Joker Out, Paris (Café de la danse) 22.3.2024

I arrived at the venue around 14ish, and was third to last in the EE queue. However queueing is part of the party! I exchanged sooo many bracelets and met amazing people, some of which I just met that day, some I knew from Discord or tumblr or earlier gigs, couldn't have been happier. Met someone in the queue who had hawk's eyes and who encouraged me to go and ask for a selfie with Jan, and later on she spotted Bojan on the street 100 m before everyone else did. Kris left the stage as soon as the last notes of Gola were over, other boys stayed jamming in accelerating speed for couple of more minutes. I showed them my UM sign that only read "I want to sing UMAZAN" at that point. :')

20h02 was ok, didn't connect with their music at all though. JC Stewart seemed a bit sick, but sounded good nevertheless. Finished my sign.

They started with Katrina and Bele Sanje, and people were singing even guitar riffs along. Dopamin hit like dopamine followed by Ne bi smel, Nace was staring at me several times during those songs.

People were already singing along to Sta bih ja, and Bojan was sooo happy (and sweaty. We were all very sweaty, the concert hall was ridiculously warm.). Kris disappeared for a moment in the beginning of Sta bih ja, and Bojan looked like a lost puppy (wait, where is kris?? about 5-10 seconds into sta bih ja). Bojan said Kris didn't like how Jan played the riff and that's why he left the stage :P. Jan flipped a bird to him.

Decibels raised by about 20 when they played Ona and Demoni. Turns out they might be the easiest to sing along for absolutely everyone, not just for people who speak Finnish. Bojan looked me directly into eyes during second verse of Demoni for several seconds, and I felt so seen (in a good way). EE was definitely worth its price.

In Helsinki I felt like the setlist was over before it even started, but in Paris it felt more like we were really dancing and playing until the stars fade. I think it had something to do with how much they interacted with each other and with the public during each song. In Helsinki they seemed like they had forgotten how to be on stage, and there was just TOO MUCH SPACE, whereas Paris had Nordic Tour energy.

They all moved a LOT on stage!! Kris was on jance side several times! Nace had a mating dance thingy going on with Kris at least twice, Jan once. Jan interacted with the public on Kris's side a few times. Bojan almost run into Kris at one point - no wonder he caressed Kris's arm to let him know he's there before grapping his hips?? and dancing behind him??? during Behind those eyes. Everybody's waiting and soooooo many people raised hands when Bojan asked in his spiel before the song if anyone here suffers from panic or anxiety attacks, and I think it made everyone feel less alone. He sang I'm the problem it's me -line to make things a bit lighter before proceeding to the song.

We got Omamljeno Telo and I felt SOOOO HAPPY (but also sad for Moonu) but also SOOOO HAPPY it was on the setlist, I think I screamed VITTU JES on top of my lungs (manifesting it for Ruisrock huh). Famous water spray on Jan during OT, and it shows I've grown old, because instead of "yeeeess I want Bojan's spit on me" I went "rat disease, why am I not wearing a mask".

Everyone sang along during CD, not in French though even if there was a fanproject French translation published a whole 28 hours before(....). Plastika hit like a hammer once again, but I think I was already waiting and stressing for UM, so I didn't mosh for example. Which, good idea, because my neck was soooo sore after Helsinki.

Bojan announced the karaoke song, and asked which versions we have today. He saw my sign, asked "Slovenian version?", to which I "said" (from 4th row on Jan+Nace side) Finnish version, and he heard it and corrected himself and said perfect. I was not afraid at all even if I knew I'm probs going to sing in front of about 500 people in 5ish minutes???? How??? I'm usually a ball of anxiety but here I was just proud and excited to sing my version of it.

I loved the Bretogne/French version (I've still no idea what were the words, but it rhymed super well and she sang well, but that was def NOT paris region French), cringed at some of the "translations" because they did not fit the lines and did not rhyme, sang along to Slovenian versions in Finnish, felt bad for one of them as the karaoke singer started at the wrong moment and Bojan spent most of their special moment trying to orchestrate the band.

When Bojan approached with "I think we still have a Slovenian version, OH NO, A FINNISH VERSION" I chortled, and felt the last bits of nervousness disappear. (Cue "some boat, titanic, oh no".) I had my ACTUALLY finger pointing moment, which, on point with my personality, telling him it's a hybrid version. I don't know what he meant with SUOMI SAA, but it was NOT full-on Suomi SAATANA, that much is certain. I quite like the idea/interpretation he was making a pun with SAA(tan)Are you ready? But who knows. Sad about missed chance to answer "ArE YoU???" now that I think about it, but at least I wasn't the only one who failed the moment :') . Speaking of cursewords though, a histronic youngster next to me did shout vittu though! I loved my spot but she was super annoying throughout the evening.

The Finnish version is in the beginning of this one, and the Arabic version right after Finnish version is AMAZING. The French version is on the first part, as well as Bojan going "uuu Finnish version? perfect".

Started in Slovene, which made him have a Ok?? face, but when I switched to my own Finnish version that rhymes with the Slovene version, he raised his brows and seemed so impressed that I just nodded to him, sending telepath(et)ic messages that yes, our languages match and rhyme, about time you collaborate with Jere. I think he remembered I asked for a hug in the afternoon, because he did not hug everyone during karaoke. Afternoon hug was better btw.

Jure exchanged his drumstick to a breadstick. I laughed because a) it was a clever pun and b) such a stereotypically French thing to bring a BAGUETTE wrapped in a napkin to a concert. Also no wonder boys are always sick, I don't even want to know how many people touched that bread before it was on stage.

Because of his bloodline and his parents’ friends, Jeongin had only wizard friends during his childhood. Once at Hogwarts, however, they were all sorted into different houses and he ended up alone in Gryffindor. It wasn’t a problem for him and they still spent time together at first. But his friends spent more and more time with their housemates until one day, they finally didn’t have time for each other anymore. By that time, he found someone else too though. He met one of his prefects, Chan, who took him under his wings during the first month he arrived.

Jeongin already knew a lot about Hogwarts and the courses, he knew what facultative courses he would take the second he would have the chance but since his parents didn’t like the Frog Choir, they never talked about it. Therefore, when he first saw the students on his very first day, singing all together with frogs, he was amazed. Will his toad ever croak as beautifully? Cause yeah, he believed his toad had to be part of it to be able to join the Frog Choir and he never dared to ask Chan about it.

He tried for many months to harmonize with Froakie, but all he did was ignoring his owner or after a while, croaking so violently it was like he was telling him to shut up. He realized that, maybe, the problem didn’t come from his toad but from him. And so he exercised his voice to make it sound more pleasant to hear perhaps. He would know if it was enough when his toad would accept to harmonize with him, he figured. Jeongin practised for almost 2 years and during summer before his 3rd year, he was seated in the garden of his house with his toad, enjoying the sun. He mindlessly sang one of his favorite songs and to his surprise, Froakie croaked in rhythm with him. It became one of his happiest moments.

The second day of his 3rd year, he asked his charms teacher if he could pass the audition to join the Frog Choir. He easily passed it and was excited to start. When he found Chan revising in their common room, he directly told him.

“Chan! You’ll never know what I just did.”

The older one lifted his head up from the potions book he was reading with a smile. “Let me guess. You just had your first muggle studies lesson of the year and it’s fascinating?”

He never really knew about the muggle world so he meant to take it since his first year and he knew it would rapidly become one of his favorite classes.

“Well yeah, I did, but that’s not it.”

“What could you be more excited about if not that?” Chan was really curious now while Jeongin nervously played with the hem of his sleeve.

“The Frog Choir.”

Chan was confused because Jeongin never mentioned it before. “What about it?”

“I auditioned and got in.”

Chan’s face lit up. He was genuinely pleased to hear that his friend got to enjoy singing. “No way! I’m so happy for you Jeongin. You know who’s apart of it?”

