if the significance of the internet archive being threatened has been lost on anyone, maybe these quick comparisons will put it into perspective…

Banning the Internet Archive would be the equivalent of burning the Library of Alexandria hundreds of times…

So, according to this article 34,000 new digital images of medieval items were uploaded on this site:
https://www.europeana.eu
But it's not just medieval stuff, it's a lot more! Search or pick a theme and explore. It's a great resource of european historical items, documents and images, for writing, art, researching and for whatever else strikes your fancy. You got music, maps, art, fashion, newspapers, magazines, manuscripts, sports items etc.

The organization and filtering system is pretty great too! You can filter by language, country of origin, materials, techniques (depending on theme of course) and many more. Also, you can even filter by usage rights
Tumblr media
Give it a go, have fun!
Edit with other interesting things I found under a read more because it's getting kinda long, but tl;dr browse by topics, read articles and download some free colouring books
Edit: On the collections tab you can find more topics by which you can browse and you can even make your own galleries, like your own private museum collection 💜
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They even have a section where you can download colouring books

HEY BY THE WAY
Z-lib isn't actually gone. It's just 'hidden' and for now the only way to access it (on the regular web) is to create an account via singlelogin.me
It gives you your own unique, password protected personal domain. It works for now, idk if that way won't get blocked too eventually.
EDIT: it got blocked 😭😭 welp, library genesis is still around for now

I recently read this article from Smithsonian Magazine where Christopher Parker discussed book bans. The Digital Public Library of America announced the launch of The Banned Book Club, which “makes e-book versions of banned books available to readers in locations across the United States where titles have been banned.” Users can download The Palace Project app and access over 15,000 titles. The Palace Project “supports the mission of public libraries by providing equitable access to digital knowledge,” and it appears that libraries across the country are willing to participate in this cause. I searched for libraries in Kentucky on the app, and I found three: William B. Harlan Memorial Library, Jessamine County Public Library, and Bell County Public Library. I chose to go through the William B. Harlan Memorial Library. I had to create a library card to borrow a book, however, but I could create one even though I am not a resident of that particular county. I selected The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera, and I could access it immediately as an eBook on my phone. I truly appreciate any initiative that supports access to all books, regardless of any challenges that these titles are up against. I hope to see more libraries in Kentucky on this app as it continues to grow.

Amazingly, on the same day the news came out about the Internet Archive, I happened to be reading a book with a stunning list of online library collections. A lot of these sites even use the Internet Archive to host their digitized books!
I painstakingly transcribed and personally commented on all 72 links, including finding modern or archived links when sites were defunct (this book was a decade old). Huge pain in the ass with dead ends so dead that I felt like I was wasting my time at points, so if this benefits you, don't be shy to let me know in the tags!

Battle for Libraries
Today (3/24/23), Hachette v. Internet Archive was decided in favor of the publishers. This is a huge blow to the integrity of digital lending libraries across the country, and it is crucial that the Internet Archive wins its case if it makes it to the supreme court.
Libraries are a vastly misunderstood and vital resource, even (and especially) in the digital age. For centuries, public libraries have provided patrons with access to information regardless of economic standing, and as corporate greed causes paywalls and subscription services to rise in prominence, digital libraries are more important than ever for our minds and our democracy. In a profit-motivated world, public libraries are our saving grace.
Here’s how you can help:
Petition:
https://www.battleforlibraries.com/
Supporting your local library:
Libraries are very local, so I won’t post a donate link for any specific library. Instead, I encourage you to ask a librarian what you can do to support your local library. This may be in the form of volunteer work or a book donation, depending on your library’s needs :)
Have a library card, but can’t find time to get to the library? Find out if your library uses Libby! Libby is a free app that allows you to borrow e-books, audiobooks, and magazines from your local library. You get to read digital books for free, and you can support your library at the same time!

Our Lady of Sorrows/Our Lady of Piety, painting on parchment, late 17th century.
© Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal
This representation of an altar with the image of a Pietá, a usual theme in Roman Catholicism art (depiction of the Virgin Mary supporting the body of the dead Christ) it was particularly portrayed in the Italian  peninsula, Portugal, Spain and their respective South American/Asian colonies. Quite common in devotional books, sermons, commissioned  paintings by confraternities or for personal piety is unusual in this  particular case the use of illumination at such a late date. The two portraits in the lower corners, in busts almost at half length, the one on the left, in military attire, without wig, wielding a ceremonial halberd and the one on the right, in civilian clothes and wig, are unknown historic figures, perhaps the patrons of some long forgotten confraternity of Our Lady of Piety.

