What do you think of Charlie Clapham as Doctor Doom?
Well, I'll start by reiterating that I don't like participating in fancasts and I don't usually feel comfortable cosigning them for Romani characters. First of all, we are still boycotting Marvel Studios and Disney, second, I don't want to see characters I like in the M C U. It's never faithful, it's rarely good, and I don't understand how some people haven't realized that yet.
More to the point, I don't like the way that this fandom tokenizes and objectifies Romani actors, and I don't think people understand that bringing these folks to the M C U fandom's attention puts them in a very vulnerable position. I'm only comfortable vocally supporting fancasts if the actor has put themselves forward and is embracing that attention. Charlie Clapham has put his own name in the ring by voicing interest in the role and advocating for Romani inclusion in superhero movies. I respect that and support him 100%.
Do I think that a British actor is the perfect fit? No. But as I said in this post, perfectly matching an actor to the nationality or vitsa of the character is less important to me, personally, than interrogating the reasons why American/British/Western Euro actors, especially actors who may be considered white-presenting, seem to be everybody's first choice for Romani characters who... maybe aren't any of those things.
In a perfect world, with the right script and the right director, a Romani actor like Clapham should be more than capable of bringing life to Roma characters from other communities or regions. But I want to see an overall more inclusive landscape of Romani representation-- we can't have someone like him playing a character like Doom every time.
Alright, now that my serious posting is done-- I think Charlie is literally SO fine and if he wants this job, he can get it. The role, I mean.

Do you have any opinions/meta on the portrayal of Doctor Doom's dictatorship in Marvel comics? As someone who is somewhat knowledgeable on the horrors of dictatorship, it always makes my skin crawl when writers unironically portray Latveria as this "benevolent dictatorship utopia" without bothering to put in the two seconds of thought/research that would immediately lead to the conclusion of why that is a wildly offensive, irresponsible, nonsensical, and logically unattainable concept to promote
I have to preface this by saying that I prefer the nice, likeable version of every character. Even characters I have no particular interest in, whatever the softer version of them is, that's how I think they should be written. I'm not saying this is a good thing or some kind of moral judgment. It's a matter of taste. Like, I can't handle Harry Potter because it's so mean, both in terms of the books themselves and a lot of the characters. People are always like, "Give us a Marauders show," and I'm like, why on Earth would anyone want to watch a television show about high school bullies? Are people okay?
Which is weird because I love Emma Frost. But I don't want Emma to be a villain. I don't know how to explain it. I guess I just prefer for characters to be well-intentioned. Characters can be prickly. They can have conflict, but when a character feels malicious, I lose interest in them.* I find it so much more compelling when characters are clashing but nobody is being cruel or monstrous, they just have their own viewpoint. So, on a purely character level, I do prefer for Doom to have good sides to him.
All that said, man, politics in superhero comics is tricky. It's a minefield. To play Devil's Advocate for the people writing these stories you dislike, what they're trying to convey is that the superhero perspective is not the only one, which is a sentiment I appreciate. I like when we admit that other people in this world do not have the views or experiences of the average superhero. I think that, theoretically, that complexity is a positive, but I don't think it's handled with much nuance or consistency within the stories themselves.
Where does Latveria fit on a left-right spectrum? What countries are they allied with? Who do they trade with? What are the internal politics? What real life country, past or present, is the best comparison point? Whomst can say. This is part of why politics in superhero comics is tricky. Because they don't really get into details. They just make broad gesturings at real life things and then the next writer contradicts that, and it all depends on what real world thing is trendy to reference. When you are Genosha, sometimes, you are South Africa, and sometimes, you are Yugoslavia. So it goes.
The flip side of all of this is, of course, that Doom is Roma, and the people who created him did not understand the sociopolitical implications of the character they created. What does it mean to be a "nationalist" when you are a Roma man from Eastern Europe? Sometimes, as a writer, you don't know that much about other cultures, and you write something with weird implications that you aren't aware of, and one day, it's 60 years later and that shit's still canon and we all just have to deal with it.
Like with a lot of dilemmas of superhero characterization, there's really no perfect answer because, no matter what angle you come at it from, there is the possibility of finding something questionable about it. If you get too far into trying to depict Latveria as a realistic dictatorship, there is weirdness/uncomfortable stuff on that end too.
Part of why our (read: USian) culture's current fixation on nostalgia is troublesome is that it is much more complicated to "fix" old canons than people think and often, it is impossible. We're stuck with all our movies being about characters created 60+ years, and they come with that baggage. A lot of times, it is the concept of the character where the problems lie, and the degree to which you can ever remedy that is... Well, it doesn't usually work 100%. And you can create other problems by trying to get rid of the old ones. Which is what you're complaining about, right? So, my tl;dr Doom take is that there is always going to be this weirdness to the character because of the nature of superhero comics. I get where you're coming from, but I also get the opposite argument. A true centrist, wow.
*Except, of course, for Zaladane, the only good supervillain ever created.

Rumor has it that Marvel is considering POC actors for Reed Richards. I have not heard similar news for Doom. On a scale of 78 to 312, how mad would you be if Marvel not only whitewashed Doom but ON TOP OF THAT cast a POC Reed and THEN played their dynamic like "arrogant white man thinks he's better/smarter than POC hero?" Not that I'm against POC Reed! But holy fuck, the tone-deafness of whitewashing a canonically Roma character while also race-swapping the white character to be "inclusive"...
I honestly would be very upset because Doctor Doom has been whitewashed three times already, not once have they ever cast a Romani actor nor have they spoken of his Romani background and the very reasons why became ruler of Latveria.
I'm not against the Fantastic Four having non white actors, but to do that and then cast Victor as a white man would legit make me foam at the mouth. Not to mention I believe some of Reed and Doom's animosity (specifically their early college years) does imo stem from Doom growing up as an oppressed minority while Reed had privilege.
There's so much to unpack with Doom's character and so much of it relies on his experiences as a Romani man, and in this day and age there is zero excuses for Marvel to not cast appropriately. I honestly don't have any hope of them doing anything remotely respectful in relation to Doom's Romani heritiage but I really hope they don't make him the "White Agressor" to any poc!Reed.

Another thing I love about Doctor Doom
is that despite being the most menacing motherfucker in marvel his backstory is almost like, stereotypically heroic. He's got more things in common with mythic nation-building hero-kings like King Arthur or Odysseus (or Caesar) than with preceeding mad scientists or evil wizards like Lex Luthor or like, Wotan. There's gotta be a better example than him but you get my point.
He's a poor child, the son of a witch, oppressed by an evil king. He has talents beyond any other, he's a better scientist than anyone else, he's a better magician than anyone else. He attempts to save his mother from the underworld like Orpheus and is cursed for it. Despite this, he forges an undefeatable suit of armor, returns home, deposes the evil king, and takes his rightful place as ruler. That's like, a hero's journey! A founding myth for Latveria! If it weren't for his relationship with Reed Richards, this would be a story of a legendary hero.
