Do you have any more headcanons for our darling Rocky? Romantic, general or whatever. I think that whenever he sees his s/o he has stars in his eyes and that he loves boasting about them to all of Lackadaisy (much to their annoyance; Victor is that close from throwing him out the window).

Who is your favourite character btw?

This is kind of a part 3 to my previous Rocky Romantic HCs, with these focusing more on domestic living together and family stuff! Femme and masc options included.

When Rocky starts living with you, it's an adjustment. He hasn't had a permanent home-home in nearly 10 years. There's so many things he forgot about, and things he missed dearly but tried very hard not to dwell on. And he gets to see so many new things about you - you'll catch him staring more than once as you go about your routines, from shuffling through the morning to winding down in the evening. All the things you keep on your shelves, everything smelling like you, noting all your interesting habits! It's your private world he's been invited into and he's a little obsessed. The place wouldn't need to be anything fancy, either - even in an apartment, he takes in everything like it's s gift.

(You'll find all sorts of cute notes scattered about where you'll surely find them, even if it's weeks later. Drawings, poems, love notes, song lyrics - all sorts of sweet, sappy things like that. Then there's the BIG obvious ones he leaves right on your nightstand or mirror.)

Rocky wants to be useful, of course, he always does, but his domestic skills are ...well. There's room for improvement. Cleaning and keeping up with himself is one of those things he needs to pay more attention to, and while he wants to help with the cooking, uh. Maybe hold off on that until you're sure he won't get distracted in the middle of boiling water. Also, when he does cook breakfast, there's usually a huge mess left behind ... But it's the thought that counts! He'll figure out pretty much any chore you assign him, anyway. And at this point you know how much Rocky wants to please you.

When he first moved in, there was an initial period where you two slept separately. It was only proper, especially if you're femme, buuut that went out the window within a week or two. Rocky wouldn't be the one to bring it up, but he wouldn't complain a bit if you just let him stay in your bed instead of going back to the couch or guest room. (And I mean, he looks so comfy and he loves snuggling ... are you really gonna kick him out?)

Even if you both fall asleep on opposite sides of the bed, eventually the grey tabby will migrate over to you. The clinginess doesn't stop just because he's asleep! And he either sleeps like the dead, or bolts up at the slightest noise. Most mornings Rocky is up at the near crack of dawn, antsy and ready to get on with whatever idea is rattling around in his head. Snuggling might incline him to sleep in just a little longer - or maybe he'll just soak up the comfy bed, sunny morning and loved one next to him. It's a very quiet and still peace that takes some getting used to.

If you're femme - happy as he is to go on about how wonderful you are to others, he doesn't breathe a word of it to his aunt. He might actually be skinned alive if Nina catches a whiff of him "living in sin".

If you're masc, y'alls domestic life is probably closer to a "bachelor pad" than some suburban bliss, but it's still homey in it's own way. It's far more likely you're both sharing an apartment or row house close to the Little Daisy. Your laundry tends to get mixed up (which Rocky doesn't mind at all, even if you're much bigger than him), there's lots of late-night attempte to cook on the terrifyingly worn out gas stove and opening the window at night to let in a cool breeze and the sounds of the city. Other tenants don't may you two any mind, assuming you're family or two workers trying to save money by boarding together.

(Bonus points if y'all live in the same apartment block as Zib and his band, as if he doesn't have to deal with the nauseating lovebirds enough)

Being in a safe, stable place with a loved one can stir up some buried memories. You've probably seen Rocky despair dramatically already, but the actual crying is new. He's a noisy cryer, it's difficult for him to hide it. He'd even apologize if it woke you up, but Rocky is surprisingly comfortable with crying on you and being held, though there been a few times where he's initially resisted, feeling like he ought to hide these emotions instead. It's been so long since he had this kind of comfort, but there's still shame when he feels the tears came from out of "nowhere". Oh, there's a lot repressed there ...

