Making GIFs load faster
AKA why are some of my GIFs being turned into videos?
Overview
We’re experimenting with serving GIFs as MP4 videos instead of GIFV (which typically serves animated WebP) on the web to a small subset of folks on Tumblr, not everyone. This does not affect anyone using the mobile apps.
The performance improvements from using MP4s in this way are huge, and will make Tumblr load animated images faster and use less data in almost every circumstance, with no discernible loss in quality.
This conversion only applies to specific types of GIFs, such as ones without transparency in the first frame. We’ve tested this conversion on thousands of GIFs, and we’re still tuning it to be virtually indistinguishable from the original GIF.
XKit’s “Vanilla Videos” extension was causing a bug with this experiment, but a recent new XKit version release has fixed that issue.
If you’re served an MP4 instead of a GIF, clicking on the image will still open it in a lightbox, which you can download as GIFV or GIF, depending on what’s served.
Since this is still just an experiment, there is no way to opt-out yet; adding some kind of opt-out (on the creator and/or consumer side) is a possibility though.
If you’re served a GIF as MP4 and it looks wrong, please contact Support with a link to the image and what looks wrong about the conversion. We need examples to help us improve the experience. Also, please do not send duplicate support requests.
What
As a recent Changes post mentioned, we’re experimenting with transforming GIFs into MP4s on the dashboard on web. Our goal is to get GIFs onto dashboards as fast as possible, while retaining as much of the original quality as possible.
For years now, we’ve delivered GIFs using our GIFV format, which transparently transcodes GIFs to more modern formats, like WebP, supported by the <img> tag. We’ve made improvements to that process over the past year, better supporting large GIFs and increasing the quality of the transformation, but conversion to WebP has limited benefits. A typical conversion only halves the file size and animated WebP isn’t well supported by Safari. Meanwhile, MP4 conversions offer even smaller files, often 8 to 10x smaller than the original GIF, as well as faster loading times and broader browser support.
We’re being picky about which GIFs get converted to MP4. We only apply the transformation to GIFs that pass our criteria for transformation. Currently, that means GIFs that don’t use transparency in the first frame, have constant frame rates, and are under 10 seconds long.
We’ve tested this new process against thousands of GIFs from Tumblr, ranging from your typical TV show gifset to pixel art to animated text, and are confident the transformation looks good for the vast majority of content. However, we’re still tweaking the algorithm and are open to feedback. This is a subjective process, and if you see an MP4 that looks worse than the GIF, please send it our way!
Currently, the change only affects the experience within Tumblr (www.tumblr.com). The blog network (i.e. your-blog.tumblr.com) is not affected and continues to use GIFV to deliver GIFs.
Why are we doing this?
As mentioned above, GIFs are almost always inefficient compared to modern formats. They’re larger in size, take longer to load, are slower to render, and use more cache space. Whereas our GIFV conversion usually halves the size, the new GIF->MP4 conversion is often 8 to 10 times smaller for film- or TV-like content. We have a lot of that kind of content on Tumblr (go check out #filmedit or #moviegifs) and delivering the content as MP4 makes those tag pages load quite a bit faster, especially on slower connections.
As an example, here’s an original GIF that’s 3.4 megabytes. Converting it to webp using GIFV gets us down to 2.3 MB, 68% of the original. But converting it to MP4, gets us down to 641K, 19% the size of the original and 5x faster to load. On tag and search pages, where we often show many many GIFs at the same time, this makes a huge difference in the loading and browsing experience.
However, Creators on Tumblr regularly churn out hand-tuned, pain-stakingly optimized GIFs that really take advantage of the format. We really don’t want to make these look bad – they’re works of art, and they’re natively better than these modern competing formats. For now, since this is still just an experiment, we haven’t determined yet how we’ll handle the ability to opt-out of this change (for creators and/or consumers of GIFs), but we have it in mind.
In the meantime, if you’d like to download the actual GIF version of any GIF, just replace the extension on the image url with .gif. So https://64.media.tumblr.com/af554ca5b0e60d313e40c8c47e13824b/d422d5f60551ce04-12/s2048x3072/4b5293df9726acfe461f7eaf661f92acd060dd21.mp4 becomes https://64.media.tumblr.com/af554ca5b0e60d313e40c8c47e13824b/d422d5f60551ce04-12/s2048x3072/4b5293df9726acfe461f7eaf661f92acd060dd21.gif
When
We’re rolling out this change on the web in phases over the next month. We’re currently only analyzing newly uploaded GIFs, so existing GIFs won’t be affected for a while. And it’s only rolled out to a percentage of users, so you may or may not see the feature yet today.
Guidelines for GIF creators
Reporting bad conversions
If you found a poor quality conversion on one of your GIFs, we’d love to hear about it. Please contact Support with the URL of the post and let us know which GIFs could be better. Please include what aspect of the transformation is problematic.
How can I preview what my GIF will look like after the transformation?
If you want to see how any GIF would look converted to MP4, just find the media URL for the GIF and replace the extension in the URL from gif or gifv to mp4. This works for any GIF on Tumblr, not just the GIFs that we’ve flagged as good candidates, so that we can see what the results could be like.
As a GIF creator, how can I opt-out?
For the moment, adding a single transparent pixel to the first frame of the GIF will opt that image out of conversion to MP4. It will not opt you out of conversion to WebP or other formats that our GIFV implementation may support. We’re still thinking through what another kind of creator and/or consumer opt-out could look like.