Jeongin’s eyes widened a bit. “… No?”

Mark, a fellow Gryffindor and Quidditch player that was passing by, took part in the conversation. “There’s my 2nd year friend Chenle, his best friend and Yunho from my year.”

Oh, Chenle’s best friend. You.

“Yeah and Jaehyun too. Thanks, Mark.”

The boy smiled and left the common room. Jeongin grew nervous. As if reading his mind, Chan tried to make him feel better.

“Everything’s going to be okay, I promise!” He wished it would.

The next day, when he entered the Great Hall filled with older and younger students chatting, seated on the benches or up on the platform, all excited to be in the choir this year as well, he felt great.

You saw him approach the platform hesitantly, he didn’t seem to be friends with anyone in particular.

“Oh, isn’t that Jeongin from Gryffindor?” asked Chenle next to you. You smiled unconsciously.

“Yeah, we should go talk to him.”

“You’re right, he looks kinda lost,” Chenle smiled.

You got up from one of the benches and joined him.

“Hey,” you greeted as you tapped his shoulder, “what are you doing here?”

“I—” he coughed but quickly regained composure. “I passed the audition to be part of the Frog Choir.”

“Oh, that’s amazing!” you exclaimed, maybe a bit too enthusiastically, and Chenle looked apologetic for your behavior. When you realized, you nudged him and smiled innocently at Jeongin, who couldn’t stop his cheeks from heating up. 

The professor, who was also the charms and music professor, entered the Great Hall and all the whispers faded away. You turned to watch him get closer.

“Hello dear students. Welcome to the new ones and welcome back to the old ones.” A loud cheer followed his words and Jeongin felt like he knew he would enjoy this class.

He eventually had to present himself, like everyone else and when he did, he spoke in a small voice, showing Froakie, snuggled in his small hands. Everyone had sympathetic smiles and he heard two or three older people saying he was cute. You found him really cute too, but you kept it to yourself.

When you had to present yourself, you were at ease, knowing almost everyone already. “I’m Y/N, third year in the choir, and I got Yggorf with me, like always.”

The professor explained what he explained every year, to teach the rules to the new ones and remind them to those who were there the years before. While he talked, you were humming discreetly and mindlessly. Jeongin wasn’t far from you and it made him happy and relaxed to hear your voice, he found it soothing.

“Hey, can I ask you where Yggorf comes from?” he whispered as he got closer to you.

“Just Froggy backwards. I know, I put so much thought on this,” you laughed quietly.

Jeongin suddenly remembered the first time he saw you, the night all of the first year students were sorted, his first night ever in the castle. When you got called by a tall and intimidating professor to sit on the chair in front of everyone, you were a bit anxious. You were just eleven and you didn’t really know who you were exactly yet nor in which house you would be put. The professor put the Sorting Hat on your head and it took its time but finally, shouted “Slytherin!”. You smiled and joined your housemates. Jeongin, already seated at the Gryffindor table, gently clapped his hands until an older Gryffindor glared at him. He realized the only ones who clapped were the same house students but couldn’t comprehend why he couldn’t be happy for every new student. And so, he kept clapping quietly for everyone else (and kept doing that every year).

You quickly found a friend, though. Chenle was a bit weird but adorable. You went to see him in your common room after your first day because you thought he was funny in class and he offered you to play gobstones with him. Since, you play together at least four times a week.

Jeongin and Froakie enjoyed every practice, Jeongin because he could spend time with his new friends and Froakie because he was hanging with other toads and frogs. You suspected Froakie and your own toad, Yggorf, to be friends as well cause they were almost glued to each other every chance they got.

Jeongin realized Chenle didn’t bring any toads to practice though.

“Hey Chenle, you don’t have a frog?”

“No, I have a rat.”

“Oh, but you’re in the frog choir anyway?” Jeongin’s face screamed confusion.

“Yeah of course, don’t tell me you thought you absolutely needed a frog to join— oh. Is that why you only joined this year?” Jeongin nodded. “Oh.”

“It’s alright, at least Froakie made me work on myself so I don’t regret it.” Maybe, just maybe, if he didn’t work on himself, tried out for the Frog Choir in his first year and didn’t get in, he wouldn’t have tried again and this moment wouldn’t exist.

“I’m glad to hear that, because you have quite the skill.”

“Thanks, you ain’t bad yourself.”

Chenle thanked Jeongin and both smiled at each other before going back to practice.

Jeongin and you had classes together, like care of magical creatures. He was really passionate about it and cared about them a lot. He took the subject so seriously that he knew almost everything there was to know about every creature you learned about. It made him the best in this class and you admired him for that.

Jeongin often talked to you about muggle studies. You didn’t take that course because you were a halfblood and already knew everything you needed to know. Every time Jeongin had a question, he went to you in the halls or after classes to know the answer, not able to wait for the next muggle studies class to ask the professor herself or even ask Chan, a muggleborn. Chenle kept telling you it was because he wouldn’t miss a chance to spend time with you.

Since you started talking, you spent time with each other every chance you got, practice, shared classes, after class, weekends… Jeongin had now found friends he was never going to let go of. You were happy to spend time with him, he was really cute and charming.

“I—” Jeongin gulped. “I don’t know. I could. Or not. I mean, they’re cute. And smart. Passionate too. Also—”

“So, no feelings, huh?” Chenle laughed at his friend’s rambling and gave him a tap on the shoulder.

You joined them soon after and found Jeongin acting weirdly. You didn’t question it, he was definitely adorable.

Obviously, Jeongin wasn’t indifferent to your charm, he liked you since your first year but never dared to talk to you. Still, he needed to understand his feelings better, to at least know if it was friendship or love. He needed to talk about it with Chan. Jeongin went to the Gryffindor common room to find him and he was alone on the couch.

“Chan, I need you.”

“Why that serious tone?”

“It’s about Y/N.”

“Chenle’s best friend? What about them?”

Jeongin sat next to his older friend on the comfortable couch. “They’re more than that, Chan. How do you know you like someone?”

Chan smiled fondly at the thought of his lover. They had been together for around two months now. “Well, you always want to spend time with the person. You’re happy just to see them smile, you look up to them and are whipped for them. Like you could do anything for them in a heartbeat. These kinds of things.”

“I guess I really like them, then.” He looked down, lost in thought —of you, naturally.

“Cool! When are you going to tell them?”

“Wait, I need to know if they feel the same way now,” Jeongin put a hand up, pouting lightly.

Chan smiled. “What if they end up asking you first?”

“I would be relieved, not going to lie. Because it would mean they like me too, and I wouldn’t have to worry about saying the right things,” he explained.

“Our Jeonginnie’s in love~” Chan chanted excitedly.

“Stop!” Jeongin whined.

“Chenle!” you called your friend who was doing his history homework on an armchair in the common room.

“Yes, Y/N??”

“Did Jeongin ever talk to you about me?”

He put down his quill and glared you in the eye as you sat next to him, looking at him questionably. “Did you finally understand you have feelings for him?”

You recoiled in your seat. “What? No—”

“Don’t lie to me Y/N, I’m your best friend.”

“Why would you ask a question you already know the answer of, then?” you pouted.

“To see if you’re ready for that talk.”

You sighed. “I hate you.”

“No you don’t,” he winked, then wrote one last sentence to his parchment before tidying up his stuff. “So. I talked to him about you and let me tell you that boy is WHIPPED. Can’t blame him, you’re cute.”

“Thanks… wait, he likes me too??”

Ignoring you, he went on with his plan. “Now, the question is… will you ask him out?”

“Wait, am I ready for that? I’m only thirteen!”

“True, but we’re not talking about marriage nor kids yet… just a romantic relationship with kisses and hugs.”

“You seem to have thought about all this a lot…”

“I’ve waited for this talk for months now,” he sighed tiredly.

“Shouldn’t we ask Changbin about love? No offense, but he might know more about the subject.”

