Buck Scientists Identify How Dietary Restriction Slows Brain Aging & Increases Lifespan
Restricting calories is known to improve health and increase lifespan, but much of how it does so remains a mystery, especially in regard to how it protects the brain. Buck scientists have uncovered a role for a gene called OXR1 that is necessary for the lifespan extension seen with dietary restriction and is essential for healthy brain aging. “When people restrict the amount of food that they…

i genuinely think it should be illegal to purposefully give someone food or drink with something they didn't ask for. no adding dairy milk, no lying about gluten, no giving regular vs diet soda, no meat in vegetarian/vegan food, none of it. that shit can make people so sick, and in some cases its literally life threatening. even if it doesn't make someone ill it's still a huge violation of their boundaries. there's a million reasons why people have dietary restrictions and it is not your job to deem them worthy of accomodating or not

Okay, but has anyone mentioned yet that Grover is also a vegetarian so when he says “Thanks for the emotional abuse and the cheeseburgers,” he’s like doubling down on Ares’ shittiness?? Ares even mentions how practically all satyrs are vegetarian or vegan when he said all they do is eat tofu. I bet when Grover said that at the end, he was cursing him out so thoroughly on his head, Ares could hear it. “Thanks for the emotional abuse and cheeseburgers you @&!$ing $!@? and you didn’t even get a %£#!ing salad. Oooo you got a big &$%! plate of fries? Whoop-dee &!#@ing doo!! What kind of #&*!ing god are you? A piss poor @#!$ing !%@$ one. Athena’s owl my €@%#.” That’s probably why Ares didn’t bother with the paper towels.

still trying to sort through the layers of this ableism & antifatness but it’s particularly painful that society treats eating gluten-free as something rooted in a desire for weight loss when
i gained more weight in the year after figuring out i have celiac than any other year of my life
including going up two shirt sizes
& going from being read as (small)fat but not having any access issues around size separate from mobility aids to being outside the bounds of straight sizing
because my body can absorb nutrients now
& for most people who ‘need’ to be eating gluten-free, you will gain weight!! & we, including those of us who were already fat, should be given space to celebrate that!! hallelujah that my body is still here to grow!!

My dad and I had a really productive conversation about identity and labels and I thought sharing it here would be helpful...
The thing about identities isn't necessarily to tell everybody everything about who you are. It is to communicate what you think is important to share. For instance, I don't think it's important to identify as a vegetarian or any label like that, so I don't apply them to myself, even if the labels apply to what I practice. However, I claim manhood because I value it. I decided that I wanted to communicate my personhood and identity with that label. Take what you like, and leave the rest behind.
You don't need to feel as though you have to have a label for everything if you don't want. You can have a couple labels, you can have a million. It's all about what you decide to share about your personhood. The labels are for you to communicate and relate not only to society, but to yourself.

Hiii! I’m so happy ur doing an event I love ur writing but I know uve been busy so I didn’t want to bother u with a request!! I’m a little embarrassed tbh i don’t really request stuff very often…
Ik it’s not what u usually write but how about a domestic type situation w maybe keigo and his gf cooking together and it leads to some passionate, loving kitchen sex?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In between flicking through specialty recipes on his phone and fussing about the kitchen with a furrowed brow, Keigo's attention is focused entirely on the heaping pot of soup boiling in your shared kitchen.
Well, nearly entirely. He would be completely focused, if not for his favorite little distraction within sight.
He could easily fetch the utensils himself with a swish of a feather, but he doesn't mention that when you offer to help. Your pleading look is just too cute to deny, he thinks; and like this, you work as his second pair of hands, handing him everything he needs before he has the chance to even ask.
Out the corner of his eye, he can see you perched atop the counter, slowly swinging your legs. You watch the expertise of your own personal chef with rapt attention, and he doesn't miss the look in your eyes akin to a grade schooler experiencing their first crush. It makes his wings twitch.
"It's real sweet of you to do this, you know," you start. "I know it's a lot, you don't have to–"
He silences your protest with a lingering kiss before you have the chance to continue.
"Ah-ah, nope, want to." He waves a wooden spoon at your direction before stealing another kiss, deeper this time.
"What kind of a boyfriend would I be if Iet my sweet dove go hungry," he drawls.
The second he pulls back and you catch a glimpse of those lidded eyes, a wave of realization hits you that he means it in more ways than one.
One kiss devolves into countless. He's determined to prove his passion with each one, firm hands gripping the counter on either side of you. Your little delighted laughs spur him further, a lopsided grin forming at the corners of his lips.
"Need me, baby?"
There's no need for you to nod. Keigo knows; but you give him a sweet shake of the head anyway, if not just for show.
"Course you do..."
"But the food, what if–"
"So little faith in me." He sends a few feathers off to do the busy work as he busies his hands and attention with tending to your arousal instead. Each little hitched sound spurs him on, and as he rests his forehead against yours, he resolves to keep his love satisfied in more ways than one.

