At what age does it become intolerable to participate in online fandom?
At what age do you start telling people they're too old to be in a public fandom space because it skews young?
I have been online since the literal beginning of the internet. I've been in chatrooms in one form or another for my entire life, without issue, without anyone telling me I don't belong there. It has been my primary mode of socialization since I was 14. Some of the most important people in my life are people I met online.
But then I turned 40 and suddenly, my presence in a chatroom is creepy.
It wasn't creepy when I was 35 and I was the admin for a huge Discord server full of mostly teens and 20-somethings. Nobody complained when I was 35. They called me their server mom.
But 40 is apparently the limit. I tried to join a few public Discord servers last year and was politely shooed away each time because I was honest about my age.
The obvious solution would be to find spaces with people my own age, right? Except those don't really exist. If it's a fandom space, the overwhelming majority of people are going to be teens, 20-somethings, and a small population of younger 30-somethings. Those are the people who are talking about the things I also would like to talk about.
Even the people I follow here on Tumblr are mostly in their 20s.
There is not much of an online peer group for older Millennials and Gen X. I found and tried some non-fandom, general servers, and they were desolate and stale. A lot of us grew up without computers at home, barely even had computers at school, so the internet never really became a big part of our lives beyond things like Facebook, or Twitter, or discussion boards. Things you spend a few minutes looking over before bed.
But I don't want those things. Tumblr has been great, the Good Omens fandom has been amazing, but I don't want to check throughout the day if someone has replied to something I said hours or days or weeks ago, I want to talk to people, but those places are populated by an age group who tells me it's not appropriate for me to be there anymore.
It's so damn frustrating and lonely. I didn't do anything wrong. I'm not doing anything wrong. I just got older.
I'm just a married gay woman with a kid in school who wants to giggle over an angel and a demon and how in love and stupid they are. I feel like it shouldn't be this hard.

By the way if you're creating a space like a private group chat or a Discord server it is absolutely your responsibility to make sure that space is safe.
It is your responsibility to moderate it. To regulate the behavior displayed within it. To take action when people create harm. You cannot just create this space then wash your hands of any responsibility for what happens within it.
I keep seeing so many teens making servers and chats and groups and then whining that they're getting bullied for not doing anything when people use them to cause harm and upset and I cannot stress this enough.
You are responsible for shutting that down. Or for sourcing someone to do it on your behalf. You have control of that space. You are not just an innocent bystander.
"Anything goes here, if you're offended just leave" is absolutely not an excuse for blatantly allowing things like harassment, bullying, racism, homophobia and other targeted hate.
Discord in particular is incredible for available resources for preventing things like this. There are literally hundreds of server bots you can deploy to auto-moderate and manual moderation is as easy as two little clicks.
If you feel you're responsible enough to be in the position of power of creating a space, you are responsible enough to ensure it is not used for harm.
And if you're not?
Well.

Traits that make people terrible moderators
These are just some observations I've made being a moderator in multiple settings, in wonderful teams and bad teams, as well as being in communities that have absolutely festered due to poor moderation. Many of these traits are things you can identify before the person is even appointed a moderator in the first place. (Most of this applies to large-scale servers and/or communities, and isn't always applicable to small and/or personal servers. I am not writing some sort rule book absolutely everyone has to follow, these are just traits that would not make the mod-team cut, to me, you don't have to agree with me.)
Having any hesitation with confrontation. (being a moderator requires confrontation, this is not negotiable. if the idea of confronting difficult people gives you anxiety or panic attacks, don't apply to be a moderator)
Being too eager to confront and/or unable to use tact/kindness when confronting. (those that seek confrontation should not be moderators)
Gets personally offended easily. (any mod that is constantly getting into fights with other users because of perceived slights, will make the whole community feel unable to talk to the mod team)
Is incapable of repairative reading. (moderators need to be capable of reading the best out of someone and not jumping to negative conclusions)
Lacking in compassion. (using tact and kindness leads to faster, more permanent, diffusion of conflicts)
Views any confrontation as a personal attack. (being a moderator means getting a lot of questions, suggestions, and well-meaning 'confrontation' and needs to be met without hostility. ps: tact and firmness are not the same as hostility)
Cares more about their own wants than the server. This can manifest in the form of, in the case of a server/community created for a single individual, ignoring comforts/needs of the individual; in the case of a collective community, being unwilling to negotiate or compromise with the rest or the community/team. Just any abuse of power in general.
Likes to control others. (moderation is about cohesive harmony for a shared goal, not control)
Incapable of being objective and applying the same rules appropriately to all users. (those that expect exceptions for their friends or people they want to impress, or express any other bias of application of the rules, should not be moderators)
Incapable of following the rules, themselves. (if someone wasn't following the rules before they became a mod, it won't change when they do become a mod)
Wants to be a mod for the social collateral, not because they want the community to run smoothly. (those that are constantly vying for attention and validation, that then apply for being a mod, should not be made mods)
Lacks humility. (knowing when to admit you're wrong or have overstepped, is important to being a good moderator)
Lacks the self-awareness of knowing when to put something down and walk away. (as a moderator, self-moderation is a vital skill that must be learned to be able to moderate others)
Refuses to communicate directly and clearly in any given circumstance. (vague communication is bad moderation, any user being approached by a mod should know exactly what they did wrong, and what is expected for future change)
Is prone to soap-boxing/lecturing instead of being concise. (this goes back to communicating clearly and directly; being overly verbose and preachy can make it difficult to understand. You need to give room to allow the member you are confronting to talk and ask questions.)
Incapable of deferring to others with grace where appropriate. (knowing when you're not the best mod for the job, when you're lacking in information, when your ideas just won't work, or when you're compromised is important. and knowing how to properly delicate tasks is a Must for an admin)

