1966... Gemini VIII splashdown & post recovery March 17, 1966, Gemini VIII astronauts Neil Armstrong and David Scott pose with the divers of the US Navy recovery team. The Gemini VIII mission was cut short after a docking problem with the unmanned Agena target rocket. Re-entry took place over China with splashdown 800 kilometers east of Okinawa. Photo taken just before debarking USS Leonard F Mason in Naha harbor in Southern Japan. Note Scott’s NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster on black velcro at his left wrist. During this mission, besides his NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster, Neil Armstrong also wore a Longines Lindberg big crown aviator watch which belonged to his childhood hero James "Jimmie" Mattern. However, in the foreground, the Navy issued Tudor 7928 diving toolwatch on stainless steel bracelet at the wrist of the diver looks far more interesting! (Photo: NASA)

Blancpain
Fifty Fathoms Milspec 1 A stainless steel automatic wristwatch with humidity indicator Circa 1968
Blancpain's Fifty Fathoms was launched in 1953 and has since defined the specifications and qualities of the modern diving watch. Made at the request of the French Navy, Captain Robert Maloubier and Lieutenant Claude Riffaud provided technical specifications for a watch designed for combat divers. The design revolutionized the unidirectional bezel, which ensured divers could not inadvertently turn the bezel backwards thus threatening their air supply. Blancpain added their own critical feature, a humidity indicator which showed blue if the air in the case was dry. If water penetrated the case, the indicator would turn pink as a warning to the diver. Fifty Fathoms was named after the British measurement of 50 fathoms, or approximately 91.45 meters, considered the maximum depth which a diver could achieve with the oxygen mixture available at the time.
The present Milspec watch was modeled under the same military grade specifications but for civilian use.

Seiko Turtle dive watch in James Cameron's The Abyss
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today I learned that Virgil "Bud" Brigman (played by the great Ed Harris) in the highly underrated James Cameron action film The Abyss, wears an original Seiko Turtle 6309 dive watch, with black dial, black rubber strap, and a professional dive depth rating of 150 meters. Named the Turtle for it's shell shaped cushion case design that conforms to the wrist while being tough and water resistant enough to handle the pressure of deep water dives.
I have the newer version of this now classic diver, the Seiko Save The Ocean Turtle Prospex model, improved to a professional 200 meter ISO rated dive depth. The model I own is the more colorful blue wave dial known as The Great White Shark edition, with it's distinctive shark fin breaking the waves just to the right of the marker at the 8 o'clock position, and the even more obvious shark tail on the balance end of the sweep second hand.
While it might not be as Iconic as a Rolex Submariner or an Omega Seamaster on the wrist of James Bond, it's just the type of working man's tool watch that would be worn by a man who lives and works on a deep-sea submersible oil rig, and I can say from experience that it's tough and reliable, very comfortable to wear, and it looks as good in real life as it does on Ed Harris' wrist! 🌊🐢🦈
