resignation. There isn’t even anything indicating indignation at his post being opened by someone else.
“Eh…” he scratches the back of his neck, looks down at the floor where Jemma’s imagining he’s scuffing his shoes against the tile. “That’s her ring… Annie’s ring.” He looks back up at her, sees how she’s still confused. “Her engagement ring.”
Jemma feels her skin begin to get rather hot, her eyebrows raise all on their own. The disbelief is overwhelming, and the utter audacity of this woman is quite frankly disgusting for Jemma. To send an engagement ring back in the post, a ring that’s meant to symbolise love and commitment and being there, with no note to be seen and weeks later, is abhorrent. Of course there’s no proper etiquette on how to return an engagement ring, Jemma realises this quite well, but some ways are more proper than others and if you’re going to do something like this, then at least do it right.
She bites back a remark about Well at least she’s definitely not coming back now (partly because it’s not helpful at all, and partly because she doesn’t want to be seen to be that woman) and instead says something else that’s been bothering her ever since she picked the ring up.
“It doesn’t look like your grandmother’s engagement ring.”
For that was the ring she thought Fitz was going to use. He’d shown it to her, the day he’d told her he was going to propose to the mother of his child and Jemma remembers the simple gold band and pear-drop diamond quite fondly. She remembers how his face had lit up when he’d told her it used to belong to his grandmother, who had given it to his mother to give to him.
“She was married to my grandad for sixty-seven years,” he’d told her, wide-eyed with hope. “Said it was good luck.”
“Well then,” Jemma had replied, voice light, trying to make herself mean it, “it’s good that Annie’s getting such a wonderful ring, isn’t it?”
Fitz shakes his head (maybe remembering that conversation, too). “That’s ‘cause it’s not.” He hesitates, as if deciding whether or not to say something before just going for it. “She didn’t like it. Wanted something new and her own. Thought that was fair, you know?”
It would be fair and reasonable but knowing how much family means to Fitz, how much courage it would have taken him to share this with her, brings another pool of resentment into Jemma’s heart. She doesn’t say anything about Annie, keeps her thoughts to herself.
“I’ll bet your mum was disappointed then,” she tries to joke, but it sounds flat. Unable to look at him, she keeps her eyes on the ring.
She hears Fitz chuckle. “She never thought I’d actually give Annie any ring, to be honest. Never mind hers. She uh- when I told her, she said she thought the ring was for…” he trails off, and Jemma looks up. There’s a millisecond where she finds him giving her an odd sort of look before he drops his gaze. “She didn’t think the ring was for her anyway, so I don’t expect she was that heartbroken.”
“That’s not so bad then,” she says lightly, setting the ring down a little more carelessly than she intended to. It makes a harsh clunk on the table and the sound bounces around her head for the rest of the evening.
-x-
Jemma’s having dinner with Jack when she receives a phone call from Fitz. It’s not an important phone call, nothing like the earth-shattering one he made only weeks ago. He asks if she’s able to take Orla for a few nights next week. He’s having to go away for work, tried to get out of it but couldn’t. Apologises over and over. She says ‘of course’ and ‘it’s really no problem’ and hangs up.
Jack looks at her suspiciously as she goes back to eating her pasta with no further comment. “What was that?” He asks.
His tone makes Jemma sit up, take notice. Surely he can’t be annoyed about her using her phone at the dinner table? Yes, it’s rude but it doesn’t warrant such a tone, surely? It’s not an important dinner, not an anniversary or a memorable event. Just the two of them eating dinner as they have done before.
“Fitz has to go away for a few nights next week,” she says slowly, waiting for a reaction. “He asked me if I would have Orla to stay, which I told him of course I would.”
Jack takes a sip of his wine, She watches as he decides what to say. His next words sound airy but she can read between the lines. “Can his mum not take her?”
“I don’t know. I never asked.”
“Huh. That’s going to cause some issues for you at the lab, won’t it?”
In another tone, Jemma might concede this to be a fair point. Lately she has been working non-stop days that start at eight and finish around midnight and she doesn’t even realise that the rest of the university has been shut up until she takes a rare glance out the window and notices the complete darkness where there should be light. Leaving anytime before the middle of the night is frowned upon and yes, the rational mind in her can agree that it’s not the most ideal time for Jemma to have a child in her charge.
But it’s not just any child, now. It’s Orla Fitz. Her pseudo-niece. Who she wouldn’t even have to look after in the first place if her mother hadn’t done a runner. So for a few days she can endure the not-so-subtle looks from her lab manager and the over-the-top sighs from the project leader as she stars at nine and leaves at quarter to three. Besides, she’s naturally ahead in her assigned work anyway, and she hasn’t taken holidays over a year, so there’s really no reason it should matter.
She explains all of this to her boyfriend, who just nods his head like he doesn’t agree and goes back to eating his pasta. She waits for him to eventually speak his piece, which he does in around thirty seconds.
“Do you not think that maybe Fitz needs to learn to do this by himself?”
The words make her pause, look at someone she’s meant to love as if he’s a stranger. “What?”
“I just think that he’s relying on you a little too much. Maybe he needs to learn how to do this whole parenting thing without you there?”
“But why?”
Because, truly, she doesn’t see why he must. Parenting should never be a solo task, it should always be a two parent endeavour. It’s unfair for him to be alone, especially when it wasn’t his choice to be.
“Because, Jemma.” Jack’s fork clatters to the plate as he spreads his hands in emphasis. “Because you might not always be here for him. You have such great things going for you at work – I’ve seen the job offers lying on the table. Places from all over the world want you. You could go so far. But I know you. I know you’ll hold yourself back, hold yourself here for him and that’s not fair to either of you.”
Jemma feels like she can’t breathe, betrayal making her chest tight. “So you’re telling me that, what? I should just leave him to do it alone?” She shakes her head. “No. That’s not fair.”
Jack exhales deeply. “No, I’m not saying that.” He reaches his hands for hers but Jemma pulls them back, out of his reach. He hangs his head briefly before continuing. “All I’m saying it, maybe he shouldn’t be so dependant on you, maybe he should be able to experience things alone every so often.”
She stands up from the table, pushing her chair back so hard that it wobbles precariously for a few seconds. Embarrassed to find tears in her eyes, she ignores all of the dinner etiquette her parents have ever taught her and walks over to the sink, grabbing a tissue and trying to discreetly wipe her eyes. Once she feels a bit calmer, she moves over to the door because it’s impossible to carry on with dinner, now. She looks back to Jack, who looks t her imploringly, begging her to understand.
She can’t.
“We’ve always been there for each other,” she tells him, voice quiet but strong. “I don’t intend to change that.”
Because they’ve been by each other’s side for the whole damn time, and there is no way in hell that she begins to back away now.
-x-
Orla comes to stay the next again week, toting her blue spotty suitcase and her grin that lights up the world.
Jemma resolves to make it fun for her, to make her forget why she’s having to stay in the fun place. On the first night, for dinner, breaking all of her self-imposed rules, they order in a pizza and have ice-cream for dessert. For breakfast, Jemma puts banana in the shape of a smiley face on Orla’s cereal and packs her lunch with different colours of the electromagnetic spectrum. After she picks her up from school they go to the park, play on the swings and the slides for a ridiculously long time and after dinner and homework is done, Jemma shows her basic kitchen science experiments like magic milk and the vinegar volcano.
It’s a little bit exhausting, because she’s never had to care for a child before and although Jemma’s tried, it’s not exactly something one can prepare for. But she loves it, that’s what she finds strange. Despite her lack of experience, lack of preparation, lack of the ability to relate to children that she’s struggled with all of her life, she enjoys taking care – but more importantly spending time – with this little human who isn’t hers.
On the last night, after the swings and experiments and all the homework is done, Jemma tucks Orla into her guest bed that’s far too big for such a small child. She tells her stories of brilliant female scientists, ones who had to fight to get even the chance to be heard, in absence of the more traditional bedtime stories that she’s never had much admiration for anyway.
“Wow.” Orla blinks up at her, owl-eyed in her pyjamas in a too-big bed. “That’s amazing.”
“Isn’t it just,” Jemma agrees, tucking the duvet further around the four-year-old. “Now, it’s quite late considering you have school tomorrow.”
“Awwww. Can I not just stay up with you a little bit later? Please?”
“It’s already past your bedtime,” Jemma says, although she would quite like to stay up with her niece and watch cartoons huddled together on the sofa. But it is a school night, after all.
“I like spending time with you, though,” Orla huffs.
“I like spending time with you, too,” Jemma replies, kissing her on the nose making Orla giggle.
“Daddy likes spending time with you. He smiles more when you’re there.”
It shouldn’t mean so much, the word of a four year old who thinks fairies are responsible for lighting up the streetlights at night. Yet Jemma’s heartbeat begins to take on an irregular rhythm of its own accord.
“Does he now?” She asks lightly, watching as Orla’s brow furrows and she puts on her comical ‘thinking face’.
“Yeah, he does,” she decides, very firm in her opinion.
“I like spending time with your daddy, too,” she tells her, but the voice is remarkably different to the one she used before. She doesn’t even thin she recognises it.
Orla looks mildly offended. “But not more than me?” She asks suspiciously.
“Oh, no,” Jemma laughs, heartbeat restored. She kisses her on the forehead once more. “Never more than you.”
-x-
The next time Jemma ends up spending the night at the Fitz household is only a few weeks later.
She’s been at the lab later and later, for there is no reason to really go home. Her and Jack still aren’t quite right, and going home only reminds her of the fact. Besides, her home doesn’t really feel like a home anymore. Not now, when she knows the vibrancy of family.
It’s late, well into the wee hours of the morning. Soon it will be time to get up for work. She really should get to sleep. There’s a film playing on the television, it’s light the only light, casting those ghostly shadows around the room.
They’re sitting together on the sofa, curled into each corner with their legs intermingled in the middle. Fitz is asleep, snoring softly. She should go to bed, to the guest room, to sleep, but somehow she finds that she can’t.
He smiles more when you’re there.
Orla’s words from years ago ring in her ears. It’s something she can’t shake ever since. She keeps stealing glances at Fitz, wondering if maybe he doesn’t always look the way he does to her. Jemma looks at him now – the way he’s asleep on the couch. Mouth relaxed, no lines around his eyes. He looks at peace. And, selfishly, for she knows she shouldn’t, she wonders if he doesn’t sleep peacefully when she’s not around.
There had been a time, many years ago, before he’d met Annie that she’d wondered… She lets out a small laugh, snuggles deeper into the sofa, feeling her eyes begin to droop. It’s too comfortable here to move anywhere else. Jemma lets herself be lulled to sleep by Fitz’s soft snores, wondering about whatever happened to what was seemingly the inevitable.

