Types of Medications that help Borderline Personality Disorder:

First things first, you need to be aware that there is not one specific medication for BPD. Unlike Anxiety, Depression- and many other mental health disorders. Borderline is not going to be cured by taking medications. The good news is that you can take medications to help BPD symptoms. As you know there is not one type of Borderline. Not every person that has BPD is the same. First you need to write down all of the symptoms that you have. When you go into see your Doctor for medications show them this list of symptoms that occur on a daily basis.

The major/ common symptoms people with BPD face:

  • Intense fear of abandonment
  • Unstable relationships
  • Having a distorted self-image
  • Impulsive behavior
  • Suicidal thoughts/ actions
  • Self-Harm
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Extreme emotional mood swings
  • Periods of dissociation
  • Explosive anger
  • Insomnia
  • Feeling out of touch with reality
  • Childhood or current trauma
  • Moderate - severe paranoia
  • Feelings of Isolation

Here are the main categories of medications that may help the symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder:

  • Anti-Psychotic Medications: This type of medication is used for Psychosis, Hallucinations, Mania, Paranoia, poor functioning.

Examples: Abilify, Saphris, Vraylar, Clozaril, Latuda, Zyprexa, Seroquel, Risperdal, Risperdal

  • Mood Stabilizers: This type of medications are good for mood stabilizers, Depression, Impulse, Anxiety and more-

Examples: Lithium, Topamax, Tegretol, Lamictal, Lithobid

  • Anti-anxiety: This type of medication may help to reduce anxiety, particularly for people who have co-occurring anxiety disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder or panic disorder.

Examples:  Xanax, Valium, Buspar,  Klonopin, Ativan

  • Anti-Depressants:  Symptoms of depression often accompany BPD, and antidepressants can help to reduce the frequency and intensity of depressive moods.

I did not name every single medication for the examples- that would be a lot. But I just wanted to give you guys the most commonly used.

I am not a Doctor and I do not recommend taking these unless you have spoken to a Doctor and they fill these prescriptions for you.

I have a question. With the whole Covid-19 thing, I can’t get into the doctor to get an actual diagnosis or therapy. I heard that BPD doesn’t actually have “parts/personalities” though. Is that true? Because if that’s the case, then what I have leans towards the DID aspect. Also, do you have any suggestions for coping methods? I’ve been dealing with panic attacks & feeling like I’m going crazy, but I can’t see a therapist yet.

Hello! I am so sorry to hear this.. I just want you to know that you are not alone, and there is a whole community on here that is for you. It’s not easy going through your day to day life when you are not sure what is going on. Craving answers and understanding as to why you are experiencing this. Thank you for coming to me with your questions, you are heard and acknowledged. You are Loved.

BPD does not have different personalities. It’s not like a multiple personality disorder. You are constantly you- but if you’re asking about different personalities like one minute you’re fine and the next you’re raging then yes. When it comes to BPD there is something that goes on called splitting. Where you could be one version of yourself the first minute and then something may set you off where you’re spiraling out of the control the next. Also referred to black and white thinking- or all or nothing. In DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy) you learn that you your emotional mind and then you have your wise mind. The day to day person can fit right in the middle but with BPD it’s kind of like bouncing back and forth. A constant cycle of: happiness, depression, anger, etc. A cycle of different emotions.

DID: Dissociative Identity Disorder- Is caused by trauma. Kind of like PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Where you have long amounts of dissociation. Dissociation is a part of BPD, but it is not as severe as to people that indure it who have DID.

Coping methods.

  • Surround yourself with positive people- a support system.
  • Keep a journal- write down everything. Your thoughts, what’s going on in your life. Write everything down.
  • Download a breathing app, it helps me calm down and try and get some rest.
  • Take time out of your day for self care: take a shower, take a nap, get some sunlight.
  • Make sure you’re sleeping at least 8 hours a night. Your rest is very important.
  • It’s okay to say no. If you can’t hangout with your friends- do activities. It’s okay, make sure you take time to decompress.
  • Learn your triggers. LEARN them and do what ever you can to avoid them right now.
  • Watch videos, movies, shows that make you laugh.

