#dinosaur stalks it's prey

I was trying to remember what the hell Dinosaur was about because it’s one of those movies I watched constantly from like ages 6-10 and then never saw it again, and I came across this fun fact while I was reading a plot summary
Tumblr media
And I’m just. Holy shit. Can you imagine if they had done that? Like, the predators never speak in movies like this. And the reason is obvious, because they need to be Other. They’re predators, you’re prey. They’re animalistic, they’re monstrous, they can’t be reasoned with. They’re driven only by instinct and a desire to kill and eat you. If they speak, it’s in growls and snarls and roars, a language you don’t understand.
So how fucking horrifying would it be. If after all this time of this monster stalking you through the prehistoric wastelands, killing your friends, and finally catching up and cornering you,
It looked you in the eye
And started talking to you.

Summary: Being sick is never fun
Tumblr media
With Mommy now playing for West Ham, it means you get to hang out with Harper.
Harper's not as rough as you and Mommy always has to remind you not to be so rough with your playing in case you both get hurt. Harper doesn't seem to mind though because she always gives you a little kiss hello and goodbye at the end of the day.
Harper's mommy Mini tries to stop her a few days ago because she caught an illness from kindie but she wasn't quick enough.
"No," Your Mommy says firmly when you lean in to kiss Harper's cheek too," Harper's sick remember?"
You grumble a little bit but don't argue, content with just being allowed to hold Harper's hand in yours as you all troop out to the cars. You wave goodbye to her as Mommy bundles you into your car seat.
Mom is already at home when you get there and you try to run off to greet her but Mommy snags you by the back of your shirt.
"Remember," She says," Slow and careful."
You huff but nod, moving slowly like you're a T-Rex stalking its prey.
Mom smiles at you. "Come on, Chook," She cajoles," You can move faster than that."
You snap into action faster than Mommy can stop you and you crash into her.
Mom laughs and lifts you up.
You whine a little wiggling away and she frowns.
She lifts up your shirt and sighs. "Did you fall again today, Chook?"
"Was playing with Harper!" You reply," Was only a little fall!"
"Well, that's not a little bruise. Kristie! Can you chuck me the bruise cream? Chook's got herself hurt again!"
"Doesn't hurt," You deny. You try to squirm away but Mom lathers cream all down your side. You stop fighting a little quicker than usual though because out of nowhere your head starts aching.
Mom adjusts her positioning so her knee is properly stretched out as Mommy comes to sit down on your other side, letting you sip from her drink.
You grow bored of hanging out with your moms though and squirm out of your seat to go and find Helen and your dinosaurs.
Your head starts pounding on and off for the rest of the day and you push your food around your plate even if it's one of your favourites.
Mommy tries to change you into your Spinosaurus onesie but it's much too hot for you and you keep pulling the zip down no matter how many times Mommy pulls it back up again.
In the end, Mom makes Mommy change you into pyjamas that you only really wear when it's stupidly hot but they're still dinosaur themed so you like them.
"Stop touching it," Mommy says sternly when she notices you poking your bruise.
You don't understand why she gets so annoyed. Bruises are super cool and this one has gone a really dark purple colour. Mommy gets worried when bruises are like that so you stop poking and prodding at it even though Mom's laughing at it all.
Your nose feels kind of runny and you swipe at it before Mommy can see.
Mommy worries a lot. She worries even more now that Mom hurt her knee so you go to bed without telling her about your achy head, your runny nose and your scratchy throat.
Tomorrow's her day off anyway so it's meant to be the day that Mommy can relax.
That's why when you wake up the day after feeling so much worse than before, you don't tell anyone.
You sit in your play corner where you can keep an eye on Mom and play with your dinosaurs. Helen mews softly as she approaches, headbutting you in the arm before sitting down next to you.
You tickle her behind the ears but your arm feels a bit heavy and you drop it to the ground. Your other arm feels heavy so you stop playing with it too.
In the end, you just sit facing the wall, staring at your dinosaurs and making up a story in your head.
Sam narrows her eyes as she watches you, staring. You don't move for a long while and if it wasn't for the small rise and a fall of your shoulders, she'd have thought that you'd fallen asleep then and there.
You're being a little strange today. You hadn't woken up early like you usually did on days off. You hadn't come running in demanding someone play with you outside or squirmed away when Kristie inspected your bruise at breakfast.
It was out of character for you and Sam can do nothing but stare as Kristie blows out her nose next to her. She must have caught something off Mini at practice.
Sam knew Harper had been ill recently and it all begins to make sense.
Everything happens at once. Your bad behaviour suddenly has an explanation just as you convulse suddenly in your play corner.
