Kaire, Castor and Polydeukes! ⚡
Tumblr media
Saviors of storm-wracked ships, tamers of horses, and protectors of travelers, the Dioskouroi (Divine Twins) appear to sailors during storms in the guise of St. Elmo's fire--an electrical discharge which creates a glow about the mast-head and rigging of ships. Every year on July 15th the ancient Romans celebrated the feast of Castor and Pollux, their Roman counterparts.
"Come hither, leaving the island of Pelops, strong sons of Zeus and Leda; appear with kindly heart, Castor and Polydeukes, who go on swift horses over the broad earth and all the sea, and easily rescue men from chilling death, leaping on the peaks of their well-benched ships, brilliant from afar as you run up the fore-stays, bringing light to the black ship in the night of trouble."

Castor and Pollux. Source: Britannica
The Rival Twins
The Dioscuri, who were never separated from one another in any adventure, became the pride of Sparta. Castor was famous as a soldier and tamer of horses, Polydeuces as the best boxer of his day; both won prizes at the Olympic Games. Their cousins and rivals were no less devoted to each other; Idas had greater strength than Lynceus, but Lynceus had such sharp eyes that he could see in the dark or divine the whereabouts of buried treasure. (The Rival Twins, The Greek Myths by Robert Graves pp 245-252).
The Dioscuri were the sons of Leda, Queen of Sparta. Castor was the son of King Tyndareus and Polydeuces was the son of Zeus. The two young men developed a fierce rivalry with their cousins, the twins Idas and Lynceus. Both sets of twins patched up their quarrel in order to carry out a cattle raid in Arcadia, but fell out again over the division of the spoils. In the subsequent fight, Idas killed Castor while Polydeuces despatched Lynceus. Idas went on to severely wound Polydeuces but before he could strike the death blow, Zeus saved his son by obliterating Idas with a thunderbolt. The grief-stricken Polydeuces could not stand to carry on living without his brother and persuaded his father to resurrect and deify Castor. The Dioscuri then entered Olympus. Zeus also set the brothers’ images in the stars as The Twins.
Graves maintains that both sets of twins are memories of the sacred king and his tanist - sometime rival, sometime successor, sometime advisor.

Random Greek Deity Facts
- Artemis has been associated with horses in the past.
- Ares has associations with owls.
- There are ancient gravestones with reliefs on them that historians still cannot tell if the art is of Dionysus or Jesus.
- It is common for historians to struggle identifying if a statue is of Artemis or Apollo because they often look so much alike.
- Hephaestus is a god of fire.
- Maia, the Mother of Hermes, was thought to assist in raising both Dionysus and Hephaestus.
- Hypnos is said to live in a massive cave, sleeping with thousands of his sons.
- Rather than blood, Greek gods are said to have something called Ichor running through their veins; no one is quite sure what "Ichor" actually is.
- Both Apollo and Artemis are deities of light; it is not just Apollo. Along with this, it is believed Leto may also be a goddess of light.
- It is commonly believed that the hyacinth flower is not actually the flower Hyacinthus was infamously transformed into; most sources seem to agree that it was likely either an iris or a larkspur.
- At one point in the Dionysiaca, Dionysus wages a war against India. The goddess Rhea is said to have gathered troops for him, and Zeus was said to have been the one to task Dionysus with going to war in order to allow him to join the gods on Mount Olympus.
- Demeter's chariot is pulled by two giant winged serpents; she has literal dragons pulling her around, and no one is talking about it.
- The Python was a child of Gaia, and before Apollo took up the Oracle in Delphi, there was actually an Oracle with Gaia in that location.
- The twins Castor and Pollux, who made up the Gemini constellation, were commonly worshipped throughout ancient Greece under the title of the "Dioscuri" or "Dioskouroi".
- Also regarding the Dioskouroi, the name "Castor" ("Kastor") may translate to "Beaver".
- The famous epithet "Paean" of Apollo was also listed on an ancient Mycenaean tablet that listed the names of separate deities. It is, therefore, possible that Paean was once a separate god who later became associated/merged with both Apollo and his son Ascelpius.
- Besides being an epithet, a Paean was also a type of devotional chant/song that was sung in honor of Apollo. Some ancient sources claim that the event of singing a Paean could actually be quite loud, involving clouds of stomping/banging and movement.
- The masculine version of Hekate's name, "Hekatos", was an epithet for the god Apollo; both names can be translated to "worker from afar".
- The first record of the more "traditional" view of a werewolf comes from the Greek myth about King Lycaon, when Zeus transformed into a wolf for ten years as punishment for tricking the gods into consuming human flesh (yes, you read that right).
- In the myths, Zeus and Hermes have a lovely Father-Son bonding trip of destroying an entire village (except for one home) for not showing either of the disguised gods hospitality as poor travellers.
- Both Apollo and Zeus were seen as gods who purified "blood-guilt" - a condition which was caused by the killing of another person and required immense purification.
- Cerberus is described as a fully sentient being who can communicate as other immensely powerful children of Gaia could, meaning he is akin to the gods in terms of intelligence rather than being like an overgrown dog.
- Hermes is said to be the inventor of offerings, specifically animal sacrifices.
- One origin of the Pegasus was Poseidon and Medusa doing the devil's tango.
- There is a tale that claims Hermes to be the one who granted Aesop his knowledge of fables.
- According to some ancient sources, Cerberus has as many as fifty heads, a mane of snakes, the claws of a lion, and a snake tail.
- Iris was not only the goddess of rainbows but was also the personal messenger of Hera and was prominently featured in The Iliad delivering many messages on behalf of the Olympian gods.
- Eros has been depicted as the child of Aphrodite and Ares, the child of Ouranos and Aphrodite, the child of solely Aphrodite, the child of Poros and Penia, the child of Ouranos and Gaia, the child of Zephyrus and Iris, and a primordial being who simply came into being. So, where did Eros actually come from? Your guess is as good as any.