“Of course, go ask him. He’s by the fireplace.” You turned around and saw Changbin on the couch, seemingly revising a charms spell. You walked up to him.

“Hey Changbin, can I ask you a question?”

He looked up at you with a smile. “Hey, isn’t that my favorite Slytherin? Green really looks good on you, Y/N.” You giggled, Changbin was really nice to the younger students but you knew it was a Changbin trait, not a prefect one.

“You said I was your favorite Slytherin yesterday!” shouted Chenle, pouting. Changbin laughed while you pulled your tongue out in his direction.

“Sit, tell me everything,” he said as he patted the place next to him.

“Well, it’s a matter of love.”

“Oh, love. Aren’t you a bit young to be thinking about that?”

“Maybe, but I just needed your advice. I like Jeongin, and I don’t really know how to tell him.” Actually, he just heard from Minho, who heard it from Jisung, who heard it from Chan that Jeongin liked you.

“Jeongin, you say? He’s one of my friends. My little finger told me he likes you too, you can go and ask him. As for how, why not propose him to go at Madam Puddifoot's tea shop? It's perfect for dates.”

“Thank you so much Changbin, you’re the best!” You hugged him tight and returned to your best friend, a big smile on your face.

“Should I remind you that you told me I was the best this very morning?”

“You’re both the best for different reasons. Like, you’re my best friend and he’s my best prefect.”

“I’ll let it pass,” he said, not without rolling his eyes.

After charms class, you stopped Jeongin to ask him something while Chenle left in a hurry.

“Would you, maybe, come with me at Madam Pudifoot’s tea shop tomorrow at 4:30pm?”

Jeongin went silent for a few seconds, processing what he had just heard. It sounded like you were asking him on a date, because the tea shop was known for couple dates. He was confused but his face lit up and he agreed vividly. 

“Cool, it’s a date. I have to go to Hogsmeade now but I’ll see you later,” you explained and got out of class, Jeongin behind you. A date? His stomach was doing things he didn’t think were possible.

“Want me to come with you?”

“No! I mean, no need, I’m going with Chenle already. Why don’t you practice the banishing charm we just learned?”

“I—” But you were already out of sight, finding Chenle and going to Hogsmeade together. You didn’t mean to be rude, you just couldn’t take him with you for this.

“I did it. He said yes.” Your smile said it all about how you were feeling and Chenle was pondering what reaction was best, smile or laugh.

“You’re brave, I’m proud of you. As expected, he likes you very much.” Your cheeks burned and you didn’t talk until you were at Hogsmeade.

“I’ll get him cauldron cakes, he said he liked those a few weeks ago,” Chenle said before entering Honeydukes.

“Right. I’ll see what I can find in Gladrags Wizardwear.” You entered the shop as well, searching for accessories. Pretty matching bracelets were disposed of on a shelf and you immediately felt like they were the one. Paying 6 galleons, you asked the owner to wrap one of the bracelets in a lovely gift wrap.

When you found Chenle outside of Honeydukes, he chuckled at the bracelet on your wrist. “You really know how to win a boy’s heart.”

“What’s that supposed to mean??” You looked offended but he just giggled.

Meanwhile, Jeongin went to see Hyunjin for advice. He found him on the pitch and watched the Gryffindor Quidditch team practice.

“Hyunjin!” he called as the older one came out of the changing room.

“Jeongin, hey.”

“Y/N just asked me! On a date!” He excitedly jumped around.

“Oh my god, that’s amazing!” he high fived his friend. “When is it planned?”

“Tomorrow.”

The older raised an eyebrow. “But that’s your birthday?”

“I haven’t told them that… By the way, right after that, they said they had to go to Hogsmeade with Chenle and insisted I don’t tag along,” he pouted, looking down.

“Jeongin, don’t you think that, perhaps, they also need time to prepare?”

“Right, of course. Can you help me with that?”

“Get ready, I won’t repeat myself,” he said with a smile, throwing his arm on Jeongin's shoulders, walking together to the school.

The big day had arrived, you were waiting at a table next to the window, playing with your new bracelet. Jeongin entered the shop, spotted you and sat in front of you. Madam Puddifoot came taking the order and left just as fast. It was awkward at first, neither of you being totally comfortable with the date thing. Jeongin decided to act as usual, not wanting to be weird and following his older friend’s advice diligently.

It soon was as if you did this your whole life. You chatted like you always did.

Your tea was almost completely drunk. You took the gift you bought the day before out of your pocket and put it on the table, next to Jeongin’s cup of tea.

“What is this?” he asked, surprised.

“Your gift. Happy birthday,” you smiled contently.

He was delighted you would ask him on a date the day of his birthday but receiving a gift from you? He was nearly overwhelmed by happiness. “How did you know?” he enquired while opening it.

You shrugged. “I asked Changbin.”

“Woah, it’s really beautiful!” Jeongin’s eyes were sparkling, examining the bracelet. “So pretty. Thank you so much, Y/N.”

“My pleasure. Let me put it on your wrist.” As you did, his eyes fell on your own wrist and his eyes broadened.

“Did you get us matching bracelets?” You acquiesced shyly. “This is the best gift I’ve ever received.”

He took your hands in his and you stayed like that for a few minutes, until someone from another table sneezed.

“Regarding us, what I know is that I really like you. I want to hold hands with you, hug you whenever you need and be there for you. If you’re okay with that, then would you be my boyfriend?”

“I’d be the happiest, Y/N. Just spending time with you makes me so happy.”

You kept the heart eyes for each other and the rest of the date went smoothly.

The moment you set foot on the entrance hall, Chenle ran to you and started screaming when he saw your intertwined fingers.

He clapped his hands and congratulated you both. He then wished a happy birthday to Jeongin and gave him his gift.

“Oh Chenle, thank you so much! I adore those.”

Chenle winked at you and smiled brightly.

“Hey Chan, I just saw Jeongin and Y/N passing by, wearing each other’s ties. Isn’t that cute?”

“It really is. I would have loved to try it too but my significant other is also a Gryffindor,” he shrugged, smiling.

“That’s right. My best friend is also a Slytherin, so we can’t do it either,” Changbin sighed.

“You still didn’t make your move?”

“They like someone else…”

“Oh, it sucks. Stay strong, my friend.”

“You’re really good at pep talk,” Changbin said sarcastically. “I can’t believe your house is in first position —for now— for the Quidditch cup.”

“Watch us win it,” he smugly said with a wink.

"KANE! KANEKANE!" (name) yelled out excitedly, catching the attention of two specific men in particular as Inupi stared at him shocked "can you point to him and say "inupi?"" She asked sweetly and (name) did just that, the boy had never even heard of the scarred man.

"(Name)? Did you just say Akane?" Koko said softly, crouching down and removing his mask and sunglasses and staring the boy down with almost hope.

"Hajime?" Inupi said shocked at the sight of his best friend and almost lover, the two having not seen each other in well over a decade at this point.

"Upi! Kane! Upi! Kane!" (Name) said happily and Koko pulled out his phone and pulled out a picture "whose this?"

"Kane! Kane say no sad!"

The Bonten men were shocked, it was one thing with before...but (name) had no way of learning about Akane...

It was pretty crazy.

"You're such a good boy (name)!" Akane said sweetly and (name) beemed at seemingly nothing, playing with the ghost as the two men were stuck with awkward greetings as the rest of Bonten looked at each other with wide eyes.

