Real quick before I get into the think of things, I am not a scientist. I’m just someone who got hella bored and began researching a topic they were interested in. That being said this is kinda long, because again I was bored and had nothing better to do.

Unless you live in a Marvel Universe and are extremely rich (or a college student) making your own Arc Reactor is incredibly difficult. You would need to understand how a fusion reactor works. They work by taking a special kind of hydrogen atom, hydrogen 2 or 3, and speeding them up to the point that they start losing electrons and clash into each other at such a high speed that the positive atoms can’t repulse one another. The end result should be making plasma and this is if you use the donut shaped build like Tony Stark does in the MCU. Now this is possible, but to have it the size Tony does in the MCU/Comics raises two problems before even going into the cost to build it.

Problem one is the heat by-product of turning it on. Physics will tell you that the output you get will be based on the input given and the losses that will follow. Those losses are almost always going to be thermal in nature. The production of plasma gives us an idea of how much heat will be produced. The core of plasma ranges in temperatures from 11,000° - 14,500° Fahrenheit, which is about 6,093° - 8,037° celsius. Even with liquid nitrogen being used as a coolant that isn't exactly something I would want touching my skin unless I was one hundred percent sure there was no way it could burn me because the nitrogen could possibly begin to heat up and even if it didn't you need to change it regularly.

Problem two is the materials needed to actually make the Arc Reactor in the first place. The best real world material, that Tony even uses, would be palladium. Great there is a real world item that can be used to create our Arc Reactor, there is just one problem. The palladium is shown to slowly be killing Tony in Iron Man 2. This is because palladium compounds are regarded as highly toxic and for Tony was increasing the toxicity of his blood. Even if this wasn't a problem, 1 oz of palladium costs around 1,938 dollars. For reference Tony needs 1.5 grams of the stuff to power the reactor. Ok so palladium is out for the sake that we don't want to die from exposure. Then why not try what Tony uses next? What Tony uses next is an element that does not exist in the real world called vibranium and while Tony did try plenty of things that can be found in the real world he points out none of them last nearly as long as the palladium did.

Let's say that we live in an amazing world where these problems don't exist, that brings up the problem of cost. Congrats you can now make an Arc Reactor without having to worry about palladium poisoning. You now have a new problem, the money needed to get the materials. As stated before palladium is a very expensive material. Then you need to take into account things like wires, casing, and coolant, eventually it's going to add up and let’s face it, if you aren't being funded to create this you are a rich person.
