I'd like to specify a request for good Thai shows that just finished. They're my favorite for many reasons, and I also enjoy getting to learn more Thai words.

Good 2023 Thai BL That Recently Finished (to Binge!)

(I actually held off answering this one until a few had ended this week because I didn't have many for 2023. It's not been great year for Thai BL so far IMHO. Now South Korea is KILLING it. So is Japan.. in a different way.)

My School President

9/10

GMMTV gave us a classic high school set Thai BL with tropes like messy boys singing their feelings that made this one Love Sick for the modern age with all the gentle sweetness and pining ache, but none of the dated damaging tropes or issues.

Yes, we’ve seen it all before, but I still ADORED this. And there is a lot to be said for the classics being re-executed perfectly. Who let my BL be this wholesome and funny? This show was fantastic, it’s only flaw was the singing (and that’s my baggage).

Step By Step

This was Thailand’s answer to The New Employee, and everything I loved about that show I loved about this one.

This was an office romance between stern boss and sweet subordinate that felt more authentic to an office environment than previous Thai BLs of this ilk. And that authenticity added tension to the narrative and character development (how novel). Now that might be because it has western source material, or it might be because it is actually kind of old-fashioned (it’s been years since I worked as an office grunt). I also really enjoyed the brothers’ relationship, and kinda wished they hadn’t attempted (and failed) to give said brother his own side BL.

La Pluie

This BL takes to task the fated mates trope and what it means to have love chained intimately to predestination. It’s about how faith in destiny before choice diminishes the authenticity of emotion, relationships, and connection. This is a high concept to examine through the lens of a BL.

By activating + examining the soulmates trope this show is challenging a foundation of romance: the idea that there is one person meant to be your one romantic partner all your life. This means that we, as viewers, spend much of the show worried about it having a happy ending, and that’s the source of both its brilliance and tension: would the narrative have the strength to truly challenge its own romantic core?

But, ultimately, all this elevated complexity was executed in a somewhat shaky manner with the narrative derailing into some serious pacing issues and characters manipulated by miscommunication. However, with good chemistry and decent acting all around, plus some excellent high heat and representation of consent and a few other rare tropes, this one has to (like it’s sibling show My Ride) earn a 9/10.

Make a Wish

PNR (from Sammon: Manner of Death & Triage) about a doctor who can see the dead and strikes a bargain with a wish-granting irreverent tree angel - naturally they fall in love.

Stars Fluke Natouch opposite not-Ohm, but who cares bc Fluke has chemistry with everybody. Once again the Thai afterlife is incredibly bureaucratic but I enjoyed the premise and the unfolding of the story (it’s not predictable but still satisfying and with nice little twist). I like that the doctor is just gay af and has a fag hag bestie and everything.

The cast is excellent but the comedic stylings are too overblown and tonally off. It had sad parts and did make me cry but is ultimately happy with a great sex scene, good smiley kisses, and all the agency. (grey)

Moonlight Chicken

8/10

I enjoyed this complicated little show, even though it’s spectacularly messy gay with lots of shrapnel and authentic pain.

I thought EarthMix turned in their most compelling performance to date. But it was GeminiFourth who stole my heart.

That said, the most interesting central relationship was that of Jim & Li Ming, their father-son angst mixed with evident affection made me tear up.

This was more slice of life than it was BL, but it ended happily so I’m not mad at it. (YouTube)

Never Let Me Go

8/10

Bodyguard romance where poor boy must watch over rich boy for family obligation reasons. Simple premise well executed with a few bumps that made it feel like it was trying to tackle too much (when it wasn’t).

Still, an enjoyable show that benefited from being handed to PondPhuwin who did a stellar job with their roles and chemistry. Is it going into permanent rewatch rotation? No, but a solid GMMTV offering. Of GMMTV passing out new series to established pairs this has been the most successful IMHO. PondPhuwin were about 10000x better in this than FUTS (and that's FUTS's fault, not theirs).