It would also be far less interesting. We've heard that story a thousand times. But make it into a supervillain? That's good stuff. Kirby designed him to evoke the Grim Reaper, a metal skull beneath a green robe, impending death, impending Doom. Then he also has the story of a hero, the charisma of a king, the intelligence of a genius, the wisdom of a sage. The contradiction is so wonderful and interesting and unlike so many other villains. I think a lot of villains before and since are in Doom's shadow. Probably the most well-known villain from the past 50 years, Darth Vader, is directly inspired by Doom!
Also, Doom can beat Superman but Lex Luthor can't beat the Fantastic Four. Cope. You'd need like, Superman, Batman, AND Wonder Woman to stand a chance.
As an aside, I've seen some people say that Doom leans into antiziganist stereotypes. There's a lot to criticize, especially in Lee and subsequent writers' use of the g-slur. I'm not Romani, and I wouldn't contest any Romani person who is uncomfortable with Doom's story either. So to be clear, here I'm speaking to the other non-Roma people who have criticized it. I've seen these people say that making Doom Romani is an example of demonizing Roma people because he's a villain, but I think it's more complicated than that. Doom's heritage is always shown as a sympathetic, humanizing part of his character. Lee and Kirby were both Jewish men who lived in the time of the Holocaust, and I don't think it's an accident they made him a victim of ethnic persecution.

hey i just stumbled across your blog the other day and saw that you’re a doomstrange enthusiast. first of all HUGE respect, second of all, i often find myself losing my mind over their whole dynamic during hickman’s secret wars. how stephen willingly stayed by victor’s side even though he found reed + the other survivors. the fact that he waited YEARS to wake them because his faith in victor and his ability to play god was so strong. idk i would love to hear any thoughts you have on secret wars doomstrange
A-Anon... Oh my Vishanti, I always go feral when someone asks me about them, ESPECIALLY Secret Wars. My apologizes in advance, I'll write an essay (that anon will definitely harass me after that but do I care at this point? nah 😅)
*cracks fingers*
Tumblr media
I don't even know where to start because I know the focus here is Secret Wars, so my apologizes in advance for digressing... But I believe their previous history is fundamental to understand their relationship and dynamics in Battleworld. It's not something that was born in that scenario. And this is important because Victor is not the kind of man who trusts easily. Hell, he doesn't trust people AT ALL. He's a man motivated by emotions, despite his intellectual facade. And his emotions are usually twisted. This is why he loves and hates Reed so much and can't bring himself to admit he loves the man, their egos will always represent a threat to his confidence and self-worth because, yes, he IS insecure. Early Victor von Doom is portrayed as a melancholic man who despises himself for being scarred and unworthy of love. In addition, he grew up in an environment of hatred: his family was persecuted due to their Roma heritage by the former baron of Latveria. Both his mother and father were chased to death and even when he could have been loved and healed by Valeria, he decided to cast her away.
The only human being Victor trusts is Boris, to be fair. And even so, it's only because Boris never dared to intrude or disrespect their boundaries. Boris does see Victor as a son but he will never bring himself to act like a father because 1) he's a servant and 2) he will always obey Victor, no matter how twisted his intentions are.
And why am I saying this? Because Victor can't take no for an answer. And he can't trust people fully. But there's a certain wizard who stumbled into his life, and the most important point is, Stephen didn't really care about Victor BEFORE Triumph and Torment. It has always been the other way around. Victor considered becoming Stephen's apprentice the moment Clea left. HOW DID HE EVEN KNOW CLEA LEFT IN THE FIRST PLACE? It's not like Stephen put a sign outside the Sanctum where you could read "I lost my girlfriend and apprentice, we're hiring".
Tumblr media
Doctor Strange v2 - Master of the Mystic Arts #57.
So truth be told, Victor was waaay more aware of Stephen's existence than the other way around (Stephen knew of Victor's magic skills before they met but they never really had the chance to meet before T&T, also the man is too busy to bother and go for a visit), and this is how Victor came up with a plan to save his mother and have Stephen's aid without even asking, because he's too proud for that: "Doctor Doom needs no one".
So there goes Stephen, "forced" to live 45 days in the company of Victor von Doom, teaching him magic, and learning Latverian, and unlocking Victor's past on day 1 because Boris was like "I'll tell everything about my master's past while he watches us over the monitor but that's okay because you seem to be a good man".
And this is the moment when Stephen comes to realize that maybe Victor isn't that villain everyone despises. He's actually a lovely man, broken and hurt, but a lovely one nonetheless. Victor allows Stephen to learn about his past, he allows Stephen to live in his castle, he allows Stephen to be aware of his strongest weakness (losing his mother to Mephisto). You see, Victor's thirst for power is one of his most intrinsic traits, and yet, when he has the opportunity to ask for more, he shows Stephen that no, actually, the most important thing to Victor is his mother. And the moment they go to hell, literally, in order to save Cynthia, Victor had tons of chances to betray Stephen and leave him behind. Because yes, he has betrayed his allies over and over again, but not Stephen, for some reason. He didn't allow the demons to touch him, he carried him in his arms even though we were robbed of this moment. And he left a device so Stephen could flee after the apparent "betrayal". This is NOT something Victor would do to his allies/enemies. This moment has been stuck in my mind for years now. Did Victor save Stephen because he saw him as a tool/potential ally for the future or because he cared? The mere fact that Victor doesn't allow the demons to touch Stephen convinces me that the latter is the right answer. Victor became soft towards Stephen, there's no other explanation to that. T&T was the first moment I realized that Victor was a gray character for yes, he CARES when portrayed correctly.
Tumblr media
Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom - Triumph and Torment.
And then they have yet another moment of realization during Doctor Strange - Sorcerer Supreme #34 (and Infinity Gauntlet in general). Of course, Doom starts off with a direct assault at Stephen but he immediately retreats when Adam Warlock explains to him what's going on. Because Victor is frustrated when left in the dark (and I'll make a parallel later, just hang in there). So of course he will work with Stephen, but he can't resist the Infinity Stones, can he? So the assault backfires and he's vulnerable. And who else can save Victor but Stephen? Better yet, who else will believe in Victor's good when no one else does?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Doctor Strange - Sorcerer Supreme #34.
I mean, Victor has never EVER said "I am at your disposal" to anyone, he's too proud for that. Stephen has the ability to suppress Victor's ego and make him soft. And can we blame him for it? Stephen is a lovely and passionate man who always believes in people's best intentions. Victor certainly sees him like a fool, but he says that softly. Because he's grateful for that. Stephen literally saved his life and returned the favor from T&T when he could have gotten rid of a threat, of a broken and evil man. He didn't. He believes in Victor.
