Hello! Per the define transgender q I thought I'd put my 2 cents out there as a trans person. The way I'd define it for me is that the way I "see" myself to be incongruent with how I was assigned at birth. To me its more transition/dysphoria based, it has nothing to do with how I express myself via clothes or mannerisms and everything to do with how I feel about myself internally. Not to say gender expression isn't important, especially in someone's transition and wanting to be recognized as the gender they are, but if you only think of trans people wanting to transition in order to fit a stereotype of the opposite sex then that just reduces everything they do to a performance or an act. And gender expression is important whether ur trans or cis, gnc or not. 

Idk. Being trans is just part of who I am, same way that I have brown eyes. Im not "escaping" from anything nor am i confused. I think because ppl recognize/come to terms with being trans differently is also why they say being trans is different for everyone. Even if there is a clear cut definition, it's still gonna look different based on how or if someone is able to medically/socially transition and how far in their transition they are, and anti-trans laws will affect that as well. Community, activism, and support are important regardless. At the end of the day I just want to be able to feel safe in knowing that if I got in a major car accident tomorrow where I will need intensive medical care, that the medical team will treat me even though the parts I have don't match what it says I should have on my driver's license.

definitely with u on the gender expression part - i think its a rly common problem that someone sets out on a transition bc of dysphoria & bc they want to be viewed as & treated as the opposite gender by society but somewhere along the way they end up leaning way too heavily on stereotypes for that and they do find themselves trapped in a performance and end up ridiculously self-concious abt it all (like all the transguys who worry endlessly about if they're walking right if they're holding their drinks right if they're SLEEPING right, that one guy who found himself googling "do men eat oatmeal" -_-)

also v interested in ur statement that how ppl "recognize/come to terms with being trans" affects how they define the concept in general.. im gonna think on that but im not sure i know what u mean 🤔 i think i have to twist that one round a little fr it to make sense 2 me... id agree that people often have different motivations for transition & trans identity and that would affect how they define the term... i think that's sort of the same thing, it's just that u see being trans as smthn inherent to a person whereas i see it as a choice so we'd use different wording.

n yeah ive been thinking more abt where exactly i think legal lines n definitions need to be drawn i think im gonna make another post abt it but ur right that community, activism, & support are important regardless and i think for the most part CAN function regardless. & i understand ur concerns abt getting medical treatment - ppl always talk about 'trans healthcare' just meaning medical transition but that's mostly a whole separate thing to actual trans healthcare which is in a scary state rn (& getting scarier in some places - didn't one state recently pass a law that medical staff are legally allowed to refuse treatment if someone is lgbt?) This is the decision i arrived at that’s right for me now, and i may decide differently somewhere down the line, but i reached the conclusion that i will not be pursuing top surgery in the near future. And i kinda want to talk abt smth that i think is pretty pervasive which is the pressure on AFAB people to alter their bodies, temporarily or permanently, no matter where u look, in order to achieve some type of aesthetic ideal

There’s normative society doing normative society on one side, right, the usual beauty standards and all that. but there’s also, i feel, a crazy amount of pressure from trans spaces as well. I don’t think this is intentional or malicious but i do think it may be an extension of the same normative bullshit we are trying to escape, just in a new form. Hormones and surgery (lots of chest scar positivity!) are presented as the end goal or natural extension of transness—and i’m sure for a lot of the trans ppl making this art this is autobiographical in nature & i think that’s wonderful and it should exist. BUT. It shouldn’t be the only type of aspirational transmasc positivity we see

I think it can make people rush into making medical decisions that are not reversible and ALWAYS carry risk, or into getting injured w/ binders (poor quality and/or used incorrectly). It can also make ppl feel or even be seen as less legitimate or as “faking it” bc they’re not going whole hog w/ the medical side of things, which sucks for everyone; even ppl who will eventually transition medically may suffer in the interim from this type of mentality. As if it’s the physical transformation that suddenly makes u trans

I think ultimately people have to decide for themselves what they want and i don’t think gatekeeping is the answer. Like, i weighed my options, talked to doctors, and made my own decision—nobody held a knife to my neck and made me go ahead w/ smth i wasn’t 100% sure i wanted. I think i would definitely like a flat(ter) chest but i don’t like the risks of surgery, of recovery, of getting an unsatisfactory result i’ll have to live with, and the possibility of post-op problems coming up years down the line. But that’s me, making a decision today. What anyone does to their own bodies is obviously each person’s choice and responsibility

i just think there needs to be more vocal acceptance of AFAB trans bodies who are just Hanging Out without any intervention. Not even androgynously. We’re fine!!! Normalize being AFAB and not doing SHIT to change how ur body is perceived, and being ok w/ it. There’s so much power in being self assured in ur identity regardless of what ur body happens to be like

Okay anon, you are ill informed about trans topics, especially when it comes to trans and nonbinary children.

Hormone blockers are NOT child abuse. Hormone blockers are carefully discussed between the child and their caregivers, and then when they are ready, they go to a doctor and then discuss this at great length.

Detransitioning is another topic, but virtually every trans/nonbinary person I know and those I have read online testimonies confirm that hormone therapy/blockers have saved their literal lives. Trans and nonbinary children deserve caregivers who will listen to what THEY need in order to feel at their best selves. When they are of age, then they are able to access estrogen and testosterone. Plan for top and/or bottom surgeries. (Not every trans/nonbinary person's transition looks the same and medically transitioning is not something that some people want/need. Another topic for another time!)

Child abuse regarding this subject at hand are transphobic caregivers. No trans or nonbinary child should have caregivers who will harm them if they come out to them as any gender identity that isn't cisgender.

Also, it is telling that you're a TERF and a transmisogynist because of what you said regarding anatomy parts. You are part of the problem when you reduce trans girls, women, and femme identifying folk to their genitalia. You should be ashamed of yourself.

greetings, i just want you to know that gender and gender expression are not tied to sexual characteristics, but to ones own sense of self. Therefore trans people can have and want characteristics of two sexes and still have only one gender. That would still make them transgender. Dysphoria does not define being trans and there are trans people who are fine with not transitioning. People who choose to transition and people who don't do not invalidate each other because the validity of their identity never came from their body in the first place. Expecting trans people to rigidly conform to gender norms set by cis societies completely misses the point.

If you have no desire to TRANSition then how are u TRANS? U can live ur life entirely as a cis person and somehow be trans?

Thank you for coming to us with this concern, but gatekeeping is actually an extremely broad term used to describe many situations in which someone tries to prevent others from getting into a group or accessing resources.

This ranges from gatekeeping in fandoms where people claim that someone isn’t a “real fan” unless they do/know x, y, and z, to people gatekeeping marginalized communities, to examples of gatekeeping more similar to the one you’re describing where people are denied healthcare or other important services based off of an aspect of their identity.

In this case, we’re referring to people who are gatekeeping the lgbt+ community. People who add requirements on to identities, who say that having an lgbt+ identity is not enough, you must also have/be x, y, z in order to really be lgbt+. Examples of this include people who think you need to medically transition/want to medically transition or have gender dysphoria to be trans and people who believe you need to be “gold star” in order to be a real lesbian or gay man.