Safety Embers; Benverly College Au
@forstenbrough @trashmoutheds
"My heart burns there too."
Beverly traces her finger tips over the messy, light writing on the back of an old ass postcard. It was a little worn and tattered from all the years of hauling it around to interviews and tests, practically everywhere she went.
It made her feel safe.
The red haired beauty just started her freshmen year of college and honestly she needs all the help she could get. Her journalism classes were a living Hell, and her psychologies made her want to vomit. All they were doing was writing papers about the American Revolution and Beverly wanted to die.
Her legs dangled on the counter in the kitchen, in the same apartment her, Richie and Mike split. They all made the agreement to live together after all of them ended up on the same campus that year. Bill, Ben, Stan and Eddie were in the same city just studying elsewhere so it only made sense.
Smoke peered out of her lips and she groans, throwing her pencil across the room. Her phone went off, symbolizing another class project was posted online.
"My students! My apologies for the late posting, but I didn't give you an assignment today so it only seems fair!"
Eye roll.
"Your project is more creative. You are going to write or create something for a loved one. No format. Whatever you feel in your heart. It needs to express some type of emotion and make me feel something. This is worth fifty percent of your grade, and you have a week. BEGIN!"
She bangs her fist against the silver stove, "JESUS FUCK!"
Who was she even supposed to write to? She could write to Richie, who had been her best friend for a long time and kept her on her toes. But that felt wrong.
Bill, her technical ex boyfriend. They dated in high school for a month, a fake relationship to get Stan jealous and crawl into Bill's arms. Beverly was happy to help, and he always was her rock of sorts. But that felt wrong.
Mike, her BROTHER in her heart who taught her the beauties of the world and showed her the starts (literally taught her the constellations) and always welcomed her with open arms and a smile, she could write for him. Again.. weird.
Maybe Eddie, the only "mother" she's ever had, which is very ironic on multiple levels. He's always checking up on her, taking care of her when she's sick, being her only sort of "girl" friend. They fought once because he thought her and Richie were dating sopmore year and ever since they'd been close. She couldn't write for him.
Stan, who was so incredibly smart and kept her organised, probably the only reason she graduated. He also hated her once while her and Bill "dated", and now she tell him everything and in return he tells her everything. No. WRONG.
That left Ben. The guy that saved her from the CLOWN. The guy that was always peering at her down the hall and in all buying her the coffee beans she likes, that you have to order from Miami and cost like fifty bucks a pound. The guy that makes her smile so bright that it makes her mouth hurt. The guy that applied to college in Washington because she, Richie, Mike and what ended up to be all of the Losers did.
The guy that makes her feel the most safe. She couldn't write to him- but why?
"Because he'd laugh at my writing-" Beverly says as the front door opens.
Mike strode into the room carrying a few grocery bags and textbooks, a look of curiosity on his face.
"Who would laugh?"
She feels her teeth hug her lips roughly. Mike wouldn't tell Ben, she knew that. But at the same time... wouldn't he?
"Nobody," the red head snaps. "M' talking about this guy in my psych class, he would laugh at my final report."
The dark skinned boy smiles, dimples forming in cheeks and suddenly he starts laughing.
"What's so funny-"
"You! I'm not dumb, Richie told me about that assignment, he texted me he was going to pour his heart out to Eddie since their anniversary is in a month."
Beverly frowns, "What does that have to do with me?"
He smiles, "I know you, Bev. And I know about you and your feelings. I heard you on the phone with Eddie last night."
"Oh so you're stalking my conversations now?"
"Worry about that later! He's been waiting for you for years so what the hell is your problem?"
Mike was probably right. What was her problem? There was nothing wrong with this... right?
"Have you read any of his poetry! It's beautiful! It is so heartwarming that I CRY thinking about the fact that I can't listen to his thoughts and see all of his muses! His hands are soft and he always lets me borrow his sweatshirts even when he's only wearing a tank top under them because he is too FUCKING sweet! He smells like cherries and lemons and his hands are so soft. Almost softer than his words. How can I write him how I feel when I don't even know?"
She released a sob she'd been holding for months, Mike immediately wrapping his arms around her and rubbing her back.
"Hey hey shhh... it's gonna be okay, Ben loves you."
Beverly sighs, "I'm not enough for him, Mike. I'm a mess."
They sit there what feels like hours, even though she knows it's only been like five minutes. Mike slows her breath and she begins to calm down.
"It's a creative assignment."
"Hmm?"
The boy releases her, smiling wide and proud, "it's a creative assignment! You don't even have to write anything! Fuck, if you wanted to you could use magazine cut outs to describe your thoughts-"
They slowly make eye contact, the red head coming to the realization of what the other said. He was right it was a CREATIVE assignment, no ten page papers on dumb shit from the eighteen forties. It was all her. And if she didn't have to write her words the better.
"Do we still have that collection of magazines in the laundry room?"
***
It took all night, but she finally realized what she wanted and made it happen. Her and Mike dug through several magazines, from sex advice to food to teenage girl dressing issues. She needed all of it.
Beverly decided on a poem, because that was how he communicated his feelings with her over the years and now that she knew hers she could return the favor. There were pictures too, though, like pictures of coffee cups and baseball bats and books. All the things they liked together.
She glued the last word on the large, thick poster paper they found under Richie's bed (along some other questionable things she was going to ask Eddie about later) and sighed. This was it.
"He has to see it." She says, smiling and her hands shaking in anxiety.
Mike nods, "I'll take you to their place tomorrow, I have to go to drop off Stan's notes from math-"
"No. NOW."
He sighs, "Bev, it is three in the morning."
Her red curls bounce as she jumps out of her seat, "does it look like I give a shit? C'mon now or never!"
So they get in Mike's car and he drives as fast as he can and the whole time she is either screaming in her head or out of the window. She's finally doing it.
They pull up in the driveway of the duplex the boys live in, and while Mike begins to get out she is glued to the seat.
He notices and walks over to her side, opening her door. She still refuses to get out.
"You've got this-"
"What if he's over me? Or if he is done with me taking so long? Any girl would be lucky to have him ya know."
Mike nods, "and the only one he sees is you."
She smiles and takes his hand up, running to the front door and slamming on it with her palm. After a few bangs, she saw the living room light come on and the door open.
It was Ben, in a sweatshirt and pants, an open copy of How To Kill A Mockingbird in his left hand while the right help open the door. He had grown taller, and he started playing a few sports and building plenty in high school so a majority of his chubby went away but he was still stocky. He was wearing his glasses.
"Hello I-" his speach faltered before smiling. "Hey Bev... Mike, what's up?"
Beverly began breathing heavily, chest heaving and curls shaking in the wind. Words began to form but wouldn't come out of her throat.
Mike coughs, "Can we come in? We have a surprise for you."
Ben leaded them in, to where Mike proceeded to the restroom, not before winking at Beverly and gave her a thumbs up.
The boy in the room smiled again, "are you okay? Richie is in Eddie's room, if that's-"
"I came to see you, you goof." A blush arose on her cheeks.
She began to unroll the poster in her hand that had went unnoticed until that moment. It was crumpled from her squeezing it.
"W-what's that?"
Beverly smiles, "I made this for you. It's a... token of my affection." She winks for good measure.
Taking the paper from her hands, he looks over it. No look on his face.
The poem reads;
My heart is at home, safe
Safe in your words
In your arms
In your miles and miles of comfort
In your sweatshirts
And in you.
You keep me safe
Something I never knew could happen
It's a feeling I'm not used to
But yet, here I am addicted like a heroin addict
This was cheesy yes I know
But cheese is hot, and so is your safety
And my heart burns there too.
Ben stared at the paper, mouthing the words and refusing to look at the red head.
"It's stupid isn't it?" Beverly sighs, grabbing a cigarette from her pocket.
"I'm sorry, Ben, it's not-"
A tear rolled from under his frames that covered his eyes.
He stayed silent for a moment, thinking.
"Oh fuck it," he mutters before striding over to her, pulling the cigarette from her mouth and kissing her.
The kiss was soft, slow, and sweet. He tasted like coffee, and she tasted like cigarettes but they loved it. It tastes them.
Ben pulled away first, "what took you so long?"
"I didn't realize why my heart was burning and why you made me feel so safe."
They sit there in each other's arms, in the silence.
"That was the most beautiful thing I've ever read, Bev."
"Impossible, you go to the library every day."
He nods, "yeah, but nothing will ever be as beautiful to me as your heart. As you."

Royalties University - How You Can Earn Ongoing Royalties

Learn the simplest way to get monthly recurring income without trading time for money. In fact…
All You Need is One Virtual Property And In Seven Days You Can Be Earning Royalties… And That’s Just the Beginning
Yes, we are open now…
Only one percent of the world’s population understand how royalties work. You can join that group by enrolling in Royalties University™ today.
From: Christopher Westra Re: Royalties University™ Nine Month Education Program
Dear Friend,
Learning how you can earn royalties is perhaps the BEST education you can receive. Just imagine the ultimate benefits you get –
You create or obtain a valuable resource ONCE and then you continue selling it over and over again, for years to come!
With Royalties, you get ongoing income.
Let’s say you create an education program you sell for $20 profit.
At 50 Sold Per Month, that’s $1000 Monthly Profit
And that’s just from one product! Then you can go on to create another “virtual” or intellectual property to get royalties from.
Example: I’ve created 13 virtual properties and sold thousands of copies over the last few years. I’ve made over $100,000 in sales each year from these books and education programs.
I live off of royalties completely, and provide a living for my wife and five boys off of ongoing royalties for the virtual products I create.
Royalties are the only way to go for me, but it’s not for everyone.
Five Benefits of Earning Virtual Royalties
1 Continue to receive income long after you do the work
Yes, you will continue to receive profits for years, for virtual properties you create now.
2 Achieve Unlimited Income
You have no limits to the number of times you can sell the same item, when selling virtual (digital) products.
With real estate, you can only rent a property to one person at a time. On the other hand, with virtual properties you can sell to as many buyers as you can reach. This means your income is unlimited!
3 Receive more leisure time for you and your family
When you receive royalties, you can take a vacation or time off whenever you wish. Your “Royalty Income System” has already been set up.
4 Enjoy established expertise in the field of your choice
Because you have created a virtual property of packaged information, you are considered an expert in the field. Being an Author and Creator is fun.
Don’t worry. We will show you how to compile and create your virtual property.
5 Experience the Freedom Lifestyle with your family
Beyond just vacations, the freedom lifestyle means you can work on the projects you want to. You can wear what you want and eat when you want.
You can design your own high-energy working environment!
Note – You don’t have to use your royalties to replace a 9 to 5 job. Some people just want a little ongoing supplementary income and you can have that too.
(These are just a few comments, there are many more stories)
“An amazing aspect of earning a passive residual income is that this opportunity is open to practically anyone.
If you decide to write a book about your area of expertise, no longer are you limited by the whims of publishers.
You are free to create what you’d like and offer it to your audience.”
Apryl Jensen Author of Creating Consciously CreatingConsciously.com
“Some days I spend a lot of time on my business and other days I do nothing at all. I love the freedom and flexibility this opportunity provides me!
I spent the past two weeks vacationing with my family and while we were gone I still earned royalties on my e-books through Clickbank.
When I returned from vacation, there were SIX Clickbank checks waiting for me!”
Wendy Jensen Author of Positive Parenting FirstRateFamily.com
“This was the smartest move I could have made. I am an internet marketing guy, not a warehouse manager.
So, basically, I continued doing the same thing, only I eliminated my responsibilities at running a warehouse and now spend approximately 1-2 hours/day on my business.
I make around $4-5K in profits every month.”

“One of the greatest benefits of building a successful business is the person you’ll become… and life will never be the same again.
Two years ago I started following my dreams of a life of freedom. For nearly a year, I never earned a single cent but throughout this I never gave up.
Just a year later, and I now make more money on automatic pilot than I ever did in a regular job… and the freedom feels great.”