And then it all comes down to the road towards Secret Wars. Victor is frustrated again because both Reed and Stephen are keeping secrets. He hates it. He hates how Stephen is mean and how Reed plays oblivious because he's aware they're both smart men and they share at least a single bit of respect. I love Hickman's portrayal of Reed and Victor because he doesn't paint them as enemies. There's the old good sexual tension but enough respect for them to dine together without the whole "I'm trying to kill your family while I declare my love for you." And this single panel from New Avengers v3 is perfect to depict how their relationship matured, but also... Stephen is there. Who invited Stephen? Was it Reed or Victor? In the end, it doesn't matter that much because Stephen works an as anchor. He knows Victor and he's not afraid of confronting him (which will be later seen in Savage Avengers). And as I said, Victor hates taking no for an answer so yes, he's frustrated but he can't bring them harm because he loves and hates Reed and he's soft toward Stephen, so he can't really harm Reed no matter how frustrated he is. This is definitely important because it will reflect on their relationship during Secret Wars.
Tumblr media
New Avengers v3 #7.
So Victor decides to work on his own to solve this whole puzzle while Stephen has a difficult and painful downfall while dealing with the Illuminati. He goes for dark magic and sacrifices so much in order to save something. It's only when he goes on his own journey that he finds a way toward the answer. And the answer is... well, Victor. Of all people, they meet at the end of the world. And both want to save something. Anything.
Tumblr media
New Avengers v3 #33.
AND I KNOW I WROTE SO MUCH JUST TO GET TO SECRET WARS, I'M SO SORRY LMAO
My thoughts on Secret Wars are vast. It seems to me that Stephen at first didn't fully trust Victor, this is why he made sure to build Castle Doom on the place he has found the Infinity Stones (since Battleworld is a patched world, they can only work on Doomstadt). Also the man needs his privacy so he has a private isle to keep his secrets since Victor isn't omniscient. And this is okay because yes, Stephen IS loyal. I like to believe that, the more they lived together, the more Stephen trusted Victor to rule Battleworld. It became something special to them, to the point of Stephen becoming obsessed with his work as Victor's sheriff.
Meanwhile, Victor allowed Stephen to have the chance to take the power of the Beyonders before his turn. As I said, Victor craves power, and yet... The man really prioritized Stephen because he ~trusts~ him. And Stephen couldn't do it, he was afraid of said power. And so Victor became God Emperor Doom. Only this time, he isn't alone. Victor was god before, both in the first Secret Wars and during Avengers - Emperor Doom. He was mad bored in Avengers - Emperor Doom. He was alone and tired of bureaucracy, so he allowed the Avengers to take him down. How did he last eight years being a god then? Well, because he has someone to indulge him now. Someone real from the old world, someone who stands by his side for the real Victor. Everyone else is fake, a product of the multiverse. Stephen is real, Stephen remembers the old world and the things they've been through together. Victor has someone to have petty arguments about the world, he wants to be with Stephen because of their common interests, not because of work. And somehow Victor admires Stephen for being so committed to what they built together. Victor isn't a lonely god anymore.
Tumblr media
Secret Wars #3.
And this is SO important because Victor sees how much Stephen gives his whole life to protect what they created together. Yes, he's a bore now but look at his commitment. He's begging Stephen to relax just for once so they can have a good time together. When is Victor ever relaxed?
Yes, yes, he's still depressed for being the only imperfect thing in his perfect world, he wishes he could leave in order to rest. Victor is a sad and tired god now because there's no point anymore. No challenge, no excitement. And the only person who can indulge him is too busy with their world to give him a little bit of entertainment. Still, Victor fully trusts Stephen now. And it's kinda mutual in a sense until things escalate, which is the whole drama of Secret Wars.
Mostly because Stephen wasn't aware that the pod protected the surviving heroes, ~especially~ Reed. He only found out when The Black Order showed up to threaten their world, so he decided to open it. And suddenly Stephen faces a huge conundrum. He KNOWS the heroes won't accept Victor as a god, as much as he KNOWS Victor will go apeshit the moment he sees Reed. And still, he stands by Victor.
Tumblr media
Secret Wars #4.
So you see, Stephen never really "betrayed" Victor when he sent the heroes away. He did what he did because he believed Victor was better than pure hatred, he believed Victor wasn't a murderer. Until the very end, he trusted that Victor could handle this situation without succumbing to his twisted emotions. Sadly, Stephen was wrong. Though... I'm 100% sure Stephen would be by Victor's side if the heroes decided to take him down. This is the unspoken words between them and what it hurts me the most. Victor never gave a chance for Stephen to explain himself. He was so blind by hatred that he immediately assumed Stephen would protect them instead of their world. And all Stephen wanted was for them to co-exist peacefully. A fool's dream, indeed. Captain Marvel, T'Challa, Namor, Jane, Reed, they'd NEVER accept Victor as a god, they'd NEVER bend their knees to him, not like Stephen did. Because, again, they don't believe in Victor as much as Stephen does. They won't indulge him as Stephen did. And thus he pays with his own life.
The moment Victor loses Stephen is the moment Battleworld falls. Stephen was Victor's anchor, the only real person who believed in him and supported him and loved what they built together. Victor regrets what he has done. He misses Stephen, he's ashamed of his sin. Owen exposes him. "You think I couldn't smell the guilt on you? You reek of shame, god." Victor spends a whole day with his head raised to Stephen's statue whereas he always looked down on people from his throne. This is how important Stephen was to him. This is tragic poetry at its finest.
Tumblr media
Secret Wars #5.
(Tumblr won't allow me to post more pics dang it.)
Victor also struggles to deal with his emotions after that since he feels betrayed. He does want to hate Stephen and see him as a traitor, so why does he stand there? Why does he reeks of guilt and shame? He loved Stephen, and yet he could never bring himself to admit that. Stephen was a snake in his garden, wasn’t he?
So yes, without Stephen, Victor will unleash his repressed emotions towards Reed all over again, and he will lose. I like to think that, when Reed says he could have done a better job, Victor only admits it because he knows Reed would never hurt Stephen. The face he does when Sue questions him...
Victor: Susan, there are complexities beyond even my ability to explain. If you will just trust me as you always have--
Sue: Like Stephen trusted you?
HE'S SO ASHAMED, and gods, Victor never regrets his actions.
They're truly a tragic pair, for Stephen will never be enough for Victor, no matter how hard he tries. No matter how deeply he believes in Victor's heart and potential for good. And yes, despite all that, the fool wizard STILL insists.
Stephen doesn't remember Battleworld in canon since Reed erased his memories of this event. I like to think that either Reed wanted to spare Stephen from a traumatic experience OR Victor asked Reed to do so when he was about to lose. Because, again, Victor cares. This is not canon, of course, just me finding answers.
But does that prevent Stephen from being a hopeless sweetheart? NAUR!! And this is when we have Infamous Iron Man, with Victor apologizing the best way he can, without saying "sorry I murdered you, I'm trying to be better". And then they keep going on their complicated yet lovely relationship in Savage Avengers - in which Victor saves Stephen's life and shows his vulnerable side to him, not to mention a single panel in Hellfire Gala (which I posted at some point, just search for "Hellfire Gala", in case you're interested).
