The List
(for @steddiemicrofic’s July prompt)
prompt word: pool | wc: 442 | rating: T (cw for suggestive language and minor sacrilegious-ness maybe??)
Steve knows his ‘Make Out Locations’ bucket list is lame. Also knows how much it riles Eddie up (not that it takes very much to rile him up).
“Not again,” Eddie groans into Steve’s mouth. He reaches for the paper, gnashing their teeth enough to cause permanent dental damage.
“Why do you hate it so much?” Steve knows the answer. It’s scribbled between the wrinkles on Eddie’s forehead.
“Cause I know what it’ll say.”
“Do you?”
Eddie hums. “It’ll say you’ve already made out here before. Just like everywhere else in the purgatorial Midwest.”
“Really?”
“Probably with someone named Bimbo VonBreasty.”
Steve snorts at that one. Jealousy laced behind a joke. Eddie’s specialty. “Ah, yes. The VonBreasty’s and I go way back.”
The mood melts again. They ease back into where they left off, tongues tracing lips. Palms pressing hard into each other's necks.
Eddie dips away for a second. “One of these days, I’m gonna find a spot where you haven’t sucked someone’s lips blue.”
It’s a comical idea. Comical, but impossible. Still, Steve is always up for a good laugh.
“Would love to see you try, Munson.”
They drive in Eddie’s van for a few miles. Steve is blindfolded, which should be alarming. Maybe kinky. But this is Eddie, so if anything, it’s for Dramatic Flare.
“It’s cheating if we drive outside of Hawkins.” Steve argues as they exit the van.
“Good thing I only play fair.” Eddie slips behind him, untying the knotted blindfold.
Steve blinks, takes in the open space. Deep and echoey, like a basketball court. Except much more ornate.
“Step down.” Eddie directs.
The scent of stale incense hits Steve’s nose as he takes another step. This time, he shivers at the sensation. The realization:
Water. Shallow water all around his shins.
“Is this the church on Main Street?”
“Not just the church on Main Street.” Eddie replies. “The baptism pool in the church on Main Street.”
Everything is louder here, rippling for ages against the reverb. Steve is so aware of every sound he makes, every movement reflected in the water.
“Hey.” Eddie knocks his knuckles over Steve’s wrist. Loosely catches his fingers. “Never kissed anyone here, have you?”
Steve shakes his head, rethinks his outlook on impossibilities. He wades in closer, keeping their hands connected. “Should we rectify that?”
Eddie nods into the kiss. They rarely kiss this softly, all warm lips and leisure speed. Every breath shared, gentle waves luring them chest to chest.
The list in Steve’s pocket is probably shriveled up, withering away. But it doesn’t matter anymore. Not in this moment.
Anyone before Eddie is just ink on a page.

I really think Joel deserves some comfort, so please #3 and/or #14 from the Grumpy x Sunshine prompts with Joel x male reader, maybe? Perhaps something with him overhearing some conversations between the reader and Ellie...?
#3 - sunshine is babbling happily & grumpy is listening
#14 - grumpy is realizing what a different (and much more pleasant) life it would be if sunshine was by their side all the time
wordcount: 528
-----
“...and so when Outbreak Day happened, I think he got turned as well, but he never got to finish the run and I think that is so upsetting. Plus, I had to leave my collections at home! At home, El, where a clicker is probably eating the pages. I spent so much money on that damn collection.”
“So where was it supposed to lead?”
“I’ll never know! I think he was supposed to get married but I’m not sure.”
“Thought you said he had a girlfriend.”
“Who died, Ellie.”
“Oh yeah, I forgot.”
Joel sat on the far side of the camp, listening to your voices carry over the air. He loved listening to you talk. You could talk his ear off all day and all night and he wouldn’t care because he loved the sound of you.
You’d been a recent partner, after Tess’s demise. He’d come to hate you, stuck in a mindset that you were here to replace her. He quickly realized he was wrong, with how much you moved around and talked. He’d get every single fact about your favorite comics wrong just so your voice could fill the silence. God, he felt like he could pass a trivia game on your favorite character, the way you’d talk about the comics whenever there was nothing else to talk about.
This was really only the second longer trip the two of you were on, after about eight months of joining. You were refreshing to be around, he noticed. It was like you were an extra ray of sunshine outside and in the QZ.
He was leaning up against a tree, arms crossed in front of him with his eyes closed when he heard you and Ellie start talking in hushed voices.
“So you and Joel, huh?”
“What are you thinking about?”
“What?”
“Me and Joel what?”
“You two look at each other like how I imagine people in love look at each other. It’s disgusting.”
“You’re disgusting.”
“You’re telling me you don’t have the slightest crush on grumps?”
“We’re calling him grumps now?”
“Don’t change the subject!”
“Shh!” you say, glancing at Joel, who’s still trying his best to stay awake while looking asleep, “Maybe? I dunno, I guess so.”
“I knew it!” Your hand slaps over her mouth.
“Shut up and go to bed.”
—--
“You got that look on your face, eyebrows scrunched. Can’t tell if you’re thinking or constipated.”
“I’m not con- Jesus, you’re just like the kid.” Joel says.
“My main character trait.”
“Flaw, I’d say.”
“Yet you continue to ask me to accompany you.”
“And if I’d ask you to keep doing so?” He heard your footsteps stop crunching in the gravel.
“Continue? With you? You’re not gonna shoot me to shut up?”
“Nice to have some blab on like you to fill the quiet.”
“If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you have a little crush on me, Miller,” you elbow him in the side, “I’m just kidding.”
He hums, but he knows you’re not wrong. He promises to himself that as soon as this thing blows over, he’s taking you back to Tommy’s place for a real date.

I followed artsangel since her previous comic immaterial. I have to say she IS talented and has the skills. But her style is verrrrry time consuming and she would only update every 2 weeks. I used to study her art a lot because I was always impressed by it, and Im fairly certain it did not look like like that when it was on canvas. I used to see her progresses on her stories and she uses a lot of assets and predrawn faces to keep her consistent pixar look. The faces were less uncanny and more expressive. Now the eyes are all wonky and displaced.
I think she may have used ai to polish her panels. Perhaps the workload proved too much, or maybe she was feeling insecure. I was concerned when she got picked up by webtoon because I could tell it would be difficult for her to keep up the schedule. Ai is super powerful but its not powerful enough to make a COMIC, not even consistently. She probably using it as an enhancer to her already great skills. A shame though, she doesn’t need it.
Also I think the reason her preproduction period was so quick is because she was highly prepared before launch. She already has multiple comics under her belt and webtoon probably didn’t need to change much. Im sure she just reused her canvas comic for her reboot and built a buffer in the meantime.
Having to meet deadlines can definitely be a reason but not an excuse IMO.
One creator I can think of who has a similar style (albeit in black and grey) is figmentforms, creator of A Tale of Two Rulers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Updates are slow, she posts maybe a new page once a month, the art is gorgeous but it's clear it takes her time. It's a free to read comic. It's worth the wait.
That said, if she wanted to make her updates more frequent, I wouldn't blame her at all for utilizing new tools and methods to do so - but it wouldn't justify her in using AI tools that are stealing other people's art.
There are loads of shortcuts that artists already use that are fine because they're still genuinely handcrafted. 3D models, overlay textures, blur effects, etc. are all tools that artists use to help speed up the drawing process and were made by hand.
And beyond that, the need to make the process more efficient isn't a crime, but it's in how you do it. You can use these tools irresponsibly or at the cost of your own comic's quality. Case in point, Lore Olympus and Let's Play, which are both godawful in how they implement 3D backgrounds and stock images:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Creating comics is finding a balance between efficiency and quality, not sacrificing one for the other and using it as justification to avoid criticism for that sacrifice.
If Sarah Ellerton was using AI based on her own art and being honest about it, I don't think anyone would be nearly as upset. It might prompt a debate over what's ethical in the world of comics - whether or not it's right for consumers to pay for a product that's being churned out of an AI prompt - but at least it wouldn't be theft and it would probably just be there as an aid to an artist who's been doing this for 20 years and had to find a way to make the process more efficient. I think AI can be used as a productive tool if it's implemented responsibly and without being at the cost of another artist's work.
The issue is that 1.) Sarah is being VERY suspicious over the whole thing which leads us to believe that she's NOT using ethical AI assistance, and 2.) there's a VERY clear distinction near the end of her previous comic, Immaterial, where you can basically tell when she adopted AI. The main character Alex, for example, literally became a whole other person.
Tumblr media
This is a common problem for AI coloring prompts, a LOT of them are bad at rendering darker skin tones (I think I mentioned this in my last post, but I literally got to playtest AI coloring tools from WT's a couple years ago, and they could NOT figure out darker skin tones, any dark colors that were put down were assumed to be shadows so characters just looked like white characters with the curtains pulled over their face).
She just looks like a SamDoesArts poster girl now. Everything unique about her has been stripped away and you can see this transition in the final page of Immaterial and the first episode of Quantum Entanglement:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
None of it feels like organically her, it feels like a cheap machine reproduction.
I don't doubt that this person has evolved a lot as an artist or that her older work was genuinely her, she's clearly got a lot of skill that only someone who's been drawing comics for years would gain.
