UK research investment to boost UK semiconductor industry
Tumblr media
New funding and support has been unveiled today to back British scientists working on world-leading chip development which could help to power advancements in AI and will underpin the technologies needed to reach net zero.  To coincide with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s one-year anniversary – two new research hubs in Southampton and Bristol have received a cash injection to boost research in silicon photonics and compound semiconductors.  Semiconductors are a key component in nearly every electrical device in the world from mobile phones to medical equipment. They underpin future technologies in net zero, AI and quantum and are increasingly recognised as an area of global strategic significance.  Visiting the Southampton centre, Minister for Tech and the Digital Economy Saqib Bhatti said:    This investment marks a crucial step in advancing our ambitions for the semiconductor industry, with these centres helping bring new technologies to market in areas like net zero and AI, rooting them right here in the UK. Just nine months into delivering on the National Semiconductor Strategy, we’re already making rapid progress towards our goals. This isn’t just about fostering growth and creating high-skilled jobs, it’s about positioning the UK as a hub of global innovation, setting the stage for breakthroughs that have worldwide impact. Each £11 million site will help convert scientific findings into business realities. They will support promising research and projects, offering researchers access to state-of-the-art prototyping technology essential for testing their complex designs, and nurturing early-stage companies. This includes empowering spin-outs with training, workshops, and vital industry contacts, ensuring they are fully equipped for when their products are market-ready.  The REWIRE facility at the University of Bristol will support chip companies across the South West and Wales, helping to accelerate the UK’s net zero ambition by advancing high-voltage electronic devices with cutting-edge compound semiconductors. The “Cornerstone” Information and Knowledge Centre in Southampton will build on the University’s specialism in silicon photonics. This is an emerging area of research in semiconductors, where light is used to communicate information instead of electricity – meaning the chips that are made using this technology are much, much quicker than standard semiconductors.  World-leading silicon photonics researcher Professor Graham Reed, who will lead the Cornerstone facility, said:    The Cornerstone IKC will unite leading UK entrepreneurs and researchers, together with a network of support to improve the commercialisation of semiconductors and deliver a step-change in the silicon photonics industry. A further funding of £4.8 million in 11 semiconductor skills projects nationwide aims to elevate talent across all educational tiers, from school through to university and beyond. This funding will not only raise awareness of the semiconductor industry but also help to address key gaps in the UK’s workforce talent and training framework.  The centres will help to deliver on the ambitions of the government’s £1 billion National Semiconductor Strategy, a 20-year plan detailing how the government will drive forward the UK’s strengths and skills in design, R&D and compound semiconductors.  This investment is a clear example of the government’s commitment to working in partnership with industry to support the semiconductor sector and achieve the goals of the National Semiconductor Strategy, building on our strengths to grow the UK’s sector  Read the full article

Showcasing Successful Woodbridge Startups' Funding Journeys
In the bustling city of Woodbridge, Ontario, a burgeoning startup scene is capturing the imaginations of venture capitalists and entrepreneurs alike. This isn't just Canada's hidden gem; it’s a hotbed of innovation and growth, where small business owners are breaking the mold, defying expectations, and securing the funding they need to turn their dreams into realities.
Tumblr media
This blog post dives into the inspiring stories of three Woodbridge startups, sharing their funding journeys, and the invaluable lessons they've learned along the way. Whether you're an aspiring business owner with a sketch on a napkin or a seasoned entrepreneur charting your latest venture, you'll discover insights that can propel your startup forward.
Mills & Mead: Legacy Innovated
Mills & Mead began with a love for the craft of woodworking and a desire to preserve heritage amidst modern trends. Co-founders Johnathan Mills and Kevin Mead met at a local workshop, bonding over their woodworking projects and family stories. Their vision was clear: to merge the time-honored art of woodturning with cutting-edge design, producing heirloom-quality pieces for the contemporary market.
Funding these dreams presented a challenge. Conventional lenders were wary of the niche market and the duo's lack of business experience. Nevertheless, undeterred, they turned to crowd funding. Through a carefully curated campaign that married captivating storytelling with social media buzz, they not only surpassed their funding goal but also grew a passionate community.
The success of their Kick starter campaign didn't just fund their startup; it validated their concept. Investors took notice, and soon, Mills & Mead closed its seed round with a combination of angel investment and venture capital. Johnathan and Kevin stand as living proof that when tradition meets innovation, and persistence meets creativity, funding success is within reach.
Grind & Grounds: The Rise of Ethical Espresso
Grind & Grounds is more than a coffee shop; it's an ethos. Founder Lisa Chen saw a need for a third wave coffeehouse that not only served exceptional single-origin coffees but also championed ethical sourcing and sustainability. Her vision extended to fostering community and providing a platform for local artists and musicians.
Funding a brick-and-mortar establishment proved a different beast than digital ventures. Lisa's unwavering dedication to her mission, however, was her strongest asset. She leveraged this, building a business plan that resonated with the ethical consumer movement. Grants and small business loans were essential starter fuel, but Lisa's understanding of her target audience and her commitment to local community involvement piqued the interest of impact investors.
Upon opening, Grind & Grounds wasn't just another coffee shop; it was a hub for conscious living and ethical consumerism. With a solid customer base and a thriving business model, she confidently took on a series A round and expanded her enterprise. Lisa's journey to funding proved that aligning your passion with your purpose can be a powerful magnet for financial backing.
Verdia Robotics: Automating Industry Excellence
When it comes to industrial automation, Verdia Robotics is redefining the status quo. Co-founders Maria Silva and Paul Nguyen had spent years in the field, honing their skills and identifying pain points. Their vision was to create a modular robotics platform that could adapt to the needs of various industries, providing efficiency and cost savings while improving workplace safety.
Securing funding for the development and scaling of a hardware-intensive product was a complex puzzle. Bootstrapping took them from concept to prototype, but to scale, they needed significant funds. Combining government grants with industry partnerships, Maria and Paul built credibility and a strong case for further investment.
Their commitment to R&D and a relentless pursuit of innovation caught the attention of traditional investors who were eager to support businesses at the forefront of technology. Their success tells the story of patience and strategic collaboration, proving that even the most capital-intensive startups can find the backing they need through tenacity and the right strategic moves.
The Common Thread
These Woodbridge startups each followed a unique path to funding success, but they share common threads: a tenacious spirit, a clear vision, and an unwavering commitment to their business mission. Amid the hustle and bustle of Woodbridge's startup landscape, these stories serve as testaments to the fact that with the right blend of innovation and determination, small businesses can secure the funding necessary to thrive.
As you embark on your startup's funding journey, take heart in these tales. Craft your story authentically, know your market, and demonstrate how your business solves a real-world problem or meets an unmet need. Funding isn't just about the numbers; it's about the narrative and the impact your business can make. When that resonates, doors – and funds – will open. Your Woodbridge success story could be the next to inspire the world. Click here to know more about Funding Solutions Woodbridge.