Ari's K-Pop Roundup: March 2024 (ILLIT, ARTMS, CHUNGHA, VCHA + MORE)

Magnetic - ILLIT (SUPER REAL ME)

Whether you watched HYBE's 2023 idol survival show 'R U Next?' or you had the self preservation to skip it, if you were into k-pop at that time, you definitely heard about it. The show gained attention from the community originally because it was from HYBE, the newest, and arguably currently the most influential k-pop company goliath, and because HYBE's girl groups (notably Le Sserafim and NewJeans) are famous for influencing the kpop scene instantly upon debut, and maintaining their spots in the top 10s of the charts for many months. This was HYBE giving us a look behind the curtain at the making of the next big girl group, and letting us call a lot of the shots along the way. Or at least that's what it was supposed to be. Rigging in these type of idol shows is practically expected, but HYBE was a new offender, and their crimes weren't only frequent, but pretty obvious. The fans protested, but nothing changed. ILLIT, the group that emerged on the other side, was a group that was hardly a showcase of the talent on display on the show, nor a reflection of the fans and their biases. It was a reflection of who the producers felt fit their pre-established concept for the group, an influencing factor that wasn't made clear to the fans watching, nor potentially, to the idols participating. Ironically, since the whole point of a survival show is to drum up support and build a fanbase for a group's upcoming debut, ILLIT has arguably started off on a worse foot than if they had just dropped 'Magnetic' on YouTube out of nowhere, NewJeans 'Attention' style.

However, regardless of their rocky start, ILLIT is here, with their debut mini album 'SUPER REAL ME', featuring the title track 'Magnetic' - let's talk about it. 'Magnetic' capitalizes on that glitchy, 8-bit, distorted, bedroom pop sound that's been blowing up recently, both in the k-pop industry by NewJeans, LOONA, and tripleS, and in the western space by Pinkpantheress. It's easily catchy, and highly danceable, and the members sound amazing on it - I felt especially drawn to Minju's delivery, her vocal tone is beautifully unique, and Wonhee did a stellar job as the centric member of the choruses. Magnetic's allusions to NewJeans are undeniable, if only lacking that certain NewJeans je ne sais quoi. I don't really have a problem with this, if I get more fun songs out of groups allegedly 'copying' NewJeans then it's a win for me, my only fear is that if ILLIT doesn't find their own niche they will be called knock-off NewJeans for the rest of their careers, which isn't fair to the girls. TripleS got accused of something similar back with AAA's 'Generation', but since then they have carved out a space for themselves in the industry, making music and exploring aesthetics others aren't.

As for the b-sides, I was kind of obsessed with 'My World', even though it is functionally an intro; it's such an unexpected earworm. 'Midnight Fiction' is cute, even if I think it needed another hook or layer of production to elevate it more. 'Lucky Girl Syndrome' is slightly better than 'Midnight Fiction', but a bit worse than 'Magnetic'. It's very obvious that the title came before the track, and it bizarrely sounds kind of like 'Sensitive' by Loossemble? The chorus is slightly weak, but I am obsessed with the instrumentation and the production choices - this song sounds nothing like NewJeans, I really hope they draw from this vibe in their future releases.

Overall, a pretty decent debut. You will definitely catch me streaming 'Magnetic' over the next few weeks, whether it will have the longevity to stick around in my playlist for longer remains to be seen. Good luck ILLIT, you've had a rough start in the industry, but it's clear that they have a big career ahead of them, and I for one, am seated.

Pre1: Birth - ARTMS [LOONA] (Dall)

After an iconic run of Haseul and Heejin's solo projects, as well as ODD EYE CIRCLE's first release out of BBC, 5/12 of the LOONA girls are here as ARTMS. 'Birth' is a song that operates outside of the conventions of kpop formulae; its experimental, confrontational, melancholy and bears an undercurrent of rage. Tonally and structurally it is unique from anything being released right now, and lyrically its compelling and mysterious. If this is a taste of what the upcoming album is going to sound like, I am extremely excited.

The music video is one of the best kpop has to offer - its so unlike anything else I have seen. I heavily encourage you all to go check out the theories the orbits/ouriis have been cooking up because LOONA LORE IS BACK!! I am very curious if the loossemble lore will link to this in any way, but that remains to be seen.

EENIE MEENIE - CHUNG HA, feat. HONGJOONG

Chungha is back, with a new company and an old concept. I'm not sure how to feel about this track, its clear she feels very confident in this style and it does suit her more than 'Sparkling', but I think 'Sparkling' was overall a better song. The production of 'Eenie Meenie' is very high quality and I especially loved that guitar layer in the chorus, and bringing Hongjoong in for a verse was a great call, he fits the song and matches Chungha's vibe perfectly. Unfortunately however, I don't find the chorus to be very catchy, which is clearly what the song is banking on in order to chart. The whole 'eenie meenie minie mo' thing is odd, but honestly could have been worse if this song had been given to anyone other than Chungha, the real death sentence for this song was the lack of interesting melody. I'm happy that Chungha is now making the kind of music she wants to, I just hope that the quality of releases go up in the future.

Only One - VCHA

Who knew that when Fifty Fifty crumbled due to their (allegedly) god awful company, it would be VCHA of all groups to successfully pick up the retro girlpop gauntlet?? 'Only One' is genuinely so fun, that post chorus is a killer, and even the mildly awkward writing clears up after the first verse. The girls have such great chemistry, and they are all genuinely improving their skills every comeback, and although I may have questioned JYP's decision to debut girls who had barely been in training, seeing the girls improve in real time is lowkey actually a selling point - like now I want to pay attention to them to see how good they are going to get?? JYP making an intelligent marketing decision?? In this economy?? Congratulations VCHA, you have officially established yourself as a force to be reckoned with, KATSEYE had better bring the heat when they debut to compete with this.

MINI REVIEWS:

Get Goin' - aespa: did you know this song existed? no! Is it surprisingly really fun? well yes! not sure what aespa has to do with fraggle rock, but if it takes Apple TV spamming SM Entertianment's dms to get aespa to release more music, then that's what must be done.

The knight who can't die and the silk cradle - LUCY: (req. by @a-moth-to-the-light) I've always been mildly aware of LUCY, but until my moot requested I review their latest release, I had never heard any of their songs. Needless to say, I was severely impressed. This song is so cinematic and heartfelt - to my knowledge it isn't part of an OST to a particularly cinematic kdrama, but it might as well be. I heavily encourage you all to go watch the mv with subtitles on, or read the translation, because lyrically this is a masterpiece. LUCY, you have officially caught my attention, I will be checking out future releases.

Paths to home - 문채원, HOWUS: The music video for this song, at time of writing, currently has 147 views, I have no clue how I stumbled across it, but I am so glad I did. 'Paths to home' is a beautifully constructed and performed citypop inspired track that to me evokes LOONA's early discography, especially those from Hyunjin's solo project. It is so perfectly constructed to my tastes, I love it to death. I have no idea how 'HOWUS' as a project works, I don't know if it's a group, a company, a subunit, or apparently even when it was released because according to some websites it came out in 2022 (the struggles of extremely nugu kpop cannot be understated), but what I do know is that this song deserves more attention, and I adore it. This is one for the NewJeans, LOONA yyxy, tripleS +(KR)ystal Eyes girlies.

Wish You Hell - WENDY (Red Velvet): SM finally gave Wendy a song that isn't a ballad!!! This song is pretty fun, but I wish it bit more oomph. The lyrics leave much to be desired, but Wendy's vocal performance is naturally very high quality, although I wish she went a bit harder in some sections - she's singing about wishing someone hell, but tonally it sounds like she's serenading them lol. A fun song, could have been better with another few drafts. Seulgi's 'best Red Velvet solo project' crown is yet to slip.

BBB - Purple Kiss: I will never shut the fuck up about how good 'Zombie' is, so seeing them explore similar sounds is so exciting for me!! 'BBB' is a very easy going listen, never awkward, never unpleasant, and although I think it needed a little something more to elevate it, it's a fun song I could easily see myself loving this summer. Swan absolutely ate up this comeback btw.

XXL - YOUNG POSSE: Bizarre sfx aside, I am very glad young posse is attempting to bring back 2000s hip hop into kpop, even if the execution is mildly clunky.

