Around 500 workers in the garment industry gathered in Leicester’s Spinney Hill Park on Sunday, 1 October to protest the worsening conditions workers are facing amid factory closures in the city. They were joined by labour rights campaigners and trade unionists. This was the first time workers had gathered to publicly protest their situation, but workers said they were ‘ready to speak’.
Suppliers have warned that fashion brands sourcing garments in the city are demanding price reductions, often on orders of clothing already made and delivered, which is making businesses unviable. In turn, garment workers in Leicester report significant reductions in hours and factory closures, increasing pressure on already low paid workers on the frontline of the cost of living crisis. 40% of children in Leicester are living in poverty, including those where parents are in work.
Garment workers are calling on fashion brands to take urgent measures to support the industry in Leicester. They want brands to commit to orders from local suppliers with decent wages and standards safeguarded in the contract price, and for a long-term commitment to the area. At the rally, women spontaneously spoke from the crowd to express their anger and frustration at the lack of work as well as the discrimination they face. Women spoke of being given unpaid trial shifts, zero predictability of the amount of work they’d be offered and the struggle to access services and support without speaking English.
A Leicester garment worker said: “Brands should take responsibility and commit to orders in Leicester. I know that the factories here have been running for many years. I speak to other workers who have been working in this industry for 20+ years. This is the time when workers are in need of work the most because of the cost of living being so high but instead the factories are slowly closing one by one. Thousands of workers are dependent on working in the factories in Leicester and most of us are migrant workers who have moved to the UK because of our suffering and for a better future ahead.
We want factories to stay open and busy, we want improved working conditions and better workplaces with correct rules and regulations and factories that look after workers rights and pay national minimum wage, holiday, and sick pay.
Dominique Muller, UK Policy Lead at Labour Behind the Label, said: “It is high time for UK fashion brands to accept they are responsible for the present crisis garment workers are facing in Leicester. We’ve been here before: during the pandemic revelations about the industry in Leicester forced brands to take measures to improve the treatment of workers. But once public scrutiny moved on, all that remained were vague and aspirational pledges towards a more ethical industry. 3 years later, we see they have failed to live up to their promises.
If brands are serious about building a fairer, more sustainable industry, they must commit to it. They must adopt an ethical sourcing strategy which includes assessing the working conditions of workers in their supply chain and making improvements. In this case, it means committing to UK suppliers and supporting workers in obtaining decent work. The workers who have given brands years of their labour and millions in profits deserve nothing less.”

Military School
Paring: Carl Gallagher x fem!reader
Warnings: fluff, a little bit of violence, angst. Mostly fluff. A lot of fluff.
Word count: 1500
Tumblr media
A/n: I just got to season 7 episode 6 where Carl gets on the bus to go to military school. I already miss him tbh. I almost cried when Fiona told him she was proud of him.
——————————————————————
Your POV:
Today was the day.
The day that Carl was supposed to go off for military school.
He had been talking about it ever since he met Dominique’s dad. Although Dominique was a bitch ass girlfriend, her dad was a kick ass dad.
When me and Carl got together a bit after him and Dominique ended things, he would talk about military school and how it would help him become a better man.
I was surprisingly very supportive in his ideas to go. I thought I would be more upset and try and convince him not to go, but after I saw his face light up while talking about kicking peoples asses and being able to hurt people without getting in trouble for it, I knew I had to support him.
It was gonna be tough. Really really tough, but I know that he would come back and be that man he said he would become.
Long distance was gonna be difficult but I knew we were gonna make it work. We made our friendship work while he was stuck in prison after Sammi fucking ratted him out.
God I hate that bitch.
Needless to say there was no doubt in my mind that me and Carl would end up okay in the end.
After Dominique decided to try and get back with Carl, he started to question everything he was doing. That’s when I had to intervene. She had no right to just swoop in and win him back like some sort of toy from a vending machine.
I was pissed.
Her dad knew that Carl and I were together which made him even more mad when she decided to try and make a move on him once again. He would never admit it but he most definitely was starting to like Carl.