Making my Digital Library
Why I wanted a digital library:
For years I have been collecting books (classics, specific copies or covers of books, trying to gather all of an author’s works, etc) as well as building a self-library for myself so I always have books across the genres to read.
The only issue with this is my shopping habits; most of my books come from thrift stores and used book shops, this paired with my general forgetfulness, has caused me to often come home to find I already had a copy of a book or the same cover.
So, I devised a solution. I would create a notion library so I could quickly look up a book to see if I had a certain cover or already owned many (read as too many) of the same book.
The process to create the template was quick and painless, a description that cannot be shared for the uploading process, though that can be mostly blamed on the size of my library. I took three days to get all of my books uploaded and I am still finding the occasional book I missed. Luckily uploading 1 missed book (or one newly bought book) is simple and easy.
First, let's do a quick overview of the internal organization
The Libary opens to a Gallery view of all of my books in order of when they were uploaded
Tumblr media
Next, we have a tab that shows a spreadsheet of all of my books organized alphabetically by author (this makes it easier to see my collections of author works)
Tumblr media
Next, are two tabs that showcase all the books I have that I haven't read (and all the books I have read and still have)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, I have two tabs that categorize books into "classics" (ie. older than 50 years) and "modern" (ie. newer than 50 years) books

To show you how the individual book system works I will showcase one of my favorite books: 11/22/63 By Stephen King

i’m so fucking sick of people (say, the people currently winning the lawsuit) claiming that the internet archive infringes their precious darling copyrights—if they want individual books taken down, why should the trial not only be about those?—why must they punish the entire catalogue? i use the archive primarily for old historical books, academic books, many books that are niche or 100+ years old which no one can buy anywhere, nearly no one would buy even if they could, and which the vast majority of real libraries do not even carry. i use the internet archive practically every single day for research and studying and it is my #1 resource by far. why do people value profits over knowledge? why do people value profits over accessibility? this is a library and the publishing companies are mad because it allows people to read their works for free. IT’S A FUCKING LIBRARY! poor people deserve to read and access archives. poor people make up the majority of the human race. all this trial is accomplishing is making thousands of great books inaccessible to poor people because publishing companies want to save a few bucks. sure, you can borrow books from other libraries via interlibrary loaning, but doing so takes WEEKS due to shipping. the internet archive saves people an enormous amount of time and money. this is a major case of book burning being put into action and practically no one outside of academia gives a fuck or even knows about this issue because journalists know this story won’t sell well and thus aren’t bringing attention to it. i am disgusted and my hope for humanity is in the gutter.

To get from one side of the U.S. to the other is to criss-cross a veritable snakes and ladders of state and county-level legislation and policy. If you’re after a particular title by Toni Morrison or Margaret Atwood, you might find that it’s available in Georgia, and effectively banned next door in Florida. A new initiative from the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA), launched in concert with the Palace Project, hopes to toss a ladder to people living in places where access is restricted.
The Banned Book Club is a free e-reader app that uses GPS-enabled geotargeting to determine which books are not available in a given area, and upload them to a library. To transcend petty local politics, simply download The Palace app, then select “Banned Books Club” as your “local library.” You will then be able to access all the goodies that someone else has “challenged.”
Executive Director of the DPLA, John Bracken, said in a statement that “book bans are one of the greatest threats to our freedom.” Thus, your local library doing what it can to remedy your rights.
They can’t wrap every state in tin foil, can they!
The project was announced on July 20th, and is doing its work as I type.

Does anyone have any advice / resources on how to get started building a digital library? I’ve been reading about it and cautious about Google drive because of privacy concerns. It would primarily be PDFs but would include some links and other file types. I was looking at sync.com but it looks like it can only be accessed by people with an account, and I’d rather not have that barrier.
Maybe an old-internet website would be good but I wouldn’t know where to start with that either.

Has anyone figured out why I have to wait to check out a book on a digital library app?
Genuine question, if it's a digital file why can't an infinite amount of people access it??

by the way, we have a notion where we keep up a library, if anyone is interested. It is guarded by Nightmare (he/it) and passive Nightmare (he/him +neos)
there are book PDFs there, for, like, free
at the moment there are only 2 PDFs but there will be more