And there's the whole ... getting a concussion and nearly dying bit. Initially Rocky is unaware of long-term effects of the concussion, and later willfully ignores them as long as he can. Sudden bright lights and loud noise cause twinges of pain that can snowball into a full blown migraine, something he's never had to deal with. And the first time he banged his head on a doorframe? Bam, flat on his ass. Rocky woke up resting on your lap, your frantic face hovering above him. He was only out for a few seconds but uh, still scary. Something he should be aware of and more careful about because he's sooo good at being careful...

(Small silver lining is you fuss and take care of him during the migraines but Rocky haaaates having to be still in bed. Good luck keeping him there!)

Regardless of gender, there's some potential friction with your family. You adore Rocky and are perfectly happy with him, but well, to your family ... If they're middle or upper class, associating with a destitute musician with bizarre behaviors was not in the plan for you (god forbid anyone finds out about the bootlegging and arson). No matter how well he cleans up, or is on his "best behavior", you could risk getting cut out from the family entirely. Note if you're masc, your relationship could simply be brushed aside as that "friend" of your's they don't approve of. A woman will be judged far more harshly, especially if you and Rocky are living together without being married. You can kiss any inheirtance or family support goodbye.

(Of course, being from a poorer family or not having one at all mitigates much of this drama.)

The fact you're willing to defy your family for him and defend him gets Rocky emotional all over again. It's probably not possible for him to be any more devoted to you, but now feelings of guilt will bubble up. On darker days he'll worry he's ruining someone's family relationships (again) and it'd be best if he just left.

Actually getting married to Rocky would amp that family drama even further, no matter how happy you are about it. It'd probably end up being one of those thrown-together elopements where you're both giddy and a little anxious and driving out to who-knows-where to find a priest who won't ask questions. There's no ring, but - hey, maybe a family heirloom was found. Maybe a friend lends a dress that's almost white, and you repurposed a fancy tablecloth for a veil, and Rocky is wearing a borrowed suit of Freckle's, and the bouquet is flowers you two found alongside the road.

It's slapped together and messy but also exciting and y'all are so happy in spite of everything. Rocky's grinning so much you think his face might get stuck; this isn't something he ever imagined for himself, but now that you're here, he just wants to love and be with you forever. Expect a few years. Maybe a lot. There could even be a little 'reception' at the Lackadaisy, with lots of dancing and music and everyone having to witness how blindlingly sappy you two are (as if they weren't painfully aware).

So. If you're AFAB, the reality is you and Rocky will have one ... or several ... scares, unless you're very diligent. Look, his pull-out game is shit because he just gets so caught up in the affection and being with you. Hell, that may be what led to the elopement in the first place, spurred on by a healthy dose of Catholic guilt and maaaaybe a family member's shotgun.

Just like the whole 'Finding the Most Wonderful Love of His Life' thing, Rocky didn't think children were anywhere in his future. If any thoughts were given to it, he might assume he'd been a poor parent, because isn't he a screw-up with anything else? What example did Rocky have, anyway - a dad who basically abandoned his family when they needed him most? He does his worrying and anxiety spiralling in private, but it'd be easy for anyone to pick up on it. Of course he thinks you'll do wonderfully, but the chaotic tabby has little hope for himself.

(If you also have no idea what you're doing, congrats! It's utter chaos. And you think anyone at Lackadaisy knows what to do? Also nope! Godspeed!!)

But the thing is, Rocky is quite good with the kitten once they start crawling and exploring. He has the energy level to keep up with them, and he naturally encourages the kiddo to explore and play more. The tot being noisy or fussy or agitated doesn't faze him much; Rocky quickly picks up when they just want attention and playtime or if something is actually upsetting them. I think he'd also sing and play music to soothe them, like his mom used to do when he was restless.

(Also the three of you going out for a picnic or playing in the park and he's just! So happy!! He really had his own tiny family that loves him. He doesn't care if the kitten claws up his back when they're startled or eat grass and immediately vomit or drop their toy into the park fountain. That's his baby!)