When me and Carl were walking down the street together, he pulled up beside us and told us to jump in. I didn’t know where we were going but once we pulled up to a drive way with Dominique sitting on some man’s lap I knew exactly what Sergeant Winslow was doing.
My blood was boiling. Carl got out of the Car to handle the situation but i really couldn’t help my self. Before I could even think about what I was doing I got out of the car storming straight up to her.
Some not so nice words were exchanged and some punches by me were being thrown.
She had nothing to say after she went running to Sergeant Winslow to tell on me. Of course he was mad but he knew that she deserved it, as hard at it is to admit that about your own daughter.
She didn’t mess with me or Carl after that.
Even after we got to his house for the surprise going away party for him he was still questioning everything he was about to do.
I would question if I was doing the right thing too but In this case he was doing the right thing. He needed to do this for himself. Everyone knew it, including him.
Me, Fiona, Debbie and Lip gather in the kitchen trying to discuss where Ian was and why there were no decorations up.
“I was labeled as the distraction so I couldn’t have gotten any decorations even if I tried” I comment trying to clear my name from the argument on why no one got decorations.
“Ian said that he got it” Debbie says trying to get someone to help her bring Neal in the house.
Neal was an okay guy. He made me uncomfortable every once in awhile but it’s not really his fault. He just very honest with what he says.
Carl walks into the room with a slight frown on his face. He’s still questioning his choices.
Fiona immediately apologizes for the lack of decorations and how the party isn’t going as it was planned.
He started talking to us about wether or not he should actually go and if he was strong enough to do something like this.
I look at him with a blank stare before I speak up “that was the stupidest shit I’ve ever heard”. He looks at me as if I said the rudest thing in the world.
“I mean come on. Your Carl fucking Gallagher. The kid that got suspended for beating up two guys that were bullying me. The kid that got suspended for bullying other kids. The kid that said he was gonna make prison his bitch and did just that. The kid that landed himself in a gang and ended up getting out of it without getting killed. I don’t want you to ever say that your not strong enough for something like this. You are the strongest boy I know. Going to military school is gonna make you the strongest man I know” I practically yell at him all of my emotions spilling out. The frustration in my voice alone makes it clear that everything I’m saying is 100% my thoughts and opinions.
Debbie, Lip, Fiona, and Carl look at me with wide eyes. I calm myself down taking deep breaths into my body. “Listen” I start walking up to him before placing my hands in his.
“I believe in you” I pause moving his hands with mine in a sort of swinging motion between our bodies.
“You are gonna go to military school, become that man you want to be, then your gonna come back home and you’ll be able to show off that new man” I smile rubbing his hands with my thumbs.
He smiles brightly at my speech stretching his arms around my shoulders giving me a strong hug. “I’m gonna do it” he whispers before saying it a bit louder so that everyone else can here him “I’m gonna do it”.
The trip to where everyone was boarding the buses wasn’t too far away. The entire time I was relishing in the moments that I had left with Carl before he got on the bus and went off to find himself.
It was gonna take awhile to get used to but I knew we could do it.
Lip pulled the car into a parking spot making sure the car was in park before we all got out. We all headed to the buses where Sergeant Winslow was standing there waiting for him.
Everyone gave him their hugs and their goodbyes wishing him good luck with everything.
Then it came to me.
I didn’t think I’d do this but I was standing there like a baby about to have a mental breakdown.
Tears were threatening to spill out of my eyes as I watched everyone say goodbye to him as if he were leaving for good.
“Why are you crying” he asks coming over to me after exchanging a few words with Fiona.
“I don’t know” I laugh my body starting to shake with the silent sobs coming from my body.
A big frown etched across his face as he pulls me into a much needed hug. We sway back and forth as we mentally note this beautiful moment between us.
My face is buried into his neck as the tears from my eyes run down my cheeks and onto his shirt.
Once I feel him start to pull back from the hug I pull my arms from around him before placing my hands around his biceps.
Tears continue to fall as I weakly smile at him. He genuinely looks happy to be going to military school which makes my mood lighten a bit.
I laugh a little at my state before wiping the tears out from under my eyes. Maneuvering my hands back to his biceps I rock my hands back and forth before another wave of emotion hits me.
“Just” I start not being able to finish until I took a few deep breaths to calm myself down.