But it's clear somewhere along the way she succumbed to insecurity or stopped caring enough to start using AI to do the heavy lifting. I mean honestly, her work from before was fine! So I don't see why she would be using it for 'polishing', there are so many ugly ass webtoons on the platform so even the art from Immaterial - even if she had to simplify it a bit more to make it easier to meet deadlines - would likely be a refreshing change of pace.
But the way she's utilized AI here, I was quicker to assume Sam Yang drew Quantum Entanglement when I first saw it.
And it is a shame, because, as you said, she doesn't need it. Her art is perfectly capable on its own and while I can understand her need to make the process more efficient, there are better ways to do that than using AI that's clearly ripping off other artists and then lying about it. It's a shame she'd put her reputation on the line as a seasoned artist just to meet Webtoons' stupid deadlines. Like, how can it be worth it?

Thinking about what a sweet, kind, silly and gentle hearted person Poe is until you piss him off and once that switch is flipped, he's a force to be reckoned with
Oh, did you mean? my most favorite? facet? of his character? that makes me lose my marbles? and also happens to be maybe my favorite character trope of all time? that? Okay I hope you were expecting an infodump because what-ho! that's what's happening, I have come prepared and with receipts, let's fucking go on how Poe Dameron is a goddamned force of nature and how the galaxy should be really fucking thankful his loyalty is first and foremost to the Resistance and to the Light, because if it wasn't...well, I'd dread to think, but it wouldn't be good for anyone else.
The fun thing for me, is that it has always been a part of Poe's character, right from The Force Awakens -- it's subtle, but it's there, hidden between the sassy quips in the face in danger and the professionality of Commander Dameron; little fleeting moments that tell you that Poe Dameron is not someone to be trifled with at all, including one of his very first scenes:
Tumblr media
I'm 90% certain that Poe's gaze actually lands first on Tekka's body here, before lifting it up to glare at Ren - and that's more than just a defiant glare, that's a look of loathing. Which fits, considering that I do believe the Force Awakens novelization confirms that Poe rushes in without thinking, and acts on sheer anger/rage when he goes to shoot Ren after Ren kills Tekka.
(More lengthy thoughts under the cut, I was not kidding, I saved a dozen images for this).
And that look is far from the only moment in TFA that clearly goes "oh. yeah, Poe can be scary when he wants to be", there's this frankly delightful moment during the trench run when Poe sees a fellow pilot perish while covering him:
Tumblr media
and then moments later, when Poe flies into the heart of Starkiller to destroy the oscillator, we get this shot:
Tumblr media
that's far more than just determination/focus, he's angry. and he has every goddamned right to be - he was just held captive and tortured for (??) days, and this monstrosity just destroyed an entire fucking planetary system, and the very Republic that Poe has spent his entire adult life believing the inherent values of, that he thought could genuinely improve. Never mind the detail that Poe probably likely spent time on the Hosnian System, if he didn't live there temporarily during his time in the Defense Fleet.
But these shots makes it clear where the comic gets the idea from that the First Order might, y'know, actually be. A little bit terrified of Poe Dameron:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's a serious threat, and ruthless when it comes to the First Order. People joke a lot about Poe being reckless, but I don't see a lot of recognition for the fact that he can be ruthless - he sees point b and dives straight at it, and he's absolutely relentless in his determination to take the First Order down.
The quickest possible way to enrage Poe is inaction or injustice. We see this clearly in the Last Jedi, when he believes Holdo is essentially leading them to their deaths and has thrown the Resistance away:
Tumblr media
but we also see it as far back as Before the Awakening by Greg Rucka:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This conversation carries on for a page or so more, I think, with Poe arguing against the New Republic's decision to not act or investigate further (it's also what prompts him into going rogue to investigate on his own, which leads Leia into recruiting him for the Resistance).
And we've even seen it in material as recent as Free Fall, which means this is a character trait Poe has had his entire life:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(these do not paint my girl in a great light but like she's fucked up okay!! and being groomed into taking her mother's place it's fine, it's fine, she's my fucked up little blorbo)
anyway. so this is Poe when he's, probably about 16? 16 going on 17 here, and this is probably the angriest he's ever been considering how shocked he is about the chill in his own voice (which if you were ever curious why I say Poe's anger runs cold, it's because of this scene right here). He's so enraged by the injustice being carried out by Sotin, that he's genuinely - for the first time in the book - considering actually killing someone. And he gets into a screaming match about what the right decision is with Zorii.
(he also gets to punch Sotin later, by the way, if you even care. It's glorious. I love my favorite character who decides murder is okay if said murder is in question a guy who deals in the slave trade)
But also.
My favorite instance of this, ever, which rewrote my fucking goddamned brainchemistry in 2017 when I read it and made me have to step away from my computer and honest to god pace the length of my house to walk it off, is his confrontation with Terex in issue #13 of the Poe comics.
Because you know what?
This entire fucking exchange is personal, and almost/pretty much outright vindictive? Like at this point, Poe has solidly won this round - Terex has finally been defeated, and all Poe has to do is hand him over to the First Order. He knows, in doing so, Terex will likely be killed, and after who knows how long of Terex's bullshit meaning Poe couldn't trust his squadron, and the fact that L'ulo just died - well, Poe's not real broken up about it, which is fun in itself.
But then he asks Malarus if he can have a moment with Terex before he hands him over and Poe....uses that moment to gloat.
Tumblr media
And y'all know me i don't use words like that for Poe but like. he kind of does? he asks a moment alone with terex specifically so that he can taunt Terex that he won, that Terex didn't beat him, and that in trying to take Poe down, Terex cost himself everything (a fact Poe happily rubs in his face), and even adds that "and when I give you to the First Order, I bet they'll take the rest."
So like. Yeah.
Poe knew full well they'd likely kill him, and spends the next few issues full heartedly believing that Terex was dead. And he taunts Terex with it here in this moment. It is TRULY glorious and honestly had 17 year old me's little head spinning because it was such a subversion of what I thought Poe would do -- but he did! He didn't try to figure out a way to spare Terex's life, and he used his final moments with Terex to make sure Terex knew that Poe was fully aware of what the choice he was making meant.
It's fucking DELICIOUS.
And I also love this panel from earlier into the issue:
Tumblr media
Because again, it's a great illustration of how Poe can come off cold because of the art choices Phil Noto made here: look at the jacket. It's zipped up all the way to Poe's neck (a rarity for Poe), and just generally gives him this very closed off, cold appearance because he's at his wit's end in this issue, and he is angry about the circumstances Terex has forced him into.
So...yeah. Poe Dameron is a sweet, compassionate, silly guy who makes the worst fucking puns you've ever heard this side of the galaxy. He loves his droid, wears his mother's wedding ring with the intent to give it to the right partner someday, and loves all of his friends full heartedly and is generally the most tactile, affectionate person you will ever meet. He's pretty much everyone's best friend, because he has that kind of charisma and ability to make anyone feel like they're the most important person in the galaxy.
But Poe Dameron is also the man that the First Order seems genuinely intimidated/afraid of. He's the man that destroyed Starkiller base, and toppled the most powerful crime syndicate in the galaxy when he was just 17 years old. He is not someone you ever, ever want to piss off, because for all his warmth and love, Poe has an anger that runs cold, and when he hates something - it's just like when he loves something, he doesn't go half-way.
General Organa isn't the only Resistance general that can be absolutely terrifying in her own right as much as she can be gentle and loving. It's just that Leia's the only one anyone ever notices, because...well, Poe's silly and funny and usually kind of easy going.
And the fact that people underestimate him is what makes him that much more dangerous.

since sans is of another world, is papyrus from another world too? are they from different worlds but just so happened to end up in the same one, or does papyrus belong to the world of undertale while sans doesn't?
things we know about sans in deltarune:
he has a younger brother, presumably kris' age or not much older considering he's very protective of him and acts like leaving them to hang out alone "in his house" would be irresponsible
that or he's just weird about his adult brother for no discernible reason. which I sincerely hope isn't the case because come on
ironically, while the skelebros house sprite in undertale is named sans' house, the one in deltarune is named "paphouse".
the game value that checks whether you've already talked to sans about his brother in ch1 when you see him again in ch2 is called "paptalk". it's not his full name, but i believe it's safe to assume that sans' as of yet unnamed brother in deltarune is still papyrus.
naming yourself or the vessel after papyrus in the goner maker sequence will get the prompt "an interesting coincidence" and the steam page (i think?) for deltarune says he's "busy" so it's highly lilely he'll play a role in the story.
still, like you said, part of the evidence that sans comes from deltarune is that he dies in a way that's different from every other character in undertale. papyrus included.
something else weird about his death: he's the only character who has color (red blood) in his sprite in the battle screen, which is strictly black and white. this is very obscure and likely means nothing, but there's a weird comment in the undertale crosstitch book about how you can color the battle sprites if you want to diversify things but they "won't be canon". what an interesting thing to say, why would they feel the need to specify that...
thing is, papyrus' death remains much more similar to ye average undertale monster death. so... what's up with that?
papyrus and sans showed up to snowdin one day out of the blue, though it's not explicitly stated, they most definitely got there together.
