People on this website really trying to downplay the specific role of destiel in the events of November 5th 2020 ‘it could have been any other ship that went canon at that time and had the same effect’ no.

Nothing else is destiel.

Nothing else is 12 years and hundreds of episodes of extremely obvious and deliberate queerbaiting that was Vehemently denied by the production team. Nothing else is the ship about characters whose larger overarching plot is literally fighting against their own pre-determined narrative to attain free will. Nothing else proved in the 11th hour Just before the show ended that the meta narrative and queer reading by fans who insisted there was something there and who were constantly called crazy by the production and by other fans and by the rest of the internet were RIGHT.

The CW did market research! About whether to make it canon! In a show they always pretended was aimed primarily at middle (conservative) America!!!

The queer subtext was so Fucking Strong by the end of the show, because the writers constantly wrote themselves into corners that could Only be explained away by destiel, that they HAD to admit defeat and canonize it.

And THEN even after they made it canon, they denied it some more and tried to downplay it! But it happened! The angel is fucking gay!!!!

Destiel is THE great American queerbait and had been a staple of the culture of this site for over a decade before November 5 2020. There is a REASON it is the most popular ship on AO3. ‘The same thing would have happened if johnlock became canon or spirk or whatever else’ no it simply would not have because crucially CRUCIALLY those ships Never Became Canon! The fact that Destiel of all the popular queerbait slash ships of the past few decades somehow at long last DID, and in a way that Still refused to just let the shippers have it and allow any implication of full reciprocation and that the final two episodes and the entire cast absolutely refused to acknowledge in any way, is why the canonization of destiel is one of the wildest things to happen to fandom culture as a whole in recent memory, and you cannot theoretically remove the destiel of it all and have it be the same kind of event.

The reason november 5 happened like it did, why people started making jokes at all, is because the fandom cultural juggernaut that is destiel becoming canon is the only thing that could have possibly managed to trend above the U.S. election. BECAUSE it’s destiel.

Opinion on the comments in some of the the @ao3topshipsbracket polls: a wildly popular ship is not the same as one that had an actual impact on fandom history. Most popular ships have little to no impact outside their own fandom. Which isn’t to say that ships can’t have impact on their own fandom history, just that they don’t have much impact on general fandom history as a whole.

I understand that the polls aren’t actually measuring fandom history but this got me thinking about what has actually and I think these are the ones:

Spirk - origin of slash fandom shipping and laid the groundwork for fandom/shipping in general

MSR - responsible for the term ‘shipping’ and was the driving force behind the beginning of fandom/shipping on the internet and the creation of fanfiction.net

BTVS - (unfortunately) gave rise to the idea of being ‘anti’ something and ship wars

Harry Potter - most affected fandom on livejournal by the censorship which led to the creation of ao3

Thoughts? I couldn’t think of another fandom/ship that has huge impacts outside of their own fandom.

Strikethrough made people more eager for AO3, but the original inspiration was a for-profit fic archive made by venture capitalists.

The X-Files' big archive was Gossamer. Was MSR really influential in the creation of FFN? I don't remember that.

What ships have a big impact really depends on era and how you're looking at things. K/S and MSR are the obvious ones from long after the fact, yes.

Starsky/Hutch was what really split Media Fandom from literary SF fandom. Star Trek started the split, but it was people getting into a buddy cop show that made it clear that fanfic zine types weren't just about science fiction anymore, not even "mass media" SF in place of book SF.

Bodie/Doyle was the moment people stopped being media fans and started being Slash Fandom specifically. The US fandom had barely even seen the show: they were there for the slash zines.

Jim/Blair fandom gave us sentinel/guide AUs. The Sentinel as a canon sure as fuck didn't.

Ranma fandom set the pattern for every dumb "which girl will he end up with?" fight in anime fandom forever after.

IDK if we can blame 1x2 as opposed to Gundam Wing fandom for inspiring people to many other incomprehensible math equation ships in every anime fandom with dumb number names.

Popslash popped a bunch of prudes' RPF cherries, then LOTRiPS did, then J2 did, then hockey did, then BTS did.

Free! and then Yuri on Ice started the long slide from anime fandoms mostly refusing to leave FFN to newer anime fandoms being on AO3. YOI also lured a lot of people into anime for the first time.

Wangxian got a bunch of "Ewww, no anime ever! Western fandoms 5eva!" people into Asian fandoms at long last. (Whether this was a good thing is a matter of opinion. Hahaha.)

I really think it depends on frame of reference.

The TV shows and movies: Everyone has seen them, they're the canon, everyone knows about it, it's all good. Even the stuff that contradicts the other stuff. Even the episodes and movies everyone hates.

The novels and comics: 2% of the viewing audience have read them. They probably happened between episodes, but they're never ever referred to on TV (except that ONE time on Voyager). Vetted thoroughly (well, since Killing Time at least) and approved by people involved in the show prior to publishing.

