#do not talk to me about critical role. I hate that shit! this post is about You and Your Friends Specifically
Text
I'm probably get a bunch of shit for this, but I honestly don't care anymore.
So I watched Matt Mercer's video that he posted on his socials where he discusses what is currently happening in Palestine. And I'm gonna be brutally honest, this was a frustrating video to sit through.
First off, I respect him for contacting his reps directly and asking them to push for a ceasefire, and I will commend him for giving money to Pro Palestine charities.
That being said, I hated how vague he had to be in his wording, because he's obviously scared of being blacklisted by the industry.
Notice how he refereed to what was happening as the "War in Gaza" instead of a genocide.
Notice how he referred to the Palestinians who were brutally killed as "civilians" instead of Palestinian civilians.
But I think what frustrates me the most about this video is that once again, another white liberal feels guilty about "Not doing enough" when it came to doing the right thing.
Matt Mercer has one of the biggest platforms imaginable, all he had to do was voice his support for a ceasefire and the majority of Critical Role fans would have come out in droves to push for a ceasefire.
Also, what the fuck is with this "It isn't my place to speak on this issue" talk? Innocent Palestinians are on the verge of being wiped out, and you're seriously worried about having a white savior complex?
Get the fuck outta here with that nonsense.

Musings from a Hazbin Fan and Hotel Employee
Yeah, that's right—I'm posting to this blog for the first time in years because I got into Hazbin Hotel of all things. Not only did I get into this cursed fandom, I'm writing fan fiction for it. Fan fiction. I think the last time I wrote fanfiction was...2012? 2013? And I only ever told 3 people about that one. Now here I am posting on main. The brainrot truly is unquantifiable.
If you're one of the few people that survived the purge of those I know IRL, congratulations. Please don't judge me lol. Anyways, actual musings are below the cut!
So I’m writing a fun little fanfic on AO3 and after someone left a comment (if you’re reading this, still genuinely one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me about my craft), it occured to me—as a Hazbin Hotel enjoyer, I have a pretty unique perspective on the series as an IRL hospitality professional. So! Thought it would be some cute bonus content to talk a little bit more about my life at an actual hotel and how it’s impacted my experience with Vivziepop’s hit series.
Please note: this is written purely for shits and giggles. I don’t actually have any issues with the setting of Vivzie’s narrative or how it plays into the stories she and her team want to tell. I fucking love this show, to a potentially unhealthy degree, and I haven’t had this much fun with a series since like…okay well my hyperfixations change like every few months, but still. Point is, this isn’t actually critique, or satire, or anything with negative or critical intentions. TLDR; this post is for funsies, get off my dick.
So Who TF Am I, Anyways?
A little background on myself, for context. I’ve been employed at my hotel for almost a year now, and it’s my first hospitality job. I work in the Sales and Events department and I’ve come to learn that Group Business is actually integral for keeping a hotel up and running. When your average person (read: me before this job) thinks about hotels and traveling, you’d think it’s all about the families, bloggers, and individual travelers when it comes to guests and revenue. But in actuality, most of a hotel’s revenue—at least in the market I work in—will come from contracted room blocks and events.
That’s where folks in my department come in. We work with clients to negotiate contracts and secure occupants for our hotel year round. Simply put, if we don’t do our jobs well, then no one else gets hours. So as much as the anti-capitalist in me will sometimes hate being a cog in the machine, it is really fulfilling to be able to help clients meet their needs while also making sure my coworkers are able to put food on the table.
Speaking of being a cog in the machine, because of my role in Sales, this means that whenever I travel or think about hotels, I’m always thinking about the revenue side of things. I also work more with the Events team, so operations are also on the forefront of my mind. Which leads me to my principal quandary for this little blog post:
How in the Hell does the Hazbin Operate?
I have a laundry list of questions. A laundry list that’s almost as big as the actual pile of dirty laundry that is currently plaguing my bedroom floor. I will summarize (which is a generous word given how fucking verbose I can be) below:
Issue #1: Revenue Generation
Okay listen, I know Charlie is the Princess of Hell. I know she probably has unlimited capital, whatever that looks like in the HelluVerse. And I know the Hazbin is literally there to help rehabilitate people so charging them to stay would be counterproductive.
But my dude…do you understand how much money would be needed to run an operation of this scale?
At the end of Season 1, the new Hazbin is huge. Like it easily looks as big, if not bigger, than the hotel I work at which has nearly 500 rooms. Do you know how much revenue our team has to generate to keep this place running? Do you know how many millions our target goal is set at for each quarter? How many hundreds of thousands my coworkers’ individual quotas are set to? And sunshine in a bottle over here doesn’t charge her residents anything?????
How does she get all those decorations? How does she order food or inventory? We know Hell has an economy, like Angel literally says he needs to save money for drugs in his first appearance. Is she…does she even pay her staff???
It is utterly appalling that Charlie is able to operate a hotel of this scale, both because of how it doesn’t make sense from a business perspective and because there are IRL billionaires that could probably do the same thing and solve homelessness overnight.
Speaking of scale:
Issue #2: The Hazbin’s Systems, Or Lack Thereof
Okay so, yes, there’s only like…one official resident of the hotel, maybe two if Cherri moves in and doesn’t become a staff member (RIP Pentious, you would have loved living with Cherri Bomb). With the staff the way it is, that’s a solid 5:1 ratio, which is beyond ideal. But—and I touch on this in the fic—I feel I must reiterate: the new Hazbin is fucking massive. And you know what that means? It’s going to be able to hold a lot of guests. Guests that will need staff to take care of them. Let’s review:
Charlie is the owner and mostly teaches classes. Vaggie is the co-owner and kind of acts as the Executive Assistant to Charlie’s General Manager. I guess Alastor is the Hotel Manager? I’m gonna be honest, I have no idea what he does, but generally speaking he’s supposed to be the jack of all trades and manage the rest of the staff. Niffty handles Housekeeping and I guess would be the director of that. Husk is the bartender but like canonically only really eats pub food so he definitely can’t be the Food & Beverage head.
Let’s say we scrap the Sales and Revenue Departments because clearly they don’t need income, but we keep a Marketing position so that Charlie can get the word out about the hotel. That leaves us with the need for Engineering, Front Desk, Rooms, and F&B staff. And like, not just one person—that would fucking suck—but proper staff. And given their track record of organization and managing the hotel…let’s just say, I would not be applying to the Hazbin Hotel anytime soon. Honestly, it sounds like that job would qualify to be the new tenth circle of Hell.
What Does the Hazbin Get Right About IRL Hospitality?
So yes, clearly the world of the Hazbin Hotel leans towards the more fanciful—it is a story about Hell after all. However, there have been some moments that have made me chuckle as a hotel employee, things that are relatable for us in the hospitality world. Allow me to highlight them for you below:
Everyone is Bat Shit Crazy
Hospitality professionals are weird. So weird. Before I started my job, I was terrified of the level of professionality I would need to have. When I first got hired, I was given a whole packet on dress code and appropriate conduct. As you can probably tell from my writing style, this was concerning: I can be professional when I need to be, but I cannot maintain that guise for extended periods of time. Call it my toxic trait.
I also already had this impression of poised and put-together hotel staff from my previous experiences with travel. All the Front Desk agents would be in these clean and wrinkle-free clothes with kind yet business-forward attitudes, office workers would be walking around in full suits, and occasionally you’d see the hotel management on the floor if you were looking. Let me tell you now—it is a facade. An act. An incredible stage production unfolding in real time where all the staff do their absolute damndest to make you feel like you are in an organized and professional institution. Not unlike a certain hit animated musical.
My direct supervisor, the literal Director of Catering and Events, once told me that being a liiiiiittle crazy was a prerequisite for working in our department during the hiring process for a new Sales Manager. She was wrong—the prerequisite is not “a little” crazy. The prerequisite is being bat shit insane. And it’s not just our department, oh noooOoooOo, it is every department. Downstairs in our little basement dungeon, we make out of pocket comments, scream at random intervals, and swear way more than we should (that one might be my fault…according to my partner I swear more at work than at home and apparently it’s rubbing off on my colleagues), but that behavior is in no way restricted to just the Sales Team.