Add your story of royalties by Joining Royalties University™ today.
What are Royalties, Anyway?
Have you ever read the book Pride and Prejudice, or seen the movie? Jane Austen’s novels are filled with people who don’t have to work for a living. Why don’t they work?
The “upper class” in England, France and other countries owned all the land, and received a continuous passive income from the “rent” of the tenants.
Because the people who received these ongoing payments were the Princes, Dukes, and Earls, the payments came to be called “Royalties”.
The royalty knew how to “rent” their property yet still retain ownership!
Royalties are “rents” paid to you for the use of your property
You can generate royalties from any useful property. It doesn’t have to be real estate. You can get royalties from any form of intellectual property, such as books, audios, videos, movies, education programs, and even ideas.
These are called “Virtual” properties because they only exist in computer files and databases and on the internet.
Does this mean they aren’t real?
Of course not! People gladly pay for the information that enriches their life.
Virtual properties are actually so much easier to earn royalties with because there is no delivery cost on your end. The virtual products are delivered automatically and immediately through the internet!
Just Imagine the Following Happening to You….
Receiving a phone call from a pleased customer and fan, who says, “Thanks for writing your book, I just finished reading it. I can’t believe I actually got you on the phone…“
Breaking your record for daily profits, and excitedly telling a loved one about it.
Relaxing on vacation, confident that the royalties from your virtual products are bringing you hundreds of dollars per day.
Launching a new virtual product and feeling so eager to see how it is selling that you can hardly wait until after breakfast!
Waking up on an icy winter morning, and rejoicing that you don’t have to go outside because your home office is only 30 feet away.
If and when hard times come, enjoying the relief and security of having several streams of royalties that see you through.
Laughing inside at the interesting looks people give you when they ask you what you do for a job and you say, “I sell virtual properties for ongoing royalties.“
I’ve experienced all of the scenarios above, and you can too.
Royalties Can See You Through Hard Times
To show you what royalties can do, I’ll tell you about the mystery illness that struck me between 2006 and 2008.
For those three years I went to doctor after doctor, spending thousands on tests and doctor’s fees. We looked into sleep apnea, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Chron’s disease, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue, and more.
Every day I was in pain – in my joints and in my intestines. My fatigue was so bad that I had to take four naps during each day just to get through. Many nights when I went to bed, I hoped I would die in the night.
Finally, after three years, I found out I had Lyme disease.
Now that I know what I have, I’m getting better. The reason I’m sharing this is because during this time I couldn’t have held a full time job. Yet the royalties from my virtual products kept coming in.
Oh, I still worked. I could work about an hour and a half before the fatigue put me down for another nap. Our family was able to come through financially due to the Lord’s blessings and the ongoing payments from the products I had created.
Earning Royalties During Vacations!
My next example was a lot more fun. I took my wife to Hawaii for eight days for our fourteenth anniversary. During that time I didn’t even touch a computer or do any work.
Yet during those eight days I made $2362 in profit from royalties!
It’s not magic… I had the “royalties architecture” in place before I went. When you enroll in Royalties University™, you will learn how to earn royalties yourself.
One of the great benefits to royalties is that you can do it from any location or country in the world. As long as you have access to the internet, you can create digital products, sell them to the world, and collect payments.
I have friends in Malaysia, Singapore, Costa Rica, New Zealand, and the Isle of Man who are receiving royalties from their virtual creations.

Note – You will receive this lesson immediately. If you know how to buy a web domain and host it, you could be receiving your first royalties in as little as seven days.
If you lack some basic computer skills and web knowledge, then it may take you a few weeks longer.
You’ve probably seen the “Make Money” programs that cost thousands of dollars. I’ve talked to customers who joined those programs and they tell me it wasn’t worth it.
You work hard for your money, so spend it wisely.
I created Royalties University™ to be affordable to nearly everyone, even people in the “poorer” countries in the world. I’m not going to charge the thousands of dollars that I could for this education program.
If I did charge $1500 per person, then many of the people who most need this Royalties education wouldn’t be able to afford it!
I’ve been there. I didn’t start learning about earning royalties until I was 38 years old. Until then I traded time for money and lived paycheck to paycheck also. This is why I’m making this affordable for every budget.
In fact the enrollment cost for Royalties University™ is just $19 per month. The education program is nine months long, the same as a typical school year or two University Semesters.
I’ve got a years worth of lessons on earning royalties, but I’ll compress them into nine months to save you money.
You can cancel your enrollment at any time. If you aren’t getting results, then it doesn’t cost you anything.
“Christopher, that’s a real deal… wow!
… so what’s the catch?”
Yes, I know that’s a low enrollment price, and there is a catch…
Only 1000 (And Shrinking Fast) Members to Royalties University™!
I’ve placed a cap on enrollments at 1,000 members. Once these initial memberships are taken (and it won’t take long), no more will be available.
I’m doing this to keep things manageable for me, and to keep customer service high for you. This royalties education is available for 1,000 people at a time so enroll now.
If you wait, you may have to wait nine months until some members graduate and some spots are opened up.
Those who have worked with me over the years know that I stick with my deals. When I said we would take 100 Charter Members to I Create Profits, we only allowed 100, and then increased the price.
So take this cap seriously.
Many people miss out on a special deal, and then regret it later. Don’t let this happen to you.
What is the worst case scenario if you sign up now? You pay $19, find that the Royalties University isn’t for you, and then get your money refunded.
That’s not much risk. I’m taking all the risk for you.
I know the life changing nature of being able to earn royalties and want to give this knowledge to those who will make the most of it.
Yes, this is YOU.
You Can Cancel Enrollment or Get a Refund Easily
Royalties University enrollment is handled through a company called Clickbank. They are a fully secure site. I’ll teach you more about Clickbank in one of your lessons.

P.S. Let me tell you something about decisions. Powerful people make Meta-Decisions.
A “Meta” decision is a decision that impacts your life for years to come.
Here are three quick examples:
Going out on a date is a whim. Deciding on one girl to marry and live with for the rest of my life was a Meta-Decision.
Building a sandpile is a nice project. Deciding to build my own home was a Meta-Decision.
Choosing to work out once is a great choice. Deciding to become a Black Belt in the Martial Arts was a Meta-Decision.
You’ve made Meta-Decisions in your life before, and I encourage you to make one right now by enrolling in Royalties University™. If you don’t join, your next year will be much the same as the last year.