That said, we would love to hear from you! So please send in anything that looks wrong. Also, keep an eye on the Changes blog for more updates about this.

are you more or less likely to like the percy jackson show if you have adhd?
TL;DR at the bottom
this whole idea came about because i was seeing people complain about the pacing of the show and i was so confused because i thought the pacing was perfect and then i thought maybe it's because i have adhd and so of course i would think the pacing was great and so i ran a poll to look at the results and here are those results
important things to note
a) i have adhd (diagnosed)
b) i study a stem degree
ok here we go
short answer
statistically no, but i disagree (i'll get to it)
longer answer
i did a poll comparing if you have adhd and if you like the show, these were the results (and here so you can see how i wanted people to answer)
Tumblr media
(yes i voted, my opinion also counts)(and yes, there are flaws in the design but i only had 12 options and this was mainly about adhd)
and idk about you but looking at those numbers i can see a few things
number 1: most people like the show, 87.8% in fact
and if you take out the people that didn't care, it's 92.9% of people who did care aka a lot
quick stats rundown
for everyone with adhd (thats the first 6 options) 3% didn't like the show
for those with other neurodiversities and not adhd, it was 12%
yeah, thats 4 times higher (it works out at a whole 2 people but again, limits of the poll)
ANYWAY, i ran some statistical tests (don't stress, i don't understand them either, i will not be focussing on them)
first, chi squared (compares expected values for each option with the actual values i got)
Tumblr media
yeah that number is small, like very small, like 2.8 quintillionths
but i ran it in R and got a very different number
Tumblr media
and oh lookie here that's a p-value about 0.05 and so we must accept the null hypothesis (basically that yeah, that's expected)
which makes NO SENSE but whatever, the computer tells me it's that
enough of chi-squared, i also ran a z-test (i googled what to do and apparently this was the right test, idk what it does ngl)
Tumblr media
i didn't run this one in R bc i have no idea how to do that
but the p-value is again, about 0.05 and so accept that there is no significant difference
BUT I DISAGREE
ok i don't disagree with the stats but i disagree that there isn't a difference
it doesn't take a genius to see the difference
3% of people with adhd didn't like the show but 12% of other nd's did like-
come on that has to mean something
so i ran a chi squared test on just the adhd data and...
Tumblr media
1.9 octillionths
wha-
so did it in R and got a warning saying it probably wasn't accurate (it's probably the 0) so i ran fishers exact test (idk man thats what i was told to run by the internet) and got this...
Tumblr media
so errrrrr yeah
apparently the same goes for the adhd data to which i can kind of get but also dont when
0.6% of people didn't like the show and were diagnosed as an adult but 1.2% didn't like the show and were self-diagnosed, with almost the same number of votes (it works out as a 1 person difference)
and no one who was diagnosed as a child disliked it like WHAT?!?!?!
also no neurotypicals disliked it, love y'all for that /gen
idk, i think the sample size is too small to run accurate tests, that or im doing it wrong which is a very high probability
so whilst statistically, the answer is no, i'm seeing a pattern emerge
but i am a scientist so i cannot say yes or no which SUCKS bc i see a pattern and i want to know MORE but tumblr doesn't have a great mechanism for polls so i can't ask all the questions i want to
TL;DR
the stats say there's no significant difference and so i must concur even if i don't want to
the show was amazing and i'm very excited for season 2 for reasons i don't want to spoil for people who haven't read the book (but go read the books they are just as good)

Limits of the Poselist - Some Thoughts
A contribution to the conversation with @greenplumbboblover under this post.
I definitely see that the way it is, it's not possible to have large numbers of posepacks installed and still use the list. I avoid this by putting in only those I need (I explained my system here). It would definitely be cool to have more sorting and viewing features, but some limits came to my mind:
Entry Size
While thumbnails are limited to 60x60px, long descriptions can actually enlarge the poselist entries. There is a limit though: I actually put in more blind-text than is displayed here. The problem with this is that it sets the standard for ALL poselist entries. This makes the list even longer to scroll. I wouldn't mind so much if only the entry with the long description was enlarged. This is also my main concern with bigger thumbnails. What's shown here would be roughly the space needed for 100x100px.
Tumblr media
Thumbnail Size
It is possible to put thumbnail images larger than 60x60px into a posepack, but the list will display them as 60x60 anyway. However, the images doesn't get "softened" in resizing, which creates very hard edges and makes especially faces harder to read for the viewer. If they aren't square, the list will also distort them.
(I tried to capture this, but taking screenshots and uploading them to tumblr took away a lot of quality anyway)
Here I replaced 1a with a full-resolution image, and left 1b at 60x60px. What looks crisper in the screenshot is actually rather crunchy in game. You can see how the pixels jumped around in the standing man's face.
Tumblr media
I also replaced 2m (at the bottom) with a 100x100px image. This might be a good compromise resolution. Some creators have used this in the past and it is easier to view in S3pe, while still looking good in 60x60. However, it would make the entries larger (see above). A technical problem about larger thumbnails would also be that thousands of posepacks were already made with 60x60 thumbnails.
In the screenshot below, I inserted a full-resolution image for pose 4c. Again I apologize for rambling about something that can't really be captured, but the auto-resize does eat the facial features. By comparison, I always tried to put as much information as clearly as possible into 60x60px. It can be done, but is is a bit of an artistic challenge.