Also, at least one (but realistically most) of his kiddos would also have ADHD. Obviously in this time period there's no recognition or diagnosis, but it's easy to notice if his kid has similar 'odd' behaviors and mannerisms. Anywhere from the hyperactivity, to fidgeting and chattering, to sudden focus on things that interest them. I think anytime his child seems to act like him, even if it's considered "misbehavior", he just melts and can't find it in himself to scold them. Rocky would generally be the forgiving, fun and permissive parent, much as his own mother was. He'd also worry about being too absent; normally no one cared when he was gone for days (or weeks ...), but now there's a little one who can't even handle him being gone for an evening. No Rocky you can't strap the kitten to your back and take them everywhere....

Notably if the kitten was neuroatypical in a different way, or disabled - either deaf, or they struggle to walk, etc, Rocky picks up on this quickly. He'd be good about thinking up accommodations or ways for them to get about the world easier, and patient, so very patient. Making up hand signs? Jury rigging a mobility aid? Recognizing when a place might be too overwhelming for the kid? Figuring out exactly which textures are upsetting for them? It may shock people how observant he is about these things - and, given the time period, he could be seen as too "indulgent". Okay he's definitely an overly indulgent parent in other ways, but in this case, Rocky is quite fixated. He's very familiar what it's like being on the outside and disregarded.

He absolutely wants to teach his kiddo music, and likes singing to them and rattling off poetry when it comes to him. The household is full of music and art in general, especially if you're artistically inclined yourself. He'll gather all sorts of unusual books to read to them (even if they're too young for it, his voice is nice to listen to). He's the parent who keeps literally anything his kid makes him and gets happy and emotional all over again when he sees it. He's also the parent who can't deny his kiddo when they've had a bad dream or are afraid of the dark ... so either he falls asleep on the couch with them, or he carries them back to y'all's bedroom.

It goes without saying that Rocky's going to continue his criminal activities. If anything, he's been spurred on even more in order to support you and the kitten, especially if this is after 1929; the kids would be growing up during the worst of the Great Depression. This could either be a point of contention between you and Rocky, if you aren't doubling down on the crime yourself.

(Personally I HC that, if he had a family to provide for, he'd 100% stay involved with crime even after Prohibition and/or the Lackadaisy is gone. What other choices are there?)

Note if you're masc and had a kiddo from a previous relationship, a lot of these HCs still apply! Rocky would still find himself bonding with them and being delighted by how much they seem to care for him. He likes noticing the mannerisms that are just like your's, and how their faces mimic your own expressions. They'd refer to him as "uncle Rocky" but sometimes they'll slip and say "papa". Which totally doesn't make him want to cry or anything.

Hi, this is the same anon that sent you the Cardi B request a while ago. I saw what you posted yesterday and I absolutely love it and you even took it further by having them actually meet Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion on set when I originally meant that they had stumbled upon the music video on YouTube but this was so much better. Can you do another reaction from the Outworlders this time to "Anaconda" by Nicki Minaj because their reactions are just hilarious especially Medusa Reader and Syzoth because I just love those two and I keep imagining them both thinking "Why are these Earthrealmers so interested in women with enormous behinds and what kind of dancing are they doing with their behinds, is this a sort of mating ritual for them? Also why do they mentioning this anaconda when I don't see it anywhere?" and they're just constantly badgering Johnny with more questions about the song's lyrics and the rest of the Outworlders are just both astonished and disgusted by the dancing and outfit choices.

By now, you weren't too caught off guard by Earthrealm music. Of course, you and Syzoth are confused by it, but know what to expect by now.

Tanya and Li Mei barely pay those type of music or its "magic" videos anymore. They have no real interest in the strange women nor their mating rituals.

Mileena finds them amusing but it's more of a passing entertainment to her. Kitana, well she prefers not to watch the videos as she just keeps blushing whenever she watches them.

However, you and Syzoth have something of a strange fascination with them, as one would with seeing a new zoo animal or new culture. So when you and Syzoth are left waiting between filming scenes for one of Johnny Cage's projects, this one for something called "Reptiloid Ravagers," Cage leaves you and the Zateran an iPad to keep entertained.