Babies Having Babies (Andre Silva OS)
AN: This one is for the lovely anon who requested an Andre Silva one shot involving pregnancy. I hope this has just enough cuteness and enough drama as you asked for, and I hope you like it. Please guys, share your thoughts, I can’t even tell you how much that means to me.<3 Enjoy! Lots of love xoxo PS: I apologize for not posting this sooner, work has just been crazy lately. Please don’t hate me. It was the morning of her big sister's wedding and Michelle was going through the house checking once again if everything was in order. Her sister has decided to have the wedding in their family home back in Marseille which was a great idea since the house had a huge backyard which could take all their family and friends. Michelle was particularly looking forward to seeing some of her friends and family members whom she hadn't seen since she left for college three years ago, and a lot of things have changed since then.
The house was fairly silent as Michelle roamed around. The only noise she could hear was coming from the outside where her mother and aunt were supervising the workers who were there to arrange the tables. Her sister was still fast asleep and Michelle was thankful for that considering that it was her big day, and she needed to get as much sleep as possible to be able to combat all the anxiety and excitement which was bound to follow her throughout the day.
As she entered the hallway, Michelle noticed that one of the decorations hanging from the wall has loosen up and was about to fall off, and just as she was about to stand on her tip toes and stretch to reach it, a male hand pinned the decoration in place. Michelle looked up only to see Mark, her sister’s soon-to-be brother in law standing in front of her.
“You really are trying to give poor Andre a heart attack, are you?" he teased. "I've seen how much he worries, please don't frighten the poor guy like that."
And just as Michele opened her mouth to respond, she felt a pair of familiar hands wrap around her from behind. As he leaned in and kissed her cheek, his gorgeous smell filling her lungs, she leaned back against his chest.
"Is my beautiful wife again not listening to what I've asked her at least a million times. Take. It. Easy." he said softly, emphasizing every word as he rested his hands on top of her big pregnant belly. As he lovingly caressed her belly, she could feel the baby immediately starting to move and kick; it was obvious that this little girl already loved her daddy so very much. But who could blame her when mommy herself was still over the moon about him.
"And I've told you just as many times, love,"-Michelle smiled sweetly turning to face him, "you worry too much."
“Of course I worry, you two are my whole world,” he answered sincerely.
As his phone began to ring, Mark excused himself from the couple, and Michelle turned to face Andre once again, “And that is why I love you, but I know what I‘m doing, so just trust me, okay?”
“I do trust you baby,” Andre reasoned, “but you are 34 weeks pregnant- the baby could come out any minute. You can’t keep jumping and running around like you used to before the baby.”
“But I feel fine,” she protested.
“I know you do,” he let out a worried sigh, “and baby, I’m so thankful you and the baby are both healthy and feeling great, but I just need to take it slowly, okay? Just until the baby comes. Please you can do it for me”
And then he looked at her with his puppy eyes and her heart melted and she just took his head in her hands and started kissing him, muttering “I promise” somewhere in between the kisses.
As he started kissing her deeper, she could feel the familiar tingling feeling between her legs. Damn, she couldn't wait to get this baby out so she could have proper sex with her husband.
Andre was the one to break the kiss, kissing her on the forehead. “Why don’t you go lay down for a bit,” he instructed more than asked.
“I'm not tired,” she smiled, “besides, there's just so much left to do”.
“And there are so many other people who can do that, you don't have to do everything you know?” Andre was starting to get annoyed.
Her self-defense mechanism was already on guard, but as she opened her mouth to defend herself, a female voice called "Andy!" and soon enough quick footsteps began getting closer.
It was her mother. "Oh Andy, sweetie, can you please help me out with something." she said breathing heavily, probably from all from all the rush she's been into all morning.
"Hey darling," she said kissing Michelle's cheek, “how are you feeling today?”
“I'm feeling great mom, why do you need Andre?”
“Oh the lady with the cake has called, said they had a business emergency- can you imagine- what kind of emergency can a pastry shop have?! Anyhow, all her drivers are away and she has no free car to deliver the cake,” she sighed in agony. “Andy, please, will you be a sweetheart and bring it. I'll give you the directions.”
“Of course,” Andre smiled, glad that he could help. He then turned to Michelle, “Baby, just get some rest, okay?”
Her mother laughed good-naturedly. “Oh, sweetie she doesn’t know how to do that. Let me tell you something about this one. When she was a child, there was no way to get her to nap during the day. Not even when she had a fever. Nope. She would just go outside and play with the rest of the kids on the street. I would literally have to drag her inside to give her the medicine. And she’d still get better sooner than the rest of the kids.”
Michelle raised her eyebrows at her mother, annoyed that she had to tell Andre stuff like that. “But she got it from me.” The older women admitted. “I was just the same as she is now. I couldn’t lie still throughout either of my pregnancies. You know, I was actually apple picking on my father’s farm when this one decided to come out. We barely made it to the hospital!” Andre couldn’t help but laugh at the story and neither could Michelle. “My point is, I know you worry, but she’ll do just fine. That’s just how she’s always been.”
Then she turned to her daughter handing her a small basket that she was carrying, “Darling, please pack these presents for the guests, would you?” the women smiled sweetly before winking at Andre, “That will keep her busy”. Then she took him under the arm and started leading him down the stairs, giggling and gesturing something vividly to him.
Michelle just shook her head as she could literally feel her heart smile. She couldn’t be happier that her mother has finally accepted Andre. The situation wasn’t always so pink and shiny between them. Not even close. And not just concerning her mother, but her whole family honestly. Michelle was always their pride and joy and they were all so very disappointed when, instead of choosing “so many top-class universities that France had to offer,” Michelle accepted a scholarship for studying architecture in an university in Portugal. Her family had dreams about her becoming a lawyer or a doctor, and they were highly disappointed when she chose architecture instead. But they knew how strong headed she was and eventually they just accepted her decision. And soon Michelle proved them that she made the right choice. Just in her first semester she won the opportunity to work as a student intern on one of the projects of the biggest architecture company in the country. And success after success seemed to follow. The other part, which her parents were not so happy about was that just after she had finished her first semester, Michelle met Andre.
If the day is to be judged by the morning, then these two should’ve known that their relationship was going to be a rocky one judging its beginning- they met while she was on a date with another man! After that they saw each other a couple more times, then Michelle went home during the winter holidays, not really believing she would see him again. But after she came back, only to find him waiting for her with flowers in front of her campus, the two became completely inseparable. It took them just a few short months to fall madly in love. After her last final exam for the year, Andre proposed as they sat in their bathing suits, eating ice cream and watching the sunset on the beach. There wasn’t anyone around to take cute pictures of them, nor was there anyone around to celebrate their engagement with. Their friends thought they’ve gone completely mad considering they were both barely 20, and so did his family. Her family on the other hand didn’t even want to hear any of that. Michelle wanted to take Andre to France with her during the summer to meet her family, but they didn’t even consider the possibility before rejecting it. Thankfully, his family was a bit more considerate and they slowly accepted their engagement, falling completely in love with Michelle as they got to know her.
They got married right before the beginning of her fall semester and moved into a small apartment which wasn’t the nicest but was all they could afford. Their wedding was small with just a couple of friends and a few of Andre’s family members. Michelle’s family was still absolutely furious at her, but she would forever be thankful to her sister and Antoine, her soon- to be- husband, who came for the wedding and actually gave them a chance. Soon after the wedding Andre started playing in FC Porto and Michelle started an internship in an architecture company with a symbolic salary. She was willing to work part time as a waitress or something, but Andre pressured her to pursue her dreams even if it meant that he wouldn’t have it easy. Slowly, Michelle’s family began to cool off and they started calling and visiting and slowly accepting their marriage.
Then, just a little before their first anniversary, Michelle peed on a stick in the toilet on the stadium while Andre was playing. Two very strong red-ish lines told her that she was pregnant, or at least that’s what the instruction said and she has read that about eleven times. She couldn’t even wait to get home to tell him the news but ran to him as soon as the game was over, and they laughed together as the whole team cheered them on. This time, both of their families went equally crazy going on and on about how they were still even too young to raise themselves let alone a baby, how irresponsible they’ve been, how immature, and the list goes on and on.
All Michelle and Andre did was laugh and enjoy this utter bliss they felt. However, asowevhOsjsjsnnbbasssssssm  the baby was growing and with it Michelle, so seemed to grow their parent’s compassion and affection for the baby because they slowly started accepting their grandchild, and Andre as well.
Now- due in less than two weeks- Michelle lovingly stroked her belly and the baby that she’s grown to love more than words can describe, as she watched her mother and everyone in her family accept the man she loved with all her heart like he was one of their own.
 xxx
The rest of the morning flew by in performing finishing touches, and it was almost noon when Michelle finally found some time to do her hair and make-up. Just as she was putting on her lipstick, Andre walked by in his suit. His eyes widened at the sight of her as he whispered in awe that she looked breathtaking, and Michelle couldn’t stop smiling either because he looked absolutely dashing in that suit.
He needed help with his tie, but Michelle wasn’t quite fond of the one he had chosen. As she turned to the drawers to look for a more suitable one, she felt a sharp pain run through her lower stomach.
“Baby,” she gasped in pain grabbing onto the table for support, unable to say anything else as the pain kept cutting through her like a knife. Andre was already by her side holding her.
He led her to the bed but when she screamed due to a new wave of pain that washed over her, he completely lost it. He didn’t even know what he was supposed to do, even though he himself has insisted that they go through this plan only a hundred times.
“Get the keys!” with the pain taking the best of her, Michelle screamed at him. Andre immediately started roaming through the drawers, completely taking the content out of them, as he frantically searched for the keys. Paranoid and unable to find them, he even asked Michelle if she had them before realizing they were in his pocket all along. “What is going on here?” Her mother questioned as she entered the room after hearing the loud noise. When she saw Michelle lying in bed, holding her belly, her face twisted in pain, she quickly ran to her side.
As she noticed that all the color has left Andre’s face as he kept fidgeting, unsure what to do to help his wife, the older women told them both  in a soothing voice that they can do this, that they’ve prepared for this and that their baby girl is waiting for them at the end of this day. This seemed to calm Andre down, as now he was finally able to think straight again.
“But this is too early, why is she coming so early?” Michelle questioned frantically, realizing that her due date is not for another 10 days!
“That is perfectly normal, sweetie; hardly any baby is born on the due date,” her mother stroked her hair trying to calm her down. “The baby usually comes when she feels ready and looks like my granddaughter is pretty ready.”
Andre bent down kissing his wife’s forehead, “We can do this baby, we are ready,” he whispered as Michelle smiled at him thankfully.
She was already starting to mentally prepare herself for the delivery and for having to miss her sister’s wedding after all, when the pain all of a sudden just stopped, as abruptly as it has come.
It seemed to have been a false alarm but her mother waited around a little longer just to be sure. When nothing happened, she instructed her daughter to have some rest and this time, Michelle didn’t object. Andre laid down beside her, stroking her hair, as she rested her head on his chest.
“I’m so embarrassed,” she muttered, “Can’t believe I scared you all like that”
“Are you kidding me,” Andre laughed, ”I was a total mess! I think I would’ve lost my head had it only not been attached to my neck.”
They laughed wholeheartedly. “Seems like men really aren’t made for this” Michelle commented as Andre leaned down to kiss her lips.
“Not even close” he said sincerely, “but I promise to stay by your side through it all.” He kissed her again.
“Just don’t faint please,” Michelle only half- joked as she snuggled deeper in his arms.
xxx
The wedding has gone as planned and was absolutely mesmerizing. At times, as she watched her sister in the stunning wedding dress and her whole family there, supporting her, it made Michelle a bit sad that she couldn’t have experienced that on her own wedding day. But she would then glance at her husband’s hand holding her own and at her round belly, and she couldn’t feel more blessed to have come this far with the man who has completely stole her heart. And when her sister and her now officially husband kissed, she cried out of pure happiness.
The newly-weds have left near the end of the evening, right after they’ve cut the cake, having a flight for Sicily to catch. Guests have started to leave immediately after them, leaving only the closest family members to continue chatting and sharing stories in the spirit of the beautiful day that was past them. By midnight, all of them have already gone to bed, and Andre and Michelle were definitely the first ones to do so. However, while Andre fell asleep as soon as he hit the pillow, Michelle couldn’t fall asleep for the life of her. In between bathroom breaks which now seemed to be less than an hour apart, she kept tossing and turning, unable to sleep. This was nothing uncommon, as her life was practically like this during the whole third trimester. However, tonight it was accompanied with cramp like pain which seemed to come in waves since early evening. She didn’t want to say anything to Andre because she didn’t want to get him worried, but he was able to see that something was off since she wasn’t as chatty as she usually was nor did she want to dance as much as he knew she’d like to. But she just told him that she was exhausted and this seemed enough as he then took her to the garden seater, where they sat and rocked all evening long while he gently massaged her back with one hand and caressed her belly with another one. This seemed to help as the pain subsided. However, as the night went on it started to become stronger again. Michelle wasn’t worried; after what has happened today she simply thought that her body was slowly preparing for the experience of child birth. Nevertheless, she headed for the kitchen to have a glass of warm milk, afraid that she might wake Andre up with her tossing and turning.
“Can’t sleep?” she heard familiar voice say as she sat in the kitchen, sipping her milk. Once again, it was Mark. She gave him a small smile, shaking her head.
“Sounds familiar. When Camile was pregnant with our youngest one, I would find her like this every other night,” he said pouring himself a glass of water and taking the seat across the table.”
“But you don’t have a long way to go any more,” he smiled as he watched her stroke her belly gently.” “About ten more days,” she said gazing lovingly at her round belly.
“You feeling alright?” Mark questioned as he watched her flinch in pain for a split of a second.
“Yeah,” she smiled “it just feels like this young lady may decide to come out a bit sooner” she whispered.
They continued talking for a good half an hour, before Michelle decided to return to bed. She picked up the dishes that they’ve used and carried them to the sink to wash them. Suddenly an “oh-no” escaped her lips loud enough for Mark to hear.
“What? Did you cut yourself?” But as he stood up to check, he noticed a small pool of water on the floor.
“What the- where did this come from?” he asked in confusion, but awareness washed over him when he saw Michelle’s facial expression.
“Did your-?”
“I think you should wake Andre up,” she breathed. ”My water just broke.”
AN: Would you guys possibly maybe kinda want to read more about how these two met? I already have the whole story of that event laid out- and it’s super cute and funny tbh- I just need to know if you’d be interesting in reading that. Also, please tell me if my one shots are too long. I feel like they are too long and I wan to know if this bothers you. I personally love reading long long imagines/one shots/fan fictions, and I’m always like *want more*, and I quite enjoy both details and dialogues, which is why I write such long one shots. But please just tell me how you feel about this, I would really appreciate it. <3