Helen meows loudly, jumping up and running away as the sound of something wet hits the carpet.
You burst into tears.
Sam stands up too quickly and falls back onto the sofa as her knee radiates pain in protest.
Kristie surges up too, perhaps too fast as well because her head throbs but she's really the only uninjured person in the house.
You've thrown up all over the carpet and your favourite dinosaurs. It runs down your chin and you sob.
"Oh, Chook," Sam says, stubbornly getting up again and reaching for her crutches," It's okay. Don't cry."
Kristie makes quick work of taking your top off and then your bottoms even though her own medicine hasn't kicked in yet and her head still aches like hell. You've clearly gotten the worst version of this sickness.
You just sob harder, blabbing and gagging when you realise that you've got the same taste of sick in your mouth. "No, no," You say when Mommy begins to walk you into the bathroom, "Mom-Mom...Her knee hurts."
"I think you're the priority here, Chook," Mommy says but you shake your head as she pops you into the bath and turns on the taps," Mom's a big girl. She can take care of her own knee right now."
"No...No! You help Mom's knee! I'm not sick! Was an accident!"
Mommy just hums as she gently washes your face with a flannel.
Mom pops her head in through the door.
"I've got medicine for her and her Stegosaurus towel."
Mommy takes it. "Go and sit down, Sam," She orders," Take some painkillers and ice your knee."
"I'll clean up the sick first."
"I'll do it," Mommy insists. She plucks you out of the bath and puts your towel over your head. It's a bit like your onesie where it's got a hood that makes you actually look like a stegosaurus. You really love it but today you couldn't care less.
Mommy flips the hood up and you gag again.
You're moved quickly over the toilet and you throw up inside of it.
Tears prick in your eyes when you notice Mom still standing there. She goes to reach for you, to bend her knee but Mommy blocks her way.
"Go, Sam," She says," Go to bed and ice your knee. You're not any use to me right now. I'll send Chook to you once she's ready." She takes the medicine from Mom's hand and all but pushes her out the door.
"Sorry, Mommy," You say through your tears," Didn't mean to."
Mommy softens considerably from when she was dealing with Mom and she rubs your back as you weakly gag over the toilet bowl and nothing but bile comes up.
"Don't say sorry, Chook," She says to you," This isn't your fault. It's just bad timing is all, no one's angry."
"You were angry at Mom," You say, crying much harder than before," 'S your day off. You have to look after Mom. Sorry I made it harder."
Kristie's own nose is blocked and stuffy and her head pounds in agony (although she knows the medicine should start kicking in soon) but she still draws you in for a hug as you sob on her shoulder.
"It's okay, Chook," She coos even as you apologise over and over again," It's all okay. You're being brave. You're so good. You're such a good girl."
"I'm sorry!"
"Hey," Mommy says as she pulls away, gently wiping away your tears," You have nothing to be sorry about." She spoons the medicine Mom brought into your mouth. "Why don't you head on to bed with Mom? I'll be there in a little while."
You sniffle. "I can clean."
"No, Chook. You're very sick, like Harper was. And Harper's mommies didn't make her clean up, did they?"
You shake your head.
"Then you don't have to clean up either. Go on, go to bed with Mom."
You shuffle into Mom and Mommy's bedroom. Mom's got the tv on and a bag of ice pressed against her knee.
"Hey, Chook," She says when you come in, leaning down to lift you up.
"Sorry that you hurt your knee more, Mom," You whisper, knocking your head against her collarbone. You stay slumped on top of her as she gently works her fingers through the knots in your hair.
"It wasn't your fault. Accidents happen. I'm sorry you're feeling so sick."
Sam reaches to the side and drapes your favourite blanket over you. It's got little images of Mosarsaurus and Baryonyx on it and you go limp when she tucks it around you.
"Hey," Kristie says softly from the doorway.
"Hey..."
"I'm sorry," She continues," For yelling at you like that, in the bathroom. It was all..."
"Overwhelming, yeah, I know." Sam keeps gently stroking your hair as you sleepily puff out air against her collarbone. "I want to be more help, Kristie, I do-"
"Your knee won't let you, Sam. Don't beat yourself up about it. I shouldn't have yelled at you like that. We're all trying our best here."
"But you're sick too. It's not fair that you have to take care of all of us."
"I'm barely sick. It's just a headache and a runny nose. I'll survive. What we need to work on is getting Chook to tell us when she's feeling sick, okay? We were caught off guard today. It won't happen again."
"Mommy," You say softly," My tummy hurts again."
Kristie sighs though she's smiling when she does it and lifts you easily into her arms. She doesn't get very far though when you're tummy has had enough and you throw up all over Sam's chest and your front.
She sighs. "If you get me a bin bag to cover my knee with, I'll hop in the bath with her."
"I'll get the Pterodactyl towel out of the dryer."
"It's a Pteranodon," You sniffle," Not a Pterodactyl."
Mom strips out of her shirt and takes you from Mommy.
"Sorry, Chook. Pteranodon, then."

