Myne Door Defaults

So I was playing the other day and just happened to look over at Almeric Davis' door at the privacy sign and think, I wanna default that. Ended up being a 3-part project defaulting the sign, the door and the decals on the back.

The 3 wood textures are replaced with textures from Michelle, here and here. The decals are replaced with 3 hobby posters from @simsinlowspace here. And the privacy sign image is from freepik, edited with simlish text by me.

It's a little wonky, there's a warp for some reason but I think I did pretty good.

Because I defaulted the decals with a sports poster, a science poster and a games poster I decided to make custom recolors with one poster from each of simsinlowspace's hobby sets. Including the sports/science/games so you can just have them purely as custom if you don't want to default.

Alright, one last post about this for the road.

Do you like Fandom Exchanges? Do you like Hurt/Comfort? Do you like MCYT? Are you 18? Is this too many questions?

WELCOME TO THIS POST ABOUT THE HURT/COMFORT EXCHANGE. PULL UP A CHAIR.

This, as I just learned earlier this month, is a massive multi-fandom exchange on the theme of hurt/comfort. It's open to both artists and writers, and the expecations is a fic of at least 1000 words, or a piece of artwork that is not on lined paper and is at minimum clean linework that is at least 500x500 pixels. And you have from 16 March to 13 May to work on your gift so like, thousands of time. So easy. You can do that in a weekend, right? So achievable.

Some details: this is a massive multifandom exchange, so like, NSFW is allowed, and that means you have to be 18 to sign up. Also as it's a massive multifandom exchange, the mods are not policing what shows up in the tag set (there are literally 620 fandoms listed, can you imagine policing that, no,) so you almost definitely will see stuff in the tag set that makes you go "huh," but that's when you get to go "boy people sure like some stuff", and then you move on and go on to the stuff you're actually writing.

Tag Set?

Glad you asked. Okay so big Ao3 exchanges normally work off a Tag Set. They run a preliminary section where people can submit relationships and characters etc to a massive list, and then once it comes to actual sign-up time, you are only able to select stuff that is in the tag set for your offers and requests. So nomination period (where we're in right now), is important if you want to join an exchange, cause it lets you make sure that the relationships you actually want to offer, and then write/draw, are available to you.

Okay so, a general exchange works by allowing people to Offer and Request what fandoms and characters they want to write, and then the algorithm matches people's Offers to Requests, so that that person who Requested TMNT art is matched with someone who Offered that yes, they want to draw the turtles.

Within this specific exchange, they go a bit more granular. You both specify the relationship, and because this is a Hurt/Comfort exchange, you specify who exactly is getting hurt.

And then because this is a FREEFORM exchange, you specify what freeform you want, which is your actual prompt for the fic/art you want. Some examples of the freeforms.

I wanna say: Every time a creative puts their work out their, whether it be fanfic, or art or anything really, they are being extremely vulnerable and very brave. Everybody is on their own creative journey honing their craft, and we as the audience have no way of knowing where they are on this journey. People pour their heart and soul into their creations, they snatch free moments from their lives to create, so its incredibly disheartening when folks are nasty in the comments. If you are participating in fandom, and consuming this content, choose to be kind, and supportive towards the people that are putting it -- and their personal time and effort -- out there for free. I'm not saying don't review or ask questions, but do it from a place of encouragement, not nastiness. Wrap it up like a worming pill in a bit of cheese. Concrit = when asked for. If you don't enjoy someone's stuff, there's a back button. It costs nothing to leave well alone. DL:DR If you are shitting on fanfiction as a medium, and its creators, then writing fanfiction yourself, maybe examine why you're doing that? Is it because you want to take writing seriously, yet you're insecure and afraid to admit it to yourself? Its ok to to want to write fiction, but its not ok to think you're better than/ above anyone else out there. We're all at different levels, and everybody is improving and learning. Maybe you could learn a thing or two, and improve on things too. For the love of god, if you're downloading people fics and rewriting them, (even for your own amusement) then don't admit it publicly! Maybe examine why you think you have the right to download other people's stuff and publicly admit you rewrite it. Writers and fics are not named because "that would be rude" but I posit that doing it in the first place is rude, and disrespectful.

For This Week's Blog Post: We Need YOU!

One of our long-term projects at Duck Prints Press - something we've been working on on-and-off for a while but haven't made public yet - is a Fandom Lexicon. There are a lot of websites and blog posts that include parts of a list of fandom-specific language, but we've not been able to find just a simple glossary, so we decided to put one together. (We're not saying such websites don't exist...they surely do...but we also wanted to do our own!)

There are many challenges in making such a list (one of the most obvious being what to include - how general a term is "too" general for inclusion?) but we've been doing our best, casting a wide net, and picking the collective brains of people involved in the Press.

And...we've basically exhausted our own knowledge/memories/ideas, which is where you, yes YOU, come in!

We want your terminology! What are fandom words you've encountered and said "wait, what does that mean?" What's old fandom slang you used to use that you don't see anymore and know that some newbie would be confused by? What are words you wish you could have found on a list when you first joined fandom?

We've already put together a list of 222 general fandom terms and abbreviations (some definitely "fandom specific," others more "internet general slang") and 29 fandom-specific abbreviations (this list is, obviously, much more nascent). You can see the entire list here. (note: there is citrusy terminology on this list, both literally the citrus scale is on there, but also things like A/B/O, BDSM, etc. - it's a lexicon, after all.)