[PRESS RELEASE – Miami, Florida, September 28th, 2023] Supra has raised over $24m in private investment rounds. Supra has received investment from several multi-billion dollar prominent VCs including: Animoca, Coinbase Ventures, HashKey, Prosus Ventures, Razer, United Overseas Bank Venture Management, Valor Equity Partners, among many more. Supra is developing an innovative cross-chain oracle and “bridgeless” communication network that aims to achieve sub-2 second finality with security guarantees that are projected to be over 10x more secure than incumbent bridges using their bespoke consensus algorithm, “Moonshot Consensus.” Supra is helping to facilitate the massive migration of Web2 to Web3 by turbo-charging oracles, cross-chain communication protocols, and their cutting-edge consensus mechanism to build a more secure and interoperable future. There are already over 1.5 million cryptocurrency data pairs being updated daily using Supra’s next-gen oracle technology. Over $24m in private investment funding has been accepted from strategic partnerships that recognize Supra’s game-changing R&D at the cutting edge of the Web3 stack. With several whitepapers spanning 150+ pages in peer-academic review, Supra’s team of PhDs has been making significant contributions to the body of academic work in secure multi-party computation, decentralized consensus, and blockchain oracles. Leading the way is Dr. Aniket Kate, known best for his work on KZG Polynomial Commitments that underpin Ethereum’s L2 scaling roadmap, Supra’s innovations are quickly becoming the new standard for state-of-the-art for oracle protocols. As for funding, Supra has received support from some of the world’s largest digital asset funds and organizations, including: Animoca Brands, BCW, Coinbase Ventures, FiveT Fintech (formerly Avaloq Ventures), Galaxy Interactive, Hashed, HashKey, Huobi Ventures, No Limit Holdings, Prosus Ventures, Razer.com, Republic Crypto, Shima Capital, Signum Capital, SMO Capital, Sound Ventures, Sublime Ventures, UOB Venture Management (United Overseas Bank), and Valor Equity Partners. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdQGINcueec[/embed] In order to decentralize ownership and governance of the network, over 500 other funds, node operators, and angel investors have been brought in amongst these prominent names to help strategically distribute the token supply. Increasing distribution of their token is critical to the long-term success of Supra’s decentralized network. Furthermore, Supra has recently announced a major gamified learn-to-earn airdrop opportunity for community members to further distribute $SUPRA to a wide range of stakeholders. Users can check out their Countdown to Blast Off campaign to join other Supra cadets and learn more. Through their gamified learn-to-earn program, Supra is projected to have over 500,000 KYC’d token holders during their Token Generation Event, which is set to occur in early 2024. Moving Forward Joshua Tobkin, CEO and Co-Founder of Supra, said he’s excited to bring Supra to market and give DeFi developers and end consumer a provably fair, high-performance oracle service. “We’re very pleased to have achieved the support of some of the biggest names in the blockchain industry,” he stated. “Building our network of strategic partnerships is extremely important to our future growth. These partnerships will go a long way towards developing the momentum necessary to bring a much needed security upgrade to the oracle space to further protect DeFi.” “Too many people have already been negatively impacted by decentralized finance hacks or exploits, and too much money has been lost. We see our cryptography driven solutions as a way to take speed and security guarantees to the next level, which ensures a higher level of protection for end consumers. We need to level the playing-field and we can’t do that until we secure oracles and bridges, which have been the weakest link in Web3. This is an absolute necessity in order for blockchain to achieve its full potential.”
Animoca Brands Yat Siu, the Co-Founder and Chairman of Animoca Brands, commented: “Oracles are an important link bridging data portability and interoperability across different networks, and we’re therefore thrilled to support Supra as one of the projects developing the essential technological basis for a truly open metaverse.” Republic Alex Ye of Republic Advisory said: “The crypto industry had not committed to solving the oracle problem until Supra played the patient game and did their research on L1 consensus for oracles. While others might have come first to market, they all end up delaying the inevitable that Supra now fulfills. Oracles are both the key to cross-chain infrastructure, whether that comes from on-chain or off-chain data. Supra is the key that unlocks the real potential of cross-chain liquidity, multi-chain web3 applications, and more. I fully expect Supra to be the brand name internet infrastructure among traditional financial institutions and Web3 developers as synonymous as AWS, IBM, and Google in the Web2 world.” Hashed A spokesperson for Hashed said: “Oracles are currently the single most utilized vector for exploits, and it’s crucial for the industry as a whole to experiment with different trade-offs to improve this crucial infrastructure. We’re excited to be a part of Supra’s journey as their approach to advancing speed and security with sophisticated randomness will be a great addition to the collective intelligence of Web3. Supra has the potential to open up use cases that were implausible before by redefining liveliness of oracle feeds, and we will be dedicated to exploring new boundaries with the team.” Sound Ventures Maaria Bajwa, blockchain investor at Ashton Kutcher and Guy Oseary’s Sound Ventures, said: “Supra and its incredible team have spent the last few years building a powerful oracle that has the flexibility and usability to scale with this ecosystem as it continues to accelerate in growth. Its node architecture ensures better security than existing oracles, while still processing information at faster speeds. Faster speed is critical to driving Web 3.0 closer to real-time transactions and replacing legacy systems. With a powerful oracle like Supra, DeFi users will now be able to easily offer loans across multiple chains and currencies, thereby expanding the market opportunity in DeFi. And all of this at a cheaper cost for developers and a better environmental footprint.” Prosus Ventures A spokesperson for Prosus Ventures said: “As DeFi use cases expand and scale, new multi-chain oracle solutions will need to come to market. We believe Supra’s technology will be a key component of the Web3.0 DeFi ecosystem, significantly increasing transaction finality to mere seconds, while improving security and enabling cross-chain interoperability. What is also apparent to us is the team’s deep understanding of this space, and we’re confident in their leadership and roadmap to achieve what no other oracle solution has yet been able to accomplish technically.” Huobi Ventures A spokesperson for Huobi said: “Huobi Ventures is thrilled to invest in Supra as they create and build the next-generation oracle infrastructure. We believe their seasoned team of highly experienced professionals will deliver a best in class oracle solution that improves upon the performance and security of existing oracles, and provides a premium product for users. Combining the founding team’s extensive experience with their long-term vision, we look forward to supporting this ambitious organization.” FiveT Ventures A spokesperson at FiveT Ventures (formerly Avaloq Ventures) said: “FiveT Fintech, an early-stage investor in web3 and financial services infrastructure working closely with Avaloq’s ecosystem consisting of over 150 financial institutions, is proud to participate in Supra’s strategic financing round. We see a growing need for verified off-chain data and are convinced that Supra’s ability to operate in such a fast, reliable, and highly decentralized way will enable new game-changing applications.
Getting to know Supra’s team, we were impressed with their profound knowledge and fast-paced execution skills. For FiveT Fintech, Supra marks an important additional piece to complement our strategic investments in crucial web3 infrastructure and we are excited for close collaboration within our ecosystem.” HashKey Harper Li, Investment Manager at Hashkey Capital, said: “Supra is positioned as an IntraLayer with native oracle, native VRF, and native automation. Native oracle is the earliest product, which has been tested on more than 20 testnets. Native VRF combined with DKG technology solves the problem of public output and latency in this field compared with other random number solutions. In the future, the development of native automation will be introduced into the on-chain automatic execution, while the combination of on-chain automatic execution and the abstract account has a lot of imagination space.” Sublime Ventures Musthafa Ahmed, General Partner at Sublime Ventures, said: “What started out as a mission to create a next-gen, decentralized cross-chain oracle solution, has evolved into so much more. Perfectly primed to set the gold standard as Web3’s first intralayer solution, Supra is on track to dominate the industry with their superior and unparalleled tech stack, whilst also acting as the backbone unifying all major ecosystems in the sector.” About Supra Supra is building a low-latency interoperability infrastructure to provide Web3 capabilities that traditional blockchain designs lack. Supra, as a vertically integrated IntraLayer™, enables a shared security paradigm across a variety of oracle services. This includes securing external data on-chain, cross-chain consensus via their bridgeless HyperNova, automation, VRF, and more. After thousands of hours of R&D and simulations, Supra’s technical breakthroughs are solving the Oracle Dilemma and optimizing network performance across the board in terms of security, throughput, time to finality, composability, and programmability. Supra has taken an academic approach to development, which has been an integral part of the organization’s commitment to advancing Web3 performance and security. This is characterized by a commitment to deep research, transparency, and going through a rigorous peer-review process in every design and product released. Dr. Aniket Kate, inventor of KZG Commitments utilized in Ethereum L2 Data Availability solutions, and the Supra team are diligently composing new whitepapers, so there are still many novel solutions in the pipeline soon to be publicized. To learn more about Supra and participate in their gamified learn-to-earn program, visit Countdown to Blastoff. Lastly, sign up for the whitelist for an opportunity to be notified in advance of any possible future token offerings and for more alpha. Source