"where do skeletons come from" is a question posed more than one time, if jokingly, such as by the baby bunny in deltarune
the snowdin residents had never seen them around before. which can also mean absolutely nothing, because they didn't even recognize us as humans lmao
undertale papyrus appears to have never seen the sun before
there's always the "forgettable" check description in the genocide run that haunts my every waking hour.
which is a theme that recurs both in deltarune (the song "don't forget") and in undertale through sans' workshop and the hidden drawing with "don't forget" scribbled on it.
sans has an attack called "gaster blaster". in one of undertale's patches, a bit of dialogue was added when checking the box of attacks in his room if you abort your geno run with his fight about how with his special attack "you surely would've been BLASTED to..." with blasted highlighted in yellow. yeah. safe to assume he has those too.
his paper with Toby's original concept art/details about him had a bit about him having a [REDACTED] named [REDACTED], right under another line that read "has a brother named comic sans". if we take this mysterious presumed relative to be gaster, then his connection to him becomes even stronger
papyrus has a negative reaction to the CORE specifically (he gets inexplicably sad when we call him and he can see it in the distance) but also hotland in general.
Gaster created the CORE and "fell into his own creation". from the way it's phrased, it's highly likely it WAS in fact the CORE, even if it's just vague enough i have my doubts
i really have no idea! I'm heavily inclined to think that the papyrus we meet in undertale is NOT from deltarune/the papyrus we'll meet there, while sans is the same person. this opens some pretty complicated questions to answer, especially from lack of evidence as we're still in chapter 2 out of 7 and we haven't met papyrus yet.
what happens to deltarune papyrus by the end of the game?
if papyrus is from undertale, what happened to UNDERTALE'S sans when deltarune's version got isekaid
exactly how long ago did all of this go down?
sans likely worked with gaster at some point after arriving in undertale, where they found out about the anomaly "our analysis" (which is mostly flowey's work after being resuscitated ie: not in deltarune. the "our" also couldn't have been alphys instead because she gives no indication of being aware of the SAVE powers, the anomaly or time manipulation—though she DID study alternate universes! and she knows sans! interesting coincidence). if so, how is gaster involved with the fate of deltarune NOW, when sans is still there? sure, he was shattered through TIME and space, but wouldn't that constitute a paradox? of course, unless we take "another Him" literally and this isn't the same gaster as the one from undertale
if we go "papyrus is gaster" instead, why does he respond to "papyrus" in deltarune too, why isn't he just gaster (and why does the name "gaster" still crash the game)?
all in all, i DON'T think we have enough material to work with, especially with papyrus. sans had his arc, his lore you could find and piece together with a satisfying conclusion ingame (think of the narrative payback that's finally reaching the workshop behind their house) while papyrus', while still being as much if not even More befuddling, was... all over the place. unexplained. incomplete. you can't piece back much of anything about his past. which is why i have SUPER high expectations for him in deltarune. he's clearly being built up for SomeThing, and i think it's going to be a lore arc just like sans had in undertale, all to himself, while his brother is off having his hotgirl customer service summer with the local goats and... presumably getting sucked into another universe. whoops!
here's a link to the crosstitch page comment, courtesy of @undertale-encyclopedia (you're a godsend to theorists everywhere, thank you so much)
if you're interested in the otherworld/deltarune sans theory, then i cannot recommend @megaderping 's two videos enough, which showcase both its proof AND the contradictions and issues it brings up (HERE'S the original, and HERE's an addendum after some discussion on the previous video). she gathers and mentions pretty much EVERYTHING that made me believe in it in the first place, AND the bits that make me doubt my interpretation of it, though surprisingly i DON'T think they touch on the blood business, which is curious because it's such a big controversy even now. i also owe them and their discord friends credit for the "papvalues" discoveries in deltarune's code, as my hacking and cracking skills are non-existent.

Hi Sonny ! I just read all the post I could find on your Prime Leo Au (though I'm not sure I found everything... I don't know if you ever explained why Kraang Prime needed an Host in the first place). And it gave me thoughts !
First about why Kraang Prime wouldn't want Donnie as an Host despite his smart (yes I know we're well past that but bear with me please ?), there's also that Donnie's knowledge and smarts is primarily on machinery, engineering and programing. But considering that Kraangs rely much more on biological means for their technology, that really wouldn't match well. And since I'm a fan of the Medic Leo headcanon, I also headcanon as interested and good at anatomy, biology and biochemistry. So even there he's a better fit for Kraang Prime that Donnie.
Second, remember that 4 (?) pages comic where we see Prime completely possessing Leo and explaining that Leo can't hear them coz in a dream world etc. It made me thought, what if Raph tried to mind meld Leo right then and there in an attempt to reach out to him. Except it doesn't reach Leo of course coz he's in too deep but it does reach Kraang Prime who's in front... And what if Kraang Prime decided to let it happen ? So Raph just mind meld with it for a few seconds ? Wouldn't that be fuck up or what ? (oh and Prime would be a bastard about it too commenting things like "oh~ it tingle", "You wish to enter right ? Very well I'll allow it")
Ans I know this one won't happen officially in the story (coz if so they would realize Leo's touch aversion wayyyy before Leo himself told them) but if the Fam does enter Leo's Dream World, imagine if Prime, that sick bastard, go "visit" Leo at the same time. I already had that idea as soon as I read about the Dream World but it got back full force when I read how Prime was really "touchy" with Leo, making him uncomfortable. There isn't 1 person in this massive family that wouldn't snap seeing this and I would be here for it.
(In fact, if you're still taking art suggestion, I think that it would be very cool if you could draw the moment where Kraang Prime is there "greeting" the Bros in the Dream World while having his hands on a Leo that is frozen in discomfort while the Bros are also frozen but in shock and stupor because they are still processing what they are seeing. Only if you want of course 👉👈 👀)
another long folks strap in!!
also hii @louve-garoue !!
1.) the answer on why Prime needs a Host: it's honestly easier commanding armies when you have a physical body to help you do that, yknow??
2.) yep! when there's an entire race of aliens who's tech is biorganical, it makes sense taking control of someone who knows how the body works in every aspect. also, to Prime, Donnie is just a smarter than everage baby sooooo
3.) shoot! i legit forgot about mind melding when i made that!! but i'm gonna have to disagree with you; the mind meld trick wouldn't reach Leo at all, and Prime isn't going to let anyone in to try and talk to Leo and help break him out. they'd be a huge dick to Raph about that and flaunt it ("awww, our former brute can't reach the Host~, how...tragic")
4.) ooooooooooo, that's gooood!!! it won't happen in the story "canon"-wise like you said, but it is still a good prompt (maybe i'll write it one day, who knows..). Prime just....forcibly and creepily touching Leo while the fam watches and they can't do anything about it and it pisses them off something good is just *chef's kiss*
for the drawing request, here's Prime playing with Leo's mask tails (pretend that they're looking at the fam while they do this, it was three in the morning when i finished and i straight up conked out)

Vamptember Day 2
“Dissection / Rome / Bathed”
SUMMARY: Rotting away in your room, going no where with your research, you take them up on the invitation
PAIRING: Platonic Armand, Daniel, and Female Reader
WORD COUNT: 2,923
WARNINGS: none!
AUTHOR’S NOTE:
Day two going strong! I managed to up it to nearly 3k words so that’s pretty cool! I used Rome as today’s prompt because mmmmmmyeah you’re gonna hear about all the information I’ve collected about 16th century Italian artists.
It was getting cooler in the mornings. The blaring, continuous, unforgiving, unrelenting hellfire heat, was actually subsiding. And it was getting cooler in the mornings. Your skin sung, and your lungs breathed in clean crisp air that was still damp from the sprinklers running earlier. Never mind it was going to heat back up later, you didn’t care. You were going to be inside all day anyway, but you weren’t going to miss the morning for anything in the world. And it had an affect on everyone, not just you. An extra pep in the step, more smiles returned, rushing to the next class was suddenly out of style.
And you didn’t flinch this time when the cashier gave you the total for your six dollar latte. -Okay, maybe you did a little bit. But it certainly tasted better than usual.
As your shoes hit the stone walkway in tandem with the music in your headphones, you took your time to appreciate the beauty of your campus, which was a lot harder in the afternoons with its 90 degree weather.
The large old oak trees that flanked nearly every corner and walkway, were still holding onto their green foliage. Stubborn things they are. The red brick building, which looked like a great castle or church to you more than anything, towering above all, an ancient watchful guardian.
The usual backyard birds were scattered here and there, mourning doves sat atop roofs with their little round chests poking out, the males sporting a dusty pink color proudly. Starlings pecked in the grass together in their many numbers like someone threw a dozen little black polka dots onto the ground which then magically sprung to life. But what really got you excited, were the crows.
Sure, some people had them all year round, a proper nuisance with their blaring and grating caw, no particularly special plumage to admire. But to you they were a true sign of fall that you cherished, and hearing their guttural yalp was like stepping on the first fallen leaf. Like smelling a bath and body works pumpkin candle. Like buying an orange wool scarf.
Joggers in bright shirts and shorts past you, a man from across the street cussed at his dog, who lifted her wide head up to bite at her leash and tug on it with all her might, paws digging into the sidewalk. The poor old man comically thrashed around. You weren’t sure what her end goal was, but you were rooting for her.
