Georgia O’Keeffe è tra le due pittrici più quotate al mondo. Icona dell’arte moderna statunitense, è la più influente artista di paesaggi e scenari naturali del XX secolo. 

È stata la prima donna a cui è stata dedicata una retrospettiva al Museum of Modern Art di New York, nel 1946.

È passata alla storia per le sue grandiose rappresentazioni della natura. Fiori visti da molto vicino, riprodotti con una minuziosa attenzione ai dettagli e che le hanno consentito di sviluppare un linguaggio espressivo originale che oscilla tra astrazione e figurazione.

All’inizio della sua carriera, aveva fatto parte della corrente del precisionismo, movimento artistico statunitense nato dopo la prima guerra mondiale, conosciuto anche come realismo cubista, le cui tematiche toccavano i temi dell’industrializzazione e la modernizzazione, rappresentati con forme geometriche precise e finemente definite. Anche se le sue opere più importanti e conosciute se ne sono discostate notevolmente.

Nata in una fattoria vicino a Sun Prairie, nel Wisconsin, il 15 novembre 1887, era la seconda dei sette figli e figlie degli allevatori di bestiame  Francis Calyxtus O’Keeffe, di origine irlandese e Ida Totto, di origine ungherese.

Sin da ragazzina, aveva dimostrato una grande propensione all’arte che la spinse a iscriversi alla Scuola d’Arte di Chicago.

Dopo aver insegnato arte per qualche anno, si era trasferita a New York, dove si era formata alla Arts Students League, vincendo borse di studio e diversi premi.

Nella metropoli, si era ritrovata al centro dell’influente cerchia che ruotava intorno al fotografo, gallerista e mediatore artistico Alfred Stieglitz, tra i primi a esporre le opere delle avanguardie europee e il primo che le ha consentito di esporre le sue opere, riconoscendone l’enorme  potenziale artistico.

Le sue creazioni di quegli anni sono caratterizzate da un astrattismo lirico creato da armoniose linee, figure e colori. Le sue serie di illustrazioni a carboncino e acquerelli, sono considerate fra le più innovative di tutta l’arte statunitense del periodo.

Il sodalizio artistico tra l’artista e il gallerista, mutò in un legame sentimentale che ha portato al matrimonio, nel 1924.

Dagli anni venti, aveva abbandonato l’acquerello per realizzare pitture a olio di grande formato con forme naturali e architettoniche rappresentanti vedute della città di New York.

Ma la città non l’affascinava, attratta dagli spazi aperti in cui era nata, dal 1929, aveva iniziato a passare molto tempo nel New Mexico, dove ha dipinto alcune delle sue creazioni più famose in cui sintetizzava fiori e paesaggi tipici, per lo più colline desertiche disseminate di rocce, conchiglie e ossa. I contorni sono increspati, con sottili transizioni tonali di colori che variano fino a trasformare il soggetto in immagini astratte che, talvolta richiamano alla mente l’organo sessuale femminile.

Tra le sue opere più famose ci sono Papaveri orientali del 1927, Colline rosse con fiore del 1937 e, soprattutto, White Flower No 1 del 1932. La tela, dopo esser stata nella sala da pranzo dell’ex presidente George W. Bush alla Casa Bianca, è stata venduta da Sotheby’s nel 2014, per 44,4 milioni di dollari, l’opera d’arte realizzata da una donna più costosa, fino a quel momento.

Nel 1943 l’Art Institute di Chicago ha ospitato la sua prima retrospettiva in un museo.

Quando, nel 1946 perse il marito, decise di trasferirsi definitivamente nel New Mexico, dove ha prodotto una serie di pitture con forme architettoniche e una vasta serie di dipinti di nuvole come viste dai finestrini di un aeroplano.

Agli inizi degli anni settanta è stata colpita da una malattia alla vista, che l’ha costretta a ridurre il lavoro. Ha comunque continuato a lavorare a matita e acquerello, per poi passare alla creta, fino all’ultimo istante della sua vita.

Il 10 gennaio 1977 venne insignita della maggiore onorificenza statunitense, la Medaglia presidenziale della libertà, dal Presidente Gerald Ford.