Oof, I think I ranted more than I should. I just really love them and they have SO MUCH POTENTIAL, and such a tragic story. But yes, I'll always treasure their dynamics and relationship because they're basically Marc Anthony and Pussyfoot, Stephen being a lovely and passionate man, trying to bring the soft side of a tyrant who hides in an armor in order to keep people away from his heart. I love them.
Sorry about the long post and thank you for making my day, I'm struggling a lot this week so this helped me so much, thank you 😭
PS: some people are saying really bad stuff about me because I can easily ship both OTPs (and even make them work as an OT3), and they’re on this crusade to portray me as a liar and evil person who wants to ruin their ship, but at this point I’m tired and I don’t give a damn about them anymore. Lemme be passionate about what I love in peace. So yes, please ignore the gatekeepers and haters, they can’t do a thing about it anyways other than whine and act like children. Peace out.

Hellboy headcanons pt2
HB loves superheroes, there's a special place in his heart for lobster Johnson (obviously) and Captain America. He doesn't care about Steve Rogers as a character per se, he just loves all the n*zi punching.
Speaking of n*zis—HB grew up among Holocaust survivors. Even though he doesn't remember the years he and hitler lived at the same time, he remembers the survivors and their families and the tattoos. He absolutely does not tolerate Holocaust deniers, or antisemitism, or anti-roma.
Along the same vein, he doesn't tolerate any discrimination against LGBTQ+ folks. Hellboy says trans rights.
With the whole "right hand of doom" thing, he's a leftie. What he and no one else knows is that he comes from a very long line of lefties--his mother was one, and her mother, and her mother...etc.
He went through a phase in what would have been his teenage/young adult years where he despised his right hand. Had no idea what it was, he just hated it and the pain it caused him. Dragging it around takes a toll on his tiny body when he's young and that exhaustion lasts well into adulthood. He hates the way people stare at it even more than the pain.
He wanted to be able to hold delicate things in his hands without fear of crushing them, he wanted to get both his arms through his t-shirt sleeves for once. But the hatred faded into resignation, and that resignation eventually gave way to determination. His greatest act of defiance is turning that doomsday device into something that holds babies and pets dogs and weeds the professor's flower beds.
He's smart. Smarter than a lot of people would give him credit for. Being homeschooled by a host of professors and doctorates does that to a guy, but he was always sharp-witted beyond that too. His grasp on sarcasm and deadpan humor at the tender age of seven was both endless amusement and endless torment for Bruttenholm
He runs hot. Seeing as he's a critter of hell, his body temperature is much higher than a human's. His regular temp is around 105-107°, just hot enough that touching his skin is always a bit alarming.
This made growing up in the desert NBD for him. Comfortable, even. So when he starts spending time in colder climates, it's quite a physical adjustment for him. He gets cold so easily because of his higher body temp, so even mild weather like the 60°s-70°s can be uncomfortable. Hence the trench coat, and how he never seems to be too hot in it.

You know whose a good villain Doctor Doom, he's smart, he's well versed in both science and magic has a lot noble qualities cares deeply for his country and Roma right. Also is terribly portrayed in the movies he's in. I don't think it's possible for the MCU to do worse than Fan4stic. Who knows how Doom will turn out in MCU, they're inevitably going to whitewash him, they'll either ignore or badly write his noble aspects but bar is set real low so fingers crossed.
I don't know enough about Doom but from what little I've seen he seems interesting and he is a good villain. Also I've only watched the two fantastic 4 movies from 2005 and 2007 and I don't remember much but I take your word for his portrayal being bad in them. As for MCU yeah it's very possible that they whitewash him and portray him badly with their black and white mindset :/

Okay, should Doom be introduced in a Doctor Strange sequel, a Fantastuc Four film, or a film of his own?
I think Doom should be introduced in the after credit scene of one of the movies (I'm looking at you black panther for casting Namor) so the audience can find out after the fact that he was the direct manipulator behind a conflict in the film.
It doesn't even have to be big and bombastic or anything!! A little teaser just for the people that know him. Like just zooming in on even a part of his armor while he's sitting on a throne & someone with whatever accent they're going to choose for Latveria for the nth time explain whatever he did didn't exactly go as planned and a foot starts to tap in annoyance or he brings his hand down on his armest and it cuts to black with a nice metallic clang.
Here's a read more because I got into it & also off topic
BECAUSE I think it would be incredibly neat for Doom to be introduced in a parallel to Thanos so everyone assumes he is the Big Bad of the next phase (after all he is the one who discovered time travel in the comics, is an extremely powerful magic user, and has a fairly large history of travelling to different universes in the past). And we get more of a look at his origin (and perhaps even his first fight as a villain!) In the Fantastic Four film. (Which definitely should NOT kill him, not only is Doom absolutely NOT a "One-and-Done" kind of villain but low key kinda a betrayal to any of the FFs characters if they do kill him (ESPECIALLY if this is the first time he's ever tried anything)) BECAUSE it would be incredibly neat if MCU adapted a fairly common comic thing which is "Doom manipulating everyone and everyone being pissed he's the villain but actually he's trying to do something good just going about it weird" and people NOT KNOWING that for years and for films until the ACTUAL big bad who's been hiding in the shadows (Mephisto get your ass OUT HERE ALREADY) shows up and Victor is the first one to come raging into battle. And he gets to explain all of his BS was an attempt to delay or destroy the Big Bad before it came to this!! (He's still a villain! But he is not just a villain. That's always how Doom should be represented) (except for when it's after 2015 secret wars <3 fuck you marvel bring infamous back)
Here's a way Victor should NOT be introduced to the MCU: fucking Sokovian I will scream bloody murder but I feel like they're laying the foundation work for it and I will throw a fucking TANTRUM if they do it
1. Sokovia is currently in the midst of a civil war like how Latveria always is when Victor isn't king so it may just become Latveria or split into Latveria and Symkaria
2. Because they FUCKING whitewashed Wanda and tried to retcon to "oh it's ok she's not Roma anymore because we're adopting ✨quirky stereotypical Roma culture ✨ into her ✨fake European country✨ to make her feel more like a ✨Weird foreigner✨ like you want" it's entirely possible they're going to try the same thing with Victor to ✨justify✨ him having a ✨white actor✨
3. This is a little more of a side thing but Wanda's new outfit containing a cloak and hood genuinely terrifies me re: "oh it's based off this stereotypical thing in my home country" because Victor's like WHOLE thing is "the cool green cloak I got after I strangled the previous Baron to death during my coup and I took his hood and stuff as a symbol because we don't have crowns"
Yeah if they do that I'm just going to start crying

Victor Von Doom was born decades ago to a tribe of Latverian Romani people under the rule of an unnamed nobleman called the Baron. Victor's mother was witch Cynthia Von Doom who died by Mephisto's hand while Von Doom was young. His father, Werner, was the leader of the tribe and a renowned medicine man who kept his wife's sorceress life quiet in order to protect Victor from a similar fate. Soon after Cynthia's death, the Baron's wife grew incurably ill from cancer and Werner was called to the capital to heal her. When she succumbed to illness, the Baron labeled Werner a murderer and called for his death. Werner escaped with young Victor, having realized the night before the woman would die. He goes on to die of exposure on the mountainside, cradling the boy in a final embrace and giving him his garments to keep him warm. Victor survived and, on return to the Romani camp, discovered his mother's occult instruments and swore revenge on the Baron. Victor grew into a headstrong and brilliant man, combining sorcery and technology to create fantastic devices which would keep the Baron's men at bay and protect the Roma people. His exploits attracted the attention of the dean of Empire State University, who sent someone to the camp.[49] Offered the chance to study in the United States, Von Doom chose to leave his homeland and his love, Valeria, behind.