No, I'm not being sarcastic. I keep seeing this a lot on a ton of hockey blogs. (for example "d*nn", "p*tr*ck k*ne", "bl*es" or "v*g*s g*ld*n kn*ghts"), and honestly, it's really, really, bugging me, especially as someone who has some team lb tags filtered. I know most of you mean well, but this might not be the best idea. Even if you don't like saying their name. Even if you're censoring it as a joke. Even if you're worried about people you don't like flocking your blog (which, there's a block button for that btw). For one, Tumblr allows you to filter out certain words and tags. And people may already have specific players/filters tagged. If a post contains said filtered word/tag, it'll look like this:

The person has an option to view the post, via a button that reads simply "View post". End ID). By censoring them, Tumblr won't pick it up, and people will still see the post they don't want to see. Additionally, censoring words, especially l*ke th*s (like this) might not be helpful to visually impaired folks, especially those who use screenreaders.

"So, what should I do instead?" If you're talking about something a player did, here's some tag suggestions I have: If you're talking about a player who has assault or abuse accusations against them, you can use "tw assault", "tw abuse", "tw sa" (if the accusation involves sa), "tw violence" or "violence mention" (if violence is involved), or similar tags! If you're talking about someone who has a history of bigotry, try tagging "racism", "ableism", "homophobia", "tw slur" (if there's a slur involved), or other similar tags! I do see people use "tw (team/player)" as well (ex. "tw hawks", "tw auston matthews", "cw wilson" or "cw boston bruins") as well, however, I also discourage against that, because not every hockeyblr user has those filtered, and from my understanding they also aren't that well known. Again, simply tagging the players' names or the name of the team is enough half the time. (And, as a bonus, if you already have "tw (player/team)" tagged, instead of removing them, you can also simply add the player or team name to the tags!) If you're simply trash talking a player or a team... just say the name. It's not that hard, really. However, you can also tag the post with "trash talk" if you don't want people seeing it. Other good tags/words to use include: "rant" or "vent", which can be especially helpful to folks who dont wanna see huge rants, vents or complaints. "tw injury", which you can use to filter out videos or discussions containing injuries. "tw blood" and similar tags can also be helpful if blood is involved. favorite thing about them: HOW to even answer this??? i think granit might be as close to "perfect" as a human can get. first of all let's get out of the way how stupid gorgeous he is and has been for basically his entire adult life--my personal favorite granit aesthetic era is his early bratty twink time at arsenal (if he's wearing 29, you know he's extra fine) but he's stunning in any era. his cheekbones should probably be arrested. the side dish to this is how fucking awful he looks in his selfies 😂 he's way too young to take such bad photos of himself. there's some legend that quilters would purposely make a mistake in their quilt to show humility--that only god can be perfect--while i don't know if this is a true story, maybe granit's selfies are the contemporary version of this 😂

as for the REST of it...

who the fuck is this man? he's so strong and solid while not being an asshole, toxic man with no emotions. he operates on a value system that feels almost archaic sometimes, but in a good way, like he'd probably lie his nice coat over a puddle for mikel to step on in the rain. he truly seems to have the most golden heart. But he has a heart of molten gold—more lethal than the hard form.  More alive.  Overtaking everything it touches. His natural leadership and charisma are truly insane. My sister is a little like him in this way, and it's always truly fascinating to watch--someone who just naturally commands the attention, leads a conversation, even the most experienced and hardened team captain seems to defer to granit for the team talks. while "taking over everything and commanding the attention" is often a really annoying and unlikeable quality, for people for whom it comes that naturally you can't even hate them for it because they're not trying to be pushy or an asshole. they're just a born leader.

i also used to think he was kind of a himbo, but i feel like i owe him an apology because he actually seems quite intelligent and serious. he's one of those footballers who can give an actual academic subject answer for "what was your favorite subject in school" (math lol)

random headcanon: i don't think granit would like, label his sexuality as anything? i think he just does what feels right.

unpopular opinion: i've definitely expressed this before but i do not--sincerely do not--agree with the popular view that granit would "lose control" when he got physical. for example (sorry veronika hahaha) when he chokes ashley westwood. if you look at his body language there--or even in like november 2022 vs chelsea where he kind of flung chalobah around--it's honestly a body that is very IN control of itself. he just came at these games from a very different mindset. he's naturally aggressive, goal-oriented, here to both win but also defend the honor of both himself and the team, so-- confident in his value system, he didn't care what he had to do to make it happen.

7. Kim Taehyung - He's got a nice-looking face. Like the Indian Brad Pitt, but he's Korean, which is somehow even better if you're into k-pop, apparently. I can tell on a cerebral level that he is handsome, but my heart doesn't know it... you know what I mean? His slim build is okay, but even he knows it can be better. I'm very interested in seeing what Taehyung looks like in 2025. I suspect he could go several levels up in my ranking, but we'll see.

6. Jeon Jungkook - The fact I'm ranking Jung Kook sixth should tell people the caliber of visual that is in BTS. All seven of them are mind numbingly hot. No cap. JK is ranked here because despite how hot he is, despite how peculiarly pretty he is, he is still the most baby-faced out of the guys. In my opinion.

5. Kim Seokjin - The shoulders give him several points I'm sorry. I mean, yeah his build is a bit lanky and he could fill out a bit more but still, the shoulders are wide af. I count it towards his overall visual and Jin does have a very Korean handsomeness to him. He's the sort of guy my grandma would want for me... and I know I'm not the only person from my background who has thought so.

4. Kim Namjoon - Joon has the prettiest eyes in BTS. Maybe Jimin ties with him, but Joon's dragon eyes are definitely ranked first in any case. He's worked on his physique too in recent years which has bumped him up my list. I wish he was more coordinated in his motor skills, but he's still pretty decent.

3. Jung Hoseok - Hobi is such a dreamboat. He's lanky but it works for him. The way Tyler Joseph's does for him. But even better than that, J-Hope has stamina. This man is fit. And he is beautiful. Definitively masculine but so delicately pretty. Like y'all don't know what platinum blonde Hobi did to me in 2021. This man is hot and capable and that is a very dangerous combination take it from me.

2. Min Yoongi - Nobody is surprised. I don't even know what to say because I actually bias him. Like I just typed his name out and had to pause to take a breath. I'm keeping it real with y'all rn. I'm that gone. I like that he's a bulldog the whole fandom sees as a cat because that's what he is. I love the music he makes. The way he mixes bass and toplines in all his tracks is incredible. Like, all the lyrics to the chorus of Beyonce's EGO, apply to Yoongi in spades.

Park Jimin - I've said before, he could seem gamine + serpentine + feline + cute all at the same time. It's just fun looking at a face capable of showing so much at once. It's fun looking at Jimin. That's the sort of visual he has. His face is interesting. It is odd in the most benign ways. And by that I mean, most people typically have one definitive facial feature, one that stands out, like a strong browbone, high cheekbones, etc. Really pretty people have maybe two, three tops. For Jimin, his entire face is constructed from distinctive features. I don't want to completely objectify the man by spelling it out for you but Jimin is ridiculously beautiful.

Jimin has looks. You know what I mean? Jimin has looks where he accentuates certain things. My favourite Jimin looks are some when he looks serpentine, a bit like a snake. Like this:

(The first time I saw this photoshoot I remember I thought, "this is the look of a guy who will go there if there's need to." It's never made sense to underestimate him.)

I'm not sure it needs to be said but I also like his physique the best, whether it's leaner or bigger. Whatever weight he has he carries it well, he moves easily and that certainly adds to his visual. Jungkook too has recently mastered moving through space with ease, I hope what I mean can be communicated, but what I'm trying to say is: a very easy motion with no wasted movements. Anyway, Jimin is best at this, and maybe at a sub-conscious level it adds to his visual for me.

Mafuyu's Room

After meeting with the person who visited her Sekai, Clay Moorington, Mafuyu look back at the lyrics that he and she made together.