GIF MAKING IN PS
i've never done anything like this before so hope it makes some kind of sense.
so before you get into making gifs first thing so will need is some sort of editing software (i use ps 2022) and some raws obviously. most of the shows i gif are on yt so its pretty easy to get them and you can use any kind of yt to mp4 converter.
so once you have all of this i guess we can get started!!! on a daily basis i do not follow all these steps because you can easily turn them into actions on ps, which means that it would take just seconds. so although it may look lengthy its pretty simple
Tumblr media
the first step to making gifs is importing the raws. you first want to go to file>import>video frames to layer. this will open up your file explorer from where you can choose your desired file. you may want to make sure your file isn't an mkv one but an mp4 before you do this. also if your raws are large, perhaps a whole episode or longer than 30 minutes, it might help to trim it down beforehand to make it easier to work with.
Tumblr media
once you select your file, this window will open up. here, you can move the sliders to select the exact part of the clip you want for your gifs. (when files are larger, it would be more difficult to capture smaller parts of the clip using the sliders) although optional, selecting the limit to every 'x' frames will help reduce the size of your gifs while not making it look too choppy. i do 'every 2 frames' for regular scenes and leave it unchecked for anything in slow-mo. more than 2 usually makes the entire thing look sped up and choppy so i wouldn't recommend it. although it depends on the raws ideally you want something around 80 frames for one gif.
Tumblr media
once you press okay on the above step, your workspace will open up and from here we can start making the gif. the first step would be to set the time delay. this is two ensure that the gif doesn't look sped up. for this you want to first select all the frames as shown above.
Tumblr media
next, you can click on the downward arrow on any frame to change the time delay. i usually prefer 0.07s which you can set in other...
Tumblr media
once you've set the time delay, you have to convert the frames into timeline as shown above.
Tumblr media
now that you have your timeline as seen on the left side, all you have to do is convert everything into a smart object. for that you have to first select all the layers using the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+A and then right-click on the layers followed by convert to smart object
Tumblr media
now you can see that the many layers have been converted into one layer making it easier to work with. the next step is to resize the gif. the original dimensions would make the gifs too large to fit tumblr's size limit, this can be done by going to image>canvas size
Tumblr media
to ensure that tumblr does unnecessarily crop your gifs you want to make sure width is always 540px if there's going to be only one gif in a row. the height can be anything depending how you want your gif to look.
Tumblr media
you can adjust the gif onto the new canvas using Ctrl+T to transform the layer. always ensure the height and width are linked to make sure you don't squeeze the image weirdly.
Tumblr media
after resizing the gif, i next sharpen the gif (which is my least favourite part). you can sharpen by going to filter>sharpen>smart sharpen while the noise filter is in filter>noise>add noise
Tumblr media
although i don't always stick to the same sharpening, these are the settings i use the most.
Tumblr media
once i'm done with the sharpening i like to soften the first smart sharpen filter. for this i change the blending option of the first filter to 80%. this is entirely optional.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
once sharpening is done, you can colour and edit however you like using any of the adjustment layers. i mostly prefer curves and selective colour. these are the curves i used for this particular gif to remove the purple/redness it had going on. in RGB mode the white slider adds brightness and the grey one darkness/contrast. then you can individually use the red, green and blue modes to adjust the colours. i only used selective colour here to adjust the skin tones a bit so i haven't added that.
Tumblr media
once done with colouring all you have to do is export the gif from file>export>save for web (legacy)
Tumblr media
in the last window you have to make sure your looping is forever and that your gif is below 9.5MB. although tumblr says max gif size is 10MB, at least for me nothing over 9.5MB uploads.
Tumblr media
and THAT'S IT (i say after a whole one page essay) your gif is ready!!! honestly i don't know if this is the easiest or most convenient method but this is just how i do it. also i use actions for everything other than colouring so it isn't as time consuming as it looks. you can also set shortcuts for importing and exporting to save time. this can be done from edit>keyboard shortcuts
since you made it to the end here is an extra bit on captioning
Tumblr media
you want to start with a normal text layer and center it at the bottom of the gif. i use arial bold italic in size 16. next to make it look better we can add an outline and shadow to it through the layer style. and you can open up this window either by clicking the fx option at the bottom right or double-clicking the text layer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
these are the settings i use for the stroke as well as the shadow
now it is ACTUALLY the end!!!

Project RBH Devlog 0020
You know, this game has a lot of bullets in it. Like, a lot. And explosions. And those rings of bullets. What I’m saying is, there’s a lot of things that can hurt you moving across the entire screen at once and that’s only going to get worse as development continues. The player has zero defensive options besides physically moving, and no way to recover health except for a single powerup based on random chance.
So I added in a way to dodge.
Tumblr media
(For some reason, this GIF is bigger than any of my other ones so I had to tweak it a bit for Tumblr to handle. As such it looks better on my Patreon. Apologies for the inconvenience)
Dodging itself is actually pretty simple: it takes the direction you’re currently moving and moves you that direction at four times your base movement speed. The trick is making sure that you’re invincible while doing this action. Luckily, the easiest way to implement the dodge input solved this issue for me. I turned the player code into a state machine.
A state machine is very straightforward, really. Instead of having all of the player movement and damage handling and attacking code in the player object itself, I turned that all into a function that the player object calls. The dodge input switches over to a different function instead, the one that makes you go fast. Doing this also means that the player movement controls and attack code stop working during the dodge. More importantly, so does the code that makes the player take damage. End result is a functional dodge action.