A Shoo-in Shoebill Stork
The shoebill stork, also known as the whalebill stork or Balaeniceps rex is in fact not a stork at all, but a long-legged wading bird belonging to the family Pelecaniformes. This species can be found in the central African tropics, from southern Sudan to northern Tanzania. Within this range, they mainly inhabit freshwater swamps and dense marshes, particularly those with deep water large reed beds.
Balaeniceps rex is often referred to as a dinosaur among birds due to its fearsome appearance. The average individual stands 1.1-1.4 m (3.6-4.5 ft) tall and has a wingspan of 2.3 to 2.6 m (7.5 to 8.5 in). However, adults are quite light, weighing only 4 to 7 kg (8.8 to 15.4 lb). Males tend to be larger than females, but otherwise the two sexes look identical. Adults have dark grey plumage with a lighter belly and darker wings. Their most striking feature is their beak, which is extremely large and can be said to resemble a wooden show (hence the name).
The shoebill's beak is very useful for catching its primary prey: fish. B. rex consumes a variety of species, including lungfish, catfish, and tilapia, as well as non-fish items like water snakes, frogs, turtles, mollusks, and even young crocodiles. Shoebills typically stalk their prey, or stand perfectly still and wait for their prey to come to them, before quickly snatching it up and decapitating it with the sharp edges of their beaks. Because of their large size and strong bills, adults are seldom prey for other animals, and they defend their nests fiercely from predators like snakes and other birds.
Outside of the breeding season-- and even during it-- shoebills are extremely territorial. Not only do they chase potential predators away from their nests, both males and females will fiercely defend their territory from other shoebills.
Breeding begins in the dry season, typically in in May, and lasts until about October. Once a male and female form a pair, they remain together for the duration of the mating season. They build a nest from floating vegetation, and 1-3 eggs are cared for by both parents; in addition to being incubated for warmth, one parent may also occasionally pour a beak-full of water over the eggs to keep them cool during the hot summer day. The eggs hatch about 30 days after being laid, and young are fed continuously-- though usually only one chick survives to adulthood. At 125 days old they become fully independent and leave to establish their own territories. The average individual can live up to 35 years in the wild.
Conservation status: The IUCN lists the whalebill stork as Vulnerable. Current wild population estimates sit at about 5,000-8,000 individuals. Primary threats include poaching for the zoo trade and consumption, habitat destruction, and pollution.

Your heart thunders in your chest, lightning crackling through your spine as you lean against the dented RV. Rain pours down like a raging monsoon, raindrops like glass cutting into your skin as you shutter in your drenched sweater. You have no breath, no words in your constricted throat as your eyes stay wide, sheer terror coursing through your veins.
“Don’t move,” Joel whispers as he slips his hand around your wrist, his calloused fingers burning through your skin as the heat of his touch makes you feel a little less like you’re on thin ice.
His movements are slow, steady, composed as he pushes his broad back into your chest, his large frame towering over you as he covers you from view. From the large, starving T-Rex that stands mere inches from your face.
You feel its breath, its slimy drool as it dips its massive head and sniffs for its prey. Which is you. You are the prey, and it’s your own damn fault for going outside when it was dark. You knew it wasn’t safe. You knew. Joel warned you. Why didn’t you just listen?
The dinosaur's leathery skin collides against yours, just barely skimming its scratchy body against the surface of your arm as it lifts its head and lets out the loudest roar you’ve ever heard in your life.
Joel squeezes your hand and presses a little closer as he turns his head carefully and whispers against the shell of your ear. “Stay calm. It’ll go away as long as you're silent. Focus for me, sweetheart. Breathe,” he whispers gently against your skin as you feel his plush lips graze against yours, his pine scent filling your senses as it automatically calms your panicked body.
“Joel,” you whisper out terrified, your mouth brushing against his jawline where his soft salt-and-pepper scruff sits, the area you so hungrily lapped against earlier as he had you pinned against the little wooden table in the vehicle, rutting deep inside you as he painted you shades of white between your sticky thighs.
“It’s okay. I’ve got you. Just stay put, sweetheart. Ain’t gonna let anything happen to you,” he says adamantly as his deep, gravelly voice soothes every aching bone in your body.
Your foot catches on the side of a slippery rock and you freeze as you see the ravenous dinosaur turn toward you as its sharp claws dig into the sinking mud that turns into a dirty swimming pool. You hold your breath and close your eyes, trying your best not to make a single sound as Joel takes a step back, crowding your body as you feel his heat encase you as the rain continues to pound against your shaking body.
You can practically hear his soothing voice graze through your mind. Don’t make any movements. Breathe. You’re gonna be just fine.
You feel the rumbling of the jagged rocks underneath and tense your body as you wait for its teeth to rip into your flesh as it swallows you whole. You sink against the side of the RV just waiting for that awful moment when suddenly, you hear a distant roar in the distance. You feel the T-Rex turn toward the noise as it stomps off into the direction of the roar, saving you from what you thought was your watery grave. You hear the distant crashing of green vines and towering trees that fill the jungle. And then it’s quiet, only the sounds of pelting rain hitting the muddy ground.
You keep your eyes closed tight, your fingers flexed as you concentrate on not falling completely apart where you stand. You feel Joel try to pull you out of your misery, but his voice is far away. That deep rumble in a fog as you pretend this didn’t happen, that you didn’t nearly get yourself killed, along with Joel.
“Hey, sweetheart, open your eyes,” he says softly against your ear as you try to fight him off, keeping your eyes closed until you know it’s safe.
Joel shakes you, stirs you from your anxious thoughts and calls your name adamantly as he cups your face and whispers words of affirmation. “You’re alright. C’mon now. Open those pretty eyes for me.”
You bite your lower lip and slowly peel your eyes open and then gasp at the vision that stands before you. Joel stands there in the pouring rain, deft fingers clinging to your jawline as he cups your face affectionately, soft honey eyes staring straight into yours as rain pelts against his tanned skin. Water slips down his hair, his tousled curls slicked back by the rain as his green flannel sits soaked to his broad shoulders, his biceps flexing as he focuses solely on you.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have come out here so late. I knew better, and I…”
He cuts you off as he pushes you up against the cool metal of the RV, one hand lingering on your jawline as his other snakes around your hip. His lips crash against yours as you taste sugar and coffee, the perfect mix that sets your taste buds on fire as you drink him down hungrily.
You part your lips and allow him to slot his tongue in. He laps at the inside of your mouth, your tongues colliding together as you breathe in the smell of autumn leaves and rain water that drips off his lips onto yours.
The kiss is hungry, romantic as you slide your hands through his dripping wet curls, twisting your fingers around him so you can be that much closer to him. He lifts you up and wraps your legs around his torso as you pant into his mouth, his calloused fingers digging into your skin as it burns for him.
It’s like a dream, the pouring rain and muted sparks of lightning across the dark sky mixing together to make the heated kiss that much more romantic. You stay like that for minutes just getting lost in each other, lost in the flavor of him.
When you’re both completely out of breath, Joel sets you down on the ground and rests his forehead against yours as he chuckles lightly, his smile lighting up his honey eyes like Christmas lights that shine bright just for you.
“What’s so funny?” you ask as you push against his broad chest. “I nearly got us killed,” you groan as you sulk into the back of the RV.
Joel cups your chin and pulls your face up to his as he looks calmly at you with a soft smile playing on his lips. “Next time jus’ be a little more careful, sweetheart,” he murmurs as he dips down and places a gentle kiss on your cheek.
Before you can ask why he isn’t mad, he bends down and picks something up against the rocks that sit at your feet. “Besides, I wouldn’t have found this if it wasn’t for you,” he grins as he holds up a broken, sharp black claw that clearly came from the T-Rex.
Your eyes go wide as you trace the edge of the claw. “Is this…”
“Yeah, it sure is,” he beams as he slides his thumb over the sharp curve of the claw. “Came right from that Tyrannosaurus rex. Now I have physical proof. Exactly what I needed to collect to do some data research and some tests in the lab.”
His eyes light up like sparkling fireworks as he places the specimen in the pocket of his denim jeans. He hooks his arms around the back of your waist and brings you closer to his chest as he grazes his lips over the sheen of your rain covered lips.
You grip his damp flannel shirt and smile up at him as you brush your nose over his. “My smart paleontologist finally gets his real life dinosaur experience, yeah?” you hum as he brushes his wet lips over yours.
“Mhm, this smart scientist wants to go make love to his gorgeous assistant in the RV. Maybe take a warm shower first, make some hot coffee, maybe sit you on my lap so I can kiss you again and again and again.” He grabs a hold of your hair and presses his plush lips against yours once more as you fall into his arms, completely and utterly hooked on him. The man you fell head over heels for that first day in the lab.
When you pull your lips from his, he takes your hand and squeezes as he drags you back inside. “C’mon, sweetheart. Let’s get you back inside where it’s warm. Wanna go make love to my girl.”