Once in the United States, Victor met fellow student and future rival Reed Richards, who was intended to be his roommate, but Von Doom disliked him and asked for another roommate. After a time, Victor constructed a machine intended to communicate with the dead, specifically his mother. Though Richards tried to warn him about a flaw in the machine, seeing his calculations were a few decimals off, Victor continued on with disastrous results, the machine violently failing with the resulting explosion seemingly severely damaging his face.[49] It is later revealed that Ben Grimm, a friend of Richards who despised Victor for his superior attitude, tampered with the machine. He would later blame himself for Doom's initial fall to villainy and rise to power, but never revealed this information to anyone.[50] Expelled after the accident, Victor traveled the world until he collapsed on a Tibetan mountainside. Rescued by a clan of monks, Victor quickly mastered the monks' disciplines as well as the monks themselves. Victor then forged himself a suit of armor, complete with an iron mask, but before the mask had finished cooling, Victor put it on permanently bonding it to his skin, and then took the mantle Doctor Doom.[49] As Doctor Doom, he would go on to menace those he felt responsible for his accident—primarily, Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four. He succeeded in leading a revolution to take over Latveria from the Baron, taking an interest in the welfare of the Roma.
In his first appearance, Doctor Doom captures the Invisible Girl, using her as a hostage so the Fantastic Four will travel back in time to steal the enchanted treasure of Blackbeardwhich will help him to conquer the world and rule it peacefully, but he is fooled by Reed Richards, who swaps the treasure with worthless chains.[51] Doom then forms an alliance with the Sub-Mariner, who places a magnetic device in the Baxter Building. However, Doom uses this to pull him and the Fantastic Four into space, thinking this will rid him of those capable of preventing him from assuming control of the world's governments; the Sub-Mariner gets to Doom's ship and returns the Baxter Building to New York, stranding Doom on an asteroid. Returning to Earth after learning the secrets of an advanced alien race, the Ovids, Doom accidentally exchanges consciousnesses with Mister Fantastic; Richards, inhabiting Doom 's body, switches the two back, and Doom ends up trapped in a micro-world when he is hit with a shrinking ray he had intended to use on the rest of the Fantastic Four.[52] Doom takes over this micro-world, but leaves after the Fantastic Four end his rule. He is then thrown into space when he attempts to prevent the Fantastic Four from leaving the micro-world.[53] Doom is saved by Rama-Tut, and he returns to Earth to destroy the Fantastic Four by turning each member against the other using a special berry juice. Richards outwits Doom by using the hallucinogenic juice against him. Doom, believing he has killed Richards in a test of willpower, departs certain of his victory and superior intelligence, although saddened.[54]
During the 1960s, Doom attempted to recruit Spider-Man into joining forces with him,[55]and he came into conflict with the Avengerswhen Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch illegally entered Latveria to find a long-lost relative of theirs.[56] He stole the Silver Surfer's powers in 1967, but lost them after breaching a barrier Galactus had set for the Surfer on Earth.[57][58]
During the 1970s, Doom branched out to more Marvel titles, with a battle between Victor Von Doom and Prince Rudolfo over control of the Latverian throne being featured in Astonishing Tales.[59] Doctor Doom also attempts to use the Hulk as his slave during two issues of The Incredible Hulk.[60] The character also made several appearances in the story arcs of Super-Villain Team-Up, starting in 1975, as well as appearances in Marvel Team-Up, beginning with issue #42 (February 1976). In August 1981, Doom also made an appearance in Iron Man when the two traveled to Camelot, where Stark thwarted Doom 's attempt to solicit the aide of Morgan le Fay into defeating King Arthur's forces with an army of revived warriors who were slain by the sword Excalibur; Doom swore deadly vengeance for that interference, which stranded him in the past - this vengeance had to be indefinitely delayed in the interest of returning to the present day.[61] A particularly detailed plan saw Doom ally with the Puppet Master to trap the Fantastic Four within the miniature artificial city of "Liddleville", their minds trapped inside tiny cybernetic, part-organic copies of their original bodies. However, Doom perverts what had been intended by the Puppet Master as a chance to give Alicia and Ben a normal life into a trap, deliberately disrupting Reed's connection to his copy to make it hard for him to concentrate while "Vincent Vaughn"- Doom's alias as he monitors the project- belittles him, and the Puppet Master eventually helps the FF learn the truth and escape Liddleville while trapping Doom in the android body he had used to monitor the FF.[62]
During John Byrne's run in the 1980s, Doom attempted to steal the cosmic powers of Terrax, but Doom's body was destroyed in the resulting fight between Terrax and the Silver Surfer.[63] Doom survived by transferring his consciousness to another human, and is returned to his original body by the Beyonder[64] (who had reached into the relative future to 'recruit' Doom for the conflict on Battleworld that the FF had participated in a few months ago from their perspective). While on Battleworld, Doom attempted and briefly succeeded in stealing the Beyonder's power, but it proves too vast for him to control and the disembodied Beyonder is able to take his power back.
When Franklin Richards was kidnapped by Onslaught, Doom joined the Fantastic Four, Avengers and the X-Men to battle Onslaughtin Central Park. An enraged Hulk was able to crack open Onslaught's shell. However, Onslaught remained as pure psionic energy, separated Hulk and Banner, planning to spread across the planet. Thor Odinsonplunged into Onslaught, trying to contain him. The Fantastic Four, the majority of the Avengers, and the Hulk-less Banner followed in short order, with Doom being forced to join the sacrifice when Iron Man tackled the villain into the energy mass. Thanks to this sacrifice, the X-Men finally managed to destroy Onslaught. Doom, the Fantastic Four, and the Avengers and Banner were believed dead but were instead saved by Franklin, who created a pocket dimension called Counter-Earth to keep them safe. After several months away, the missing heroes returned from Counter-Earth, except for Doom, who remained there for a time. Doom uncovers the secret power at the heart of the planet, an avatar of his arch-foe Reed Richards' son, Franklin, the super-powered youth who conjured this globe and left a bit of himself behind to guide it from within. Doom managed to convince the little boy to relinquish control of this world with little more than a few errant promises of a better life.