At first, you were both content watching small fuzzy creatures getting up to mischief, until something called "Anaconda" came across your feed. You eagerly selected the video, having recognized the word Anaconda as a species of snake that you read briefly about before. However, you didn't really pay attention to the thumbnail, which you are starting to regret.

"Oh my gosh, look at her butt..."

As with "CPR" and "WAP", you and Syzoth are met with a recording of scantily dressed Earthrealm women shaking their behinds to entice their audience. This time you and Syzoth would not be left speechless or with heads full of questions. When Cage walked by you and the Zaterran, you showed him the video without hesitation.

"Cage, is this a common ritual among Earthrealm women?"

"Or is this a ritual unique to the Warm-bloods of your realm?"

"Where is the anaconda? I see no snake, only women."

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, one at a time, my scaley friends!"

Cage responded in amusement as he tried to answer both you and Syzoth's questions. All while the video of the singer kept playing.

That's when Baraka, who was also there to help with Cage's project because he owed Syzoth a HUGE favor, spotted you three squabbling like chambermaids. He approached all of you, curious about the strange item in your hands, he's only seen in passing. A device that currently showed a chorus of women shaking their behinds as music played.

"What are you three watching?"

Baraka questions. You're the first to react by snapping the Ipad in half, surprising all three men by your reaction.

"NOTHING!"

Cage is the first to recover by letting out a frustrated grunt.

"You're paying for that iPad and my Iphone!"

You merely respond by pulling your cloak's hood over your head, while shrinking under Baraka's confused gaze.

And I don't know about you but for me it's a little harder to ignore the specificity of the color arrangement of those gloves in light of his performance. But see here's the thing, he's never really hidden his bisexuality from us. Very much like other unstr8 BTS members, he has openly chosen to use inclusive pronouns in his music. He has worn many, many items - far too many to list here - in support of inclusivity, knowing well that some, even most people would see support as personal identification. He has smilingly played the court jester knowing that some people would ignore him, some would validate him, and some would use him to virtue-signal as a cover for their own dis-ease.

To ignore that is to ignore the totality of Jung Hoseok as a person and is far more disrespectful, in my own admittedly tiny corner of the internet. You do you, if it makes you feel better. welcome to an episode of Bec yells about songs (because I suck with music terminology and theory, I just love music lol)

first of all the small blirp sound at the beginning (which then comes back later) is so clearly Aleksi's trademark and he brought it to Blind Channel's other discography as well (like the Dark Side intro which then repeats later in the background). And right after that we get to Niko's heavy metal growl voice which I absolutely love and he uses it a lot in Timebomb, and we also get drowned by a wall of guitars and bass and drums even though we do get some breaks for breathing, but the heavy metal fan in me just loves this

the drop just before I’m showing off - we get so many big drops and small drops during this song I'm not even counting them, but they make the structure of the song so interesting and intense even if it's the basic ABABCA I think?? Didn't pay that much attention but anyways I love the beat in the mommy, I tried life sorry I wasn't good at it bit and how Niko sways his hips during the live performance to keep up to it <3

and like you said the lyrics are so good, especially more than just alive even if it kills me is just brilliant and beautiful and I know many BC fans who have it as a tattoo and I kinda want it too

Almost none of them can talk in any meaningful way about music since that is not why they're here, but that's fine. Music taste is subjective anyway. The few who show some depth cannot do so outside a narrow set of fields, usually related to eroticism. And then there's the critics like you Anon, who hate as a hobby and do so in as verbose a manner as you can manage because you know how painful it is taking time to read that shit.

Because all you've done in this ask is show:

You have never listened to Black music before, particularly R&B and Jazz, because how are you so unfamiliar with 'scat singing'?

You haven't actually listened to Closer, the song's lyrics you posted, because if you did you'd know it's not Joon singing those lyrics and given the singer's style, it's likely not Joon who wrote those lyrics.