“Just don’t forget about me okay?” I cry my bottom lip quivering.
Me crying like this made me feel so pathetic but I couldn’t help it.
“I would never forget you” he says placing his hands on my biceps to rock me a bit as well. He wants me to get it into my mind which is what I did.
He wouldn’t forget me.
He takes his hands back from my arms, me doing the same.
“I’ll see you soon” I say before pulling him in to my body. I wrap my arms around his shoulders before placing my lips on his. We don’t kiss for very long knowing there was people around.
After about a second or two we pull away huge smiles on our faces. “I’ll see you soon y/n/n” he says back to me before walking up to the bus doors. He gets onto the stairs before turning around to face us.
“Im gonna come back a man” he grins as the doors close in front of him. He gives us one more nod before walking up the rest of the stairs and down the isle to one of the seats.
It’s when the bus drives away that my mind realizes to its full potential that it’s actually happening. I won’t see him for awhile.
He had to do this. He needed this to become a better him.
I’m so proud of who he’s becoming.
——————————————————————
A/n: Hi :) I wanted to write this imagine becuase I’m extremely sad that Carl just left for military school. I already miss him. I know it’s a short one compared to my other imagines but I actually quite like this one a lot so I hope you liked it as much as I do.

Wanna know about my history with soap operas? Well... I know that I’ve shared my love for Dominique Deveraux - TV’s First Black Bitch on the original Dynasty, but that wasn’t the only soap that I watched as a kid and while she was my first, here are a few more Black women in soap operas who I paid attention to (and mostly saw first on soaps).
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
Senait Ashenafi ♡ Keesha Ward, General Hospital: This is one of my favorite soap girls of all times. She was sweet and pretty, and she was in one of my first ships as a preteen? I don't recall how old I was when I was watching this, but I was obsessed. I would rewatch her scenes with Jason all the time on VHS tapes. I stopped watching some time after they broke up.
Tumblr media
Felecia Bell ♡ Simone Hardy, General Hospital: I did not watch General Hospital during the days of earlier Simone casting. But in my soaps heyday, and I mean I set the VCR for my soaps when I wasn't home and watched them when I got home, and Felecia Bell was Simone at that time period. I thought it was interesting to see a character that I was told had a historical landmark for daytime tv.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Renee Elise Goldsberry ♡ Evangeline Williamson, One Life to Live: I had many run ins with OLTL, but the last time I watched it, I had been lured back by one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen in my life! I CRIED when she left the show. I tried to stick around to see what they'd do with her sister, but I quickly lost interest and have not seen the show since.
Rhonda Ross ♡ Toni Burrell, Another World: I wasn't extremely fond of this character, but she had the first Black rape survivor story arc that I can recall seeing and I still remember images of the court trail in my mind today. AND! She was the first Diana Ross child that I knew of. Diana Ross was so important to me in my childhood, her daughter was important by proximity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tracey Ross, Brook Kerr, Lena Cardwell ♡ The Russells, Passions: Sometimes... You see a show that is like a decade long fever dream. That show is Passions. Some might have called it a guilty pleasure, but I don't be guilty about my pleasures and Passions was my pleasure. NONSENSE! But very entertaining. I was not around for all them Simones, but Idk the two lightskint ones apart, so idk which one was on by the time I simply fell off this show.
Lynn Hamilton ♡ Cissie Johnson, Dangerous Women: I definitely didn't see her first in Dangerous Women, but her role in that, as Cissie Johnson was a pretty significant part of a short lived serious that I thought was amazing. It was about women who had been in prison, one fakes her death, escapes, Sqand gets plastic surgery, and there's a lot of stuff that revolves around the ex cons. Cissie was kind of a mammy character, in hindsight, but as a kid, she was a nice Black lady on a show full of snakes and liars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She was also on Generations, a soap opera that I called, "The Black Soap Opera," because there were SO MANY Black people in the cast, and other soaps just did not do that back then.
Sidenote: Generations was the first time that I saw Vivica A. Fox, but I didn't learn her name until Patti Labelle's sitcom Out All Night. Y'all have NO IDEA how much I loved and watched any and every Black show they gave us, even though they never really lasted long. I missed Generations SO MUCH, despite it only being on for a couple of years.