I process the checks that are sent to our property and our Director of Rooms makes me say “can I get a WITNESSSS” before she signs off on the drop log (Charlie-core). If I don’t say it high pitched enough or with enough vigor, she makes me do it again. I once watched a guy in Engineering climb a tall step ladder balanced with two legs on a platform and a third leg balanced on a wooden plank his coworker was holding steady. The fourth leg was over the open air. Let me reiterate: the open. Fucking. Air. Tell me you can’t see Angel Dust and Cherri doing that shit.
Speaking of Engineering, you wanna know what dumbass thing happened just this morning? The Regional Director of the department—regional meaning he manages teams all across our area, like top level type shit—told us about this cursed ass Instagram trend he found where allegedly, putting ketchup on a Kit Kat tasted like fudge. So right there and then, him, myself, and two other coworkers decided ‘why the fuck not?’:
Tumblr media
I would never seek it out willingly again, but I honestly didn’t hate it.
The point of all of this is to say—the antics the Hazbin crew get up to? Totally realistic. I could see my coworker Robert throwing me into an active battlefield against my will. We have deadass done the role playing thing Angel and Pentious did during our trainings, and it was just as unhinged. Every day some shit happens at this hotel and I’m just like, “Yup. That could happen in Hazbin.”
“Call Now! Or Don’t! I Don’t Care! We Still Don’t Have a Working Phone!”
I would like to preface this section by saying: if you happen to be a Front Desk associate, I’m sorry. This is not directed at you, this is directed at your managers and their communication skills that may or may not exist. If you are somehow a manager reading this, uh—first of all, cringe. Second of all, I hope these next few paragraphs don’t apply to you. If they do and you’re offended: that’s a certified you-problem, babes.
There are three certainties in this life: death, taxes, and miscommunication from your fucking managers. Tell me why in this past week alone I have been in 5 different email threads regarding fuck-ups and complaints from guests about things that we had clearly communicated. Tell me why in these email threads, people were attempting to throw me under the bus or shift the blame to my team. Tell me why I have gone to every single individual office in my department complaining about this. Tell me why this isn’t the first time this has happened.
Another hotel tidbit: across the board, Q1 (Jan-Mar) is supposed to be slow, for all of hospitality. It’s the time to get the metaphorical phone lines working, ya know? Our Q1 was stupidly busy, so I get it, people were slammed and short staffed. But like… we had time. Time to iron out our communication, time to create systems and processes that would ensure we’d be all set when things got busier. Yet here I am at the start of Q2 with an entire fist shoved up my ass being puppeted around to fix other people’s mistakes.
It’s times like these when I go back to rewatch Hazbin for the like 26th time and I watch Charlie and Alastor run the hotel and I’m just like “whyyYyYyYyYyYy”. Like I KNOW Vaggie has had days where she’s like, “what…what am I supposed to be doing right now? Like what is my job, what… What?”
It’s not just Front Desk either. It’s every department, even my own bosses. Like the call is coming from inside the house, sweetie, why did you tell this Sales Manager that I was taking care of all her commissions but you didn’t tell me this. Why am I blocking a room for an Orientation the following Monday at fucking 5:45 PM on a Friday. Why am I JUST finding out about a VIP guest when I have been asking you if you had any notes for me for the whole week.
I touch on it in my fic as well but like…pretty sure Charlie just, decides to host her classes day of. And that drives me insane. Like I…there are processes. Things that need to be done so that everyone is on the same page. You don’t just wing this shit, that’s how you end up with Susan calling your Director to tell her that you’re a useless waste of space not even deserving of the air in your lungs because you didn’t give her her fucking breakfast voucher.
As a character, I love Alastor. If I were ever in the same room as him, I’d probably hate him. But if there’s anything relatable about that Geneva Convention Violation on Legs it’s his absolutely done attitude in Episode 1’s opening commercial.
Charlie Loves Helping People, and So Do We!
Alright, I’ve complained for enough paragraphs, let’s be positive for a second. The thing that is by far the most true to life in Hazbin Hotel is how much joy Charlie gets from taking care of her guests. Like…that’s our bread and butter in the hospitality world. Well, maybe just the butter; we need that bread in the form of cold hard cash (or direct deposits, whatever works best). But as much as I will bitch and moan about the difficulties of working in a hotel, there’s nothing quite as fulfilling as a guest telling you that you made their entire trip better. The butterflies I get reading reviews where my coworkers are mentioned by name and a guest writes about how we completely turned around their bad day are an absolute delight. It just means the world knowing that you can have that kind of impact on someone, even if it’s just in the little things.
In Episode 2, when Charlie and the crew are welcoming Sir Pentious and she just starts vibrating with excitement is exactly how I feel when I get to meet a client that we’ve been working with for months and finally welcome them to our property. When they sing “It Starts With Sorry” and just get to have a moment of empathy and compassion together, it reminds me of the clients and the phone calls I take where I get to ask them about their goals and help them feel like they’re supported and heard. In the grand scheme of things, is a nice phone call or interaction with some hotel employee going to change your life? Probably not. But for those few moments when their burdens seem lighter is why I love my job.
This goes for guests, and for my fellow coworkers. I’ve been very blessed to start my hospitality career in an unusually supportive work culture. Yeah, we can be some right petty bitches sometimes, but overall everyone is so encouraging and so quick to help lighten each other’s loads. Like in Episode 5 (best episode btw, for obvious reasons) when all the Hazbin Crew are working together to prepare the hotel for Lucifer’s arrival, that shit made me so giddy cause like- that’s us! Look at us go! We workin together so hard, we’re so cute! Like when Niffty and Pentious are baking and she looks up at him all excited n’ shit—that’s literally been me working with our Director of Restaurants on new food menus or promotional material.
There’s something about being in an occupation where your whole purpose is to take care of people that really brings out the selflessness in you, and I think that’s what makes the hotel such a great setting for Charlie’s mission of redemption. I didn’t realize that until writing this paragraph tbh, but yeah, it just kinda…works. When your job is to make sure other people have a good time and feel supported and you’re surrounded by people that make you feel the same way, it’s a lot easier to want to choose to do good, to do right by the people around you. So as much as I have some silly little nitpicks…yeah, I can admit—I love that this show is about the Hazbin Hotel specifically.
Anyways, if you made it this far, thanks for reading! Next update for Life is In Redemption will be out in the days to come, just thought this would be a fun addition while I work on some of the content with my friends. This upcoming chapter is going to have a co-author, so get hyyyyyped :)

are u okay vic? sending love xx
(hateful ppl only have hate in their sad lives and try to bring everyone else down to their depressing level, don’t listen them!!)
frankly, anon? no, i am not.
and if you think about it, it's incredibly stupid to be all torn up because of a fucking sport I watch for general enjoyment but what else is new? i got into f1 when life hit the absolute possible low for me and it helped me immensely through it all, still does, and i found so many friends and wonderful people and i started writing again. it's pure fucking escapism coming back to bite me in the ass.
it hasn't been great to be an f1 fan lately because of events I don't need to be recapping - it's all out there in its disgusting glory, all over social media every single day. we're just being reminded of how rotten the core of this sport is and how high of a role money and power play. it's not new but disappointing nevertheless, considering there isn't much we can do to try and fix that.
but the hate among us, the fans? it's getting out of hand.
i will never go out on my way to police anyone's behaviour (it is never justified) but clearly there is a line between haha jokes and pure fucking malice. there is having genuine, critical conversations you can have (recently had one with my close friend and it was so refreshing to talk instead of secretly talk shit) and using this sport as a yardstick to measure someone's morals. it's been happening more and more, considering recent comments made by drivers in regards to the ongoing case that deals with harassment. that opened a can of worms that made ALL of us unhappy and even more disappointed, in one way of another. there is expressing genuine opinion and then there is being a hater because it's a trend.
are all Charles fans insane? are all Daniel fans delusional misogynists? are all Lando fans insufferable pricks? are all Max fans outright racists? are all Lewis fans stuck up? I could go on and same sentiment goes for each team on the grid. can we rightfully define someone by who they are a fan of? are we all required to make a statement each time a driver says/does something mindnumbingly stupid in order to, god forbid, not get cancelled along with that driver? can we genuinely bring a driver up without shitting on the other or is it not mutually exclusive?