Fate/Grand Order COMIC à la carte PLUS! SP Showdown!
Ashiya Douman VS Dioscuri
TL & Typeset by yours truly.
Right, so, edited to add AU's commentary below.
Au's commentary
【Douman】
I think that due to his position as an onmyouji and as a bonze, he places an emphasis on formality and rituals. Whatever his motivation may be, he can't help but go through these motions (though there are times that he stops abrubptly), it's like "if he has to do it anyway, it's more interesting to do it this way." In addition, it was a confrontation against the Dioscuri.
The Dioscuri, gods who connect with humans through "rituals" that play an important role in religion and faith, and whose way of being can be influenced and altered by man, in contrast with Ashiya Douman, one who blasphemes even gods themselves, one who guides humans by "looking up to the heavens and divining the stars." The ritual was brought about when Douman thought that he wanted to perform the steps to carry out the purifying ritual (monomi^), but he did not want to be the one to be shut in, so he made someone else disappear instead.
(^物忌み - monomi; an onmyou practice of shutting oneself inside the house on inauspicious days to avoid misfortune.)
In simpler terms, it's an act to purify one's body and soul by cutting off impurities, as such, Castor was furious at not only being suddenly separated from his sister, but also for being judged as "defective." (Although Castor's anger was at the forefront, his bond level is assumed to be high, because he rushed into the scene, out of concern regarding the abnormal situation, and for his Master's safety.)
【Dioscuri】
・Castor's Saint Graph is deficient, due to his separation from Pollux (derived from the Dioscuri interlude). ・In addition, it was difficult to stop Douman with a god's power, as due to Douman's spell, it was a situation where no divinity other than Douman's was functioning.
As for the "stronger truth (for the Master)" that Holmes mentioned, at this part, the Master was reminded of Dioscuri Castor's return gift from Valentine's, St. Elmo's Fire. One aspect of the Dioscuri is being the guardians of navigation, the guiding light, the "star" shining in the heavens.
Castor's return gift, based on the circumstances of the event scenario, is interpreted here as a blessing given by the Dioscuri only to the Master. A "truth" that was clear to the Master, that even if no one else knew about it, without any doubt, they have received this blessing. At that moment, the Master, who is the key figure in this divine ritual, overrode the "Dioscuri" by strongly recognizing them as "stars" rather than the "twin gods". Thus, this is the process that allowed Pollux to be revived.
【The Master of Hell】
Though it has various meanings, it revolves mainly about Seimei's episode with the "Taizanfukugun", and the "Taizanfukugun Festival^".
(^An onmyou festival, revering "Taizanfugun", a god from ancient China that was syncretized with the Buddhist king Enma, and was believed to rule over human lifespan and fortune. It was a popular festival among court nobles during the Heian period, and it was the festival that the onmyou family, the Abe clan, excelled at.)
Taizanfukugun is a major deity in onmyoudo, in Buddhism, considered as one of the ten kings of hell (sometimes equated with King Enma). The main implication of this image is that he is able to interfere with even the forces of hell and use them as if they were his own.
In this sense, Seimei should be the one who's more suited for hell, so what point would there be if the Master falls into hell? Would there be any meaning after that? In the first place, the Master would certainly not fall without a fight. And if they decided to, they would jump in without hestation, which is for Douman, also infuriating.
How does Douman see the greatest onmyouji? Did he collectively likened that person to the emotions swirling around him? Was it through the story of that person's resurrection, their travels through the world of that time, that equated to them easily conquering even Hell? Or is it something else entirely?
Whether he gives it his all or not, I feel that for Douman, there seems to be a fundamental ambiguity in self-affirmation, making him think "If I'm like this, then that person must be even better", regardless of Douman's own level of ability.
【Companion/Attendant】
When the Master pledged that they were determined to take Douman with them, even if it meant dragging him along with them, I wanted to show a "contrast" that showed their difference from Seimei, expressed through the rather exaggerated "Master allowed themselves to be accompanied / Seimei will never allow himself to be accompanied."
It's like "I said I liked apples, but he didn't say he liked apples. So he must hate apples.", something to that extreme. From Douman's point of view, that's how it must have been.
Furthermore, most of the passages in which Douman refers to Seimei are all from his perspective.
-The following is a digression -
・Sanson and Asclepius These two were the ones originally from Showdown Part 1. Originally, there was no scene in which these two talked to each other, but I hope those who read the previous comic will notice it.
This too, is a story about "humans" and "demigods (children of Apollo)".
(By the way, I was able to draw Asclepius in his second ascension for this FGO comicalized series.)
・At the beginning, I wanted to make the Master upset by making (Douman) say, "I killed her,'' but the response got boring so I changed it up.
・Buddha's great vows - this is the Bodhisattva's vast desire to save all sentient beings. In short, this was a hugely sarcastic remark towards the Master, as if to say "Your determination and your theatrical declaration are both truly admirable!" However, it also suggests that even if they would have to get various people to help their cause, the Master might just be able to pull it off.
・I was able to finish Holmes' panels in just one day.
・The last panel I drew was Douman's left side.

