😅 What's a story or scene you've created that you're a smidge embarrassed exists?

there's multiple lol ausgshdhsgggsgsh I say that cringe culture is dead but I never truly effectively killed cringe

From my unposted Werewedzel and 3Adv + Werewedzel fics, to the stuff like my many many fluffy Kyle and Larry fics (one which I can't look at anymore because of a critique I received that made me very insecure ausghsgs (dw it was somebody irl it wasn't anybody here)), I have a lot of cringe-

🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?

Ok so all that stuff you learned in school? Throw it out the diddly darn window (but save it later for the editing process, maybe. Look, the English language isn't perfect and occasionally you just have to Return To Monky so that you can make it sound good like in your head.)

Don't be afraid to just straight up cut-and-paste a whole chunk of your writing if it just "isn't sounding right" because maybe you can make it sound different! It's the art equivalent of "you've been staring at this too long, go take a break and come back to it later." Cut the section and paste it in like,, another document (or move it to the bottom of the fic in a method I like to call The Pit) and rewrite it purely from memory.

😬 Which of your fics would you be most horrified for friends, family, or coworkers to stumble upon?

Depends, I can't think of anything off the top of my head. Werewedzel, probably? Literally only out of fear of furry shaming (despite the fact I am very openly accepting that yeah I am a furry lol)

Also Harumi’s backstory for why she likes Garmadon and hates the ninja including Lloyd, it completely makes sense cuz she was a child that over heard that the ninja didn’t do sh-t and Garmadon saved the city so it makes sense why she hates the ninja and believes Garmadon should be Ninjago’s leader, and since it happened when she was young she didn’t think things through, she didn’t think about it from the ninja perspective and especially didn’t think about it from Lloyd’s perspective cuz she was a child, kids don’t tend to think about the other person’s perspective on things, so I think it makes sense and it’s really good 👌 also this is Ninjago’s first main female villain, all the other ones were either second in command or were in a crew that worked for a bigger villain so yeah that’s cool

“Don’t you guys have any idea what she’s doing? She’s resurrecting Garmadon! Lord Garmadon!” Yeah no sh-t Kai, the name of their gang is “Sons of Garmadon”, of course they know and of course they’re ok with it why do think they’re helping her?

“Then it’s a good thing the Quiet One isn’t a bad guy but a bad girl” It doesn’t matter that Pythor, Chen, Morro, and Garmadon had dicc, what matters is that the greater evil didn’t listen to them dipsh-t.

Harumi screams a lot, like Princess Peach/Damsel-in-distress amount of high pitch screaming and I’m surprised Lloyd or the other ninja haven’t told her to shut up at one point.

hey guys,,, would you believe me if I said that, a month before I made this blog, I was actually adamantly writing an entire Danny Phantom rewrite in google docs

it is 5-6 google doc files and it’s all unorganized dialogue, notes, and environmental/character design aspects. The rewrite itself was very self-indulgence but i truly got immersed in the world of Amity Park and I put in a lot devotion to it.

i literally told no one about this before because I kind of forgot about it (the last edit was in early August) but after revising it, it is... extremely long. I shit you not, each document had around 30-40 pages of unformatted text

some interesting aspects upon revisiting:

it’s a start-to-end rewrite. more serialized. very self indulgent and based off my own headcanons 

it was very ghost-central, danny interacts with the ghosts a lot more than in the original. there was a lot more world building and science behind the ghost zone. more history about ghosts and amity park’s relationship with them. more stuff about how halfas “work”

running gag where in almost every episode, Valerie comes and shoots a ghost violently 

no romance subplot

dash and paulina had more prominent roles?

it is pretty angsty. i mean how could it not

Spooky the Owl was a recurring character 

I had a whole document trying to list out and explain my ideal environmental design aspects in terms of animation/ art direction and capturing a more “spooky” environment within Amity Park:

eventually i just, stopped because i stopped and wondered “why am i even writing all of this. theres no way i could every present this as a fic or somehow gain the rights to the show and make it like this”, so ill show you some of the snippets right here!

anyways here is the text for the “environmental/setting/art direction/WhaTEVER YOU CALL IT” redesign for my danny phantom rewrite a few months back 

I actually made numerous sketches in August to demonstrate this because i was originally going to accompany the text with visual examples of each spooky component I wanted to incorporate, since it was inspired by jayrockin's amazing ghost physics post, which I suggest you check out yourself ...but i found out quickly that was too ambitious and I didn't have the stamina for that. However, I’ll still accompany a few rough sketches. It was good practice for me to try to bring about my ideas for the art direction of a show. 

