Right: Édouard Manet (French, 1832-1883) • The Tragic Actor (Rouvière as Hamlet) • 1866 •
Left: Diego Velázquez (Spanish, 1599-1650) • Portrait of a famous actor at the time of Philip IV (Pablillos Valladolid) • c. 1635
The French painter Édouard Manet, on a trip to Spain in 1865, wrote about the portrait to Henri Fantin-Latour: Perhaps the most astonishing piece of painting that has ever been made is the picture entitled Portrait of a famous actor at the time of Philip IV (Pablillos Valladolid). The background disappears. It is air that surrounds the man, dressed entirely in black and full of life.
Clearly, Manet's painting is a sort of omage to Velázquez. Both are portraits of actors, though Manet's actor looks remarkably like Manet! The interesting twist in the Manet lies in the letter M that is formed by both the shadow and the sword. In the Velázquez portrait, the letter is a V that could represent either the artist's or the subject's initial. Manet's treatment of the letter detail shows not only creative prowess but also a sharp wit. No pun intended.