The fanfic: These adventures are so numerous and secret, not even the people involved in the show knows about them (erm... with the exceptions of Spirk and Garashir, which have been referenced in Lower Decks and the Lower Decks mobile game. And Ni'Var being named for a poem in an ancient fanfic. And T'Khut. And possibly Una but maybe that's coincidence because after all Una = One). Literally anything can and does happen. Did they happen? Who knows? Who cares? They sometimes get to have sex. Gay sex.

The fan films: Non-canon adventures where the uniforms don't fit so well, sometimes featuring some of the actual Trek actors so not very secret at all. Probably happened in alternate universes with inferior Starfleet tailoring.

The fan manuals: Often more detailed and thoroughly researched than the official ones. Deck by deck plans of starships, instructions on what buttons do what on the bridge and extremely exhaustive backstories for starships only mentioned in passing in official technical books. The people in charge know they exist and shut loads down in the 90's for trying to make money off the Star Trek name. Did they all happen? So long as you don't try to actually compare walking routes on the shows to the floorplans of the Enterprise.

The fan art: At a con Mark Leonard (Sarek) once saw a naughty 'zine illo of naked, chained up Spock. Denise Crosby has been sent Data/Tasha naughty art. People involved in the shows sometimes see it, and are often bewildered by it. Oh, and IDW kept accidently tracing fan art of starships in their comic books because I think they just use Google image search. Did they happen? Yes. Especially the naughty ones.

The A.I. art: endless shitposts of your favourite characters doing anything your caffeine addled, sleep-deprived brain can come up with. Spock taking down the Christmas tree? Kirk cleaning the gutter? Picard having a replicator/soup catastrophe? Riker defeating John Cena at Wrestlemania? Janeway making ends meet by posing for naughty magazines in her Academy days? The people involved in the shows probably actively wish it didn't exist (at least until they find a way to monetise it). Did they happen? Well it's kinda like that time Barclay made out with a holographic copy of Troi...

Itafushi (Jujutsu Kaisen)

It's my number 1 right now, like i love them so much! Their ship is really cute and i love the contrast between them and how they work so well together as friends and more! I'm always giggling and shit when i think about them even if they're doomed by the narrative :(

Zolu (One Piece Live Action/Animanga)

I really liked their dynamic after watching the live action so i mainly ship opla! zolu, but any content of this ship is cute and catches my interest! This ship literally made me write fanfics again lol More Zolu please!

Miyusawa/Misawa (Ace of Diamond)

Miyusawa my beloved ❤️ The first time i watched this anime it had been an instant ship, their chemistry is amazing, the pitcher/catcher dynamic is chef's kiss and just the development of their relationship throughout the show was the highlight for me! I watched everything again recently and i still love this ship very much, fave fave fave :')

Shiguang (Link Click)

They are everything honestly! The angst of it all and their beautiful relationship is just aaaah and the show is INCREDIBLE?? Whether it's friendship or more, they love each other so much. In my head they're canon, i mean after what Lu Guang did, for me that's just proof of his love for Cheng Xiaoshi... they make me ill

Renga (Sk8 the Infinity)

Sk8 was the anime of the season when it came out, the serotonin was just high with this one, especially during covid time. Reki and Langa's friendship was the cutest thing to watch and it was so genuine and then ep 7 happened and the ship just sailed really hard for me! So many cute moments while a beautiful relationship blossomed in front of our eyes!! Love!!

Kazurei (Buddy Daddies)

A new favorite from last year! The premise of the show was so engaging to me when it first came out and even though i knew Kazuki and Rei weren't going to be canon, we were still fed so well? Like Queerplatonic, same-sex parentality, friends to lovers trope??? we got everything and more, especially last episode like omg they're canon idc!!

Dreamling (The Sandman)

Fell in love with this ship instantly with just one episode and little content... the fandom got my back though, i was well fed and shipped them even harder thanks to all the fanarts and fanfics! i want season 2 right now and more of them!!

EmiSue (Dickinson TV)

Not my first wlw ship but definitely my favorite! From the first episode i knew they were soulmates and i wanted more of them together! The show gave us everything we wanted and i'm glad i got to witness it :)

Satosugu (Jujutsu Kaisen)

They're not Itafushi but they are Itafushi in some ways?? like parallels we can't ignore. It's a big ship in the fandom but i'm not as invested as many stsg shippers are, though i really like the ship, i read fanfics about them and i love their story in the first part of season 2! So much angst though...

Nobamaki (Jujutsu Kaisen)

I love them together, i think their ship is cute and has a lot of potential! I don't obssess with them enough and i should read more fanfics, but they're amazing so they stay at the top of my list!

Other favorites but not current (or more like 'not in an obsessed phase' type of way): Villaneve, Hannigram, Narlie, Willex, Thominho, Kagehina, Daisuga, Asanoya, Kuroken (I watched Haikyuu again so yeah), Furuharu, Sanarai...

Old ships that i used to love, but not as much now or just not at all: Sterek, Merthur, Sasunaru, Spirk, Cherik, Romione, Drarry, Johnlock, Stony, Spideypool, Zarry, Datesana and others I might be forgetting...

