The dog AU
Eclipse, I was thinking about our talk the other day, about Tsuna, and how lonely he was, and you know what would probably solve that? A dog! A dog would provide some structure to his routine, and socialization, in the form of instructing people how to best interact with his dog, or talking to other people who have dogs while the dogs play, or training, or going to the vet, etc!.
Yes, I know he is canonically afraid of dogs, but it probably won't take much to tweak the backstory. Just give Nana a bit of dog culture.
--
Nana has always had a dog. She had taken her first toddling steps following her family's dog, Sushi. She had diligently helped train her first puppy at the age of ten, and mourned the loss of her beloved Sushi at age thirteen. At age seventeen, she was two years into fostering a rescue dog named Gobi, who still needed a lot of work and socialization before he would be adoptable. Perhaps he wouldn't be. Gobi flinched at loud noises, and sudden movements, and outright disliked smokers. He didn't seem enthused about her boyfriend, but they tolerated each other enough, that she didn't feel as though it would become an issue.
When she got pregnant, she worried that Gobi would not take well to having a baby around, and quietly talked to her aunt about taking Gobi in, if there were problems.
She needn't have worried. While Gobi disliked both loud noises, and sudden movements, he understood Tsuna was her son, and became actively protective about who could be near them. It made walking both of them at the same time, a little difficult, but overall Nana was relieved it had gone so well.
Her husband seemed reassured of her dogs protectiveness, if a little baffled by some aspects of dog culture. But that was alright. Gobi was always good company when her husband went away for work, which was long and frequent.
He never seemed to send the right kind of toys, always noisy, but it worked out fine, as Tsuna seemed to prefer the squeaky toys sent for Gobi, and Gobi prefered the stuffed animals Tsuna seemed to fear so much.
Her Tsuna grew up around dogs, and while he was often startled and a bit scared at first by loud barking, the owners around him were happy to coach him with calming reactions that could settle both of them down.
Walking the dog was a good activity for both Gobi and her Tsuna, as her Tsuna was shy, and interacting with dog owners gave him something to talk about with people. Walking the dog everyday with her, improved his coordination as well, not massively, but enough that it seemed he would be able to run with a dog when he got older. Her Tsuna would have to put in practice, to mitigate his clumsiness, but that would come would come in time.
In the meantime, she took a picture of Tsuna "sneaking" ,Gobi and himself some dog treats out to eat. She wouldn't let it go on too long, of course, but in the meantime he was eating, and it hadn't given either of them indigestion, and made a cute picture to send to her husband in the meantime. It was really cute, and she should send a copy to her parents, as according to her mother's stories, she had done something similar herself, as a child.

Anyone else miss being able to take walks without getting barked at and chased by dogs?
I don’t think there were as many dogs even 20 years ago, and apart from service dogs, I don’t think people were bringing them everywhere.

Feel free to ignore this if it doesn't spark your interest but worth a shot. Can I ask what breed of dog Jesus was in your dog world?
I think dog Jesus predates most of today's dog breeds. Realistically he'd probably be some kind of mutt, probably with vaguely Canaan dog looks. But European depictions of Jesus have always been very localized, and I tend to think that in Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque art he'd usually appear as a Spaniel of sorts, although it varies from piece to piece. Gun dogs more often than not.

When you're screaming your lungs out, because overwhelming fear, because those dogs will not stop barking, and the dogs will not stop barking, perhaps because someone is screaming and they think PREY.

Saturday, February 17.
Villain origin story.
Tumblr is the home of many things. And it is the home, perhaps most famously, of old internet energy. On the subject of fame, and old internet energy, this week saw the anniversary of a myth, a cornerstone in online culture.
It was 14 years ago this week that a Japanese kindergarten teacher posted some innocuous images of her rescue-adopted Shiba to her personal blog. And the rest, as they say, is an image of said Shiba staring sideways, politely, if a little unsettlingly, into the camera.

Maybe the coolest exhibit at the natural history museum in Bern is the one about Saint-Bernard dogs, and more specifically, the Swiss icon Barry!
Tumblr media
Barry is known for having saved 40 people as a rescue dog in the Swiss Alps between 1800 and 1812. He died in 1814 and his body was given to a taxidermist to preserve. The museum had him remounted in 1923, because he didn't really look like he did in life and the museum director thought the dog deserved better. This is what he looked like before:

They no longer needed to use the actual skull for the mount, so now it's on display! They also have a wolf skull (left) and a modern day Saint-Bernard skull (right) to show how much the breed has changed.
There is also a taxidermied modern day Saint-Bernard, a ten year old male that was donated to the museum after he died of natural causes:

Marc Nussbaumer has written the book "Barry vom Grossen St. Bernhard" about the process of restoring Barry, the history and development of the Saint-Bernard, and also the history of the region the breed comes from and their use as working dogs. It's only available in German, but it has a bunch of old art and pictures so it's also nice just to flip through it to look at those. I bought the book at the museum but it can be bought online, though the shipping can get very expensive 🥲

Considering there are multiple million clones, there’s gotta be a fair number of trends and subcultures and even clashes over those differences. Generational ones- older batches being flummoxed and offended by shinies doing it all differently, or clones from the eastern infantry facility changing their names all the time which the clones of the pilot training program generally agree is not how they should do names. And so on
