Hello! Hope the days are good! If Dragonis is here, may I ask for thoughts on The Endurance?
SHACKLETON!
They turned a steam yacht into an exploration vessel! Of fucking *course* it wasn't going to manage that well.
I am a big fan of the fact that the wreck isn't going to salvaged and is instead going to be 3D scanned.
Also, I think it's hilarious that they keep naming icebreakers after it.

Summary: Garmadon and Co. move into the monastery.
Warnings: Wu is in denial
Prompt: New Beginnings
Extra: Set in pre-canon. "And Co." are Ray, Maya, Libber, and Lily. Wu is in denial of being a father, but Ray and Garmadon will not shut up about it. I am sleepy so this probably sounds a bit dead.
"So this is what you've been doing in my absence?" Garmadon asked after he knocked on a giant red door of the Monastery.
He had walked in on Wu as he guided Morro through proper katana form.
The brother's locked eyes.
"Morro, you've done a great job today, but I think we're done for now. Do you mind cleaning up everything?" the blonde asked kindly.
Morro simply bowed and dragged the training dummy and bokken to their respective storage places, disappearing into the monastery afterwards.
Garmadon approached his younger brother. The two stood face to face, tension thickening the air as silence flowed between the two.
"Is this the boy you've been writing about?" the elder brother asked.
"Yes, that was Morro." The younger brother confirmed. "Where are the other four?"
"They are… coming." The brunette turned to the stairs, where spiky brown hair popped up from a distance. "It has been a long journey."
"I see. Good thing Morro and I prepared rooms for you all ahead of time." Wu stepped forwards to be next to the taller man.
The two stood in weighted silence.
The eldest sighed, "I missed you, Brother."
"As did I." The younger quickly brushed off any dirt accumulated from training.
Ray clambered up the stairs, huffing with each step he took. Maya, Libber, and Lily followed up behind. All of them at different levels of exhaustion, ranging from Libber, who was bent over with her hands on her knees gasping for air as fat beads of sweat dripped down her round pale cheeks and thin neck, to Lily, who was slightly winded as she dabbed sweat off her brow and jogged up and down the same three steps, giving encouraging words to the other women with her.
"Why," Ray asked through labored breaths, "do you live on top of a mountain?"
The blonde man smiled, "There's a nice view."
"Eughhh… I need… a bath," Libber groaned as she collapsed against the wall of the monastery, scooching over to a shaded area.
"Same, I forgot how tall this mountain was," Maya agreed.
"Oh come on, it wasn't that bad," Lily received two deadpan stares.
"Maybe for you because you love rock climbing," Libber grumbled before slouching inside to bathe. Maya and Lily followed suit.
Ray straightened up eventually. "So, where's your kid, Wu?"
"What?"
"Your kid. Y'know, agh what was the name, Mollo? No, Mono? Ah, Morro!"
"Wha- hah! Morro is not my kid."
"You sure, Brother?" Garmadon piped up. "You seem quite fond of him."
"I can be fond of a child without adopting him! Besides, he's only my student."
"Sure, because you definitely wrote about discovering his favorite food like he's your student," Ray rolled his amber eyes. "Just accept it, you're a father now."
"Which means I'm an uncle as well," Garmadon quietly realized.
"Again, Morro is just my student. Besides, there's no way he sees me as a fa-"
"Sensei."
The three men turned to see their topic of discussion waiting patiently by a door into the building.
"Excuse me for interrupting, but I completed my task," the boy said after he came over.
"Good job! Let's go inside now, okay?" the younger Dragoni crouched to be closer to Morro's eye level.
The boy with a green streak nodded happily and softly made his way back into the temple.
Ray and Garmadon shared a look as Wu rose to his full height and followed, waving the two over.
"Not a father, he says," Ray mumbled before heading inside with Garmadon.

-eyes at Snowball- can we have some infooo?
snowball has changed quite a bit since his previous incarnation...let's find out how!
For starters...I decided he sounds like Nergal now!
I like to think he was one of the 'ambassador' animals for a zoo or something before dipping to explore the world beyond his home town, and eventually he'd meet the mysterious arctic researcher and their lab partners/sled dogs Cookies and Cream, Red Velvet, and Breakfast Sandwich... and after hearing about their plans to research the penguins there, even after knowing what that would entail (the free visit to Area 51 you don't return from...he agreed to help them.
So! I'd imagine that after Scrabble and Rolly escaped it'd be much harder, if not impossible for the researcher and their lab partners to sneak on the island with the EPF and civilians being on the alert for dogs and suspicious pawprints. Heck, even disguising themselves is a crapshoot what with the ah, two bears working for the EPF at the time (Mukluk and Chauncey, naturally) would be able to smell the difference right away...but they'd never expect a fellow penguin to join and relay information back to the researcher now would they? (Of course, one should if working with someone already planning to do unethical tests on penguins is someone you can actually trust, let alone expect not to throw you under the bus for their gain when you're a penguin....but Snowball did not! If anything bad happened to the captured penguins, obviously he'd be fine and exempt from whatever was in store for him. Obviously.)