And this is after your first mistake in thinking I'd care at all what anybody thinks about Namjoon or BTS's lyrics. I mean, you're telling me this like I'm supposed to give a fuck.

I have zero problem with actual critiques of BTS's lyricism. Despite myself I too occasionally cringe, but I like the guys so I deal with it.

I've seen this critique of BTS's lyricism before, and particularly about the rapline's participation. I'm entirely indifferent to this debate, if there's one.

Indigo is an almost perfect album and I mean that sincerely. The amount of soul in that album? Christ. See, one reason I love Joon is because he is such a student. That man can be dense, but when it comes to music he pays attention and it shows. Indigo is a sonic and cultural feast for me. It calls to me on such a deep level like y'all don't get it. I'm living for this blend of Korean and Black music because Joon's Indigo is the best expression of this idea in k-pop I've ever seen. Anon, you quite frankly don't deserve to ever listen to it. The soul and sass in that album will be completely wasted on you. You strike me as the sort who reads James Baldwin but would scoff at the music Baldwin loved to dance to. Which is all well and fine, but do me a favour and skip Indigo.

Soooo, Louis was looking at one fan's profile (casual) to see what came up, but oh no... he found a couple of 'Larry stuff'.

And he, totally shaken, even if it's been YEARS since he admits the existence of the "Larry Organization" and that he hasn't been associated —outside the fandom— with Harry in an 'un-professional' way for f*** thousands years, and not to mention that we know that he gives absolutely 0 fucks about whatever the fans think because "they can believe what they wanna believe"

HE DECIDE TO CORRECT the fan's beliefs, in the same way as the only direct denials we've ever had, written. Because in person it's a completely different story, with a lot of "genuinely; seriously; obviously".. right?

So, I actually listened to this song a while ago (thanks Youtube algorithm!) and meant to say something about it, but I legitimately forgot. But now I've remembered, mwaha! This song is called Be My Guest, and for the life of me I can't find out who the song artist is! (I think they might just not have a name?) So I'm linking this song at the end so y'all can find it and listen to it.

(EDIT: I think their name is Azari, whoops. I'm still linking the song tho.)

Also, I would like to add a disclaimer before I even start talking about this song, lol. I do not know any actual names to describe any of the instruments, so if it starts sounding like I'm talking about nonsense, that's why.

So. This song is so good but in a sneaky way! It doesn't come out with any loud instrumentals or emotional singing. It's quiet and soft and sneaky and I LOVE it so much! I love this song's vibe and everything! The music is really simple but eases into the background, and the vocals at first just follow the beat, which sets up a really sly, really calm sort of song that still is easy to jam to. Like you could close your eyes and just relax to this song. You'd end up dancing a little, of course, because the beats are just too immaculate and well-placed to avoid not snapping to them, but it fills the silence in a way that's fulfilling but quiet. There's something definitely there, but it doesn’t demand your full attention. You can do something else while letting this play in the background and take up the back of your thoughts. (Which was why I was going to play this while working when I'd remembered I hadn't wrritten about this song yet.)

Then it adds a lil jazziness to it with some more off-beat beats (that sound kinda like a maraca, actually)! And I love these beats! They're so good that I can almost taste them in my mouth and savor how good they are, mm! The jam levels surpass pure vibing and get me to tap my foot, it's so nice! Now the song's taken up a lil more conscious thought, just enough to realize hey, this is frickin good, but you're still just enjoying the musical silence that it has.

But it doesn’t stay that way! This song has the AUDACITY to pause, take away the new syncopated beats, and leave the end up of beat undefined and (lyrically) silent! And I UTTERLY. LOVE IT. When you're not expecting it, it's like you've been vibing ever harder as the song goes on and you expected to vibe more from the build, but then the music drops out from under you and gives a slower, more careful answer. Like someone is sneaking behind you (which fits with the lyrics)! And the suddenness plus how good the slow down is gives me shivers. I love this part! It blends into the background less, but it's so good and satisfying to vibe to! And there are random real-life sounds in there (like a car horn) that don't sound random or jarring at all! Everything sounds so smooth and well-produced and satisfying!