Reluctantly and with a heavy heart, you silently bade goodbye to the morning air as you opened the heavy door to join the masses for class. It’ll be back, you reassured yourself, and even colder tomorrow.
The early hours crept by, and much sooner than you wanted, the afternoon’s heat bled through the windows of your room. You were trying to get some research done for an art history essay, but you found yourself reading the same paragraph over and over about some obscure cathedral in Italy’s capital, desperately searching for information you could use. The lecture you had earlier wasn’t about the cathedral’s architecture, nor a note worthy icon on its walls, but of a teensy tiny little alter piece the size of your thumbnail, which you couldn’t find anywhere in the book.
And your professor wanted a three-thousand word essay on something that didn’t even have a damn Wikipedia page. It was understandable to think he wanted to give a unique assignment, instead of something like a study on the Sistine Chapel, or the Pantheon, but what the hell were you supposed to do with this?
You didn’t even waste your time with the library, surely any books of worth to you were already checked out by your ever so caring and sharing classmates. You even turned to Reddit, which usually had an overflowing cup of obscure and near-useless information, but not a single internet incel was interested in Roman altarpieces from the 16th century, surprisingly.
Which left one solution that you could think of.
And- to be fair, they did offer. Which should be reason enough to go. What were his exact words on the letter? “Have no hesitance”?
But you were hesitating, and why wouldn’t you? You hadn’t even told them your name and he wanted you to come by their apartment for a study session? And no, don’t think for a second the implications were lost on you. They weren’t. It could’ve been a ploy for a trafficking scheme, for all you knew. You could have your liver torn out and sold on the black market. All these seemed perfectly sane reasons not to go.
However that wasn’t what was stopping you.
You were nervous. And deep down you knew all your fears were a little ridiculous and highly unlikely. And It was that kind of thinking which kept you self-sabotaging any kind of potential relationships and left you continuously lonely. And god, were you tired of being lonely. You were tired of coming back in the middle of the night to your dark empty room with absolutely zero phone notifications, and realizing you didn’t speak a word aloud all day.
And that alone was reason enough to risk it. If the world was so ugly and evil that you couldn’t even visit a classmate’s apartment for help without being killed, then it was a world you didn’t want to live in anyway.
You slammed the book shut and put on some shoes, grabbing your car keys and the note with Armand’s address on it.
Yes, the mysterious Armand. What kind of name was that anyway? You had looked it up almost as soon as you got home last night and discovered it was of French origin. That clicked, you could definitely hear French influence in some of his pronunciations and words. You had to ask him later. Maybe he could help you pass your French exam.
The drive to the address was a quick one as the complex resided just outside of campus, just like you remembered. You had passed it multiple times on your way home for holidays and such, and you gawked every time at the sheer amount of wealth it exuded. But that was coming and going, actually driving into the neighborhood gave it all more time to impress you.
You were definitely not in the same tax bracket as the little Frenchman. Daddy’s pockets must be to China, they’re so deep.
You pulled in, parked your car, and walked into the building, trying not to stare too long at the crown molding. You took an elevator up, and glancing down at the paper once or twice, until you found the correct door down the hallway.
Swallowing the nervous lump in your throat, you lifted your hand and knocked, knuckles rapping against the wood. What were you even going to say? What if the one day you came over, was a bad time?
The door opened suddenly without giving you time to react, and a tired face squinted back at you, arm leaning against the doorframe. You eyed the reading glasses pushed up onto his tousled blonde hair, the comfy pants he wore were almost exactly what you were wearing a couple minutes ago in your dorm.
“Hey, I’m sorry, is this a bad time? I figured I’d take you up on the invitation.“
“No, come on in.”
Daniel dropped his arm from the doorframe and opened the door wider. You gingerly stepped inside, thanking him and walked a little deeper into the apartment as he closed the door behind you. It didn’t look like a serial killer’s apartment, the place was nice. Warm brown leather chairs gathered around a low coffee table in the living room, a rather large sound system sat near the back wall, the kitchen was near spotless except for a used coffee pot which looked quite weathered.
“We were starting to think we scared you off.” He said, picking up some stray pages off the floor and setting them on the table next to an open laptop.
“He can get a bit,”
He made a gesture with his hands.
“Enthusiastic.”
“Not at all, I just didn’t want to intrude.” you replied, shifting your weight onto the other foot.
“I’m really grateful, you know. This semester is really kicking my ass.”
He nodded and gave a short laugh as he closed the laptop and sat down. You followed his lead and sat on the couch across from him, sinking into the cushy leather awkwardly. You noticed a large flatscreen tv mounted to the wall behind him, and your eye was drawn to a vast collection of DVDs stacked on a small bookshelf next to it.
“You guys watch a lot of movies?” You observed.
He glanced to where you were looking and shook his head disapprovingly, turning back around.
“Armand’s little hobby. Well one of many.”
He looked a bit better than last you saw him, his eyes were brighter this time, and he moved a little sharper, though the dark circles still remained.
“Speaking of, I should mention he isn’t here right now. But he’ll be back pretty soon.”
“I see. When does he get back?” You asked.
“I’d say…”
Daniel leaned forward and peered to his right before answering you, you mirrored him unconsciously, but you were a little confused. There was no clock you could see on the wall. In fact, nearly the whole wall was a window, you wouldn’t be able to hang much of anything on it. It was a gorgeous view however. The sun hung down low, dipping down behind the city buildings in the distance, the sky melting into a deep orange color.
“About an hour or so. You know, I don’t think I’ve actually introduced myself.”
You were incredibly appreciative he said something, otherwise you probably would’ve forgotten again. You both told each other your names, and a warm feeling bloomed in your chest. You couldn’t believe you almost convinced yourself out of this. When was the last time you shook hands with a stranger and made an acquaintance? Third grade?
“So, what can I help you with?” He started, clasping his hands together.
You explained to him the assignment you were given, telling him about the 16th century alter piece and how hellbent your professor was on the importance the piece had for the renaissance era. You told him about your struggle to find any data on it, books or articles, you’d take anything.
After a moment, Daniel just gave a small laugh. A hint of crows feet appearing at the corners of his eyes.
“I’ll try my best to help you,” he said, “but it’s Armand you really want for this. I’m telling you, there never was a better topic of conversation for him.” He stood up.
“In the meantime I’ll pull out some books of his and see what sticks.“
There you both sat straight across from each other, flipping through page after page of dusty old books. You actually saw a lot of works you liked in these books and pointed them out to Daniel occasionally, noting colors and symbols that caught your eye. You learned that you and him had very different taste. He eventually got up and turned on a few lamps in the room as night began to fall.
Yawning a little, you didn’t realize you’d been there for so long until a clatter down the hall caught Daniel’s attention, his grey eyes lifting up from his book, over your shoulder to the front door.
“That’s probably him in the elevator.“ He mumbled. “Took his sweet time tonight.”
You twisted your body to watch the door. There was a sort of unexpected thrill that held your attention as footsteps grew louder. They approached closer and closer until stopping, the front door unlocking with a click.
As the door swung open, he glided in, turning and locking the door behind him. Clad in simple jeans and crew neck, his vibrant red curls were windswept. He looked like a kid on summer break ready to slink through the city with his friends. His dark eyes sparkled when his gaze fell to you sitting on the couch, and he made a serene smile.
“Oh, my friend, a pleasant surprise!”
You sat up and he crossed the room toward you and Daniel. He stretched out his hand to take yours, the rings on his fingers were chilly, as if he had just been walking through a refrigerator. His eyes bore into yours and he began to speak, his accent slightly thicker than usual.
“I cannot express to you how regretful I was when I realized Daniel and I had walked all the way home without first being informed of your name. I assure you I was taught better than that, my friend. Please, release me at once of my suspense, and I hope you harbor no ill will towards my forgetting myself.”
He held your hand there in an airy grasp, his dark eyebrows furrowed gently, as if to show you he meant business.
Immediately you told him your name, which he repeated back to you with such a seriousness that forced you to hold back a laugh, his accent modifying it slightly, but you didn’t mind.
“Daniel, I cannot believe you allow me to be so rude, clearly I am interrupting.” He said, releasing your hand. “But, forgive me, it is hard not to notice my own books on the table. Could I be of any use?”
Daniel shook his head, smiling at Armand’s theatrics.
“Actually, we were counting on it. All these books of yours and not one mention of an artist we’re looking for.”
“Artist?” His interest was piqued.
You piped up, describing the alter piece, its size, it’s setting, you told him about the cathedral it was painted in, and how impossible it was to find any information on it. Slowly, his focused expression formed into one of recognition, then frowned into indignation.
“Yes, I know the artist.” He turned slowly and picked up a thin paper back from the stack on the table and opened the book.
“There is entirely nothing wrong with learning the masters.” He said with a touch of venom that he unsuccessfully tried to hide, flipping to a certain page. “Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Botticelli.”
Then, turning the book to face you, he waited for you to grab it before pointing to a full page on the exact elusive piece that you and Daniel were searching for all evening. Your jaw dropped silently as he continued ranting, Daniel put his glasses back on and read over your shoulder.
“Even the later artists of Baroque, Caravaggio, Gentileschi, Bernini, all masters of their craft. The techniques you could learn from just one of those artists, are never ending. And these professors choose to waste your time, sending you on a wild goose chase for that.” He gestured to the book you held.