Spock stood close by the entrance of the bar, observing Jim from across the gold laden room. It was a habit he’d developed whenever possible on shore leave, as chances to observe without notice are limited aboard a starship when the object of your affection is the Captain.

There was something privileged about viewing him as a stranger might. Beautiful. Intriguing. Unexplored. Yet, an unfamiliar person would not possess the knowledge of how his soul took shape when joined with another. They did not know the way he looked upon waking, had not seen him nude, raw, open, as only Spock was allowed. He pitied them deeply. They did not know of the wonder they stood within reach of, yet was not theirs.

Jim was leaning against the bar, an easy smile ebbing and flowing over his face as he listened to Doctor McCoy’s animated retelling of what was, undoubtedly, a thoroughly consequential story. When he laughed, light found its way to his eyes even in the dim, and Spock felt the sound of it within himself despite it not reaching his ears. He watched as a clumsy hand caught on the doctor’s arm before finding his shoulder, grasping it as the pair inclined toward each other, brought glasses to their lips.

Just as the last drop of a shocking orange liquid disappeared, amber eyes found Spock as if there was nothing in the space between them. He kept their gaze locked, hands resting at the small of his back. The new smile that spread over Jim’s features was warm. Giant and unyielding. Lopsided. True.

His hand on McCoy’s shoulder flexed, prompting the doctor to turn and find Spock standing there himself, rising alongside the other but quickly falling behind in the crowd. Spock watched fondly as Jim made his way. He watched him rest a gentle hand on each surface he passed for balance, muttering polite apologies over shoulders, between the bodies he pushed himself through until finally they stood face to face.

“You made it,” he murmured, looking up at Spock in something akin to awe. He wavered slightly on his feet, reaching for Spock’s arms and wrapping warm fingers around them at the elbow.

Spock raised a singular brow. “Doctor McCoy has no doubt been the one to convince you not to trust my word.”

“Guilty as charged!”

Spock shifted his gaze to the doctor as he burst through a final line of people in pursuit of them. Somehow, he had managed to secure another drink for himself along the way.

“Your cynicism in regard to me is, as always, without merit.”

“But it is fun,” he retorted, raising the green beverage between them in emphasis. One finger uncurled from around the narrow glass and attempted to point at the tip of Spock’s nose. “See? Your face. Fun.”

Spock let a breath part his lips, both brows rising and falling as he turned back to Jim. His focus had found the collar of Spock’s shirt, one hand having traversed the line of his arm and following it over the curve of his shoulder. He traced along the seam of skin and fabric, and Spock pulled a great deal of self control from his depths to resist letting his eyes fall shut, or forcibly bringing the touch back when it began sliding away again. Jim’s eyes remained trained to the movement, as if he were a mere observer himself and not the perpetrator.

“All th' same to me,” McCoy announced, and Spock’s eyes were back on him, having momentarily forgotten his presence. “You’re not here, you’re all he talks about. You are here, he’s stuck on you like honey to a biscuit.”

Spock stared at him. However, the doctor appeared undeterred by any perceived judgement about his choice of phrasing. He simply raised his glass to take another drink, hissing at the taste of whatever alcohol it contained, so Spock returned his gaze to Jim.

It was difficult not to react to the vision of him like this. There was something loose in his posture, an unbidden blush gracing his edges- no doubt an effect of the alcohol. It sat, variegated and rose colored, around his ears. At his temples. The backs of his knuckles. Warm, pink, his, closer and closer still…

Spock put a hand to Jim’s chest to stop him. He seemed surprised, as if he was merely falling forward rather than leaning up with clear intent to seal their lips together.

“S’true,” he slurred, severely delayed, his gaze dropping to Spock’s mouth and drawing his own bottom lip between his teeth. He let it drag free and Spock watched as the blood beneath separated, flashed to white before returning to its usual pigment. He leaned even closer, the hand on Spock’s arm jumping the gap to slide over his hip. “Can’t help it. You’re always…” His eyes finally lifted, an almost bashful expression flickering into them. His smile simmered to something private and warm. “Always on my mind.”

Spock, in a moment of daring, allowed one hand to close around Jim’s bare wrist in response. The contact between them thrummed readily with a familiar energy, their ever-present bond strengthening without effort.

As you are on mine, taluhk.

Jim leaned into him with even more insistence, something Spock had come to expect. A latent function similar to breathing, or the beating of a heart. Just as naturally, Jim would pull closer to him until the parts of them which were not touching were brought together. Spock very nearly stumbled as he compensated for the added weight against him, his other arm coming around Jim’s back. Whether to steady him or hold him close, he was not certain.

“A-hem.”

Jim’s shoulder stayed against Spock’s chest as he turned partially to look at McCoy. He snorted a laugh and Spock felt it vibrate against him, pulling the sensation within himself, savoring it.

“Sorry, Bones,” Jim said quietly, and even had the good nature to sound as though he meant it.