Sharon Leal ♡ Dahlia Crede, Guiding Light: I thought she was the most beautiful woman ever to be on a soap opera. That was basically it. I was only sort of watching Guiding Light, so I barely remember anything about her character, but I collected every photo of her that they put into my mama's soap magazines.
Tumblr media
Mari Morrow ♡ Rachel Gannon, One Life to Live: This character also has been recast several times, but during my consumption, it was Mari Morrow, when Rachel was in her addiction storyline.
Enuka Okuma ♡ Kelly, Fifteen: It took me a ridiculous amount of time to remember that Enuka had been Kelly on Fifteen!! I was excited to realize that, even though still to this day, nobody I speak with ever remembers this show. A Nickolodeon teen drama? Excellent, I loved it. Nick was so good in my day.
I included Arseman, even though I have not seen her since. But, she was rep too, so. There she is.
Tumblr media
Sherri Saum ♡ Vanessa Hart, Sunset Beach: Now... this one is a little different, because I don't remember actually LIKING this character, but she's pretty and whenever I'd see people reblog that Fosters show, I'd always envision my older sister imitating her soap character's boyfriend saying her name (Because my sister hated his acting and imitated him funnily to me) First time I saw this lady and that man, but he later wound up in Shondaland.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST
Garcelle Beauvais ♡ Cynthia Nicols, Models Inc.: This show was a primetime soap. A spin off of Melrose Place. (Melrose Place being a spin off of Beverly Hills 90210), and Garcelle Beauvais gabe me EVERYTHING an angsty child needed inher soaps. This character went through SO MUCH and was SO important to me! She was bulimic. She had an obsessive ex who stalked her. Who KIDNAPPED her and assaulted her in front of her tied up new boyfriend. He had been sending her Black Barbie dolls bound and blindfolded, and when she got down with her new man, he yoinked her. She wound up having to kill him and I supported every moment of her in that one season of a show it feels like only me, my mama and my older sister watched.

Investigation has been launched into claims that the Daily Mail engaged in Blackface ghost-writing by attaching names of Black commentators to racist articles they had not written.
The probe by Byline Investigates and Expose News follows the revelation by whistleblower Dominique Samuels that she had consented to a case of ghost-writing and rejected another request from Daily Mail staff. Regular columnist Nana Akua, who is also a GB News presenter, blocked a Twitter/X user who asked whether any of her articles had been ghost-written for her. Esther Krakue, a Talk TV presenter, has also been asked the question but is yet to respond.
The Daily Mail is being accused of what is labeled by many people as "racism laundering". A term used to describe the phenomenon where people of oppressed groups are used in media, mainly right wing and conservative, to minimize, apologize or promote harmful and bigoted narratives and beliefs, and therefore validating to the average person or even full on bigot that they don't have anything to be ashamed of when it comes to whatever regressive opinion they have.
Right wing pundit Dominique Samuels revealed that many articles that had her as a author weren't actually written by her, but actually already had been written by, as of yet, unknown sources who have enough self awareness to know what they are saying borders on racism so they just pay whatever minority necessary to have a garbage opinion paraded around by "one of the good ones".
Dominique's main motive for her whistle blowing seems to be in retaliation to or at least examplified by what can be called a seasonal "outrage fest", as she calls it, by media against the Notting Hill Carnival, a festival meant to celebrate Caribbean heritage which began as a celebration of the emancipation of black slaves, Samuels claiming she was asked to be the face of a article she claims "verged on racist" for last year on 2022.
Tumblr media
After being asked, Dominique also exposes that her image was used in one of the (possibly) hundreds of article attacking Meghan Markle, further clarifying that her reasoning for accepting these bizarre offers was that in general most guest columns are already ghost written, however, after having done this many times for the Daily Mail, Samuels claims once again she felt that the coverage of the Carnival by the Mail was the last straw for her.
Tumblr media
Right wing media pays minorities to be tokens and Uncle Tom's to validate and save face for bigotry?!?

New York-based transgender activist Cecilia Gentili, who also appeared in Pose, has died at the age of 52.
