Star Trek: The Card Game
Original Release: 1994
Developer: Jeff Grubb, Don Perrin, Margaret Weis
Publisher: Fleer
Original Platform: Board Game
Tumblr media
While this is another collectible card game, this is much less in depth than the Customizable Card Game. This one focuses on The Original series where each player takes turns trying to complete missions. The missions, plots and outcomes are cards and if the current player chooses not to play one, the opponent gets to add one. Opponents can also add challenges to make things more difficult for you – but then your rewards for completing them are also increased.
Kirk, Spock and McCoy are also not in anyone’s deck. Instead, they are part of the “core crew” (along with the Enterprise) that both players can select for missions, although at the cost of experience. Completing missions will earn you experience and the goal is to be the first to gather 25 experience.

BIOGRAPHY
TL;DR
Charlotte Perrin found out about the supernatural when her family was killed by ghouls while she was in nursing school. She finished out her nursing degree before selling her family estate and her father's massive construction company, leaving her with a rather large fortune in her bank account. She is very empathetic to those that lose everything like she had to the supernatural, especially younger people that haven't had a chance to live out any part of their life yet. When she comes across individuals like this, she offers to help them learn how to hunt or give them enough money to start a new normal life far away from their trauma. With this, she has collected a family of hunters, whom she lovingly refers to as her kids and will check in on the ones that understandably ran away from their knowledge of the supernatural.
FULL BIO
Charlotte Perrin was born on April 2, 1981 in Mesa, Arizona to parents Elizabeth and Benjamin Perrin. Her grandfather was the founder of a large construction company that eventually spread across the Southwest, amassing the family quite a bit of money when he passed away. Charlotte was really close with her two siblings, James and Madison, because only a year and a half separated the children. Of course, each of them had their own set of friends to hang out with, but they also liked spending a Friday night just with the family. Overall, Charlotte's childhood passed by smoothly, apart from some of the typical high school drama everyone seems to go through. The family spent their summers travelling around the states, with a couple of trips abroad.
When it came to college, Charlotte didn't have a hard time settling down on a career. She knew her brother was the best fit to keep up with the company, because she had no interest in construction whatsoever. So, he went to a college nearby for business management. Nursing ultimately called out to Charlotte. She had a lot of experience in the ER, since she and her siblings were a bit too adventurous in exploring all that they could find in Arizona. While some nurses weren't so friendly, Char wanted to make sure that there was at least one more smiling face out there in the hospitals. Accepted into University of Arizona in Tucson two hours away, she decided it was the perfect fit to be a bit away from home to gain more independence, but also close enough to see her family on weekends when she needed to.
School went pretty well. Charlotte breezed through her general education requirements and was nearly set to start the more clinical based side of her education when her rather picture perfect life came crashing down. She received a call early in the fall semester of her senior year that her father nor her mother showed up for work one morning, so her dad's friend and co-worker, Don went to check on the house. He found her parents and her siblings all slain in the same fashion and appeared to be half eaten. Charlotte took two weeks off of school, while she went home to try and sort out the mess. A couple of mornings after the incident a man knocked on her door claiming to be from the FBI. Charlotte didn't think much of it, but Jim Murphy didn't keep up the ruse for too long into talking to her. He knew she could easily be a target since she would be a lose end in the family and it would be easy for the ghoul to take the form of one of her family members
Charlotte was skeptical at first, but as Jim kept explaining that monsters existed and that it was most likely a ghoul that killed her family and not a sadistic cannibal, she realized that nobody could be making all of this up. He gave her his number and a list of books that he found pretty solid lore in and was on his way to finish the case. The two kept in contact up until his death, which Charlotte can only assume happened since he stopped returning her calls and his phone was eventually deactivated. After this encounter, Charlotte decided that she wanted to help... but she wanted to finish her nursing degree to get more practice with wound care and knowledge on where she could get certain medications if she absolutely had to. She finished her degree, sold the business to Don with the premise of keeping some of her father's stock in the company, and was luckily able to find a buyer for their beautiful home that now was tainted with a history of murder. After that, Charlotte went on the road, hunting monsters on her own, sometimes assisting Jim and some of his friends.
