Some more edits including the basement and attic this time with some tweaks to the other rooms. Krobus has since moved in so I did a little decorating in his nook. Oh and I got a second cat. We now live with Void and Kiki 😸

I’ve just found an affordable(!) adaptive controller for the switch (and other things) that looks really promising for me. I found it for less than £30 so I’ve ordered one to give it a go.
I really struggle with pressing small buttons and anything on the back or side of a controller (like trigger buttons). So I’m really limited to games that either don’t use them in any situation where time is of the essence or don’t use them at all.
This controller has all the buttons on the front and close together and claims to not need as much pressure to activate them. If it works as well as I hope it will open up so many games for me!
It isn’t modular so you can’t add anything like extra switches (as in buttons, not the console) like you can with the more expensive adaptive controllers, but its the cheapest adaptive controller I’ve ever come across and looks like a good option if the adaptions work for you.

I screenshotted the ask bc I blocked them bc I don't think they'd listen anyway and I don't need anymore of this shit in my inbox on my birthday
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What a dumbass ask. It's not just MY experience. Its MILLIONS of peoples experience. (65 million is the estimate). I don't give a fuck if I can see the pores of a character or if theres perfect physics for trees blowing in the wind. Our wheelchairs are parts of ourselves and it is Devastating when seemingly no one cares about including us while marketing their games as the most diverse game ever made.
I don't give a fuck if the "physics are complicated" EVERYTHING in a video game is complicated. Making a realistic gun that lights up and has every mechanism perfectly rendered is complicated. Video games are complicated. Y'all would rather have 5000 animated clothing options than include 1 wheelchair. I'm not asking for them to include like, something benign and just for me. I'm not asking everyone to put one specific hairstyle that shoots fireworks out of my head in every single game. This isn't a frivilous selfish thing to want. This is something that MANY people are asking for. A dad asking modders if someone could make a wheelchair mod for their young daughter who's in one and wants to play Minecraft as herself. Disabled Stardew valley players who see all the amazing mods on nexus but there's like, I think only one mod that adds wheelchairs? (And yet theres hundreds that ADD A WHOLE NOTHER MAP and NPCS and yes, VEHICLES AND BODY MODS)
Also? I still play video games? I don't boycott any game that doesn't have wheelchairs?? I just get kinda sad and go oh well
Also, I'm not going to learn an entire new field that people literally go to college for years to master to make my own game. I'm out here trying to keep my area's streams from being filled with concrete and sewage. It's insulting to game developers to say "why don't you just make your own game idiot" as if it's that simple.
I'm disabled + chronically ill. I'm already doing too much and you want me to add on making an entire game to that? There's no logic in it. Like you're giving me the choice of "make my own game or shut up"
I do try to make my own content (as well as doing actual outreach and activism in the offline world). And the only games I've called out are ones that rake in millions of dollars and have large enough teams or enough money to bring more people on (I think I've only called out one actually). I support indie creators and boost their games when I am able to on this blog and my main.
Nice way to spend your time going after a minority (oppressed person? Idk) for pleading for representation in gaming. Get outta here.

A question to disabled users who enjoy gaming,
What kind of accessibility tools in games you need the most? What accessibility tools would you like to see (more) in video games?
What kind of disability representation issues/needs you have when it comes to video games?
I'm just curious about experiences of other disabled people who play games. This includes any kind of disability.

I posted this on my story in Insta but
I feel like the Switch has MAJOR accessibility issues.
It's basically impossible for me to play on handheld because stuff on the screen - and ESPECIALLY text - is way too small or faint for me to read.
It seems that on most Switch games you can't change the UI or expand the text, either.
That's why I had to drop games like Monster Hunter because even on a big screen that game's text is WAY too small and the bright colors on the TV gives me massive eyestrain. My partner had the same issue and ended up having to give their game to their nephew.
I'm struggling to play Fashion Dreamer too rn because of the same issue with the text (and no zoom-in options??? Are you kidding me? On a fashion game you're not gonna give us the option to look at the clothes and makeup closer up?)
EDIT: They gave us a zoom-in option (finally) in this game but ngl the handheld screen is still extremely small imo
And I also had this issue with Pokémon Legends Arceus.
It's a repeat issue with most games I play and I really feel like Nintendo and the companies that make these games should really do something about it.
Because I want to play these games! But I can't play the game if I can't read what it says!!

[cracks knuckles] Whelp. If I use game mechanics to represent ADHD in D&D, I guess I should do the same in magic. Time to make a self-milling deck. (Your library represents spells you know, and milling removed cards from your library, meaning you’re forgetting those spells)

I know you don't have to play a Crash Bandicoot game perfectly. I know. But... I see so many players trying to smash every crate, do every level perfectly... and my anxiety flares up. I can't just sit and enjoy the games, I have to do it right the FIRST TIME. And then I can't and then I'm like... the GAMES ARE HARD AND I SUCK. I'm scared of playing and losing and getting frustrated to the point I might break something.
I love video games, I love Crash, but the only Crash games that don't give me rage are Crash of the Titans, Crash Mind Over Mutant, Crash Team Racing, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled... and possibly Crash Team Rumble, but only because I haven't really touched that one.
A lot of it is having anxiety when it comes to playing video games. I love Crash and Cortex and all the other characters, but I am such an anxious wimp I can't get gud

I've seen various complaints about Baldur's Gate 3 online, and despite them, most people agree that it's a great game. A lot of the complaints and criticisms are also super valid!
But there's very little discussion from the community about the glaring lack of accessibility features. The fact that the max sized font is too small for many visual impairments, that the item descriptions are nearly impossible to read due to font size, colour, and font choice, or that there's no colourblindness settings to let colourblind people actually play the game. That's just issues with visual impairments too. I'm sure there's much more that others could speak about tp do with Deaf and HoH people, and othrr disabilities.
Larian really dropped the ball on that one, which is frustrating because it's 2023 but accessibility is still the last thing people think about.

