Art Hacks for Physical Disabilities!!
I know art can be inaccessible to physically disabled people for a lot of reasons, and I think art should be accessible to everyone, so here’s a couple of the things I found to help for a few different issues you may face that stop you participating!
I have a link to all these items (UK) in my link tree!!
IMAGE DESCRIPTION
Slide one: illustration of a white woman with pink hair, wearing a pink outfit, sitting in a power wheelchair, looking at the viewer with thumbs up. Text Reese “hacks to make art more accessible”
Slide two: illustration of three different kinds, using three different types of pencil grips. One hand uses a circular grip. 100 is a large, rectangular grip. Another uses a grip that is ergonomic and fit into the hand. Main text reads “Paul, grip, strength and dexterity”. Subtext reads “there are loads of different types of pencil, grips or design for different disabilities and conditions. Increasing the width of the pencil can give more texture for a better grip using a pencil with a thicker with also reduces the amounts of pressure needed to hold a pencil you can make your own using items like pool noodles. KT tape an air dry clay. You can also put these groups on things like paint brushes.“
Slide three: illustration of a hand using a tool that looks like a wrist support with a paintbrush connected to it text next to it reads “this talk next a paintbrush to your hand in a way that means you don’t need to hold the paintbrush with your fingers and you will need to move your arm around“ on the bottom right hand corner is in photograph of a guided hand device. Text read “regarded hand as a tool designed to reduce the need for moving your hands and fingers and relies on the movement of your shoulder and upper arms and can be used with different materials like paintbrushes, pencils, pens and styluses.

Illustration of an iPad pillow with a iPad in it is next to text that reads “iPad pillows, put your tablet at an easier to access level when sitting or lying down“. In the bottom left hand corner is an illustration of a girl sitting in bed in her pyjamas with a pillow behind her and a bed table as she is drawing. On the left hand side is a photograph of a bed table with the text reading “bed tables are used to give you a flat tire up surface while in bed, and are often height adjustable”. In the bottom right hand side is a bedsit, a pillow with the text underneath, reading “ bedsitters of specially shaped pillows that you put behind you in bed to help you set up and give you a soft surface to lean back on”.

On the left hand side is a photograph of the document holder with the text “document holders put your paper at an angle to help prevent crane in your neck down”. On the right hand, middle side is an illustration of someone using a armrest and on the bottom left hand side is a photograph of the armrest. Text next to them reads “economic arm rests clip onto your table or desk and give you a surface you lean you’re forearms or elbows on. Here are a bunch of important facts about service dogs in the United States! Many people don’t know the real laws about these amazing dogs that help disabled people every day–so please share this far and wide to spread the word.
Remember, all our product sales help support service dog handlers and organizations. We donate 10% of profits and include educational service dog fact cards with all US shipments. I’m also a disabled artist, and the best way to empower disabled people is to financially support them!
💜(Due to health complications, I’ll be shutting down my shop on Dec 31st–so all decks and art prints will only be available until then. After that, I never plan on selling the Barkana deck again btw!) 💜
P.S. These service dog facts are specific to US laws, not worldwide.

informational comic abt my main disability, PNES! I've found that little to no one I talk to knows abt non epileptic seizures, so I brought together some information that I would've really liked to see before I was diagnosed.
IMPORTANT EDITS: - conversion disorder is now known as functional neurological disorder and my comparison was oversimplification. FND is very real, and has its own unique struggles. PNES is closely linked to it in awareness and communities. - not all PNES episodes are caused by emotional stress. we still don’t know exactly why that is for each person. - the cause is HEAVILY debated. I just chose the prevailing theory at the time of writing the comic that seems to make the most sense.

🧚🏾‍♂️ Sprites of the Orchard! ✨ Join us in celebration of Disability Pride Month for our first open mic!
The theme is "disabled voices" - we're looking for poetry that reflects the experience of living as a disabled / neurodivergent person.
Disability is a self-defined and widely expansive identity, so please don't self-reject - we'd love to hear your poems!

You can now buy my painting from Redbubble!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, I created a Redbubble shop just before Christmas, but it was just some abstract digital prints, as I had no way to properly scan my physical artwork.
This week that changed! I got myself a new scanner, scanned in one of my favourite paintings, and digitally cleaned it up (it got damaged by mould in the Second Worst Flat).
So now, 'Yes, It Hurt When I Fell' is available to buy alongside my very cool, extremely seventies, digital designs!
I'm gonna work on gradually digitising my other paintings and drawings of reasonable quality.
If anyone has some spare cash and would like to own some art, this disabled artist would really appreciate it! Note that Redbubble does postcards and stickers as well as the more expensive items!

Since its the end of disability pride month, I wanted to celebrate by posting a body study I did of myself.
I have been way more healthy since I was able to accept my disabilities since I was forced to push through them growing up (making them WAY worse as you could expect).
But, it's day's like the day I was able to take the picture that was my ref, when I have more energy to do things, where I can't help but to morn when I was more able bodied.
Tumblr media
TW: mention of thoughts of death, parental abuse, far right sheltered religious abuse, rambling thoughts, disabled abuse + struggles surrounding said topic below.
Growing up I always had that impending doom that I knew I would end up a wheelchair, and that feeling grew every year I grew older. Because of that I was forced (mostly by my parents but also partly by myself) to just keep pushing through it because I was "lazy".
I accomplished a lot and did a lot of things I will never be able to again due to how severe my disabilities have gotten and there was a large chunk of time where I was really thinking about ending it due to leaving an abuse and toxic family structure and loosing my only support structure. Since then we've used absurdism to live by since it just makes things easier and healthier.
Normal days, mostly bedridden besides using the restroom, bathing, and if we're luck, make our own food.
On a decent day, we are able to make our own food, get to the computer to draw, stay awake for more than 4 hours at a time.
But good days, good days are the days where we feel like we did back then. Nothing stopping us besides the severe blood pressure change from the POTS. The day after when we are recovering is when that wound just tears back open again, raw, refusing to let our mind get on to a different topic till we have to force ourselves to go to sleep while crying knowing that we can't run, dance, hike, climb trees, or do preforming arts any more.
All the "if only's" running through our head. "If only they believed me", "why couldn't she see past her anti-vax beliefs to get me real help", "how could they not believe instead of believing I was possessed", "why are they forcing me", "why are they making it worse", "why do they think I'm lazy when I can't stand for long periods of time", "why are they only praying over me instead of getting me help", "why does it turn into a lecture every time I ask for help", "if only I had been able get help sooner, would it be as bad as it is now" etc, etc.
It's just hard. Being bed bound is hard. Being isolated most of the time is hard. But we make do and at least it's better than when we were young since at least now we are finally healing, if only just a bit.