“An untitled sketch by an amateur student scribbled carelessly some five hundred years ago.”
You were hoping for a tiny sliver of information, even just a date would’ve sent you over the moon, but what he provided practically had half your essay done already. You didn’t know how to thank him, you felt a great weight lift from your shoulders.
“That same professor has been foolishly contradictory for as long as I can remember. If ever you should truly want to learn, I beseech you to contact me first before ever stepping foot into another one of his classes.”
He huffed frustratedly, and began putting his books back on the bookshelf silently.
“I can’t thank you enough.” You began, closing the book and holding it so carefully, it could have been a bomb. You were going to call your mom about these two and fire your therapist.
“It is not a problem, please keep it. Knowing that man, you are going to need it later.” He turned after placing the last book back on its shelf. Daniel slipped by him, walking over to the coat hanger and donning a denim jacket.
Armand grabbed your attention again.
“Would you do us the honor of joining us for dinner? There is an impossible amount I would like to talk with you about, if you’d let me, of course. It is one of Daniel’s favorite restaurants, so he is guaranteed to be in an agreeable mood.”
Your stomach lurched at the sound of dinner, there was nothing you wanted more in the world than a warm meal that actually consisted of the three main food groups. But you were completely broke, and the amount that you wanted to eat did not agree with the amount that you could pay for.
You frowned and opened your mouth to decline, when without skipping a beat, he spoke up again, sensing your apprehension.
“Completely my treat. Please.” His voice was like a silver bell, or like a cool bandage on a burn, it smoothed any rough edges of anxiety or worry. And there was no way in hell you were going to turn down that offer.
So together you left the apartment. “The three musketeers” Daniel had called you and Armand laughed a little too hard at it, echoing it all the way down the elevator with delight.
As you all collected into a rather sleek and bougie car to take you to the restaurant, you wondered what kind of odd situation you were getting yourself into…

Hi! This is another Fandom Trumps Hate post for people who are thinking about joining up as a creator but aren't sure. I'm not making this one rebloggable because I'm going to talk a little about my personal experiences with fan events in general and FTH in particular over the years (feel free to link a friend to this post, though, if they're on the fence about participating).
About 10 years ago now, when I was very new to online fandom, I didn't know how to feel about fan charity events. Some of them seemed kind of shady (and some fan-run things are shady, let's be real, but FTH's donations go straight to the charities and the mods never touch it). But some of them seemed legitimate, and as I was spending a lot of my free time making fic and art anyway, I thought: didn't I kind of owe my creative skills to a good cause? When I did decide to refrain from joining these events because I knew that I was too busy, I still felt kind of guilty about it.
Now, a little older and a little wiser, I feel pretty confident saying that if you're really not sure or enthusiastic about participating: don't do it. I am personally handing you a "Get Out Of Jail FTH Guilt-Free" card and telling you it's cool if you're too busy. It's seriously fine.
Here's why:
Fan events, whether we're talking about charity auctions or big bangs just for fun, are often pretty significant commitments. Being "required" to write fic, especially being required to follow someone else's prompt can be a very different experience to writing whatever you want for fun. (Not not fun, just different.)
Some people write fanfiction instead of attempting to publish original fiction to become "real writers" because, as they'll talk about on their own blogs, they want to write as a for-fun hobby. Like painting for fun or baking for fun. Just because someone likes making a fancy cake every once and a while doesn't mean that they want to open a catering business, you know? Things can change when you've made a commitment and when there's money on the line, even if that money has gone to charity. There's an added layer of stress.
If you've never written prompt fic on request before, then it's hard to know how you'll find the experience, if you'll find the stress of it a light burden you barely feel or a heavy burden weighing you down every day. Sometimes, you'll end up writing something you're not 100% into. I've had artistic projects (talking mostly about school and work here, not any fan projects) where the idea was fun and I was proud of the end result, but the work itself was kind of grueling because it wasn't what I personally would have chosen to do.
My FTH bidders over the years have always been incredibly cool people who have proposed fun ideas, which I have really enjoyed writing, and they'll often work with you to find a prompt that you love. I have found my FTH projects rewarding experiences. But I'd be lying if I said that when working on a FTH fic, I've never once occasionally thought, "Man, I kind of wish I was working on something else."
You have to be able to resist the allure of your latest plot bunny and finish the current project. If you're really bad at finishing your WIPs or if you're really bad at finishing your WIPs within a time limit (FTH deadline is Dec 31st of the same year), then maybe creating for a fan event just isn't for you. And that's fine!
There's a reason that FTH recommends in their Signup Tips for First-Time FTH Creators post that new creators start with only one offer and to start small. Write a 5k fic, not a 50k one. Draw a single, cartoony drawing, not a 5-page comic in a realistic style. It's a very responsible thing to do to test the waters of an experience before jumping in the deep end.
Part of the stress of these experiences comes from the fact that if you don't fulfill your promise to create for your bidder, you can get banned from future FTH auctions. Big Bangs and Secret Santa events will also ban you (not because of FTH, FTH doesn't blacklist you to anyone or anything). And you don't want to disappoint your bidder! They seemed really cool and you can feel like you're letting them down just if you make them wait too long.
(I promise you that most bidders are pretty chill people. I personally am happy just donating to the charities and I really don't care when/if my creator gets back to me. Their wellbeing is more important to me than a fic or a piece of art.)
If you feel like you won't be able to fulfill an offer in time or if you don't really want to take a prompt from someone else instead of doing your own thing, then it's fine not to make an offer. (Likewise, if you ever have missed creating something for a fan event because real life stuff came up, then it's fine. You're not a bad person. Life gets in the way sometimes. You thought you could at the time. There are other things to participate in when you know you're ready.)
The thing is that creative skills are much, MUCH more valuable than people are putting them on auction for here. If I was charging a minimum wage of $15/hr for my writing skills for what I've done for FTH over the years, I would have made them THOUSANDS. (I doubt I've made them $1000 total.) I participate in FTH usually when I'm feeling at creative loose ends and want to work on prompt fic. I want the collaborative experience of writing something specific for someone else. It's a project that scratches a particular writing itch for me (the stress of a commitment is there, yes, but it's so easy to carry that I barely notice it), which isn't for everyone, and the fact that this event raises some money for charity is kind of just an added bonus.
If someone is donating $25 dollars to charity so that you'll write them a thank-you gift of a 5,000 word one shot that took you at least 10 hours to write, that is NOT a balanced exchange. If we take the $15/hr wage, that is $150 of labor for $25. This is NOT an efficient way to donate to charity. This is a fan event.
Now, some people require a higher minimum bid for their work than I generally do. (Which is good. They are right to do this. I should probably also do this more seriously.) Some people require $100 dollars for a 1k fic. Some people say they'll write 1k words per every $10. There are ways to bring things back into balance and make things more efficient.
So, if you think that a disparity between the amount donated and your donated labor will piss you off, then put serious minimum bid requirements. Your creative skills are valuable. It is okay to enforce boundaries on your donated time and energy so that you don't end up writing 50k of an idea you don't really like for $25, because that sounds like a recipe for resentment. (I keep mostly to myself, so I have never heard of a situation like this with FTH and am just exaggerating to make a point.)
And if people don't bid on your offer? It doesn't mean that your creative skills aren't valuable. It just means that your offer wasn't what someone was looking for at this particular time. (Honestly, as a side note, it's incredible how much the success of a pitch for a book or show or movie depends on just happening to be made to the right people at the right time. I'm serious. It's a very real thing in the entertainment and publishing industries. I have attended talks by people who say that they've had to pass on great pitches specifically because they're looking for a property to sell to 5yo boys that year and already have a property being sold to 10yo girls.)
If you need to pass on participating because you're busy: look after yourself first! Don't end up disappointing your bidder and yourself because you don't have the time or energy to spare. If you can do it, but it means really stressing yourself out and sacrificing other things to find the time: don't do it. Look after yourself. Don't hurt yourself and your creative muscles over a fan event. Breathe. Take a nap. Play some video games. Participate as a bidder if you have the spare money or just advertise the auction if you don't (if you want to). Or just cheer on creators in AO3 comments or with kudos. FTH allows you to make a donation and add it to their count, even if you don't bid or if you don't want to make a bid.
Would you be happy to know that someone was grinding themselves down trying to please you? Don't do that to your bidder. They're your fellow fans, often fellow creators, who just want to chill and donate to charity, and they'd be really upset to hear that you were making yourself miserable because of their donation.
I have never failed to fulfill a FTH offer. I have only participated in fan events when I know I can do it. I have always enjoyed myself. But I work in a creative industry and I have seen a lot of creative people hurt their own passion for something they love or burn out by trying to force themselves to work on things. (I know this sounds very dramatic. I'm not saying you will burn out. You may be totally fine or maybe only lightly stressed at the end. You'll probably be great, honestly. I bet you're a kickass creator. But it's fine to be wary of burn out until you're in a more confident place.) So, to any creative person, especially younger ones, I wanted to write all this out to tell you that it's fine not to do these things. It's not that serious.