This lyrics supposed to be send to K to let her make the song, and originally it was draft and Mafuyu give up on that as she try to make a music her own.

Mafuyu started to have a second thought whether she should send it to K. Finally decided, she did.

If that lyrics he and Clay made together is good, K's next song is probably good as well, and maybe she can finally find her true feeling.

Kanade's Room

After the strange encounter she witnessed, she try to think if she dreaming or not. No, she's not... But still, she meet Hatsune Miku? Why? What was that?

Just as before she could think more, a notification sound from Nightcord rang. Kanade take over to look at Nightcord, it was Yuki. She sees the message.

-"Here is the lyrics for you, K"

-"I have attach a file for it for you to see it, K"

"Strange? If I'm acting strange, then aren't lot of you the same?" Mafuyu said, so bluntly, very emotionless in her tone of voice, "Besides, the truth is– K, Enanan, Amia... You all want to disappear more than anyone else in the world..."

That's the first line that Clay heard when he get inside the Sekai and try to find Miku or Mafuyu. He hide behind one of the blocks in the Sekai as he observe Mafuyu with 3 other girls. The 3 girls have a different and interesting reaction upon hearing what Mafuyu said to them.

Mafuyu continue, "Why do you all talk like I'm the only strange one here?"

... She's not wrong on that...

Clay notice the pink hair girl try to convince Mafuyu that they're fine and they aren't what Mafuyu said they are. But Mafuyu didn't believe it at all, as she knows that the pink hair girl knows what she's talking about.

Just as she says that, she turn back to Miku and told her she doesn't want these people in her Sekai no more. Miku complied Mafuyu's order as she go towards each of the girls one by one, then touch them as they suddenly disappear. But Clay notice, when Miku go towards the last girl, she can notice Miku was halt for a moment and finally she touch the last girl.

Finally it's only Mafuyu, Miku and Clay—

"I know you're here, Mr. Moorington..." Mafuyu said.

Clay finally show himself, Mafuyu turn to him, blank expression. No light in those eyes...

Miku look at both Clay and Mafuyu, worried what's gonna happen next. Clay look back at spot where those 3 girls were standing...

"You said to those girls, that they want to disappear more than anyone else. Why?" Clay ask. He knew it might be a stupid question, even he himself don't know how to express it...

"I said it because I know there's more people than just them that also wants to disappear, just like me. But unlike me, they don't even want to admit it." Mafuyu answer.

"And you think telling them that straight to their face would solve it? When you also don't know if they really want to disappear?" He ask.

Mafuyu was quiet for a moment, Miku started to feel anxious seeing her host being questioned, "It's what I can answer to them..." Mafuyu muttered.

"...Do you really thinking of wanting to disappear if you can't find what you need?"

"Yes. At any cost, if I can't find it, I just disappear..." Mafuyu answer.

"..." Clay doesn't have any words in him to say something to Mafuyu. Why isn't he saying anything? His a knight, it's his duty to save lives... Physically, but emotionally...?

As Clay ask the holographic wizard, Merlok finally gets to meet his student again.

What shows on screen, is yes, Clay's fighting the monster in the simulation training room but the more he sees it, the more something is off... As a knight, it is his duty to protect the citizens from monster. So why... Is his fighting seems more aggressive...?

"Normally, I say your fight skill is the same but looking back at it..." Ava said as she just found herself a bit uncomfortable looking back at the screen.

"Clay, my boy," Merlok said, Clay look at him, "Are you alright?"

A girl laying on the ground if the Sekai, finally made a decision of wanting to disappear after she realized, she can't save her friend... Yuki...

The thought of wanting to disappear keep on and on replaying in her head. As it continue, she didn't even notice or hear a footsteps walking towards her.

"Are you seriously thinking of wanting to disappear as well?"

An unfamiliar voice said. Kanade look up and saw unfamiliar man looking down at her. She didn't respond and it seems the man is going to take it as a yes.

The man sighs, "Why?" He ask.

Kanade seems to startled by that question but answer it anyway, "I tried to make a song that could save my friend but in the end, I didn't save her..." She said, "No song that I made have save her... If I couldn't save her with the song I've made, could I even save everyone if it didn't work on her...?"

... Just like before, he is not an emotional person. Heck, he didn't even know how to comfort someone, he did try to help Jestro but... He couldn't...

Looking back now, the girl in front of him still stare blankly and have no will to do other than laying on the ground thinking she should disappear.

Clay sigh and made no move nor did he know what to say. Until both of them hear another voice, singing...

"Hm? That song..." Finally Kanade sat up upon hearing the song. Clay also hear it, the song, the voice...

Both of them saw Miku, singing so softly as if there's no day for tomorrow. "Miku..."

The Vocaloid stop singing as she turn around to see Kanade and Clay, "Ah, Kanade, Clay. You guys, are back..."

So the girl's name is Kanade. Clay turn to Kanade waiting for her to say something. Kanade ask Miku how she knows the song, Miku reply that the song she sang have been in this Sekai from the first time. Clay is now curious, the song Miku sang have been in this Sekai from the first time?

That's when he heard Kanade says that's the music she made, how can a music she made had been in the Sekai for awhile. Miku reveal that maybe her music did reach her friend. Clay notice Kanade's surprised expression but then it turn to hesitate.

She want to deny what Miku said, but Miku insist that Kanade did reach her friend with her music. It proves in the Sekai. But Kanade still seems hesitate and worried. She then said, "Can... Can my music... Save her?"

Miku said she don't know but, what she knows Kanade did help her friend to find her feelings. But also, maybe Kanade and this friend of her might be the same. Her friend's and Kanade's feeling might be the same that the reason why Kanade can be in here because they're the same...

The same... Clay can't help but stare blankly at both girls. He tune out their conversation as he seems to be in daze after hearing that. Suddenly he saw that Kanade left.

Only him and Miku, only her...

"Clay...?" Miku said his name.

"That song..." He said, hesitate to ask what he wants to say, "Can you sing it again..."

He didn't look up to see Miku's expression, but he saw a glimpse of her smiling at him. Just a small smile.

He had done it, is he? He have, yet, another argument with Lance. And just had enough that he almost destroy the squirebots... Thankfully, the others stop him...

He really should try to calm himself as he is back in the Sekai...

That's when he saw Miku, Mafuyu, that Kanade girl and the pink hair one. Standing at the opposite side of one another.

They didn't notice him as he observe the situation. Kanade said something along a line about how she can't save Mafuyu with her music but she's promise her she did a song that can save her. Mafuyu, of course, reject it and deny that Kanade can save her as she command Miku to make them leave.

Miku, didn't do anything, didn't follow Mafuyu's order. Clay notice that, as he saw Mafuyu seems confused why Miku didn't do what she said but finally knows why as well.

That's when she started to yelled at Kanade and the pink hair girl. Telling them to go away, shut up, leave her alone if they know nothing about her. Leave her Sekai and never see her again. Clay can't help but just want to reach Mafuyu, even if he did, she may not accept it...

Then suddenly, Kanade said she understand Mafuyu and also feel the same way as her. Clay seems to be surprised by that statement, Mafuyu pause as she look at Kanade. Kanade confess that she have made a music, that caused an unhappiness towards that one important person in her life, her dad. Clay stay silent.

Kanade said how her dad was also a composer. But due to her also a composer as well, it started to pressure her dad to the point he doubt his composing skill. Her dad think that his music might be too old and unwelcome whenever he heard her music. She even said her father would pull a fake smile just to not worried his daughter, but she knows. She knows she hurt him...

She knows, and yet she did nothing—

"But was it really your fault?" Clay said, so suddenly as the girls look around them to see who said that. That's when the pink hair girl notice him.

Kanade seems surprised, "You..."

"Clay...?" Miku said.