In Mass Effect, they have the translators and if you notice, species that don't communicate verbally all have the same voice like the Hanar and Elcor.
What I really want in the next Mass Effect is to run into a deaf girl (like 6-12) who communicates with ASL, and her translated voice is Samuel L. Jackson. And he's the voice for all ASL translations.
Though we'd need to get the deaf communities' opinions on this. It would be amazing if they even had a deaf person write that character!!

My current home edit in the 1.6 update for Stardew Valley (desktop version, on an Apple Mac 🖥️ on GOG.com)
I’ve been so out of the gaming loop since late January I didn’t even know there was an update waiting for me until a few days ago! Stardew Valley has now officially taken over my life.
Since taking these screenshots I’ve now added an attic, the final room to decorate. Really loving all the new features, items and festivals. Just entered Autumn and enjoying the cosy vibes all over again.
Kinda spoilt me for the switch now since I’m using a Nintendo controller to play with anyway and enjoying all the mods out there. Been a lot of fun!

I'm seeing a lot of people posting about how they're glad Genshin has Finally made a 5 star disabled character and are finally representing the disabled community, and whilst yes, they have made another disabled character, it's not the first one, nor the first 5 star! But Baizhu has been long awaited for by many players, including myself!
Huge Reminder that Collei is disabled with chronic illness, and I'm pretty sure Layla has been discussed to have Narcolepsy. Also, many people totally forget Xiao is a disabled 5 star character with chronic pain inflicted by his karmic debt and mental health struggles partly relating to that, and rarely anyone talks about it! I know we are all excited, but, this is another problem.
Less "obvious" (even though if you have got chronic pain, it's the most obvious thing in your life) disabilities get forgotten about, in real life too, hence the ongoing promotion of invisible disabilities or less obvious but just as difficult to deal with ones, needing to be acknowledged.
He is NOT the first 5 star which was made playable!
Xiao was, but for Baizhu, they're more obvious about his health and his power ups that he is in the medical field and has disabilities, also woth the presence of glasses too which is another visible disability
As health a big part of his job and powers too, it's easier to notice, but that's another part of how the people within the community with less obvious physical disabilities get forgotten or missed.
Xiao was the first released disabled character that was 5 stars! A favourite of mine to play since he dropped as he resonates with me gender wise, and with that, I too have serious chronic pain! He has chronic pain induced by his karmic debt, and barely anyone talks about that because it's not been focused on as a part of his character as much as people have with Baizhu.
But yeah, with the drop of Collei as well who also has a chronic illness, and Layla suspected to potentially have narcolepsy and some NPCs in Sumeru having stories being told about their conditions has been great especially as games rarely make main characters that are disabled and as someone who is disabled with mobility aids and chronic pain, it is exciting as this has been my favourite game for 2 years plus now.
So far Xiao has been a saviour for me as well as Genshin as I've played it most days i cannot do absolutely anything and remain bed ridden from my disability and I've wanted Baizhu dropped since he was introduced as well and I'm glad they're making multiple characters with disabilities as it's very real truth MANY gamers have disabilities, and we deserve rep.

[Image id: Tumblr message from @manaphy-is-a-coward : "Hi! I saw your post about wanting more good representation for people in wheelchairs. I’m an aspiring game dev who would like the same thing. Currently, I’m making a dating sim and I definitely want to include a character in a wheelchair.
Do you have any tips? It can be for personality, relationships, stereotypes to avoid, anything!
Thank you in advance.
- Manaphy-Is-A-Coward, aspiring game developer
P.S.
I know you wanted playable characters in wheelchairs, and the ability to customise that fact, but for my first game I don’t think I’m going to add customisation. Sorry!"
My reply:
Hm so I would need to know what kind of game mechanics you're planning, like is it a visual novel or something more like stardew valley? Also having more characters in general in wheelchairs is still helpful, my concern is when games WITH customization leave out disabled players. I don't expect everyone to make their player character a wheelchair user (although I'd be nice if some did). Honestly, just treat them like you would any other npc. Don't make their whole personality about being in a wheelchair but don't completely ignore that fact. It's just a way for them to get around. It's okay if they make jokes about themselves (but maybe get feedback on them by a wc user before publishing). Another thing that pisses me off is when they introduce the wc user once and then you literally never see them again (barbie movie). Like they just want the points but not actual representation. Also is it ok if I screenshot this and post it so more wheelchair users can weigh in? I'd be good for you to get multiple opinions from both ambulatory and full time users
Okay, thank you!
And of course you can! I would love more opinions! End id]