Keep fandom a positive space by giving yourself room to breathe and coming back even stronger when you're ready, as a creator, bidder, or just a supporter. If you've already signed up but you want to pull out of FTH before bidding starts because something came up, email the mods. If this extended rambling about burn out has only strengthened your resolve to kick this fan event's ass, then that's awesome! Good for you! I think it's good to reassess your creative energies every now and again, and I think it's fine to say, "Okay, I think I need a break, I don't want to let anyone down," as much as it is to say, "Yeah, I'm pumped up! I'm good to go! Let's do it!"
EDIT: This whole post sounds kind of negative, so to add more positivity: if you really, really want to do it, then I think you should go ahead and join FTH! Just know your limits. It's okay to start small and to set firm boundaries. FTH can be a lot of fun! You can meet cool people! You can feel like you're making a difference! You may end up writing great and rewarding fics that you never would have written otherwise! Plenty of people have joined FTH for the first time feeling really uncertain and had a great time, no regrets.
Don't do FTH just because you feel weirdly obligated to participate because it's for a good cause. Do FTH because you want to do it.
There will be other events.

hey man, im new here, read the rules and everything. couple questions. -not-a-degen-anon
if i write to fill in a prompt on tumblr, do i need to put it into the nasuverse kink collection on ao3 like that recent medusa prompt that was sent.
for fanart in general, i do sketches so im not sure how that'd work, like a 1-2 page comic or fanart of said characters doing stuff w.o dialogue? but in general for art, if i fill a prompt i still gotta tag it onto the ao3 collection you guys have ?
for old prompts on ur dreamwidth smth, should i still add that onto the ao3 collections?
do you necessary want us to tag you on tumblr for any claims or stuff we did for the prompt, like i have an acct but i barely use this site since its been 6 years. also, since you guys crosspost on ao3 for any stuff that was filled/done should i sent you a link for a completed work i did if you guys didnt see it or reblogged about it? if things get buried
Hello anon!
The ao3 collection exists for three reasons:
Archival. When people want to look up the fills that have already been filled, a lot of them find it easier to go on a full ao3 list you can sort by tags and such, rather than on tumblr where you have to wade through every fill ever made to find what interests you.
So that I, personally, can see it, and crosspost it here. Usually, people directly message me here when they've done a fill. But sometimes they don't, and so the only way for me to know a fill exist is if something new has been added to the ao3 collection. If you make a fill, but don't add it to the collection & don't inform me of it, I will not crosspost it here (because even if I see it, I will assume you don't want to be put on blast for whatever reason. Privacy is important.)
(Not relevant to your question but) so there is a way for people to send prompts/do fills that does not rely on tumblr.
What I mean is: adding your fill to the ao3 collection is optional. If you don't want to add your fill there, it's fine. Plenty of people do fills outside of ao3 (namely art fills, but we've gotten some fics via tumblr and google doc too) and can't add them to the ao3 collection. That's fine too. I would prefer of you added your fills to the ao3 collection because it makes things easier for me as a mod, but don't worry about it. It's not mandatory. This applies to the dreamwidth prompts too, if you fill a prompt from there you can add it to the ao3 collection, or not. Up to you.
Likewise, you don't need to tag me on your fills. It's just one way people have to inform me that they've done a fill. If you'd prefer send me an ask with a link to your fill, that is perfectly fine. (Or use the submission box, this one does not require to be logged on tumblr, it might be more useful to you?)
TL;DR: The ao3 collection + tagging me on tumblr are just ways to inform me a fill exists, if you want to do things differently that's fine by me. If it's been a few days and your fill still isn't up, feel free to send me a message, it's possible I missed it.
I hope I answered all your queries. If I was unclear or missed anything, feel free to ask for clarification, I will gladly provide c}:

✨ End of Year Questions ✨
tagged by @genyathefirebird thank you 💜 i was apprehensive to answer these because i thought i hadn’t written that much but uh. Turns out i wrote a lot it’s just that nobody’s seen any of it.
What is your favorite thing you created?
i think my favorite is zombie movies, because that felt like closing a chapter that i didn’t even know i’d left open. runner up is something slightly cursed encouraged by @xar626 whether she knew it or not where i returned to something I wrote this summer and it turned out it was 2k about a very pivotal blowjob. which i consequently wrote in comic sans. it needs at least another 2k before it’ll be ready for polite society
Which work are you proudest of?
AMARYLLIS i forgot i posted Amaryllis this year. i am so proud of it
Is there anything you are proud of that you achieved this year?
i’ve had brief shining moments where i’ve been writing every day and i’m proud of that. i absolutely believe that it was what allowed me to pass the big test i took this year because i had practice quickly organizing my thoughts and putting them to page
Did you explore anything new this year?
i learned to crochet! i took a class and then i was like yeah this is the life so i’ve crocheted a hat a lot of granny squares with my scrap yarn and am working on a strawberry bag
Which work gave you the most difficulty?
shout out to that time i got caught writing porn on a plane this year and i was like i have to post this or it’ll mean NOTHING and it still isn’t posted because i’m only halfway through revising and i have negative sixteen ideas for a title
What was your biggest creative challenge this year?
i found myself in multiple situations this year where i was confronted with something genuinely close to my worst fears in term of my PTSD, and in both situations i was required to do my absolute best on creative work, once taking a test (lots of writing!) and once playing in the pit in a very long and difficult production. being able to tap into my skills and perform to my best ability was one of the hardest things i’ve ever done and THEN i cut my finger and had to do 3 shows without use of a finger. so that was exceptionally challenging but i succeeded and overcame!
Which work brought you the most joy?
be on your way for sure, first serious smut i’ve ever published and a rarepair passion project. loved writing it and loved posting it
Which of your works do you think people should check out?
i would say i write pretty varied stuff, a lot of it is about grief and a lot of it is angst, so it’s hard to say but i think the series love, persevering is some of my best writing. prompt fills are all under #prompts and my ao3 is here
Do you have creative plans for next year? Is there anything exciting you’re currently working on?
i do want to set myself the goal of posting a lot of the fic on my phone if i can get it up to my personal standard. i’m really nervous about posting it because it’s a big departure from the type of thing i normally write and it’s also for a pairing that is very personal for me, i also know that it’s for something that’s older so i know it won’t be that popular which is always something that makes posting less fun
in terms of music, this is the year i fully learn the prelude to Bach’s 6th cello suite, it’s one of the most beautiful pieces of all time imo. i am also very fortunate in that i’ll get to play Largo from Dvorak’s New World which has been a dream of mine for a long time, plus i get the beautiful little solo 💖 and in terms of fiber arts, it’s the year i finally knit a sweater (or three) and crochet a couple blankets
Lastly, any words of wisdom or advice you’d like to share?
i think writing a lot and posting almost nothing has reminded me why i write, and that’s just because i love it. the external validation is nice and important but if you’re writing just for that, you will inevitably lose your joy for it, which is what happened to me in 2022. set goals for yourself, write what comes naturally, and you can keep it forever or post it, whatever serves you.
tagging @goldheartedsky @sigurism @godihatethisfreakingcat @scorchedhearth @shatterthefragments @bakingmoomins and anyone else who would like to 🌸 important note this doesn’t have to just be about writing!! Anything creative goes

31 Fics of Fright
Day 17- Bones and All
Missy X Reader
Prompt: Skeleton
Notes: I swear I say I love this one every time, but this is one of the few ones where I instantly knew what I was going to write when I found out the prompt. It helps if you’ve read the Missy chronicles story ‘dismemberment’, but you can read this blind!
Warnings: None
Tumblr media
The shovel gave another thunk as it plunged once more into the filthy grave dirt. You heaved, swinging the plate of metal at the soil with a grunt. Another chunk of the ground burst from its structure as you hauled the remnants over the edge of the grave. You’d been at this for hours now. You were surprised your arms hadn’t fallen off completely. The moon blazed down upon the cemetery, its fat glow illuminating the dark and casting its light upon every grave, monument and tombstone. Letters glimmered, etched into stone, the crisp grass breezing in the comforting Autumn wind.
You were about five feet deep into the grave, dirt decorating your body, sweat thick upon your top brow. Your hands had reddened from your grip upon the shovel, thankfully you’d remembered to pack your gloves. You’d shed your woollen knit, leaving you to face the brunt of the temperature in your vest and jeans. Luckily, the sheer heat of the physical labour kept the chill from your bones.
“Missy…” You wheezed, sinking the shovel back into the dirt, stepping on the edge with your filthy boots, aiding the sinking into the dirt. You looked up at the Timelady pitifully, trying your best attempt to mimic her trademark puppy dog expression. If you could fall for it every time, maybe she would too. It hadn’t worked yet, but there was a first time for everything.
“Don't you think… it’s your turn to dig?”
Missy paused, her hands stilling in the air as she held her fine China teacup in her grasp, pinkie finger poised and pointed to the west. Missy had laid out her fineries at the edge of your unsavoury excavation, a damask blanket sprawled across the grass, on which she perched as if having a day at the beach. She’d helped herself to a flask of tea, a packet of biscuits next to her saucer, her romance novel abandoned by her side, a bookmark slid between its pages. Her other book was currently somewhere in the graveyard, Missy having flung the novel in disgust when she found out the heroine didn’t in fact kill the comically photoshopped naked man on the cover. You only hoped, for the sake of her current book, the main character did in fact run off with the villainous sorceress.