And then after that, the song goes back to vibing with a few more beats added and it's just... When I'm paying attention to the song, the vibing and fulfilling drop and return to vibing makes me want to cry happy tears, and when I'm not paying attention, it makes me want to wave my hands and tap the beat into anything I can find. Like it's so good that I have to let the music out somehow.

And the end! The end of the song is so slow and sly and MM so good! And the art is so beautiful, I had to say something about it! And the way this song blends the roboticness of the vocaloid's lyrics, the music, and the real-life sounds is just wonderful! This whole song just feels well-produced in a way that even someone with no experience producing music can tell! Like the song artist knows just when to push and pull back to make an awesome song!

This song is so good for working because it's so varied and interesting yet quiet and unobtrusive about it! And honestly, I love it so much that it immediately got put onto my Vocaloid playlist! I recommend it to literally anyone!!

No hate to Levihan but I wanted to call y'all out for this. Call Your Name ONLY represents Eremika and there's no way to deny that if you pay attention to the whole lyrics. Mikasa's response to it is another song : “No matter Where You Are” which has the very same melody reminding us of CYN.

Later on, many other ships appropriated it as theirs as soon as it was played when two characters have a discussion or interact or in the case of Levihan, when a plane appeared and it's a background music. I don't know about you but I don't really like it when people do that: I mean some Eremikas commented “Omgg Eremika song!!” under the Call Of Silence YouTube video when COS is definitely Yumikuri's. Like leave it to them, okayy?? It's not your ship's and that's just annoying.

So it goes just the same for Call Your Name. It's Eremika's. Not Levihan's even if a plane appeared in the clip of the piano version of it. Not Eruri's even if a piano version of CYN was played as a background music in the “Erwin & Levi: Crumbled Castle Gate” CD Drama (canon material) and Levi has an internal monologue about Erwin. Not Rivetra's even if the piano version of it too was played as Levi took her badge in the anime after her death and it hit directly at the part “I'm crying, missing my lover” as he did.

The lyrics have nothing to do with EM either as in canon Mikasa never brought Eren coffee nor did she have a brother who she lost. The melody being used for another song Mikasa sang to Eren doesn't prove it either. The lyrics are *random*.

If it's not applicable to LH because of the lyrics then it's not applicable to EM either because there is absolutely no relation to EM relationship in canon and the song lyrics.

1. fave fic is probs ‘between roommates’ bc y/n and jk are both a little slow

2. honestly it’s between jk/Tae but lately it’s been Jk more but to be fair Jungkook is the reason I even got into bts around 2017/2018 so he’s my ult and main reason I write

3. I go into writers block like mid story for every story I write lol, I’ll go through random days where I just can’t finish a fic

4. for writers block if I can’t think of anything I’ll base a fic off a book, movie, music etc. sometimes I’ll look up prompts on tumblr for ideas and then go find music that gives off the same vibe and pay attention to lyrics

5. Yes I’ve wanted to name my y/n before but I just never do it bc I want it to be inclusive to everyone even tho I write most female y/n’s. if I were to name one they’d probs have hispanic ties

6. yesss sometimes I have a whole plot for a jk fic and then halfway through brainstorming I rather write it for a Tae fic like ‘lover’s revenge ’ was supposed to be for jk but I hadn’t written one of Tae like that (TAE tends to be my more experimental character like with the eros project, rewriting love, etc.)