so i may not be as much into fnaf now as i used to when i was younger but ive always been baffled that nobody has made a dinosaur themed fnaf fan game?? i may just be autistic for these sillies but i love the concept of it so much :D it makes sense for me because dinosaurs are popular with kids and popular in horror and irl there are a lot of dinosaur animatronics. so my concept here is that somewhere in utah fazbear entertainment collaborated with a fictional museum to make an educational dinosaur themed restaurant! also every dino robot is a species that can be found in utah! So first we have Utahraptor. It was made to show off more birdlike theories and was given a voicebox that can record voices to repeat them back like those toys that do it but due to being haunted can mimic voices. they slowly stalk the player and intentionally mess with them, toying with their prey. (this was made before the mimic lmao)
Tumblr media
Next is Camarasaurus! this animatronic is HUGE and in a kid's cove type area all to itself. because its so big the engineers only made its neck, head and tail robotic while its body is a plastic frame. At night it detaches its neck/head from its body and slithers through the vents. also here's a plushie of little dude!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next is Diabloceratops. this one is the most haunted and possibly possessed by a demon. its body moves in unnatural ways and it frequently will move with its limbs on backwards or upside down. it also has some kind of strange parasite type thing in it similar to ennard spaghetti. this design is probably my favorite and the one that freaks me out the most, inspired by the not-deer cryptid and demonic possession.
Tumblr media
And lastly the only withered animatronic, Akainacephalus ! :D they are inspired by slinky toys and poltergeists. this guy has a fnaf 2 puppet type role in the cast and sits right outside the office and doesn't move much unless its activated. i dont have much lore for them yet but i still love little dude! I also plan to add Ceratosaurus, Tenontosaurus, and Stegosaurus!
There is also Archie! He is an Archaeopteryx and the only member of the cast who is not found in Utah and is the education mascot of the museum :D he has an almost helpy like role and only shows up on posters, art, screens and as a plushie. :D
Tumblr media
I dont know if this game will ever come out but i wanted to share my concept somewhere on the internet :D