“I’d just appreciate it if you’d let me leave the room for once, is all.”

Jim reached a fumbling hand out to cup the side of McCoy’s face breifly.

“Your face, though, Bones. S’fun.”

The doctor glared at his own words being used against him and jerked his head away, but the expression lost its hardness as Jim turned back to Spock to press lips firmly to his cheek. It was uncoordinated, dry, lower than it should have been in his haste. Spock’s hand between Jim’s shoulders curled into a fist as heat sprung to his face.

“Jim-”

The man listed even further and huffed a laugh against Spock’s jaw, sliding an arm around his middle, and in each place their skin touched he felt an almost overwhelming sense of contentment that threatened to overtake him. Spock found just enough discernment to withdraw the arm between them and brace it against Jim’s shoulder again, fixing him with a stern look.

“James. We are in public.”

“Yeah, which includes me.”

But Jim wasn’t listening to McCoy, even as he grumbled something about them owing him a drink. His eyes were half closed, his face darkening a remarkable number of shades, and though Spock’s hand was still braced against him he did not relent. Spock was vaguely aware of the doctor taking his leave back in the direction of the bar.

“We’ll apologize later,” Jim whispered.

“I will not,” Spock answered, voice even despite being more than aware of Jim’s fingers seeking out the hem of his shirt. As his touch slipped beneath, however, he could not prevent the quick intake of breath it provoked. Behind them was only the wall, nobody to witness the hand pressing flush against his skin, yet their proximity with the rest of the world burned him almost intolerably.

Almost.

Jim hummed, satisfied, eyes twinkling with unrestrained glee. Spock's heart ached. Jim Kirk, so warm and so open on any given day, taken by the effects of alcohol was an affront to all else good in the universe. How could anything compare?

“Should,” he was saying, and Spock blinked. “S’your fault.”

Fingers climbed higher. Spock raised a brow, trying not to let the sensation carry him away.

“I am not the one who inebriated you."

“No,” he admitted in a sing-song way, and Spock was nearly reduced to ash when Jim’s free hand came up to touch the side of his face. A part of him wanted to scan the bar for eyes on them, but another part, perhaps the one that had missed his touch so greatly, told him it did not matter. They were among strangers, and would be gone by morning.

“But,” Jim continued, “you did call me James.”

The corners of Spock's lips twitched upward. “Did I?”

Jim’s eyes met his, rising from where his fingers dragged over the space below his chin. He grinned, then nodded.

“Mhm. Did.”

“It is your name,” Spock pointed out.

“Sounds best when you say it, though," he whispered, splaying his hand over Spock’s chest and sliding it lower. He kept their eyes locked, watching Spock’s face until the Vulcan reached between them and stopped the progression downward. He felt a surge of his own awe at the way Jim’s pupils dilated, opening up to him like starless reservoirs. Infinite. His to traverse.

“James,” he said again. Pointed. Frim. He raised a brow, tightening his hold around the man's wrist. “Not here.” I cannot do everything I would like to you in this room, wuh’rak.

Jim was tugging against his grip half heartedly, his other hand still skimming below Spock’s shirt and dragging fingernails softly over flesh. He flexed his jaw in playful annoyance, and Spock could feel the barrage of wants overlapping each other so persistently it was almost dizzying.

“Then where, Mr. Spock?”

The tips of their fingers touched in a chaste kiss that quickly turned molten with the thoughts passing through it, burning up his arm and straight through to the soles of his feet.

“Anywhere, Captain.”

STRANGE NEW WORLDS | S2E1 "The Broken Circle"

So disappointed and sad by SNW S2 E1, the fuck with Chapel being such a "key focus" character in this as the next super white love interest no few actually sane, decent trekkies ask for (and whom Spock already canonically denied in Naked Time without an inkling of ANY feeling directed towards her whatsoever...)

Such a weak start to the season for so many reasons, very weak episode, weak composition (almost rudimentary) nigh Discovery S1 flavoured structural engineering and writing (hurls). (And no, I am not saying anything against the actors themselves, they did fine with what they were written to do...)

Such a commoditised Spock. He is just made to be the spectacle star elephant at the circus; crass idiots abusing his "characterisation" as a pay-per-view zoo performance on the next "What Else Can Spock Do That's Un-Spock?" show. Getting away with substanceless, cardboard thin shit so long as they sprinkle out the every-20-minutes Nostalgia Card (oh Vulcan Lyre this, fake-ass "Spirk" hint joke on the SDCC interview that) that they know people will eat the shit out of like mindless animals (cuz they fucking do). Crying over Chapel TWICE (not M'Benga mind you since he leaves him to potentially die on the transporter pad, no muss haHA), and "Known to drink bloodwine - RAA RAA RAA" my fucking ass. So sick of Spock made to do what he isn't, instead of teaching to us more on who he is…

But mostly - most grotesquely that marked this episode as actually despicable that NO ONE is talking about that is the most OBVIOUS FUCKING ISSUE IN THE EPISODE is the utter racial negligence done to M'Benga (by fucking Spock no less, and forget the fact that Uhura was a complete throwaway in this episode and still ever the same "glorified space receptionist" with maybe 5 more words than usual despite its fucking afterthought of a "in memory of" bullshit with no revision at all...) and how so many of you didnt bat a single eye nor give a single damn on the most blatantly filmed/spliced/edited/directed racist shit in this episode...