hi guys !! i figured i should probably make a more formal post for this (and not just my cat reaction picture, even if it's adorable) but yesterday I made a discord server !! It's definitely not professional or anything like that, and it's (super) small at the moment but its a lot of fun lol. You obviously don't have to be a simmer to join tho, it's open to everyone 💗
i've really wanted to get to know a lot of you guys better and tumblr is lowkey not it for all that, so this is just a place for us to hang out and talk about random stuff lols
kavi's moon in my language translates to poet's moon which is why it's also a place to share ocs pretty much everywhere. again it's seriously not formal we're just having fun aksdjs
come join 🌙 !!

JOIN GOTHAM CITY'S SEWERS
Jump down the manhole and come meet the rest of us. Gotham City's Sewers is an active DC centric server created by queers for queers. It is a 16+ space - But the server has an adult majority.
FEATURES:
Several fun bots to keep everyone entertained;
PluralKit and Tupperbox support;
A designated channel for roleplay searches/requests;
Reaction roles, so you don't have to wait for admins;
Art channels, including a channel for AUs;
Channels dedicated to media outside of DC, so that you can ramble about whatever your heart desires;
Party events;
If we hit 50 members, we will start holding art contests.
Extra info under the cut!
└This server is 16+, but has an adult majority. Minors are not allowed on the vent channel, the gen-blacklist channel or the NSFW channels (of course). There is also a general SFW chat for adults only.
└The server is still in its infancy; suggestions are appreciated.
└Access to Mudae is optional.
└All DC Comics media is allowed. The server is Gotham City themed as it's my main fixation, but anything DC is cherished.
└Do not bring fandom discourse into the server. That being said, incest and pedophilic ships are not welcome.

hi there, i'm trying to get into the coding community so to speak. what sites can i join to discuss/do coding related stuff? I know about stack overflow, github and leetcode but i'm sure there are more, do you have any advice on which spaces are worth joining? thanks!
Communities To Join For Coding/Programming
Tumblr media
Yeah I can help! In terms of "which spaces are worth joining" would depend on you. What I see as a place worth joining is a place where I can teach others - I like giving knowledge back on what I learnt so some places that I listed don't work well for me to do that and some others I prefer the most like the discord servers I'll mention. So, you'll have to skim through these and see if they're something you like!
Anyhoo, here are some places I found:
Reddit: There are many subreddits dedicated to coding, such as r/learnprogramming, r/coding, and r/programming. You can also find subreddits dedicated to specific programming languages or technologies so you can get specific help or provide the help to those languages etc.
Codecademy Forum: They have a forum and a discord server where you can talk about the courses and get buddies to do projects together who are at the same level as you!
FreeCodeCamp Forum: This website offers free coding lessons and projects, and also has a community forum where you can ask for help and connect with other learners. I met 2 developers from there who helped me a lot.
Dev.to and Medium: Both a community where developers come to share their knowledge and experiences through blog posts and discussions. Developers sometimes gain good writing experience by writing these posts (great way to move towards being a technical writer). I've made a Dev.to account and I'm slowly adding my programming posts from here to there and I want to start using Medium too 🤔
Discord: There are many Discord servers dedicated to coding, where you can join discussions and get help with coding problems. I made a whole post with a list of discord servers I'm part of and would recommend it if you want to get into it! I made lots of developer friends from the discord servers. Intimidating at first but slowing you'll like it I think! I'm mostly there to help people with HTML and CSS problems and you can help people the same with whatever. you're strong in!
In the end, the websites and communities you choose to join will depend on your interests and goals. I recommend exploring a few different options and finding the ones that work best for you - I did that and I preferred the discord servers over the subreddits 😅
Good luck with your coding journey! 😸👍🏾💗