I imagine while he was an agent, he probably became a Tech agent in order to get closer to Gary and (ideally) find out a way to sabotage the penguins he was targeting. Can't stop the dogs from piling them when their spy phones mysteriously stop working before they can call for help. :^)
I imagine he's posh, and pretty picky and particular about things. He'd refuse to eat say, caviar unless it was very fresh and he saw it being prepared for example. He's also very persuasive, which combined with him becoming an agent is a pretty bad thing...
Despite not working with Herbert, I think he'd admire Herbert and find him attractive. Herbert doesn't not approve of that. I imagine Board Guy catches feelings for him, but it's. Very much not reciprocated.
He's pretty interested in biology, psychology, and similar sciences and considers himself an expert...but really, it's mostly surface level knowledge.
I imagine the researcher probably wanted as many captives test subjects as possible, but after many discussions it was narrowed down to: Scrabble and Rolly (for revenge after the two of them ruined their first attempt and may or may not have sunk their research ship in their haste to get away, and also because one is dragony and the other is a living drawing), Richter (because they wanted to see what was up with this unauthorized spy camera that no other researchers mentioned, especially if it was allegedly sapient), Gambit (because of the fact they were magically changed by the Box Dimension), Blanche (because she's a Frost Bite), Gary (so the EPF would take a hit from losing one of their most important guys, and also because the researcher wants to study his huge brain) and Test Sled (specifically because Snowball was angry at them for cutting ahead in line at the Coffee Shop once, since they're not an agent nor different from the average penguin in any way).
Puffles do not like Snowball. He does not like them either.
Of course, selling out your own kind so you can feel a smug sense of superiority makes about as much sense as voting for the leopards eating faces party with the expectation that it's okay since they won't eat your face. And brother, much like those leopards who can enjoy a good face, when the researcher decided that he's an 'unnatural color for an adelie'? It was over, and he too was captured alongside them.
Snowball probably tried to capture the Elite Puffles alongside the captured agents (and civilian) but considering Flare is powerful enough to make blue fire....yeaaah, he probably only got Bouncer at most since he figured she was the least dangerous option.
It's hard to tell in his most recent drawing since his flippers are in the way, but he has markings like this penguin. Pants...
Tumblr media
I imagine when the others get out, Rolly can't just leave the guy to be tested on for eternity despite everything and they all escape together...with the stipulation that he has to be watched by the EPF and is expected to go to reformation classes for a while. Whether or not he actually becomes better or simply finds a new person to work under? Only time will tell!

Apprenticember... 26: Alastor
How has your mc changed since you first made them?
Doing this a day early for a very simple, but sentimental reason:
Tumblr media
This image is my earliest “recording” of Alastor’s existence. It’s dated 25th of December, 2012. While I came up with him a bit earlier than that, the conversation detailing his origin occurred on Skype of all things and is lost now, so 25th it is. And on 28th, I used him in a roleplay for the first time.
Pretty incredible that it’s been entire 10 years.
So let’s take a little trip down a memory lane! I’ll go over his origin, then looks, and then some notes on personality.
Origin
Tumblr media
(Art by MilkyWayka)
Alastor was technically made for an OC of my friend’s (the artist’s) at the time. I saw a lonely shapeshifting alien with a tragic backstory, I offered to give him an emotional support dragon, and just like that, Alastor Nauruan was brought to light.
It was a modern “alternative Earth” setting and Alastor honestly didn’t even fit into it all that well, but we were 16 and 17 and didn’t really give a damn about setting logic. It was also initially an AU of Assassin’s Creed setting, so there’s that.
The roleplay lasted for several years, eventually coming to a rut due to a mix of the setting inconsistencies, our differing goals/ideas for it, and simply life preventing us from roleplaying. That hit me very harshly at the time, though now I just remember fondly the nights spent writing and gleefully discussing OC stuff instead of worrying about HS. Simpler times indeed.
But the Arcana very much “saved” Alastor, since around 2020 I was still down about the roleplay dying out and was going through a creative crisis, considering scrapping my OCs altogether. The Arcana setting very much let me breathe new life into both Alastor and Marty (who was ALSO made as a complimentary character for a different OC of the same friend, though at a later date). Obviously I had to rework his backstory to adapt to a new setting, though I also changed details like his name (Nauruan is now a family name, not just his) and the fate of his family (very much alive, unlike in his original setting).
Also if I had a penny for every time Alastor was paired with a very dangerous character with large claws covering his fingers, I’d have two pennies. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
Design: Dragon
I colored that first reference of him digitally right away, though I was very new to digital art or character design at the time.