It was the one year anniversary of Ladybug and Chat Noir’s first appearance. Alya, with the help of Chloe surprisingly enough, was able to convince Principle Damocles to let students have a themed day around the heroes. It was set on a Friday, a few days after the official anniversary. Classes would continue as usual but students would be able to dress in Ladybug and Chat inspired outfits and there would be an extravagant lunch paid for by the Mayor himself.
Marinette was excited about the themed day. She knew her partner didn’t get nearly enough recognition so dedicating an entire sewing project to him was the least Marinette could do. Plus, it was a chance to finally take one of her many Chat Noir inspired designs and make it a reality. Choosing just one of them was difficult, she had a lot. Since the cat boy had begun to visit her on a regular basis, the number of Chat related outfit ideas she had increased tenfold. It wasn’t that she was checking him out or anything, no, no way. She was just admiring the suit’s design and how it hugged his body. It was just designer instinct. Yes, just designer instinct.
She had finally settled on a skirt and shirt combo. The shirt was simple enough, loose fitting in a green as close to the color of Chat’s eyes as she could find. The sleeves were short and had a slight flounce to them. The skirt was slightly trickier, only because it was the more detailed of the two pieces. Circle skirts were one of the first things Marinette had learned how to make so it was an absolute breeze to make the black skirt that was the base of the piece. Adding on the two cat paw suspenders had been a piece of cake as well. A simple stitch to attach them in the back with two buttons in the front and the black straps with green paw pads at the end were ready to go. Marinette knew she could leave it at that but she felt like it was missing something. She sketched out a simple design and began to embroider a line of frolicking cats in the same green as the suspender paws and shirt along the bottom of the skirt.
That was how Marinette ended up taking two weeks on an outfit that would have taken a day. It was the night before the one year anniversary themed day that she finally finished. The most exciting part about finishing an outfit was trying it on all together, finally seeing her vision brought to life. She was pulling out accessories to go along with the outfit when she heard a tap on her skylight.
He hadn’t seen the outfit yet, no one had, Marinette didn’t like to show anyone her work until it was finished. She went up to the skylight to open it for Chat. Once he was inside she began to bounce up and down, unable to hold in her giddiness. “It’s ready! I haven’t even tried on the complete outfit yet. Do you want to be the first one to see it? I figure it’s only right since you inspired it!”
Chat beamed at her. She had been talking about the outfit she was creating for the themed day at school for weeks. She had only let a few details slip out, including that her outfit had been inspired by him. Every time Chat thought about it he became slightly flustered, feeling his cheeks heat. He had no clue why though. “I would absolutely love to see it Princess! It’s been killing me that you’ve been so secretive about it!”
She began to scramble around her room. Chat saw her grab a pair of socks from her drawer, a pair of converse, a leather jacket, and a garment bag. He already felt his face growing warm at the thought of Marinette in a leather jacket. She didn’t notice his flush in her excited state, rushing out of her room to change in the bathroom. Chat sat down on her lounge to wait for her return. He placed his gloved hands onto his cheeks trying to cool them down.
A few minutes later Marinette’s head peeked into the room. “Close your eyes kitty. You have to see it all at once to get the full effect.” Chat did what he’d been told but not before he noticed she’d changed her usual red ribbon tied pigtails for a high bun with a green ribbon at the base. His face was once again heated. Marinette stepped into the room and shut the door. Placing herself in front of Chat she finally said the magic words, even though she was suddenly nervous. “Okay, open your eyes.”
His eyes flew open, more than ready to drink the outfit in. Marinette looked more beautiful in his colors than he could have ever imagined. She was holding the leather jacket he’d seen her grab, probably so he would be able to see the paw suspenders attached at her waist fully. The skirt hit just below mid-thigh and not too far below that were the tops of her black knee high socks. She pivoted her toe slightly so he could see that there were two green paw prints sewn at the tops of the socks’ backs. His favorite part was the scene of kittens playing along the skirt. She noticed where his eyes were fixed. “I did the kitten scene by hand, it’s why it took so long. It was completely worth it though, I feel like it adds a little bit of your playfulness to the outfit.” Chat met her eyes for a moment and saw nothing but warmth and compassion there. It was in that moment where he realized two things. The first being that if they were in an anime, his nose would be gushing blood. The second being that he had a raging crush on Marinette.
Chat felt like he wasn’t getting enough oxygen and when Marinette slid on the cropped leather jacket in her hands he knew he was completely done for. She did a small spin, skirt flaring around her, and suddenly Chat’s world went black.
Chat fell back against the lounge completely unconscious. Marinette began to panic! “Tikki, oh my god, what happened?” Marinette was now leaning over Chat, checking his pulse and making sure he was breathing. “Do you think he’s okay? He’s never said anything about a fainting problem before.”
Tikki flew out of her hiding spot where she had been watching the exchange. The small goddess was snickering slightly. “I think you broke him with the spin Marinette.”
Confused Marinette turned and began to question her kwami. Before Tikki could explain the look she had seen on Chat’s face when he saw Marinette in her Chat inspired outfit, there was a bright flash of green light. With all the thoughts racing through her head, Marinette didn’t have time to stop herself before instinctually looking over to where the light had emanated from. Her eyes landed on one unconscious Adrien Agreste. She heard laughter and her eyes snapped to the small cat kwami floating above his charge. The kwami wheezed out a sentence amongst his laughter. “Hi, I’m Plagg. You should see the look on your face. It’s absolutely priceless!” His laughter was cut short when Tikki zipped over and punched him in the arm. “Hey! What was that for?”
“Plagg! Why did you detransorm? You know they’re keeping their identities a secret for now! Tikki was tapping her foot in midair scowling at her destructive counterpart.
“Oh come on Tikki, you know you couldn’t wait until these two idiots fessed up and realized they both had feelings for each other.” He pointed to Marinette. “If I hadn’t detransormed this one would have played Adrien’s passing out over finding her so attractive as some sort of medical problem.” Plagg then pointed at a still unconscious Adrien. “This one would have used the excuse too since he thinks that Marinette is a blessing on this Earth and way too good for him. He hadn’t even let himself admit he had feeling for her until today. Now they can sit down once lover boy wakes up and have a nice long talk about their feelings.”
Tikki was impressed. Normally, Plagg didn’t think things through but in this case, it seemed he had thought about it at least somewhat. “Hmm, you do make some accurate points Plagg. I know Marinette has been developing feelings for Chat for a while, even though she hasn’t admitted it yet, and I’m sure you know about her crush on Adrien. Finding out that both of them have feelings for both sides of each other is going to make this so much easier.”
The two kwami were interrupted by Marinette abruptly starting to stutter out words. She hadn’t even realized Tikki had been speaking, she was too caught up on what Plagg had said. “F-feelings? F-for me? F-for Marinette? H-he think.” The girl pointed at herself. “M-me too good?” She violently began to shake her head and pointed to Adrien again. “H-he too good.”
Plagg rolled his eyes and turned to Tikki. “Wow, they really are perfect for each other. I can hear the wedding bells already.”
“W-wedding?” Then Marinette was slumped across Adrien as her world went black.
“Nice going Plagg now they’re both out cold.” Tikki had just finished her sentence when a male groan came from the lounge two superheroes were currently passed out on. Marinette landing on him must have jostled Adrien awake.
Adrien reached up a hand to rest on his face. “Plagg what the hell happened?” Previous events must have reentered Adrien’s brain for his eyes snapped open a moment later to land on the unconscious girl draped over his lap. “Shit Plagg, she saw me detransform didn’t she?” The question of why he had destransformed in the first place died on his tongue as he looked up to see not one, but two kwami floating nearby. One looked like a Ladybug which could only mean one thing. His eyes snapped back to Marinette then back up to the kwami. “Maribug is Ladinette? I mean Ladinette is Maribug? I mean Marinette is Ladybug?” The two kwami shook their heads up and down in unison. Adrien began to pull at his hair with the hand that had been resting on his face. “Oh no, this is not good. Marinette and Ladybug are so amazing when they were separate people. Now that I know that they’re one person I’m absolutely certain she’s too good to be associating with a walking disaster like myself. What am I going to do? What if she never wants to talk to Chat anymore because I’m Adrien? I’m totally screwed.”
“Wow Plagg you’re right, they’re pretty much made for each other. I think I hear the cries of their future children in the distance.”
“Ch-children? Maribug and Chadrien children?” Adrien smiled brightly for a moment before his eyes rolled back into his head and he was unconscious once more.
Both kwami sighed. “Well at least he seemed happy about that idea. I guess now we just wait until they wake up. What do you want to do Tikki?”
“I say we catch up. It has been centuries since we last saw each other!” Plagg nodded his head and Tikki took him to the hideout Marinette had created for her. The two kwami talked until they heard the two teens stirring. Plagg was about to fly out when Tikki grabbed onto his tail. “Let’s see what they do before we come out.”
Marinette slid off the warm mass she was laying on, her butt hitting the floor. Opening her eyes, she looked up into the green eyes of Adrien Agreste who also seemed to be just waking up as well. She was confused as to why Adrien was in her room at all until he stretched. It was a very cat like stretch that she remembered seeing Chat do hundreds of times. Adrien being Chat Noir slammed back into her mind so quickly that she let out a small meep.
Adrien’s eyes focused on Marinette. He was confused as to why Marinette was looking at Chat the way she normally looked at Adrien, eyes blown wide and her hand over her mouth. Then he saw his ungloved hand and remembered waking up detransformed with two kwami floating in front of him. Marinette being Ladybug slammed back into his mind so quickly that he also let out a small meep. He would forever deny that it was higher in pitch than Marinette’s, no matter what she said.
“I-I’m sorry I found out your identity Adrien. I didn’t realize the light from your detransormation was the light from your detransormation until I’d already looked.” She was looking down and playing with the hem of the Chat Noir inspired skirt she was still wearing. She looked dejected and Adrien was slightly scared of that look. It probably meant she was disappointed.
“It’s alright, my lady.” Her head snapped up at his words. He was rubbing the back of his neck with a bashful look across his face. Marinette thought it was incredibly adorable. “I’m sorry I found out yours too. Although, I’m not sure why your kwami was just out in the open like than since I didn’t know yet.”
The conversation that Tikki and Plagg had in front of Marinette was slowly coming back to her and she began to blush. “I think our kwamis decided that it was time for us to know who the other was.”
“I-I hope you’re not too disappointed that it’s just socially awkward Adrien Agreste under the mask. I mean you’re strong and confidant. You’re able to talk to everyone without a problem, except me but that’s to be expected since we didn’t get off on the best foot. You’re just so amazing Marinette and I’m just me.” He wasn’t looking at her to see the stunned look that was painted across her features.
When she finally spoke, she didn’t even stutter while looking up at Adrien. “There is absolutely no possible way I could be disappointed in the fact that my crime fighting partner is Adrien Agreste. In fact, I’m surprised that you’re not disappointed in me.” He looked at her in shock then, like he couldn’t believe she would think he’d be disappointed. “I’m clumsy and can’t even talk to the guy I like without stuttering around him.”
His face fell a little and Marinette got a little worried about his reaction to her confession. “Oh, s-so you like someone? T-that’s nice.” If one were to listen closely, they could hear two small hands hitting two small foreheads at Adrien’s words. Marinette thought she’d spelled that last part out pretty clearly but like Adrien said, he didn’t always pick up on social cues.
Marinette forced herself to make direct eye contact with Adrien so there would be no doubt in what she meant. “It’s you kitty. I like you. The reason I can’t talk to Adrien is because I have a massive crush on him.” She pointed to the bare wall above her desk where there was a faint rectangular outline, like something had been there for a while. “You see that outline over there? I used to have an Adrien Agreste poster pinned there. I only took it down when Chat started to visit because I didn’t want him to tease me about it. Adrien, you are a sweet, kind, and caring person. There is no one else I’d rather have as a partner.”
He was about to cry. Adrien could feel the tightness of his throat and the burning in his eyes. He never realized Marinette/Ladybug cared about him this much. He though his feelings for both girls, who were now one, would never be returned. He cleared his throat of the tight, tearful feeling before speaking. “I’ve loved Ladybug since the day I met her and I’ve loved Marinette since she let this stray cat start hanging out with her. When I first came to you as Chat I was trying to understand why you were so nervous around me as Adrien. I thought that I’d stop by a few times, work the question into conversation, then move on. However, after that first night where we just played games and ate croissants I knew I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from coming over. If the only way I could have you in my life was as Chat, then that was better than nothing. I-I love you Marinette and there is no one else I’d rather have as a partner either.”
A hand was over Marinette’s mouth and tears were slowing moving down her cheeks. When Adrien finished with the most beautiful speech Marinette had ever heard, she rose from the floor, flinging her arms around his neck. “I love you too Adrien. I love you so much.” His arms were around her, squeezing her tightly. He was kind of afraid that this whole thing was a dream and this beautiful girl would be ripped from his arms when his alarm clock went off.
Marinette pulled away slightly and rubbed her thumbs across his cheeks. He didn’t even know he’d been crying. She slowly leaned forward and softly brushed her lips against his own. He caught her as she began to pull away, adding a little more force to the next kiss. The kisses tasted of salt from the tears that had leaked from both of their eyes but neither had ever tasted anything sweeter.
The two were so lost in each other that it took them awhile to hear the small slow claps happening behind them. They pulled apart to look at the two kwami floating nearby. “I feel as though some thanks are in order considering this wouldn’t have happened if I’d kept you transformed.” Plagg crossed is arms smugly while grinning like a fool.
“Thanks buddy, I will definitely be increasing your daily cheese amount for this. Don’t you worry.” He gazed back down at Marinette how looked absolutely stunning with tear stained cheeks and kiss bruised lips. The thought was out of his mouth before he could stop it. “You should be the model in this relationship. I mean you look perfect even after crying. I didn’t know that was even possible.”
She quirked a brow at him “Relationship hu? I didn’t know we were in a relationship now? Also, you’re still looking pretty good yourself.” Adrien blushed deeply. He had just sat there for who knows how long kissing Marinette and he hadn’t even asked her out yet.
“W-well if you want to be in a relationship that is. I-I mean do you want to be in a relationship? I-I mean, Marinette with you go out with me?”
“Of course I will kitty, I was just messing with you. I have to admit it feels slightly empowering to have you stuttering and blushing over me for once.” Marinette chuckled and bopped him on the nose. His blush only grew more intense.
“W-well my lady, you are more than welcome to make me stutter whenever you’d like.” He gave her another quick kiss before calling on Plagg to transform. “Unfortunately, I think it is time for me to go since we have class in the morning. If it’s okay with you, can we walk to school together tomorrow? I’ll have my driver drop me off here and then we can walk the rest of the way together?”
“I’d love nothing more.” Marinette gave him another sweet kiss before her curiosity got the better of her. “Hey, who are you dressing as tomorrow? Yourself or me?”
“That’s for me to know and you to find out. Though I can tell you I don’t look nearly as good in my outfit as you do in yours.” She laughed like she thought he was kidding. “I’m being completely serious Princess. I literally passed out because you look so stunning!” Now she was blushing and he realized Marinette was right, making her blush really was satisfying now that he knew what it meant.
With one last kiss Chat Noir jumped out Marinette’s skylight and was gone. Marinette sighed in contentment. “Tikki, am I dreaming?”
“Nope but you really should be. Go to bed Marinette, you have a boyfriend you’re walking to school with in the morning. You don’t want to oversleep.” Marinette did a little butt wiggle dance before she got ready for bed.
The next morning Marinette was up bright and early. She was completely decked out in her Chat Noir outfit, even applying a green lipstick that Adrien hadn’t seen the night before. At least she still had that to surprise him with. She had just finished her breakfast when she heard his voice downstairs. Marinette quickly reapplied her lipstick and grabbed her things.
She raced into the bakery startling everyone. Before Adrien could get a good look at her face she had planted a kiss on his cheek. When she pulled away, he noticed the green lipstick which surly had left a mark. He smiled at his new girlfriend even though his face was burning. “Well hello to you too Princess. I was just asking your father if you were ready.” Adrien gestured to the man standing in front of them, who Marinette hadn’t realized was there during her mission to Adrien’s cheek.
Marinette’s face flamed as she looked up at her father’s shocked expression which then imploded into laughter. He began to call for Marinette’s mother. “Sabine, you have to come see this! Our ‘gets tongue tide around Adrien Agreste’ daughter just ran up and planted one on his cheek!”
“No way! Hold on I’ll grab the camera.” Marinette’s manma could barely be heard through the kitchen but her words were still clear. Marinette grabbed Adrien’s wrist with one hand, a croissant with the other, and quickly headed for the door while her father laughed behind them.
She pulled him a little way down the sidewalk before stopping and turning to him. “I’m sorry, I didn’t realize he was there and I really wanted to make you blush again because as you know it’s one of my new favorite things, and…” Marinette’s words trailed off as she took in Adrien’s outfit. She wasn’t surprised that he had gone with a Ladybug theme but damn did it look good on him. The red shirt with black spots was tighter around his chest and arms, showing off the muscles he worked as they battled together. The black jeans he’d gone with hugged him just right and she’d be lying if she said she didn’t wanted him to turn around so she could ogle his butt. The outfit was completed with red converse. Looking down at their feet, both clad in the popular shoe, she was reminded of those cheesy relationship pictures where it shows a couple’s feet with the girl on her tip toes. Just because they were cheesy didn’t mean she was opposed to it, so she stood on her tip toes and kissed him quickly. Now his cheek and lips were marked with her green lipstick.
Marinette realized she was still holding the croissant she had grabbed from the bakery. She held it out to her boyfriend who looked down at her in question. “I know that the croissants are your favorite so I grabbed you one.” She shrugged and smiled. Adrien took the croissant from her and bit into it.
He began to speak with a mouth still full of croissant. “This is why I love you. You’re always making sure I’m well fed.”
“I love you too Adrien.” Marinette blushed slightly at saying the words in public but Adrien just smiled and grabbed her hand as they continued their walk to school. When they arrived in the courtyard, it was still pretty early so not many people were standing around yet. Those who were there however began to whisper about Adrien and Marinette walking to school hand in hand with Marinette’s green lipstick on not only his cheek but lips as well.
The couple sat down in their seats to wait for the rest of their classmates to file in and class to begin. Adrien was turned around in his chair and Marinette was leaning forward so they could talk quietly. The two were so wrapped up in their conversation that they didn’t notice their classmates giving them odd looks at their closeness, the shocked expressions of seeing remnants of Marinette’s lipstick on Adrien’s mouth, or even Alya and Nino high fiving then taking a ton of pictures.
It was when the room went silent that they finally noticed something was up. “Oh Adrikins! Don’t you want to see my Ladybug outfit? I bet you’ll think it’s way better than that green monstrosity Marinette put together. Plus, green lipstick? Who would even wear that?”
Calmly, Adrien turned to Chloe so she could see his face. The brighter stamp of green lips on his cheek was what she noticed first and her eyes went wide. Her face drained of color when she noticed the green on his lips as well. Chloe’s eyes shot to Marinette who was innocently reapplying her lipstick. “I do like your ladybug outfit Chloe. However, I really like the green that Marinette’s wearing.” That was all Adrien had planned to say, compliment Chloe and defend Marinette. However, it seemed as though Adrien’s mouth had a mind of its own when it came to talking about his girlfriend. “Did you know she matched the exact color of Chat Noir’s eyes? She even hand embroidered the skirt herself! I felt faint when I saw her today, she just looks so cute. I’m so lucky she’s my girlfriend.” Adrien sighed dreamily and looked back at Marinette, who looked like a deer caught in headlights. He realized why a moment later, everyone’s eyes were directed at her. Maybe he went a bit too far gushing about her but could anyone really blame him? She was remarkable.
The color had returned to Chloe’s face in full force, she was as red as the ladybug dress she had on. A high-pitched noise emanated from the girl and she stomped out of the room. The room was silent for a few moments before cheers rang out. Everyone began to congratulate them on finally admitting their feelings for the other. Money was exchanged by a few classmates and there were even some chants of ‘Adrinette’ which was the ship name Alya had come up with.
The teacher finally walked into the room and the chaos quieted down. The secret superheroes of Paris smiled at each other again before facing the front of the classroom. A few minutes into class, Ala and Nino simultaneously slid two pieces of paper over to their best friends. Each note only had one word on it. ‘DETAILS!!!’