Castor and Pollux are actually so sad.
So in the riordanverse, Castor and Pollux are Dionysus’s twin sons.
In mythology, Castor and Pollux were the twin (half and full) brothers of Helen of Troy (and Clytemnestra). Zeus had turned into a swan and uhh… slept with their mother, Leda, the Queen of Sparta, who had also slept with her husband, Tyndareus, the King of Sparta, so the following quadruplets that were born had different fathers. Castor and Clytemnestra were the children of Leda and Tyndareus, and Helen and Pollux were children of Leda and Zeus. Castor and Pollux were identical twins despite having different fathers, and they were inseparable and became known as the Dioscuri.
Long story short, Castor ends up being killed and Pollux is so distraught that he asks Zeus to kill him so that he could be with his brother, or he asks Zeus to bring Castor back to life (the sources in my admittedly brief research varied between the two). In the end, Zeus agrees to split Pollux’s immortality between the two, allowing them to be together in the sky as the constellation Gemini for half of the year, and reside in the Underworld for the other half. They are the Gemini twins.
So, we already know that Rick Riordan likes to make parallels to different Greek Myths with his characters (ex: Clarisse and Silena paralleling Achilles and Patroclus), and this is another sad instance. He gave Dionysus, the son of Zeus, twin sons named Castor and Pollux, and then killed Castor in the Battle of the Labyrinth.
I just wish we got to see more of Pollux’s grief in the aftermath. We get a little bit, when right before they burn the shrouds Pollux goes up to say a few words but can't, but I kind of wish we got to see some of the heartbreaking devotion in Pollux that was in his mythological counterpart.
Anyway, Rick was really out there writing tragedy into even the background characters that had only been mentioned maybe two or three times before.