“Aw, deary.” Missy cooed, placing the cup down on its saucer and beckoning you with a finger to her side of the grave.
You sighed, abandoning the shovel in its upright position. She inched closer to the edge of her blanket, reaching out her hand. On instinct you sank your chin into her palm, her thumb caressing the side of your mouth. In a swift motion she pulled her handkerchief from her top pocket, flourishing the intricate lace towards the sky, before tenderly dabbing the sweat from your brow. You relented, eyes fluttering shut as she mopped your forehead, throwing the embroidered cloth over her shoulder once she was done. Delicate fingers reached towards the packet of biscuits, and you opened your eyes to see her raising the treat to your lips. You opened wide, taking a bite as Missy pulled the rest of the treat from your lips.
“You’re doing so well, poppet. You’re most certainly nearly there. Wouldn’t want to spoil our precious progress with little old me hopping in there and driving the shovel, now would we?”
You shook your head, chewing as she elegantly pulled up the hem of her skirt, brandishing her Victorian laced heels.
“Besides, how ever would I dig in these babies?”
“I really hope these bones are worth it.” You grumbled, rolling back your shoulders.
“Oh trust me, there’s many more things I'd rather be doing.” Missy said, bushing back your stray hair.
“But those divorce lawyers are trixy, and they won’t rescind the marriage and let me at his fortune until they have all the parts of Bobo’s corpse as proof that he’s really dead.”
You huffed again, Missy watching you curiously. It was so painfully obvious how jealous you were of her temporary marriage, despite the fact she’d technically only been married for three minutes. Mrs Bobo Braithwaite indeed.
“And according to the Corn County Dentistry Office,” she said, glancing at the tombstone that loomed over the grave you were currently standing in. “This is the bastard that has his teeth.”
She was despicable. But you loved her so dearly. Finally bringing the teacup to your lips, she let you take a sip. Instantly, you felt refreshed. You wondered what on earth she’d put in that flask.
“There, now we’ve had a bitch and tea break, we can keep digging. You construction folk are all the same.”
You tilted your head, staring up at the Mistress expectantly. She smirked, before leaning down to place a kiss on your now dry forehead.
“So needy.” She teased, placing the rest of the biscuit in your mouth.
You reclaimed your shovel once more. With each dig you descended lower into the ground, and the dirt pile beside the gravesite grew into a dirt mountain. Missy had begun to revisit the novel, pouring herself a new cup of tea. You dug in silence for a further ten minutes, concentrating hard, the only sound being the hoot of distant owls, and the quiet sound of Missy’s humming as she read. The shovel sunk deep into earth time and time again, the monotonous routine sending you slightly insane.
“Skeletons aren’t that scary.” You rambled, hauling out the dirt.
“Everyone says ‘ooh, there's a skeleton inside you right now’ but realistically, you’re the brain. You’re inside the skeleton, not the other way around. You’re basically a squishy mass driving a flesh robot. What’s so scary about that?”
“Thank the gods this is the last one” Missy muttered, her attention suddenly stolen at the harsh clatter of metal against wood.
At the loud crack of the lid, you whipped your head to meet Missy’s face. You began to rapidly dig, the Timelady watching with anticipation as you unearthed the wooden coffin within the ground. You threw the shovel over the edge of the grave towards the dirt monument, Missy pulling a crowbar from the depths of her black wicker picnic basket. She was leaning over the edge, watching you pry open the lid of the box.
With a puff of dust into the air, a tribe of moths escaping their confinement, you stared down at the corpse: It lay in the coffin, bones yellowed and dirt ridden, its teeth bulging out of its mouth, tethered down with thick metal screws. Missy finally hopped down into the six foot hole, presenting her scanner from her pocket and placing it upon the corpse's mouth. It whizzed and whirred, getting its reading, the pair of you holding your breath as you awaited the results. After an agonizing minute of processing, the screen lit up clear as day-
DNA, BOBO BRAITHWAITE. 100% MATCH.
You smiled wide at the sight, Missy turning towards you with a devious grin.
“How do you feel about two weeks at the Catrigan Nova Spa and Resort, Sweet Face?” She preened, producing a pair of pliers in her spindly fingers.
“All inclusive?” You questioned, raising an excited eyebrow. Missy chuckled, placing the pliers in your awaiting hands and watching as you began to descend upon the skeleton’s teeth.
“As if I'd ever settle for less.”

Gravity Falls 10th Anniversary List O’ Favorite Things:
Tumblr media
OK, Let’s GO! @gf10yearslaterzine, thanks for the questions/prompts!
1. Favorite Character:
At first, it was:
Tumblr media
^Because of that moment^
I started watching shortly after NWHS aired (with no knowledge of the emotions train that would hit when I got to that episode) because I’d seen a few people talking about how funny, cute, and smart Gravity Falls was and instantly liked the girl who made a light-up sweater. Instead of marathoning it, I saved it to watch an episode every so often as a fun pick-me-up for after watching more dramatic/sad/emotional things and eventually caught up right around when ATOTS aired.
Then this happened:
Tumblr media
And Ford became my favorite and the show became a hyperfixation. This nerd who survived thirty years of what drove Fiddleford to erase his memory from a few seconds of exposure and who wrote things like Trust No One, who shoots first and asks questions later, and who is so full of trauma just... Played happily along with Giggle Time Bouncy Boots. He was still so passionate for the things he loved, still ready to be silly, just wanted to have a friend because he’d felt alone for so long, and was still trying to do good for the world despite everything. He had his flaws and misconceptions but ultimately, this nerd was doing the best he could with what he had.
Also, I’ve written about this before but it meant a lot, personally, to see his character type allowed to be one of the heroes where most media would villainize someone like him.
Answers for the rest of the questions (and a plaidypus drawing) are under the cut (because it’s easier for my brain to process answering them together and I don’t want to take up a ton of dash space):
2. Favorite Journal Page:
Oof. A Tough one. There are so many hilarious or cute or just well put-together pages. But, I’m going to go with the last two-page spread because it’s so nice to see them all happy like this:
Tumblr media
Honorable mention to this one too just because I love the artwork for it:
Tumblr media
Oh! and a third mention to the MY MUSE WAS A MONSTER page for the sheer rawness of it.
3. Favorite Monster/Creature:
Tumblr media
The plaidypus! So much cute...
4. Favorite Location:
Tumblr media
The deep/enchanted forest areas. They’re so pretty.
5. Favorite Episode:
To tie in with the favorite character prompt:
Tumblr media
We get to see the family work together, Weird Al is there, Grenda gets to weaponize an armchair, and we get to see who Ford is now, not from the past, not from the journal, and not fresh out of the nightmare realm. Bonus points for Stan apologizing to Dipper for making fun of him. I feel like that was a huge character growth moment for him and more reason to love his character too.
6. Funniest Joke:
Oh man. I’m not sure what to pick here. There’s the classic ones that became memes, of course, but there are also things like Dipper’s internet history and Mabel and the leaf blower.
Hmm. I’m going to go with basically the entire premise of this:
Tumblr media
Getting bored while falling in the bottomless pit.
It’s personally hilarious because on a trip in 2010, a few friends and I saw a well on the top of a mountain and wondered how deep that would have to be if there wasn’t a spring or something. That led to the idea of “at what point do you stop screaming and get hungry or bored or need to sleep when falling into a bottomless pit.” So this episode was basically our thoughts on it.
7. Favorite Game/Book/Merch:
Oof another tough one because, while Journal 3 is probably my favorite, I want to give a shout out to:
Tumblr media
I love that it gave us more stories. We got more Pacifica development, creepy faceless Mabel, a post-Weirdmageddon Stan and Ford adventure with bonus Mabel in the multiverse, a smol Stans adventure, and *gestures to all of Comix Up. I mean, how could you not love some Dipper and Pacifica bonding, Stan finding out that Ford is an interdimensional criminal, Baby Stan and Ford bonding, and almost the entire cast hilariously stuck in anime schoolgirl uniforms and thrown into various other comic book personas.
8. Favorite Song:
Definitely:
Tumblr media
Because that whole karaoke thing was adorable. And this actually leads into...
9. Favorite Quote:
“Karaoke is not about sounding good, it's about sounding terrible, TOGETHER.”
The sentiment is applicable to so many things. It’s not about being good or perfect, it’s about throwing expectations and self-consciousness out the window to have honest fun with the people you love.
10. A Special Memory or Moment About Gravity Falls:
Meeting so many incredible people through the fandom; People I’m friends offline with now and who I still chat with about life. It’s been one of the best experiences of my life getting to talk to so many awesome people, see your creative content, and to create my own (This show made me start drawing again and I’ve gotten hundreds of thousands of words in writing practice thanks to writing fics! Plus cosplaying and getting to meet other cosplayers! So much fun!). Thank you to everyone who helped make this show possible!

By no means do this now, but if you ever get the time recommending some good shadow fanfiction would be cool?
Tumblr media
(Art by Michael Walsh)
Because fanfiction can be a touchy subject, I feel like I need to add a big caveat upfront that I don't endorse or necessarily agree with every single aspect of a fanfic take on the character, nor do I expect others to agree with mine for that matter. I've written Shadow fanfic and taken liberties aplenty with the material, and will probably take more if I get back on that saddle. This is just par for the course when it comes to fanfic. I’m not trying to be judgmental, I just wanna put this out here to try and prevent misunderstandings if possible.