Fastnet Race 1979: Restored survivor Assent heads back to the Rock
Meet the little yacht with a huge heart and history, a famous survivor of the 1979 Fastnet Race. Nic Compton sails on Assent
“There’s something special about her, you feel she can handle it” – Kit Rogers
It’s a gloomy, grey afternoon on the Solent and I’m in a camera boat taking pictures of a yacht sailing off Lymington. There’s a light breeze blowing and a moody, late afternoon glow in the sky but, to be honest, it’s not exactly blowing my socks off.
Then, the skipper starts gesticulating, making big belly signs. I don’t understand what he means – is he hungry or feeling pregnant? A few minutes later all is revealed as the crew break out a spinnaker that inflates into blue and white stripes. At the same time, the breeze picks up, and the yacht starts shooting across the jade green sea.
Suddenly, this looks like the yacht she is: one that could confound all expectations and win a major race; a little boat that could survive a serious pasting and give the big boys something to think about.
With spinnaker up and a decent breeze, Assent looks like a winner again. Photo: Nic Compton
For this is Assent, the Contessa 32 built by Jeremy Rogers in 1972 and the only boat in her class to finish the 1979 Fastnet Race, in the face of a storm which wiped out most of the fleet and killed 15 competitors.
No discussion of that tragedy is complete without reference to the small but hugely significant part this boat played.
On board for the photoshoot are the children and grandchildren of Jeremy Rogers: brothers Kit and Simon and their respective eldest children, Jonah and Hattie.

They know these waters like the back of their hands and are intuitive sailors. There’s no shouting, no panic. Their approach is cheerful and understated but there’s no doubt they know absolutely what they are doing.
Despite the banter, there’s a serious agenda here. Kit has decided to mark the 40th anniversary of that deadly Fastnet by entering Assent in this year’s race.
“The 1979 Fastnet is not something you want to celebrate,” says Kit. “It was a terrible disaster. The fact that Assent did so well and made a name for herself had nothing to do with us.
“I was 11 at the time, staying in a hotel in Plymouth with my mother and brother, waiting for my father to come back. But entering Assent in the race this year seems like a good way of commemorating that tragedy and honouring the people who died in the race.”

Fastnet Race 1979: Why was the storm so devastating?
There was nothing in the forecast at the start of the 1979 Fastnet Race to indicate a storm, but a…
As part of their qualifiers for the 2019 Fastnet Race, two weeks earlier Kit and Simon had taken part in the De Guingand Bowl Race, racing 120 miles up to Portsmouth, around the Isle of Wight to Weymouth and back.
The last leg was particularly gruelling: a 50-mile upwind beat against winds gusting up to 40 knots, with seas to match. But Assent took it all in her stride, at one point taking overall lead against some much bigger IRC boats – though her crew fared less well.
“It’s a funny thing about boats,” says Kit. “Assent is just a Contessa 32. There are 650 of them out there which all came out of the same mould and are pretty much identical. Yet there’s something special about her.
“It’s probably me projecting a bit, but somehow she feels different, because I’ve got this narrative running, because I know where she’s been and you feel she can handle it, which gives you that bit more confidence. I was sick as dog, but she was great!”