Money was never an issue, since she amassed her family's savings and the money from the two sales, but she decided to put it to good use. Like any hunter, she runs credit card scams and bar hustling on the side to keep up with food and motel room expenses. Her bank account funds are saved for instances when she meets a young person like her that lost everything in a monster strike (or hunters that don't leave a bad taste in her mouth). Children and young adults alike, she calmly explains to them what happened to their family and the existence of monsters. She takes them in under her wing as hunters, or gives them enough money to start their life all over again, away from the tragedy they endured. No matter the situation, she makes sure to give them a small journal of tips on how to protect themselves from the monsters. There were a few that wanted to start over with a normal life, but most of them wanted to stop others from enduring the same fate they did.
By the time Charlotte was in her thirties she had trained several hunters and sent them off to hunt on their own or with other hunters. She has contacts all across the country at any given time, which comes in handy for when she finds a hunt but knows that it will take a few days for her to get there. She can get a bit territorial on cases and is quick to remind other ornery hunters as well as sassy monsters that she should not be messed with due to her ever-growing list of contacts. She has a few safe houses scattered among the states that she shares with the kids she helped develop into stellar hunters, though her main one is in Arcadia, Louisiana. Even while she is on the road alone, she has a traveling companion, an English Setter named Bailey who helps her sleep just a bit better at night.

I Love "The Jack Benny Program" And I Will Talk About And Analyze It At Length: Part II (The Show)
Last week I started talking about my love for the fantastic radio show: The Jack Benny Radio Program which aired on NBC and CBS from 1932-1955. Here is Part I if you want to read up before we get into Part II.
Tumblr media
There is a reason that The Jack Benny Program ran for 23 years and then got turned into a TV show that then ran for 15 years and that is because this show is REALLY GOOD!
When we're talking best sitcoms of all time I think that The Jack Benny Program definitely needs to be put in the Top Five, hands down. Now let's get into why.
WHAT IS THE SHOW ABOUT?
The Jack Benny show is a fictionalized account of the life of Jack Benny, the entertainer. As mentioned in Part I, Jack Benny and all of the characters (excluding Rochester) are meant to be exaggerated versions of their actors. You can see this sort of technique used in modern sitcoms like Curb Your Enthusiasm (which can very well be described as a modern Jack Benny Show).
The show follows the life of Jack and the radio show's crew, actors, and writers. This includes Mary Livingston, Dennis Day, Don Wilson, Kenny Baker (an early character that would be replaced by Dennis Day), Phil Harris, Bob Crosby (who replaces Phil), Barbra Stanwyck (who appears in the later seasons) and more.
The episodes take place in the CBS and NBC studios, famous LA locations, or Jack's home.
HOW WAS THE SHOW MADE?
Every Sunday at 7:00PM, the show was recorded in front of a live studio audience who can be heard in all of the episodes. Due to the live nature of the show, the cast often would mess up lines or choose to riff and interact with the audience. The video below is a compilation of some of the bloopers.
youtube
The show featured a number of writers (Bill Morrow, Ed Beloin, Al Boasberg, Milt Josefsberg, John Tackaberry, George Balzar, Cy Howard, Sam Perrin) and unlike other programs of the time, Jack always made it known that the show used writers.
One of my favorite jokes in the whole series reflects this (Broadcast September 9, 1954 Timestamp 03:59-04:28):
Jack: So you were paid every week. What good is that? A man needs a little relaxation. I mean, money isn't everything. You oughta realize that.
Bob: Oh, usher! Usher!
Usher: Yes, sir?
Bob: Can you tell me where Mr. Benny's brodacasting from. I must be in the wrong studio.
Jack: No no, Bob, you're not in the wrong studio. It's just I have a new writer and he hasn't grasped my character yet. That's all.
Bob: Well, when he gets his first check he will.
Jack: I guess so. They all do sooner or later.