When Susan Richards experienced problems with her second pregnancy while Reed was away, Johnny contacted Doom for help, correctly guessing that Doom will be unable to pass up a chance to succeed where Reed failed (due to the complex events involving the then-recent resurrection of Galactus, this pregnancy is a 'repeat' of an earlier one where Sue miscarried). Doom not only saves Sue's daughter but also cured Johnny of a recent problem with his powers where Johnny was unable to 'flame off' without technological support after becoming overcharged with energy from the Negative Zone by channeling Johnny's excess energy into Sue to keep her alive. After the birth, Doom's only apparent condition for his aid is that he be allowed to name Sue and Reed's daughter, calling her 'Valeria' after his long-lost love. However, this inspires a new plan where Doom makes Valeria his familiar while seeking out her namesake as part of a deal with a trio of demons; by sacrificing his old lover, Doom is granted magical powers on the level he would possess if he had spent the past years studying sorcery rather than science.[65] With this new power, Doom trapped Franklin in Hell, immobilised Doctor Strange, and then neutralises the FF's powers, torturing the other three while taunting Reed by leaving him in his magical library, comparing it to giving a dog a road-map as he concluded that it would be impossible for Reed to master sufficient magical skill to be a threat to him.[66]However, Reed was able to release Doctor Strange's astral self from Doom's traps, allowing Strange to give Reed a sufficient crash-course in magic for Reed to free the rest of the team and trick Doom into angering his demonic benefactors, prompting them to take him to Hell.[67] Determined to ensure that Doom cannot be a further threat, Reed takes control of Latveria to dismantle all of Doom's equipment,[68] simultaneously subtly driving his family away so that he can trap Doom and himself in a pocket dimension so that he can make sure Doom never threatens anyone again.[69] However, this plan backfires when the rest of the team attempt to rescue Reed, resulting in Doom transferring his spirit into Sue, Johnny and Ben respectively, forcing Reed to kill his best friend to stop his greatest enemy.[70] Doom was returned to Hell, but Reed is later able to use the same machine Doom once tried to create to travel to Heaven and restore Ben to life.[71] Doom remained in Hell until Mjolnir falls to Earth after the events of Ragnarok as it creates a dimensional tear during its fall that allows Doom to escape, although he decides to focus on rebuilding his power base when he proves unable to even lift the hammer. The events of this were deleted from Marvel Comics continuity in the 2015 series Secret Wars.
Later, a Doombot was taken down by Reed Richards, Henry Pym, Iron Man, She-Hulk and others in New York City. Whether or not it was sent by Doom himself remains to be seen, as does his role in the overall conflict. Doom was not invited to the wedding of Storm and the Black Panther. However, he did send a present: an invitation to form an alliance with Latveria, using the Civil War currently going on among the hero community as a reason to quite possibly forge an alliance between their two countries. When Black Panther, on a diplomatic mission to other countries with Storm, did show up in Latveria, he presented them with a real present and extended another invitation to form an alliance with Black Panther. He demonstrated behavior very uncharacteristic of him, however, which may or may not become a plot point later. Panther spurned the invitation, detonating an EMP that blacked out a local portion of Latveria before Doctor Doom 's robots could destroy his ship. Later on, Doom is then shown collaborating with the Red Skull on a weapon which will only "be the beginning" of Captain America's suffering. Von Doom gave the Red Skull the weapon because the Red Skull gave Victor pieces of technology from an old German castle. The castle was owned by a "Baron of Iron" centuries prior, who had used his technological genius to protect himself and his people. The map the Red Skull used to find the castle bore a picture of Von Doom. Doom states that the technology the Red Skull gave him is more advanced than what he currently has and that he will become the Baron of Iron in his future; although he does not agree with the Red Skull's principles, the time paradox the situation causes forces him to comply. The Red Skull is currently in the process of reverse-engineering Doom's weapon for multiple uses, rather than the single use Doctor Doom agreed to.
At the end of the first chapter of the X-Men event Endangered Species, Doom is among the various geniuses that Beast contacts to help him reverse the effects of Decimation. He spurns Beast by stating that genetics do not number among his talents. In Spider-Man: One More Day, Doom was among those that Spider-Man contacts to help save Aunt May.[72] Doom also makes Latveria into a refugee camp for the Atlanteans following the destruction of their underwater kingdom[73] as well as becoming allies with Loki in his plot to manipulate his brother into unwittingly release his Asgardian allies.[74]
Doctor Doom later defends Latveria from the Mighty Avengers, following a revelation that it was one of Doom's satellites that carried the 'Venom Virus' released in New York City (which was actually hacked by an enemy of Doom).[75] In a battle with Iron Man and the Sentry, the time travel mechanism within his armor overloads, trapping Doctor and his opponents at some point in the past - Doom continues his relationship with Morgan le Fayusing his time machine.[76] He and Iron Man managed to get back to the present, but Doom has left Iron Man in his exploding castle. Despite his helping, Doom ended up falsely incarcerated at The Raft.
During the Secret Invasion storyline, Doom was among those who escaped the Raft when a virus was uploaded into its systems by the Skrulls. In the aftermath of the Secret Invasion, Doctor Doom became a member of the Dark Illuminati alongside Norman Osborn, Emma Frost, Namor, Loki's female form, and the Hood, intending to seek revenge on the world for falsely ruining his reputation. At the end of this meeting, Namor and Doom are seen having a discussion of their own plans that have already been set in motion.[77]
Doom soon allies himself with the isolationist group known as the Desturi to take control of Wakanda, attacking and wounding T'Challa, then the current Black Panther, maiming him enough to prevent him from holding the mantle again. Doom's main objective was to secure Wakanda's store of vibranium, which he could mystically enhance to make himself invulnerable. Doom was also a part of the group known as the Intelligencia after being captured to complete their plan. With the help of Bruce Banner, he escaped and returned to Latveria, damaged by this experience.