And to fucking call "this" an episode dedicated to Nichelle Nichols...

GAY SPOCK REAL OR FAKE PLEASE READ

i haven’t been an active tumblr user in about 3 years but SNW and the whole gay spock debate has been occupying enough space in my mind that i felt the need to inflict my opinion onto you all.

as a spirker myself, i’m not at all denying that the het romance arcs SNW is pushing for jim and spock are by no means my favorite. i dearly dearly wish that we would’ve gotten at least SOME queercoding from SNW this season, but i’m also not as disappointed as some of you are with the choices the SNW team has made for spock’s character. i’ve seen quite a few people begging for gay spock (bless u all) and canon spirk from SNW, which is unquestionably the ideal outcome for the series — and given the way both the writers and actors have reacted to and welcomed fan opinions and questions about where the jim/spock dynamic is heading, i don’t think it’s unreasonable at all for us to be optimistic about the show’s direction. if sybok can be in a queer relationship, then we’ve already gone miles past existing TOS canon in terms of queer rep.

admittedly, SNW has issues (ortegas show us ur girlfriend and the lesbian flag hanging in ur quarters!!! we all know it’s there!!), but i struggle to believe that the het romance arcs for jim and spock were written with the intention of convincing fans to ~let go of spirk~ or anything along those lines. in fact, i think the biggest issue that trek fans are having with SNW is wanting it to deliver on all the subtext and queercoding that existed in TOS on an implicit level explicitly and immediately. SNW is a prequel. it’s whole job is to set up and develop the relationships that appear in TOS; and it does an amazing job of this for the most part, especially in giving the female characters like una, christine, and t’pring traits other than crippling gene roddenberry syndrome. what i’m trying to say is that the SNW writers are doing a good job. yes, even (ESPECIALLY) with spock.

i get why people are protective of his character, i am too, but i don’t understand the lack of faith and, honestly, lack of viewing comprehension, that i’m seeing from self proclaimed spock fans. if you were expecting SNW to give us fully formed Nimoy-Spock within the first two seasons, then i’m sorry, but you’re a little bit of an idiot. a lot of you both don’t understand the purpose of the show (in general and in relation to spock’s development) and don’t value the importance of long form storytelling. in fact, in my ideal world, spirk wouldn’t even be together by the end of SNW. part of the value of the k/s dynamic in TOS was spock’s internal struggle with his feelings for jim, a struggle that defines his character, actions, and life throughout TOS and the movies. this is a struggle that isn’t resolved until midway through the movies, and it wouldn’t be doing justice to the canon that created spirk to have their relationship evolve into romance before the events of TOS.

spirk is, and always will be a long form story which derives its value from the fact that it is a Very Very slow burn. for the relationship to retain its value without being watered down by reinterpretation, it needs to have all the turns, pitfalls, and pining that it did in the original canon. although it’s entirely possible that the SNW writers have no plans of canonizing spirk, it’s also entirely possible that their plans are just a little more long term than what most of the community wants right now. i would far prefer a spirk that begins in 3 seasons of steadily evolving homoerotic friendship than one that jumps the gun and results in an unsatisfying and underbaked depiction of a relationship that deserves to be done justice.

TLDR: be patient!!! stop acting like SNW is actively taking spirk out behind the shed and shooting it!! I actually liked this one less than the first one, even though it's much more popular. I also felt like they had a lot less budget than for the one before.

one of the things I really liked though, was that dr marcus was not a love interest and kirk even left saavik alone. I really love this new version of kirk (even though canonically he would've been with this antonia woman from generations at that time). it's almost as if one particular relationship made him rethink things…

there were some quite nice spirk-y scenes in the sense that they were very flirty the whole time imo, but in general not a lot of scenes between spock and kirk alone. but here are a few that were definitely something: spock giving kirk his birthday present and "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times - message, spock?". insert kirk smirk here. then in spocks quarters, his throaty "jim" that I cannot see in a friendship way since the turbolift scene in and the children shall lead anymore (even though it was much less throaty this time) and then saying "I have been and always shall be yours". and in both these scenes spock implicates that he regrets kirk took the promotion and went back to earth, which is also the reason they are not spending time together anymore. this can be interpreted as friends, but it wouldn't be me if I didn't see it in a different light. to me, they seem like two people who have broken up amicably a while ago (as opposed to the motion picture where they seemed like they had had a messy breakup). like they were just in different places in their lives but still don't want to close that door for good. spock also seems pretty open with his emotions in their private moments in this movie. and you know we love lowkey smirking spock :)) later spock's "be safe captain" - "yes WE will make sure to be safe". and of course kirk kicking several lower deckers away to get to dying spock. so in the end, there was quite a bit!

