"I just think the world ought to be more sort of organized."
"That's just fantasy," said Twoflower.
"I know. That's the trouble." Rincewind sighed again. It was all very well going on about pure logic and how the universe was ruled by logic and the harmony of numbers, but the plain fact of the matter was that the Disc was manifestly traversing space on the back of a giant turtle and the gods had a habit of going around to atheists' houses and smashing their windows.

“What is there in this world that makes living worthwhile?”
Death thought about it.
CATS, he said eventually, CATS ARE NICE.
we love Death in this household <3

i think the reason vetinari is like. peak character to me is the combination of 1) absolute freak. i don’t think he has one personality trait that would qualify as normal. only reinforced by night watch when that porter was like “nice young man. completely batshit insane though.” 2) nobody can comment on this because he is also the absolute tyrant of the world’s most powerful city, which has the side-effect of also making people doubt themselves and wonder if they’re actually the weirdos here.
incidentally, this is why the vimes dynamic works so well because he’s one of the few characters who will just be like no this guy’s really weird wtf is wrong with him, but everyone else just looks at vimes and thinks he’s unhinged anyway so he has no legitimacy.

...and a hardboiled egg
So, the motto of the Glorious Revolution: Truth, Justice, Freedom, Reasonably-Priced Love, and a hardboiled egg. It's a very Discworld-esque joke, that slight bit of humanization to bring down the grandeur. And it's a character moment for Vimes, the idea that he's a bit too cynical and pragmatic to believe in Truth and Justice but he can believe he'll get a hardboiled egg (and of course, the tragic irony that he doesn't even get that much).
But I've been mulling it over, and I unironically think this serves as a good reminder for praxis in activism. Political change happens on multiple scales, big and small. What practical help is your movement offering everyday people?
Take the Black Panthers for a historical example. It is undeniable that they were working toward larger ideals of justice, freedom and equality. And one of the ways they did that was providing free breakfast for children.
It's not that the big-picture ideals don't matter, they do. It's not "a hard boiled egg instead of Freedom" it's "Truth and a Hard-boiled egg" or "A hard-boiled egg as part of Justice". When you're writing big speeches about The People, how else are you meeting their needs?
(Reasonably-priced love addendum of Also include marginalized groups like sex workers in your activism but that's a whole other point).

I recently noticed that I draw Sam Vimes and James Bond with almost exactly the same haircut. So Vimes's hair(line) had to go, lol
And lo and behold! I think it suits him better!

Ok, but we agree that Cheri wears A LOT of pastels right? Like of course, leather skirts and iron boots and sequins, but also her wardrobe looks like the craft store before Easter, RIGHT?????
Like first she discovered that there were colours beyond brown and grey, then she discovered pinks and purple, and then she discovered baby blue and light yellow and spring green and--

I have (yet another) personal head-canon that after killing his brother, Philip had to go into hiding and eventually change his name because EVERY FUCKING CLAWTHORNE on the Boiling Isles was looking to murder him for his crime.
EDIT: Not to mention digging up the body and making off with it.
I see the Clawthornes much like the legendary Ogg clan in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld: large, constantly squabbling amongst each other…but hurt one Ogg and the entire clan will unite against you.

Why was it that when she heard Granny ramble on about witchcraft she longed for the cutting magic of wizardry, but whenever she heard Treatle speak in his high-pitched voice she would fight to the death for witchcraft? She'd be both, or none at all. And they more they intended to stop her, the more she wanted it.

pratchett wrote a lot of fat women in his books and like 95% of them are admirable and inspirational characters who are very loved by the people around them but its the scene in the fifth elephant thats like "hey growing up as a Big Girl is really hard and theyre taught to make themselves smaller and endure countless indignities and their only option to avoid ridicule is to be unbelievably nice to their tormentors and sometimes that doesnt even work. dont you ever want to go apeshit. like dont you ever want to fucking lose it look sybil has a iron bar and shes so mad shes gonna knock out a werewolf and grab another one by the neck for never exchanging christmas cards" for me

Whoever is running the official Discworld Instagram account made a Happy Jubilee post today and... I think they may have misjudged the mood of some sections of the Discworld fandom.
Tumblr media
This is only within the last couple of hours; I wouldn’t be surprised if this list of comments and quotes grows over the course of the Jubilee weekend.