An accidental sailor
Assent was launched in 1972 as hull No 25, and was originally named Tessa of Worth. She was bought by the late Willy Ker in 1976 and renamed Assent because, so the story goes, he needed his wife’s assent to buy the boat.
Ker was an accidental sailor with a love of adventure. An engineer in the army, he was posted in Kiel after World War II and learned to sail on a fleet of yachts requisitioned by Britain as part of its war reparations. While he was in the army, he attended a university course on mapping and joined a group of volunteers charting the west coast of Canada by horse.
He then organised an expedition with a team of dogs to the Northwest Territories, mapping Great Slave Lake, on the edge of the Arctic Circle. These sailing voyages gave him a taste for remote areas that was to stay with him for the rest of his life.
The programme cover of the 1979 Fastnet Race, which Assent won in class
But Ker also had a competitive streak, and a year after buying Assent entered the 1977 Fastnet Race with his son, Alan, as crew. Two years later, Assent was back, this time with Alan at the helm and a bunch of his friends, all in their early twenties, as crew. Assent was entered in Class V, the smallest class, which included 14 other Contessa 32s.
Her race started badly enough with a collision with the French half-tonner Tikocco, and Assent was forced to turn back and restart five minutes later. By that evening, the boat was becalmed off Lulworth while the crew enjoyed a hearty meal of beef stew. It took them another 36 hours to reach the Lizard, where they anchored for four hours in fog waiting for the tide to turn.
It wasn’t until the evening of the third day that the 1755 shipping forecast gave the first warning of a possible gale, by which time Assent was well into the Irish Sea, having passed Land’s End earlier that afternoon.
In his account written straight after the race, crew Gordon Williams wrote: ‘Fiona prepared a fighting supper of spaggeti [sic] bolognaise to which the majority of us did full justice’.  It proved a well-timed intervention.
No time for fear
By 2330, the barometer was ‘falling wildly’, the wind was up to Force 9 and Assent was down to triple-reefed main and staysail, according to the ship’s log. Williams was still stitching a rip in the spinnaker when the 0015 forecast warned of Force 10 storm. Two hours later, they had their first knockdown, but even this was dismissed with a joke.
‘It occurred so suddenly that we had no time to fear the consequences,’ Williams wrote, ‘and as the boat quickly righted, with Fiona and I still tied in our places and only a modest amount of water in the cockpit, we shouted to Alan that all appeared to be well and remarked that we could now reckon a knockdown among our sailing experiences.’
Even more remarkable, however, was what followed. After removing the damaged storm jib, Assent’s crew carried on regardless, not just coping with the conditions but, if the log book and Williams’s account are to be believed, positively revelling in them.
‘The sail that followed through the rest of the night after the knockdown was as fantastic and exhilarating as one could expect to encounter in a lifetime of sailing,’ wrote Williams. ‘A half moon had appeared in the clearing sky to light the wild seascape of foaming breakers.
Phosphorescence in the spray was streaming over the sail and cabin top, and the wind was screaming through the rigging and life lines like a pack of coyotes, while all the time the little ship continued steadily on her course to windward with a much easier motion following the loss of the jib.
After climbing up and up each successive sea (reported afterwards to have been 40ft high), we could not help whooping with excitement, and not a little relief, as she crested each summit and slithered down into the next trough.’
The only indication that Assent’s crew were sailing on the edge that night is a significant gap in the log, with no entries at all from 2330 until 1020, apart from a brief reference to the knockdown, which looks as if it was added later. With no anemometer, they didn’t know how strong the wind, and were ‘probably happier as a result’, according to Williams.
Assent wasn’t fitted with VHF radio either, so her crew had no idea of the carnage that was taking place around them. In was only the next morning, when they saw rescue helicopters ‘all about us’ and came across the dismasted yacht Sandettie II, that they began to get an inkling that all was not well.
Assent rounded the Fastnet Rock at 0945 the next morning, with her crew ‘rested and in high spirits’ and, as they headed back to Land’s End that afternoon, they enjoyed a large curry ‘and thought ourselves very well off indeed’.
The next morning, they were back down to triple reefed main and a staysail and that afternoon had their second knockdown, which, as the log book records wryly, ‘shifted the beer’.
Extracts from Assent‘s 1979 Fastnet Race log
First to finish
Assent blasted up the Channel back to Plymouth under spinnaker, averaging 8 knots, only to blow the spinnaker out 6 miles from the finish (‘Wot a way to go!’ says the log).
They crossed the finish line at 0142, and were astonished to discover they were not only first in Class V but were the only boat out of a fleet of 75 in the class to finish the race.
Assent’s outstanding performance – along with the rest of the Contessa 32 fleet, which all retired safely with no major damage – was one of the few positive stories to emerge from the 1979 Fastnet Race.
Assent‘s 1979 Fastnet crew were aged from 18 to 25
In the soul-searching that followed, her seaworthy design was used as the benchmark against which the modern IOR boats were compared and found wanting. Assent soon acquired cult status, and barely a report on the race failed to mention the plucky little racer/cruiser, which succeeded where much grander designs failed.
But the 1979 Fastnet Race was only the start of the Assent legend. After the race, Ker carried on racing, usually with Alan as crew, competing again in the double-handed Round Britain Race (1978 and 1985), three times in the Three Peaks Race, and once in the Transatlantic Race to Newport race (1986).
It was while taking part in the 1978 Round Britain that Willy got switched on to sailing in northern latitudes. After a major refit in 1981, he went back to cruise the Shetland Islands and thereafter followed a haphazard course that would lead ever further northwards.
He ended up circumnavigating Iceland in 1982, and over the next 30 years covered over 100,000 miles, sailing to Norway and Greenland (1986) and then south to the Falklands and Antarctica (1992), back north across the Pacific via Easter Island and Hawaii (1993) to Alaska, Siberia and back to Vancouver.
He then had Assent shipped across Canada on a low-loader, before sailing through the Great Lakes back into the Atlantic and continuing his pilgrimage to Greenland and Iceland. Most of his trips were made single-handed, occasionally accompanied by his wife Veronica or some crew he picked up along the way.
A rare crew joins Ker, who sailed mostly single-handed
Contrary to popular belief, Assent was not strengthened in any way for such extreme sailing and had just the standard Contessa lay up. Her fit-out was entirely functional and almost entirely bereft of creature comforts.
Ker fitted forward facing sonar, to detect icebergs, and an SSB radio fitted with a printer to print out Weatherfaxes. He fitted a 10hp single-cylinder Bukh diesel engine, which was easy to fix and could be hand-cranked, and a paraffin cooker and stove, on the basis that paraffin was available everywhere.
He also shipped three anchors and fitted an enormous windlass on her foredeck, with vast lengths of anchor chain stored in the fo’c’sle, to allow him to anchor the boat in deep water.
Willy Ker sailing Assent off Anvers Island on the Antarctic Peninsula
Ker refused to carry a liferaft, on the principle that if he got into trouble he would rather rescue himself than drift around waiting for help to come. Instead, he had an inflatable dinghy with a rig specially made, complete with a double skin to guard against possible attacks by leopard seals – the only thing he seems to have been afraid of.
He also refused to fill the boat’s tank with tap water, which he thought was “absolutely disgusting”, preferring to collect water straight from glacier streams.
His only concession to human frailty was a small doghouse over the main hatchway – apparently made from an aircraft canopy from an old fighter plane – under which he spent most of his time while at sea.
Ker’s nav station on Assent
Ker’s exploits didn’t pass without notice, and in 1983 he was invited to join the Royal Cruising Club (RCC), an extremely select organisation whose alumni include the likes of Bill Tilman, Miles and Beryl Smeeton and Francis Chichester.
His voyage to Greenland in 1987 – when Assent became the first yacht to sail into Grise Fjord, 850 miles from the North Pole – earned him the RCC’s Tilman Medal, and he was awarded the Cruising Club of America’s Blue Water medal.
Finally, in 2011, Ker made his last voyage on Assent on a trip to Greenland, still sailing single-handed, despite his 85 years. After suffering a heart attack during the trip, however, he was finally persuaded to hang up his sailing boots and return to the UK by plane.
His son Alan sailed the boat home, and put her on the market. Although Ker consented to the sale and was delighted when Kit and Jessie asked to buy her, it must have been like losing a limb for him.
Kit and Jessie Rogers, current custodians of Assent
Functional and unfussy
Back in Lymington, Kit is lighting the paraffin cooker to boil some water for tea. He has a love/hate relationship with the cooker, which is considerably older than the boat, and has been known to use a gas flamethrower to get it going. But wife Jessie was adamant it had to stay.
“It’s part of the story of the boat,” she says. “Willy had it for 40 years and lived on the boat in extreme conditions with only basic equipment. Now we’ve pimped her up with new gear, it felt a bit pathetic if we couldn’t even manage a paraffin stove!”
Since Kit and Jessie bought Assent, the yacht has indeed been extensively updated. She now has new sails (two sets: a Vectron suit for cruising and a carbon suit for racing), a new boom, self-tailing winches, and the running rigging now leads back to the cockpit.

The hull has been resprayed and, below decks, the fo’c’sle has been reinstated and the cushions reupholstered – though Ker’s sturdy, non-standard lee cloths remain. She now has VHF radio and a chartplotter instead of SSB and radar.
Yet, stepping on board Assent, she still feels supremely functional and unfussy, with her bare wood trim, her original mast complete with sturdy mast steps, and her unsprayed deck still bearing the battle wounds of her many voyages.
Far from being pimped up, it feels as if the spirit of her past had been respected. I suspect Ker would have approved of everything the Rogers have done.
Reupholstered, but the sturdy leecloths are the same as ’79. Photo: Nic Compton
“I still feel it’s not really our boat,” says Kit. “It’s still Willy’s boat, and we’re just interlopers. There was clearly a relationship between Willy and Assent that can never be replicated or repeated.
“But we are starting to have our own adventures on her – not on a level with Willy’s, but exciting enough for us. We came first out of 28 Contessa 32s in the Round the Island Race last year. And it’s cool that she’s going to do the Fastnet again.”
It’s tricky taking on a boat with such a massive history, but if anyone can give her a new future that respects her past, it’s the Rogers. As for the Fastnet Race, they’ll be just happy to get around the course and have some fun along the way, just as their predecessors did in 1979.
And if the going gets tough, they’ll have the comfort of knowing that Assent has been through it all before – and much, much more besides.
Assent finished the 2019 Fastnet Race in a time of 5 days, 14 hours, 51 minutes, 25 seconds – placing 30th out of 37 finishers in IRC 4B.

Tumblr media
It’s no secret, especially on this blog, how much I love Beetlejuice. However, there has been an unforgivable shortage of Beetlejuice merchandise on the mainstream market until fairly recently. Apparently, it has something to do with the movie’s 30th anniversary, even though that would have technically taken place sometime in March. But hell, I’m not complaining.
I’m a simple girl. I see black and white stripes in a store - I walk in. Consequently, I’ve been practically abusing my poor wallet who I believe is now intending to write a callout post on me in the foreseeable future. It’s gotten so bad that at the first opportunity I actually darted out of school to catch an unbearably lengthy bus ride to get to the mall so I can grab what appeared to be the last tiny Beetlejuice bag in the store. I did this because when I was binge-shopping online, the bag was already sold out. This gave me anxiety.
This gave me anxiety.
Yeah, it’s gotten that bad.
So I’m in Hot Topic, and a sales associate, who is basically radiating customer service, keeps insisting we’re friends and is helping me to spend more than I intended to. This is in no way a difficult feat, and frankly, she’s very good at her job.
I leave the store with my prize, my little Beetlejuice bag, as well as a small assortment of other unnecessary items, including a poor-quality makeup palette, pins for a project I will likely never start, and a patch inspired by Stephen King’s IT, because I am part of the cancer that is eating away at Tumblr.
Tumblr media
After this, I made my way out and back to the bus stop. As I’m sitting, clutching my treasures, a visibly homeless man sitting next to me points to the large building beside us and asks “is that the mall?”
I was a little confused by the question because the answer seemed obvious, so I said: “uh...yeah.” He thanked me and started heading in that direction.
As I watched him go, I saw that even with his walker, he could barely walk. He had to pause every few steps because each step took considerable effort. As I watched pitifully, not knowing what to do, I realized that the easily accessible mall entrance was closed for construction. Leaving him with two options: Go up a large and narrow stairway to get to the top of the parking lot, only to have to make a long trek around to get to an entrance, or go even further down to follow the road itself to get in. Not thinking of any better response, I rushed up to tell him.
I don’t know what I was expecting to accomplish. I half-expected he’d give up and take a seat that it seemed he so desperately needed, despite having been seated earlier. But no, he starts going up the stairs. First his walker, then him; dragging himself up step by step. And with every step, My heart broke.
Now maybe I’m an idiot, but I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t have the strength to help him up and I didn’t know if I should stop him. How could I help?? It wasn’t until he was halfway up that I realized I should have called an Uber or something to get him to the entrance. By that point, I was afraid of making him come back down. So I watched fearfully as he continued. Slowly making his way to the top.
Once he had done so, I waged an internal war as to what to do now. I was afraid of running up to him again and seeming creepy like I was following him or something. The last thing I wanted to do was add to his discomfort. So I went up the stairs and tried to casually walk by. As I was doing so I said “Sir...I’m about to call an Uber to get home. Do you want a ride to the front of the mall? Is there somewhere you need to be?”
He replied: “Oh...I just really need shoes. These ones are really worn down and my feet are getting worn down.” I looked down at his black, plastic slippers which were falling apart, and what looked like hospital socks caked in layers of dirt, which were also in decay. I don’t know what his plan was. Perhaps he was going to beg for shoes. Either way, I couldn’t let that happen. I guided him to a side entrance to the mall and go with him inside, offering to buy him shoes and socks, just like he wanted. He was so grateful. He said I was a blessing in disguise.
It was then I realized I didn’t have any money left.
Tumblr media
I guided him to a seating area and asked him to wait just a few minutes while I went to get some money. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. I was trying to figure out how long it would take to get an Uber all the way back home so I can get my card and take it all the way back to the mall. I didn’t want to keep him waiting.
Randy, as I learned was his name, was very forgetful. He spoke very slowly and seemed to struggle at times to think of words. He also forgot things that were said in short-term, resulting in him asking the same questions sometimes. This didn’t bother me. He spoke like a man who had likely experienced a stroke in his lifetime. However, I was afraid he was going to forget that I was coming back and he was going to wander off if I took too long.
After a couple minutes of panicking, I resolved to use my phone to withdraw money from a nearby ATM. Thanks to a foot injury, though, I needed a ride to get there. During this time, my battery was at 1%, and I don’t think I’ve ever felt more stressed withdrawing money in my life.
Which is saying something because I’m a college student.
When I got back, money in bra (as per usual), Randy was thankfully just sitting there. He said he had never been in a mall before, and it was really nice. We went into a nearby shoe store and with some help from the associates found a nice pair of shoes that fit him and a pack of new socks.
He was so happy, as was I. As we left the shoe store he said he wanted to get to know me. Though I knew he would likely not remember any of the things I told him, I decided to tell him a little bit about what I was studying. Then I asked about him. He said that his last name used to be different, but he changed it to his mother’s last name. He confessed to me some of the mistakes he had made in his life, which, out of respect for him I won’t write, but now all he wanted was peace.
I asked if he was hungry and he admitted he was, so we went to the Food Court. I got him whatever he wanted.
I’m saying all of this not to get praise or be told “good for you for being kind to a homeless guy!”
No, I don’t care about that. I don’t need to be commended for acting decently. I don’t need a pat on the back for goodwill. That should be the bare minimum we all strive for. It doesn’t have to be buying shoes or socks, but it should be a basic amount of kindness that we are all willing to extend to one another. I don’t see myself as a special or saintly just because I helped Randy out once. I just wanted to share this eye-opening experience with you. Because I had never been so acutely aware of how privileged I was. I had been so anxious over a Beetlejuice bag.
A Beetlejuice bag.
And Randy just wanted - and desperately needed - a pair of shoes.
The juxtaposition was not only eye-opening but alarming.
As we parted ways, I regretfully told him I couldn’t join him to eat because I had a lot of work to do back at school. This was true. But I gave him some bus money. Now, I’m not naïve. Whatever he decides to do with that money is his business, I’m not here to pass any form of judgment. I just hope he ends up alright.
The funny thing is, he asked me how he could repay me. Of course, I said not to worry about it, that I didn’t need anything in return. But the truth is, he already did. I’m really grateful for his company and the opportunity to get to know him.
I can’t guarantee that I won’t stress over something stupid or frivolous ever again. But I do know this - I am no longer taking any of it for granted. Despite all of my struggles, I know I am so lucky to have all of the things that I do, including the roof over my head. And if I have enough left over to buy merchandise for my favorite corpse, then the least I can do is spend my money on something that will actually help someone.
Randy, I’ll keep my promise.
If you are like me in any way - firstly, I’m so sorry. Second, if you want to help those in need, in addition to buying the occasional art commission that floats around on here, I recommend donating to help the homeless. Here are a few organizations to look at which are inclusive of people within the LGBTQA+ community.
Let’s do better together. But I won’t depend my actions on anyone else or project my decisions either. I’m holding myself accountable too. Because I made a promise.
In a country like the USA with so much privilege and opportunity there is an increasing wealth gap which is resulting in an unacceptable dichotomy of classes. Homelessness is a major issue. As someone who’s family emigrated to the US to escape poverty and hunger, who saw the US as the Land of Opportunity, it breaks my heart when we let those who believe in that dream down. Everyone deserves a chance to live, not just survive.