The particle effect is a little trickier. It’s not technically a particle system that GameMaker has built into the engine, much like the damage numbers that I discussed in the previous DevLog. It’s an object that I repeatedly create during the dodge action. The object itself decreases in opacity, fading away quickly and deleting itself once it’s entirely invisible. The color also shifts over time, rapidly changing from that reddish-purple to a sky blue as it fades. While the code itself was simple enough, the specific numbers that I needed in order to achieve the effect that I wanted took some trial and error.
Oh and then I found another game breaking bug that I wasn’t aware of, because my work is never finished. You might recall the status effects that I added a while back? It turns out that if an enemy has multiple status effects applied to them, when one of those statuses runs out, the game crashes. It turns out the fix for this was as easy as a single line of code once I realized what the problem was. The For loop that runs to make the effects of each status work sets its size by how many status effects currently apply to the enemy. This number, the ‘length’ of the array, is never changed, even if the actual length of the array does. As a result, when a status runs out, the For loop attempts to run code that no longer exists and freaks out. So all I had to do was reset the ‘length’ variable within the For loop and the problem was resolved.
I’ve still got so much ahead of me, and I’m not totally sure what I want to tackle next. I need way more powerups, but to get more powerups I need to expand the current placeholder powerup section system so that it can display the description of each upgrade. I also need a few more status effects. I’m pretty sure there’s a bug in the code that limits how many times any given upgrade appears, and I need to make sure that’s resetting correctly when the player dies. The enemies spawn in pretty much every room with no regards for the player. There’s nothing to find in the dungeon except the exit. And the enemy AI is about as simplistic as it’s possible to be.
Ah well. My work is never finished.
Until next Devlog!

Headcanon time because my tag paragraphs get shorted to nada and I didn't realize
Okay I'm a dumbass and didn't ever realize or notice that tumblr has a tag cap, because at least to my knowledge it does not tell you that you've hit a limit. So I shall rant about a kinda dumb headcanon I have for the states.
Warning: This bitch is longer than I thought it would be, you have been warned!!
ALRIGHT SO. The way I tend to draw the height for states is based off of two things, their state size and vibes, this is however excluded for the OG13 and then some.
This rule-ish not applying to them is because they all have actual families. Now you may be thinking "What the hell does that mean" and I am so glad you asked.
I haven't really talked about outside of the headcanon things but both New Jersey and New York have families, NJ his moms and technically the devil from the bible, NY his grandparents.
This also goes for the rest of the OG13, they all have families that while those who raised them aren't around anymore that family line still is. This is to the exception of Maryland because he is somehow even farther from being human than states normally are.
Anyway because of this, the OG13 heights are not based in state size, instead it is technically a strange mix between family genes and land size, only technically because those like Mass and Virginia are both taller(mass) and shorter(ginny) than one would assume based on state size. It's basically a ruelette on whether or not you get genes over state size and somehow Rhode STILL managed to be short as hell, bro rolled wrong TWICE XD.
Now it should be interesting to note that it's pretty much only the OG13 that have weird height despite the few other states who have family are locked to their state size. This would include Texas, Louisiana, both the Dakotas, Utah, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Minnesota Wisconsin and Michigan- I see these three at least somewhat related in some way shape or form so thats why they are together like that.
So despite states out side of the OG13 having actual human families they are related to, it's only the OG13 that aren't state size locked and there could be some reasons for this.
For one it could be that colonies more or less aren't locked to their size, mainly because colonies can mix and it's shown quite a lot in history that there were no firm lines between colonies. So it would make sense that when the states (then colonies) were growing up they weren't locked to the size of the colony and rather just their family genes.
It could also be that because they were already adult age (or close to it) it was too far for weird border magic to effect them since they were too old and such. This would make sense and work well with this idea that the other states with families outside of the OG13 are sized locked because their borders were a lot clearer by the time they were older.
Another reason could be because they all have families, which yes doesn't make much sense but here me out. All of them excluding NJ and Maryland had normal human families, it could be that because they had families they were only labeled as personified states once the country became a country. This doesn't mean that they weren't already personifications, just that you have to be labeled a state for border size to take effect, however once again since they were all already adults or almost adults, it wouldn't take effect.
And the final reason I can think of could just be that they were a special case, considering the fact that (if I'm remembering correctly) there aren't personification of the Canadian provinces in canon. It very well could be that yes normally states whether they have family or not are state sized locked, but since they would have been a special case in that there weren't personification like them before that the magic creating state personifications was newly born and didn't have rules yet. This would also explain why they would have families to begin with, the magic had to pick those who lived there to be those personifications, meaning they originally human. The only real problem with this one is the fact that states outside of them have families, however this could be explained, it could have been a lack of people in the area to build a personification from, it also could have been in the southern states case that because family is pretty important there, it made sense to chose those from families instead while still keeping the rules in place.
Now this is a whole lot and it kind of sounds like I've gone insane thinking about this but honestly this is mainly just me typing before I think lol. Is it clear that I needed a reason as to why some states are not close to their state size, because I feel like it is.
I do want to say that the states do have some control over their height, Texas could get taller but it would feel wrong and that goes for most already tall states, it's vice versa for the smaller states who may already be at their height cap by default. I'm not super sure if the OG13 should be able to change their height slightly, mainly because they are all more human to an extent than the other states, of course ignoring whatever the hell Mary is and the fact that NJ is related to the devil from the bible because lord knows those two are not as close (or close at all in Mary's case) to being human like their fellow states with families.