The show also featured a live orchestra which was directed by Phil Harris and, in the later seasons, Bob Crosby. The orchestra members were often treated like a character though the members rarely spoke. One exception to this is Remly who was a named orchestra member. Remly would often be engaged in some sort of inappropriate situation. In show, the orchestra was made up of a various group of felons, womanizers, drunks, and curious dressers.
In the show's later years, Mary developed a bought of serious stage fright. During these years a variety of tactics were used in order to ensure she and her character could still have a presence in the show:
She would dub in her lines after the show was recorded and before it came up for broadcast. This ensured she was able to do her lines without being intimidated by an audience.
Mary and Jack's daughter, Joan, would read lines for her mother as they sounded similar.
Friend of the show, Barbra Stanwyck, would be written in for an episode and she would explain why Mary wasn't "in the show" while fulfilling Mary's dry comedic role.
THINGS THAT MAKE THE SHOW GREAT:
Okay, so there's a lot in my opinon that makes this show so good.
One!
The comedy comes from the characters which is why so many of the jokes can still feel fresh and modern. (There are some jokes that are so surprising and well crafted that I honest to goodness laugh out loud at them.) I think that this not only comes from the slickness of the writing but also from the fact that the writers were, in their own ways, trying to be subversive.
Mind you this is a 70 year old American show so there are a number of things that have aged poorly. The fact that Rochester never calls any of his cast mates by their first names because he's Black and a servant leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The way that Don's weight is constantly used as a punchline leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The antisemitic tropes used despite the fact that Jack, Mary, and the majority of the writing staff is Jewish leaves a bad taste in mouth. But it seems clear that the writers and actors are not particularly fond of those tropes either.
For example, Rochester often outsmarts Jack or makes the sharp biting quips. Unlike shows of the time like Amos and Andy, Rochester (especially in the later years) never had humor centering on a mocking of his race nor was he the object of ridicule. Characters did not make fun of Rochester in a way that was really unseen at the time in mainstream media.
Here's an example of a joke that displays some of that of subversive humor that makes it last till today (Broadcast: Febraury 18, 1940 Timestamp: 38:28-38:59).
Jack: Very good, Rochester. Very good. Now sing "Scatterbarained"
Rochester: Now, wait a minnute boss-
Jack: I said sing "Scatterbrained"-
Rochester: I'm tired of singing for you all the time. Why don't you put a radio in this car?
Jack: Because I only want to hear what I want to hear. That's why.
Mary: Oh, Jack let him rest. He's been singing for an hour.
Rochester: I don't mind singing, Ms. Livingston, but at 8 o'clock he wants me to imitate Amos and Andy.
Jack: Well-
Rochester: I can't do that Blackface stuff.
Two!
I love how the show breaks the fourth wall and leans into the zaniness you can get by being all audio. This is something you'll see/hear in my own show (i.e The BookMarks, Retribution, and Small Victories) and I think Jack and the gang do a great job of it.
They are never afraid to lean into the truly absurd elements of the show. For example, Jack canonically has had a man locked in his vault basement since the founding of Los Angeles. His parrot, who is played by Mel Blanc, often has very sharp conversations with him, Mary's sister Babe plays for the Green Bay Packers, and every so often a quartet of barbershop singers will appear to serenade/haunt/mock Jack and the cast. The show is never afraid to be ridiculous and I think that is something that could never go out of style.
Three!
The show isn't afraid to switch it up. When you're on the air for 23 years it'd be easy to get stale, but they manage to find ways to keep the show fresh. Sometimes they do murder mysteries. Sometimes they have focus on different characters. They, despite being a sitcom, find different ways to show off character growth without deviating too much from the establish traits. It's very organic and I think that is something that anyone can appreciate.
Well!
It's getting pretty long down here. I hadn't realized I wrote quite so much. Let me let you go, but before I do here is an episode of The JBP that I have been enjoying. The premise is that Jack Benny's famous movie star neighbor, Ronald Colman (think a 40s version of Hugh Grant) is having a movie premiere and Jack was not invited.
The only thing you need to know before you start the episode is that Ronald and his wife, Benita, find Jack extremely annoying and Jack wants to be their friend very badly.