It's typically Thai in that its a bit bloated and has a confusing plot, but at least it HAD a plot and the central relationship is solid and loyal. Their Our Skyy 2 follow up is great. And very much adds to the cannon in a fun way rather than feeling superfluous - making this show ultimately 14 eps rather than the usual 12. (YouTube)

Destiny Seeker

8/10

A darn near perfect pulp featuring 3 likable grumpy/sunshine pairings with uncomplicated iterations of enemies to lovers. At least one half of each does a decent amount of pining and there’s good chemistry, classic tropes, and communication rep. It’s fun and full of linguistic jokes.

Sublimely cheesy but a good rainy day offering with tons of rewatch potential. (WeTV)

Bed Friend

8/10 (Triggers include: child abuse, attempted rape, family abuse)

Office frienamies transition a flaming hot one night stand into a f-buddy relationship that is built on a puppy/cat dynamic (and kinks into it at one point). Our puppy is loyal, smitten, and protective with endlessly longing eyes, while our cat is snarky, prickly, and deeply damaged (ALL THE TRIGGERS).

NetJames give lovely high-heat with excellent chemistry and tuned-in performances of surprising depth, unfortunately the story ultimately failed them. Had the show had the strength of its convictions and kept to a tighter, darker, harsher 8 eps it would have been the first high heat to earn a 10/10 from me, but once they fussed with it, it dropped to a solid 8/10.

Could have been great but was overworked. Still if high heat is your thing, this one will not let you down. (YouTube)

Between Us

8/10

Featuring the hugely popular side characters from 2019′s Until We Meet Again, Win Team (played by Studio Wabi Sabi's most popular, and commercially viable, pair BounPrem - Long Khong, You Never Eat Alone, Seven Project, Even Sun), adaptation of the y-novel Hemp Rope.

It’s a serviceable series about hot swimmers flirting and dealing with family drama in a sweetly earnest manner, but ultimately it squanders the talent in play. I would’ve preferred a cleaner narrative arc, less angst and more plot, fewer couples, and a shorter series.

That said, there’s nothing objectively wrong, sub-standard, or off-putting about this show. And it has lots of consent and other good qualities.

Charlotte King Couple's Hc's

Gives nose/forehead kisses

You. Charlotte can be soft, but it’s much more in private, at home, or late night or early morning before she’s really awake enough to realize what’s happening. It’s in the moments that she feels safe enough to let her guard down. So you’re the one who will leave a kiss on the tip of her nose before saying goodbye in her office at the hospital or practice. One that she’ll scrunch her nose at and make a grumbling noise of distaste when you know that she actually really does love it.

Gets jealous the most

It’s a combo of both. Charlotte can be a bit territorial (okay maybe more than a bit) and it expands to multiple aspects of her life. She knows that you’re not going anywhere but doesn’t like seeing other people put their hands on you, and will make it very well known that you’re with her and that’s not changing.

Picks the other up from the bar when they’re too drunk

Charlotte. She doesn’t indulge too much, especially not out of the house. She’ll have a nice class of wine or two with dinner, but her drunk days are reserved for you and only you (and maybe a few members of the practice, but she also doesn’t particularly enjoy being drunk. Tipsy and fun is one thing, but blackout triggers bad memories)

Takes care of on sick days

Okay, hear me out for a second. It’s you. Charlotte may be a brilliant doctor who literally saves lives on the daily basis, but if you’ve just got a common cold, it’s much more of a “big whoop. It’s not pneumonia. Get over it.” Though she’ll probably uber eats you some chicken noodle soup from work later in the day. And you cannot tell me she’s whiny as fuck when she’s sick, and needy af.

Drags the other person into the water on a beach day

This one’s gonna be you. She’d rather just lounge in the sand, getting her sun quota for the week. It’s not that she hates the water, she just has different plans for beach days than you do.

Gives unprompted massages

Charlotte. Like there is no way that this girl’s love languages includes words of affirmation. So she’s gonna be all about physical touch and the others. Whether you’re working from home, cooking dinner, or just on the couch curled up with a book she’ll find a way to snuggle up behind you, working knots out of your shoulders and neck.