Now height isn't super important but I feel it can explain some dynamics people may have. If you have a tall friend and a short friend, theres gonna be a lot of short jokes. Two short friends and it's a whole lot of complaining about not being able to reach anything. Two tall friends and it's either complaining about feeling claustrophobic in lower ceilings or feeling like your god because your taller than everyone. Two friends of the exact same height and it will always be a competition to see who is truly taller (it's neither but their in denial).
You have to think about these things when making characters because it can effect the dynamic, obviously not by much but still, it's important to know. So while this might seem like far to much thinking when it's literally just a funny internet series that was the only way you knew the news during covid, I find it important. Sure I may never actually write a proper fic and I will probably really only stick to my funny lil drawings, it feels important.
My drawings are like snippets to what happens in the day to day crazy-ness in either the Statehouse or just with the states, thus it is important to me that I have their heights to how I have my headcanons set up when drawing. It's small details like that, that convey a story when drawing without doing an actual comic, it brings life when I know my drawings can be a little stiff, it's about the story and maybe that's just the writer within me talking but I don't care XD.
Basically I just like having some sort of reason as to why the heights for the OG13 aren't consistent with their state size when I draw them. What can I say, I'm a dork :D.

Hi, I absolutely love your store shifter au and it gave me so much brainrot!! I’m borrowing a friend’s account for the moment because I can’t have a tumblr. Anyhow, I just wanted you to say that even if I can’t interact, I absolutely love all your ideas!!! If I understood the lore right, I would assume George is Sapnap’s younger brother and whatever traumatizing experience caused Sapnap to shift also took George away from Dream when they were young. Will Dream and George ever meet in person and if they met as tinies, would George realize it was Dream and what would he think of Dream having the pendant/braid? How would Tommy learn Dream was a shifter, and if one of them was tiny when that happened how would they deal with/would there be a language barrier? And how does Dream learn to shift back? This is much longer than intended, sorry. Feel free to answer parts of it or none of it, I just wanted you to know you’re wonderful!! And if this ask isn’t long enough, then here’s some writing prompts -a friendly admirer
“I can’t believe it.”
“What?”
“My clothes. They just look so, so…”
“Yeah. Hard to believe we even fit that size, right?”
“It’s crazy.”
xxxxxx
"Wow"
"What?"
"Nothing... I'm just not used to
seeing you from this angle.”
"Yeah, I guess it's usually the
other way around.”
This is literally one of the most personal asks I’ve ever gotten solely for the fact that how you described being on tumblr is exactly how I was
I wasn’t allowed on tumblr, so i’d wait till everyone in my house was asleep and then pull out my middle school ipod as a burner device, look at g/t posts for an hour or so, then delete the google tabs i’d pulled them up on and fully shut down the ipod and hide it.
I lurked in this specific community for about a year, then lurked with an account so i could send asks for about another half year until i caved and got the app without parental permission lol (my dad had seen how tumblr was before the bad bots started to get banned so he honest to god thought this was one of those kinda sites but hes chill now)
suffice to say i completely know where you’re coming from and I love you for it 💖
Even if you can’t like my posts or have an account, just coming on here and saying you like my content is so awesome and it absolutely means the world to me 💕✨💖
As for you’re thoughts on the lore (and thank you for sending so many questions I love when this happens):
You’re getting close >:)
Sapnap doesn’t have any siblings, but as I’ve mentioned before (i think), Quackity does! And the event that sparked Sapnap’s shifting was similar to what got George taken in the first place (which could definitely be a reason that it was distressing enough to cause him to shift 👀), just on a larger scale and at different times. George was gone well before Sapnap became a shifter.
As for more on George, i’ll limit myself to what I can say cause there’s so much I want to write for him. At some point it’s my goal to write a story for him as a sort of interlude of the “dream shifted for the first time” story (there will be more parts! I’m working on them! Ngl this ask kinda made me realize how much I wanted to finish the second part of that) and have him fully explained there.