ENJOY!

there wasn’t much that he could do at this point. he felt shaken and rattled. he knew that he shouldn’t be lingering on this, not when The Last Battle was already rearing its head, quite wildly. all the of the forces were preparing to leave. soldiers were being armed. The Wolf Guard, the armies of Ghealdan, Dragonsworn, Aes Sedai, Aiel, Andor, Borderlanders, and even the Seanchan! it seemed like the entire world had answered humanity’s call, waiting for Rand al’Thor to advance to Shayol Ghul and face The Dark One. Galad had spent the previous night in forced prayer, sweat beading on his forehead as he tried desperately not to think of what had happened when he had felt something like a spark rushing through him. a spark, a rush of life, creating there at the center of the Void, marring his thoughts entirely. he had lived near to Aes Sedai nearly his entire life and he knew what it meant. the spark. Saidin. something bitter and roiling.
a sickness threads through him at the thought and he thought to go to Elayne although his sister, heavy with child, seemed far too busy. Perrin Aybara had left also and so who would he talk to? he could not talk to any of the Children, he cannot imagine the horror that they would feel once they realized that their Captain Commander feared that he might have located something of the Source, of Saidin inside of him. he didn’t loathe and despise the Aes Sedai - at least not as much as the rest of the Children - but a male Channeler? the stigma remained and it rolled sickenly through him.
he had heard tell of one Aes Sedai who would be easy on those who had questions, who needed words of wisdom. the Wisdom herself, from The Two Rivers, Nynaeve al’Meara. swallowing the thought, the anxiety that rushed through him he donned simple clothes, a simple cloak, and then headed off towards where he would find her. Elayne had said in passing that she would be giving aid to those who would need it. “ Nynaeve Sedai? “ he called out softly, hands somewhat antsy at his sides, regarding her carefully. she was young, but there was a knowing in her eyes that he found interesting. “ might I have a word? “ could she sense his nerves? the sweat beaded on his skin? light save him, what would she think of him? what would happen to him now?

Report on Summer Live Auction and Reminder of Current Online Auction
The fine wine market’s dynamics, from Champagne’s subtle decline to Italy’s strong resilience, reflect the intricate interplay of supply, demand, and investor sentiment. Select Bordeaux and Burgundy producers saw strong demand in the early months of 2024, mirroring the broader economic narrative of cautious optimism and selective investment. As we move deeper into 2024, these patterns highlight the importance of strategic insight and adaptability in navigating both the fine wine market and the fluctuating global economic landscape.
Last Tuesday, we concluded our first live auction of 2024.  It was a true delight having everyone back in the saleroom, and for the room to have the hum and buzz returned. For 6 months in a row, the Bordeaux sector has led the show and in this sale 2000 Chateau Mouton Rothschild achieved the highest hammer win at $1880 which marked the total lot value at $11280. 2008 Chateau Margaux sold for $1057.50, from the same vintage, Chateau Mouton Rothschild sold for $940, and 1981 Chateau Lafite Rothschild also got snapped at $940. Kiwi Bordeaux blends did quite well again, 2010 Stonyridge Vineyard Larose Imperial reached $1586.25, (6 bottle lot) 2012 Stonyridge Vineyard Larose sold for $1128 while 1988 Te Mata Estate Coleraine magnum hammered at $470, 2013 Destiny Bay Magna Praemia sold for $434.75 and 2013 Frenchmans Hill Estate White Horse reached $329.
For Rhone, 1998 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon double magnum scored $1762.50; both 2003 E. Guigal La Landonne and 2003 E. Guigal La Mouline sold for $940, 2010 E. Guigal La Turque followed at $822.50, and 2003 E. Guigal Ex-Voto sold for $763.75; 1995 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon reached the record high of $634.50, followed by 2013 Chateau de Beaucastel Hommage a Jacques Perrin Chateauneuf du Pape at $611.
Italy’s performance has been very steady with gradual increase in past three years. (6 bottle lot) 2005 Tenuta dell’Ornellaia scored $2467.50, both 2003 & 2005 Masseto Tenuta dell’Ornellaia sold for $1233.75, and 2002 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia sold for $434.75.