there has been a barrage of hate towards several drivers and i get it, i do, it's sports, we're always gonna get like this. it's the whole spirit of it. i am not saying we can't root for someone and talk shit about the other. but again, i am seeing the waves of hate getting bigger and bolder, assumptions being made on the spot. people openly calling each other stupid over being fans or having a different opinion. in some ways any sense of compassion and critical thinking is dead in a ditch.
it wasn't like this before, if i am honest, but i am also a rather new fan. i am seeing all sorts of stuff on my dash both from people i don't know and from people i do know. it's a knee jerk reaction, to go and judge someone by posts and stuff, i know it but i made myself not do that. but i am just afraid of this ongoing trend of hate. i really am.
it just seems like there is no margin for error. your fave can either be squeaky clean, completely unproblematic, or they should be shot on sight. it doesn't matter if any of us acknowledge it or not. for some reason, it's a "you are what you eat" situation. and i find it rather unfair. you can separate person and a driver. two things can be true at once etc etc. none of it warrants wishing actual harm on other people.
so yeah, sorry for a rant. i'll stop now and, for what it's worth, i have been trying to unlearn the ways of "people pleasing", so here are just my thoughts that i don't think many will agree with but i don't want to bend under whatever popular opinions circulate here (especially by "big blogs"). i'd rather have people talk to me personally and i am always open to having a conversation, making friends and discussing opinions. those at the head of f1 management don't seem to do better but us tearing each other apart can also mean that we aren't doing any better, too. at least i personally think so. don't take my word as a generalized opinion.
thank you for the message, anon, i appreciate it. sorry again to be Like That. big hug!

So... Can we talk about Zheng Yi Sao please?
I absolutely adored her and she was so much fun (and love the polycule) but I am absolutely failing to see what her role in the larger narrative was.
She unites the pirates only for everyone to get blown and the pirate republic destroyed in one stroke? Because the woman who conquered China is stupid enough to trust a"gifts" British Navy minor prince whom she is blackmailing?
She is basically Stede's more competent side kick for the rest of the episode?
Another one I'm sure will be a controversial opinion! I'd love to hear what y'all think, don't be afraid to leave a comment below.
Funnily enough, my 2 remaining asks are both wanting to discuss Zheng Yi Sao (and to a lesser extent, Archie) as how both of these characters were meant to impact this story and/or failed to do so! Given that the writers looked at the limited amount of time they had and decided to write BRAND NEW characters instead of further developing the people we already liked.
I will be combining the asks, as the other person was anonymous but they spoke more to how Archie and Zheng didn't add much that was new to the story. If that anon would like me to still post their thoughts, let me know!!
First: Archie
I hate to say it, but for the most part, she feels like the response to the common criticism that S1 didn't have any leading women.
Which, yes. Is absolutely valid. This is where I feel we can sit with Archie. She's fun, and hot, and has the same Violent energy Jim had in S1. But by the time episode 8 rolls around, what is she? We know almost nothing about her, to this day. She was in a snake cult...um. She can fight, and is Jim's arm candy? Beyond that, it feels a bit hollow. Especially as Archie enters a relationship with Jim before we as the audience know Jim and Olu are in an open relationship. Yes. Jim thought Olu was dead, but I didn't really like Jim joking about Archie's tits when bringing up the fact they were dating Archie as well now.
NOW-
Onto Zheng Yi Sao! (and to a lesser extent Auntie)
Zheng had 2 rolls to fill this season, character and narriative. Her character roll was-
1.) To be an Ed mirror. She's a badass with a record, a Navy at her back, and yet we can't make her a badass without giving her the same romantic arc as Edward fucking Teach. Seriously. I was bored watching her scenes as soon as it was obvious Olu liked her. Because I could put the pieces together.
Auntie is Izzy trying to hold the legend together, Oluwande is Stede a stranger to this brand of piracy, and Zheng is Ed 1-1 from S1ep4. Congrats welcome back to Season 1, but this time faster, and with a more interesting side interrupting it every other scene.
Zheng is open to new experiences, letting herself be soft, when it comes to her new boy toy. Cool. We're repeating story beats, which I don't love... But then she gets defeated by Olu distracting her and leaving her behind mirroring Ed in ep 10. Stede and Ed's romance is condensed into 3 ish episodes. When we see her again, her arc isn't focused on her conquering the sea. Not really. It's more on how she really misses Olu. For a badass pirate we enjoy watching, I cared more about her slipping into good graces with the pirates of the Republic than her missing her 'quiet part of the day'.
The story also felt a need to parallel the mentor relationship of Zheng and Auntie, with Ed and Izzy. A thing that for the most part I don't agree with. Zheng respects and mourns Auntie in a way Ed doesn't to Izzy. Rewatch S1, does Izzy EVER change Ed's mind? Or does Ed talk down to him like he's a pesky mosquito in his ear. Ignoring him and trying to show off to Stede.
Zheng's personal arc repeats that of a character we had a lot more time with. I wish they just stuck to the cool strategy shit with her. Ironically she's a strong character because she can fight and because she cares about Olu. Which...ew. Just make her a threat, y'all. That's all you had to do.
BUT I FELL IN LOVE WITH HER IN EPISODE 7/8. OMG.
I went from being all right with her and Olu's story to seeing her as her own person. Someone who is very overwhelmed and competent. I also love her actress, so that always helps. It just sucks that she starts to have her own things going on at the very end of the story. Again, we get the Ed parallel of her throwing herself into a suicide mission after Auntie dies, but it doesn't FEEL like a direct mirror the way the romance obviously was.
She was always going to be a plot device, just like everyone else this season because-
2.) She's the reason Stede goes from being stranded on land back on the Revenge. This is the OVERALL reason she was needed here. I wish they handled this differently. I've seen some say the reason she didn't see Ricky as a threat is because the 'point' of Ricky was that you shouldn't underestimate people. But given how she treated Stede's crew like criminals awaiting trial (besides Olu), I fail to see how she would 'underestimate' the people whose claim she was trying to take over. All the characters of this season exist to push the plot forward, even if it doesn't align with how they should behave.
Given that yes. England had a STRONG foothold in the colony of a colony called 'Carolina' at this time(Florida and Georgia were held by the Spanish until the Spanish-American war), the English Navy specifically could send enough troops to push her out in around 2 months. Or hell. Maybe they'd team up with the Spanish and finally clear out the republic.
Zheng needed all the pirates in the area to match the power of their army, and at this point, she didn't have that yet. So why was she so cocky? (Oh. This show ignores history, right.)
[Fanfic concept of an alternate story for this season where Zheng isn't just another love interest that wasn't properly built up]
Personally, if I knew my budget was slashed, I'd save money by cutting unnecessary sets and using the actors I have VERY wisely. So. REWRITE TIME. In episode 1 Stede struggles to make ends meet. ACTUALLY struggling not comedic struggling. Working all hours of the day, not seeing an end in sight, the crew not wanting to go back and find Ed. Hell, some of the crew threatened to leave and get on new ships. The works. Then suddenly he is given a deal from Auntie. She knows who Stede is, and wants to bargain. He'll get a small ship, in return for his future loyalty, and potentially that of Blackbeard. Hint that this was all from the 'Pirate Queen', and BAM. No need to have the entire plot on Zheng's ship, a plot that dragged compared to that on the Traumatized Revenge, and it gives the audience something to get excited about!!
Who is this pirate queen? What will this 'loyalty' mean for the next few episodes? Etc. Maybe find Lucius early in Ep 1 at the Republic recovering, having recently been left for dead by his nearest pirate ship. This way we have another thing Stede is keeping secret from the crew and Ed, and show how Stede would react in this situation. PLUS! Epic badass Zheng slowly being hinted at taking over the Republic from episodes 6-7 before she's foiled at the end of episode 8? Yes, this gets rid of us DIRECTLY SEEING that she was betrayed by Ricky, but instead of focusing on Zheng, focus on Stede and Ricky's dynamic in ep 1. Make us see how slimy he is. Then in ep 7 show Ricky making a deal on a ship we've never seen. Think Ed in ep 3 S1, dark, smoky, and when he enters the office? ZHENG YI SAO! Badass pirate trying to expand her grasp across the ocean to fuck over the worlds militaries.