Currently, we are looking for:

general fandom terms/online terms that would be confusing to people out of context; and

over-arching fandom abbreviations (e.g., MCYT = Minecraft Youtuber, but we don't want every single abbreviation for every sub-part of the fandom - just the level that if someone saw the abbreviation "in the wild" they'd have at least some frame of reference).

Long term, we'd love to do fandom-specific lexicons as well (NOT wikis, mind you, literally just "this abbreviation often means this" with links to resources that can give more information) but that's a much larger project that would require recruiting people with enough fandom-specific knowledge for each fandom, and is not our current aim, so please don't send us stuff like that.

Have you been in fandom a long time? Do you just HATE when people use the word "drabble" wrong? Have you got a list of words you wish fandom still used, or a list of newer terms you regularly look at and go "wait wtf does THAT one mean?"? Send us your words, so we can incorporate them into our list!

You can add a comment! Put your words in a reply! Add your words to the tags! Drop us an ask! However you feel like sending the words our way, go for it.

Chapter 1 -> The Big Bang

When everything started to be everything, there was Time and the Night, and while the galaxy started to form and be something we had Destiny, and when the cosmos relaxed enough for life to thrive and live we had Death to collect them at their final stop, and when life started to think we had Dream.

Now, there was more 4 siblings to the Endless, children of Night and Time, but this story is about the veil of darkness that ripped itself out of the night to follow such strange being that was Dream.

That veil transformed into the shadows and deep waters of the universe consciousness, and made their home just outside the dreaming, in a way so that they could always be by Dream's side.

They surrounded Dream in their veiled embrace ever since his first "corporeal" appearance, a presence always there, cold but so sweet. They had no form nor shape, but they teased the Endless relentlessly always looking out for his attention. They didn't have a name, Dream at the time did not have one either, but he could speak and he could create.

Sometime later on their shared existence, Dream called them Darkness of the Endless, but that wasn't true, they were Darkness but they were nothing like the Endless, they didn't have a purpose nor "job" to do, they just exist and that was it.

It was at the shores of the Night, right out of the Dreaming that she was formed, the Endless molding the shadows as he would with a dream or nightmare and then she was there! With a mouth that spoke, a nose like they saw on many others beings, ears capable of hearing everything and more and eyes a pitiless black that reflected the cosmos but beautiful nonetheless, Dream gave her a body made of anything but herself and what she was, with no desire other than give her a form she liked and was satisfied. There she was!

Rules

The exchange is multifandom, and open to both artists and writers. Fandoms do not have to have a canonized Ao3 tag to participate.

You must be a member of the Discord, for communication purposes.

Once assigned, participants will have 48 hours to deliver their gift.

Artists are expected to deliver a decent sketch, Writers have a 300 word minimum

No AI-Generated content.

This exchange will be operating on DL:DR when it comes to what the mods will police and what we ask you to respect in terms of other people’s requests. The single exception is RPF, which has additional rules. 

RPF is allowed. Persons nominated for RPF must be famous in their own right and over the age of 18 if written in romantic (/) relationships. Persons famous chiefly for their participation in facist regimes or as serial killers will not be considered for nomination. Mods reserve the right to reject RPF nominations in poor taste.

Original Work is allowed. Use the "Original Work" fandom. If it is important to you that a person within a specific pairing is a specific gender, make that clear within the tag, for example "Middle-aged King (M)/His Loyal Bodyguard (NB) (Original Work)".

As this is a 13+ exchange, there is no NSFW allowed, even if you’re sure that both you and your recipient are adults. This applies both to sexual content and to extreme (e-rated) gore.

Tags must be seconded (nominated twice) to make it into the tag set.

You can nominate tags for up to ten fandoms, with up to twenty tags nominated in each.

You will have one week to submit relationships and characters to a tag set, one week to write your prompts, and 48 hours to deliver your gift.

Participants are required to request at least three fandoms (with associated prompts), and offer to create around at least three fandoms.

To increase matching options, at least one prompt has to work as an art prompt, at least one prompt has to work as a fic prompt, at least one of your prompts has to be either Gen (platonic relationship) or a single-character prompt.

Please include anything you absolutely don't want to receive (Do Not Wants) in the Optional Details field in your AO3 signup. Only DNWs in the Ao3 signup will be enforced, and mods will not enforce DNWs that are overly restrictive or used to box a recipient into a specific gift (i.e. I don't want anything that isn't a space au with the mc's other major love interest dead off screen.)

Homework Default Replacements

Something different today! I've had default replacements for the teen&YA homework for some time, but I was never able to find ones for the children homework that I liked, so I decided to make my own! But while I was making them I liked them so much that I decided to make teen&YA ones too! Bonus! ✨

The top four are the children defaults, images from freepik. The bottom four are the teen, images from @sim-saurus. I made tiny edits to change any English text to Simlish. The blue teen one also replaces the YA one, which is why it's pretty non-descript in terms of what subject the homework could be for. I also did the writing on the insides. The child one says "My favorite thing about this subject is that today I learned how to" and the teen one I went into a whole lil essay about how much fun I was having creating these and how my cat was making me very warm. I then put a page break and had a teacher take 2 points off the top section because my essay wasn't academic enough 😂 which is something I got told all throughout college

Files are compressorized, and remember to remove any other homework defaults you may have before using these. I made them as separate packages in case you wanted to use the child but not the teen or viceversa, or to mix n match with another default.

So recently I saw a makehugospin meme from 2013 that I thought was an interesting scenario: Javert is sick and the Amis comfort him. Somehow. And I was wondering if there are any tumblr writers who would like to give this a shot. (Well technically I wrote a fic, but it's weird, to say the least.