Fossil Novembirb: Day 8 - Raptors Are Back
Tumblr media
Once the Cenozoic had begun, the only remaining dinosaurs were modern birds. That means raptors (or dromaeosaurs) would never again stalk the Earth, right? Wrong! Raptor dinosaurs get their name from modern raptors: eagles, hawks, owls and the like; and they are in fact some of the closest relatives of birds. So during the Paleogene period when predatory birds started to radiate, they weren't reinventing being a raptor. They continued being raptors.
Palaeoglaux: An early owl from Germany's Messel Lake, about 40 million years ago. Unlike modern owls, it had strange ribbon-like feathers on its body, likely used in display.
Horusornis: A strange relative of hawks and eagles that lived in France 35 million years ago. Like modern harrier-hawks, it had flexible feet to dig out prey from tree cavities.
Antarctoboenus: An early relative of falcons found from Antarctica, about 35 million years ago. It may have prowled near the edges of giant penguin colonies.
Danielsraptor: Another early falcon from the 50 million year old London Clay formation. It had a large jagged beak and long legs, which helped it catch prey on the ground.
Dynamopterus: A relative of Seriemas and terror birds from Messel lake, about 40 million years ago. It likely caught small vertebrates from the forest floor.
Paleopsilopterus: One of the earliest known terror birds, it lived in Brazil about 50 million years ago. It was already flightless and similar to later small terror birds.
Bathornis: A distant relative of terror birds that was remarkably successful. This flightless predator and its relatives lived in North America from the Late Eocene to the Oligocene.
Messelastur: A falcon-like bird of prey that was closely related to parrots and passerines instead of raptors. It lived in Messel Lake about 40 million years ago.
Masillaraptor: A tiny true falcon also known from Messel Lake. It had a relatively long beak from a falcon, and it may have fed mostly on large insects.
Tynskya: Another small raptor related to parrots and passerines, this falcon-like predator lived around 50 million years ago. Its remains have been found in North America and Europe.

#Archovember Day 21 - Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis
While the three known species of Allosaurus were stalking across North America and Europe, China had its own top predator: the metriacanthosaurid carnosaur Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis. Yangchuanosaurus even survived the Jurassic Allosaurus, living from the Middle Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous. Similar to Ceratosaurus, it had a bony ridge on its nose with multiple hornlets and ridges.
Tumblr media
Like Allosaurus, Yangchuanosaurus was the apex predator at the time and would have had a similar diet of large dinosaurs like sauropods and ornithischians. They may have been pack hunters, as a single Yangchuanosaurus would have likely not been able to take down a sauropod alone. In the Shaximiao Formation, these would have been Protognathosaurus, Yuzhoulong, Omeisaurus, Datousaurus, Mamenchisaurus, Daanosaurus, and the club-tailed Shunosaurus. Ornithischian prey would have included stegosaurs like Huayangosaurus and Bashanosaurus, and neornithischians like Agilisaurus, Hexinlusaurus, and Xiaosaurus. Other theropods like Chuandongocoelurus, Xuanhanosaurus, Leshansaurus, Gasosaurus, and Kaijiangosaurus would have been both competitors and prey. It would have also lived alongside basal pterosaurs like Angustinaripterus, and pseudosuchians like Sunosuchus and Hsisosuchus. Life in the Suining Formation would have been similar, with the inclusion of the sauropod Qijianglong in the Early Cretaceous.

Children had begun drawing these markings on walls in paint, chalk, or blood, and the mark cannot be removed. People keep writing messages above them, reading, "REMEMBER [the child who drew it] BROUGHT THE MARK UPON US", always in red.
These markings brought upon what is, for all intents and purposes, the end of the world. Constant cloudcover covers the Earth, barely allowing sunlight and blocking out all moonlight. Torrential storms pour every night as umbratic avian dinosaurs the size of skyscrapers beam down what I can only describe as holy cleansing light from their mouths and eyes, razing anything it touches from existence without burning. These creatures hear incredibly well and generally locate prey (a loose term considering they raze without eating, vanishing by morning) by sound before they see them.
Helicoprion (a Permian era shark-like fish with a circular saw as its lower jaw) inexplicably fill the oceans now. Occasionally it rains blood, or snows ash. Large swaths of water are full of oil and glisten in the light. Predators stalk the Earth both day and night, eating the corpses left behind, but will absolutely attack living targets. They are entirely dependent on their sense of smell and touch.
The US government had previously allowed people to enter emergency bunkers to survive this apocalypse, but have inexplicably been bombing them from the inside, leaving survivors to scatter among the surface. A large group of survivors live inside of an abandoned Boeing aircraft hangar.
It rains almost every day, ranging from sprinkling to torrential thunderstorms. These angels always have the same composition, though sometimes are depicted crying without eyes. They stand forward, wings arced up slightly, long hair flowing down, and a D-shaped mouth with the head pointing slightly upward. There are barely any details.
This mark is known as The Mark of The Angel. They are always life-sized, always on walls.
The state of the rest of the world is much the same.
- From a dream I just had

Ava would overhear Sergio talking to someone on the phone, "She a bird, so I guess that make her a dinosaur. I don't know what kind, but I call 'er a leg-osaurus 'cause gotdamn, she tall..."
Tumblr media
"The Legosaurus stalks her prey, ready to spring an ambush..." Yes, she's saying that out loud while not-so-stealthily creeping towards Sergio.