At the start of the Siege storyline, Doom was with the Cabal discussing the current problems with the X-Men and both Avengers teams. Doom demands that Osborn at once reverse his course of action against his ally Namor, to which Osborn refuses, saying that he and Emma Frost had "crossed the line" with him. Doom, loathing Thor and the Asgardians all the more due to his recent defeat at their hands, claims that he will support Osborn's "madness" should Namor be returned to him, but Osborn refuses. Osborn's mysterious ally, the Void, violently attacks Doom, and an apparently amused Loki tells the Hood that he should go, as there is nothing here for either of them, which the Hood, now loyal to Loki due to his hand in the restoration of his mystical abilities, agrees. However, it is revealed that "Doctor Doom" who had been involved with the Cabal was actually an upgraded Doctor Doombot, which releases swarms of Doctor Doombot nanites against the Cabal, tearing down Avengers Tower and forcing its denizens, such as the Dark Avengers, to evacuate. Osborn is rescued by the Sentry, who destroys the body. When Osborn contacts the real Von Doom, Victor informs him not to ever strike him again or he would be willing to go further.[33]
It has been revealed that the Scarlet Witch seen in Wundagore Mountain is actually a Doctor Doombot which apparently means that the real one has been captured by Doom sometime after the House of M event.[78] It is revealed that Wanda's enhanced powers were a result of her and Doom's combined attempt to channel the Life Force in order to resurrect her children. This proves to be too much for Wanda to contain and it overtook her. With Wiccan and Doom's help, they seek to use the entity that is possessing Wanda to restore the powers of mutantkinds. This is stopped by the Young Avengers (who are concerned at the fall-out that would ensue if the powerless mutants are suddenly re-powered) only to find out that Doom intended to transfer the entity into his own body and gain Wanda's god-like powers of re-writing reality for himself.[79]Doom becomes omnipotent with powers surpassing those of beings as the Beyonderor the Cosmic Cube. The Young Avengers confront him, but Doom accidentally kills Cassie just before Wanda and Wiccan stole his new-found powers.[80]
At the start of the story arc "Fantastic Four: Three", a guilt-ridden Doom felt that he needed to be "reborn" and was making plans to abdicate his throne and give it to Kristoff when Valeria teleported to his room unexpectedly asking for his assistance to help her father. Valeria quickly notices that Doom had suffered brain damage from his previous battle and is slowly losing his memories; she makes a deal with him to restore his mental capacities if he helps Reed and the Fantastic Four. Doom agrees to her proposition.[36]Later, Doom appears among those in attendance at Johnny Storm's funeral.[37]
Due to the agreement, Doom was recommended by Nathaniel and Valeria Von Doom to be a member of the Future Foundation.[38] Objecting, Thing attacks Doom out of anger, but the fight was stopped by Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, who welcomes Victor to their group. When Valeria asks Victor if he has a backup for restoring his memories, he reveals that Kristoff Vernard is his backup. Afterward, Mister Fantastic, Spider-Man, Nathaniel, Valeria, and Victor head to Latveria to meet with Kristoff and request his help. Mister Fantastic sets up a brain transfer machine in order to help restore Victor's memories and knowledge, which is successful. When Kristoff wants to return the throne to him, Doom states that it is not time yet because of a promise he made to Valeria. When Mister Fantastic asks what promise Doom made to Valeria, Victor states that he made a promise to help her defeat Mister Fantastic when she calls for it.[39] Doom decides to hold a symposium on how to finally defeat Reed Richards. The Thing and the evolved Moloids give an invitation to the High Evolutionary. Dragon Man and Alex Power give an invitation to Diablo. Upon receiving an invitation from Spider-Man, Mad Thinker is convinced to take part in the event. Bentley 23 even gives an invitation to his creator, the Wizard, along with two A.I.M. lieutenants. However, it is subsequently revealed that the 'Richards' they have been invited to defeat are actually members of the "Council of Reeds" (alternate versions of Reed who were trapped in this universe by Valeria a while back, possessing Reed's intellect while lacking his conscience).[81] While Spider-Man and Invisible Woman make sandwiches for the kids, Mister Fantastic, Victor, Valeria, and Nathaniel Richards meet with the supervillain geniuses and Uatu the Watcher about what to do with the Council of Reeds.[82]
Around this time, Von Doom performed brain surgery on the Hulk to separate him from Bruce Banner, extracting the uniquely Banner elements from Hulk's brain and cloning a new body for Banner, in return for a favor from the Hulk.[83] This clone is killed soon afterward.[84]Later, Doom is apparently killed by the Mad Celestials.[85] With no knowledge as to how he survived, Doom awakens in the ruins of the Interdimensional Council of Reeds, where Valeria had left him a present: the full army of lobotomized Doctor Dooms from alternate realities who were previously captured by the Council, along with two Infinity Gauntlets from alternate universes. With these resources, Doom created the Parliament of Doom, an interdimensional council charged with maintaining peace across the multiverse.[86]He later returned to again rule Latveria, upon ruling the council for a millennium.[87] An ill-fated excursion into the alternate universe of the one of Infinity Gauntlets resulted in Reed and Nathaniel Richards rescuing Doom from his own council.[88]
During the a confrontation between the Avengers and the X-Men, Doom allies with Magneto and others against Red Skull's Red Onslaught form.[89] In an attempt to atone for past misdeeds, Doom absorbs the Scarlet Witch reality-altering powers and resurrects the dead Cassie Lang, whom he had accidentally killed.[90] He subsequently makes a Faustian deal with an unspecified demon to resurrect Brother Voodoo.[91] After returning to normal, Doom is taken into captivity for his initial killing of Lang.[92]
With the final Incursion imminent during the Secret Wars storyline, Doom usurps the power of the Beyonders with the aid of Doctor Strange and the Molecule Man,[40] collecting what he can of the destroyed multiverse and forming a new Battleworld consisting of different alternate realities. He also assumes the role of God and claims complete dominion of this new world and its inhabitants, controlling them into thinking he was always the almighty force of creation; he takes Sue as his wife, Franklin and Valeria as his children, condemns the Human Torch to be the sun and Ben Grimm to be the Shield wall, and rewrites his own history to resurrect the majority of those whose deaths he caused. Richards and a ragtag collection of heroes and villains that survived the destruction of all universes challenge Doom and, with the help of Molecule Man, are able to take his power and restore the multiverse. Opting to heal rather than harm, Reed finally uses the Beyonder's power to heal Doom's face.[41]
In the All-New, All-Different Marvel, Doom returns to Latveria where he saves Tony Starkby incapacitating a group of Latverian rebels with a sonic attack.[42] Doom reveals to Tony that he is a new man and wishes to help, giving the latter one of the Wands of Watoomb to keep safe from Madame Masque. When more rebels arrive, Doom teleports Iron Man to the Bronx Zoo.[43]
Doom finds Iron Man again and teleports the two to the Jackpot Club in Chicago to confront Madam Masque.[44] Discovering that Madame Masque is displaying symptoms of demonic possession, Doom has Tony trap her in the Iron Man Armor then proceeds to exorcise the demon from her. Doom disappears before Tony regains consciousness.[45] Doom appears once again and interrupts Tony's breakfast date with Amara. Doom is trying to prove to Tony that he has changed and is trying to correct the mistakes he has made, explaining that he has arrived to check up on Tony and see if he is suffering from any side-effects from being in the presence of an exorcism. Tony still refuses to trust him after what he has done and Doom leaves once again.[46]
Following the defeat of Tony Stark at the hands of Captain Marvel at the conclusion of Civil War II, Doom discovers his calling. Remembering his dissatisfaction as a God, Doom decides that it was his role to help heal the world. Inspired by Stark, and informing his A.I. duplicate that he intends to establish Stark's legacy, Doom fights for his unique brand of justice as the third Iron Man, and later comes into conflict with Mephistodisguised as The Maker, the evil Ultimate Universe version of Reed Richards.[47] Doom goes on to join the Avengers, and later conceives a child with Dr. Amara Perera.[48]Doom's sudden change sparked grievances that resulted in a group of villains, led by the Hood, to join forces to take him down.[93]After the villains besieged Doom several times, the final battle occurred when the Hood attempted to take over Stark Industries, which happened not long after Stark had secretly recovered from his injuries. Tony confronted the Hood and stumbled into Victor. Doom took on the Hood and the unidentified demon possessing him one-on-one, and his face was severely burned by the demon in the process. Following the villains' defeat, Victor retreated to the ruins of Castle Doom.[94]
Later, a young woman named Zora Vokuvic breaks into Castle Doom demanding to see Doctor Doom. She makes it past the many Doombots that guard the palace before finally confronting Doom himself. She tells him that Latveria has been overrun with dictators and opportunists since he left and that the nation needs its leader back. Initially rejecting Zora's pleas for help, showing her his grotesquely scarred face in the process, Victor finally agrees when she refuses to give up and hands him his iconic mask, telling him that Latveria needs its true champion. Taking the mask, Doom ventures out into Latveria, quashing the civil war that is apparently raging and vowing to fix the country with his own strength – summoning magical energy as he does.[95]

Something worth mentioning about Doctor Doom’s backstory is that depending on the time scale he would have been born after the Porrajmos.
