i yearn for one(1) thing only, and that is to have a nice, simplistic, cartoonish artstyle. an artstyle that doesnt rely on anatomy, but the "movement" of the drawing, if you get what i mean.

i dont want realistic proportions and traditional colors and basic poses and gradient shading, i want funky lil dudes in funky poses with funky styles littering my sketchbook :( but alas i havent figured out how to develop that kind of style yet, my brain wants anatomy to look nice but also i dont want to draw eyes. i dont want to take time out of my day to learn how to draw lips i want to draw a line that extends past the characters face. i dont want all my characters to have pointy chins with curved cheeks i want their heads to be round and friend-like or full of sharp edges depending on their personalities and styles. i want to give them all not-quite human ears, blob feet, simple faces, but at the same time i want enough detail to convey the story or emotion im trying to tell.

ive spent so much time recently agonizing over how to use 3d model websites, using real-life references and tracing over them for practice, color-picking from real images to try and do realism and failing miserably, but you know whats easier than that? funky little dudes. little dudes who do not care if their legs are too long or their hair is too bouncy. i dont want my characters to look human.

ive spent enough time on the artfight website to realize that most people who classify their characters as "human" have the most basic ass designs (no offense to people who like basic human designs its just not my thing) or its like dnd-medieval style outfits which i cant draw for the life of me (ive tried). again no offense to people who actively enjoy and draw characters like that. i just need my dudes to have that certain,,, off-ness to them. tails are cool. wings are swag (especially if they arent even like,, fully attached,, ), elf ears are so wonderful to me no matter how much theyre overused, horns are so much fun to draw, and colors!! i have no knowledge in the color theory department so this works great for me!! the only thing i really know is dont shade with black, other than that i just colorpick from references usually but i dont want to do that!! i want the colors to hurt people's eyes but in a satisfying way. like the character's design is so nice to look at that you dont mind your eyes hurting a bit. like how im enjoying writing this post even though its 2 am and the brightness on my computer wont go any lower.

and then another thing ive noticed from being on the artfight website is that a lot of people classify their characters that are anthro/have anthro features under humanoids/monsters. like i made a google form to find some people to attack and someone sent me in a character with some sort of animal (wolf? idk) arms and legs. like dude!! peak character design i love her. but me personally? i cant draw that shit, its so hard for me. i tried a while back and its just Not my thing. nothing against furries i just. cant. and i dont want to either.

and i got another submission that i accidentally deleted that was like full anthro/wolf-like like my comrade,,, i cannot draw animals what makes you think i can draw an animal who acts like a human lmao. i can do like. very basic tails, and also animal ears but i cant do the arms and legs and such i just dont know the anatomy, and i know i was talking about how i dont want to care about anatomy but i feel like for anthros you really do need to know at least basic animal anatomy so you know how the limbs look and shit and i dont have that knowledge and dont feel like gaining it.

and then there were some submissions that i absolutely adored. there was one that like, was vaguely human shaped but definitely was not a human. they had a dark-ish lavender colored skin and horns and tusks and like goat ears and a sorta fluffy tail with spikes on it and they had wings and such and they were such a pleasure to draw i love them. and they had a fairly simple outfit too, nothing too complicated. and then i also enjoy object head characters, theyre so neato to me. i got one of those and i really wish i had the motivation to work on it cause it looks so fun.

i want to make funky characters but id have nothing to do with them because the only book i ever tried writing (key word tried - never got past planning it out) had strictly human characters in it, and most of the books i read are humans/humans with powers in situations specific to them so id have no idea what lore to make with the dudes. assuming i have the motivation to make lore and backstory because honestly i just really enjoy character designing its super duper fun.