I’m so pissed over the videos that the overly boob sized YouTuber made about having DID and shit. Like, no darling, you are not diagnosed, and being self diagnosed is valid, WHEN YOU HAVE MADE RESEARCH!!!!

She didn’t even made any research and was using almost every term wrong, the only thing that I felt kind of right, was when she said that she did not control her “alters” to the front, cause sweetie, that’s how it works (unless positive and negative triggers).

But everything else was ultimately wrong, we are all extremely pissed.

Borderline Personality Disorder and FP

(Favorite Person)

When you have borderline personality disorder, your favorite person is the person that you are emotionally dependent on. There is a constant fear that this person is going to leave your life and you devote the majority of your time and day to the needs of this person.

  • Feeling a surge or jealousy when the favorite person spends time with another person or compliments another person.
  • Changing your thoughts or opinions to match your favorite person’s thoughts or opinions.
  • Switching between idealizing the favorite person and devaluing the favorite person, in the matter of seconds.
  • Mentally creating a fantastical world where you are connected to the favorite person, though it may not be realistic.
  • Needing a constant supply of attention from the favorite person and going through what feels like withdrawal, when your favorite person isn’t there.

Having a favorite person is intense, especially when you have borderline personality disorder.

My Personal Story- Favorite Person

I had a very traumatic birth, my mother was in Labor for a little over 48 hours. My head was crushed and there was a lot of pressure on my brain for a long time. Once i was delivered, It wasn’t even 24 hours before I started to not be able to breathe. The Doctors have told me that this is one of the main reasons why I have severe mental problems, as well as why I am so close to my mother. I endured severe trauma when I was still connected to my mom. People often don’t believe that my mother is my favorite person, or even my greatest friend. My entire life she was my safe haven. It was very rare that I would let anyone else hold me when I was little because I wanted to be in her arms always. I often got overwhelming amounts of anxiety when I was away from her. She was a leader in my girl scouts, she was apart of almost every activity in School. I would freeze up and panic when she was not around. To this day (I am 23 years old) I have a hard time being away from her for a long time. I have gotten better, I am able to stay at a friends house for a night or work late at night and not see her for a few days. But this doesn’t make it easy- just because I am trying hard to stand on my own. I often get anxiety attacks when I am hanging out with my boyfriend for a whole day and it hits me ‘I have to go home.. Please.’ I am 23 and I know it is time for me to move out and to do grown up things- but that is also the scariest thought. To learn to survive the day to day life without having here there almost everyday. My counselor is working with me on how to gradually let go- not as in letting go to her as my friend and my mother. Yet, letting go as being my FP and learning to cope and have a healthy relationship with her.

8, 17 and 21 :)

Heya! Thanks for sending in an ask, we love your blog by the way.

8. Do you have any non-human alters?

We have two for sure nonhuman alters.

Jake for one is nonhuman but no one really knows what he is, he’s able to take on the form of a wolf but he’s not a werewolf. He also is completely mute so he can’t speak and only commucates through thoughts. Personally, we’re unsure of his specific species but he’s always been Jake to us.

Alice is our little angel. Literally, our angel. Shes got the wings and halo to prove it but sometimes I wonder if she remembers that she is an angel. She mostly just says she likes being here with us and that this is where she’s meant to be.

Shylow is still up in the air, he doesn’t really show himself or give us enough information for me to know if he’s nonhuman or not. The most I get from him is the feeling of the color green if that makes sense but I know that he’s a powerful part of the system.

17. If you have younger parts/alters, what makes them happy or excited?

We have one little alter and that’s Alice! She really loves dressing up but recently has taken a bigger liking to online games. She loves the Little Mermaid and gets excited at the idea of talking to new people.

21. What does “recovery” mean for you?

Ah this is a tricky one…

For one, I used to be scared of this word because I thought it meant intergration and I also was scared of the word intergration because I’d came to my own conclusion of what it meant. I know better now, we know better.

Recovery means functional, being able to manage my social life, my home life, my work life, in a way that makes me happy. Recovery means being able to communicate within the system so that everyone’s needs are met and being able to talk through ones that we just can’t achieve yet. Recovery basically means communication and functionality to me.

Really fun answering these! ✨✨✨