A post on Argentinian-born Gentili’s Instagram announced her death Tuesday afternoon.
“Our beloved Cecilia Gentili passed away this morning to continue watching over us in spirit,” the announcement read.
“Please be gentle with each other and love one another with ferocity.”
The LGBTQIA+ advocacy group GLAAD also confirmed Gentili’s death in a statement, describing her as “a pillar in the trans community.”
“Cecilia just celebrated her 52nd birthday, surrounded by friends, loved ones, and community,” the statement read.

In Pose, Gentili played Miss Orlando, a New York City woman who offers discounted cosmetic surgery. She made her first appearance in season 1.
Pose costar Dominique Jackson paid tribute with a heartfelt post on Instagram featuring a clip of the pair on the show.
In another post, Jackson wrote that she was “deeply saddened” by Gentili’s “departure.”
“Even in death you are a force to be reckoned with, your legacy one of movement, love and compassion unapologetic and true,” Jackson continued.
“I thank you dearly for ALL the work you have done. You sacrificed you boldly telling your truth and living it and for that you have changed and influenced many lives and the world.”

Tributes for ‘champion’ Cecilia Gentili
New York Governor Kathy Hochul took to X (formally Twitter) to pay tribute.
“New York’s LGBTQ+ community has lost a champion in trans icon Cecilia Gentili,” she wrote.
“As an artist and steadfast activist in the trans rights movement, she helped countless people find love, joy, and acceptance. Our hearts are with her loved ones in this difficult time.”
In an essay for the 2023 anthology “Surviving Transphobia,” Gentili shrugged off the label of “radical” to describe her life’s work.
“I say this to trans people, trans women of color, and to trans women of color who are undocumented or sex workers or both, people like me: Do what you can to achieve whatever level of empowerment you can get, but also be safe,” she wrote.
“I’ll probably never call myself radical, especially in two countries with such high rates of trans femicide and histories of coups.
“I never want to judge my work by how ‘radical’ I am,” she added. “But I do judge it on what I’m doing for my people and for myself.”
Rest in Power, Cecilia.

How’d you get here? /lh
Regardless how you found this, welcome to my current pinned post! My name is “PK” or “Pency”, whichever you prefer. I create narrative audio roleplay videos as well as screech over other narrative audio roleplay videos (/lh). I may eventually post art here as well, who knows, I kind of go with the flow.
That being said, I’ll be providing an overview of my characters and setting for those who are interested. Enjoy!
[Setting]
The main city where most of this universe is set is Noderum. Characters off the top of my head who specifically don’t live here are Dominique and Kordelia. The existence of magic and such is hidden from stagnants, but stagnant and vivified people alike live in this city.
[Characters (as of last update)]
Romeo [he/him]: Cupid neighbor who might as well be scowling 24/7
Nova [mirrored pronouns]: A Necromancer who doubles as a healer. Also an avid nicknamer
Jessalyn [she/her]: A Water Derivative, she’ll sleep when she graduates. Maybe.
Valora [she/her]: Residential Vampire Girlfriend
Mycah* [they/them]: Loving partner, that’s honestly it /lh /pos
Kordelia* [she/her]: Local mail carrier (and bookish friend) who’s just trying to make it through each day
Solstice [she/they]: Friendly Cupid, feel free to hit her up anytime you need something
Serena [she/her]: Flirty Werewolf and the Beta of one of Noderum’s Werewolf packs (the Coulson pack, to be specific)
Eritus [he/she/they**]: (Fallen) Cupid Roommate
Harley [they/he]: Our 2nd residential Vampire or the “Vampire Lover”
Emerson [they/them]: Nervous HIVE classmate
“Retriever” [she/her]: Yandere Best Friend (Only given a nickname. For now.)