7. Taehyung is the one I always try to write good for bc his fics don’t do as well as jk fics and I want y’all to know I write for both 😭😭😭😭😭

8. unexpected love was def my Tae fic ‘golden boy’ bc it was my first Tae story to get as many likes as my jk fics which tend to do better

9. story that makes me want to write endlessly is probs ‘my dear friend’ bc there’s so many diff ways you can write a college au that’s both angtsy and humorous

10. ok lowkey I feel like I’m good at writing fics based off shows/movies bc they always inspire me to create my own versions but with the same ideas, especially my webtoon fic ‘rewriting love’ I honestly don’t see many fics based off webtoons and reality shows so there really isn’t that many but ‘the eros project’ was like a spin-off of heart signal and it did pretty well. so I think that’s something I can write that not a lot of ppl can or haven’t tried yet

also I’m not just a Tae/jk stan I love all 7 of BTS I just specifically write for them unless I get requested someone else or a random idea comes in for another member [kudos to those ppl who can write a handful of stories about each member you’re my role model but I’m lazy]

Hey guess who just remembered they haven't done a blog about albums in like two weeks hint it's me. See, I normally do them during downtime at work, was home from work for a week because reasons, and thus snapped myself out of the habit. So here's some rapid fire albums.

Reign In Blood by Slayer. So, I do talk about this on Tumblr occasionally but I'm Jewish. The opening song of this album made me DEEPLY uncomfortable as it's a song about Mengele. I thought the band was mining my culture's suffering for content at best, glorifying Nazis at worst. I did some googling about it to see if this was the case, and found a quote that said essentially "I didn't put any lyrics condemning Mengele's cruel experiments because if I need to TELL you they're atrocities I can't help you." And like fuck man 11/10 attitude honestly. Doesn't make me like the song as it's still a rough listen, but I respect that. Anyway, rest of the album is good. 3/5.

Either Or by Elliott Smith. This album was boring and this far out from having listened to it I cannot remember a god damn thing about it. I apparently gave it a 3/5. Moving on.

The Only Ones by The Only Ones. Similarly, don't remember a god damn thing in hindsight about this album. Also 3/5.

Let It Be by The Replacements. Same story, same rating. 3/5. This is why I try to do the blogs same day when I remember, folks. Would like to quickly clarify that these ratings aren't a "default"score, but specifically the rating I gave it the following day when I generated the next album.

Urban Hymns by The Verve. This album wasn't my thing, but I was still impressed by what they were going for. The album starts with their famous song "Bittersweet Symphony," and climbs and climbs in energy, then drops the energy off a cliff for the last few songs. It is genuinely pretty effective, makes you pay attention, and really takes you places. It's genuinely cool. I didn't really LIKE the songs much, but I respect the creative choices. Also a 3/5, but with a recommendation you listen anyway because I could see someone being inspired to make something truly fucking amazing listening to this.

Seventeen Seconds by The Cure. This one hurts y'all. I like The Cure. They're a good band. This album sucks in a way that isn't even fun to unpack. 2/5.

Technique by New Order. Okay so I only know New Order from like "Blue Monday," while is a cool but very dreary song and very much not my thing. This album punched my expectations in the face, doused them in gasoline, then tossed a match at them while they tried to get back up. It's just plain fucking fun to listen to and you should listen to it. 4/5. If you're wondering based on that statement why it's not a 5, you gotta really understand how low my expectations were on this.

World Clique by Deee Lite. This album isn't very good and "Groove Is In The Heart" is an overrated song. This feels like an opinion that might be controversial maybe but whatever. 2/5.

Play by Moby. This album starts fun and then gets progressively less fun the further you go, to the point where I was begging the album to end about three songs before it actually did, so the rating here is kind of like the average of the first half of the album and the last half. "South Side" is still a fucking jam, but the rest of it ain't gonna change your life. 3/5

Lastly, Groovin' by The Young Rascals. This album has the unfortunate distinction of having a song that played on the work radio when I worked at Walgreens (the title track), and so I automatically hate that song. Listening to it in private on my morning drive didn't make it better. But I'm also not gonna give it an auto-1 because I have unresolved emotions about my former employers. "You Better Run" is a fun song. 3/5.

Been seeing some criticism of The Wellerman, after becoming a viral tiktok success. Which is fair, now that I know the story behind the song.

Good. We should pay attention to the story behind the song. The Beatles Norwegian Wood is a super fun song to sing, and it also implies that he burned her house down after she wouldn't fuck him. For example.

Examining media for context, gods we're all getting good at this aren't we?