Tumblr media
Quite a lot going on here!
- He used to be much bigger, my own notes on the bottom of that first drawing stating that he’s 30m (98′) in length and 7m (23′) in shoulder height. Also 60m wingspan somehow. I have since “shrunk” him several times, and by the time I settled on his size in the Arcana setting he was 12m (39′) long with 2.5m (8′2) shoulder height, a much more reasonably and practically sized boy.
- Obviously more saturated+darker blues than what I use now.
- Many details I’d slapped on “just because” and ditched since, like the tail tip blades (that were also dynamic and could open like wire-cutters), glowing horns, color-changing eyes depending on magic usage, large plates on the wings that are just not practical really. The markings on the wings were the first thing I removed when tweaking his design in 2013.
- The small round growths on his neck were formations of “dragon stone” that would also light up when spellcasting. He… actually still has that, in a way, it’s just merged with his skeleton rather than being shown. I want to make a proper lore post on that someday.
Tumblr media
In March 2013 I also made this model in Sculptris, so here’s a better look at his early horn set and the lil dragon rock M&Ms in his neck.
Tumblr media
March 2014! Not much changed design-wise, I was mostly showing off my digital art improvements. Didn’t know how anatomy works. Still only have vague idea tbh.
Tumblr media
A jump to 2017. Finally got rid of the wing plates, and this is the first time I gave him more of a :3 mouth shape. I was trying to figure out how to make his tail tip more reasonable, and temporarily opted out for some large spikes. They looked too bulky and odd on his frame, so now he just doesn’t have any tail tip adornments. Oh, also his neck thingies turned into spikes.
The Big RP Rut kicked into full gear around that time
Tumblr media
2018, I think the first time I finally redesigned his horns to look more natural, adding a bunch of smaller spikes for a more detailed look. Also one of the first times he clearly shows the :3 face!
After that point I didn’t really change his design until 2020-2021 Arcana implementation, settling on a somewhat simpler but very much beloved look:
Tumblr media
Design: Human/half-dragon
Tumblr media
(by MilkyWayka)
I very much sucked at drawing humans before ~2019 and was very intimidated by the prospect, so pretty much left it up to my friend after giving her some attempts at sketches and descriptions. The look didn’t really change all that much: he always had the dragon eyes, same hair a bit below shoulder length, though I could only settle on specifics when I finally had the guts to draw him properly by myself.
The one major design change was his height. When I made him, he was......190 (6′3). Yeah I have no clue either. His alien s/o was over 2m tall, so maybe I didn’t want a huge height difference for some reason?? I don’t remember the 16 y.o. ways of thinking. Anyway he was shrunk in human form as well.
I don’t have many records of the half-form, it wasn’t used much and was a kryptonite for both me and my friend (who didn’t know how to draw the dragon parts of him). The general idea for the form was the same, though I did initially give him claws on his hands as well but removed them once I realised how inconvenient claws are for… activities.
Tumblr media
I do have this drawing attempt from 2019 though where I for some reason didn’t give him scales all the way up including his ass like I did before and after this. A goddamn mystery that one.
Personality
Changed as much as you’d expect a character to change between writing of a 16 y.o. and a 24-26 y.o.. 2012 Alastor was almost childishly naive, angsty, completely “innocent” (aka “oblivious about how sexuality works for some reason despite being centuries old”). Looking back at it, I realise that he was also sort of passive/accepting of whatever bullshit happened to him until a show of dragon force was needed for the plot resolution.
Apprentice!Alastor still holds some naivety, though now it actually makes sense due to the amnesia. He also held onto his kindness and hopeful outlook on people, but he’s also more assertive even behind all his insecurities, and has his own moral framework he holds onto. His life also doesn’t just revolve around his one LI and magic anymore, but Al gets to have a social network – a small one, but a network nonetheless – and several other hobbies so he’s not just obsessed with One Thing.
Essentially that one all comes down to my own experience gain and growth into an adult, hah.
-
Tumblr media
If you’re one of the few people who care enough about this nerdy lizard to read about his “character evolution” – thank you! Support of people like you is one of the main reasons Alastor is not just still around, but thriving 10 whole years after his first appearance in the world <3

Wyvere Reviews the Dragons of Monster Sanctuary
So I decided to get Monster Sanctuary, and I’ve been having a pretty fun time!  And with all the monsters in the roster, there’s bound to be some that are draconic in nature.  And it’s been a while since I’ve done creature design reviews.  This time, I’ll be doing a rating between 1 and 10 as to how I feel about these designs.  So let’s review some dragons!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let’s start with the Ninki Nanka and their base form, Ninki.  I’m doing them both at once because there isn’t much difference between them.  They’re definitely more chimera style, with their mammalian head and reptilian body.  They’re... okay chimeras, it might just be the poor angle, but Ninka Nanka doesn’t flow quite as well as their first stage.  In both stages, I do really love the scales and how they kinda poke up.  6/10, decent enough chimera style dragons.