[ID: Two page comic of Lemon and Tangerine from Bullet Train, with text from the Wikipedia page on the brothers Castor and Pollux and Nemean Odes 10 throughout the two pages. The first page reads, “Castor and Pollux (or Polydeukes) are twin half-brothers” over two frames of Lemon and Tangerine fighting over whether they killed 16 or 17 people, then “Castor and Pollux are sometimes both mortal, sometimes both divine.” There is a drawing of Lemon saying, “I never bleed.” in stylized text, then the Wikipedia entry continues: “One consistent point is that if only one of them is immortal, it is Pollux.”
The second page is in two halves, the first half being Tangerine taking off his pendant to give to Lemon. Some parts of the drawing are in colour, some are in greyscale. Over it, the Wikipedia entry reads: “Returning to the dying Castor, Pollux was given the choice by Zeus of spending all his time on Mount Olympus or giving half his immortality to his mortal brother.” The excerpt from the Nemean 10 follows: “‘But nevertheless I grant you your choice in this. If you wish to escape death and hated old age, and to dwell in Olympus yourself with me and Athena and Ares of the dark spear, you can have this lot. But if you strive to save your brother, and intend to share everything equally with him, then you may breathe for half the time below the earth, and for half the time in the golden homes of heaven.’ When Zeus had spoken thus, Polydeuces did not have a second thought.” The second half of the page is a drawing of the scene where Lemon sits next to Tangerine’s dead body. Both are covered in blood and the sunrise is shining on them through the train’s window. The last bit of the Wikipedia entry reads: “The brothers became the two brightest stars in the constellation Gemini (”the twins”): Castor (Alpha Geminorum) and Pollux (Beta Geminorum).” End ID.]

this bit here is damn brilliant. holmes advises guda to impose on the dioscuri their own stronger Truth, to free pollux from douman's clutches by calling onto their nature as st. elmo's fire— twin stars that guide mankind on its journey. what remains unsaid is that this is also what they do with douman. albeit with much less intentionality.
douman reveals later in the chapter the nature of this scheme as a ritual to establish their core. servants don't possess innate vessels, they are shaped by the burning desires of the world, they say. and so they throw the question to the one who shall grant them their vessel— guda. he is one who feeds on the lamentations of others, a servant such as himself has no right to walk in the wake of their righteous path. then what does guda have in store for him? which of their desires shall serve to mould him?
and guda's answer is simply that, regardless of douman's actions, they will drag him down and take him with them. christening him as a servant who does not need to change his nature so long as he walks right beside them, thus guda "kills" and remakes him by etching their Truth into the depths of his saint graph.
what makes this brilliant is that it gives further weight to a couple of things. why douman's 3rd ascension is their rakshasa king form— because this is the form guda kills them in (through danzou's hands). why douman insists on calling guda "my master," and why, whenever guda calls out their name since their summoning—always douman, never limbo—they will always answer, yes. yes, i am your douman. because a servant can have different permutations throughout their innumerable summonings, but only fujimaru ritsuka shall have this ashiya douman.

It's the first day of Gemini szn!♊👬
For this piece Castor and Pollux are representing the communicative twins🗣️ I am also following a sky theme for the air signs, with Gemini having the aurora borealis🌌 I was a lil worried that this wouldn't work but I'm so pleased with the results!
Also known as the Dioscuri, the twins Castor and Pollux were born to Leda of two different fathers (the former Tyndareus king of Sparta, and the latter Zeus), which is a common quirky theme in Greek myth. They went around the ancient world performing the usual "heroic" deeds, including rescuing their half-sister Hellen after the Trojan war. Since Pollux had divinity through Zeus, he asked his father to share it with Castor and then they were transformed into the Gemini constellation🌌
✨Prints and merch: https://rdbl.co/41Gq3is
This Greek myth astrology series features each sign represented by a character or event in mythology (whether canonically related to the sign or not - I'm vibing). I'm currently finishing up the water signs, but who should I create next?

House of the Dioscuri,  Via di Mercurio. Pompeii.
View of the peristyle and a cloudy afternoon
Photographer: Nicola Meluziis
From ancient Greek Dióskouroi, "sons of Zeus", they were the legendary twins Castor and Pollux.
According to Roman legend, both commanded the cavalry of the nascent Republic of Rome against the Latin League, achieving victory for the Romans.
A fresco depicting Castor and Pollux gave the house its name. The fresco is in the Archaeological Museum of Naples.
