Beboptober Day 17: Mushroom Hunting

Thanks to @thestarlightsymphony for the prompt list! Catching up from the day I skipped over to do Day 18 (which you can read here)…although even now, I’m still a day behind! Yeah, I’m confused too. But hey, I guess this is the kind of chaos that Ed would embrace!

Ed had never had a best friend before.

She’d read about them plenty, in stories she found and books she downloaded through questionably-legal methods on the Net—the kinds of things she’d tell herself as bedtime stories as she rocked herself to sleep in her little shack on Earth. She’d seen plenty of characters in those stories who had them. And she understood the concept of someone you liked the best in the whole world, with whom you did everything. Someone who got you like no other, who was always by your side—and vice versa.

It sounded nice.

She’d never had one of her own, though. Not at the orphanage, not in her shack, not in her wanderings through the ruins of Earth. She never really knew anybody long enough for them to become a best friend. Maybe her dad had been one for her, long, long ago. She couldn’t remember. (And she wasn’t sure he’d count anyway, at least not yet. In stories, even when best friends left each other, they always came back in the end.)

It wasn’t like it was something Ed was actively seeking out. She appreciated the idea more as an abstract concept, the kind that didn’t apply to her, like romance or death or the taste of chocolate. But, like many concepts that magically seemed to come alive for her after she joined the Bebop crew—the mysterious sparks of tension between some of the grown-ups on the ship; the way Spike would stumble back to the ship after hunts, bruised and bloodied and lucky he was alive; the sweet treats Faye had generously given her (okay, fine, that she’d snuck out of Faye’s secret stash)—the idea of a best friend came alive for her, too when she found one on the Bebop for the first time in her life.

He never left her side. Whatever she did, he followed her loyally. They did everything together, and they went on the craziest adventures. Like, what about that one time when the Bebop had been stranded on Io without food or fuel, after having been the victims of a hit-and-run? The pair had been sent out to find food, but actually came across some mushrooms, which turned out to be bad—and crossed paths with their seller, who had a bounty on his head too!

The two of them became real, live cowboys together that day. They pursued the seller until he agreed to give them a whole bag of mushrooms. And sure, maybe they weren’t the illegal ones that the guy had been selling before (oops)…but now the crew had something tasty to eat!

The duo made the best bounty-hunting partnership in the whole world, Ed was sure. The best friendship in the whole world, too. They had so many adventures like that. So many stories to tell. If only they could tell people all about the mushroom-hunting adventure they’d had! If only people were more willing to listen to what her best friend had to say.

She understood him like no one else seemed to, and he always listened to her, even when she could tell by just his face that he thought her ideas were silly. They played together, napped together, hacked and net-dived together. Ed loved everyone on the Bebop. She never wanted to leave them. But out of all of them, this was the only one, the first one ever, that she could call a best friend.

And so what if her best friend was a dog—a cow-woof-woof—and not an actual human person?

They made the best friends of all.