Tumblr media
Glowdra is another chimera-style dragon, but one far more personal to my taste since they’re an insectoid dragon.  I’m unsure if the devs knew about this, but there are actual insect dragons in legend, the pyrausta!  The glowing tail also draws a connection to the mythical creature and its association with fire.  Aside from their possible inspiration, Glowdra is quite a lovely design, with the pretty teal scales, the whiskers like that of an Asian dragon, and the little head fins.  8/10, a solid design.
Tumblr media
...that’s a cat.
...Okay, Skorch is pretty cute and a candle monster is a pretty fun concept but... that is a cat.  That is not a dragon.  If they weren’t a dragon class monster, they’d be 7.5/10, but as it stands, they’re 5/10.  Sorry, Skorch.
Before we get to the Draco family, we’re actually gonna be talking about other monsters that aren’t dragon class, but are pretty similar to dragons, since it is a pretty small class all things considered.
Tumblr media
With this, we’ll start off with Aurumtail, since they’re the first draconic monster one will likely encounter.  They’re another chimera-style creature, being basically dog lizards with traits of kangaroos and dromeosaurs.  And they’re absolutely wonderful monsters!  The variety of creatures mesh super well to create such a lovable beast!  8/10, would definitely hug!
Tumblr media
Toxiquus, the poisonous seahorse, is also pretty dragony, likely on purpose since seahorses are said to be the children of dragons.  I like them, they’re really cute with how grumpy they look!  They are saddled with a little blandness though, I feel they could use some more detail.  6.5/10, a good aquatic dragon, but still far from my favorite of this game, as we’ll see eventually...
Tumblr media
I’ll say Kame counts because they remind me of Bowser a lot, which is a definite positive.  But I kinda don’t like the face, it’s a little too humanoid in this art, and also turtles don’t have bunny noses and that doesn’t really work.  Still, a very powerful looking monster.  7/10.
Tumblr media
Qilin are a type of chimeric being with traits of a dragon, so I think they count here.  I don’t think this design went really as hard as they could tbh, the horn especially is pretty disappointing, looking more like a regular unicorn horn.  Still, a very elegant monster, the color scheme really works in that favor.  6.5/10, still would use dog lizard as a mount.
Tumblr media
Salahammer is an interesting monster, being a snake person with a dragon’s head.  I don’t think the design would’ve worked quite as well with a humanoid head tbh, the dragon head really makes the design more interesting.  7/10.
Tumblr media
We’ve also got a retrosaur monster here too!  This reptile has some nice chimeric features, with a body like the Charles R. Knight T. rexes, a head like a ceratopsid, and armor and a tail club like an anklyosaur!  8/10, a very badass monster I’d like to get eventually.
Tumblr media
HOLY SHIT I LOVE AAZERACH SO MUCH.  They’re essentially a dracolich, probably the most badass type of undead, and they’re such a good take on that archetype of monster.  That wonderfully strange skull head, those spooky back spikes, and those purple flames!  9/10, an absolutely marvelous monster.
Tumblr media
Finally, let’s discuss the most dragoniest dragons of all the monsters: the Draco family!  The base form, Draconov, is a pretty good base form, generic enough to be able to tell this isn’t them at their strongest.  7/10, a good little wyvern with tones of potential.
Tumblr media
Dracogran is the most basic evolution, and from my knowledge, the easiest to evolve.  They’re a pretty decent European dragon, the horns and the fin are pretty fun, and the proportions are very good.  7/10, a very solid derg.
Tumblr media
Oh, Dracozul...  I want to like this one, they’re an ice wyvern with a very pretty blue color scheme, but... they’re just so bland.  They could’ve gone a lot harder here, made them more sleek and give them that classic wyvern stinger tail.  5/10, still a dragon, I guess.
Tumblr media
Fortunately, Draconoir’s design is a lot more fun and interesting, being a cool Asian style dragon.  The fin is a pretty interesting element, and the color scheme works very well. 8/10, a very good dragon, but not my favorite...
Tumblr media
Dracomer is the last of the dragons, and fittingly enough, my favorite, a perfect note to end on.  It’s just got such a perfect design.  Those feet almost like flippers, that murky teal color scheme, that intimidating yet sweet face, and those gorgeous koi-like fins!  9.5/10, my absolute favorite of all the dragons of this game, and very likely my absolute favorite monster of this game!

