strange world (and farming)
So, this might be extremely obvious, but I'm not sure how much this is talked about outside the midwest so??
Strange World's environmental message is a direct reference to monocrop farming, the use of pesticides, and other farming practices that produce more crops but harm soil and the Earth.
The fact that the entire society relies almost entirely on one crop to sustain it? The fact that the second that crop becomes useless or harms the Earth to a degree we can't ignore anymore, our society is going to have to start anew? The fact that the people in charge actively ignore damage to the environment until their own lives are visibly at risk?
That's all us.
The director, Don Hall, is from Iowa and released an introduction before the movie to Iowa theaters where he talks about how much of Iowa is in the film, and how Searcher is a lot like his dad, an Iowa farmer.
Searcher is the protagonist. He's shown to be a likable guy. And yet, his farming practices are harming the Earth, he's not listening to his son about living harmoniously with nature, and he doesn't become a good guy (imo) until the end where he's destroyed everything he's worked for for the sake of the planet.
This movie is a fantasy but it's directly grounded in concrete parallels to our own world, and I love it

Wonder Woman: While I'm gone, Dove is in charge.
Hawk: I should be in charge, I'm the oldest brother.
Wonder Woman: Do you even want to be in charge?
Hawk: No, but I'd like to be asked.

George Harrison turns his amp back on after police attempt to stop the rooftop performance. (Get Back, 2021)
George Harrison v.s. the police
“In Cleveland, without asking us, two senior police officers marched on stage and stopped our show completely because they said the crowd was getting out of hand. The safety curtain was pulled down, and we were ordered to our cars. With the cops shouting, ‘The show’s over, fellows, this is where we take over.’ It’s never happened to us before. But that’s the trouble with American cops – they’re over-enthusiastic, whether it’s for stopping shows, hurling us into cars, baton charging the crowd or just asking 30 autographs at a time." - George's column in The Daily Express (1964) [x]
"We've been and played here in Sydney, and it was the biggest drag of all time. The stage revolves every three minutes and we have to walk right down the aisles like boxers to get to the stage. At the first house I punched a policeman because he was shoving me like mad and some kids had a hold of me all at once and I was trying to get off the stage. I was swearing my head off at one policeman (sorry), and later the chief came and apologised to me." - George in a letter to his parents (1964)
“I noticed a police car. It says, written on the door, ‘To serve and to protect’, and that really sort of buzzed me. I was starting to wonder like, who are they serving, and who are they protecting? I mean that’s where it’s really at because maybe they do serve and protect, but you know…themselves or? Like, who? […] That’s the trick you see. They say, ‘It’s not me. It’s somebody up there telling me what to do,.’ and you can never find like, who is the guy at the top? Because they shift the load, you know? Take a load off Annie.” - George interviewed by Don Hall and Charles Laquidara (1968)
“George arrived home, with Mal Evans and Derek Taylor in tow. All the detectives instantly leaped from George’s settees to converge upon their quarry as he stormed, ranting and raving, into his kitchen. 'The foxes have got their lairs,' George shouted, 'and the birds have their fucking nests, but man doesn’t have anywhere he can fucking go without people breaking into his house!' Ignoring this tirade, the Drug Squad, charging him with possession of cannabis, produced two pieces of incriminating evidence. 'That one’s mine!' George snapped. 'But I’ve never seen this one before in me fucking life! You don’t have to bring your own dope to me house, I’ve got plenty meself! And you didn’t have to turn this whole fucking place upside down, I could have shown you where the stuff was if you’d asked me!' Their only response was to ask George to accompany them to the police station. 'Well, I don’t care where the fuck we go,' George retorted, 'just so long as you get all these fuckers out of my house!'" - Pete Shotton on the 1969 drug bust at Kinfauns [x]
"The prosecution had stated then that Harrison drove his car on to the busy junction of Wigmore Street and Orchard Street blocking traffic. When stopped by the Pc, Stephen Gardner he drove the car forward with the constable walking alongside and twice refused a requestion to drive to the offside of the road. Pc Gardner walked forward and stood in front of the car and Harrison advanced the car slowly and it hit the officer's knee. He drove against the officer three times. Police spent 15 minutes trying to get his name and address, but Harrison, who was heavily bearded, was finally recognized. Mr. Polden told the magistrate yesterday that Harrison was trapped in the boxed area. He was driving his wife's Mercedes, and drove slowly forward. He heard a hammering on the car roof. ‘Mr. Harrison's lot has been to find people hammering on the roof of his car and he did not associate it initially with police action.’
The policeman believed the driver was taking no notice of his signal. Harrison had the car radio on and did not hear the officer speak to him. When the policeman ran in front of the car Harrison realized for the first time he was being requested to stop ‘for reasons quite obscure to him.’ He decided to pull in to the near side and started to turn not realising he was being discourteous. ‘He should have stopped, but it stemmed from a misunderstanding. That is why he pleaded guilty.’ ‘Mr. Harrison's nature is such that the arrogant level of driving does not really enter into it. As far as a man in his position can have, he has a sense of humility. He is not capable of deliberately driving into a police officer, causing him to hurt. He took the whole business impassively rather than arrogantly.’” - Guy Rais, Ban on Harrison (1971) [x]
"George gives me a souvenir as I leave -- a baton belonging to the Chief Constable of Liverpool, which GH took off him at the Liverpool premiere of A Hard Day’s Night!" - Michael Palin, Halfway to Hollywood: Diaries 1980–1988
"I was 15 and then uh...had some little run-in with some policemen, and he told the policemen to fuck off. And that was when I realised he was actually cool, on my side, and not just a scary dad, y'know?" - Dhani Harrison, Living in the Material World

