Also..
Will they have Geralt dealing with chronic pain now after the fight?
It looked like they will and I'd really love that!

Fantasy and Racism
Tumblr media
For those who have not heard about it yet: There is a very racist and queerphobic game mod for Baldur's Gate 3. A mod that basically removes all queerness from the game as well as modding all non-white characters white. All obviously under the excuse of "but that is realistic because medieval fantasy world". Which is bullshit. I talked about it before. But it is bullshit and we all know it.
It is one of the reasons I so rarely engage with a lot of high fantasy media. Because so much of it - especially of course the big franchises - kinda succumbs to this idea of a very white, very straight, very cis medieval period, in which disabled kids probably are also like killed by the time of their birth or get "fixed" with magic.
Of course there is diverse high fantasy out there. But definitely the "norm" for the genre is something else. Now, of course there are works that still work in themes about this (The Witcher most of all), but yeah... A lot of high fantasy media LOVES TO HIDE behind the "oh, but that would be wrong historically!" excuse.
And as someone who is a history nerd, I never stop to get super angry about this. The middle ages were actually fucking queer and there were a lot of people who lived openly queer. We know about medieval trans folks, too - and given the fact that we know about less than 1% who lived during those 1000 years - there were a ton more.
We also know that there were people from Africa, the Arab world and Asia living in medieval Europe. Some of them have come there with the Romans, others have come there for research and trade. (The first European person in Japan, was a Roman, by the way.)
Meanwhile most of fantasy is very unrealistic when it comes to things like how society works or how HISTORY ITSELF works. Like, so much of medieval Europe was directly influenced by how Roman society, Christianity and the indigenous cultures of Europe interacted. But guess what? Most fantasy worlds do not have something like Rome in their background, do not have an institution like the Catholic Church, and also do not have any indigenouity. Your average fantasy world was born with folks having medieval technology and over the next 2000 years are very unlikely to develop past medieval technology. Which is very, very unrealistic. But guess what the folks who whine about gays in their medieval fantasy do not complain about?
And that is of course without going into the most obvious stuff: There were no elves in medieval Europe. There were no dwarves, no halflings, no gnomes, no orcs, no goblins, no dragons, no magic, no... Do I need to go on? And there was also not a big group of people running around raiding some old graves and ruins (which were also trapped with all sorts of magic and what not). And indeed there were no gods that threatened to END THE FUCKING WORLD at least once per decade.
Heck, speaking about Baldur's Gate 3 itself, I am more frustrated that there are not more non-white persons around. Like, the only east Asian character I have interacted with was Cazador as far as I remember, and that... is not really great representation, you know? Like, I would have liked to have another non-white companion at least.
Especially as... Well, Faerûn/Toril is not the real world. So, for fuck's sake. The folks within that world can crossover as much as the IP holders want them to.
I mean, fuck. You know what exists within Faerûn? CHOCOLATE! Something that not only was not available in medieval Europe because the beans grew in the Americas, but something that in the form we associate with it was not invented until the 19th century!
Just, yeah. Fuck people who complain about "historical accuracy", because something is diverse and includes rep. Just fuck them.

Can I introduce y’all to literally one of my favorite fics in the world that just keeps growing and adding beauty to my life?
Featuring a large and growing cast of secondary characters (my favorite thing; I love ensemble), Geralt x Jaskier, accidental warlord Geralt, tribute Jaskier, lots of learning and misunderstandings, Lambert (whos one of my faves), and tons of queer (ace, trans, gay, lesbian, bi, etc.) rep, disabled rep, BIPOC rep, and so much more? I love this fic series so much
Here’s the first one in the series:

works in progress
Tumblr media
I decided to put up all my wips for writing. I have quite a few, but only some that are very serious and I am focusing on right now. This gets kind of long and rambling so take care to read the bold text, that's where you can find the most important bits.
The Witch in the Ruins
STATUS: Third Draft is 100% complete in the story, however it's being beta read now and will likely have a final revision or two.
GENRE/S: Dark Fantasy
MICRO SYNOPSIS: A nomadic mersinos new to town is hired to kill a ruthless witch terrorizing the town of Atavis.
This is a Sapphic dark fantasy story featuring some horror elements, action, gore and violence. It also has sexual content, though minor and is heavily inspired by things like Dark Souls and The Witcher.
A Night at the Brass Sword (Book 1 of Creatures of the Night)
STATUS: Not complete, I am about 70% through the first draft.
GENRE/S: Paranormal/Supernatural Fantasy
MICRO SYNOPSIS: Kaz, his sister Ziva, and her girlfriend Kat head out for a winter break road-trip to Pike, Massachusetts. When Kat convinces them to stay at the old family resort, they find that the rumors about The Brass Sword being a hotbed for paranormal activity aren't rumors at all.
This one features several queer characters, bipoc and disability rep and is filled with both horror elements and comedy. It will also have a subplot for two romantic relationships. Found family dynamics abound and platonic friendships too. Oh, and these hills and definitely haunted so expect spooky elements and terrifying scenes with ghosts/possession etc. Also this is NOT A SERIES, or rather it's a companion series. I have the first four kind of figured out, generally, and none of them have recurring characters between them.
The Wilds Ones: Bloodlines (Book 1)
STATUS: Draft number 84657 (seriously I don't know, but I have been writing this for like 7 years), this is practically finished, however it needs some serious fucking revision. It is not suitable for beta eyes yet.
GENRE/S: Urban fantasy
THE ACTUAL SYNOPSIS: Ariane and Eron Ward are shapeshifters who work for an age-old Order of Hunters sworn to protect innocents from the supernatural. They work in a modern day New York earning a paycheck to be the most efficient killers they can be, and keep their family’s legacy going, until what they thought was a simple job ends up nearly killing them both. A demon of all things saves their hides and offers them a deal. In exchange for protection against his greatest foe, he will help them find Eron’s father; a man they thought long dead. In their desperate struggle to save him, they collect a pack of wayward allies and get caught up in a war against a coven of blood mages.
This one will have loads of queer characters, the MC is asexual/homoromantic with sex repulsion but does like to date. There is a lot of tragedy, some mystery, loads of action, it's urban fantasy but there is not "Secret World" aspect, so the humans know about the supernatural, also the demons are not based on any religion specifically so they don't come from the devil or anything like that. There is some religious aspects, but I personally am not religious so I don't have an emphasis on that. There are a lot of bipoc characters, and I also have some disability and neurodivergent rep. Also lots of mental illness/health rep and metaphors, specifically most of the supernatural creatures represent a mental illness or feeling I have had. (I am mentally ill myself and this series is therapeutic for me) Found family everywhere! Morally grey characters too, literally everybody in this series.
The Shroud (Book 1 of the Edge Series)
STATUS: In progress. I have a lot planned and figured out, but I only have a few chapters done and I have not looked at it in a year or two. Low-priority.
GENRE/S: Science Fiction
Tilurus is the fifth world humanity has claimed in their quest for colonization. Though it’s been anything but smooth. In the last thirty years a recurring, and seemingly random set of environmental hazards have ravaged the planet. These occurrences, most notably the multi-cyclone tornadoes, have been named: The Shroud.
Meanwhile, in the city of Rival, a bounty hunter and his partner are asked to search for the son of a legendary soldier. General Heller’s son is missing, and soon after they start their hunt, Logan Wilder and Darren Gunn quickly realize the ex-Militia soldier they are after has a target on his back, hitched to him by a gang of cannibals.
I don't want to spoil too much since it's still so vague but I will chat more about it later.
Godslayer (not sure if it will be standalone or not)
STATUS: Not even an outline yet, this one will be very complex so I plan on taking my time. This is low-priority.
GENRE/S: Science Fiction Fantasy (SFF)
MICRO SYNOPSIS: Not sure yet still, but let's just say it has godlike creatures in space with dragons and an MC who is half-dragon and hundreds of years old.

also obligatory “if i had a nickel for each time the witcher netflix killed off an unimportant Deaf Black elf, i’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it’s happened twice” post bc uh. idk just a really strange thing to write happening again even after the audience’s criticism from the first time they did it!
(the main show’s + blood origin has such bad disability rep….. i do not understand why all the disabled characters die or have their disabilities “fixed”. i would be incredibly surprised if they even remember to have geralt struggling with chronic pain, despite that being a fairly important thing in the books)

Yes, I eventually want to cosplay almost of the Witcher women but almost tempted to take Yen off the list because of the comparisons that would invite. As a disabled person I don’t think I get to choose to ignore that side of her and the problematic aspects that go along with it :/

You know, I've wondered why they made the choice to have Coen's pox scars only on one side of his face, and why they gave him heterochromia. I'm not against it, we know very little about Coen other than that his eyes were red/poorly mutated, and he's honorable enough to fight at the battle of Brenna. Oh, and that he wasn't a wolf witcher. I digress. But then I saw this really interesting snippet on a post
Tumblr media
... Well that's intriguing. So Yasen likely has scar tissue on that eye. Why didn't they just give us a slight nod to this? Geralt's canonical disability being ignored ... well, we've been told it'll be included later. That they're thinking about it. But right here you have a man playing a witcher with a disability. And you haven't even bothered to let us know. This is fantastic. This is lovely. Yes, please, absolutely. I am 100000% down with Coen with canonical partial blindness. His eyes are brown, but they did not give him the blue contact in that left eye, likely because of scar tissue. And they also did not give him the toxicity eye (or CGI it) in the left eye. *waves* Come on, Netflix. Plenty of fans have vision impairment who would've been pleased at having rep. You gave us a Deaf Elf (which was excellent btw). Why not this?

thinking about Yennefer from the Witcher show and how she is my favorite #bad disability rep. I have never felt more represented, watching her get her insta-cure and then not knowing how to deal with suddenly not being disabled/disfigured anymore. Like, how do you make eye contact with people when you grew up with people literally telling you to your face that it creeps them out when you look at them. You don't... you flounder. the memory and habits from that discrimination don't go away and you can't suddenly become someone who hasn't modified their behaviors due to ableism and you certainly don't suddenly learn the social skills of someone who looked like you do now all of their life. but you're expected to, because well, you're not disabled! why should anyone assume you ever were? people with a long-term disability (in my case, degenerative!) are always disabled for life, right?