only the death scene was a bit lackluster to me. I know people love this scene, but somehow it didn't touch me like I thought it would. it felt like the actors knew spock was gonna return in the next movie and it was not too well written imo. it also makes no sense to me why saavik (a vulcan!) cried at spocks funeral but everyone else was pretty ok. I mean kirk choked back a few tears but in general his reaction was pretty tame. it would've been more kirk like (and to my liking) to smash everything. you know, like he did almost every time he lost a random woman he had just met... in general, I didn't fully understand why spock was sacrificing himself in the first place, in the sense that I have no idea what he actually did in the chamber.

to end on a positive note though, I enjoyed the concept as well as some scenes, to me it just could've been better executed as a whole.

a (draft) list of every time Mr. Spock had an interaction that might be construed as romantic

*this version will be deleted when (if) i fix this list up with some gifs and screenshots*

so, i have decided to compile some independent evidence on a few points that have been in (more than usual) contention lately in the fandom. my focus, as always, is tos. this one is a bit more controversial in that while i very much understand and respect that many fans see Spock as gay and/or ace, i personally feel like there's canon evidence for his being bi/pan and interested on the segs even outside of Pon Farr.

my interpretation is that both spock and kirk are bi/pan, though kirk has a marked preference towards women (see the rodenberry footnote. the love of his life just turned out not to be one. and he wouldn't have it any other way) and spock leans towards men (an interpretation not backed up statistically by the list, but who cares). again, this is my opinion, and the beauty of fandom is that it's in the eye of the beholder.

previously i made a draft list of the evidence for kirk being into men (excepting spirk evidence) in tos. the goal is to have one on all of the references to chapel's feelings for spock too, but that will be more work so maybe in a few days? never trust any promises i make on this blog

three important disclaimers before we begin: kirk, chapel and uhura will not be featured.

the reasons being, in kirk's case... *gestures vaguely at the entirety of tos*; in chapel's because i intend to go into her feelings for spock and how he reacts to them on-screen separately; and in uhura's because iirc there's only one instance of her flirting with him outside of their duets (where it can be construed as part of the performance), and it's not only in the beginning of the series, where it might be seen as Early Installment Weirdness, but also in The Naked Time, the episode where everyone goes crazy. also, uhura flirts with Everyone in this show, and i say good for her.

but enough with the preambles and on with the list:

the what the fuck?!? ones:

Leila Kalomi (This Side of Paradise) - this episode is baffling to me -- did spock and leila have something going on in the past that he ended because logic and rejection of humanity and putting starfleet first? or was it one-sided? spock says it was the first time he ever felt happy, but he acts so antithetically to who and what spock is that i personally find it hard to believe. maybe he just thought that was how happiness felt, and later on he discovers he was wrong (moments like the end of Amok Time, "this simple feeling", the beginning of WoK etc.). anyways cool motive, still drug-facilitated s.a.. big fan of sex pollen fics and that quote spock says about self-made purgatories though

T'Pring (Amok Time) - going strictly by the episode, vulcan biology... the biology of vulcans made spock want her, but he feels humiliated by the loss of logic. her reasons for not wanting him are two-fold: she simply likes stonn better (in that roundabout way vulcans admit to feelings), and she doesn't want to marry an absentee living legend, which, fair. the fact that spock's not a full vulcan must play some part in it too. but there's plenty left for interpretation. they are distant at the moment, but have they always been? how long has she been into stonn? why did they not divorce more amicably previously? i could go on forever, but i this is already too long. point being, even if it doesn't gel with my personal headcanon, there's nothing really wrong with snw's interpretation of this relationship.

the lighter ones:

Romulan Commander (The Enterprise Incident) - this woman is My Commander. I would follow her to the ends of the galaxy for the imagery she has blessed my eyes with. this being said, i think the important bit here is their conversation in the turbolift at the end. spock is not one to lie out of politeness. he could have said nothing, but he used those contorted phrases of his to imply he was a willing participant, and liked it. and she picks up what he puts down. also at some point kirk complains spock is taking too long and it cuts to them in her quarters, implying that spock got kinda into it (also, jealous, jimmy?)

Kollos (Is There No Truth in Beauty?) - this one's debatable, but i'd argue there was some attraction there, in a brainy way. smart is sexy, and all. dr. jones certainly thought so, from her reactions

Adam (The Way to Eden) - Pacifist Discount Roger Daltrey Hippie Musician In A Monokini Seduces Rebellious Vulcan was the tabloid headline

Droxine (The Cloud Minders) - insert cringey line about extreme female beauty. how the seven-year cycle became public knowledge given the drama of amok time is a mystery to me. the attraction flew out of the window real quick when the planet's situation made itself know though. anyway i shipped her with vanna.