Artscience work I've done
I've recently found myself having to describe some of my recent work. It’s sometimes easier to do that be listing some of the recent work I’ve done. Here's a first pass!
Maranan, D. S., Casauay, R. F., & Calora, P. (2022). The Value of the Arts and Humanities to Science in the Philippines. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6605198
This report was for a British Council-funded project attempting to describe artscience collaborations in the Philippines. For this particular report, I highlight a specific argument that I made—that the science community can benefit from engaging the arts and humanities across various activities embedded in science processes, not just in the end for communication purposes. The reverse—that arts and humanities can benefit from engaging the sciences—can also be easily argued for, but I left that for a future report.
Emerging Futurists-in-Residence Program: https://bukas.upou.edu.ph/emerging-futurists
The Emerging Futurist Residency is a research and creative program hosted at the Bukas Space by the University of the Philippines Open University and supported by Space Ecologies Art and Design. The residency focuses on supporting and nurturing exploration of multidisciplinary teams of artists, scientists, designers, engineers, and activists in futures thinking and futures literacy in the Philippines. The residency aims to deconstruct dominant paradigms about the future and develops alternative models through a combination of critical inquiry and hands-on experimentation.  As far as we are aware this is the only residency program in the Philippines that explicitly supports foster futures thinking: deep time, deep history, intergenerational thinking and planning, critical imageries of the future, critical digital literacies, speculative design, and radical pluridisciplinarity.
Wearable Futures Hackathon: https://bukas.upou.edu.ph/bams-hackathon-2022
The Wearable Futures Hackathon is a 12-week long, hybrid learning experience was collaboratively created for undergraduate students at UPOU and explores wearable technology, e-textiles, speculative design, and futures thinking
Other creative works and research publications
I have done a number of art, design, and research projects that leverage the dynamic relationships between arts, humanities, science, and technology that touch on themes of health and wellbeing, circular economies, sustainability, and futures thinking.

This design office is delighted by the awards and prizes received by two outstanding buildings that they were able to successfully complete despite the difficulties caused by the lockdown:
The district and shopping center ALEJA in Ljubljana, which was completed in spring 2020, has won the ICONIC AWARD 2021 in the category “Innovative Architecture” and is also one of four projects worldwide nominated for the Global RLI Award in the category “International Shopping Center – New Build”.
The innovative Viega seminar and distribution center in Attersee, which opened this summer, generates more energy than it consumes. The ecological flagship project has been recognized by the award of platinum certification by the DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council) and Gold certification by the Austrian government’s “klimaaktiv” initiative.
Both projects were exclusively integrally and digitally designed with BIM (Building Information Modeling) by ATP architects engineers. BIM2FIM – which was used at Viega – is currently a major talking point in the sector.

As unpretentious, filigree, and contemporary as an IWC watch – ATP’s design for the IWC Manufacturing Center precisely meets the corporate design guidelines and the other requirements of the Swiss manufacturer of luxury watches. The building, integrally designed with BIM, is a manufacturing facility that is convincing in terms of both design and technology and is just as high performing as it is sustainable. With spacious and extremely flexible production areas and a showroom in which visitors can reinforce their passion for IWC.

The German Design Council has honored the IWC Manufacturing Center, which was integrally designed by ATP Zurich, with the ICONIC AWARD 2020 for innovative architecture. In the words of ATP partner and Managing Director of ATP Zurich, Matthias Wehrle: “Visionary architecture and sustainable innovation can stimulate each other perfectly.”

News from Moscow
Kai-Uwe Reitmann
The architect and urban manager is the new Managing Director of ATP TLP Moscow.
Already based in Russia for many years, the German expert Kai-Uwe Reitmann moved in June from Drees & Sommer to ATP TLP Moscow. In line with ATP’s successful dual management system he will lead the 90-strong team of the joint venture with TLP Tsimailo Lyashenko & Partners alongside the engineer Vladimir Horton. “My objective is to further develop the position of ATP TLP as one of the few international design offices in Russia and to build bridges with Europe,” says the new Managing Director.
Reitmann replaces the Austrian industrial engineer Karl Pein who, after five years, has now returned to Styria, where he continues to be active for ATP.