inheriting dragon communion aspects(if my interpretation's correct)
[Meta Ask - still accepting!]
wahoo
I'm not sure if you'd prefer me focus on the possibility of inherited/shared dragon communion traits as something that would exist in the world, or Zelya's experience specifically, so I'll happily ramble about both! Before I do, though, I'm going to preface with a trigger warning for discussion of fetal harm, miscarriage, stillbirth, and developmental problems in children, and a further content warning for discussion of parental abandonment. Please do not proceed under the cut if these topics cause pain or discomfort.
Oh, and one more thing: I don't know dick about reproductive biology beyond, like, a middle school level. I'm about to be speaking on it + how magic might affect it pretty authoritatively for the sake of My Theeeories, but I'd love to hear a take about this topic from somebody who knows more.
Inherited Traits of Dragon Communion Alright, so! You're partly correct wrt: Veszelya's situation specifically. Zelya didn't inherit her mother's preexisting communion-induced dragon features; rather, her mother actively engaged in dragon communion while she was pregnant. I hadn't extensively considered the alternative you raised: that a person who engaged in dragon communion enough to have been physiologically changed might pass on those traits to a child. I think it's within the realm of possibility! Even without it being a genetic trait, it so magically alters the body that I think it would have to become relevant to reproduction somehow.
Determining factors for a child to have physical or developmental changes brought about by dragon communion would likely be 1) how extensively the parent(s) partook, and 2) which parent partook. It would be more likely to affect a fetus if at least one parent had recently and/or repeatedly engaged in the communion, and if that parent was the birthgiver, since both factors would mean the fetus would be in contact with more of that magic, and for longer. So, two extensively dragony parents would have a higher chance of producing a dragony child than alternative combinations.
Effects of Dragon Communion in Adults and Children But as previously stated, this isn't exactly Veszelya's experience. Zelya looks the way she does because her mother engaged in dragon communion during her pregnancy. Because whatever she ate helped nourish her developing child, the magic of the hearts also infused her placenta,* and Zelya then developed and was born with draconic traits like her grey skin and the ability to grow stubby horns and a short tail. While an adult human is more resilient to the magic of dragon communion, and it takes extensive, recent, and repeated instances of the ritual to get to a place where somebody gains draconic traits and eventually transforms into a magma wyrm, a fetus is far more vulnerable. That's why it only took two or three times for Zelya to experience very dramatic physical changes. People looking at her for the first time would not be remiss in assuming that she was, like, 5-7 hearts deep.
*Damn shame about dragon communion being so dangerous, because I imagine a dragon heart might be one of the most nutritious things a person could eat, if it wasn't full of highly volatile magic. Probably a great source of protein, iron, zinc, copper, vitamin B...gravel...
That being said, given that dragon communion is as much a magical ritual as it is the physical act of eating an organ, I don't think there's a precise number of hearts = number of dragon traits, or an exact benchmark that you can walk up to before you risk becoming a magma wyrm. I think it's a gradual transformation that begins the second you down your first heart. It's incredibly slow, perhaps so slow that a person might indulge a single time and never again, and subsequently live out a long and full life with only the upside of Cool Fire Breath and no other physical changes until they reach the end of their life naturally.
But when it comes to dragon hearts...well, you never can have just one, now can you? The more you eat, the more you crave. And the more times you engage in communion, there is a subsequent exponential increase in speed on the crawling effects of draconic magic. First your eyes change color, then your skin; then the texture of your skin changes, and your finger and toenails are replaced with claws. You grow horns, your bone structure changes drastically. Eventually full transformation into a magma wyrm is inevitable.
This is all speculation based on how NPCs/item text refers to dragon communion, of course. In game all you get are the cool eyeball colors. But I'm gonna interpret that as just a limitation of gameplay and the devs not wanting to influence character customization too badly. That you can start the game with a "draconian" preset is enough proof for me personally to wildly speculate on how a person gets from normal human to fire-breathing alligator.
To bring it back around to prenatal development, I also headcanon that Veszelya was very lucky to have survived this experience. If dragon communion does such a number on an adult human with the fortitude to slay a dragon, it probably does much worse to something as fragile as a human fetus. There have likely been very few of these situations, but most others likely culminated in miscarriage or a stillbirth as the fetus was unable to handle the intensity of the magic it was exposed to. Perhaps in the most dramatic case, the unfortunate infant came out looking more like a half-formed lizard than a human child. That Zelya emerged and had even a fighting chance of surviving outside the womb was a small miracle.
And on the subject of my blorbo...
Zelya's Experience Specifically Zelya has very obvious physical signs of her mom's weird pregnancy cravings on her body; but what I haven't gotten the chance to speak on (and to an extent am still figuring out) are the less visible & developmental difficulties she dealt with. So let's talk about that.