DC LEFTIST INFIGHTING CAGE MATCH: ROUND ONE - SET 7
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DON HALL:
"The guy represented the anti-war movement in the 60s More likely a liberal but his pacifist schtick opposite to his brother's warmongering was his whole thing."
OLIVER QUEEN:
"he's like your really embarrassing dad except he's actually pretty... based? Unlike what people seem to think in fanon he DID lose all of his money, actually, & always continues to do what he can politically to help people in need--though he can be annoyingly preachy or hypocritical sometimes."
"It's basically his middle name."

Bette Kane relationships that are important to you? Ideas for new supporting characters that would suit her?
For my headcanon reboot, I'm sourcing opinions. I have an idea of what kind of character I want Bette to be (she's been several different things in the comics), but am much hazier on who I want her to interact with and have strong, long-term relationships with.
She's the former Tennis star who left the gig early (leaving money on the table) because she got bored of it after a Golden Slam. Was going to have her study sports medicine at UCLA, then become an orthopedic surgeon (she's pretty much amazing at anything she attempts). She's been playing tennis competitively for years, so would have millions, but not tens of millions, of dollars at this young age. But if you really like, I guess she could keep up tennis instead.
For the record, in this universe Kate Kane debuts as Batwoman in her late 20s, and Dick is only 4 years younger than her. If I keep Bette the same age as Dick (as I was planning to), then Kate as mentor doesn't work for me.
I was thinking about a Titans West sort of thing with Mal and Karen and maybe later Don Hall and Holly Granger. I'd like at least one more member, though, so Bette isn't a third wheel before Don and Holly arrive and after Hank leaves (when Don "dies" - it's a whole thing). Of course, if she's continuing to pursue a career in tennis, this could be less of a thing.
Hank's in D.C. and Gar in New York at this time, so that puts the out as her daily companions.
I love the idea of characters (especially non-team characters) having civilian supporting casts - ordinary people - around them. But I'm not too good at inventing characters.

What is the appeal of Hawk and Dove?
i ask myself that every day.
okay serious answer, lets give this a good old college try
Hank and Don
introduced in the 1960s and very much a product of their time, Hank and Don were initially characterized as the two arguments of the Vietnam War. Don being satunchly anti-war/violence and Hank. uh. not that.
here's an incredible panel of the cerebral and nuanced arguments between hawk and dove:
Tumblr media
it doesnt get more nuanced than this.
the bickering is almost entirely the point: it's pretty rare to see them actually agree with each other, but despite all their arguing its pretty clear that they trust each other.
their superpowers are theoretically just meant to enhance their preexisting dynamic, which ive already discussed, and i think theres a LOT of potential in the idea that some power looked at them and was like "Your Super Ability Is Codependancy" i think more heroes should have that power thats hilarious
Hank and Dawn
an interesting take on legacy! really often in comics a legacy mantle is passed to family or a partner of some kind, and by having it instead taken by a complete stranger who still wants to uphold that personal legacy (by being the team Hawk and Dove) is unique
do you like snark? do you like stubborness? then dawn granger might be for you! (terms and conditions may apply)
so the "violent angry man is calmed through the Power Of Love" is legitimately a hugely successful trope, and we could discuss the politics of that trope for a very long time, but regardless of that argument it has spawned countless romance novels worth probably millions of dollars. so some people have gotta be into it
i havent dont any holly reading so i couldnt say for her sorry :((

absolutely no one:
me: anyway it's really cool that hawk and dove are being included in the movie adaptation of crisis on infinite earths since that crisis is when Don Hall died and Dawn Granger became the new Dove. It's pretty easy to notice in some of the screen shots that while Hank and Dawn are standing near eachother they are not doing anything with one another, Hank in particular is facing away from Dawn with his arms crossed. It's quite possible in the animated movie this is happening extremly close to Donny (or Don Hall) death and may be the first time these two have met. Even though I know they won't be main characters, and may even not have speaking roles I think its going to be really cool to see how they interact.