Urban design Projects
Im Lenz, CH
A new urban district with more than 500 apartments as well as office, commercial and retail space has been created on a former industrial site in the Swiss town of Lenzburg. The guiding principle for the design of the “Im Lenz” district is sustainable urban development. ATP Zurich was commissioned to design four of the twelve buildings.
Location: Lenzburg, Switzerland Completion: 07/2017 Integrated design: ATP Zurich Competition 1st Prize (2015)
Weberzeile, Ried i. I., AT
ATP’s Weberzeile is a newly built shopping center that has been extremely successfully integrated into the existing urban structure of a medium-sized town. The retail complex acts as an “anchor” between the old town and the commercial/industrial zone. The success of the strategy was recognized in Weberzeile’s reception of the ICSC Regeneration Award 2017.
Location: Ried im Innkreis, Austria Completion: 08/2015 Integrated design: ATP Innsbruck Competition 1st Prize (2011)
Curtis Fluentis, CH
Despite the high levels of noise pollution from two main transport axes ATP Zurich succeeded in creating a housing and commercial complex with high residential quality. A continuous five-part building provides noise protection to the internal courtyards and loggias.
Location: Cham, Switzerland Completion: 06/2016 Integrated design: ATP Zurich
Municipal Offices, Vomp, AT
A powerful and self-conscious ensemble of two separately accessed building volumes with a connecting wing cleverly exploits the height difference across the site. The roof and the façade play with the materiality of a Tyrolean village as a means of integrating the building complex into the surrounding urban structure.

IN-Tower, DE
Ingolstadt’s first high-rise building acts as a link between the new station building and the “Glacis” – the green belt surrounding the old town. The striking complex accentuates the entrance to the site of the North Station and will act as a powerful symbol for rail passengers arriving in the town in future.

Competition successes
Headquarter Markas, IT
The central requirement of the invited competition was to meet the needs of the growing company and create a link with the heart of Bolzano to the west. The concept by ATP Innsbruck envisages a flexible, column-free office tower that is well-proportioned from an urban design point of view and which, despite its central location, makes it possible to “work surrounded by greenery”

Seestadt Aspern, DE
ATP Vienna was able to secure first place in this EU-wide, open realization competition in this urban development area in Vienna with a concept for a ‘Plus Energie’ building. The project is based on the concept of breaking down the traditional perimeter block.
Location: Vienna, AT Competition: 2016 ATP Vienna
Wohnpark Gebersdorf, DE
The complex requirements of the realization competition demanded the development of a concept for the district which combined high-quality urban design with an innovative residential approach oriented to the needs of children and old people. ATP’s design envisages a calm residential area protected from noise that will also act as a center for the district of Gebersdorf.
Location: Gebersdorf, Nuremberg, Germany Competition: 2016 ATP Munich with Logo verde
Neue Mitte Thon, DE
The concept behind the winning project by ATP Munich includes a reorganization of the area in urban design terms which focuses on reinvigorating the entrance to the district and providing a high quality user experience on the planned district squares. At the same time it seeks to establish a connection with the hardly perceptible and yet still very much present historic center of Thon.

Integrated Design
As an integrated design company ATP architects engineers offer “from a single source” all necessary planning design services – from the project idea to the completed building. This culture of simultaneous and interdisciplinary cooperation is highly influenced by the fact that architects and engineers work alongside full time on specific projects over a period of years.
ATP architects lead this Integrated Design Process. Their close cooperation with ATP engineers leads to innovations in all design phases which make a major contribution to the sustainable quality of the architecture of our buildings. ATP architects and engineers invest their experience and expertise in producing innovative, resource-saving and energy-optimised buildings of a higher aesthetic quality.
Our vision: We want to change our world positively with excellent buildings.
The ATP Partnership Model offers commercial responsibility – and the opportunity of sharing in the success of the company – to a wide number of employees. Partners, Associate Partners and Associates represent the corporate culture of ATP. Members of the partnership are recognisable as much for their commercial and professional ability as for the way in which their engagement transcends their own area of responsibility. In 2018 ATP has 8 partners (shareholders), 33 associate partners and 78 associates. This means that around 15% of employees are part of the partnership.

Carpe Noctem [an original vampire zine]:
Interest Check Results 📊
At long last, the results of our interest check are here!
First, thank you all (again) for your interest in our zine. We were blown away by the amount of responses we got (238??) and in such a short time! We were already at 100 responses in the first 24 hours of posting the interest check; we’re so glad everyone is just as excited as we are!
Moreover, thank you for sticking with us through some early delays. Your continued support means a lot and we’re incredibly grateful.
Some housekeeping: You may have noticed that we’re currently in the process of updating our social media, so pardon our dust. We have however updated our FAQ with some new info. We’re also getting close to launching our applications before the end of the month! Leading up to applications, we’ll be doing some official Mod Introduction posts, so you can get to know us better :’)
⯎ GENERAL BREAKDOWN ⯎
Participation:
We’re looking at an art-heavy zine, with a strong writer showing as well (considering space needed for writing vs. art, we’re aiming for a fairly balanced book)
Price Range:
Main Zine $20-$30 range. Zine + Merch tiers: $30-$40 and above.
Funds:
Split Profit (more details TBA!)
Zine Format:
Both Physical and Digital versions A possible Digital expansion Inclusion of a NSFW / 18+ booklet
Merch:
While final merch will be confirmed later, we can confidently say we will have:
art prints enamel pins sticker sheets keychains large stickers
And that’s the highlights! Keep an eye out for our more upcoming announcements (soon...) and as always, feel free to drop us an ask.
[ Detailed Breakdown and Image IDs below "Keep reading" ].