Which means his community suffered greatly.
The ideas that he could never be weak and that Doom is superior came from his own peoples suffering.
yyyeeeahhhhh that's the case for most, if not all Romani characters in the Marvel universe. Wanda and Pietro are famously the children of Holocaust survivors.
The whole point of Victor's backstory is that his community was suffering, and that he became the person he became because of the violence he witnessed, and the losses he experienced. They don't talk about the Holocaust directly, but the themes you're getting at are already present-- they're kind of the whole point.
Today, August 2nd, is actually Romani Holocaust Memorial Day. I'm not going to shy away for representing this part of our history, but I would like to say that the Romani people are widespread, and our history is long and complicated. We can represent other parts of that history, and other instances of persecution, without comparing everything to the Porrajmos/Samudaripen.
Anyways, now that we're talking about it, I have post with a brief historical primer on Romani Holocaust victims here. Dikhe Na Bister is posting some interesting stuff about their Memorial Day activities, and they're also running a fundraiser for Roma Holocaust survivors in Ukraine.

Oh no I'm going to go against your ask title and mention the mcu. I just saw someone say Wanda had to be white because the fox legal drama meant they couldn't use her backstory. I was under the impression the mcu just couldn't talk about X-Men felt stuff, how could they legally say she can't be Romani? She could have different parents who were still Roma. Do you know anything about this? Were they really not allowed to make the twins Romani?
“Don’t ask me about the MCU” is a remnant of the halcyon days of 2017 when my opinion of the MCU was, on balance, that I didn’t care about it and it was exhausting to talk about it with people who had such strong (positive or negative) opinions. But in recent weeks, the MCU has chosen violence and my opinion has shifted from “this is not for me” to something that can only be expressed via terrifying raptor screeches.
ANYWAY.
The teal deer version is that there is no evidence that there was some “rights issue” forcing them to cast white people or not mention some backstory element (besides mutants/Magneto), and it’s literally just a thing people made up to make themselves feel better. You see, there are people who get that there are a lot of problems with MCU Wanda, and they have come up with these fictional narratives where, well, if this thing (that I just made up) is true, then It's okay and not actually bad.
This is most obvious with The Hydra Thing™, which [velociraptor noises], but there’s also a version that cropped up around Quicksilver dying. People are like, “This is bullshit... so I’m gonna invent a conspiracy where they had to kill him off because of Rights Reasons.” Which, as I’ve said before, isn’t true. Quicksilver died in every draft of the Age of Ultron script. He died in the draft from February/March of 2013, back when that character was still Juggernaut in the DOFP script. Unless you believe Joss Whedon is a time traveler or a psychic, no, this wasn’t because of “rights issues.”
It’s the same thing with the casting. They cast white people because they wanted to. There is reason to think, based on interviews, that there are references to them being Romani in the AOU script. (There’s also a racist running joke about Wanda and Pietro being thieves that you can see some of in the publicly available deleted scenes, which makes me think, yeah, they were really gonna do That Shit.) Whedon said that scenes giving more details about Wanda and Pietro’s background were removed “for time,” which conveniently includes the more potentially controversial elements (their hatred of the United States is also on the cutting room floor).
There’s a pervasive belief that there is something weird about white people playing these characters. That this has to be some kind of outlier. But it’s not an outlier. What happened with the twins is the norm for how Romani characters are treated in Hollywood adaptations, at least in terms of casting and erasure. Just look at the Doctors Doom in various terrible films or the other version of Quicksilver. There is nothing unusual or unexpected about Wanda’s ethnicity being erased. It does not need an explanation beyond the all-consuming power of white-as-default in our culture.
That’s not to let anyone off the hook. This is Disney. They know about every possible backlash before it happens. Just because other people have done a shitty thing doesn’t mean you get off scot-free, and given the way both Whedon and Olsen have acted with regards to this matter, they’re the last people you should be giving the benefit of the doubt.

Wastelanders: Doom #1
(w) Torunn GronBekk (a) Julius Ohta (colorist) Bryan Valenza There were 3 editors on this comic: Editor in Chief - C.B. Cebulski Editor - Mark Basso Assistant Editor - Drew Baumgartner Please e-mail [email protected] to point out that Victor Von Doom and Valeria Karlea (also known as Valeria, Victor’s first love) were white washed in this issue and inform them that this is unacceptable for two Romani characters.
Two comic pages that show Doctor Doom, Victor Von Doom viewing some old memories, the first memory is of Valeria, a Romani woman that Victor was in love with when they were younger, the third memory shows Victor as a child. The problem with both of these arts is that it depicts both Victor and Valeria as white blonde Caucasian people instead of their true ethnic background which is them being Romani people with dark hair, dark eyes, and varying light to dark skin tones over the years in comics. Although at times Victor’s hair is depicted as a reddish brown instead of a dark brown the fact remains that neither of these characters were ever white blonde looking people. The images above have white washed two characters of color and neither the colorist, nor THREE EDITORS thought to check to make sure that this was corrected.
Victor proudly claims his heritage, and his background is essential to his character’s story and growth. This is NOT a new thing, this has been his original story since his background was first revealed in Fantastic Four (1961) Annual 2.

Valeria has always been a Romani woman, her first appearance is in Marvel Super-Heroes (1967) #20

Once again there is no reason that these two characters were white washed yet here we are in 2022, decades since they first appeared in comics, still dealing with this major problem that occurs to many characters of color within the comics.

Note
Honestly, is Doctor Doom being Romanian even that important? Actors are meant to ACT, so what’s the problem if they get someone who isn’t Romanian to play him, so long as they do research. It all stinks of racism, and for a white character anyway.
Because Roma folk deserve to have representation too. Also he's Latverian which is based on like Eastern Europe lmao