Keep in mind this was my personal taste to fit my personal preferred narrative (i wanted it to be a bit more spookier/dramatic, to truly go along the plot)

I've seen a lot of people redesigning the characters, which is awesome, but I haven’t seen a lot about redesigning the environment

It can still have that cartoony look that's reminiscent of the original style of the show, but just incorporate the environment differently. How the characters look is one thing, but in animation you also have to think about how the characters move, behave, and sound like. Timing is extremely important in an animated series, and that goes along with how much drama/suspense is produced

They can still look cartoony as heck with exaggerated proportions but it's the way they're animated that really shows what kind of world they live in.” “A good example of this is Gravity falls. It has a simple cartoony style for its characters but they still do a good job at showcasing horror by how it's animated: ”

I'm talking about wider range of facial expressions, intense close-up shots, silhouettes and shadows junk!! MAKE IT SPOOKY. CAPTURE THAT FEAR! I want to feel SHIVERS when i see these characters! ((it wouldve made more sense if i had finished illustrations to show this))

👻 “ imagine if all the ghosts antagonists had their own leitmotif/boss battle themes, like in Steven Universe. that would truly bring about the memorability of their character and immediately tell the audience what their personality is like. It’s no wonder Ember is one of the most memorable ghosts, she has her own song”

👻 “ Soundtrack and movement and setting: everything has to work together to build up that good ol’ suspense! I want it to feel like there truly is something sinister around.”

👻 “spooky and eerie background noises? whispers in the background? make the ghosts have echo-y faded voices? and damn right i want to hear creepy circus music or creepy children singing in the background!!!”

👻 Have the ghosts move/animated in ways that seem suspenseful or mysterious. Make them feel like ghosts, add more flow into their movements! Make them feel a little less human…........

👻 Dont just stop at the ghosts though, the setting of Amity park in general should feel a little unsettling …

👻 If I were to redesign the show to incorporate a spookier, more ghost-like environment, it takes is spookier lighting and shading for the environment to completely change. (i loved those neon colors, but be smart with color choice when you can!)

👻 Dramatic contrasting lighting? Flickering lights? Have the characters shaded in a way that really showcases the mood? More wispier, transparent ghosts? 👻 for all the ghosts who have firey glowy hair, make their hair look all nice and glowy (have it resemble fire a bit more), with relative lighting and all that. it would be so much prettier and spookier. in addition, have their eyes glow whenever possible!

👻 Play with some common ghost trope characters perhaps? It’d be nice to just take full advantage of that fine paranormal activity and do some interesting interpretations on previous horror tropes, but in a unique animated format.

All these things could easily and completely change the atmosphere of a cartoon! And I love that. The cool thing about animated things is that you can draw out some things that you can’t necessarily reproduce in live action horror. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT!

It's more than just redesigning the characters and rewriting the plot, it's about redesigning the whole heckin environment! Go full out! You might not agree with me on all these points but I just wanted to share my ideas on how to more effectively incorporate an environment about ghosts in a cartoon. 

My animation skills are pretty limited and I'm no pro, but just imagine: animation is a really neat medium to do go about such an interesting setting like ghosts, you can make it so much more dramatic in so many ways!

In my extremely convoluted Danny Phantom rewrite, there was a scene where everyone cheers for Danny as their new town hero for the first time and he's just? so? honored??? 

danny's never been so widely cheered upon before and he just gets really embarassed before floating away (the big green blush is canon in the rewrite btw, it's canon for most ghosts). That lil scene was so sweet that I actually sketched out his pose for it last summer, haha!