Other highlights include (6 bottle lot) 2002 Concha y Toro Don Melchor scored $1128; 2010 Penfolds Grange Bin 95 sold for $881.25; 1992 Dom Perignon Rose Vintage Brut and 2020 Kweichow Moutai sold at the same price at $587.50.
All prices include Buyers Premium but exclude GST.
Our sincere thanks again to everyone who participated in this Live auction either in saleroom physically or via online and phone bids. Please feel free to give us feedback if there’s anything we could do to make it an even better experience for you.
Our current online auction has been accepting bids from Wed, February 21 and will conclude at 7pm, Sun March 3. Check the full catalogue and register to bid, auctions.wineauctionroom.com

Wheel of time 2x04 "Daughter of the Night" thoughts
My thoughts on the previous episodes can be found here: https://www.tumblr.com/writer-sedai/727387386710016000?source=share
Tbh liked this episode a bit less than the previous three, it felt both too short and a little meandering. However! There is still much to talk about, so:
Really like the depiction of the seals and how they've started to break. That was definitely something in the book I had trouble picturing (and think was more of a metaphysical thing anyway) so how they translated that to screen was really well done
They've definitely aged Moiraine up for the show, given that her younger sister looks to be about 70. I wonder how this impacts the parts of the story they're bringing from New Spring - have Moiraine and Suian been having an illicit relationship for 60 years instead of 20? Had they both been Aes Sedai for quite some time before the Aiel War and hearing the prophecy? I need to think on this change for a while longer to see if the reaching implications of it are worth it.
That being said, I loved how the scene with Anvaere opened with closeups of her wrinkles, her white hair, the care she put into putting on the wig - it really drives home how normal people age compared to Aes Sedai. The show is definitely leaning into some aspects of the lore that was present in the background in the books but never explored fully.
Some nice Carhienien history in this episode - reference to Laman's Sin, and how it destroyed the Damodred family. Anvaere's position of the last remaining daughter of a once-powerful house, left to build it back up from the ground while her older sister who can channel abandons her is made painfully clear in just two scenes.
I've been watching Mad Men recently so the relationship between Moiraine and her sister really reminds me of the one between Don and his brother - both older siblings who were worshipped by the younger who vanished without a word and upon reuniting can't grasp that all their younger sibling wants is to be acknowledged again and told that they still matter. (Hopefully a different ending to this relationship, though.)
The Alanna/Lan storyline felt mostly like filler tbh. I didn't dislike it but I think it probably could have achieved the same effect with less screentime, especially since so much time has already been dedicated to Alanna's relationship with her warders. (I do realise this is probably because one or both of them will die soon and the audience needs to feel that but...still.)
So if I'm understanding this right, Moiraine released Lan's bond but did not forcibly hand it over to Alanna like she threatened? Since the bond was released willingly and not broken through death, and Lan isn't going through the grief we witnessed with Stepin?
Since things are so broken between Lan and Moiraine right now I wonder if they'll ever be rebonded so the bond can be broken through Moiraine's half-death and Lan can feel the difference, or if they'll remain unbonded for the rest of the series. I'm not really a fan of other option, which is probably why I didn't like this storyline as much.
However, it was great seeing that Alanna's obsession with food is a cultural/family thing!
Confirmation (I think) that the visions Perrin has been seeing are sent by the wolves and not related to his heightened sense of smell. This was my first impression but all the other opinions I read seemed to think different!
Hopper liking Perrin and then sending him the images of his name 🥺 I'm going to sob like a baby when he inevitably dies.
Really liked the wolfbrother backstory we received from Elyas. Unlike some of the other info shared in this episode, it felt like a natural conversation.
(Mostly I'm talking about Egwene's "you don't get it, do you?!" to Nynaeve and then spelling out explicitly why she wants to be Aes Sedai. That was a bit too spelling-it-out for my tastes.)