OCEAN MAN, TAKE BY THE HAND-
We’re finally at not only my favorite episode of not only Season 2, but the entirety of Prehistoric Planet so far; OCEANS! As much as I love prehistory, I’m also a huge marine biology nerd, and have been since early childhood. I’ve always been a fan of marine animals, and the same applies for the sea creatures of the deep past. And when it comes to highlighting the various marine fauna of the Maasrichtian, this episode does a pretty good job with that. Aside from a few complaints that I wanna save for the end, I’m more than happy to say that this episode has many scenes that I consider to be some of my favorites in the entire series. Let’s “dive” in to see what I mean.
…I hope you laughed…
Tumblr media
Anyone else getting “Cruel Sea” vibes from this?
The episode begins with an animal that I’ve been hoping to see make an appearance since the very beginning; Phosphorosaurus. This was a species of mosasaur that has adapted large eyes. During the day, this creature hides in the various coral formations, while much larger mosasaurs stalk the depths in search of prey. However, the night is a much different story, as when the Mosasaurus is away, Phosphorosaurus will play. Y’know those large eyes that I mentioned? Well, they’re used to assist the animal while hunting in deep, dark waters, as the female mosasaur zips and darts her way through a school of lanternfish. As if this didn’t become clear enough, this scene is highly reminiscent of the Ophthalmosaurus from Walking with Dinosaurs. Think about it; both are marine reptiles that hide within coral reefs by day, and stalk prey by night. The latter part of the track used for this scene certainly helps with the whole vibe. And while I consider this to be nothing more than a coincidence, I really love how the scene plays out. As much as this series is more similar to Planet Earth, I’m all for similar vibes to the Walking with series in this show.

Chicken of the Sea, anyone?
The episode then cuts to the shallow waters of North America, where two familiar faces of the Late Cretaceous oceans finally make their debut within the PHP universe; Hesperonis and Xiphactinus! Alot of people are aware of these two species. One’s a man-sized diving bird with teeth in its beak, while the other is a gluttonous fish with the face of a bulldog. Once a school of these fish stop by a bunch of Hesperonis snacking on a baitball, things go well…at first, that is. Once enough baitfish have been gobbled up, the X-Fish (A name that David Attenborough lovely calls the Xiphactinus) start attacking their avian acquaintances. Another WW parallel in this episode is how both species did similar things between this episode, and the Hell’s Aquarium part of "Chased by Sea Monsters'’. The main difference between both is well… the lack of a certain time-traveling zoologist peeking in.
One last note to bring up for this scene is how the first draft of it (According to concept art made by Gaëlle Seguillon) also had Hydrotherosaurusin it. For those who aren’t aware, that was a species of elasmosaur that was discovered in California, and its name means “water beast lizard”. While it blows that we didn’t get to see this species show up in the final product, it’s still interesting, and I’d like to think we’ll see the creature in full for season 3 (Again, my season 3 idea may or may not be including this particular species).

Pictured here; Thousands of autism creatures going “Yippee!”
The episode then cuts to a tide pool on what will become Europe, where thousands of baby ammonites are hatching into the world. Not only are these lil’ guys adorable as a button, there’s so, SO many of them, which can be a problem when dealing with limited space. In order to get to deeper water, the ammonites straight-up use piles of their own masses like a living wave, allowing them to reach a deeper part of the pool. While a few dozen of these creatures are left stranded on the beach as food for other creatures (Including a pair of adorable Pyroraptor chicks), the vast majority of them reach the sea. Not alot for this segment, but it’s got some things going for it. The question then remains; What species do these tiny autism creatures belong to? That’s a question that’ll be answered in due time…

FREE WILLY!
In a very similar vibe to the T. Rex from the last episode, the next segment shows off how, despite its rather calm manner from Season 1, Mosasaurus was still a formidable predator to behold. Hunting a pod of Tuarangisaurus near a drop off, the giant lizard tries to ambush one of the elasmosaurs. The first attempt, while having a good start, doesn’t end with a kill, so the mosasaur has to try again. The trick is to curve your body into a c-like shape, use your tail to spring yourself off the seafloor, and do it in a manner where your prey can’t see you coming. We then witness one of the greatest visuals in a series already filled to the brim with great visuals, as the Mosasaurus breaches out of the water with a Turangisaurus in his jaws, very similar to how great white sharks do the same with seals. A good point to note is the fact that the PHP team commissioned a study on how mosasaurs like Mosasaurus hunted prey. The creature is not only big and strong, but also fast enough to catch its prey by surprise. The mere impact alone would kill its prey before they get eaten. The fact that the people behind this series commissioned info for the show that ties perfectly into the segment is incredible enough, but they absolutely KNEW how much the shot of the Mosasaurus breaching with its prey would be one of the most famous moments from this season, mainly due to its majesty and power. Not bad at all for a whale-sized Komodo dragon.