THAT is a pirate threat. Not like Jack and his story of a mutiny, or Anne and Mary of however they left the life. Or Ned whose crew was a singly conversation of Mutiny. Pirates are clever bastards who aren't to be fucked with. Zheng is new, and a different way to control the area than we're used to. Then, we the audience can see JUST how fucked over Zheng will be. Zheng goes to land and still wipes up Stede's crew thanks to legend, and maybe a betrayal after finding out about the deal. Ep 7 bar fight, leading into episode 8. Hell, maybe have her and Olu flirt. This way the audience already knows Jim's alright with it AND we get to see more wingman Jim. Which was already a DELIGHT.
My big issue with Both Zheng and Archie's romances is that their Olu and Jim didn't feel like our Olu and Jim. Oluwande S1 was nervous, clever, and good with people. Very protective of Jim, I always got the opinion that if shit ever started to look bad, he'd do everything he could for him and Jim to flee. Jim was a hard egg to crack, but sarcastic and closed off even when you got to know them. Which they RARELY did.
In S2, Jim and Olu almost feel like the same goofy characters. The twist is that they still love each other and love someone else. Which is cool, just an odd choice. Given that their reunion felt...dull. But it's obvious the writers will only develop a character if they are in a romance. (Lucius and Pete? Let's talk about trauma and recovery. Olu and Zheng? Let's discuss kindness and softness? Jim and Archie? Loyalty and compassion built by blood.) That's all they had time for, and honestly, I'd rather deepen what we know about characters like Frenchie and Wee John than see another shallow romance. Lucius and Pete worked better because, AGAIN, they were ALREADY ESTABLISHED.
Much like how the rest of this season is too fond of callbacks, Zheng's entire character can be summarized by 'diet Ed' and I hope the fandom sees her harsh, willing-to-do-anything to get the job done, attitude and expands on THAT versus a carbon copy of the main show's romance. Her roll was to get closure with Auntie in a way that Ed couldn't with Izzy. Which...yikes.
tldr: good characters, but were sadly thrown away without much development.

OK that last post got me thinking and I think I realised why autistic Rick means so much to me:
It’s about the agency and the way he’s genuinely treated as a person rather than a human embodiment of autism
(More under the cut because this accidentally turned out very long)
Like a lot of characters who are specifically designed to be autistic or autistic-coded very much revolve around this, like they’re seen as autistic first and human second? And also another big thing that I hate about this is the way autism (and other disabilities, although I don’t think I’m really qualified to talk about them) is either infantilised or demonised, sometimes both at once. The infantilisation tends to fall into two main groups.
The first is sort of ‘oh autistic people are so good/honest/much better than us’, not in a way of ‘studies have shown that autistic people typically stick more firmly to their moral code than non-autistics’, but in a way that almost takes away our agency by suggesting that autism makes us incapable of understanding morality or the big picture, and so is suggesting that anything we do right is not a credit to us or our own choices, but simply because autistic people aren’t capable of being evil.
The other, that tends to come along with demonisation, is the idea that autism/autistic people are evil/cause suffering to those around us, but acts like this is again simply due to the autism, and doesn’t give us any control over whether we harm others or not. Even though this is obviously much harsher than the other view (e.g. parents insisting that autism is ‘taking their child’/‘destroying their family’ and acting like autism is a kind of demon possessing their child rather than an aspect of who their child is), I would argue that it still falls under infantilisation, since it treats us as if we are not responsible for this, since this is simply something intrinsically linked with autism. Maybe a better example of this might be autistic people violating clearly stated boundaries (e.g. don’t touch me) but being treated as if their autism makes them immune to criticism/unable to understand what they’ve done/unable to modify their behaviour.
So getting back to the subject of the post: autistic Rick. Rick being a morally grey character is very important for autistic representation because it helps to avoid falling into either of these two camps and most importantly, gives him agency/responsibility. He’s a grown man, and is a pretty toxic guy who’s done a lot of fucked up shit, which means he definitely isn’t going to get treated as someone inherently good/better than everyone (with the exception of some fans idolising him). However, he’s clearly shown to understand his actions, as well as right and wrong, and is making a definite choice to behave in these ways, and although his reasons for these behaviours is demonstrated, I would argue that mostly the show doesn’t allow this to justify his behaviour. I think him being older and initially having a dominant/head of household type of role also helps with this, since it’s much harder to infantilise a man who makes decisions for others and is shown to be competent in a lot of scenarios others aren’t experienced with.
Overall, I think this complexity of character is something that’s handled quite well, since generally I think the show does a good job of sympathising with characters while also criticising/pointing out their toxic behaviour, as well as giving characters moments to stand up for themselves and show their agency (e.g. The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy does a good job of exploring how Jerry is both justified in his feelings towards Rick and also simultaneously pointing out his manipulative tactics). I also think that, in general, Justin Roiland does a good job of ‘normalising’ marginalised identities and treating characters as people first, while not dismissing or ignoring the impact these have on the characters (e.g. Rick’s autism and pansexuality, as well as Terry and Korvo’s bisexuality in Solar Opposites, which gets an honourable mention here since I think it’s genuinely one of the best examples of this balance for bisexual/queer characters in media, and I also think shows a lot of Justin’s growth as a writer).

Gina Carano Sues Disney and Lucasfilm. According to Just Some Guy at 1 : 36 of the youtube video. Gina Carano was the one who put gasoline into the fire herself by intentionally starting a fight with trans people and mocking them for their importance in society.
I was sick the day the happened and @jennadknowsbest-blog was kind enough to tell me and boy let me tell you, despite feeling like crap I was laughing like this allllllll day
Tumblr media
If you too need a good laugh, read the released document thingy. It's badly written on so many levels. (I saw it on Reddit but I think it's floating around Tumblr too. There are some golden comments on both.) Both from just a writing style perspective (it's written like a teenager's Star Wars fanfic) and the fact that her main argument is that "Pedro Pascal said mean things about conservatives and wasn't punished" when 1. most of the posts were apparently before he was hired as the Mandalorian and 2. it seems like pretty common knowledge in fandom that he was asked to tone it down and he did. I follow him on Insta and he rarely posts outside of promoting his own work, and it's largely "support this cause" or "I love my trans sister" instead of attacking/joking at anyone. (I guess his Twitter had more comments, but he's since deleted it afaik.) Overall, it's likely just a stunt to get the right-wing frothing at the mouth and Gina's name back in people's mouth, because she hasn't filmed anything since Terror on the Prairie (one of two Daily Wire films she was supposed to have, the other appears to not be happening anymore) and My Son Hunter (which was straight Breitbart propaganda). Shatpiro has used and dumped her and while I doubt she's hurting for money, I bet she's desperate to get the praise and attention and adoration that the Cara Dune role briefly brought her. Why else would she come crawling back to a company she's publicly trashed and accused of mistreating for the last several years? It doesn't make sense by her own logic! If they were so bad, why does she want back? (And who's gonna hire her now if they think she's a liability who's going to turn around and sue them?)
It's really disgusting though that Gina wants to claim she was discriminated against for being a woman while actively mocking minority groups. Her post appeared on my Insta fyp and I usually don't click because I know she's gonna piss me off, and I clicked and she did. At the time she had a story that said "Still beeping, bopping, booping" with a smirky picture of her. So all she's been told - we know Pedro talked to her because she herself admitted it on Twitter*, and while I'm sure there were plenty of people jumping on the hate bandwagon, there were also people trying to genuinely explain - and explained how this is hurtful to the queer community, she still keeps doing it and thinks it's funny.
That's what's unforgivable to me. Not that she said ignorant shit in the first place - we all have - but her refusal to learn and do better. She wants to say whatever she wants without pushback and so do her fans. The few times I've thought it's worth it to try and talk to someone about it, they always insist it's just her opinion and say something homophobic to me as well (last time I talked to a Cara Dune content creator on Insta, she said she "doesn't agree" with me being gay and "I can't expect everyone to agree with me." For wanting to exist as a gay person. Apparently I should just take it when people mock me or say I should burn in hell.) That's the problem with Gina and her supporters. They don't care, they don't want to think critically or debate, they want to say anything they want without consequence and brush off any conflict with "well it's just a joke" or "it's just her opinion."