My friend put my car under his name and he insured it for me, I've been paying him every single month, but I don't think he's been putting ANY money towards insurance and I think he's been spending it on himself.    He signed the ownership so if I ever want to switch the name to someone else's I can BUT how do I find out if he's been paying insurance or not because he obviously won't tell me the truth and I don't want to be driving around with no insurance if it is cancelled!!!   What do I do?

A question about car insurance?

Do I have to change my legal home address to North Dakota and get a North Dakota address, or can I keep my Minnesota address and license? How can I lower my auto insurance?
I am 20 years old. I live in Florida which is by far the WORST states to have auto insurance. I've only been in 2 accidents, both not my fault. Car insurance denied claim because they cannot contact its insured.?
Hi. On April first, my neighbor hit my dad's car in our neighborhood. Our garages are facing each other, and my dad was going backwards to get out of our garage. He was already in the street and he was ready to go in his way. Suddenly, our neighbor back out from her garage very fast and hit the driver door of my car. She didn't stay in that position, she moved and my dad did the same. The white bumper of her van had no visible damages, but my door needs to be replaced. Also, there is white paint in car in the place she hit it. We asked for her insurance, but she didn't have it in that moment. We wrote the plate number and took some quick pictures. I called my insurance to report the accident. In the night, when she returned home, we asked for her insurance, but she refused. We called the police and she agreed to give us her insurance information. In fact, she wrote the information herself. I called her insurance(Geico) the next day, and she had already made a claim, and she only said she didn't hit my car; she didn't give more details. My dad gave his version of the accident with a lot of details, but she didn't do it. Her Insurance tried to contact her, but there is no answer from her. I see her everyday, so I am sure is not responding on purpose. Now, her insurance called me and told me that because she is not responding, there is no way to confirm she was involved in the accident. therefore, they denied liability. I was shocked because they took that decision only because they cannot contact her. They didn't came to take pictures of the place or the cars. So, I tell them I was going to send the pictures I took. I did send the pictures but now, the adjuster is not in his office, and he will be back next week on Thursday. A few questions about SR-22 Insurance?
Alright, so I'm getting slightly annoyed of the DMV as I've visited them three times already an had literally no progress made in all those lame visits... Anyways, I only got insurance so I can drive, but my car has failed smog three times now so that wont be happening and I'm now paying non-owner SR-22 insurance. Here are a few questions I have about the SR-22 and any input would be much appreciated. 1) What are the exact consequences if I choose to cancell my non-owner SR-22 insurance? I acknowledge that I will have to restart the process all over again when I want to reactivate it, but will the price be raised even more and the time frame? 2) Who do I call to find out how long I have to have SR-22 insurance; DMV or Local Court? 3) When does the SR-22 officially get activated, when the judge orders it or when I first started paying for the insurance? (I'm asking this because the insurance company I'm with is saying I shouldn't cancel because it will restart; I got the DUI 2 years ago and acitvated the insurance about 2 mounts ago.) I'm planning on going to a 4 year college so I don't want to be paying not to drive...! *I live in California if that helps you answer the question.""
Why should I have to pay for your health insurance?
An answerer on another question said, Do you have insurance? What of those who cannot afford it (my sister comes to mind, and she has a husband and two sons under age 18 years who are also not covered)? Medical care is extremely expensive and necessary. I'd much rather my tax dollars go toward a means of making insurance affordable to everyone than to fund an immoral war. Oh, and my sister and her husband have always worked very hard. Neither are fat, lazy bums who sit around all the time. Heck, my sister would love to have 10 minutes to herself, but can't take the time. * 20 minutes ago These people made a choice to have two children they cannot afford to insure. They had a responsibility to seek employment where they would have health insurance coverage for themselves and their two children. Or obtain insurance on their own. If they are healthy, it can be gotten at a rate comparable to what I pay through my work. I work two jobs. Both of my jobs, even the part-time job, offer me health insurance, so jobs with health benefits are not so hard to find. Why should I be made to pay for other people's poor choices? I have wants and needs, too, and it's MY money.""

I am not a UK Resident , I am here in the UK from Australia for 5 months on Holidays . This is my forth trip here and after the first time when I hired a car for 7 weeks at a cost of 1400.00 pounds i found out that it would be much better to buy a car as I was going to be here for 5 months. A few days ago i took my rent-a-car back the i had for 7 days and cost me 150.00 pounds , I found a car to buy at a cost of 1200.00 pounds but first went looking to find someone to Insure the car . I spent overs 2 hrs on the phone and there was on one that would do it for me apart from one . I have 3rd party insurance only for this car and at a cost of 1230.00 pounds for 12 months . About how much does auto insurance cost per month for someone who's 30 years old & drives a small basic car?

Insurance Fraud?
I'm a 17 year old male living in Canada, and I just bought a car. Would it be insurance fraud to insure that car in my moms name, with her as the main driver and me as a casual driver, while she insures her own car with a seperate insurance company, not telling either company she technically owns 2 vehicles? Becuase she just wouldn't drive my car, and my car would be under her name but I would be listed as a casual driver and have much lower rates. If she insured her own car with another company and told them she only owns one car, I could have much lower insurance rates because I would be listed as a casual driver when really I'm the main driver. Is that insurance fraud? Is it legal? I've heard of people doing that...""

Has anyone else sought to find out how much health care insurance is for an 18 year old?
I did an on line search. Using a male 18 nonsmoker, working non-student living in New Jersey. I got back 21 policies prices starting at $169 per month. I compared that to an unlimited minutes calling plan with messaging from Verizon and that is $149 per month. I did a third for car insurance on a financed 2006 Toyota Corolla and that started at $700 per month. It does not look to me like there is a health insurance crisis for young people, but rather a car insurance crisis for young people. Why scrap the current health care insurance system that can deliver an EPO plan with $30 office deductible for pretty much the same price as a common cell phone plan? Esurance used to search.""

Argument with car insurance company any advice?
recently suffered total loss due to fire of my car and claimed on my insurance policy they came and valued the car after the accident and then took 300 quid off for policy excess however it clearly states in their policy that they cover permanently fitted radio/audio equipment to max of 500 euro , fair enough so i submitted my claim to cover the radio which was destroyed with the car as a result of fire , cost of cd/radio was 149.00 in argos but company now say that their definition of permanently fitted radio is one that has been fitted in the factory when car was made but my car is secondhand and had a sony cd/radio fitted when i bought the car . Now they say this is not covered as is not classed as permanently fitted , to me a permanently fitted radio is one that you cannot take out of the car unless you are replacing it , some cd/mp3 players are easily removed for security and can be taken from the car each evening but this is not the case with mine Anyone else out there been taken for a ride by their insurance company , was thinking of legal action as they should have specified factory fitted radio in their advertising instead of permanently fitted Had arguement with them for 30 mins but they kept saying that the radio/audio had to be factory fitted from new""

Why do insurance companies hate performance/modified cars?
It seems like the ideal insurance company wants you to drive a safe and slow bumper car and have absolutely no fun driving to and from wherever you are going. They assume that any sports car or car with performance enhancements means you will crash. It means you are a reckless driver and no good to the general public. It means you will blatantly violate the rules of the road and have no remorse for doing it. All of that is a load of crap... Most of the major car companies don't even offer, when getting a free quote, to see Ferrari's or Lamborghinis prices, they just won't insure them! Your expected to report any and all modifications to the company so they can jack up the premium. So why do they hate those types of cars so much?""

Honda CBR 125r... Insurance price for a 17 year old?
(UK!) I'm really interested in motorbikes, and in 18 months - the painful wait - I am looking at buying my first bike, a Honda CBR 125r. Due to the low horse power of the bike, I can ride it with just a CBT after my 17th birthday if I'm not mistaken, which will reduce my costs as I won't need to take lessons and a test. With leathers, helmet, boots, gloves, CBT, as well as the bike, I worked out I would need to save at least 2200... However, I have no idea what insurance would be. I understand insurance prices fluctuate according to location etc, but I have no idea at all. So even a completely rough estimate, even if it could be out by 150 would be useful. Why do people keep comparing health insurance mandates to car insurance mandates?
Car insurance mandates are done at the STATE level, in accordance with the Tenth Amendment of the U.S. constitution. Yet people (the president included) continue to claim that a FEDERAL mandate to buy insurance is no different than being required to cover your car. (Completely ignoring that you have to BUY a car before you must get insurance...the govt's basically saying they own your body...insure it or be taxed) So isn't a FEDERAL mandate unconstitutional unless you plan on writing an amendment to the Constitution so that such a mandate is in accordance with the Tenth Amendment?? http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/27384.html The questions from ABCs George Stephanopoulos highlighted a politically dangerous new aspect of the health reform debate for Obama  as critics from Republican leaders to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce say his reform proposals amount to a middle-class tax increase. Obama promised during the campaign that Americans earning less than $250,000 a year would not see any tax increases from an Obama administration. Obama strongly denied that the mandate amounts to a tax increase  saying it was no different than requiring people to have auto insurance and charging a penalty if they dont. He also said it was important for everyone to have insurance so that people who do carry insurance dont have to shoulder the load for people who dont. The excise tax is designed as an enforcement mechanism to ensure people will carry insurance.""