Hi, i really hope you don't mind me asking, would it be possible for you to explain the racism and ableism in the witcher please? If not then don't worry, i will make sure i am more aware if i watch it again
hello, yes
among the many things that bother me is the glorification of being "fixed" if you're disabled. this idea that you can be all powerful but being disabled is always going to be something that makes you ugly, and therefore, weak, DID NOT sit well w me
the way that POC are either a) a persecuted race b) solely there to benefit and champion our white protagonists c) evil masterminds, is just ??? it really bothers me that white creators subconsciously villify disabled, fat, POC folx and then absolve themselves of responsibility by claiming it wasn't deliberate
i think in 2020??? poor rep just doesn't do. it's just a bland, weird piece of media imo and i couldn't be bothered to sit down and dissect it for its flaws

Marvel Delivers USPS
The postal service is under attack by Republicans and the Trump Administration. Despite the vital role the USPS serves for seniors, folks with disabilities, veterans, and low-income individuals (among many others), Republicans are attempting to dismantle this service to sabotage mail-in voting and increase profits for private delivery companies. We have to fight back!
The Marvel Delivers USPS event is intended to raise awareness about the importance of the Postal Service and encourage advocacy.
Here’s how it works:
Take a step to support USPS (listed below)
Send proof to [email protected]
Fill out this form to send in a prompt for a fandom and pairing.
One of the writers or artists picks up and writes or creates with a cap of 30 minutes per art/writing which is a maximum of 600/750 words and posts it on Tumblr, AO3, or Twitter. Current fandoms are Marvel, Twilight, SPN, LOTR, The Good Place, and The Witcher.
Enjoy!
Ways to support USPS:
Contact your local representatives.
You can find the address, e-mail or phone number for your elected officials here: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative  and https://www.senate.gov/senators/How_to_correspond_senators.htm
Or: Text "USPS" to 50409, and a letter will be sent to your local reps urging them to support Rep. Maloney's Delivering for America Act, which "prohibits the Postal Service from implementing any changes to the operations or level of service it had in place on January 1, 2020, until the COVID-19 pandemic has ended."
Sign a petition. For folks outside the US, petitions are a good way to show your support for the cause. Here are a few:
Sign the Center for American Progress petition.
Sign the Change.org petition.
Sign the Common Cause petition to "Save the U.S. Postal Service"
Sign the MoveOn petition to "Fully Fund the United States Postal Service"
Buy stamps and other USPS merchandise.
Send a letter via USPS to a family member or a senior in an assisted living pen-pal program.
This is a pretty laid back event, so we hope you’ll have fun and be goofy with us. Please let us know if you have any questions.

i think a lot of the witcher netflix fandom came to it after game of thrones, therefore the bar is on the ground. they see yennefer and think its peak rep even tho theres weird scenes like before she "becomes beautiful." I think you could also blame the choreography that went into the fight scenes (like in the first ep) bc fans interpreted it as cool
of course though it’s the hardcore netflix fans who misinterpret the series and refuse to acknowledge that the netflix adaptation is inaccurate to the books and that they might not understand the core themes and messages...
god i have really been thinking about that bullshit they pulled with yennefer for like a week now and i’ve wanted to make a longer post but it really just horrifies me how they objectified a woc’s body, showed being disabled in a pififul light, and literally defined “beautiful as “not disabled” and people fawn over just how progressive and empowering it is to women... like can you believe this shit? obviously some of this comes from the canon books (not all of it though, some of the worst parts inexplicably came from netflix) but no one is lauding sapkowski up as an iconic feminist.
and i agree i was just going to follow up that rant post i made with something about geralt, the caste of witchers, and all of the ‘monsters’ he encounters in the series, but i feel like so many fans, honestly especially tw3 fans, see geralt and go “COOL MONSTER HUNTER” when literally one of the points of the series is that monsters aren’t evil and geralt doesn’t want to kill innocents and he meets like so many “monsters” over the course of the series that he then just befriends... but omg a sword looks cool so of course you have to kill with it! ... it makes me kind of pissed off ngl because fans will gush over (ahem) regis but then talk about how all of the killing monsters is so cool and im like -_- ok hypocrite ... ok like obviously you can think it’s cool (cdpr did awesome jobs with the visuals) but it’s really annoying to see how much of the violence and gore are the main draws for people like... so what did you think about the moral messages... lel...
oh but i do hate the fight choreography in the netflix adaptation lmao. i know a lot of people thought it was badass but sincerely it demonstrates to me how cavill’s beefiness severely limited them in actually having him fight like geralt fights. also a lot of it is cheesy, i mean, aard kiss? come on...