Zelya was born small, sickly, and unable to properly thermoregulate or open her eyes. Her survival was contingent on her father and a trusted friend from the academy's medical wing basically rigging up a small oven like an incubator and popping the baby inside. She wouldn't suckle properly for her entire infancy and had to be fed with cotton or a rag soaked in breast milk, and then later in an alchemically-manufactured baby formula, because her mom split the minute her daughter's chances of survival improved. As she grew, she hit developmental milestones like walking and crawling at a delayed pace. It was difficult for her to keep her balance until her little tail grew in more, at which point it was off to the races (much to her father's relief). Her overall growth remained stunted, and despite both her parents being quite tall, Zelya never got past 5'2". Her baby teeth grew in normally, but as an adult her teeth are quite pointy, and given that dragons in the Lands Between all share grabbing teeth that are angled forward, she has a little overbite. At rest her mouth hangs open naturally, and in her adolescence she had to pretty much train herself to keep it closed all the way.
But probably the most significant complications she has to live with is that she is slowly becoming a magma wyrm, just as if she had engaged in the communion herself. Her skin is always becoming scalier, she is always going to slowly sprout new horns, and eventually it’s going to do a serious number on her bone structure as her pelvis, knees, and spine stop accommodating the ability to walk upright. The slow, creeping change also manifests in low levels of chronic pain, and eventually symptoms akin to arthritis.
Zelya’s barely in her twenties at the time I’m writing her, so it hasn’t yet progressed that far; and given that she hasn't engaged in dragon communion herself at any point post her birth, the process has slowed down somewhat. It’s given her more time to do her research and desperately look for a way out of her inevitable fate. She’s before spoken on her feelings about her situation (Bad) and dragon communion at large (Also Bad), but she is typically uncomfortable talking about her biology at length. Not only is it painful, she hates having to explain herself over and over to others when she thinks about it so often herself.
Conclusion I was gonna cap this off with an examination of how Zelya’s dragony development led to her being born Tarnished and Marika’s feelings about dragons and Zelya’s feelings about her own soul, but this post is getting long enough and I’m running out of steam. I hope you enjoyed my speculation about the physical side of dragon communion, however. Themes of personal actions having sweeping consequences for others, the responsibility we have for each other, and beasthood in conflict with humanity are my favorite to explore. I also just really love dragons.
So thanks for asking, and for coming to my TEDtalk!

Calling Out Pokemon Colour Splash
@pokemoncoloursplash‘s admin, Shay, abused their moderator privileges on the Discord to kick me from the Discord. This is despite my numerous contributions to the blog, and without consultation with the other admins.
Follow @pokemon-recolored for a less kick-happy admin.
EDIT: Putting it in the main post instead of just the tags, this is a joke. Shay is wonderful, go follow them at @sybeezz for cool bug pictures.

OKAY, time for Hex to babble about their Dragon Age theories.
I was talking with a friend, and I mentioned that I had a theory that the ancient elven gods and the Old Gods of Tivinter were linked. This started a massive discussion, the fruits of which are under the cut because A, spoilers for everything, and B, it’s probably going to end up pretty long.
Okay, I’m going to start out with the first point: the Old Gods and the Evanuris.
We know that Solas locked the other elven gods away behind the Veil, but what if they weren’t entirely stopped? Between the astrariums and Flemeth/Mythal’s own dragon form, I think there’s a good possibility some of the Evanuris established a presesense in Tivinter. I know that there’s a possibility that the dragon thing was from Flemeth, not Mythal, but the statues in her temple gave off a distinctly dragony vibe.
Now, the Evanuris are supposedly still half-trapped in the Fade, therefore limited in their power. It’s therefor possible that the anchient magisters were not just trying to break into the Golden City for themselves, but to also retrieve their masters’ power. Unfortunately for them, they instead unleashed the Blight and infected the weakened gods.
But wait, what’s this about the Golden City? Why would the Evanuris’ power be locked there? Why, because it’s actually Arlathan! Either another safety precaution placed by Solas (or someone else) or the very nature of the Fade corrupted the once-great home of the elves, turning it into the Black City.
Now this is where my reasoning gets a bit shaky. In order for the Golden City to be Arlathan, then the Maker would have to fit into the elven lore. So what if he was an elder Evanuris, much like Eru Ilúvatar from Lord of the Rings and his Ainur? What if the stories about the Maker abandoning his creations was because he was also trapped behind the Veil? You could even say that Andraste had some sort of Fadewalking ability, and stumbled upon the Maker within his prison.
There’s also the Titans to consider, as well as lyrium. We know that lyrium is intrinsically linked to the Fade, and that there’s a good chance that it comes directly from the Titans. Through the minimal research I did to check and see if the numbers for the Evanuris and the Old Gods lined up (they do, if you consider that Mythal and Solas both escaped the Veil) I noticed the Forgotten Ones, who seemed to be on par power wise with the main pantheon. It was also noted that while the Evanuris were imprisoned “in the heavens” (ie the Fade) the Forgotten Ones were imprisoned “down below.” Could this mean that the Forgotten Ones became the Titans after the Veil was made?
