i’ve been scratching my head over the whole watcher situation. I’m not a fan myself but got dragged into it cus of the people I follow, i only watched their puppet history series and the buzzfeed unsolved series from way back- honestly, i couldn’t care less if they locked all their stuff behind a paywall. I’m so neutral on this whole thing, i might as well be swiss.
but i’m not neutral? In fact, the whole thing really bothers me and i couldn’t figure out why.
cus i get it, yanno. As a company that thrives on creativity, i understand you’d wanna cut yourself off the mega-capatalist-giant that is youtube to get rid of annoying restrictions, and asking monetary support from your audience so you can really stretch the limit of your creativity. I GET IT.
And it STILL bothers me!
And then I figured it out:
the whole “any future videos they’ll be making will EXCLUSIVELY be available through a streaming service you have to pay a monthly subscription for” comes less across as “please support us monetarily so we can grow as creators”, and comes more across as “if you want to continue being a fan, or even being a part of the audience, you’re gonna have to pay up. You have no choice in the matter. It’s either pay, or you’re not a ‘real’ fan or a ‘real’ part of our audience.”
THAT’S what’s bothering me about it. It feels like they’re gatekeeping who gets to be part of their community with money (that not everyone might have). And knowing where they come from and how they started…. That’s… extremely tone deaf. To put it gently.

Well…I think it won’t do any harm to post this here. I thought that one my avatar is not good enough so I decided to draw something new, so here it is, little chibi (?) bear Ivan.
It looks so clean in comparison with my usual drawings :’)

This is random but like something that gets me about VegasPete is how they parallel the other relationships in such an interesting way.
Because unlike the other two relationships, Vegas and Pete get to leave the mafia behind.
Kim finds light in Chay, and it forces him to embrace the darkness of the mafia he’s been running from.
Kinn and Porsche find light and happiness within each other but they are now so entrenched within the mafia world that they can never leave. Kinn will not leave his father, Porsche will not leave his mother or Kinn, they are bound to the mafia and won’t leave.
Chay can’t exactly leave behind his brother or mother either, and even if he’s removed from it, he’s been kidnapped once, he’s been targeted twice, he’s tied to the mafia, he’s not going anywhere.
But VegasPete? They get to leave, they are willing to leave and they are happy to be gone. And it’s such a fascinating narrative choice how the couple that started off the darkest is the one that embraces the light and the one with the most innocent meeting has the saddest ending.
There’s something about how being confronted with the unapologetic truth of who someone is from the beginning, messy and raw and cruel and bloodthirsty, allows for a later tenderness and honesty and growth.
VegasPete are arguably the darkest couple, and yet they get to leave, they get to be embraced within the light, they get to be together, away from everything else, they get the lives you know Kinn and Kim wish they could have, and it’s such an interesting narrative choice.
The softer the meeting the more brutal the ending and the more brutal the meeting the softer the ending, and how could it go any other way in the world of the mafia?