Dominique [they/them***]: Mysterious Flirt (and a speaker from early days of the channel)
Dante [he/they]: Tsundere Server dubbed "The Ice Prince" by many
Grayson [Any pronouns]: Southern Werewolf Mate
*Stagnant characters
**Pronouns shift/change
***Also utilizes/is comfortable with masculine identifiers and pronouns at times.
[Note: While Solstice has no canonical visual design, her, Kordelia, and Dominique are all intended to be black characters. (See FAQ for more info)]
[Listener Nicknames]
“Sunshine” - Romeo’s listener* (but they pop up in other characters’ audios as well), a Light Derivative
“Doll” - Nova’s listener, a Werewolf**
“Peaches” - Jessalyn’s listener, a Cupid
“Beloved” - Valora’s listener, a Dynamic
“Baby” - Mycah’s listener
“Dear” - Kordelia’s listener
“Hon” - Serena’s listener, a Dynamic***
“Fangs” - Eri’s listener, a Vampire (big shock /lh)
“Gorgeous” - Harley’s listener, a stagnant human
“Saint” - “Retriever’s” listener, a Dynamic (specifically studying music)
“Sweetness” - Dominique’s listener, a stagnant human
“Sugar” - Grayson's listener, a (telepathic) Surveyor
And for those curious, Solstice has multiple listeners but has a recurring listener nicknamed “Bee” (An Earth Derivative)
*Now shared with Emerson as well
**Also referred to as “Bait” by Serena/their pack
***Nicknamed “Flashlight” by Dante, their coworker
[Potential FAQ]
“What kind of content do you make?” - Loosely speaking, I’d describe the channel as “4A”. I have characters of varying genders (including non-binary) so to label myself one way would be a bit counterproductive. To put it simply: You can expect M4A, F4A, and NB4A content on the channel.
“What does [insert character] look like?” - The only characters who have canon designs are Kordelia and Dominique, as shown in the older videos. Everyone else is up for interpretation based on their respective audios.
“What gender is [insert listener] and what do they look like?” - Also up for interpretation! All listeners are referred to with neutral pronouns for this reason, so go wild.
“What does stagnant/vivified mean?” - Stagnant = Humans without the ability to practice magic, or in simpler terms the unempowered population. Vivified = Non-stagnants, any individual who is capable of practicing magic. Cupids are also considered a vivified species despite not being humans.
“What vivified species are there?” - As of current canon, there are Cupids, Derivatives (beings whose abilities are tied to an element outside of themself), Dynamics (non-specific vivified humans), Necromancers, Vampires, Werewolves, Sirens, Divinators (beings who can naturally practice divination), Surveyors (there’ll be an audio at some point /lh), and Tailors (general shapeshifters).
“How do Nova’s pronouns work?” - Mirrored pronouns mean you use your own pronouns to refer to Nova. You use he/him? Great, so will Nova. They/them? Go wild. Neopronouns? Whatever you use, Nova’s down to use too. You’ll hear speakers do the same when referring to Nova.

Hello! Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I couldn't find any info on it :( I've always been curious about the sans-culottes and the muscadins in Paris: were there "lynchings" or murders by the latter as it happened in other regions of France after the execution of the robespierrists? I always read about the white terror in the departments, but never in the capital (apart from the reactions to the year III insurrections). Thank you!!
Not a dumb question at all!
From what I've read, there were not the kinds of massacres and large-scale assassinations in Paris that could be found in certain departments. I would be surprised if there weren't at least a few isolated incidents, however, since we do have documentation of rock-throwing, beatings with clubs and what can only properly be termed sexual assault (lifting "jacobines"' skirts to whip them, more precisely).
There was also, of course, official repression, as the instruments of repression put in place from 1792 to the Year II remained largely in place or were replaced with others (the way the revolutionary tribunal gave way to military commissions in the repression of the Germinal and Prairial insurrections). Independent of the events of Thermidor or Germinal/Prairial, which saw the worst of the repression, particularly in terms of executions, many members of the popular movement and supporters of the revolutionary government were labeled "terrorists" and arrested as suspects.
And then of course there was the fact that after the repeal of the maximum in particular pretty much anyone who wasn't rich was starving, but whether that counts is, I suppose, debatable.
But it is a frustratingly under-studied area. Nothing has really come along to replace Tarlé and Tonnesson's studies, which are over 60 years old now. It's a question that is evoked by Dominique Godineau where the women of the popular movement are concerned, and more recently Mette Harder and Michel Biard with regard to members of the Convention, but that's about it.