And now for my favorite topic: Sandal. This little guy has been plaguing my thoughts since I realized that he used “not enchantment” to freeze the Oger in DAII, and ho-boy do I have some theories about him. We know that he was found in the Deep Roads, that he appears to be able to use magic to some extent, and that he may be a half-elf or half-human. There are also fun tidbits such as his journal in the Fade (found in Trespasser), the room where he was found had lavish carvings of all races plus dragons, his apparent premonitions of Old Gods, darkspawn, and maybe Solas, and oh yeah, he can apparently brutally destroy any attackers. My thoughts are that he somehow came into contact with one of the Titans, much like Valta, and that his half-bread status somehow warped the connection when compared to other dwarves. There’s also the crack theory that he’s actually the Maker, but I’m not putting any eggs in that basket.
Okay, that’s the end of that. I’m probably going to look like a total fool once someone who spent more that five minutes researching any given point comes along, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, those are just my thoughts.

Book Review: The Cryptozoologicon by John Conway, C M Koseman and Darren Naish
Tumblr media
While this blog, Dracones Mundi, is reviewing books which helped me research dragons in mythology and folklore, I shall also review this book about cryptozoology, creature design and speculative evolution. The Cryptozoologicon does not have a major focus on dragons or reptiles, but it is a good read for fans of ‘cryptids’ (animals which are not proven by science but are theorised to exist as a way to explain unusual sightings and phenomena – Loch Ness Monster, Chupacabra, Bigfoot etc.)
I would argue that the most famous book published by Irregular Books by John Conway, C M Koseman and Darren Niash is All Yesterdays, a book about palaeoart and its limitations or advantages. The most famous aspect of All Yesterdays are the drawings of modern animals in the style of paleoart, that is, modern animals where the skin is wrapped close to the bone and feathers and fur are replaced by scales, which make them excellent nightmare fuel (you’ve probably seen the terrifying swans on the internet at some point). All of these authors and artists are famous in their own right; John Conway and Darren Niash run the Tetrapod Zoology blog, and CM Koseman is well known in speculative evolution circles as someone who draws weird aliens.
The Cryptozoologicon is a good look at cryptozoology. None of the authors are ‘cryptozoologists’ in a sense that involves going out into the world with nets and cameras to try and find monsters, but Darren Naish could be considered a ‘cryptozoologist’ based on how much he studies cryptids in a sceptical manner – his latest book ‘Hunting Monsters’ is an analysis of cryptozoology. This is a book written by sceptics, so if you only want to read a book which affirms the animals are real then you may not enjoy the tone of this book.
For me, the book is a delight. I love speculative evolution, so a book entirely about analysing non-real creatures and adding realistic theories to them is very cool. Each chapter as three sub-chapters, almost like a transition from ‘not real’ to ‘if it was real’. The first section is by far the most useful in researching cryptids; it’s the background information, the legends, the alleged sightings of the animal. The next section is a little discussion; why is this animal not real, why are similar animals real, and the first ideas of what the animal could be in a more fantastic world – a marsupial bunyip, mbielu-mbielu-mbielu as a bichir fish, a chevrotain (mouse-deer relative) kelpie, etc.
The book is short, and only covers 28 cryptids (of which the ‘dragony ones’ which might interest the Dracones Mundi readership are the Row, Bunyip, Zuiyo Maru Creature, Mbielu-Mbielu-Mbielu, Cadborosaurus, Tizheruk, Buru, Hoop Snake, Minhocão, Gambo and Con Rit), but it is very educational and enjoyable despite it’s short length.
Tumblr media
The book is not intended to say “these animals are probably this…”, it is not intended to explain phenomena that people experience when they see a cryptid. One of the reasons I believe the book has such a negative tone towards cryptozoology is to make absolutely certain that the authorial intent is not lost – Naish, Conway and Koseman clearly enjoy monster concepts and creature design, and they clearly had a lot of fun in researching, writing and illustrating this book, and despite the frequent bemoaning of inconsistent or nonsensical eyewitness accounts of cryptids the book does read as a fun and exciting look at these animals. Less “oh no people are stupid for believing in the gorilla man” and more “Bigfoot is a great concept and my bigfoot design is based on Gigantopithecus”.

Spoilers for Fire Emblem Three Houses as I discuss fanfic stuff.
I don’t remeber how to add a readmore on mobile, but also layout for post editing has changed so even if I remembered I probably wouldn’t find it.
So like I really like twin!verse for this game. Byleth carries Sothis’ soul and she’s the one who lacks a heartbeat. Reus is more...normal, almost human but not quite. Originally I was gonna make him pretty normal with like...sensitivity to magic or something else but
Now I’m like. “Well, he has dragon blood from both his father and his mother (since Sothis is dragony and mother dear was meant to be a host before Byleth got that elevated role). So now Reus has a draconic nature.