Bigotry is not an opinion. You can't "not agree" with someone's skin color and it's the same with their sexuality. You don't get a fucking opinion on whether I have the right to exist as a queer woman.
Let's not pretend the things Gina says are in a void. People who flock to her believe the same things she does. That's why people have protested her attending FanExpo (this video goes into more depth thank you @jennadknowsbest-blog for sharing), when you invite people who, like her, think it's funny to mock anyone like them, it doesn't make a safe or welcoming environment for people like me. Sure one can brush off a comment or two - but where do you draw the line? When does it become harassment? And who is going to protect people like me from that harassment? How can I count on security from an organization that invited Gina and encouraged these people in the first place?
And I say all this as a queer woman who is able to chameleon myself very well because I've done it since childhood. Things are only getting more dangerous for people who are visibly queer. A nonbinary teen was just killed in Oklahoma. I live in a relatively blue area of a blue state, but that doesn't mean I'm completely safe. There are extremists out there, and they're only getting more bold - because people like Gina think it's amusing to fan the flames. Gina, at least, has faced some consequences for it. I doubt this lawsuit will go anywhere (either it'll be settled and Elon and Gina have some Own The Libs content, or they'll be dismissed/lose and they'll get some A Woke Judge Discriminated Against Me content). Gina will be happily on her way. Meanwhile, I get to wonder if the people around me who dismissively say "it's just her opinion" are the kind of people who don't think much about social issues.... or are the kind of people who will happily vote my rights away in the next election.
I assure you, if you have friends who are queer, they are listening to what you say about this case. Throughout all her tomfoolery, I've found Gina to be an excellent canary in the coal mine when it comes to identifying homophobes.
-
*She apparently later told Tucker Carlson that no one bothered to explain the pronouns thing to her, so we know she's a liar who twists the story as well, which is why I never take anything she says in good faith.**
**I'm very embarrassed I know this but I can't help but following up on stupid things she's doing. She fascinates me. She's like the inverse of a blorbo to me, like she pisses me off but she compels me. How can one person be this dumb. (Fr tho has anyone in her life talked to her about CTE??? Impulsiveness/aggression are possible symptoms....)

hi !! I was wondering if you have any dnd characters you wanna talk about :) (in response to ur tags on my post)
ARE YOU KIDDING ME, OF COURSE I DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is going under the cut because I talk too much!
So, the love of my fucking life is my swashbuckler rogue, Rook. (art of him here and here.) He has a very, very fucked up backstory, which I talked about here. (mind the tws on that post.)
I posted several snippets of the prose version I did of my favorite session I've ever played with him here. (again, mind the tws.) (I will gladly share the link to that entire doc if anyone wants to read it, as I'm very proud of it.)
But to be brief, he's the bastard son of a nobleman who's father hated him. He ran away from home as a teen, booked it to the nearest port town, and joined the crew of a pirate ship, captained by a woman named Zara. She was his mentor for YEARS and taught him everything. She also gifted him his magic rapier.
He got named first mate, which some people took issue with since he was one of the youngest crew members. They betrayed him and kidnapped him, giving him to rival pirate captain Kora Wolf, who kept him prisoner for two years before he was able to escape.
He ran away and entered the Feywild and was hiding there for several months before he was recruited by the party.
Currently, my poor man is having a terrible time. Two of the his party members are close with Captain Wolf, and one of them bought her lies about Rook, and now doesn't trust him. On top of this, he's been cursed by a demon lord, which is currently affecting him by not letting him sleep, partly due to terrible nightmares.
He's a super interesting character because on one hand he's very paranoid and mistrusting (especially now with his lack of sleep), but he also has never been shown much kindness in life, and it doesn't take all that much for him to be willing to die for you. He's incredibly reckless and will dive into dangerous situations without a second's thought, especially to save his friends. He joined a pirate crew because he was terrified of getting stuck in one boring place, and that says a lot about him. He idolizes Zara, and I have NO IDEA how he'll react when he meets her again, since he never got to say goodbye and has changed so much in the nearly 3 years since he saw her. Our party's gunslinger lowkey adopted him, and after the scene I linked above, he told someone "I missed having someone to take care of." which almost broke me.
As you can tell, I'm obsessed with this man, and I love making his life miserable. But don't worry, he'll get his happy ending. I have plans for an Inigo Montoya-style revenge duel between him and Wolf, and it's gonna be great.
My other current character is Cyra (she/they), a fire genasi barbarian/fighter. She was raised by a cult-like warband following the destruction of her hometown as a child. Later, she ended up falling in "love" with the daughter of the leader, and having a very toxic, fucked-up relationship with her. She eventually realized how bad her situation was, and realized there was no saving her gf or changing her mind, so she ran off, stealing a sand skiff as she left. They're currently becoming buddies with our party rogue, which was completely unexpected to all of us, players and characters. Last session we left off mid-combat with undead pirates in attempts to get some cursed treasure. Oh, and they have a flaming metal quarterstaff that they can summon by pulling it out of their chest. Which a major villain (who happens to be the rogue's ex-wife) wants so badly she tried to rip it out of Cyra's chest...
As for other characters, I have some very, very fun concepts for a few, including:
Zenara (they/them): tiefling warlock who was an accidental mix of a bunch of character from Critical Role Campaign 2. Occasionally gets possessed by their patron and wakes up with no memories of the shit they've done.
Avra: shadar-kai/reborn assassin who should be dead, but woke up somehow "alive" again after a mission gone wrong.
Morana: character for a future pathfinder game that will happen someday. Autistic necromancer witch with a raven familiar. Creepy as hell and very morbid. No empathy and very practical, to a degree that other people occasionally find disconcerting. Exiled from her hometown for graverobbing and necromancy. Apprenticed under a guy who turned himself into a lich.
I have literally over 30 other character concepts, but most of them are not well-developed, and this post is already WAY too long.
Now, PLEASE, TELL ME EVERYTHING. I wanna hear about your characters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how long have you been playing? what's your favorite class? Tell me all about your fucked up little guys!!!

frustrated because i want to get educated on feminist theory but idk where to start, especially since there’s so much flawed feminism out there (god, you’re saying i have to read it all and form my own opinion? but that’s so much work! just tell me what One feminist work i should read to know everything) but it’s so important because i’m becoming increasingly convinced that our deemphasis on theory is killing feminism.
we’re losing her. we’re doing vibes-based feminism we’re doing “whatever personal opinions i bring to the table without thinking about them are my political views” feminism we’re doing “it’s easy! if you don’t hate women and want them to die you’re a feminist!” feminism we’re doing VANITY feminism we’re doing “common sense” feminism (just a rephrase of “whatever personal opinions…” feminism) and we’re shocked that we’re losing. a political movement & ideology* that has NO thought behind it, JUST vibes. no pillars, no standards. what even is a feminist? when do you ever hear that articulated? unless, again, you’re hearing “a feminist is somebody who believes women are people :)” that’s exactly the problem i’m talking about.
this is why we’re losing ground to “criticizing beauty standards is antifeminist because it feels good to be pretty” feminism we’re losing ground to “you know what group has had it too good for too long? the transgender woman” feminism we’re losing ground to “feminism is for women AND men and the more we include men the more feminist it is” feminism.
frankly the way the transphobic feminism gains followers is it’s the only fucking side that actually gives somebody ARGUMENTS to latch on to. people are alienated by toothless no thoughts feminism and they’re going to people who are offering them some thoughts, and a bad argument beats the shit out of no argument at all. it’s like if you showed up to court with no lawyer? and you were like “everybody knows i’m right, morally. it’s common sense. the strength of that will protect me :)” you are going to prison. we could be doing transfeminist theory we could be explaining the role of gender in society and how it’s constructed and how women both cis & trans are constructed as women but instead we’re saying “i don’t hate trans women because i’m normal :)” that’s nothing!!! am i making myself clear do you see what i’m talking about!
and then the other two things i complained about, the “feminism is anything that makes me feel good, as a woman” and “feminism is for men, actually” are just because when we have zero standards for feminism it can mean anything at all. we could be talking about these things but we aren’t.
i don’t know how to fix this (i could learn more, but what then? well i guess id post about it for my followers. good enough, i guess. so it’s just that i don’t know how to learn more) but i am getting so frustrated with the way things are now. i know there’s people out there doing real things in the feminist space but i don’t know where to look… lot of trans women on my twitter tl talking about feminism (and yes that’s something, but i am hungry for more than twitter threads <3) and they’re fighting an uphill battle over there. like. god
* i feel like it’d be the good feminist thing to do to come down hard with “feminism is a MOVEMENT” but we do kind of need internal ideology before we can have external movement, probably. seems like people who already have feminist ideas are more likely to engage in feminist actions when the time comes. but idk i’m no political movements expert. this post is just me giving you my two cents on a specific concept

I grew up poor with my 2 siblings & my single disabled mum, we are ex-Jehovahs Witnesses (yes thats important). This has shaped a lot of my world view, I align myself with the marginalised & working class people of the world. I am heavily critical of capitalism, liberalism, nationalism & imperialism. If you have a problem with commies or anarchists, you probably won't like me. I hate fascists & I hate cops. I love my community tho & working together with anyone who wants to work toward a better world.