Who drives? Who rides shotgun?

I’m trying to remember canon wise how often she drives and I can’t for the life of me remember. I’m gonna say she drives. It’s the big dick energy for me. And she will 1000% roast your playlist choices on longer trips (which is every day because traffic in LA is fucking terrible)

Brings the other lunch at work

You. Whether its at the hospital or the practice, you know she has food available to her, but also is very likely to work through lunch. *especially* when she’s at the hospital you make sure that you pop by, even just to leave the bag of food on her desk. She’s busy running the place, doing surgeries and dealing with god knows what else, she’s gonna forget to eat. And the times that she does actually get to see your smiling face she’ll usually slow down for a minute and enjoy lunch with you.

Has the better parental relationship

Imma go with you. Again, can’t remember but I think there was some problematics with Charlotte. Plus she’s from the deep south so there’s likely some homophobia there and we’re just gonna say that y’all don’t see her parents often. Your family however is completely loving and despite Charlotte being worried about them not liking her, they welcome her with open arms and make her part of your family no matter what.

Tries to start roleplaying in the bedroom

Charlotte. Duh.

It’s not going to happen every time, but when it does it’s because she’s got *quite* the idea and greets you with a sly smirk on her lips when you get home, telling you to get in the bedroom and you’re not going to waste a single moment racing down the hallway.

Embarrassingly drunk dancer

Both of you. But like, not cute dancing together, dancing like you’re at a junior high school dancing bopping along to your fave songs. And like, it’s just downright terrible, in the living room, singing into your drinks. It’s horrible to look at but you both have the time of your lives. Even if the video evidence the next morning makes you want to jump into the ocean never to be seen again.

Still cries watching titanic

Surprisingly (or not), it’s Charlotte. She’s a softie that cries at a l*lot* of movies, which took you for a big surprise when you first got together. Like, girl cries at romantic movies, sad movies, made for kid Disney movies, there’s nothing movie wise she doesn’t cry over.

Firmly believes in couples costumes

You. And she’s firmly against it. She *might* allow you to do something more lowkey just for the cute Instagram photo but it’s coming off right after, she’s not about to go out looking like that.

Breaks the expensive gift rule during Christmas

Charlotte, obviously. Again with the love languages, she adores showering you with gifts all times of year so when it comes time for Christmas and she’s “allowed” to spoil you, she absolutely will.

Makes the other eat breakfast

You. It’s not that she does it intentionally, it’s that she’s not the best morning person. She’ll likely hit snooze a couple of times and then take too long in the shower before rushing to get ready. Luckily, you don’t share this issue, so you always cook something that she can easily take on the go and eat in the car or at the very least once she gets into the practice.

Remembers anniversary

Both of you. Although it wouldn’t be that big of a surprise if Charlotte got stuck working late, anniversaries aren’t necessarily a huge deal to either of you, and you probably don’t even agree on a date. You think it’s when you first started seeing each other, Charlotte thinks it’s when you put a label on it despite nothing changing between those times and neither of you were either seeing other people.

Brings up having kids

Charlotte. BUT, it’s because she absolutely does not want any crotch goblins and wants to make sure that you’re on the same page before it becomes a deal breaker further down the road when you’re both far more invested (obvi this opinion changes in canon, but also, in this sense, we are female and thus cannot accidentally knock her up with triplets. In a wlw situation I do not see Charlotte deciding she wants to be a mom, fun aunt maybe but that’s about it).

now that its been nearly a full day since the last fanfest, i'm just gonna put my thoughts on Dawntrail as a whole out.

Jobs

Viper is cool. I like the idea of another scouting class. I'm a ranged phys main so sharing jewelry with another job is a plus.

The aesthetic of Viper is really really cool. I love the swashbuckler look that the AF gear has. I cannot wait to put Marisol in something similar. The twin blades into a double blade is also very appealing. I used to play Sith Assassin and Jedi Sentinel in SWTOR and its like a marriage of the two.

So in conclusion, Viper is just cool and its gonna be a lot of fun to play. Just like how Reaper is pretty fun to play still.