I think it takes him forever to figure out transformation is a thing he can pull off, and frankly it’s pretty draining to him since he doesn’t have a crest (I read some good meta about how crests are possibly this game’s equivalent of dragonstones) or other facilitator for the transformations.
His ears are more like Corrin’s, since Reus isn’t totally dragon and is like...some percentage that’s about half I guess. Considering having, for some angst, at one point his ears get messed up, scarred and rounded. It would be related to Byleth joining the ranks of the mercenaries as a kid ‘cause she proved she could fight after rescusing Reus from people that snatched him as a kid. I need to figure out why tho and if they would do that to him to make him seem more human.
Maybe the first time Reus manages a transformation is towards the end of the part one arc, when conflicts come to a head (not...in quite the same way, as it’s Byleth vs Rhea but I’m still trying to figure out details). Not sure how or why he would do it, but that’s for me to figure out once I do some more clickity clack on it.

Tell us more about "Here There Be Queers"/the other title that I can't remember! I feel like found family is a big theme based on other posts, but I honestly don't remember much else about the plot and would love to hear about it again.
oh hell yeah found family is a huge theme with that one because folks? i am a SUCKER for found family. can’t get enough of that shit.
SO HERE’S THE PLOT. (warning: spoilers)
Our protagonist is a young knight named Athen Herrera, who, it should be noted, is a bi woman. The story begins with the kidnapping of the crown prince Thilam, beloved by his father the king and also pretty much everyone else cuz he’s just like. the best. (another note: thilam is trans and also black.) So the kingdom has been throwing knights out on missions to try and bring him home and none of them are successful, so Athen goes to the king and asks to be given a chance, even though she’s very young and very recently knighted. He’s getting desperate so he agrees.
Athen heads out on her quest. A pause to establish your mental picture of Athen: she’s a 19 year old latinx (or fantasy world with other countries equivalent) woman with dark brown hair cut short and rich brown eyes. Athen wears simple leather armor—sleeveless, because i can—and a long, flowing red cape. also, she has freckles, and folks? she’s fuckin shredded. Athen’s weapon of choice is the broadsword. Girl’s got muscles. She could bench press a grown man without breaking a sweat. ANYWAY
Athen’s first major meeting is with Dalia Joshi. Dalia is a sorcerer, in a small, poor village by the border, where she works as a fortune teller and herbalist. Dalia has an extremely negative opinion of the Royal Guard, as the knights stationed in and near her village are cruel and petty. Because of this, she does not like Athen to start out with. She comes to like her, however, after Athen comes across the local Royal Guard bullying a pair of children and fights them off. Together the two discuss the injustices and devise a strategy that ultimately leads to the two of them getting the Royal Guard run out of town and replaced due to misconduct.
Your mental image of Dalia: Dalia is a 19-year-old desi trans lesbian. She is very lanky and thin (it should be noted she’s probably not eating enough out here in this village and post-story she’ll probably get to a healthier weight) and has long black hair that tumbles past her waist. She keeps this in a braid most of the time, or just tied back from her face. Dalia wears lots of layered skirts of bright colors and patterns.
SOMETHING TO NOTE: when i draw athen and dalia, i draw athen with a sun necklace and dalia with a crescent moon necklace. idk at what point they get matching necklaces, but they have matching necklaces because they're in love and i’m a sap
Anyway, Dalia joins Athen’s quest to rescue Thilam, and the two wind up meeting Jayd. Jayd is a bit of a wild child, living on their own in a small, rundown cabin outside of another poor border village. Now Jayd has it pretty bad off. They’re young. They’ve been on their own since they were old enough to fend for themself. And, unfortunately, they are very much ostracized from the village. Why? Because Jayd is half-dragon, and people fear dragons very much.
Your mental image of Jayd: Jayd is a 14 (developmentally, or 8 chronologically—dragons age weird and they’re half human so it’s even weirder) year old black ace agender person. They have gold eyes and dark brown-black dreadlocks. Jayd has very large, clawed hands and feet, and are covered in patches of sapphire-blue scales in random patterns all over their body. Jayd might have a dragon tail? unsure about that. Eventually, they’ll learn to tap into their draconic ability to shapeshift, and they’ll be able to manifest different dragony things like wings and big teeth.
Athen and Dalia save Jayd from a bad situation re asshole villagers, get them cleaned up, and bring them along on their quest to save Thilam. The three get to the castle/fortress thing and fight an evil dragon and an evil sorcerer and I’m not gonna go into details because spoilers but it’s all very dramatic and wonderful and I love them ANYWAY
Athen and Dalia end up as girlfriends. They basically adopt Jayd. SOMETIMES A FAMILY IS TWO WLW AND THEIR DRAGON CHILD. there’s that found family i love them so much
