Did anyone catch the new Sonic Commercial? The restaurant company released a commercial using Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody" (ft Timbaland / written by Static Major).
THIS here is one of many reasons why #TeamAaliyah fought so hard to #FreeAaliyahsMusic.
Aaliyah's music wasn't just missing from streaming services like Spotify, it wasn't permitted to be commercially licensed out period. That meant no cameo audios in movie/TV show scenes, no radio airways, etc. If it wasn't AANBAN, it wasn't allowed to be utilized. It was truly a dark-era for Aaliyah fans.
Now that her music is available, we will see more and more of companies and Tv Show/Movie production companies wanting to utilize Aaliyah's material for their projects. How exciting!
Shoutout to @_whoisshe for the headsup on this!
Thank you @sonicdrivein

New Music Review Out Now On My Latest Single "Who" with Atum Hunter Read Below ⬇️⬇️⬇️
Introduction
Here’s my review of your track. I will first listen through the whole track, and then give you my honest opinion on the musical elements within the track, and the track as a whole. After that, I will give you some pointers on how / if it can be improved in any way.
Before we continue, I want you to know that my intention is to be 100% honest. Some of my clients may feel let down if the feedback is not what they were hoping for. As a music producer, it’s important to embrace all kinds of feedback, and especially negative feedback. Humans learn from their mistakes, but if no one is pointing them out for you, then you will just end up repeating them over and over. So please, understand that if I say that something doesn’t sound quite right, I do so not because I want to be mean, but because I want to help you improve.
Now that we have cleared that up, it’s time to get to the review:
My First Thoughts
There’s an old saying: You never get a second chance to make a first impression. I’ve listened to this once now and my first impression here is very good. The track is pretty much release worthy as it is; although, there are just 4 minor things that I just want to highlight for you. But overall, you definitely did a good job!
Melodic elements
The melodic elements here are very good. You have a solid harmonic progression as the foundation of the track. The vocals on top are very good and work well with the various melodic elements like the piano. The effects work well at spicing things up, and the hats provide good movement overall, supporting the main drive nicely. These kinds of hats are quite “standard” for a track like this. There’s usually not a whole lot of movement in the low mid region, but instead you tend to have those rolling hats that provide a fairly complex pattern up top. This works well.
The kick and the bass work well overall, and provide good energy and good warmth in the low-end. They could pack more of a punch though. Not much, but a little bit. I think there’s room for some more energy overall in the low-end, as this genre tends to be quite bass-heavy.
The only thing I think can be improved here are as follows:
The piano itself is quite nice and sounds quite natural overall. During the intro though, It’s a bit tiny. It’s probably intentional, but still, I can’t help but think that it would have been nice with some more low-end harmonics there, so perhaps adding extra root notes in the chord progression, to sit at least an octave below where it’s right now would work well. That would help add some more warmth and energy from the piano during the intro.
The next thing I noticed is the vocals. It is very good overall, and I like the idea with the delay here and there. This helps fill space and add some variation. I think it’s a bit fast though and perhaps a slower setting would work better so that you just have a few repetitions.
I also think you could have spiced up the vocal more by adding some layering. For example around 00:53 where it goes “light fades out”. That’s a pressure point right there, and you could for example copy that line, make it unique and pitch it down an octave, or just make it darker (whatever works best) and have it support the main one in the background so that it sounds fatter and more massive during those pressure points. This is a technique often used in rap, and it generally works quite well.
Here you’ve opted for a delay effect to spice it up a bit after it ends instead. I can’t help but think that experimenting with something like this would be a good idea.
Besides that, I don’t really have any more suggestions here. I think this all works quite well and I find this quite enjoyable to listen to, and that’s ultimately the most important thing. All in all I have to say good job here!
Track Structure
I’d like to hear some more warmth and energy from the piano in the intro, but that’s about it. The arrangement itself is fairly standard for a track like this, and the energy distribution works very well overall. The transitions and bridges work well too, and I can’t really find anything wrong here. The track is just under 3 minutes, and that’s a good length for a track like this these days (tracks tend to get shorter due to the ever declining attention span of the average listener).
Mixing
When it comes to the mixing, I think there’s room for slightly more power in the low-end as this genre tends to be quite low-end heavy.
The vocals are nice and are sitting nicely in the mix. It is also quite consistent. I’m not quite sure about that delay effect, it sounds a bit out of sync and perhaps it’s just too fast, but I like the idea. A shorter one might work better, or alternatively try the layering idea I mentioned above.
The hats are cutting through nicely here, and the top-end percussion and the low-end seem to be well balanced overall, and I’ve always found that whenever that’s the case everything else tends to fall nicely into place in between.
The piano and the effects are also sitting well in the mix. Nothing is obviously too loud or too quiet in relation to anything else here.
When it comes to mastering, this is also working quite well. The mix is quite dynamic, and there is room for more compression here as this genre tends to be fairly compressed in general. That said, there’s nothing wrong with keeping it dynamic, because I’m all for dynamics personally.
The master peaks at 0 dB true peak, which is not ideal. You should always add at least 0,1 – 0,3 dB headroom on the final master itself to prevent problems later on when the file format is converted, which will typically happen when it is uploaded to the various streaming platforms.
Summary
All in all, I found this track quite enjoyable to listen to. The melodic elements and the arrangement work very well as a whole. The sounds used are good and the vocals are also good. The mixing and mastering are also good. There are some minor things here and there that I think could be improved, but overall, I have to say good job!
Note that my suggestions are things you can try. Keep in mind though, that not everything I’ve said will necessarily make your track better. Some of it may work and some of it won’t. You will have to try things out and see for yourself what works and what doesn’t.
It’s easy for a bystander to listen to something and say that you should do this or that, but things don’t always work out the way you picture it in your head. So, it’s ultimately up to the producer to make the call.
Good luck with the track, and have a nice day!
Best regards,