(side note a song about trucks doing the deed came on just now and its interrupted my flow, apologies).

i only have three actual characters right now. one is an original roleplay oc whos design is literally athletic shorts, an oversized long sleeved grey sweatshirt, long purple hair, and demon horns. the second one is my persona whos design some sorta medival knight outfit kinda thing? but not ugly it looks really cool (idk one of my friends designed it bc i won some contest from him but the drawing was on a super small scale so idrk the details,,,) with a plague doctor mask and crown, and shoulder length wavy brown hair, dyed bright pink at the end. and then my last one im not too comfortable using other places because theyre a character my friend is using in the story hes writing, and thats really the only place theyve been used. but theyre easily my favorite and im already writing a ton so ill talk about them too.

they're a sorta elf species thing from another planet, with pale green skin and pointed ears. they also have a tail, its like,, super thin, but with a feathery bit at the end. probably not the texture of a feather but i dont know how else to describe it. they have short, curly, almost-draco-malfoy-blonde hair that when it gets too long they can put in a man bun. their eyesight is kinda shitty so when they got to earth, they were exploring some supply closets around the airship. drop off area. thing. like airport but for rocketships and also fancier. yeah. they were exploring that area and found a nice big pair of round glasses with grey frames. and they also found a cowboy-style hat and a sharpie so they wrote their name on the underside of the brim of the hat and stole the hat and glasses (but left the sharpie in the supply closet).

yeah theyre my favorite, my absolute beloved, my child, so cool. i want more characters like them but with maybe a bit more snazzier designs. theyre super cool and all but they could have more pizzazz if they werent in a story where its too late to give them more pizzazz. i just want to be able to give my characters thigh-high boots with a bunch of buckles and fluffy hair with tons of accessories crammed in and abnormally large and long ears that can harbor many piercings and horns that can hold rings on them and special little details on their outfits like who knows what but i dont have any characters to do that too, so i have to make them from scratch, which is always hard especially when you have artblock.

and i also have like 17 characters i need to fully draw, line, and maybe color for artfight before august 1st. so i dont know. i have many things to do and plenty of time to do it but instead i spend my time halfway watching repetitive youtube videos that get boring or sleeping all damn day because i stay up too late doing things like this or i just do nothing at all and its tiring and frustrating but i also feel nothing about it like theres no consequence if i dont do it besides you know. not doing it, not gaining that experience, not making something i enjoy.

so i should do it but i dont for whatever reason, i think its called executive dysfunction but im not sure. this post started out very differently than it ended and i said somewhere up there that i was writing this at 2 am but now its almost 3. this is so many words why couldnt i have put this energy into something productive

Homesquared Chapter 9 Thoughts

Well Annie (and by Annie I mean Yiffany) looks pretty freaking sweet not gonna lie, I do actually like her style and look a lot, and she also talks in that maroony red color i figured she was gonna talk in just like the fabrics in Harry’s room suggested

Jesus Christ tho Jane almost feels like she’s going full sociopathic here

like oh yeah what should i do and or say at a funeral in order to garner the most correct and beneficial to me response from the masses? fake emotion on cue? taze a child through a dog collar? hmmm!!!

thats a real neato effect of turning the background dark when Annie passed out tho and the next convo implying its taking place at night time as well

Again the word Time is capitalized when referencing something of Harry’s character

I really like the nice little close conversations all the kids are having though, it feels really well written and organic, i feel like I’m starting to get comfortable in this funky little bean bag chair of an epilogue yknow?

like, despite Annie existing with her backstory and her real name and all of that, I think were gonna get some cool stuff with her! Cuz like, its not her fault all of that happened to her, and its gonna be hella interesting to see her reactions to all of that and how that plays out

I get that theres some weirdness knowing the dumb shit comes from the characters who were previously the protagonists in homestuck of olde so one the one hand we kind of expect better of them since as an audience we feel like we know them well enough to think they wouldnt do dumb stuff like this

but on the other hand, their narrative role in the epilogue is as the parents and the adults

but the “adult” figures in Homestuck Classic did all kind of freaking insane batshit crazy ass things that make literally no sense to anyone and theres practically no logic to suss out from their actions so like

i dont know, i just get the sense it kinda Fits(tm) that now that the old characters are adults, theyd start acting like dumbass adults like we got used to the previous set of adults acting like?