Something that strikes me as I'm planning on hosting some visiting relatives (BTW if I have any New Zealand followers can you please reblog or comment with details about what type of tea is considered standard or a little better than average in New Zealand?) is how much comfort and joy I've given vegetarian and vegan travelers in the past by just serving them some good tasty normal calorie levels vegetarian/vegan food, as unfortunately that can be hard to come by as a traveler in the US and so several of the people I've hosted were obviously running a calorie deficit because they were struggling to find enough food suitable to their diet.
And, I am not vegetarian! I'm low-key ideologically Not vegetarian! But I also believe that 1. It's immoral to intentionally trick someone else into violating their own morals even if you don't share them and 2. Hospitality means serving people good food that they like and can eat.
I've gotten a lot of shocked responses from people in the past when I would say something like, "This recipe can be made vegetarian/vegan if you swap the meat broth with vegetable broth/swap the cheese for vegan cheese or omit it" and then they'd assume that I must be vegetarian/vegan myself, and not understand why I would care about tracking which recipes could be vegetarian or consider it a valuable thing. Other people have dietary restrictions and sometimes I want to make them something nice to eat! It's shitty hosting to invite someone to Thanksgiving and then have like two things out of twenty they can eat, you know?

So I try to not talk about it much, but I struggle with the effects of depression periodically and the last few weeks haven't been great to me in the meals department. I found out about 'The Sad Bastard Cookbook' today though and it's been so useful. (Free to download too!) Lots of ideas for no-spoons meals.

I've been dying to try making new food but I'm usually too paranoid to go outside of my comfort zone of Mexican or Italian, what's something you'd suggest to someone that would be a gateway to making other types of food?
Do you like "beans with a bunch of spices / other seasonings on 'em" kind of meals. Mexican & Italian both got meals like this. Put a can of chickpeas in a pan with some oil and some garlic, add whatever spices you like that you're familiar with, and fry 'em until they're golden and a little crisp on the outside. I like to eat it with rice or flatbread, and a simple salad, and sometimes a bit of feta or cotija or similar texture cheese. If you eat this and think "oh that's good" go look up & try chana masala. Then open your world to other Indian food and / or other curries.
There's a decent amount of overlap between Italian and Greek flavour profiles and ingredients.
You probably already like pasta or rice dishes. Good news: there's noodle and rice dishes all over the world. (Spaghetti's usually cooked to a different level of doneness than other noodles in other dishes, so the texture's not going to be exactly one-to-one here, but it's still an awesome wet long bread.) You don't even gotta make anything complex. Fried rice can be as simple as "day-or-two old white rice, an egg, soy sauce, and whatever veggies I have lying around".
Sometimes just forcing yourself out of your comfort zone at a restaurant is the move. Go to a place you don't normally go or get a thing you don't normally get. And then if you like it you can look into how to make it yourself, or try to look up things similar to it.
There's a million other things you can do, and these aren't the End All Be All of how to make and eat food (frankly that'd just be "make and eat food"), but I could be here all day and throw too many ideas out and it'd probably be overwhelming. So here's a few. Maybe they work out for you or maybe they don't. I wish you success in finding other cool meals to try all the same.