The Wellerman in particular comes from a folk music tradition of Worker's Songs. A lot of those songs come out of having lived in shitty conditions because of your job.

Y'all have probably seen the beautiful rendition on tiktok of The Chemical Worker's Song (link to a Great Big Sea version of it). People sing songs about horrible things that have happened to them. It's partly "I was here, trying to survive this" and partly "this is awful won't someone fix this horrible situation"

In real life, right now, there are people in jobs just as bad as described in CWS, there's people being abandoned and horrifically exploited by their employer just like The Wellerman.

Who here's old enough to remember the Chilean miners caught in the cave in? 2010 feels like forever ago after the last couple of years we've had, yeah...

Can you imagine what it would feel like, being one of those workers? What their families and loved ones would have been feeling? There's a Worker's Song for that. The Miner's Lullaby, by Utah Phillips.

Folk songs have always been about the working class. Miners, manufacturers, sailors, longshoremen, railroad workers, prostitutes, the army, the navy, pink collar workers, farmers, seamstresses... Sometimes the songs romanticize the job or life, sometimes they tell it in gritty realistic detail.

Songs teach the history we none of us got in school. Abusive employers are universal, immoral and wrong though they are.

People do what they must. And workers work together to get through.

I'll keep this post handy, I think I am going on a deep dive through some folksongs I dimly remember.

Two points to close on today:

The cover of the Wellerman with the filked lyrics "soon may the vaccine come/to bring us out of i-so-la-tion/when the pandemic is done/we'll break quarantine and go" is a REAL AND VALID PART OF THE FOLK TRADITION. Reblog with a link to that if you know the one I mean.

Unions and worker's collectives are Good Things. Even if one may be "corrupt" or "too powerful" , bear in mind who benefits from that message being transmitted. Is it the Amazon worker fainting in the scorching warehouse? Is it the store clerk afraid to shelter in place because they'll lose their job? It is not.

To say you're nervous is an understatement

"Is this...?"

"It is! I worked hard on it and it was double the hard to keep it a secret from you"

Doesn't stop texting you about how good it is

When he gets the chance to see you he won't stop talking about it

Compliments you a lot and says you made a great job

Next thing you know is he plays your album on the next Chan's room

He tells everyone to show you support and love

"I've given Y/N beats to use for their songs, and they got the chance to include one on this album, can y'all guess which one is it?"

He'd be so excited about your comeback and would want to know every detail about it

He'd be really curious since every comeback you had, you'd tell him everything about the songs, concept and inspiration behind it

But this one was a complete enigma

He'd try to get information from you or even the producers that worked with you, but he fails in every occasion

Until a day before the comeback he convinces you to listen to the album

And who are you to tell him no

It's a boyfriend privilege

And he looks really curious, so you agree

So the night before, you're at your studio

He gets comfortable on the couch and closes his eyes

"Do you have to do that?"

"Of course I have to! So I can properly listen to and enjoy every song."

So the first song starts, and you look at him

He moves his head to the rhythm and hums

You think he looks adorable

and the urge to kiss him?? increasingly high

However, you just admire him while he's at his thing

But you are very curious to see how he's going to react

And thankfully, it's a good reaction

He is in a state of pure shock and his eyes go to the laptop where you're playing the album and to your smiling face

When he's out of the shock he starts vibing to the song and listening carefully to the lyrics

He makes a whole LIST of what he thinks of the album

He makes sure he picks up every single detail and compliments you for everything you did

Won't shut up about it, like ever

He'd send the link to the album to every contact he has on his phone when it's out

"Should I convince my management to use every single beat you've given to me? Because I'd love to see you this hyped all the time."

He's a proud boyfriend

He makes sure to clear his schedule and be with you to listen to your album together

Your staff has prepared a small party, so he's there to celebrate

When you released new music, you were used to send him the songs previously

He'd joke around and say things like he's a genius for giving that beat to you because it sounded amazing and fits well in the album

But overall he would be just very proud of your hard work

Would want to make lots of songs for you and make more collaborations in the future