BUT Pictomancer is just more exciting to me. I LOVE RELM so much. Its been forever since I played VI so I might go do that sometime.

AND THE SPELLS ARE SO CUTE. They look so fake and painterly that I just can't help but fall in love with them. The AF gear is also so cute and I cannot wait to put it on Lily.

Archie is also going to main this class (I had decided that before the reveal, when it was still in the air between green mage and pictomancer.) Its so cheesy and cute and goofy and feels like it would fit my Doctor Who-like character a lot better than the raw powerful Black Mage.

Pictomancer is just gonna be good healthy goofy fun and its the job I'm more looking forward to!

Fem Hrothgar

I'm so so so so happy that they went big and buff over cutesifying Hrothgar. Cause we know they could've and it would've not looked good at all. I'm still not the biggest fan of the dimorphism of Au Ra. (even tho I main one. ^.^;)

My biggest complaint with Fem Hrothgar is that their starter gear looks so much better than all the others. Like the wrist guards! They look sooooo good. (I also really dislike Au Ra starter gear, that doesn't help.) But you can see the new graphic update with them and just their general design feels better than the OG 5. I felt this way a little about male Viera, but I was not super likely to make a male Viera so it didn't matter to me that much.

I don't know if i'm gonna make a Fem Hrothgar... They aren't my style per say, but I'm not gonna keep that door closed. I'm not the biggest fan of more animalistic faces, but that's a personal problem.

All in all, they look fucking fantastic and I'm glad they went the route they did.

Graphic Update

It looks great and its gonna be good when we get it. I'm very glad they actually showed us dark skintones this time too. They all got such a glow up! Can't wait for the gear to follow.

Now give us more character creator options for everyone, and hats for Viera and Hrothgar!!

Tural

The areas look really pleasant, I do like the whole brand new adventure feel. Its a lot better than the feel of the start of the void quests, that kinda had the same feel but got a little dreary once in the void proper. I dunno. Even as a fan of IV the Void Arc was kinda, meh. I like Zero and Golbez as characters, but the rest was kinda whatever. The world lore was also good but eh.

The new zone designs are just breathtaking. I'm the biggest fan of the Western town and South American highland zones. They are just so different from what we have currently it will be great. Solution 9 and the cave zone (that appears to be under it) are.... really fucking cool. Its so far away from what we were expecting I just can't help but be estatic. (And I can take pics of the Linnaeas twins' home shard there. Since I headcannon it as a cyberpunky shard.)

The dungeons all look pretty neat, I like the thunder crystal mountainside the most so far.

Its gonna be a fun story I think, a nice palette cleanser from the heaviness of Endwalker.

The Arcadian

I have no idea what to expect from a raid that is taking place inside a graphics card. By name alone and the fact its in the cyberpunk area does give me good hope. :D

Vanadiel

As I haven't played XI I'm indifferent. It'll be a fun raid and I'm likely going to enjoy the fights, but its just another FF in XIV. Pretty standard tbh. It'll be fun and I'll enjoy the story but there is no anticipation for me.

Ultimate Eden

Its gonna be bonkers and I'm gonna enjoy watching the full fight once its figured out. (I'm not a savage raider lol)

Other Content

The field zone has potential. Since we know nothing else, that's all I've got. I did miss having a field zone in Endwalker tho. It was the perfect place to while away hours working on relics. (let's hope the next relic grind is as tedious as just gather tomes.)

Cosmic Exploration is going to look flashy and great, but I don't do a lot of crafting/gathering so I dunno how much I will enjoy it past its story. Its gonna just be relegated to going there once in a while like Island Sanctuary for me likely.

Deep dungeons are only fun the first time solo and ok with friends later. I've completed both PotD and HoH but my friends still haven't finished EO so....

Hildebrand is Hildebrand. Perfection in humor form.

I will likely enjoy the Variant dungeons, I've enjoyed the first 2 (haven't done the newest cause I was taking a break from the game) and I like the lore that comes with them.