⯎ DETAILED BREAKDOWN ⯎
⯈ Participation
Most people are interested in participating as artists, with a whopping total of 156 responses (47.7%). 100 responses are interested in buying the zine (30.6%), and 71 indicated interest in participating as writers (21.7%).
⯈ Price Range
Survey participants chose from four different ranges: $15-$20, $20-$30, $30-$40, and $50+. The results for just purchasing the zine were closely tied at 114 responses for the $15-$20 tier, and 115 for the $20-$30 tier, with only 9 responses for the $30-$40 tier. For zine + merch bundles, there were 49 responses for the $20-$30 tier, 128 responses for the $30-$40 tier, and 34 responses for the $50+ tier.
⯈ Zine Funds
Zine funds indicate where the profits would go. We were deciding between for profit, non-profit, and split profit. The results were largely in favor of split-profit (48.7%) with solely for-profit in second place (36.1%) and solely non-profit last (15.1%). We have decided to go with split profit. Specific charitable organization(s) will be decided after final contributors weigh in.
⯈ Zine Format
Most want a physical zine (76.9%) while a lot want both physical and digital formats available (14.7%), and some want just a digital copy (8.4%). We plan on having both a physical and digital option, and depending on the amount of applications we receive, we’re also open to the idea of having an expanded digital version so we can increase the number of accepting contributors while remaining economical.
18+ Booklet?
While the results aren’t displayed on our graphs here, the responses to our question about a possible 18+ booklet were highly in favor. Thus, we will be having a supplemental 18+ booklet along with our main zine and merch. More details on that to come.
⯈ Merch Options
We had a ton of merch options! Note that we may add more types of merch later. To go over our top merch choices:
Small Art prints: 157 (70.7%)
Enamel Pins: 150 (67.6%)
Sticker Sheets: 141 (63.5%)
Keychains: 127 (52.2%)
Large Stickers: 118 (53.2%)
Bookmarks: 102 (45.9%)
Bonus Art Booklet: 93 (41.9%)
Buttons: 90 (40.5%)
Larger Art Prints: 89 (40.1%)
Handmade Mod Bonuses: 48 (21.6)
While our exact offerings will be partially determined by our contributors and what they’d like to create, most of these will likely be available with the zine. We’re also workshopping some ideas for more writing-based merch offerings, so our writers can get in on the merch fun as well~
⯎  IMAGE IDs ⯎
[Image ID: A series of four images. The first image is a black and white Victorian style picture with the words interest check results on it. In the image are three figures. The main figure is a woman-presumably a vampire-with a shawl over her head and back and dark hair. She is reaching over the second main figure, a blonde woman laying on her back in bed asleep, an arm over her head and the blanket pulled part way down. In the background is the third figure, a man in a Victorian style suit with short hair and a moustache. He is entering the room and still part way behind the door, unnoticed by the other two figures. In a hand obscured by the door he is holding a long knife, possibly a sword, and his gaze is focused on the dark haired woman with a serious expression on his face.
The second image is half a black and white picture and half a pie chart infographic, described above under Participation. The picture depicts a Victorian couple, a woman and a man, embraced in a kiss. The woman has long dark hair, a wide hate with a dark feather on top, and a dark dress with a bustle. Her arms and hands are around the man's head and neck as they kiss. The man is wearing a long coat, his back turned towards the viewer so the rest of his clothes are obscured. He has his hat in one hand and the other is obscured. His hair is dark and there are large, bat-like wings emerging from his back.
The third image is half a black and white picture and half a stacked bar graph and pie chart infographic, described above under Price Range and Zine Funds. The picture is a window like image depicting an outdoor scene. There are two main figures, with a large crowd of less distinct figures in the background, watching the two in the foreground. Both main figures are men, both wearing white shirts and wearing hats of two different styles. The one in the front is near the bottom of a hole, kneeling in front of an open coffin with a skeleton inside. He has a leather vest over his shirt and a dark beard with a moustache. He is driving a stake through the skeletons chest area and recoiling as it results in a cloud of smoke, his other hand up to protect his face. The man further back is also recoiling from the cloud and has a very shocked expression on his face. He has one arm up to protect his face and the other hand is still holding a shovel. In the background at the front of the watching crowd is a finely dressed man with poufy sleeves and a large feathered hat who seems to be supervising the event with an indistinct expression. Under the image is a caption that reads “Le Vampire, lithographie de R. de Moraine, tirée des Tribunaux secrets”.
The fourth image is half a black and white picture and half a pie chart and bar chart infographic, described above under Zine Format and Merch Options. The picture is of two figures. The main figure is a woman with dark hair, dark eyeshadow, and a white dress. She is in profile, but glancing down at the second figure. a man who is lying on his back in bed. She is kneeling on the bed next to him, her hands on either side of his chest while she has a seductive smile on, revealing pointed fangs. The man is in a loose shirt, still asleep. One arm is hanging over the side of the be, while his other hand rests on top of his chest. He has short dark hair and a moustache. End Image ID.]

Tractors and hell fire
Why tractors take those who use to firm with them to hell, is the art of being selfish as a plot that can be tilted with 100 people to make their ends meet is selfishly cultivate with 1 person yet there are many willing and longing 4 the above job in their lives without getting such ending up with broken heart. Now to avoid the above we can use the hand held mini-walking tractor tiller as in the link below

The monies the govt pays people in KAZI KWA VIJANA should be long over due as now a job that 100 people do manually like slashing with E-lawn mower 1 man can do who has that machine or the county can buy 4 the same b4 employing some1 to reduce corruption rate on that money as the wage payable u give a % as a ransom of being selected to fund other activities unknown to us as in the link below