È morta a Santa Fe il 6 marzo 1986, aveva 98 anni.

Vent’anni dopo, sono state pubblicate le oltre 25000 lettere che si era scambiata col marito nel periodo del suo auto-esilio in New Mexico. Lui le scriveva anche tre lettere al giorno, alcune lunghe più di quaranta pagine, sperando di convincerla a tornare definitivamente da lui.

La maggior parte delle sue opere sono conservate in oltre 100 collezioni pubbliche e private negli Stati Uniti.

In Europa, la prima mostra importante si è svolta dopo la sia morte, nel 1993, alla Hayward Gallery di Londra.

Georgia O’Keeffe è considerata tra le più importanti artiste del ventesimo secolo.

È stata una donna libera e visionaria, che amava superare i limiti e esplorare territori differenti, prediligeva abiti maschili e ha vissuto relazioni omosessuali con diverse donne, tra cui Frida Kahlo e Rebecca Strand. Considerata ultra liberale e segnalata dall’FBI per le sue idee e comportamenti, ha più volte sottolineato che l’arte non ha genere, rifiutando di veder relegata la sua opera in una categoria a parte, come pittura femminile.

Mentre critici d’arte, psicologi e intellettuali si sforzavano di spiegare cosa si celasse dietro quei fiori che l’hanno resa tanto famosa, spiazzò tutti spiegando che aveva scelto di ritrarli solo perché “sono meno costosi dei modelli e stanno fermi”.

yeah idk i'm bored and in an eah/mh mood. deal with it (ily)

i prefer eah to mh. i'm sorry, i grew up with eah, and though Now i can really appreciate mh, i will always like eah more. tbh i think the story is a bit deeper and honestly better oops

i don't like toralei all that much. this one i'm scared about bc i know everybody Loves Her, but i just. idk. i don't Dislike her or anything i've just never liked her nearly as much as the other characters. and i don't love her design very much, it just doesn't appeal to my personal aesthetic taste. she feels like a meaner, less aesthetically pleasing version of kitty cheshire to me (yes i know toralei came first but still)

now i do dislike frankie. i think she's super boring i'm sorry i don't hate her or anything but. idk she annoys me. i like her design tho

i like cupid's character in eah. maybe it's just because i grew up with ever after high and i'm biased but i don't think she's terrible in eah. i get the argument that they kinda reduced her character to a dexter simp and that she's more passive and yada yada but... number one she was in a whole different and entirely new world. it makes sense for her to be more passive and shy and stuff because she's in this new world that's totally different and that has a Lot more rules than the monster high universe. and also the fact that her personality kinda becomes dexter is kinda... realistic? like it's not Healthy don't get me wrong but like. a lot of people will become really obsessed with somebody they're attracted to and it can be normal for a lot of people to turn their crush into their personality. i think had the show gone on we would've seen cupid branch out more and get over dexter and become the cupid we knew and loved in monster high- we just didn't get enough time with her in the land of ever after. also i like her design in eah i like her mh design more but i think the ever after one is really cute!! also i think her personality's kind of adorable in ever after high.

i think some of the mh reboot dolls look really cool. like don't get me wrong the swimsuit ones and the family ones and a lot of the others are So Bad but a lot of them i really like!! i can't think of any examples and don't have to energy to look them up but i went through all of the monster high dolls with my bsf the other day and i remember liking a good amount of the reboots.

apple x raven makes me so uncomfy. my mom pointed out to me that raven's dad being the good king implies that her father is snow white's dad and that just makes me feel very icky about rapple. bc that means they are related. blood related. that means raven is snow white's half sister. and therefore apple's aunt. discosting.

i don't like darabella. i think it's boring ok there's no spice no flavor i don't like it!! i Get that she makes him a better person i Get it it makes Sense but No. i like daring x lizzie aha. i think the reason i prefer dizzie is because #1: spice and #2: with darabella rosabella makes daring a better person but he does absolutely nothing for her. like he does nothing to break her out of her shell or make her think of herself more or smth like that it's completely one-sided. with dizzie (and cerise x daring, which i also like but not as much as dizzie) you see daring sacrifice himself for lizzie's sake and you see lizzie soften around him. it's mutually beneficial and very, very cute. i love them.