This is what dreams are made of. Only with alot more tentacles and shells.
The next segment after the sheer majesty of the Mosasaurus might be not only my favorite episode from this episode, but in the whole series. Y’know those baby ammonites from earlier? Well, a good few of them have survived months at sea, long enough to flow into a seagrass meadow full of their kind. Not only are some bizarre species like Baculites and Diplomoceras here (The latter essentially being a giant, swimming paper clip), the young ammonites we follow are revealed to belong to a species called Nostoceras. The shells of this species consist of a helix spire ending in a U-turn that faces the animal towards its own shell. Is it weird as hell? Yeah, sure. But like the living paper clip that is Diplomoceras, this was a real animal that existed. Alongside the visuals and major focus on the ammonites, another huge reason why I love this scene alot is the music. Prehistoric Planet, as a series, is no stranger towards banger tracks, but this one might be one of the most whimsical, majestic, and alien tracks of both OSTs for the show. Have a listen.
youtube
Imagine a fever dream with that sorta music.
The select choice of instruments used for the track, especially the use of techno noises, all help to solidify what’s basically the theme of the ammonites. Most other forms of paleomedia tend to either use these creatures as nothing more than background visuals, or have them be eaten by larger predators. In the nature of what it sets out to do, the show does these shelled goofs justice yet again. If anything, I wouldn’t be surprised if the show does the same for a species like Parapuzosia. While that particular ammonite species was only around for the early years of the Maasrichtian, it should be worth noting that these creatures grew as big as tractor tires, so I’m hyped to see if the show will do them justice too in the future.

With teeth like those, trips to the dentist must be weird.
The last segment of the episode travels to the South Pole, where pods of Morturneria arrive from their migration. Unlike other elasmosaur species, these guys not only can deal with the chilly water, they also have a unique way of getting food. You see the bristle-like teeth that the mother and her calf in the picture above have? They serve in filtering out small animals that these reptiles get from scooping up mouthfuls of polar mud from the seabed. The Morturneria not only have a feeding behavior similar to gray whales, they also peek out of holes in the sea ice like belugas. Pretty neat way to close out the episode, I must say.
youtube
And if you thought Jaws was scary.
The Uncovered segment for this episode goes more into depth (Pun not intended) about the way mosasaurs used speed to hunt. We’ve already covered alot of that during the Mosasaurus segment, but it’s still neat that the people who’ve worked on this show went and commissioned a scientific study into how these seagoing lizards were faster than we thought.
And that sums up all of the thoughts about my favorite Prehistoric Planet episode. All and all, I had a fun time with it, and I enjoyed the array of fauna shown. With that said, the only complaint that I can bring up is how the episode could’ve used more. Don’t get me wrong, between mosasaurs, ammonites, filter-feeding elasmosaurs, and bulldog-faced fish, we got a solid selection of marine animals in this episode. However, there were more than that in the seas of the Cretaceous. Animals like seagoing pterosaurs, rudist clams that played the role of coral reefs, a tube-nosed sea turtle in the form of Ocepechelon, massive filter-feeding fish like Bonnerichthys, polycotylid plesiosaurs, and especially SHARKS were also around during the Maasrichtian. As much as I wish they were in here too, I had a fun time with this episode as a whole.
We’re nearly at the end of our Season 2 review series, so join me again next time, as we cap off Prehistoric Planet’s second season with not a biome… but an entire continent? I dunno how they came up with that, but it’s gonna be a weirdly neat end to the season as a whole, so stay tuned for the finale of our second trip to the Maasrichtian!

Eight Menacing Saber-Toothed Creatures That Stalked the Earth Long Ago
From before the dinosaurs to the Ice Age, several mammals and their forerunners sported the iconic, curved teeth
Evolution has a fondness for saber-toothed creatures. Time and again, animals with elongated canine teeth have roamed the planet. The ferocious Smilodon of the Ice Age is among the most famous: a lion-sized cat with huge fangs that hunted ancient horses and bison across the Americas. But that’s only the tip of a saber-toothed history going back more than 250 million years. Most of the time, paleontologists use the term “saber-toothed” for carnivorous mammals who use long, flattened canine teeth to puncture or shear away the flesh of other creatures. But the designation isn’t quite so simple. Other mammals and even proto-mammals have been called saber-toothed even though they’re herbivores, using very similar teeth to tussle with each other rather than bite into prey. On that score, there are technically still some saber-toothed animals around today. Male musk deer compete with each other every mating season by fighting with their fangs...