But I can tell you that Dream and George will meet in person! I can’t tell you if Dream will be tiny when they meet, cause you don’t even know for sure what species George is yet, but i promise the boys will meet! Will George know it’s Dream when they meet and vice versa? Who knows! That’s for me to know and you all to find out later >:)
Tommy won’t learn Dream is a shifter for a while, since Dream is stuck at the store. It also takes a bit of time for a new shifter to shift back to their normal size, since they’ve been repressing their capabilities for so long, their body has to stay at the opposite size to get used to it initially. Dream will be able to shift back at some point, but not without some help :)
And now that you mention it, there definitely could be a language barrier, and that could make things really interesting 👀 (im imagining Tommy seeing Dream tiny for the first time at a loss for words and Dream frantically trying to explain what he is but obviously Tommy already knows, so Tommy starts talking about being a shifter himself and he can’t hear Dream’s absolute shock and confusion at this information and can answer none of his questions)
And the writing prompts, YES, i am IN LOVE WITH THEM
If i don’t write specific things for them, they will be put into the next few stories for this au because they are such good ideas oh my word
and as a treat because i loved answering your questions and it made me really happy to get an ask that hit so close to my own experience here’s some miscellaneous Store Shifter drawings from my chorus class, just for you bestie 💖

i have so many of these for so many aus you don’t even know the half of it

I wanna rant about something ed related
All of those people who say "exercise so you are thin not skinny fat" first of all, those of us with a high sw are gonna have loose skin, it's unavoidable when you lose a large amount of weight in a short amount of time. So there's that. Also, skinny "fat" is still skinny, which would be a great improvement for me already. When you're "skinny fat", that's the time to tone and work on your muscle. It's incredibly difficult to weight lift when you're on such a restricted diet. The best thing to do is to focus on getting to your ugw, then slowly working your calories up to maintenance. Once you are consuming your maintenance calories, then start weightlifting to tone your muscles. Of course while losing weight you should be active because it just makes sense, even if it's only a little bit. And if you can lift weights while eating 600 cals a day and fasting for 3 days at a time go right ahead, more power to you. But no one should feel bad because they don't have the energy to weight lift. I know I don't. My exercise is walking and working with kids, which does me just fine when I can handle not binging. I find that extreme workouts make me hungrier, so I don't workout until I drop because it doesn't work for me. Yes we give advice on how to lose weight here, but it is not "one size fits all" as ironic as that is. Don't listen to people who tell you to push yourself beyond your limits. You don't need to lift weights or fast endlessly to lose weight. Calorie deficit and somewhat balanced eating habits will do you just fine.
If you want some advice on how to lose weight, increase your protein intake and reduce empty calories (fast food, white bread, sweets, etc. look up what foods have empty calories for more). Protein keeps you fuller longer and I'm a living example of that. Last night my mom bought me my favorite sugary cereal, and normally I'd have 1, 2 up to 3 large bowls. But instead I made myself a marshmallow protein shake for 160 calories. It both satisfied my need for something sweet and made me so full I couldn't comprehend the idea of having anything else. And for my stoners out there, stick to sativa/sativa dominant hybrids, it will reduce munchies (learned that from another Tumblr user). Never feel bad because you aren't starving the same as the little miss "perfects" who say if you binge you're not valid. Because EVERYONE has binged at some point, especially people with ednos/bulimia/BED. Those are all eating d1sorders. Fun fact, people with ADHD can be more predisposed to binging because food gives dopamine. So find what works for you and stick with it, always learn more about nutrition. Because when you reach your ugw, you shouldn't go lower even though it's hard. Slowly increase to maintenance and increase your activity as well. And for the love of all things unholy work through your trauma, emotional eating is real and without working through stuff it'll be harder to stop binging. This whole thing is trial and error.
Most of this stuff is extremely hard, I know, it's taken me 10 years to learn everything I know and actually put it to use. And I still struggle, but I will never say I'm perfect or put others down because they aren't doing this "right". I can share my knowledge and give safety tips, but I only know what works for me. As a bigger person with an ed who has been told I don't have an eating disorder I know how hard it is out here.
In conclusion, don't tell others how to starve, don't listen to those who try to dictate your eating d1sorder and be as safe as you can. Ultimately it is you who decides how you go about things, when you recover and how you live your life. No one else. I love all of you, without Tumblr I'd have no one to relate to.
Rant over, sorry it's so long. I was affected by people who said there was one way to do this, I felt like a failure for years and no one deserves to feel that way, it's hard enough having an ED, it's unnecessary to add on to people's stress

In-Depth Rules and Point System
Rules
Line artists:
We now require Discord to participate in this event (It's too hard on the mods otherwise).
Line artists may draw anything they want related to Danny Phantom except for sexual content. Let’s keep this event Teen/PG on that front.
If you want to draw gore, that’s totally acceptable, but it will not be assigned to a group and will only be worth bonus points. Please tag with #gore as well as more specific warnings so people aren’t blindsided.
Short, one-page comics will be allowed for this event.
Crossovers are allowed.
The maximum number of submissions will be 5 per artist.
Line art must be inked and have a transparent background layer. If you are unsure how to accomplish this, just ask. We'll help!
Your canvas size must be a minimum of 900 x 900 pixels and must cover at least 70% of the canvas to prevent things from getting too crunchy. Some people like to go ham with detail when they color, so we want to make sure that's possible for them.
Inked background objects/scenes are not required. If you want to submit just characters, that's fine. If you want to submit characters and a background, that's fine. If you want to only submit a background, also fine.
Even if your line art is complicated or has an optional special effect, you can only submit the file type png to the form. This is because the drive has limited space. There is, however, a spot in the form where you can tell colorists that you have those additional files available for anyone that wants to request them directly from you.
Your line art does not have to be made brand-new for the event, you can use a drawing you made before. This event accepts all line art that follows the rules and has not been previously submitted to Green With Envy (it has not appeared in a prior year’s competition).
If we feel we are receiving too much of a specific kind of entry, we reserve the right to stop accepting submissions following that theme. In the event that this occurs, we will put out a notification on both Tumblr and Discord explaining that line artists have 24 hours to submit anything they've already been working on that falls under the mentioned criteria. After that, we will no longer accept entries of that type.
When submitting artwork to the form, you can only submit one entry at a time.
For additional, specific questions about what you can and can't do with line art, please refer to the FAQ, or ask a mod!
Colorists:
We now require Discord to participate in this event (It's too hard on the mods otherwise).
Traditional coloring is also allowed as long as the artist prints off the line art, colors it by hand and re-scans it into the computer. Just please make sure to either use a dedicated scanner or take clear, well-lit pictures when submitting.