Also like that Perrin's been unwittingly sending the wolves dreams for the past yearish. It explains the presence of the wolves in some dreams in s1 (not there with Ba'alzamon at all but for a completely different reason), shows how he's a baby wolfbrother, and also provides a connection between the wolves and TAR.
Confirmation that Logain was in Cairhien on Moiraine's (and presumably Suian's?) orders. I can't help but feel petty glee when the show directly addresses something show-haters have been bitching about.
Also love that even without her powers Moiraine is as conniving as ever! Of course she has a backup plan when she let Rand go off so that she could put her strings around him again. I'm not sure how she knew Rand would go to Cairhien (unless I'm forgetting something from their conversation in 1x08) - it would be nice if she explains to him next ep how she manipulated him into going exactly where she wanted haha.
Liandrin's status is finally explicitly revealed (though I still maintain that she lied in 2x01 as a hint)! Poor Min, just wanting to be a normal person and ending up ensnared in the plots of the strongest Forsaken. I wonder if she'll do as Ishamael wants and head towards Cairhien or if her instincts will take them in the opposite direction - towards Falme, of course.
I'm not sure why Liandrin had to knock the girls out? From the 2x05 trailer it looks like she has them in the ways - I'm not sure why she couldn't escort them to Falme like in the books and only betray them on the other side.
Interested to hear what show-only people thought of the Lanfear reveal. Personally I would have liked if it was dragged out a bit more - let Lanfear finish saying what she was going to say! Let Rand sit with the absolute horror of what he's just learned before Moiraine saves him!
I also didn't really like Moiraine just straight up murdering Lanfear, though my opinion has changed a bit after seeing people observe that there was saa in her eyes at the end. It's actually a good way to show that the Dark One can use the TP to bring his minions back to life and that therefore (until balefire is introduced) the heroes have no way to actually kill them.
The girls are out of the Tower without us being introduced to Elaida or Elayne's brother(s) yet which is...hmm. I definitely thought we would have met them before going to Falme since presumably they arrived at the Tower with Elayne, and I still can't believe that they've cut Elaida from the show.
Two mentions of Cadsuane in as many episodes - I definitely think Shohreh Aghdashloo has been cast as her (so perfect!!!) and that she'll be brought into the show much sooner than in the books. They've also directly compared her and Nynaeve, which sets up nicely for their future conflicts.
Aviendha next week!!!

Tu as déjà embrassé une fille ?
— Sur la bouche ?
— Oui.
— Non. Je n’ai jamais embrassé personne.
— Tu as dejà fait l’amour ?
Sa question me sidère.
— Tu veux qu’on essaye ? me demande-t-elle.
Cela me stupéfie à nouveau.
(…)
Louise me bouleverse.

Quote
You should at least take the wizard Majere. He proved himself a real asset to us last night, my lord. Take him and his brother. Caramon Majere's a good fighter and big as a house. The two of them can't hurt, sir, and they could be a real help.

The Raistlin Chronicles - A (kinda) brief review
Tumblr media
"El joven mago hizo su ronda, administrando jarabe de adormideras a aquellos que tenían dolores, humedeciendo las frentes de los que tenían fiebre, poniendo más mantas a los que tiritaban. Su tacto era delicado y su voz tenía un timbre compasivo que llegaba a los enfermos, que les resultaba creíble. No como la voz de las personas sanas, las robustas, por muy buena intención que tuviesen. "Sé lo que es sufrir - parecía decir Raistlin -. Sé lo que es sentir dolor."
Hard to believe this character will become a heartless arcane monster willing to crush everything and everyone to become a god, but that’s how it went.
After finishing The Raistlin Chronicles, a full volume which actually includes two books (The Soulforge and Brothers In Arms), I would read, without exaggeration, two, three, ten, twenty more volumes about the Majere brothers, and when I’d be finished I’d get down on my knees and say thank you (and then ask for more). I had hardly any memories of this story and I enjoyed it like it was the first time.