I can't think of anything else really rn but those are my immediate thoughts! Its going to be fun and refreshing and I cannot wait till summer to play it. (tho we must)

Hoo boy ok I'm back to work on Sodor Rehydrated. My brain is doing the metronome meme between Sodor, South Park and Smurf Village rn haha. These three! Iconic af I know /lh. I had a whole caboodle with trying to work out if I wanted to keep Doctor Vic or convert him to mechanic Vic. My answer? Yes. Also tidied up Angel's backstory because oc stuff can get moved around and I had to convert it to humanisation somehow (funny story I also changed her engine class because I didn't like her original surname lmaoooo - I also refuse to call Victor 'Victor Baldwin' bcuz that's just unfortunate so he, like Skiff, keep the surname of his engine class bcuz shut up I said so :3) Also noticed some time ago that both Kevin and Rocky are Ransomes and Rapier cranes, so are they cousins?? Well they are now. Uh ... you'd have to SQUINT to see the family resemblance. Random but I'm reading some satzu and mafia Ryujin and vet Yeji... maybe Ryujin wants to be more involved with her sister and their cats now that she's climbed high enough in the mafia family rankings that they're not struggling financially and Yuna can afford art college.

Yuna decides the first step to becoming more of a family is Ryujin taking up some home responsibilities including vet runs. Ryujin wants to switch vets cause they have enough money for the best of the best but Yuna's like fuck no the babies love it there we can't switch now. Ryujin takes Sarang for his check up, meets Yeji and is like "you know what actually maybe this is the best vet in south korea goddamn"

Cue hijinks and drama cause Ryujin is still in the mafia which means she's got a target on her back.

First scene I thought of was maybe Ryujin involved in a shootout and she barely makes it out. She's really fucked but she can't call Yuna cause Yuna has some important art project performance soon and doesn't want this mafia bullshit to interfere with her sister's life anymore but she also knows if she calls Yeji for help that'll be the last time they can ever see each other. In the end she uses the last of her strength to call Yeji cause she trusts her to be able to administer some first aid before she can go back to HQ and get patched up. She also wants to at least see her the one last time and she knows there's no point in dying now and leaving Yuna all alone.

Also I love the idea of the shin cats being so tsundere with Yeji like the second she's fawning over them they don't give af but when she's in serious doctor mode is when they play and try cuddling her. Especially Dallie always loves to just plop onto Yeji's lap the second she needs to get up and be like "yup this is your life now you can never move again"

Hello Verm! Out of curiosity, for Mulan&ZYX, in all iterations of the college au (Oblivious, Alternate Universe-ity, and RT) what do you think Mulan majors and minors in? What is her friend group like? What kind of crazy shit does she get into with or without ZYX?

gonna answer both in one ask

i didn't read the poem nor was it a story my dad told me as a kid (compared to rotk in the same historical fiction vein), so the only thing i have is the disney movie lol

that 'au' was just a joke - i have no thoughts in having mulan in the college au. she cannot appear in dbd bc she's long dead at that time (the north and south dynasties era is about three centuries behind when dbd is set). she also would not be a cultivator, so there's no interaction there. hm. the only chance would be during imperial court shenanigans, if they were set during the same time period, post-mulan going to war (but then that would also make things weird for the cultivators; we'd never hear the end of how messy things are up in qinghe)

in college, mulan and zyx would share classes and get to know each other there (it has to be some random af class that is for general ed credits). she would not be part of the cucumber/airplane/banana trio. just another friend from a different friend group (mulan has her own social group), in which no one thinks have anything to do with one another (zyx and mulan can team up during beer pong during parties, or random school-hosted events if they spot one another nearby, just "hey get over here" "ok"). people have their own friend groups and that's just a thing, even if you're really good friends with someone

idk what she'd major in - there's not much to go on her likes/dislikes from the movies bc war takes precedence. hm... because she is very filial (to an extent) and family-oriented, likely whatever her parents thought was best for her that she was okay with, she is doing. common diaspora chinese daughter occupation: nursing (at least, that's what a lot of girls i grew up with did if they didn't run off towards liberal arts. or doctor. or dentist. or vet). it's more trouble than its worth to search up exactly how a nursing program works, so i imagine it's liike some amalgam of premed-trade program.