Zarabeth (All Our Yesterdays) - i... don't get how logic can be time-locked? is the st universe secretly like a civ game? takes me out of this episode way too much. anyways he almost went full warrior vulcan and stayed in the past with her

Surak (The Savage Curtain) - spock, he's your ancestor! and at this point any intellectual crush is pretty quickly superseded by how thirsty he is for That Human Booty Intuition

Not hate but a complaint on my gallacrafts for theme 11 I'm fucking gay. I got an anon asking why I made the lesbian flag & put the phrase I'm fucking gay & i that should have just done lesbian although I had actually made both but it was on the part 2 bc i had a limit of 10 pictures.

Gallavich most definitely, they hit all my likes in a ship plus they're canon & married to boot! #spoiled 😆

Yeah I started getting back into drawing with makinng flowers for mutual's birthday 🥰 I've also made little mascots of baby animals for my niece's baby shower

10. What’s the an art piece you’ve drawn that came out completely differently than you expected?

Probably the GGE2022 for Macy. I had some other ideas. Also their poses were gonna be different like it was either the back of them looking at snow or tumbled into the snow on top of an ny roof top but still not the best at figure drawing so i just did the best of my abilities 😄

Faces, hair, blushing & colouring maybe?

17. What’s your favourite art piece you’ve drawn?

I would say my good omens au I simply adorethe little details I put into the drawing. I referenced Mickey's outfit in Ian's delete scene dream. Ian's outfit is 7x10 just in darker colours. I loved being able to create Ian's ombre eyes by colour picking Cameron's hazel ones. Ian's hair shading. The heart wings & being able to creat the wing texture on the angel wing. AND their signature shows with the timberland & bright read air forces!!! I had such a fun time drawing this 🥰 Also it was my 100,000 post lol

18. What is one thing you’d like to tell people about your art that they might not know?

My gallavich art is the first time I've been colouring my drawings. When I drew a lot in high school I would just do the line art & was too hesitant to colour them.

19. What inspires or motivates you to create for fandom?

Definitely you guys! Being able to make you guys smile. As well as your creations & the creating events 💕🖌

I do like to crawl up into a hunched ball on the lounge couch or my bed (which should stop bad for posture lol) Then I do enjoy playing YouTube video essays about internet history/horror games I'd never play or movie reactions.

Also, I am more of an artist who researches & and works with many references. I got a whole lotta unclosed tabs of Ian & Mickey, body poses & clothes that i forgot to close lol.

hm, the only thing coming to mind rn is spones? spock and bones are lovely but i really just like their friendship and the way they push each other’s buttons. but like in a friend way. also i’m a spirk girlie. now, I HAVE read kirk/spock/bones before, and while I prefer k/s I did like that. both spock and bones adore jim so much and I can see the dynamic working well.

21. What are your thoughts on crack ships?

I think they’re hilarious lmao. canon is not the end all be all for me, and i love when fandom spins something out of nothing (provided it doesn’t take over the whole tag and prevent me from seeing other stuff i want to see). an example: about a year ago or so my dash was full of kristalia (kristoph/dahlia, ace attorney) posts with them in a mutually resentful lavender marriage both trying to fuck (over?) phoenix. i love two haters getting together out of mutual spite for a common enemy. combine their unhinged minds and you get sheer chaos. it was incredible.

22. Popular character you hate?

i’m struggling so hard here because lately i’ve found characters i dislike to be more boring than actively bad (i’m so sorry but worf falls into this category for meeeeeee i just don’t care about klingon politics.) If we’re talking active hatred okay uhhh throwing it back to my OG fandoms, I cannot stand amy pond (doctor who). karen gillian is a good actress—this isn’t a critique of her it’s the scripts. I found her relentless flirting with the doctor frustrating as hell. seemed clear to me she and rory did not have an open relationship and she wanted to cheat. it made me uncomfortable. rory’s so sweet I just felt terrible he got stuck w someone who can’t be honest w him. I also don’t like how moffat’s writing made river song’s story tie into the ponds’. I enjoy river, and felt that everything w her being their kid was clumsy. I preferred having her origins a mystery.

Three ships: Drarry (HP), Maxiel (F1), Spirk (TOS)

First ship: the first time I was outraged that two characters did not get together in canon was Anne/Diana.

Last movie: Frankenstein (1931). With the 12yo, who enjoyed it, and whom we will be showing Young Frankenstein (1974) next.

Currently reading: Go Down Together by Jeff Guinn. I'm hip-deep in a Bonnie & Clyde / Barrow gang research-hole–slash-hyperfixation right now. The book is fine. If I had world enough and time, I would instead be reading the entire 948-page FBI file on the Barrow gang, made available online (thank you, FOIA). I paused Wolf Hall to pursue this avenue, and will shortly go back to it.

Last thing I wrote: this drarry microfic and my contribution to the HP Law of Attraction Fest.

Currently writing: anon fic for unnamed fest

Favourite subject in school: any foreign language.

Do you have kids? Two! (Only one of them can handle James Whale horror films. The other one is afraid of the Arthur version of The Tell-Tale Heart.)

