The fossil is not the animal.
The fossil is not the bones of the animal.
The fossil is the stone's memory of the bones of the animal.
And that's a poetry older than words.

August 7th was a big day for me. Finally. After 5 years of participating in fieldworks, I found a skeleton of a theropod!
Well, this is actually not a full skeleton, but! For all the years of research on the Shestakovo location since 1953, only single bones of various theropods have been found here. And in general, all previously found here articulated skeletons belong only to psittacosaurs... So... this is really something new.

The wet sandstone was very brittle and crumbled at the touch of fingers exposing the fossil.
However, finding something is only half the case. You have to take it with you somehow and not break it. The fossil was encased in a single piece of sandstone weighing at least a third of a ton, lying on the bank of the Kiya River and half submerged in water. A high sheer cliff overhangs the shore, and the surface below is littered with cobblestones, on which no one truck can pass. The only way to take the fossil is to float it down to the gentle shore.

But there was a small problem... We had no boat or something. Fortunately, a local resident agreed to transport the block with the fossil on his own rubber boat. This was a small two-person rubber boat that can barely withstand the weight of the rock block. In addition, it turned out that the tightness of the air chamber of the boat is broken, so it needed to be continuously pumped up, otherwise the boat would have just sunk. x') But after a couple of hard hours, the fossil was finally loaded into the car... which couldn't move because it got stuck in the mud.

In parallel with all these events, I fought for the safety of the fragile bone, which was in a piece that broke off from the monolith. Its transportation took another day.

Location: Shestakovo-1 «Malyi Yar», Kiya River, Western Siberia. 08/08/2023
Now the fossil is in the camp. After drying and removing excess rock, it will be sent to the city for tomography. And maybe after that we will find out the taxonomic affiliation of the found prehistoric animal.

Discovered in a mine in Alberta, Canada in 2011, a fossil of a nodosaur dinosaur is one of the most well-preserved fossils of its kind, down to its skin, scales and even the contents of its stomach. These heavily-armored herbivores walked the Earth between the Late Jurassic and Late Cretaceous periods, with this particular specimen dating back 110 million years.
Considered one of the major archeological finds from the last decade, the nodosaur is currently on display at the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Alberta, Canada

I took this at the Melbourne meusem Horobilis if the most expensive skeleton by meusems at 2.5 million dollars and their are 80% complete which for triceratops is really complete.
They had grey replacement parts to show what it would look complete.
I am in love with them.

Nature: Dinosaur Bones
I think when you work on fossils, and you realize that a species is there, and it's abundant for quite a long period of time, and then at some point it's no longer there - and so, when you look at that bigger picture, yes, you realize that either you change and adapt, or, as a species, you go extinct.

Taking a shot in the dark here but does anyone know where I can find 3d models of (dinosaur) skeletal reconstructions? I've found a couple on Cults3D and I've tried MorphoSource but I'm having a rough time using the search features on the latter :/

Dinofact #65
Although dinosaur DNA has not yet be extracted from insects trapped in amber, as shown in Jurassic Park, reports of successful extraction DNA directly from fossils has been reported twice, although neither could be confirmed. However, soft tissue has been discovered in dinosaur fossils, including blood vessels, portions of intestines, and even remnants of nuclei and red blood cells. No DNA has been successfully extracted from them, however, several proteins have been detected in several dinosaur fossils.

Know Unique Facts About Ammonite Fossil
Fossils are the only key way to understand our history and what type of creatures lived billions of years ago. Fossils help scientists to figure out what type of weather conditions used to be and whether they were suitable for humans or not. Moreover, due to an extensive range of fossils, scientists can understand what natural calamities occurred at that time and what harm they caused to species. Continue reading to know more about ammonite fossils.

Learn More About Ammonite Fossils
Ammonite fossils are fascinating relics from a time long gone. These extinct marine animals, which lived during the Mesozoic Era from about 240 million to 65 million years ago, had a distinctive coiled shell that they used for protection and buoyancy. The shell had a series of chambers that the ammonite could fill with gas or water to control its buoyancy, allowing it to move up or down in the water column.
Ammonites were cephalopods, which means they were related to modern-day squids, octopuses, and nautiluses. However, ammonites were much more diverse and had a more comprehensive range of sizes, shapes, and colors than their modern-day relatives. Some ammonite species had spines or ridges on their shells, while others had intricate patterns or iridescent colors. The name "ammonite" comes from the spiral shape of the shell, which resembled the horns of the ancient Egyptian god Ammon.
Ammonite fossils are found worldwide, from Europe to North America to Australia. They are prized by collectors and can be very valuable, especially if they are large, well-preserved, or have unusual colors or patterns. Ammonites are also helpful for scientists studying the history of life on Earth, as the evolution and extinction of ammonites can be used as a marker for different geological periods.
Some ammonite fossils have preserved soft tissues, such as the ink sac or the outline of the body, which can provide valuable information about the anatomy of these ancient creatures. It has allowed scientists to gain insights into the lifestyles of ammonites, such as their diet, reproductive behavior, and movement patterns.
Throughout history, ammonite and dinosaur fossils have also been used in various cultures as amulets, decorative objects, or even as currency. They have been found in burial sites in ancient Egypt, used as amulets by the Romans, and traded as currency by the indigenous people of North America.
Ammonite fossils were not always coiled. Some of the earliest ammonites had a straight shell, and only later did they develop the characteristic spiral shape. This shell evolution likely helped them become more buoyant and better able to regulate their depth in the water. Their shells proliferated, with some species adding as much as 1 cm of shell per month. This rapid growth rate allowed them to adapt quickly to changing environmental conditions, such as temperature changes or food availability.

Ancient marine animals were diverse and adaptable, with rapid growth rates and the ability to adjust their buoyancy. Fossils can provide valuable insights into past environments and the biology and behavior of these extinct creatures. They have also played a role in human culture throughout history, serving as decorative objects and spiritual significance. Several new photos of theropod fossil from the Early Cretaceous (about 125-113 mln y.o.), found on the bank of the Kiya river in West Siberia three weeks ago.
See my previous post about this dude (by the way, thank you all for attention to my little story! 💚).

So, after a little preparation, we saw a complete set of tubular bones of one leg: thigh, tibia and fibular, metatarsal and phalanges. Another metatarsal and possibly tibia lie below. We can see 5 claw phalanges so far, and they are all pretty similar in shape and size. The bones on the right may be part of the forearm of the same being. Also, izolated fragments of ribs protrude from the sandstone block on the sides. Hopefully, we will be able to do a tomography of the sample soon.

Photos by Yaroslav Zheleznov.
So, the preliminary conclusions so far are as follows: it was a relatively small theropod dinosaur about two meters long. We have not yet found anything that could indicate the diet of this animal, therefore, we cannot say for sure if it was a carnivore or a herbivore. Judging by the length and structure of the legs, the dinosaur was a pretty good runner. And, as I wrote earlier, we have not yet established the taxonomic affiliation of it. So far, a cautious assumption is being put forward that this is some kind of Noasauridae (Elaphrosaurin) dinosaur.
I'll keep you posted if anything clears up.