They force people with marriages to increase kids number as they had known how to make like kids body wash, star-soft, baby powder and applying oil and even the bottles which contain the same using cut flower solution but if we market the same gimmicks used to make such to many tribes reduces the same so resorting to open hungers as they cant move on as previous and even the 1 4 washing carpets so wanting people to marry to buy the same to fund their agendas. To reduce such the govt should cater 4 the above 4 every poor child born so as not to increase population which on the other hand is pressed as their tribe population shrinks to benefit. Even parts of plastic containers placed in yogurts makes the same not broken parts like basins, cups in the boom process.
The E-cargo drone in the link below can be used to hurl big made like pavement style rocks to form islands to build cities with suspended bridges like NY i suppose dude where u dig holes using the dredger described in tumblr sirjustice199 a/c b4 pumping out all the water as it has a lid/opening 4 the same and pumping in sewer water mixed with nails, bolts or garbage the in the boom process in darkness erect pillars like those of skyscraper on above the water to form framework to place the pavement like big bare rocks made and not to mention, Gold rust not so u can induct the devil to make the inner linings of the erected pillars to be gold instead of iron which rusts and will not make the compacted effect last. U locate places near the shore with shallow water even like 2 Km from the main-land and build ya city and stop the NY wonder, the island can even be like 300-500 meters depending to the plan of ya city as how many people it can hold as in the link below, u can use submarine technology to fix the above under water at sea bed. Cut ripe bananas, pineapple, mfenesi or cassava as well can take the place of cabbage in making of clothes likes in the boom process as options. WORKER and vineyard parable to cement the truth dude.
Wamekula maiti ‘mosingi’, kumenuka bro, yameenda mrama now disforming their countenances. Got to get that b4 saying 1 has bewitched u yet u r a corpse eater and even with white men or overseas blacks people don’t rush to point fingers dude as Colombians are good in that act to stop corpse eating once and 4 good/better.
Like now with different people in other nations and the govt cant chase the away the best is 4 such governments to have bracelets on such people to monitor the night movements cause in the dark night or room even during the day can make the same dude and employs dimmers in those people every room houses which are switched automatically to reduces the chances of making the same above that can be used against a nation like with the Uganda missile found in Italy to warn many nations to stop playing and hearken to the above truths.
Hindu got my postings on how to make gadgets along time and have made the same while kept them, so angered by other nations they despised similar advances, so wants to recruit lame excuse as they white got them into their agendas as they could make the same faster and dude that’s ya shit as even with the missile in the link below was just kept, get to ya country dude, stop reproaches homey. That’s ya shit dude, ya problemo not mine, whether u eat fast or slow provided within the stipulated time u finish don’t make the 1st to finish supreme or be 1st as much as with eating. Mind your business dude!!!
Don’t tell me if i comment on this and that social media it will go well with me, leave me all alone or as i walk in the dark night shoot me from behind. U cant control me dude. I get to any social media i like bro!!!
With the vending machines not armored, u can make a casing armored glass to cover the machine with and make holes 4 bolts and nuts on the floor to fix it just the same with smartphone casings. While armored glass technology can be used to make airplanes where they aint colored but only on the windows. Flower grinned to make solution with water can make the above in the boom process where u insert a piece of broken parts to make such 4 houses and u can even hurl cold milk on ice water with the photo of the broken piece above to make the same. This eliminates the dependency on rye which makes many to forge bad alliances with such countries that grows the same like Germany in the link below. Reason why people love Germany if u know not or them, so lets place time in between to see if the above syndrome will shift 4 the worse as when the dubious plan known
https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/the-top-10-rye-producing-countries-of-the-world.html
Exhume graves like 4 Malcolm X and MLK and bury such in deep sea to eradicate the corpse eating spirit of the believers of the same that if u eat such u became intuitive and innovative to stop the pretense puzzle that USA is bad or good on TV as many long to get there out of the same.
The same way tumblr need no email confirmation and hard to hack is telling u how defeating NY state is hard. Thought u will finish us, the likes of Florida with embassies money built and Texas with internet money, Arizona with ammunition money while Texas with oil money now finished by gas powered machines as well as E-machines. Me wanted to finish their lame excuses as saying they are 4gotten yet their lands contributes to much national wealth yet with me not employed they get not, so want to finish flower export with other options as explained below to they relent as with no excuse 4 being lazy. Guys, i hope u know whom we are addressing. U dude, ya face dull, eat boiled groundnuts, may take ya to hell as u enjoy good things if others don’t take the same, symptoms with 1 who has slept with a dead walking 1 without knowing.
Just say i had a fever, little did i know that they changed my 4head b4 taking deep fried hot Nile perch to make the act above irreversible. May acquit ya out hell fire as an excuse. Not all u think will get to hell fire, what made u do the same i will the reason 4 the day as prostitute with, i had no where to turn to to make Christ say many prostitutes will get to heaven ahead of ya as we want not in the new world others who disturb as u rather get to hell fire and be magma 4 i one week and we forget about ya. MALACHI 4 to bring reality of the above truths not just guess work as many might think with kebi.
When every state separates in the USA those with much interstate visits will deem such as tourists and have the day and on the other hand, USA will not have like 2-5 entry points 4 international tourist but every state with her own national carrier to bring visitors to the airport taking those profits previously held by like Arabian airways, Eu airways or Asian airways as those states with entry points as airports to connect to the mainland will be affected as the flights which ought to land to their airports now lands in every state capital as they also wants to stay afloat and grow their economies as much as with sea ports with introduction of E-cargo drone fitted on big aircraft to eliminate the run 1st thing b4 a plane takes of or touch down to stop dude. Not myth but reality dude
The crime in the bible is the ten commandments as u commit them, Mr Hindu stop antagonizing people with what u think, u r at liberty to think at anything and with many nations has made innovative advances ahead of ya makes u not more superior than them. If so u ought to have come with the same b4 Nigeria, China, SA, Rwanda, TZ, Ghana, Togo, Jamaica or Bangladesh who don’t behave as much as u do as if u r portraying to be Kikuyu, their main cash crops can be made in the boom process as much as tea so we don’t give a hoot. Any1 who thinks profoundly will deem u hungry or gays.
The old not glass walled NY building attracts much tourist more than the like phoenix glass 1, so makes u dwindle in the city much as don’t understand why, cause they resemble the olds and how they can stand 4 long and that’s the NY wonder dude if u did not know homey. So they want to demolish the same without the Negros there as they can see how they are made and eliminate the sad fact that no African tribe built USA to deem like mlk sermons useless as they were saying things they know not well which like the luo or Kikuyu as well as coast tribes have hold dear to get pride or 1st recognition and they want not and pals that’s it. Looking as well 4 those they can sacrifice with the online money failure to pay using their voodoo medicine unknown to those people they claim are to be here like the Negros.
USA can even set 1 point in Africa where their many small aircraft or from other companies bring people to like with Cairo, Tunis, Tripoli or Rabat, where connecting airplanes comes from allover the continents capitals to coverage in the mentioned above cities b4 boarding 1 big USA E-airline plane to take them there in-case their is no separation of “these united states“, if so every state does it personally and even with other continents finding the uppermost cities to converge planes from lower cities b4 getting to USA to save funds.
When u find ways to make artificial eggs, fruits that do not affect the body, kinda u see SA cities like Durban skyline falling as well as with other pay-TV eliminating Dstv u see Jo’barg falling as well as with artificially made timber, poles they used to sell as though cut in her forests yet made artificially. Dude they will meet their ends together, their dirty gimmicks as games known to the ones they entertain the same to.
Kinda, u see 1 hitting ya kisigino/ankle with a rectangular metallic rod/bar directly straight on the ground and the ripple effects gets to ya head as if u r heading a football kicked from another person to u to signal only thing remaining 4 Britain is football betting, jersey and shoes as u have finished them with what they buy in Africa like flower and sell back to ya without knowing getting super-normal profits thinking people will not fathom it and even to selling EU. King of the jew to make the above suggestion a truth that was seen long dude. And even USA pay-TV will loose market as other nations or state have learnt to make theirs they are subscribing to, to save their state Forex as in the link below and even with every machine like Auto-mobiles u see likes of Detroit cities collapsing dude
https://www.investing.com/equities/directv-income-statement
To avoid theft of receipt not paid online by like hiking a little bit the bill like with water or electricity, it ought to be paid online to avoid the same loophole to get rich tricks faster among the lazy govt officials where they create a website with every house number like with sports betting, where it has every household, building and hotels as well as institutions paying the city bill on it, so u can get to know those who have not payed yet and those who have pay to add all their total pay shown on screen to bar the above and breeds accountability in govt operation synonymous with units 4 electricity which has be launched in few African nations as well as same technology applies to digital water meter which its bill can be paid online even on mobile.
Uganda/TZ seized missile, so think twice if an alien is in ya nation, don’t play insane or any local tribe of a country in another land like Mr Hindu in Pakistan, dude believe me u, it will not be business as usual.

