Feeling my way through the darkness

It's been a long time since Crockett has let anyone get close to him. He knows the signs, when a relationship begins to move beyond casual, he's quick to nip it in the bud. He's kind with it, at least he thinks he is. He doesn't want any attachments because having feelings for someone means getting hurt and he thinks he has suffered enough to last a life time.

Then he met you, captivating, tenacious and completely not up for any of his bullshit. When a girl turns him down, and it doesnt happen often, he shrugs his shoulders and walks away. But there's something about you that keep him interested.

"Don't you get bored of never waking in the same bed?" You ask him when he runs into you at Molly's.

You won't let him buy you a drink and it feels oddly refreshing. He sits across from you at one of the tables and shrugs his shoulders.

"If I want to sleep I stay in my own." He tells you.

"You know what I mean." You tell him, sipping your cocktail through a straw. "You don't wanna talk about it you don't have to. I just want you to know that that isn't going to happen with me. I like to get to know a person before they take me to bed."

"Fine." He says with that devil may care grin. "Why don't you get to know me?"

"Because you're shallow." You tell him. "At least you pretend to be. You come across as a drunk little party boy, but... I think it masks something, something you're not ready to deal with yet."

Your words cut like a knife, searing straight through his chest. His brows furrow into a frown and his jaw tenses before he pushes away from the table, leaving his beer untouched.

He doesn't see you again after that, not for a couple of months. He keeps an eye out for you but you don't appear until the fall.

You're alone again when he approaches your table, your eyes studying a case file in front of you while you pluck a cherry off the end of your cocktail stick with your teeth. You look up as he sits down, closing the file before you look at him expectantly.

"I had a daughter." He begins. "And her name was Harper."