The Seventh Victim (Robert Sheckley) "Takes place in a world in which society that has eliminated major warfare by allowing members of society who are inclined to violence to join The Big Hunt, a human hunting game in which participants alternate between being a "hunter" and a "victim". The protagonist is surprised to learn that his intended victim is a woman, something which he has never heard of. As he tracks said victim down, he begins to fall for her -- but will love or death rule the day?" (Spoiler under cut)
Jurassic Park (Michael Crichton) "Big hungry dinosaurs vs. small tasty humans. Muldoon commented that the raptors were cruelly intelligent and liked to hunt for sport as much as for food. It was actually justified because (as Malcolm realizes) the raptors discovered that humans are an easy meal and become a favored prey. Meanwhile, the Tyrannosaur seemed to be stalking Dr. Grant and the kids in particular, even leaving behind a Hadrosaur kill to pursue them down a river. At one point it's even waiting at the bottom of a waterfall with its jaws open, hoping they'll fall inside."
Spoiler: It's death. But not hers!

Now onto the fourth entry of Dinosaur Month! 🦕
Maxapeltills are patient predators that stalk stagnant swamps and defend their families from formidable foes.
The maxapeltill was inspired by crocodiles. I wasn't informed by any specific species or fossil discovery this time, but crocodiles are ancient and saurian enough I figured why not include my own version of a crocodile? All my other dinosaurs have been inspired by real life fossils discovered in Australia. You can learn more about Australian dinosaurs from the Australian Museum here.
I've always known crocodiles to be these really patient hunters that hide in murky water and wait for their prey to pass by before snapping them up, so I wanted my maxapeltill stat block to reflect that behaviour. When you want to time your abilities to act at a precise and crucial moment in dnd, you typically hold/ready your action. As a result, I gave the maxapeltill a bonus to readying its attacks with a reskinned Charge trait, so that it'd have a reason to lie in wait and ambush its prey.

Prehistoric Planet review: #3 - Ice Worlds
Tumblr media
“Ice Worlds” showcases the remarkable day-to-day lives of dinosaurs that lived and migrate to environments with extreme climates. We start things interesting with a pack of Dromaeosaurs stalking a group of hadrosaurs migrating and treading rapid waters like wildebeest crossing a river, only no crocodiles. It was nail-biting seeing babies getting stranded, trying to swim, and getting out of the water before drowning, but that’s the dromaeosaur’s idea.
I loved the design of the Ornithomimus with their mohawk-styled hairdo and it was fun watching how stragglers at a nesting ground tend to steal from others to make their own. We then watch a heard of Olorotitan as they travel to a nesting ground in a volcanic spring and avoid mosquitoes when they start spawning and it’s much worse than lake fly spawning.
It was cool seeing a Troodon take advantage of a forest fire in catching prey like marabou storks snatching bugs escaping from a bushfire in Africa. The best sequence of the episode is the ongoing battle between predator and prey as a herd of Pachyrhinosaurus flee from a pack of tyrannosaurs called Nanuqsaurus who use strategy than stealth to hunt through a snowstorm. Check out my earlier reviews on past episodes if you're seeing this now. 3.5/4 stars.

Zach's bullet cracks out the gun, followed immediately by a clang and wiz as it smacks the metal pedal and ricochet's off into the wild. The thing leaps like a Sinocalliopteryx pouncing out of tall grass to catch a bird, jaws snapping shut in mid air with a bang louder than the gun. It topples back toward Zach and Demon Tooth wobbling awkwardly along the ground, spinning along its jaws like a perverse child's top from the momentum. It finally topples and slides the last few inches so it's uncomfortably closer than Zach estimated.
It was clearly rigged with more force than is usual to have come so far. Possibly the springs were meant for a bigger Spinotrap, though Zach can't say that he knows of any bigger kind of trap.
In the quiet that follows that much noise, Demon Tooth lowers her head to sniff loud and disdainfully at the thing, like she's half expecting Zach to expect her to eat it and she is not inclined to humor him in this foolishness.
((And below is a Sinocallopteryx, a feathered dinosaur which is thought by some scientists to have possibly been an ambush predator in the manner of big pouncy cats. "'Dr. Bell said the dinosaurs were wily hunters and that cats are a good comparison because they are "incredibly stealthy, stalking their prey before pouncing.'" "...[the research team he was on] found the ground dwellers had been feasting on primitive birds and flying dinosaurs when they died." "The Canadian-Chinese team found a Sinornithosaurus, a feathered flying dinosaur measuring about 3 feet 4 inches, inside the stomach of one of the fossils from northeast China and preserved remains of two primitive crow-sized birds in the other."))

#4 The Wild Hunt
I was today years old when the twins & I found out that the Wild Hunt is actually a thing!
It seems that dealing with the faeries got its attention. Admittedly, when they first showed up at my place I didn't know if we were to be hunters or prey.
When chaos entranced the cats & I; we were hunters, & hunt we did. We stalked the mightiest of elk. We leaped across time & battled the strongest of dinosaurs. We kept pace with birds, & out-swam the fish. With fang, claw, fin, wing & gun we hunted the world!
Were it not for the cords around our necks, it would have been the freest we ever felt. Time was meaningless, but after a lot of it we became aware that we were really prisoners in this. We knew that we had to escape, & began working out a plan.
We waited until the time & place were just right, then cut our cords & ran. (it was not a sophisticated plan). We were running from predators, so they chased. However, we got away before our enhanced forms fell away.
I'm sure that won't eventually come back to haunt us.