I am moderately able-bodied, but have mental disabilities. I don't wanna share all but I have autism, C-PTSD & chronic fatigue among many other things. I am a system, I hate syscourse.
I will tag for any trigger if you ask me, I already tag a large amount of things for both categorization & moderation.

this one might be long so i apologize but…
how do you manage to not give a fuck when you write? i’m trying to build myself up to write so i write anonymously on another person’s page (like role plays) and when they’re good, they’re GOOD but then there’s people who complain & people who say rude things about what i generate or the characters i made. i get that i shouldn’t care cause it’s my story but i guess criticism makes me nervous? well i actually don’t mind criticism but harsh criticism is like on the nose to me. i get it, you don’t like her but don’t call her a bitch. like i feel really really bad and i wish i could delete that ask and never do it anymore…i don’t even want to pick it up because of how many people are talking about it and she’s not a lowkey author either. she probably has thousands! so here are thousands of people talking shit about it, liking it, or genuinely give constructive criticism and it just makes me nervous to actually become a writer because some of these people are really rude. the person did stand up and tell people to pipe down, she’s a sweetheart but like how can i just zone all of that out and not feel like a bad writer because i feel like my work is terrible and people will hate it than love it
ooh bestie, i write for myself. i don’t ask anyone for their opinions on how i write lol. i just write, post, and then talk with y’all about it cause writing is supposed to be fun. if i liked it enough to post then the most i hope is the rest liked it too. if they didn’t oh welllll 👨‍🦯 i don’t really care much as i did when i first started writing on this blog, to me fanfiction is never that serious bc im not writing to impress people or get a publisher. im just here for the smut 🤌

my opinion on jane and jake's arcs is one i figure a lot of people would disagree with and i'm okay with that. here's what goes through my head when i think about them
1. after homestuck, hussie came out as trans
2. psycholonials has a lot of gender examination in it - with no opinion on the merit of that examination, it shows that gender+conformity are things hussie tends to explore through characters. dirk and roxy also tend to foist gender roles on their friends, while j+j ARE genderweird but totally avoid talking about it. mysterious
3. hussie watched jade get a lot of shit for being useless, and then instantly pivot into getting a lot of shit for being a mary sue. their author commentary has some serious bitterness in it about that, and i believe that they felt stifled from telling a lot of the stories they wanted to with her because people would hate her even more if she was allowed to keep being cool and happy (and what we got, to be fair, made people love jade and hate hussie, so mission success?)
4. homestuck gets so much shit for being too wordy, and besides hussie being clearly tired of writing in act 6, towards the latter half of it there are a lot of character moments that AREN'T spelled out in immense depth (i.e. jade being caught again in the same loneliness of her childhood and justifying it the same way, before davepeta tells her she deserves to just be happy; rose finally learning that the right to happiness doesn't come from earning it) with some faith in the readers to catch subtlety at the few points in time homestuck bothers being subtle. people catch these things and say "more time should have been spent on it," but should it? or are you just used to earlier homestuck's lack of brevity?
5. similarly, a lot of character arcs mirror one another, and hussie doesn't tend to tell the same story twice, so anything that had just been shown with tavros wouldn't immediately be shown again with jake. that's not a matter of honor to the characters, it's honor to the readers. readers that, again, very reasonably, hussie does not trust.
so i ultimately end up reading jane and jake less as characters on their own, necessarily, and more as unrealized transgender woes on the part of the author. the catharsis in their stories (imo) would have been better written by an author who had made more peace with themselves and had more courage to say what they were thinking and feeling. as a narrative tool, jake loses his purpose, because everything hussie might have said kinda gets said with tavros and john. and the passion at the cores of their characters seems somewhat strangled, so they end up feeling like a flop when they might otherwise not have.
i guess a lot of that sentiment, for me, comes from being a fate fan and seeing the progression over the years of how nasu writes trans characters. mordred and astolfo (while beloved) are almost incomparable to characters like caenis. and the existence of caenis lends a lot of retroactive warmth to understanding mordred and astolfo, because it becomes obvious the author really did have something good to say, and lacked a good way of saying it at the time.
so if jane and jake were real people i would agree they were slighted. but because they are not real, and exist as a method of information conveyance, i do see them as "failed," but i don't think that hussie failed the readers with them so much as having failed themselves. and, as we know, hussie is being a lot more open, so the "failure" is one being continually addressed. therefore i have no complaints questions or criticisms about these early trans characters. send post!

on ougi's mentality; spoilers
Let's talk about Ougi. I want to talk about Ougi.
Because the thing about Ougi is that they are so shrouded in mystery for most of the series, and it's because of this that it's easy to miss their interiority that they definitely do have. So I'm writing an analysis post. Yay.
The first thing you have to talk about if you want to talk about Ougi is that Ougi is a little shit. Ougi is a mean asshole who criticizes you and fucks things up for you, and everyone knows it. They know it. It is likely the first thing they knew, from the moment they were born as an oddity. Araragi wanted to be criticized, and so she wanted to criticize him-- her personality became that of someone who would be able to criticize and punish him.
This makes sense, of course. She's his oddity, she's him, of course she would be a reflection of him. But she's also herself. She has substance, according to the light novels. And her experience is different from his. I'm not going to really spend time proving this, because it just doesn't make sense thematically or otherwise for this to not be the case. Oshino Ougi is Oshino Ougi, and they all lived happily ever after.
The thing about Ougi is that they are very self-aware (and to be an oddity of self-criticism, you would have to be!). In Tsukimonogatari, she theorizes about herself, about the reason why she's alive (more on this later).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And so, being self-aware, she's aware that she's an oddity of Araragi's self-criticism. She's aware that she is here to criticize him, and him specifically. If you don't know who she is yet, this seems like foreshadowing for her being the Darkness, but in reality she's only vaguely acting in that role because he wants someone to.
It's not that she doesn't genuinely think the things she does. She does want to make things proper, she is an asshole-- but she also knows exactly why. I'm going somewhere with this, trust me.
"Even if I wasn't able to make your youth better, I was able to make it more right," she says as she's about to die. This was the purpose she was born with, a purpose that she wanted to fulfill, but still the reason for her existence. She was born to fill a certain role, and fill it she did. "Even if" she couldn't make his youth "better." "Even if?" Was making his youth better something she wanted to do? Is it something she would have liked to have been able to do?
The thing that it is certain Ougi wants to do is to fulfill her purpose. The reason she was born: she wants to carry out her criticism of Araragi, make his youth "more right." She cares about this purpose very much, and tells us as much in the light novels. In the anime, she says once she's done this, she wouldn't mind dying. Everything she does is predicated on what Araragi does, everything she does is about him, for him, to the point where she neglects her own basic needs, like having a home, which she looks back on with regret later in Zoku and--
Wait, hold on.
There's something familiar about this.
HEY, WAIT A SECOND! THAT'S JUST THE THING THAT ARARAGI DOES! HE DISREGARDS AND KILLS HIMSELF FOR THE SAKE OF OTHERS ALL THE TIME!
You guys. Could it be that... Ougi and Araragi..... are actually (originally, at least) the same person?! And therefore struggle with similar problems!?!!? (Yes.)
The thing about Ougi is that she does not exactly have the highest opinion of herself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
she says with a smile.
