Hey. Have you ever been in the world? I have, and let me tell you. There's something you should know. In the world, there are Funny Birds. They're basically everywhere. Some people in the world, they might say "I don't see any funny birds. Just regular birds." These people are wrong and are fools, because every bird is funny, and if you don't think a given bird is funny, you just need to get better at perceiving birds!

That being said, some birds are inherently more funny than others. Bowling Bird is one such bird. Species. It's a species.

See? Look how many! SO many! And so funny! They're like a bunch of bowling pins! That is why they are called Bowling Birds. You may be aware that Donkey Kong has a Rolling attack, in which he curls into a ball... uh oh! Bowling Birds exist all for a silly visual gag, and it is quite whimsical, but it's sad that so many funny birds must be sacrificed for it. And yes, they die! They puff into smoke after being knocked away! I think they should land in the water and bob like buoys, but they don't. Maybe they do offscreen? I hope so!

Delightfully, and surprisingly, Bowling Birds are not just ambiguous seabirds, but their Japanese name reveals that they are DODOS! Between these, and Dozy here from Tropical Freeze, Retro Studios clearly has some Dodo Fans. Hooray! This also obviously indicates that, in the Donkey Kong universe, dodos never went extinct, and in fact have continued to give rise to endemic subspecies, around DK Island and further around the world, like in Lost Mangroves! Some stayed pretty similar to Classic Dodos. Some became bowling pins. Clearly, being bowling pins has worked for them, so don't judge!

On the topic of these speculative surviving Dodos, I am now finding Dozies, and their more aggressive variant, the Sour Dodo, to be quite fascinating! Dodos didn't need to adapt any flight or even swimming, and this would eventually be their demise in our world, but THESE dodos have life preservers. I don't know where they got them, but they have them! Already, there's a way to get away from terrestrial predators, at the cost of merely getting their feathers soaked. Now that is indeed preserving their lives! Looking at Sour Dodo, we can also see they are capable of getting aggressive, so maybe they can even fight off threats now!

As usual with DKC enemies, I feel the need to point out that all of these dodos are larger than a gorilla. Even Bowling Bird is! Hooray for island gigantism! Did you know dodos were are pigeons? We all love pigeons!

Well, my sister an I've been playing Donkey Kong Country Returns since the beginning of the year (after giving up for like 8 years) so we'll see if we finish it by the end of the year 💀

In Donkey Kong Country Returns, there is an extremely obscure secret regarding a singular Flaming Tiki Buzz enemy near the end of Level 1-3, Tree Top Bop. Unlike every single other Flaming Tiki Buzz in the game, this one has a slight sparkle effect around it, which is difficult to notice at the game’s actual resolution and is additionally masked by the flame effect always present around these enemies (top).

The only way to defeat this Flaming Tiki Buzz is to grab a DK Barrel from earlier on in the level and jump over a series of precarious tilting platforms while holding the barrel and not releasing it, which is highly unlikely to happen during regular gameplay. If this is done and the barrel is used to defeat the enemy, it is revealed that it leaves behind three extra life balloons after dying, presumably in connection to the sparkles. This is not mentioned in any of the game’s official guides.

Nowadays lots of people have played Super Mario Bros. Wonder and met Hoppo, the funny bouncy hippo. To this I say, PAH! Back in my day we had a DIFFERENT funny bouncy hippo to platform around, and it never even got any high-quality PNG official artwork! And we liked it! We liked it because we were playing a good game. Our enjoyment was not affected by whether a Bopapodamus image had a transparent background.

That little Cranky Kong joke there made me realize, it's been a while since the release of DKCR. So I checked, and the time between then and now is LONGER than the time between Donkey Kong (arcade) and Donkey Kong Country 1! What the heck! I don't like that! The DK from Returns could have become a new Cranky in that time, and the old Cranky could have died! Died and been sent to the glue factory, where they make Gorilla Glue®!

Anyway, Bopapodamus. Like many of the Retro Studios DKC enemies, it is pretty much just a cartoon animal, which there's nothing wrong with! But it does make a lot of them less interesting to talk about. THIS cartoon hippo, though, is found in the forest, and clings to the top of poles! That's ridiculous! A fun zoology fact is that hippos cannot do that. Hippo feet are already not at all suited for clinging to things, but Bopapodamus even has ELEPHANT feet. Even less capable of cling! At least hippos have movable toes!

The obvious question here is: why is a hippo clinging to the top of the pole? To solve this conundrum, we must think of real animals whose lifestyles involve clinging to something in the forest... like ticks! They may be relatively harmless to a (comparatively) small gorilla, but just imagine if a really BIG gorilla walked by. A gorilla the size of the moon, just strolling by. Bopapodamus just needs to grab onto its hair as it passes by, and then it can slurp blood without being noticed!

"Bopapodamus" is a silly name. Retro Studios loves to use the word "bop" in these games! It's in one Returns level name, and two Tropical Freeze level names! I must admit it is a good word for what happens when DK jumps on an enemy. They do indeed get Bopped! I am thankful to not get bopped by a gorilla, in my everyday life! It doesn't sound like something I would like.

When beginning work on that fantasy parody comic I was talking about a while back, I opted to give Tiki Tong a more humanoid form because even tho he won't physically appear in a way that moves or is expressive very often, I still find his normal design a bit too difficult to draw. I still wanted to keep that humanoid-but-still-eldritch-deity look while maintaining specific aspects of his design, so this wound up being the result.

If you're curious about what that mouth do, he can go between it moving in a similar way to a human or kong's, to... well, what's below the cut.