Clay didn't say anything but he look at Mafuyu, who still keeping herself quiet, even after hearing Kanade's story. Kanade then continue, saying it is her fault, she's the reason that her father was hurting because of her, and she's the reason his future is destroy... She also thought of wanting to disappear as well, however her father told her to keep on making a music to save everyone. So the reason she still alive, is because she wants to save everyone with her music. She wants to save them with her music, even if they're all are in despair, she will try and keep composing her music for them.

Finally, she told Mafuyu that she might not feel the same as her with different story but she knows that feeling well. She wants to save Mafuyu as well.

Mafuyu hearing all of that, just a give a hollow smile. Then she said Kanade's dad have cursed her...

Kanade was surprised by that, as Mafuyu continue that Kanade's cursed is limitless. Then she's back to her blank expression, she don't care about any of it and says do not involved her in on this. Continue on saying Kanade wants to save her because she wants to save herself...

Okay, Clay take that personally but still... That's when Mafuyu says Kanade and her might have to suffer together because Kanade also wants to disappear. Then she continue saying even if Kanade's music did reach her, did save her, she will be back to wanting to disappear again. And so, she bid farewell to her friends.

"Ah...!"

"Wait, Yuki!"

"Mafuyu–"

"Stop joking around!"

A new voice suddenly been hear. Clay look over at the source of the voice, a brown hair girl. She also one of the girls that he seen before. She seems to be frustrated.

"Huh?"

"Eh, Enanan? What are you doing here?" The pink hair girl said.

Enanan? Clay thought, that's a bit weird...

"I came to have a word with her... With Yuki..." Enanan? said, "Because I'm SO disgusted by that girl who's all "I can't find myself" and "It's better if I disappear"!"

Okay that's a bit harsh but guess they were right, the truth is harsh.

Mafuyu didn't say anything back. This gives the brown hair girl an opportunity to say what she wants to say. Starting with saying what's wrong with Mafuyu, how can she wants to disappear when she have what the brown hair girl doesn't. This cause a bit confusion for Clay and Mafuyu. Clay with "what did she mean by that?" Mafuyu with "I have no idea what you're talking about..?"

Mafuyu ask what's she talking about and said she doesn't have anything. The brown hair girl didn't seem convince by it as she said didn't think that at all. She continue with how Mafuyu had talents, she can make something work out of something, compliment her everything what she have. Then she saying how people looking forward and love her music as well.

That's when it finally gets to Clay, this girl... She is envy of Mafuyu's talent, gift, she wants something that Mafuyu have and yet, she also want to help her realize it.

It get to the point that the brown hair girl started to cry, saying she desperately wants Mafuyu's talent as well. Saying how Mafuyu's music have been affecting her to the point she wants to hear it again. She hate Mafuyu, she really is, and yet, somewhere inside of her doesn't want Mafuyu gone... She wants to hear more of Mafuyu's song again... She beg her not to disappear and create more music...

Finally, Mafuyu reply that she doesn't care nor want her amazing song. She doesn't want anyone's praise. All she ever want is to find herself... That's the only reason for it. She continue saying how the brown hair girl might not understand at all.

The brown hair girl feeling frustrated and irritated by it. Clay can't help but feel a bit awkward on some part of their conversation but he noticed the pink hair one seems to be smiling a little and saying how she did understand a bit about what Mafuyu's feeling.

The pink hair girl said how even if their talented, rich or cute, everyone have the same rough moment... No matter how wonderful a song Mafuyu makes, if she can't find herself at all of that hard work. It might be no point to her at all. They then agree if Mafuyu really do want to disappear, then she could do what she wants. Because even if they try to do something, only Mafuyu, herself, knows her problem...

Just before Mafuyu could say anything, the pink hair girl continue and didn't give her a chance. They say, Mafuyu and them are kind of similar... Then they explain how the environment surrounding them try to change their shape, a bit by bit. To resist it, they have to accept it... They get tired after being so desperate, and stop caring about anything. That's what they thought that make Mafuyu and them alike in sense. They continue on saying not a lot of people understanding the feeling they have. So even if Mafuyu gone away, they will miss her everyday.

After hearing everything, Clay can't help but felt even more anxious from each story these girls giving. Kanade with her cursed creating a music to save everyone after she hurt her father. The brown hair girl that hates Mafuyu and yet, she doesn't want Mafuyu to disappear because she wants to hear more of her song. And the pink hair girl who got cast out by the society because they are not label as what they were meant to be.

Suddenly he heard Mafuyu finally talk, "You're all are so selfish..." She said as she look at all of them one by one.

"Selfishly being jealous," The brown hair girl.

"Selfishly being sympathetic," The pink hair girl.

"Selfishly trying to save me..." Kanade...

She take one look at Clay, she wants say what she thinks he might be selfish of something... But she doesn't say it... He is selfishly lost... Just like her...

She then continue saying she had enough of them saying anything else. She wants to disappear, that's her True Feeling...

"Yuki... I still want to save you, though..." Kanade said.

That's the final straw as Mafuyu scream how tire she is. She is tired thinking there's still some hope left of her to find herself, that she can still find herself... She continue on saying she shouldn't have to think that she can save herself from the very beginning. Then she scream that she don't even think she had every chance to be saved anymore...

That took Clay and Kanade to be cautious and wary of Mafuyu's confession as she continue saying she exhausted and how she keeps on search, search and search again and again. She didn't find what she wants, she's back again, she's fall to despair again and the loops goes again. She even ask, what more can she supposed to do?

"I'll keep on creating."

Clay was surprised by that answer as he look at Kanade. Is she, willing to do it? Even Mafuyu was surprised by that answer, "What...?"

"Even if this song can't truly save you, I'll keep creating until it does." Kanade said, "Until you find yourself... I'll keep creating."

"What are you saying?" Mafuyu ask.

Why do you want to do it? Clay thought.

"I'll keep on creating... Even if it's my father's cursed... I don't want to see someone disappear in front of my eyes again..." Kanade said.

...His head... It's feel so... Dizzy...

He can't hear what Mafuyu and Kanade saying but he knows Mafuyu is shocked by Kanade's answer as she continue trying to understand why would Kanade want to keep on creating, even if she did want to disappear. Kanade do really want to disappear, and even if she did, all Mafuyu have to say to her, "I haven't found myself yet...". Just by saying it, Kanade will continue on composing.

"But isn't it going to be a burden? You know what happened to your father, would you really want to add another one..." Clay can't help but ask her. Why would she want to do that...

The pink hair girl look at him in surprised, thinking the same thing he did. The brown hair girl however was shocked, she doesn't notice him before, so that's understandable...

Mafuyu also agree with Clay's question, "Would you really be adding another curse just to help me? That's like... If I have to find myself, you have to keep on writing song!" Mafuyu said, "That's..."

"Yeah, I know." Kanade said, she understand what she's going to do, she understand what she sign up to... But it doesn't matter to her.

Mafuyu, and Clay, felt nothing else to protest Kanade's word and kindness...

"Why... Why would you go that far...?" Mafuyu ask.

"Because..." Kanade give a warm smile to Mafuyu, "I am selfish."

Mafuyu and the others have nothing to say as Kanade continue, "Either way I have to keep on creating music. Adding you on top won't be a burden at all..." Kanade said.

Finally Mafuyu said how she don't get it. Even if Kanade help her, her work might be come from nothing and it all will fell down. But... She still going to do it?

Suddenly, a giggle could be heard. Clay look over at Mafuyu, she giggled. She giggle how Kanade is so stubborn and desperate to save her. She giggle how Kanade did all of this just to save her and yet, she can't help but giggle at that desperateness is silly...

How desperate she is...

Finally she stop and ask Kanade one more time, if she really want to make a song just for her? Kanade just agreed with it, it doesn't matter, as long as she could save Mafuyu...

Finally it ended, Clay can't help but smile a little at those two girls finally end they're problem until he felt some poke his arm. He turn to look at the pink hair girl.

"Yo, so..." The pink hair girl said as they glances at Mafuyu and back at him, "You know Yuki?"