Recently there was a colloquium, the papers from which were recently published in the volume, Juger la "terreur", some of which obliquely address Thermidorian repression, but the focus really seems to be the construction of the "Terror" and how this was used as a counter-model to create an alternate conception of justice. I get the impression that most of the authors are nuanced about this, but that they're still giving the Thermidorians way too much credit. But I haven't had a chance to read it and would delighted to be proved wrong...
In any case, I hope that more or less answers your question!

THROWBACK THURSDAY #35!- Ivy- Apartment Life (1997- Atlantic/2023- Bar-None)
Tumblr media
I got turned into this NYC pop band on their debut (the Lately EP in 1994 and then the Realistic LP in 1995, both on Seed Records) so when this sophomore effort came out a few years later in 1997 it was a huge leap forward for the band. Things seemed more crystallized and focused and the songwriting was sharpened all the way around.
Dominique Durand’s vocals were at once mysterious and beautiful while instrumentalists Andy Chase and Adam Schlesinger (who we sadly lost to COVID in 2020) created a warm and inviting pop groove.
From the playful opener “The Best Thing” to the shoulda-been-a-million-seller “This is the Day” to the sultry “Never Do That Again” to the jangly perfection of “I Get the Message” and “Get Out of the City,” the record is chock full of sleek and sophisticated pop songs.
The band released a few more full-lengths, all worth your time, but this one remains my favorite. It was reissued this year on the Bar-None label for its 25th anniversary so I’m glad someone was paying attention. Give it a spin if you’re already a fan and if you’re a newbie, then listen and bask in its radiating glow!

Note
Do you have any accurate or informational sled dog specific media you enjoy that you could recommend? movies, books, nonfiction, fiction, etc. i also remember you've mentioned children's books about the topic which i'm also interested in for the sake of the kids in my family or if i ever have a child. your blog has fueled a newfound interest and passion in this topic so i wish to absorb as much info as i can.
There are tons of mushing books and a bit less of other medias. In terms of dog sledding books the best way to ensure accuracy is to make sure the author is involved in the sport.
For non-fiction instructional:
Mush! Revised by Charlene Labelle is an excellent introduction to mushing and covers a wide variety of topics including how to make lines, proper methods to turn a sled, make a good trail, stories from history etc. without being overwhelming or getting into the nitty gritty.
For non-fiction biographies:
Race Across Alaska - Libby Riddles & Tim Jones
Welcome to the God Damn Ice Cube - Blair Braverman
Alone Across the Arctic - Pam Flowers
Winterdance - Gary Paulson
My Life in Dog Years - Gary Paulson
Cold Hands, Warm Heart - Jeff King
Dog Man - Martin Buser
Travelers of the Cold: Dogs of the Far North - Dominique Cellura
This Much Country - Kristin Knight Pace
Fiction Books:
Dogsong - Gary Paulson
Ice Dogs - Terry Lynn Johnson
Photo Books:
Dogs on the Trail: A Year in the Life - Blair Braverman
Children's Picture Books:
Kamik: An Inuit Puppy Story (and subsequent other Kamik books) - Donald Uluadluak & Qin Leng (highly recommend this series as it is by an Inuk author and based on real life Inuit experiences with Inuit dogs).
The Great Serum Race: Blazing the Iditarod Trail - Debbie S Miller & Jon Van Zyle
Douggie: The Playful Dog Who Became a Sled Dog Hero - Pam Flowers
Granite - Susan Butcher & David Monson
Akiak: A Tale From the Iditarod - Robert J Blake (a childhood favorite of mine).
Togo - Robert J Blake
Dogteam - Gary Paulson
Fairly Accurate Fictional Movies:
Togo (Disney+)
Iron Will
(please note I enjoy non accurate movies also, the animated balto movie, although VERY historically inaccurate, captured the imagination of many of us and can be seriously credited for inspiring many people to take up the sport.
There are also several popular piece of media I have omitted from this list as they deal with Indigenous people in a pretty...racist way. If you ever delve into older books about the gold rush and mushing in the early 20th century you are bound to come across these things as many early european mushers were christian missionaries).