Well if this isn’t the quickest character ref I ever dun shat out. I want to do a better one including the werewolf form buuuut…. I got bitten by a cat and it fucking hurts. No drawing. Boo.

Commence long af Character info dump, quite a long spiel because he is one of the two primary characters.

NAME: Faustus Chandran

AGE: 33

GENDER: Trans man

RACE: Werewolf - technically now a chimera Werewolf/Dragonborn because of unauthorised monoclonal antibody therapy. He doesn’t really have any ‘benefits’ to this previous therapy, other than maybe being a bit more heat proof than the average person. He actually has much worse sense hearing and smell than the average werewolf… but it’s still a whole lot better than a human’s.

He isn’t able to change during a full moon - he used to have a ‘normal’ werewolf form before the therapy which highly resembled a black German shepherd puppy, all floppy ears, gangly limbs and big paws. He was considered to be quite runty though.

His post-therapy ‘werewolf’ form is quite simply just a complete behemoth - about 40 feet in length, 15 feet high and a mouth gape of about 7 foot. So cute. Like a fluffy T-Rex.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: United Kingdom, Yorkshire. (Mother also born in Yorkshire, grandmother born in South India.)

ACCENT: Yorkshire accent, he’ll slow down if someone isn’t able to understand his - at times, extremely fast speaking rate. In all seriousness, his gob outruns his brain. Knows how to speak Hindu fairly well but not quite fluently.

OCCUPATION: World Wide Paranormal Intelligence Agent - junior/mid level. He has only been working at the WWPIA for about 3 years (UK branch). No formal education beyond high school/college. Unfortunately like a lot of humans, going veggie just isn’t economically viable for him… especially with his weirdly fast metabolism. He isn’t that confident in cooking and tends to grab anything when hunger strikes.

BIGGEST SECRET: See werewolf form, if it could be called that anymore. Deep down he kind of blames himself for what he considers a true ‘monster’ of an alternate form. That he somehow deserves not being able to join other werewolves on a full moon. It sounds not that big of a ‘big deal’ but for werewolves its absolutely a huge detriment. Werewolves actually extremely in tune with nature, the moon cycles - the full moon phase is like a renewal of the soul. A time of true freedom. The closest he really gets to that is being with his family, and even then he has to be a bit careful because… well wolves be wolves.

BIGGEST FEAR: Needles, doctors, being strapped down, solitary confinement. Getting ‘stuck’ in his monstrous form.

SCARS/TATTOOS/OTHER PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES: Most prominently thick white bands around his wrists, ankles and neck. Unlike most scars they’re pretty perfectly even without much if any jagged edges. That’s because they’re from silver restraints during his antibody therapy. The long term exposure and stress at that time means they will never truly ‘heal’.

He always wears some form of neck/wrist covering, usually spiked collars.

Faustus is actually the second oldest child out of SIX. (Yep, six!)

His older brother is kind of a judgemental prick and he clashed a lot with Faustus - they don’t really speak to each other now.

His younger brother is an avid scientist and does a lot of oversees research, Faustus loves him a lot but.. doesn’t really get him sometimes. He’ll just nod and act fascinated when the brother rants about… quantum entanglement, quarks and bosons.

Next are his twin sisters who are satan incarnate, kind of the youngest child without actually being the youngest child. Mother dotes on them and they get away with everything. They run a mystery/oddity gallery and swindle absolutely everyone. Especially their siblings.

Youngest is just about 18 and just the embodiment of a golden retriever puppy. He is possibly the sweetest werewolf to roam the planet. He actually is part of a very effective search and rescue team designed to aid those lost on the Yorkshire dales and moors, His sense of smell of hearing are unrivalled. Looking forward to potentially going to university in France. He also would often stay with Faustus on a full moon as opposed to running off in the dales, thereby giving Faustus a lot of comfort.