Yuki...? Oh, they means Mafuyu, "Yes, yes I do."

"Ooh nice!" They said, "My name's Akiyama Mizuki. Nice to meet you...?"

"Clay Moorington." He says quickly.

"Ooh, a foreigner I presume?" Before Clay could say anything, Mizuki call out to the brown hair girl to come over, "Enanan! Meet the new guy!"

The brown hair girl walk over to them and look very nervous, Mizuki sense her nervousness, tease her about it, "Eh? Enanan, don't tell me you embarrassed because there's a guy here and he hears about all of your problem~"

"Ugh! Shut it! Honestly, who wouldn't be nervous?!" The brown hair girl said.

She's right, who wouldn't be.

"My name is Clay Moorington," Clay introduce himself again.

"Ah, well, I'm Shinonome Ena. Please just call me Ena, Mr. Moorington..." Shinonome Ena said.

Clay nodded. Until they heard Miku's voice, "Now we can finally sing together..."

"No, you've found it." Miku said, "This Sekai... And this song being here is the proof."

"My feeling... Is here...?" Mafuyu said again to make sure it is what she heard is correct.

"Yes. So let's sing together," Miku said again.

Mafuyu thanked Miku, Miku smile just at word. Unbeknownst to them, Clay was stepping back, he is not much of a singer and he didn't think he can sing at the time like this. Until he felt his arm being pull back.

"C'mon Mr. Moorington! Let's sing together!" Mizuki said, excitedly look at Clay.

Clay felt even more anxious and nervous, "I, I don't really think..."

"It's fine! Maybe your singing ability might not be too bad!" Mizuki chuckle at their words. Clay is still in lost for words and before he could say anything, Miku already said something.

"Let's sing, the six of us together." Miku said and look back at Clay, she seems to want him to stay with them too.

1076 — Old friends

I’m sure the chapter titles will make sense once we have the whole picture, but at the moment I am very confused. Sure, it refers to the end of the chapter, but will it also (in hindsight) refer to the beginning?

No cover story but very pretty colour spread:

The dynamics of Kaku and Lucci with Zoro and Luffy are just *chef’s kiss*

Oda’s perspective shifts, both narratively and artistically, are really nifty. Here, for example, we don’t know what Kaku means, since his face is in shadow and mouth hidden. We just have the two very different interpretations as offered by Luffy and Zoro to go on.

The following pages don’t shed any further light: did Kaku want to get feee to pursue their original goal in the end, or did he just keep mum about it to reduce antagonism due to “you’re just here to kill us”-vibes? Why is Lucci really telling all — is he confident in their ability to fulfil their orders, no matter what their opponents know, or does he bet on honesty over deception to get out of their cuffs?

It’s a nice reminder that the others are still in danger!

However, Zoro, you should have more confidence in your crewmates. They can take care of themselves once they get their head in the game, even the Weakling Trio (all conveniently paired up with a stronger member at the moment).

Good thinking, Luffy, making sure Lucci goes first after you when all’s said and done. Of course Lucci couldn’t ignore such a thinly-veiled insult.

Luffy does have an eye for personal drivers and battle strategy, doesn’t he?

I just enjoy the pairing of brute force + brute force and slicy + slicy.

But what is happening on the island? Who captured Vegapunk?

Is it evil Lilith, who was shown to control the seabeasts? Is it logical Shaka, voice of reason and analytical skills? Is it A Secret Third Thing?

First, the introductory panelling is genius. Even though we see a house, the disparity between ship size and house size could be chalked up to rushed sketching or lazy reading. The placement of the “bar at a small port”-bubble, completely obscuring the ship behind confuses further.

And then, of course, we have just a silhouette we all know and a very familiar call-back to the very first chapter. Everything looks nice and normal. The size of the sake cup is similar to what Shanks was shown to share with Whiebeard, so nothing particularly remarkable there — the dude’s been shown to love partying, after all, maybe he just loves over-sized cups. The size of the meat could also be just seaking or something similar.

And then, sudden giant blueberries.

A bit weird that the giants follow Shanks, though. I thought they’d be much too fierce warriors to do so, but on the other hand: Harjudin and his New Giant Pirates served under Buggy, so maybe the last 100 years without proper leadership really left Elbaf to the mercy of other powerful players?

And how will Usopp visit if the island is under Shanks influence — would a Straw Hat visit be construed as an act of war?

And poor Makino (beloved OTP) if the behaviour of the ladies in this chapter is something to go by. A girl in every port, huh…

Kid looks a bit worried there, while Shanks exudes calm and confidence.

I wonder if Shanks has the last missing Poneglyph. We also didn’t get confirmation that they found Kaido’s red one in Wano, so that’s still up in the air.

River City Girls Zero (2022) / Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka (1994)

I was really excited to try this game, since we're still sorely missing localizations for most SNES Kunio games, and this is the one that originally inspired the first River City Girls. After that game released, and thanks to the wonderful collection of all the NES Kunio entries translated to english for modern system, I kinda got very into the franchise, you see.

Turns out this was a massive disappointment. It's a very bland, very linear beat' em up that completely fails to live up to the expectations set during the previous console generation, only providing higher quality visuals and sound, and a slightly more intrincate story that takes itself too seriously for how unimpressive it is.

The new localization is fine, with a couple new opening and ending songs, a new animated opening sequence, and the option to choose between a 1994 faithful translation and one that tries to link this game more closely to the characterization of the River City Girls storyline. That's if you're playing in english of course, I noticed every other language only gets one translation. Tough luck.

I felt this localization job was completely unnecessary. As a game, you're essentially forking over 10-15 bucks for a SNES rom with little replayability and extras that add next to nothing to the experience. I would rather pay full price for a collection of all the SNES games with less bells and whistles, if they did it for the dozen NES titles they should have less of an issue doing it with the 5 or so SNES ones. Instead, they chose to give us one single very mediocre game, and I find it hard to have any hope that they'll release the others in the future.

River City Girls 2 (2022)

Even after the previous letdown, I was still very hopeful and excited for a full sequel, and I think it mostly lived up to those expectations. I want to play more of it, play through the story with different characters and do more of the side quests, which is a sign that I had a good time.

There's tons more dialogue for each of the playable characters, which is a treat. There's always some funny moments to laugh at, and I find the cast to be quite charming. Their movesets have also been improved and expanded, so there's more to do and experiment with during fights. You can get pretty creative and do some demanding combos if you're really willing to explore what everyone can do. The combat is a clear step up and probably the easiest thing to praise.

The story is also quite nice, pretty much what I'd expect from a sequel, fun the whole way through, but it's also where I began to have issues. I think some secondary characters that could easily be considered series staples, and who showed up in the first game, should have made an appearance here, but I guess that's my personal take and it can be forgiven. My biggest issue was how Ken was used, with his resemblance to Kunio having actually zero significance to the story, and him being apparently much older than the main cast? I believe he could have made for a more interesting and engaging baddie if he was also a teenager and a similar plotline to the one in Zero had been used.

And, oh man, don't get me started on how they fumbled the dragon twin(k)s. They're usually a top threat in any game they're in, and they got fantastic redesigns here, but they were barely used and I didn't even get to fight them. That should be some sort of crime. Genuinely the most underutilized members of the villain cast. What the hell happened here.

I guess I didn't notice this sort of stuff back when I wasn't a fan and these characters were all new to me, huh. Maybe this is all just fanboy rantings. Maybe it's not a big deal. But I seriously think the dragon twins are cool and they should be used more.

Other than that, my roomie (who I played through the entire game with) and I felt that the frequent fetch quests and backtracking required to advance the story got fairly annoying, but perhaps we wouldn't mind it if we were playing at our own pace and took our sweet time. I think playing with more patience would greatly improve the experience. All in all, I believe it was a very fun game, great fun with a friend, adorable characters, just not perfect you know. I'm only a bit passionate about some of that stuff.