Do you use sarcasm a lot? I used to, but then I found out that I was a really poor judge of .. I guess the trajectory of my sarcasm? Where it would land, basically. And what I'd hoped would be witty and suave might just as well be cruel in the end. I enjoy sarcasm in other people but rarely use it myself.

What sports do you play/have you played? As a child I joined a municipal soccer league and was literally laughed off the team.

What's the first thing you notice about people? Their.... mien, I guess? This question confuses me.

Any special talents: I can sing "Landslide" in front of other people without crying.

What are your hobbies? Reading, writing and avoiding writing, knitting, tarot, looking at things and talking about them. Currently I'm learning about the Barrow Gang (as mentioned) and I just started studying Uzbek.

Sorrowjoy I find them super compelling. The idea of The Sorrow suffering losing The Joy while she's still there is haunting. Coupled with the Boss feeling like every bad thing in the world is her fault and how she was forced to hurt everyone she loved... OUGH. I could talk about that a lot

Unpopular opinion I don't think The Sorrow dying to save Ocelot was as noble as some make it out to be. idk man. If The Boss tried to assassinate me I'd just let her kill me also/jk

I want to go over Eva's appearance in mgs4 again and pick it apart to see wtf is going on. I also find it very funny that Snaked apparently did not remove his boots or pants during sex. Why was that the one time they decided not to show Snake ass?

Don't know the popular opinions, so here's a fun fact: Apparently they were supposed to make out in the mountain shack scene but Snaked's mocap actor froze up and inspired them to change it?? Would've totally changed the vibe of the scene imo

Why are you following a twitter called Yaoi Polls??? 💀💀💀 lmao anyway, I get archive panic rather easily, so I don't really get into media unless it's a short canon or I rode the wave as it was starting. Like, those book series with 9 novels and counting? Or manga/anime like One Piece and the 16358 volumes/episodes? I just can't. I get too overwhelmed by that. However, I am intrigued by Star Trek. I want to join the Spirk navy lmao but I don't know where to start? There's too much canon. Help.

I'm following yaoi polls because I am a pacifist and hate war but crave violence. And because it gives me a chance to talk about my ships. But mostly it's for the violence.

Also, okay, there is too much Star Trek canon. And I am perhaps either a very wrong person to ask or perhaps a very right person to ask because I have.... dodged a lot of the Star Trek cnaon?

Like, if you like Trek, you're a real Trekkie, but if it was possible to be a fake fan... I would... dangle perilously close?

So, instead of giving you advice, I'm gonna tell you how I did it withotu being overwhelmed.

First, I got into star trek by watching hte "AOS" films, which are the three star trek films starring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk that came out starting in 2009. Three easy films to kind of dip you into the worldbuilding. These all feature characters (versions of characters) from The Original Series. They're "modernized" versions, so not necessarily the truest versions of themselves, but it's sort of like an intro course where you learn the basics and then if you go deeper, things get corrected or given nuance later on.

I decided, "I like these dudes, and I especially like Spock, I'm going to create a SCU--Spock Cinematic Universe."

So, I had tried watching the original series before and I'll admit, parts of it... aren't great? Some of it is problematic, some of it is just weird, and some of it is straight up boring.

TO kind of... help myself along, since I wasn't terribly invested in TOS yet, I looked up a few guides of "MUST WATCH TOS episodes" and a few "HEre's episodes you can skip." I compared notes, made my own ranking system sort of culminating htem all together (if one guide says definitely skip but another one says it's kinda fun, I know to give it a shot but not feel terrible if I zone out). TOS is VERY episodic, so going, "Huh, thi sisn't doing it for me," won't fuck you over MOST Of the time. But the guides help you figure out if actually you're gonna miss a huge moment of lore or spirk or whatever.

Most lists included which episodes of the animated series (based on TOS) you should bother with, that list is very sparse.

And then at this point, if you enjoyed it, youc an look into watching shit you missed out on or delving into novels (which I don't think are canon) or comics.

DO watch all of the subsequent movies, the first one is boring as fuck for a long while, but some of the ones after are AMAZING.

For a long while, this is where I put down Star Trek.

But then Discovery was introduced with a NEW Spock sibling and then SPock himself is in it. So I wathced the first two seasons (and intend on watching the rest) and then Strange New Worlds has ONE season... with Spock in it. So... I watched that.

And that's how I took a huge fucking canon and went "I want the parts with HIM in it" and ignored hte rest. Technically, I know Spock makes appearances in other series but like... none as Spock-centric as these.

I do intend on watching more Trek with time (TNG intrigues me, Deep Space Nine intrigues me) but like... I think Star Trek is very much what you want it ot be.

Sometimes, you're gonna be left clueless abotu references to past baddies or aliens or whatever (or sometimes FUTURE baddies or aliens) but like... it's fine? From what I've seen, ST canon can contradict itself or sort of... not mean anything sometimes, so like, take what you want, leave the rest. It'll be fine.