Colorists are not allowed to alter line art. The two exceptions to this rule are that the color of the line art can be changed and certain aspects can be changed to achieve special effects. Acceptable alterations are things like blurring (to show camera focus) or transparency (to show intangibility). If you want to do something specific and want to know if it's okay, let us know!
You can't color in a way that looks lineless. You can make the lines less noticeable through color changes, but we have to be able to see the original lines. We don’t want to make line artists feel like we hid their work, because they’re just as important to the event as the colorists!
You can change the amount of canvas space surrounding a line art as long as it doesn’t delete any of the line art. Making the background space appropriate in relation to the line art and your coloring idea is fine. You can crop or increase the canvas size around a line art as long as you don’t resize, delete or cut into the line art itself. For instance, you are not allowed to chop the line art into chunks and move those chunks around the canvas, but adding canvas so that you can create an elaborate background around a character-centered piece is totally fine.
If the line art you are coloring doesn't have a background scene included, and you have something in mind, feel free to make one.
If a piece seems like the coloring on it is too minimal, the artist will be asked to add more. (Half-baked effort just to score points is a no-go—the line artists put in a lot of work, too!)
****Only work that has gone through the official Colorist Submission Form (link incoming) will be worth points! So please make absolute sure that if you are a competitor your artwork is submitted there!
And when submitting artwork to the form, you can only submit one entry at a time.
Points System
Tumblr media
Link to the video tutorial.
Line art that has not been colored before:
Is worth 15 points from the Regular category (if it's your team's assigned line art) and 17 points from the Gore category.
In the event that 2+ colorists gamble on the same, never-before-colored line art, the first to submit to the form will be awarded any bonus points. Everyone else will earn the standard 6 points (unless it is that individual's first time coloring it, in which case 2 bonus points apply, making that particular submission worth 8).
****There is an exception to these rules. See “Poaching” in Special Points/Exceptions.
Line art that has been colored before:
Is worth 6 points. Unless it is your first time coloring it, in which case that specific submission it is worth a bonus 2 points (for a total of 8 points)!
****There is one exception to this. See “Coloring Assigned Line Art” in Special Points/Exceptions.
If you want to submit multiple colorings for the same line art, go for it. Just remember that you only get the bonus 2 points the first time you color that line art, so repeats are worth 6.
Special Points/Exceptions:
Poaching:
Assigned line art can be colored by any team, including teams it was not assigned to. BUT! It is only worth 6 points to opponent teams, whether it’s been colored before or not (unless it is that individual's first time coloring it, in which case the bonus 2 points apply, making that particular submission for them worth 8).
That is, until the event ends~
If another team fails to finish their assigned line arts by the end of the event AND you submitted the first coloring of that line art, then your submission is now worth 20 points for your own team. Congratulations! Your gamble paid off.
Poaching is allowed at any time, but cannot be counted until the event officially ends. For instance, if a team sees you color their assigned lineart early, they can always color that same line art and make sure you don’t get the poacher points. But on the flip side, if you wait too long to color, another opposing team might come along and whisk the prize right out from under your nose! Be crafty and cunning, dear colorist, or your pilfering will come to naught!
Coloring Assigned Line Art:
The first time a team colors one of their own assigned line arts (whether another team has colored it first or not) it is worth 15 points. Once it's been colored by the assigned team, all subsequent colors of that line art are now worth 6 points (unless it is that individual's first time coloring it, in which case 2 bonus points apply to that particular submission, making it worth 8 points).
A team that colors all their assigned line arts will get a bonus 15 points.
There will also be 5 bonus points awarded to any coloring that mods (not participating in the event) deem over-the-top in details and effort.
We will accept recommendations from participants of the event on additional colorings to include, but only if the rec is about another team's submission. A team cannot recommend its own submissions. (Artworks recommended by line artists have no such requirement.)

Quick question, before the next gifset is posted: does the file format I used for the last one (WEBP) actually work, or should I revert to the standard GIF format? Both formats have advantages and disadvantages, such as:
WEBP
Pros: smaller file size means (among other things) that gifs can be longer and don't need to be compressed, potentially improving the picture quality; they may also load faster (I haven't tested that hypothesis).
Cons: Tumblr doesn't play them automatically, so they may be mistaken for static images; they may also be a bit "choppy" when they do play (though that might be my dicey wi-fi).
GIF
Pros: play automatically and possibly more smoothly; can definitely be used by others.
Cons: larger file size limits gifs to about four seconds, even with file compression, which may reduce the picture quality, and might increase loading time.

Have all stories posted by now, or are we still waiting for one? ... Does that mean no more STAB now? Noooo!
My darling stabber,
Yes, all entries how now been posted. Before you despair, however, navigate to the MASTERLIST to see if there are any entries you missed! There should be plenty there to tide you over for a little while longer.
The response was amazing, seriously. For the inaugural DEANCAS STABFEST (FUN-SIZED) there were 32 teams creating art and fic. That means 32 art pieces (plus some banners!) and our participants wrote 183,643 words. Fifty stickers were awarded.
(Keep an eye out in the next couple of days for STABFEST WRAPPED for more stats.)
(Have some feedback for the fest? Notes on logistical problems? We will be sending out a survey by email, so we can make next year's StabFest EVEN BETTER.)