Because she was born to be mean, and an asshole, and to hurt. That's why she exists. That's her true identity. Something made of all the rotten bits of Araragi scraped from him, all his self-hatred, his guilt complex, his regrets, all the bad things. Unsightly; ugly. An awful mean malicious little monster.
She was born to be terrible, and terrible she is. She plays the role of Araragi's corrector, and his enemy. Hating yourself isn't good. Thinking you need to be punished isn't good. Those are things you need to overcome, like a final boss. She is those things, she plays the role of bad guy because she was born to.
Tumblr media
This is what she says in response to Araragi choosing not to save her life. It's the correct answer, it's the right thing. She's the bad guy, she's the reason why all the bad things are happening, he should "beat" her and move on with his life.
But...
Tumblr media
she still doesn't want to die.
She asks him to save her, a few times. Before he summons the Darkness, she does what she describes as "begging for her life," although she does it in her regular chipper attitude. In the light novels, she tells him she looks collected, but she's trembling on the inside. She doesn't want to die.
...but she still thinks she should. She thinks it's "right" for her to die, because she's so terrible, because she only knows how to cause problems. What she thinks "should" happen and what she wants are two very distinct separations. And she prioritizes the former rather than the latter. Even as she begs not to be killed, she doesn't really put up much of a fight. She willingly goes to the place where she knows she's going to die. Basically, she thinks she's terrible and tries to kill herself. This isn't really subtext, it's just text. She herself calls it suicide, because it is.
It's to the point where even after he does save her, she has trouble accepting it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I mean, it makes sense. She's an oddity of self-criticism. It's kind of her whole thing. Of course that would extend to herself. And after you are explicitly born (I cannot stress this enough. Ougi's existence was for one specific purpose, and they know it very well) to suck and be awful and dangerous and cause problems in the name of rightness, I can see how that wouldn't really lead you to think well of yourself. In Ougi's mind, by all means, she should just die for the betterment of everyone else. What point is there in letting her live?
Tumblr media
(But she still wants to live.)
She only really seems to accept Araragi's saving of her by justifying it with some other purpose. Again, it comes back to purpose. Purpose and meaning and value. Ougi needs these things, because they were born wanting things to be proper. Because they were born with a purpose, because their value was in fulfilling that purpose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As though there's no value in "keeping her alive" if she can't "be good." As though there's only value to her existence if she's "functioning" for some meaningful cause. "Functioning," as though she's more of a tool than a person, as though her being a person doesn't even come into it.
She puts all these footnotes on her own existence. But she still wants to live. Despite everything, despite not seeing a reason for it, despite thinking she needs a reason for it, she wants to live. Oshino Ougi the person, Oshino Ougi as themself-- wants to live.
You guys, Ougi is really bad at living.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(pauses for slightly too long)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Those lines from Zoku are after she is saved, after she is told she is herself, after she becomes herself, is given her own identity. After we learn, even if we might have already suspected, that she has substance. She doesn't have to justify her own existence; she can just be. But she can't let herself. She was born with a justification for her existence, and doesn't know how to move on from that. She is, as Zoku puts it, tilting at windmills.
Obviously, this is not a very good thing. Which is why I despise the choice in the light novels to have her stuck in the school, being other people forever so much. Because it's one thing for Ougi, the character, to make that choice-- that part is consistent. She thinks she's a problematic existence that needs to be justified and limited. She doesn't know how to live in any other way, because her existence was for a purpose, and so thought she needed to keep having a purpose to justify a continued existence. But it's another thing entirely for the narrative, the series to go, "Yes, Ougi, you're right. You are bad, and bad things do not get to live freely. You do not get to be your own person, you will not be treated as such." It affirms all the stuff it would never affirm about any other character, and that's why I hate it.
It's fine to go the direction of "Ougi is struggling defining their life for themself," but just like. Actually show that! Show that their thinking isn't okay or healthy! Give them people who can help them see that!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
she says, with real hurt and pain in her voice.
(How terrible it must be, to have all your efforts thrown away at the last second. To have the purpose you were fighting for be rendered meaningless in an instant. To have failed. To only be able to criticize him more even now, to think he's throwing away his life for someone terrible like that.)
But like. I don't think they're really that terrible. And even if they were, it wouldn't mean they'd need to justify living. But I guess NISIOISIN forgot about that and decided it was to the box with them! Cool.
To cap off this disorganized analysis, here's lines from Kabuki where Ougi is introduced that I got from the Wayback Machine. Teehee.
Tumblr media
A few lines later...
Tumblr media
Certainly gives her trademark wide smile another meaning.
TLDR; Ougi is very not okay and needs nice things now.

rambling from an Internet Old on fandom engagement, or a brief argument for not centering your fandom on public social media platforms:
1. when your engagement is always public, it often loses nuance. people change how they act around different audiences: this is a fact of life. different people bring out different facets of you; you might have different work and home personas; you take different roles in different social circles. when your audience could be, plausibly, Anyone On Tumblr or even Anyone On The Internet, suddenly the question "what is their perception of me?" or "how am i showing up here?" takes center stage - so you may feel the need to Stand Your Ground or boil down your stances to simple takes that leave less room for misinterpretation by some faceless rando.
... which is how you not only get rigid adherence to identities (and policing that in others) but also passive virtue/discourse signalling that can quickly turn into fandom-wide dogpiling as people are desperate to avoid criticism.
2. on social media, you have limited means of control (you're subject to the whims of whatever functionality the platform has), but you also have a greater illusion of power (you can talk to or reach anyone!). so maybe you try to control what happens to you & your content by other means. maybe you're trying to go viral. maybe you're preemptively attacking other users. maybe you try to tell people what they can/can't tag your posts as!
it's very easy to lean into the defensiveness of the fear described in #1 above. it is never possible to be beyond misinterpretation (see also: it is never possible to please everyone!), but if you beat someone else to the punch in the court of internet justice, maybe you'll be safer! /s
this can make for a miserable race to the bottom.
3. on the other hand, self-contained communities foster more mutual support. people can default to taking actions out of fear on a public platform, which is easier to project outward on the faceless masses; call it vigilance, carefulness, paranoia, whatever you want - your performance on the internet changes when it takes "could be seen by anyone" into account.
smaller spaces give folks the chance to, instead, act out of care, which is similarly harder to impart to some abstract, unspecific entity, but easier to do when you know the person. you're more likely go to bat for the sake of your community; you're more likely to trust they'll show up for you.
& being in a more consistent environment gives you the chance to assume good faith in other people. you can get direct positive reinforcement from them! which is amazing, in the cold void of harsh takes & unspecific hate that's easy to take personally in the public internet.
4. smaller communities enable mindful conflict resolution. bluntly, it's easier to sling shit around on a public platform, and yell at faceless people who you can feel superior to, without thinking about the person behind the keyboard. it's harder to shit where you eat. you have a vested interest in working things out with people when you share a community space.
there's a whole spectrum of conflict that's good to navigate! polite disagreement is healthy, & exploring differences of opinion can help people learn! & above all, feeling okay potentially saying the "wrong" thing means feeling safer being vulnerable, and vulnerability is mandatory for deeper, longer-lasting connection.
THIS IS AN IMPORTANT FUCKING THING TO PRACTICE. life would be very grim indeed if your relationships with people didn't have room for awkwardness & growth. if it's "my way or the highway" all the time, with no in between, you're going to be walking a lonely fucking road.
---
(for that matter, on the subject of nuance - here's my ironic disclaimer out of awareness that this is posted publicly: all of these are generalizations. of course there are black-or-white circumstances where something shouldn't be debated or negotiated.
this isn't about that. this, my friends, was prompted by fandom "discourse", or as we called it back in the day, fandom wank.
because that's what it is: masturbatory shit-slinging masquerading under an academic theory term.)
i didn't feel the urge to look into a fandom until over a decade later (thank you TLT brainrot), this summer. by this point, Discord servers had become more common, and are a format that works with my brain: enclosed social spaces that have more individual community structure. so i've jumped back in. they've been amazing! a lot of those folks are on Tumblr, so i'm starting to wade back in here, too.
some self-indulgent backstory:
i fell out of fandom culture in the early 2010s when fandoms did an almost wholesale shift from LiveJournal to Tumblr. at first, at its most basic level, it was because the format felt impersonal to me: at the time, there was much less two-way interaction. it was a slightly longer-form Twitter, where you interacted with folks by flinging things into the void and hoping someone would engage with you. but plenty of people still found the format engaging, so i chalked it up to a me problem and left it at that.
but getting filled in on the volume of TLT Fandom Drama that's managed to drive Tamsyn Muir herself, who came up through similar eras of fandom as i did, off the internet through its toxicity, made me realize that it's not just a close-knitness that got lost in the format shift from self-contained fandom communities (forums, LiveJournal, individual websites) to public, open-feed social media networks - it's a wholesale approach to respectful, healthy engagement.