Hussein Bolt ahead of USA, will be that way dude but not 4 one year but 4 more than 5, Malachi 4, nyamawho fresh mouth herb artificially made 1 as described in following tumblr a/c of sirjustice199, seldom apple with making airplanes, as what is hurled as its solution dude, bike dynamo, stater comp with inverter to produce electricity dude and other nations software u can google but God dont leave his people behind we got E-machines like cars, airplanes, generator to solve the puzzle below like uncle Nellies of the south siad in 1of MLK sermons as in the link below

HRH Carl Philip, Prince of Sweden, is signing the Volkswagen guest book. From left: HRH Carl Philip, Prince of Sweden next to Andreas Renschler, CEO of TRATON SE and a Member of the Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft Board of Management    Visit centered on Volkswagen’s e-mobility strategy and test drives in the Volkswagen Group’s latest-generation electric vehicles    Sweden is one of Europe’s largest markets for electric vehicles – Passat GTE1 is the best-selling electric car in Sweden    With Scania, the Volkswagen Group is one of the largest industrial investors in Sweden – €2.4 billion invested in the country in the last ten years    Prince Carl Philip met with Swedish startup entrepreneurs at a Volkswagen event on innovative manufacturing technologies and Industry 4.0 Sweden is the Partner Country of Hannover Messe 2019. During his official visit to Germany, Prince Carl Philip was welcomed by Volkswagen Group representatives in Wolfsburg and found out more about the company’s e-mobility strategy. The Swedish Prince was one of the first to test the Group’s new generation of electric cars, including models from the Volkswagen ID. family. Sweden is one of Europe’s largest markets for electric vehicles. Andreas Renschler, CEO of TRATON SE and a Member of the Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft Board of Management, said: “Sweden is a role model in the area of climate protection. Today, more than half of the electricity generated already comes from renewable sources. That is an essential prerequisite for making e-mobility sustainable for passenger cars as well as trucks and buses.” He went on to say: “We have several innovative e-mobility projects in Sweden, for example, Scania will soon begin testing self-driving electric buses for Stockholm’s public transport system.” Sweden is one of Europe’s largest markets for electric vehicles and therefore an important sales market for the Group’s electric models. With reference to Prince Carl Philip’s test drives, the Volkswagen Brand Board Member for Technical Development, Dr. Frank Welsch, commented: “Prince Carl Philip of Sweden is a talented racing driver and an expert on cars. He was a successful participant in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia from 2008 to 2011. And he visited the Rally Sweden and the Volkswagen Motorsport team. I am delighted that an acknowledged specialist is one of the first to test our new generation of electric vehicles that will hit the market from 2020. Sweden will be one of the major sales markets for our ID.” His Royal Highness Prince Carl Philip met with 34 Swedish startup entrepreneurs in Germany for Hannover Messe 2019 on his visit to the Volkswagen Smart.Production:Lab in the IT:City, Wolfsburg. These selected startups participated in an Innovation Day at Volkswagen where concepts and innovations such as electrically-powered automated transport concepts and virtual reality solutions as well as machine learning and artificial intelligence software tools were presented. The event was designed to intensify Swedish-German cooperation in the field of innovative manufacturing technologies and Industry 4.0. The Volkswagen Group is one of the largest industrial investors in Sweden. Scania invested €2.4 billion in Sweden in the last ten years. Scania produces trucks and buses in Europe, South America and Asia and is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of sustainable transport solutions. 96,500 trucks and buses were delivered to customers in 2018 – 19,000 of which were built at the Swedish plant in Södertälje. 20,700 of Scania’s total workforce of 52,100 are employed in Sweden. In early 2018, Scania invested €10 million in the battery manufacturing company Northvolt. The collaboration concerns the industrial scale production of battery cells. A joint research consortium called European Battery Union led by Volkswagen and Northvolt was announced recently. The consortium is applying for funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy to finance the research, development and industrial scale production of battery technology. Furthermore, the Volkswagen Group is one of the largest car manufacturers in Sweden. 103,000 passenger cars and 16,700 trucks from the Group were registered in Sweden in 2018, accounting for a 27.4 percent share of the passenger car market and a 30 percent share of the truck market. The Volkswagen Golf, Passat and Tiguan are among the top ten passenger car models in Sweden’s registration statistics, putting Volkswagen in second place behind Volvo. Electric vehicles accounted for a market share of eight percent in Sweden in 2018. The Volkswagen Passat GTE Leslie Bothge- photos Volkswagen