There’s really not that many Shadow fics out there to begin with (especially not after the Conde Nast webpage purges of the 2000s) and not that many that I’d even particularly recommend, I’ve read pretty much all of them still available online as is. I’m gonna leave out some things that could reasonably be called published fanfiction, like the Tales of The Shadowmen stories featuring the character, and stick purely to what you’d find online. So here goes some of my recommendations
Works written by Cryptix / @oldschoolcrimefighters: I've said this before and don't think I can say it enough, but @cryptix23's posts on The Shadow's pulp magazines were one of the biggest deciding factors in making my liking for The Shadow turn into, *gestures at that masterpost on top of my blog, this. I owe her a debt I can never really repay for showing me the heart of this character in a way nobody else had, just by pointing out what was in the source material all along, and particularly regarding info on the agents where there was nowhere else to be found. I still greatly enjoy reading her own fics for the character and how she depicts the dynamics between the agents and The Shadow, and how much color and life they inject into these adventures.
The Nexusverse Shadow / works written by evillurks: You can find some of the prompts written via their Deviantart account Shadowtricker. This one is a lot harder to find in it’s entirety and I think some pages for it are non-existant outside of the Wayback Machine, I compiled as many as I could find in a couple of Word docs for personal reading and probably missed several. It’s on livejournal and comprises a couple hundred (maybe over a thousand) posts of a Shadow RP blog, based around the idea of a somewhat aged-up version of The Shadow still living and active in the 1980s, interacting with an AU version of Myra Reldon (the protagonist more often than not) as well as other characters and worlds through a sort of multiversal crossover dimension thing.
I haven’t had time to read all or even most of the long-form RP stories published but I have read most of their short snippets and I can definitely recommend them. These feels the most like Shadow pulps out of any of these I’ve read, there’s certainly a case for this to be the best version of Myra Reldon (taking everything that worked about the pulp version and doing it better) to the point I kinda default to this as my frame of reference for Myra at times, and though it’s not a high bar to clear, it’s the best take I’ve seen on a “The Shadow in modern times / out of his own time” concept, letting the character age and adapt to different times for better or worse, and still remain recognizably distinct and fiercesome.
Kimberly-Murphy Smith’s Shadow saga: Quoted this one briefly in another post. Will reiterate that, yes, there are aspects about this take on the character that I do find very disagreeable to the point I feel the need to point it out, but all in all: This basically takes the movie version of The Shadow and thoroughly combines with the radio, pulp and comics versions, as well as the other iterations of the movie story such as the James Luceno novelization and the Kaluta/Goss comic, and somehow makes it work.
It’s the best take there ever was on specifically the “movie” version of The Shadow because it’s structured entirely around making the inserted movie changes into a fleshed out character and universe for these things to be in. It did maybe the best job anyone had ever done, until Matt Wagner, of combining and editing all the separate takes on The Shadow into something cohesive and entertaining, as well as making his relationship with Margo work. I like it enough that it even went a long way in redeeming the movie characterization for me. It also did the one thing I absolutely think Shadow fanfics / modern works should be doing, which is introducing new agents aplenty to the fold that don’t overlap with the established supporting cast.
Der Dunkle Adler by Keith Holt: A short one, it takes place in a German tavern in WW1 with soldiers sharing stories about encounters with the mysterious flying ace with a boogeyman reputation. Really good premise, really good execution, solid ending, this is the one that inspired me to do my own take on The Shadow’s war years (although not how I’d “canonically” handle it, for the most part).
Tumblr media
Identities and the 8th Wonder by Matt Dennion: It’s The Shadow vs King Kong told through the perspective of his 3 main identities, as Lamont Cranston shows up to Carl Denham’s exhibit, The Shadow frantically struggles solo to save people from Kong’s rampage despite being completely powerless to do anything but temporarily distract Kong, and then, as The Black Eagle, he works alongside G-8 and his team to put down Kong for good. Not the only time I’ve seen this premise done and usually this kind of “spot the cameo” exercise bores me, but this one stuck with me for a long time as an excellent display of The Shadow fighting despite being hopelessly outmatched in a way he’s never been before, spinning plans and traps on the fly against an unsurmountable menace destroying his city, making mistakes (even fatal ones) in trying to save lives, and finding a way to overcome the odds and help save the day, to a grim resolution unusual for Shadow stories. It’s a little The Spider-y and in a way that works really well for me.
Never to be Cheated by @saphura: Another short one. I like the premise, I like the prose, I like the characterization, the concept’s intriguing, very solid all-around and I tend to appreciate the more explicitly supernatural takes on The Shadow that emphasize the ring and it’s weird significance.
The Life of an Agent series by Greg Daulton: This one sort of provides a bit of backstory for the main agents by showing how they could have met and joined The Shadow. I don’t have much to say about it but it’s pretty allright, more interesting as kind of a shorthand to get to know the agents a little better.
Lineage by Matt Dennion and Tom Kurtz: It’s The Shadow, Batman, and Zorro (both the original and a descendant) battling across four decades to foil Ra’s al Ghul’s master plan. It’s this big epic that does a couple of things I do find interesting, namely 1: I think Ra’s al Ghul being the arch-villain of several different established characters (and even killing one of them), with big names and legacies in their own right across the decades works pretty well in selling him as a big immortal threat to the world at large, 2: I kinda like the idea of Shambala being presided over by god-like figures from different mythologies, I mostly hate Shambala conceptually and in entirety to begin with so anything mildly interesting for it is a plus
In His Shadow by JanEyrEvanescence12: This one falls more on the “very loose reinterpretation of a lot of things and plenty of concepts I find brutally disagreeable, but it does some things interestingly enough that I still think it makes for a pretty allright read to go back to, and because it’s fanfic it’s easy to look at it more for what it is” side of things. It’s unfinished and I wouldn’t even particularly recommend it for it’s story, more so for it’s imagination and some of what it’s doing to reinterpret the character.
Strange Bedfellows by Zath Chauvert: Cute, simple, conceptually pretty funny, and I’m giving away the twist here as is, but the Phurba becoming sort of Lamont and Margo’s weird dog monster, that likes Margo and still kinda hates Lamont, is pretty great.

“WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR IDEAS?”
Tumblr media
“WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR IDEAS?” is one of those cliché questions you hear writers and artists complain about being asked. We do get asked it a lot, but the reason we roll our eyes and sigh about it is we don't know how to answer it. We Don't know how to answer it because we don't know. We have absolutely no idea but we can't say that because then everyone will know we're frauds and then the gig is up.
Really, ideas are everywhere. They are EVERYWHERE, spinning around the universe waiting to smack us in the brain and drive us crazy. They're so ubiquitous, in fact, that they kind of mean nothing at the same time that they are invaluable. The idea for strawberry shortcake came from the same place as the idea for white people to get cornrows, and neither of those ideas affected the world until someone did something with them. We all have ideas every day that sit fallow and forgotten.
I couldn't tell you today when I first had the idea that would become our adaptation of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, but I can tell you it sat in the back of my head for a long time.
“Heathcliff is genderqueer.”
I thought about how it would change the story, and I realized in some ways it made more sense. Then I got mad again thinking about how nearly every adaptation made Heathcliff white when he was described as a person of colour throughout the orignal material, and I promptly moved on with my life, because what was I going to do? Make a graphic novel adaptation of a book I'd read once in a single day in high school?
A few years later, Rori and I were talking about the various grand and ridiculous things about which we talk, and Wuthering Heights became the topic, as it does. I mentioned that I thought the story made a lot of sense if the main character were trans. She, having not read the story, nodded and took my word for it. The conversation moved on, probably to dumb jokes or a deep hang about the future of comics, or dumb jokes about the future of comics. That's how we do it.
The idea was in her mind now too, though, and so one could say that's when our collaboration began, even though we didn't know it yet.
AND THEN THE PANDEMIC!!
Around the end of 2021, we got a message from our very patient agent Janna (hi Janna!) with a question. An editor who was launching a new imprint at a major publisher, none of whom I will name for no reason in particular, was looking for queer adaptations of classic literature, and Janna asked us if we had anything for it. I said a prompt “Nope!” and hung up the phone, and we never talked about it again.
Except that Rori remembers the things I forget and she said “What about Wuthering Heights?” I blinked at her for a few minutes, confused because I'm not very smart. Also, we weren't on the phone.
Had the idea left my brain as soon as I passed it along to her, making it now her idea? Did we have shared custody of the idea? Or was it always mine and she had just adopted it?
One of the best things Rori ever did for me was to insist I start writing down in a single place every story idea I had, regardless of how detailed or thought-out it was. As a result, I have pages and pages and pages of story ideas, some a sentence long, others with extensive notes and characters and dialogue. Wuthering Heights never made it onto that list, somehow. I never imagined I would work on it until that moment talking with Janna about the opportunity.
But it was an idea I loved, an idea I wanted to read, but no one else was going to make it, so it had to be us. And now I could bring it out and get to know it and see what happened. Ideas are magical, but they're ultimately meaningless until they push us to take action and turn them into reality. In this blog, we're going to share how we're turning our Wuthering Heights into a reality.
