If the human eye can perceive roughly a million shades of colors than why can he only see in a monochromatic scale? Where everyone else see the world through the lens of red, green and blue, Ken sees black, white, and grey. Reminiscent of a distant passing wave. An endless sea that went on for miles out in the ocean with no end in sight.

Where did his vision go wrong? And why has it failed him? When did he lose the color spectrum everyone loved and coveted? How has he not noticed before now? Hollow with every step forward, the winter air harsh against the soft flesh of his cheek. No coat, no gloves; no hat or scarves. The perfect recipe for catching your death.

He left home with a coat. Could recall the feel of soft cotton on top his head, when did he step outside? How is it that he's walking home now? What time of day is it?

Can't tell. The sky is grey.

By the next hour, Ken stood before his home where mother and father resided, and a remnant of his brother once strong and smart haunt the halls. Took space in the bed beneath his own, making those ghastly groans as if asking to be put out of his misery like a cat who has lived their life, returning home to their master only when it was ready to perish.

He schooled his expression, fingers stiff and numb from the cold where it had spent time affixed to his book against his chest. Unable to maintain a solid grip on the door handle without gritting his teeth, and pushing through the pain of reawakening limbs on the verge of death.

"Good evening," Ken called out, his voice resonating to only echo back in greeting.

He frowned, less than surprised. The familiar shuffling about in the kitchen said enough, whereas the blaring noise from the tv in the living room filled in all of the gaps.

With his shoes toed off --- quiet and discreet with every step forward --- Ken retreated to his bedroom, knocking on the door before entering out of consideration for the ghost haunting his room.

He’d be embarrassed, feeling stupid with his purchase as he stood there.

Then the secret’s out. Outside of the Digital World and facing mutual enemies, Ken is not truly part of this group. An outsider granted the briefest of glimpses only when needed and then, only when wanted. Startled out of this endless spiral with an impatient noise by a disgruntled clerk.

“Hey,” the cashier began, “Listen kid, you gonna pick a flavor or not?”

They blinked, violet eyes readjusted to the dull colors of the waking world. He smiled apologetically, settling for the basics as he picked out a sugar cone, one with two scoops of vanilla and the other with two scoops of chocolate. Whichever one Daisuke picked left the lather for him to eat. Even if he didn’t want any, even if he’s only buying ice cream to spark life in the Chosen Children’s fearless and optimistic leader, less so now as he contended with the reality of the real world. 

Wormmon would praise him. Ken, however, felt robotic with each and every step as he strove to find himself and who he wanted to be.

He sighed, shoulders deflating. There’s no point in starting down this rabbit hole again. He’ll end up with melted ice cream all over his hands, and something new for the media to poke at about him since he’s returned. He could see the headline now: Tamachi’s Local Genius Spaces Out In The Middle of Tokyo’s Shopping District: Is melted ice cream a new trend?

“Here,” he held out both cones, sitting down next to Daisuke on the bench, “I couldn’t decide.”

Liar.

“Which one do you like most?”

Great tactic! Can’t go wrong with the two classics, right? Even if Daisuke had a abnormal favorite, it isn’t like he could dislike both. He has to like one of these ice cream flavors by default.