(& of course there was always fandom wank & shipping wars & goofy bullshit, but it was more the exception than the rule - & it didn't zing all the way up parasocial channels to slam into the author!)
somewhere along the way, becoming a fan started to get treated as a reflection of identity politics. one of the most-repeated phrases among my friends is "thank god I got to be a dipshit on the Internet before everything was dissected & immortalized forever", because we got to learn and grow and play and enjoy ourselves - & that last bit is something some people have seriously lost sight of.
we had spaces in which to be unlovely and awkward! we got to be idiots together! it was definitely not perfect but it was forgiving, and truly, we owe it to one another to have room for soft landings in a very harsh world. fandom is often an escapist release. applying everything from the real world to it all the time is both unnecessary & unreasonable.

Disc World bookclub thoughts- Monstrous Regiment
Pages 20-28
Hey @anna-neko ! Did I miss last week… yes. BUT JUST BECAUSE I MISS ONE WEEK DOESN’T MEAN I JUST ABANDON THIS. Look, finals are the week, so these past few weeks have been alot… also I’ve been hyperfocusing on dnd(stares in adhd). I’ve barely read but that’s alright. Once finals are over, I’m going on a roadtrip, so I should have time to read when we’re driving(unless I catch up on critical role…we’ll see).
It’s so late and I’m literally way too tired for nuance. With expectations set, Lets go
“Ankh-Morpork is a godawful city,” he said. “Poisonous, just like its river. Barely fit for humans now, they let everything in—zombies, werewolves, dwarfs, vampires, trolls—“
Something something we live in a society. Cue family talking about how NYC is corrupting the youth or something 🙃. Tbh, insert any big progressive city, and it should work for most of them.
A lot of good stuff in this page(and the next few ones)
Tumblr media
1. Something Something colonialism bad. They[Borogravia] are the bad guys here🏃🏃🏃
2. Cool POV stuff coming back. Especially with the song and what not
3. Damn Strappi’s certainly something
4. I hate nationalism. The line b/w patriotism and nationalism is real hard sometimes. I mean, something something, true patriotism is knowing how your country’s fucked, and wanting to it be better. You fight for change cause you love it, and that is way more patriotic than just blinding fighting for country and defending it, even when it is in the wrong.
5. Uggh, the national anthem. Yes the flag thing is an actual thing we do in US. And certain teachers DO loss their shit if you don’t stand up/sing. Look, it’s not like I’m trying to disregard veterans, it’s just… weird and indoctrinationy. Plus, they added, “Under God,” during the cold war so, that feels even more insidious.
6. Poor Wazzer man. I’m glad he rebels in his own small way. Small acts of rebellion are still rebellious.
7. Learning new phrases! I figured due to context clues, but it’s always good to check.
Tumblr media
Literally this conversation is literally my fucking thoughts
Tumblr media
Uuuuh. War bad! Look. See!
“Well, I’m not buying into it. It’s all trickery. They keep you down and when they piss off some other country, you have to fight for them! It’s only your country when they want you to get killed!” said Tonker.”
Tonker. King Behavior!
And just as they’re going to sleep, so am I.
Fuck this book is good!
Here’s another quote good night!
It’s all lies, she thought muzzily. Some of them are just prettier than others, that’s all. People see what they think is there. Even I’m a lie. But I’m getting away with it.
Ps: I realized last time I stopped at pg 20 but wrote 60… my bad.(should be fixed now tho)
I will add ID text some other date cause I don't have the mental energy rn. I just did, scan text, and copy pasted it into alt w/out checking. If someone besides Anna finds this post and wants them, just @ me in the comment and I'll @ you when I finish this.

Okay, I've seen this discourse going around on my dash because a few of my mutuals have expressed their takes. At first I was going to just. Side eye. And leave it at that. But I actually wanna talk about it real quick.
It doesn’t really matter if Cartman is the star of the show or if he’s the show’s backbone, people are not crazy lunatics for disliking him. A character’s role in a show shouldn’t have to be what dictates whether or not it’s okay for the fandom to hate them. That’s just silly. Let’s use the Winx Club, for example. I’ve seen people say that they hate Bloom, the main character in the show. Without Bloom, there would be no Winx Club. I was shocked by this at first because, hey! She’s Bloom! But it didn’t really hurt me or upset me because, while I personally like Bloom, I’m aware that there are people out there who don’t. That’s fine, preferences exist. I’ll live, and so will they.
Another really popular example that I’ve seen lately is Marinette from Miraculous Ladybug. This one did kinda hurt me a little, only because I really liked her and even saw bits and pieces of herself in me. The most recent ML season, from what I’ve seen and heard, has pretty much Mary Sue’d her in terms of accountability and clumsiness. Hey, shit happens. Although it’s sad that the fandom no longer likes my favorite character, I’m not going to wiggle my finger at whoever posts about how they’re disappointed that Marinette’s character has changed so drastically, and I’m especially not going to justify my finger-wiggling by saying that she’s the Star of the Show and therefore void of criticism. Or just. Immune to the fandom not liking her ass.
I’ve met people who even hate Spongebob. Spongebob Motherfucking Squarepants. Without him, there would be no show! But even then, it’s valid if the little guy annoys you.
All of this can be said about Cartman. I’m personally one of the ones who just flat out doesn’t care about him. I generally don’t feel the need to, like, analyze his character and look into why he does what he does. Not because I won’t benefit from it, I most likely will, but because I simply don’t want to. Drinking a tall glass of lemonade would be more refreshing than studying whatever the hell Cartman has got going on, I’ll tell ya that right now.
So yeah, people can dislike Cartman for whatever reason they feel. One of the most popular reasons being that he’s a shitty person. While I’d argue that this is par for the course considering the overall offensive rhetoric a show like South Park seems to present, you have to admit that the guy can take shit to another level. Also, I hate it when people fire back against that argument by saying “Well, all of the other characters are shitty human beings too!” because, yeah, you’re absolutely right, but I don’t recall Stan starting a Nazi Revolution in honor of one of the most evil human beings of all mankind. I don’t recall Kenny killing an innocent man and forcing a boy to eat Chili made out of his own cooked flesh. It doesn’t matter how you slice it, none of these characters hold a single candle to the amount of terrible shit Cartman has said and done, most of which he doesn’t even feel sorry for.
Even with the shit that the other characters do, they’re easily forgettable moments because the moments are few and far between, a refresher to remind the audience that these characters are in no way completely innocent. With Cartman, being a piece of shit is, like, central to every episode he’s in. Like, damn bitch, almost every episode you’re on some next level shit lmao.
I’d also like to address how fatphobia has come into play here. I mean, sure, yeah, things like fatphobia can and do stand as factors for why people don’t like characters, most likely internalized rather than intentional. And not to dismiss genuine fatphobia in the fandom, because I do believe that it’s there, I truly do not believe that that is a driving factor for the fans disliking Cartman. Like, c’mon. There’s a whole bunch of other shit here, I think his weight is the least of our worries.
Also in terms of shipping I think fans don’t like to ship Cartman with anyone because of the canonical event of Cartman actually getting a girlfriend. He was a manipulative asshole, we all saw it. Even before he and Heidi got together, the way he treats his friends and family is evidence enough. Idk. I don’t think he’d be any different while being romantically involved with any other member of the cast, which is why any ship involving him is, in my opinion, questionable at best and outright anti-semetic at worst (wink wink nudge nudge)
Anyway uhhh take this post with a grain of salt lol. If you like him, great! Just, y’know, don’t shame others for not liking him just because he’s the reason why South Park has it’s fame. Doesn’t matter, ppl are allowed to not like characters.