I 100% believe that each guild in Skyrim would have their own discord server.
The College of Winterhold one would have different chats for the different schools
The dark brotherhood would have one that’s “kill ranking” where you post your assassination and the others rate it and they have a night mother bot
The Thieves Guild posts jobs
The Companions has each of the Circle members as Mods
The Bard College is a regular discord server full of sleep deprived gay people with one or more mental disorders

The Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex is open to new members!! For one week, as of Jan. 11th (13:27) CDT, this link will be valid to use!
We are a small server centered around FNAF (mostly Security Beach) and content featuring FNAF characters. We do movie nights and have VCs for gaming, chilling, and streaming! Right now, a group of us play Project Playtime nightly, myself included. The only real distinction between our server and others like it is that we're not centered around shipping or x reader content!
We also have suggestion channels where you can recommend changes and additions to the server, such as new channels for different topics of discussion, or emojis you want added to the server! If we get enough boosts to reach level 2, we can also have an art contest to decide what the banner for the server will be! We hope to see you there!

That discord server post made me remember the stark difference between Serverstuck (a minor populated server) and Degrees of Lewdity (strict adult-only server)
Serverstuck has the worst mods and owner I've seen because they're all Antis and abuse the rules by excusing anyone who are close to them & punishing others who are strangers, lying to people on why some got banned, and allowed sensitive political topic go unregulated
Degrees of Lewdity, despite filled with people who has crude & cursed-level sense of humor, has strict mods & owner, write the correct information on why some people are banned or muted (they even allow users to request to be ban from the server for mental health reasons), and immediately shut down any conversation of sensitive political topics that cause infighting between members
I feel safer in a server for an adult game development than a "minor friendly" homestuck rp server
While I do welcome servers that have a mixed age range, I don't think I've ever or will ever join a server moderated or owned by someone who is either/both an anti or a minor.
To run or moderate a server you need to be impartial, objective, socially aware, able to appropriately manage conflict and relatively socially seasoned. I've personally found most minors often lack or are incapable of most if not all of these qualities.
(And that's not me hating on minors or calling them ignorant. Some of those qualities are just things you learn or develop with age and time. Some adults never learn them at all, even, but they are qualities you need if you're going to, essentially, be in charge of other people.)
Sephiroth's Server Safety Tips
Always do a thorough check into who is advertising the server, who owns the server, and other members before joining a server where possible.
Once you've joined the server, immediately use the search function to look for key words related to topics you want to avoid, possible past conflict, bullying, ect.
Immediately check the server rules. Its a red flag in itself if the server doesn't have any. Also, 'just be nice' is not a rule. Servers should have clear, clean cut rules and regulations.
Don't be afraid to message server owners, moderators or users privately and ask questions. They shouldn't get offended and if they can't or won't answer questions about basic rules, server safety protocols, ect, you should reconsider joining.
Don't be afraid to ask around other people to see if the server is known or has a reputation, either. If a server is based on a specific fandom, for example, search through that fandom for any past mentions of the server or ask other fans if they've heard of it.

SO SORRY I KEEP USING THIS ACCOUNT TO ADVERTISE MY DISCORD SERVERS BUT
I made a Captain Laserhawk fan server. We're a community who hopes to grow. Despite it being Captain Laserhawk themed, anyone is allowed. We have art channels, writing channels, discussion channels, etc. We will also host game nights, show nights, VC nights, etc if this server grows enough. We also have serious channels, and certain discussion channels made for certain people.
We are an accepting group and a safe space for
-Autistic and neurodivergent people -People under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella -People of any Gender identity -People who use any pronouns (INCLUDING XENOS AND NEOS!) -Systems, etc (NOT ENDOGENIC SYSTEMS!) -People of all races, cultures and religions -Everyone regardless of whether you are able-bodied or not -Etc!
(WE ARE NOT A SAFE SPACE FOR PROSHIPPERS, COMSHIPPERS, DARKSHIPPERS, ETC. IF YOU ARE A PROSHIPPER DO NOT JOIN THIS SERVER.)
Please consider giving this server a join. Thank you everyone!

Trying to gauge interest in a Discord server primarily focused on writing Steam Powered Giraffe fanfic and making fanart?
I know there's the official server, and I'm in that, but I'd like something more focused on creating and also where I don't feel anxious because the actual band members might see what I make lol
I'd make and maintain the server if there's at least five people interested.