The Raistlin Chronicles is the prequel that Margaret Weis - with the collaboration of her husband, Don Perrin - has dedicated to who is her best character in the Dragonlance universe, the mage Raistlin Majere, going back to the origins of his life and the main events of his childhood and youth, which until now had been merely hinted in both the Chronicles and the Legends. Although, as I said, it is a prequel and could be read as a standalone book, it really works best if you have read the end - or near end - of the character’s arc first, i.e. the Chronicles and Legends, at least (and yes I'm talking about six books). It’s much more enjoyable once you know what the character will become, going back to the origins of evil, to invite you to reflect on how someone with so many gifts could be lost in such a way, and what caused it.
You might also think that if you don't like Raistlin - clearly I don't include myself there - then this book is of no interest to you. But the wonderful thing is that even so we are facing a fascinating, moving and engaging story despite everything. There comes a time, sooner or later, when you forget that you are in a world like Dungeons & Dragons reconstructing the story of a mage and his warrior brother and it could really be the story of any orphan, rejected by society, who among poverty and loneliness tries to make his way to survive. Very daily topics are treated with the utmost love and respect, where the quality of the author is seen. Poverty, loneliness, disease, love, jealousy, hate, are elaborated in a way that would serve us for any other scenario in real life.

The Soulforge - cover art by Larry Elmore.
The first part (The Soulforge) tells us about Raistlin's life from the age of six until the moment he passed the Test of the mages in the Tower of Wayreth, when he was practically left ill and disabled for life. The author is careful to remind us that the main character has been tormented - and will always be tormented - by three inner demons: pride, jealousy, ambition; each one worse than the previous and that will be the key to his personal ruin. Therefore, far from justifying him and revealing that darkness and evil were unleashed when he nearly lost his life in the Test, Weis reminds us that the darkness was always there, and that it was fueled by a series of personal misfortunes - Test included - of which many can be blamed, but also himself. And so where darkness is there’s also light: we are reminded that he also has inner virtues; intelligence, courage, perseverance, compassion. Little lights that will play a relevant role in his final redemption.
The second part (Brothers In Arms) that she wrote together with Don Perrin is focused on the first moments of the Majere twins as mercenaries; Raistlin as a battle mage and Caramon as a soldier; after the fateful Test which was an inflection in the history of the two brothers. I have heard many readers complain: this second part is boring, why is there so much military tactics, why are they now also telling us about Kitiara and her personal military career; and finally, why so many secondary characters not fully developed. Well, because it is necessary to give consistency to the story!

Raistlin and magic, cover art by Larry Elmore
It is appreciated that as we watch the brothers enlist as mercenaries in Baron Ivor’s army, we also follow their stepsister, Kitiara, on her ascent to dragon highlord. The second part is not boring for a moment and gives us interesting perspectives on military life and war that, again, would be worth for any other story, real or imagined. Although clearly inferior compared with the first part, this second I also enjoyed.
Flaws? Well, like everything good, it ends - and a little prematurely, since I’d have liked to continue to the starting point of the Chronicles, which would follow it chronologically. Second, that being a prequel, the author cannot escape the temptation to anticipate traits or leave hints of what will end up happening to her character, following her mantra of "the darkness was always there", only, in reality, it wasn't that much. Third, there’s also the temptation to make each event have a transcendental relevance in what will happen next, something that really rarely happens in a credible story. And fourth, there are recurring cliches, such as the need to create a character that works as a substitute for Tasslehoff (the half-kender Scrounger) in the second part, because such a character seems desperately needed to contrast with the bitter mage and his witless brother. Not that it bothers me. I've learned to appreciate this kind of characters, when I hated them before. Perhaps because I’ve not been able to write them well, even if I tried.
Tumblr media
Brothers In Arms - cover art by Daniel R. Horne
Anyway, a wonderful, rich, moving book, much better written than - surprise! - the Chronicles and sometimes the Legends, Weis's personal touch is noticeable here, more powerful than when she writes together with Hickman. After all, Raistlin has always been her creature. No one knows him like her.
Highly recommended for Dragonlance fans and especially for Raistlin fans; but also for all those who can identify with the socially marginalized, abandoned of the world, who fought to make their way and, in the fight, progressively lost their humanity.