Please give the authors and artists some love in the form of comments and reblogs (or travel to their houses and kiss them idk. or stab them gentlelike. however you show affection.*)
* for legal purposes this is a joke
Again, here is the link to the masterlist, which is actually in two parts because our stabbers broke Tumblr's link and character limits:

KNOWING YOUR PARTNER WELL CAN POTENTIALLY MAKE WRITING TOGETHER A LOT EASIER. REPOST DO NOT REBLOG !!
Tumblr media
NAME:  Lena ♥
PRONOUNS: she/they ♥
PREFERENCE OF COMMUNICATION: Generally I’d say Discord, because my brain has difficulty computing with IMs due to the small window size, BUT fair warning, I’m aggressively slow
NAME OF MUSE(s): I feel like this question is targeted against multimuses lmao, LET ME- Patrick, Zhìjiàn, Eunjae, Domenico, Karube, Seona, Yihwa, Chén, Ajay, Shin, Nathaniel, Doe, Anauel, Titus, Yoshino, Hyun, Miyoung, Samuel, Chulsoo, Nuntius, Diana, Kaeden, Sabriel, Lotte, Han, Sarang, Yeonghon, Ajit, Thanh, Soleiel, Fabian, Sköll, Jung-sik, Seok-ju, Rang, Es, AND some future new additions/revamps Cesare, Michael, Anton, Julian, and Taejoo ♥ God I hope I didn’t forget anyone, that’d be embarrassing-
RP EXPERIENCE/HOW LONG (MONTHS / YEARS?): Now thinking back on it, I was rping with my desk neighbour (how do you call this-) way back in middle school oh my god-- so, like, since 2013? Can I get away with not doing maths--
PLATFORMS YOU’VE USED: Tumblr and Discord, but Discord doesn’t really do it for me too much--
BEST EXPERIENCE: Oh man, definitely right now, it just keeps getting better, which I hadn’t thought possible? I’m surrounded by super wonderful chill people whom I feel safe to just vibe around, I’m loosening my choke-hold on myself, I enjoy the muses I have and what I get to write, I am OBSESSED with my rp partner’s muses, I’m having a wonderful time rn~
RP PET PEEVES/DEALBREAKERS: Frankly, I usually struggle figuring out what fits into this category/categories, but I think as a dealbreaker, time limitations? If you’d like to drop a thread after I’ve been taking a hot moment to reply to it, YES that’s your right and just and fair and I welcome it, but I can’t rp with time constrictions that only put more pressure~ That’s the biggest one I can think of~
MUSE PREFERENCES
FLUFF, ANGST OR SMUT: I always thought it was angst, but truth is, I just really like? Thoughtful development? I like to see relationships grow and the characters through them, I enjoy watching the way two characters play off each other and whichever genre will give me this, will give me characters being challenged in their given developmental stages, is the One™ (also, can I get fluff and angst as a mixture?)
PLOTS OR MEMES: Generally, plots! But as Ferre said, memes are also great as ice-breakers and kickstarting plots, so I basically agree wholeheartedly with them here~
LONG OR SHORT REPLIES: I have a tendency to shoot for the longer ones but I generally prefer adapting to my partners ;W;
BEST TIME TO WRITE: God I wish I knew~
ARE YOU LIKE YOUR MUSE(S): 120% AGREE WITH FERRE! There’s most definitely some part of us in the characters we write, I also believe we tend to write character traits we have a particular relationship to, whether or not we actually possess that trait, SO YES!

How can I listen to a show without downloading?
Sorry, but Tumblr had a recent change that will not allow a post to play an audio unless it is uploaded either to Tumblr (but the size limit is 10 MB -- too small) or Soundcloud (and the free-user allotment is used up with one Beatlesongs post). Plus, the file-sharing service I use (mediafire.com) does not have a play capability. So, Tumblr no longer allows my posts to play audio.

Hello! I have an announcement that's important for tumblr-only peeps to know as well.
I'm letting everyone know that we've made two small changes to the app! These should be fairly easy to edit in even if you've already began writing. If you've already submitted, don't stress, but please keep reading!
First and foremost, I want to make a small restriction to the defining quotes. There's now a 15 word maximum on the defining quote. This is just because I underestimated how long some of these quotes could be. While they're all very fun and I love reading them even if they're longer, it does make them hard to insert on the roster or into videos, so that's why we're inserting this maximum from now on.
Secondly! We're adding a new feature to the Gacha section of the app. You now have the option to add up to three limited items! These are items that can only be rolled a set number of times, unlike the rest of the items which can be rolled infinitely. These give a lot more opportunity for detailed and specific lore-related items, including personal items that your character would own or recognize. You can choose how many "copies" of these items there will be, from 1 to 5. (On another note, I've also increased the potential size of items from what would be able to fit in a travel suitcase to what would be able to fit in a small closet.)
The blank application has been updated with these new guidelines. If you've already copied it, you can either reference or copy the new guidelines from the blank one.
If you've already submitted an application, you can send us an ask off-anon if you'd like to make changes to either your quote or gacha items! For the gacha, you can either make some of your existing items limited or swap them out with new ones. However, please tell us if you make edits to your app. We've made copies of each of your applications, so if you just edit the document without telling us, we will not see it.
But don't stress about this—these are hardly major requirements, and if you don't make any changes it won't affect your acceptance. Just know that we may reword/shorten your quote for you if you don't, and if you don't have any limited items, we might come to you once the game starts to ask you about them.
That's all for now, good luck writing!