House of X #3
Tumblr media
With a clearer picture of the timelines and where we are in House of X, issue #3 sets the stage for the assault on Nimrod. Best of all many of the X-Men make appearances in this one. Most importantly my guy Nightcrawler plays a big role in the attack. Cyclops is positioned as the leader with Wolverine, Jean, Archangel and others on the strike team. There is a ton of information packed into this issue as usual. Again, this is a must read for any X-Men fans or new comers looking to get into the future of the mutants. Credits and Thoughts Jonathan Hickman is on this run through the end of House of X and Powers of X. After they wrap up in October, Hickman will write the ongoing X-Men series and co-write the New Mutants.  Pepe Larraz and Marte Gracia continue on this series with art and colors. They character design and environment are excellent. I particularly like the designs of both Cyclops and Jean in this series. Like I said, it is just a must read. If you are a newcomer, you will probably miss some references and characters. But don't let that scare you away. I believe once this series is done, we will all be ready for the new era of X-Men.
Tumblr media
House of X #3 - *SPOILERS* The first part is setting up for the X-Men's mission to stop Nimrod from coming online. Cyclops has assemble the team per Xavier's request. Cyclops and a few others know that they may not be coming back from this one. The plan is to destroy the mother mold that Orchis has build in space so that Nimrod never gets activated. They are not taking any of the Krakoa plants, in case they are unsuccessful. So they will have to get there and back by spaceship. But they are a step ahead of the humans with plans for the mother mold and knowledge of where exactly to hit. The second part of the story catches up to Sabretooth. He was actually captured in the first issue by the Fantastic Four when he, Toad and Mystique steal the information on the Mother Mold. At his trial Emma Frost show up with what I think is two of the Cuckoo sisters. Their names are not given but they do refer to Emma as "Mum" and they dress like Cuckoos. Emma informs the judge that Sabretooth has diplomatic immunity (I can only think of Sean from Psych) and he will be coming with them. This is because the State Department has recognized Krakoa as a sovereign nation. The Assault on the Mother Mold Back to the X-Men's mission to prevent the creation of Nimrod. They approach and land on the Forge before the humans can really react. Then Nightcrawler teleport in for some recon. He and the Omega Sentinel, Karima know each other somehow. With everything going according to plan, the X-Men prepare to breach the Forge. But just as they are ready to move, on of the humans, Erasmus, blows up the sector they are breaching and the X-Men's ship. We will have to wait and see if the X-Men are able to survive, and how they will get home if they do. There is a ton of information given in Hickman's "white pages" too. I will eventually put together some of that into another post. He fills us in on the evolution of the Sentinels, how a forge becomes a mother mold and eventually Nimrod. It's all extremely useful for understanding this series and the future. Online Activism
in week 6 we looked at digital citizenship in regard to activism and protests on social media. Since the emergence of social media more activists have looked to these platforms to spread their message and protest for causes and to raise funds for these causes. Digital citizenship can refer to the benefits for society that comes from new digital and social media tools and its ability to allow participation from each individual within society (Mossberger et al. 2008).
An example of online activism is the Facebook group ‘Anonymous For the Voiceless’ which is an organisation for animal rights that specialises in street activism. their online group and numerous pages help bring people together to discuss and debate over vegan matters. The organisation is all about protecting and saving animals thus use facebook and other social media as a platform for their arguments.
Their mission is simply “Through the use of local standard-practice footage, we expose the public to what they are intentionally hidden from when it comes to animal exploitation. Combining this with a value-based sales approach and resource literature, we fully equip the public with everything they need in switching to a vegan lifestyle. We hold an abolitionist stance on animal exploitation.” (AV: Melbourne 2016).
This organisation relies on the use of social media to get their message across and to organise events such as protests around Melbourne CBD.
In week 6 we also looked at Cultural Jamming. This concept refers to when individuals or groups use current media and appropriate it in a way that delivers opposing views to that of what was initially intended (Carducci 2011, p. 406). Cultural jamming comes in different forms including graffiti/street art, performance art, modifying billboards, mocking advertisements, hacktivism, subvertising, and adbusting (Carducci 2011, p. 406). An example of cultural jamming is below where a coca cola advertisement has been altered to send across a message about consumerism and profit within the industry. The individual or group that created this has mocked the coca cola advert and opposed its views entirely through its creative way of activism; this is cultural jamming.

ESA’s 25 years of telecom: marking a milestone As ESA’s umbrella programme for telecom, ARTES, celebrates its 25th year, we will be examining why it was set up, how it and the European satcom environment have evolved, the opportunities and challenges that both face today, and what the future holds. The early nineties were a transformative time in the European space sector. The geopolitical scene had changed dramatically in a few short years, with the end of the Cold War in 1991 and the introduction of the EU Single Market making waves across the continent in 1993. ESA had been keeping an eye on the burgeoning global satellite communications market for a while, and the recent technical and socio-economic developments left it concerned that Europe could be left behind. By 1993, progress in satellite technology had elevated satellite broadcasting and the distribution of television programmes to an essential presence in people’s homes. Fixed satellite services were enabling high quality telephone connections between different regions of the globe, and the maritime sector was making regular use of satcoms for daily business. More applications were starting to appear over the horizon too, as digital audio and video broadcasting moved from development to implementation, and ESA projected that satellite’s speed, flexibility and connectivity in areas beyond the reach of ground infrastructure would spark the interest of markets like aviation and terrestrial mobile services. It was clearly a growth sector, but one that was already being dominated by American companies, helped in a large part by national public investments into research and development as a result of their substantial and well-funded defence programmes. For example, some of the small platform designs being produced in the US at the time were based on micro-miniaturisation of sensors and electronics that had emerged from the US military programme. This resulted in American companies having highly competitive small platform designs to offer, without needing to allocate their own resources to testing and validating the products themselves, with similar examples being seen across the satcom value chain; and indeed in other, emerging competitor countries. Without a pan-European equivalent to this type of support, Europe was financially outgunned on all sides. At the time, Japanese and US total investments into R&D stood respectively at 3% and 2.5% of their gross domestic product, compared to Europe’s paltry 1.5%. This also led to investment by the private sector in Europe trailing behind the competition, with US companies investing the equivalent of 1.8% of their national GDP and the Japanese private sector contributing 2%, while in Europe, this stood at just 1%. ESA concluded that without more institutional investment into European satcom R&D, Europe’s industry would miss out on the wealth of opportunity presented by new emerging services and the accelerating deregulation of Europe’s economy, especially in telecommunications. Earlier, ESA support for individual initiatives in telecom and other space applications had stimulated some useful developments. More than thirty satellites could be traced back to technology originally developed by the Agency’s Orbital Test Satellite programme, for example, with the accompanying boost to Ariane launches; and Olympus had birthed a new generation of on-board systems and demonstrated the use of satellite capacity for videoconferencing, distance learning, business broadcasting and VSAT networks, increasing commercial demand in all those areas. It was clear that corralling all these disparate elements into a broad ESA-led telecom initiative was necessary to enable Europe to compete on the global stage. So, with the motivation clear, ESA decided on a methodology. It was determined that above all, ESA’s support should help Europe’s space industry adapt to the ever-changing commercial satcom landscape, as well as provide some counterweight to the advantages enjoyed by European industry’s larger, better supported competitors abroad. In 1993, it was decided that the best way to do this was to group the existing individual ESA telecom projects under an umbrella programme of Advanced Research in Telecommunication Systems – ARTES. In addition to the R&D, the programme was launched with the specific objective of helping to de-risk new technologies, with ARTES shouldering some of the financial burden in order to encourage private sector investment in cutting-edge products and services and thereby bring them to market more quickly. With this, ESA had assumed a role that in other areas of the world was played by the national public sectors. The need for this role would develop even further in the years to come, with the underlying logic still being as relevant today as it was then, but the challenges growing in both scale and number. Join us in two weeks’ time to find out what this nascent ARTES programme has become, and how the satcom market has evolved in the 25 years since its birth.