Like, it’s this sense that as characters in a Homestuck story, Children are the Protagonists, and as Children Protagonists, they can’t afford to be silly and dumb, they're Too Important for that shit

But the adults? They fade into the background juuuust enough that they can afford to do all kinds of wacky ass shit

So here in the epilogues, it feels like were getting a taste of that transition, our old characters becoming less of a focus, so theyre freer to act in weird and wacky ways they might not have in Homestuck 1, while our new children characters are coming from a place of dubious canonicity and wacky silliness and are now struggling to deal with this newfound sense of Importance and Weight as they ease into becoming our main characters

i hated this so fucking much bc my 2 am bitch-ass didnt want to read a recap thats probably longer than any slowburn out there

anyways here it is

also, uhhH sorry im using this as a end of session discussion bc that shit gets explained in her as well. and im not writing up more recaps of a recap so this is where im done for the day. (by done for the day i mean last nights session, im still doing a liveblog soon. i just wrote this yesterday)

omg okay so i was totally ignorant but now i am enlightened because the brilliant @h00f sent me the booth video recording and im dying over it so here we goooo. i recorded it and uploaded the vid into davinci resolve so i could zoom in and also go through frame by frame.

tl;dr: so its all good its all good UM TYREEN’S TATTOOS WENT MISSING ON HER FOREARM AND THEN SHE SUCKED A MONSTER AND THEY REAPPEARED so it’s all good it’s all good im not having a crisis. im not. i thiiiiiiiiink we see the Vault of Promethea (the one with the cranes, but lilith also says “wherever the hunt for the vaults takes us” which throws me off a bit. still kinda think it’s promethea tho).

so not what i was expecting to be doing at 2:32 am but you know what? this is okay, borderlands gives me literally infinite energy

those guardian statues have staffs!!! that’s so rad, like the Watcher and shit, they also have less big necks?? or they might be bowing down. they look a lot more humanoid than the guardian/eridian statues im used to!!!

like as far as i can see they don’t have the butt spikes? maybe these are just super well preserved and thus not broken/spiky/cracked!! I do think the staffs are awesome! I know the Watcher carried one and so do some in TPS (I don’t recall seeing any in bl1 with staffs? im pretty sure they used their energy claw things) so maybe these are a higher tier of guardian than the ones we see in bl1? (which, if the Eridians wanted us to open Pandora’s vault as punishment for stealing fire the tech on Promethea, then that would make sense)

AND THE CRANES! and the buildings!!!!! is this Promethea’s vault? there’s something in the sky near the moon (?) so i thought maybe that was the asteroid belt but... it’s only condensed in one area..?

it looks like a rocky place (you know, the quasmarian quarry Typhon mentions?!), i could see it, it looks super well-kept!!! my only problem?? it’s not underground/next to a cliff or anything. i guess it’s actually possible with those cranes and shit that it’s been excavated completely

i think we walk out of a temple here, which makes me think this is connected to the temple with all those monster dudes in it (also i can’t be the only one who thinks the blue sparkles on the statue on the far left makes it look like it has a shiny thicc butt. i CANNOT be the only one)

She's such a 'feminist'. Shes the bitch who'd have a bake sale for equality, charge boys $1 and girls 75 cents. Shes annoying. They never explain HOW shes a professor?? Shes like 5?? What are you professor of? Fucking potty training?? Whatever powdered sugar can do better.

Ugh god. Hes the guy on call of duty telling you he fucked your mom last night. He's just...annoying. weird buff goth, and his invention wasn't that creative in my book, and it DID make Dirtboss. But at least thanks to him Optimus got to punch Sentinel.

Verdict:4/10. Don't take him home. You guys deserve more than this.

Was available for only one episode. Ill say one thing, dudes got good colors. Red is such a magical color. He works with it. He's also got a neato role, which was interesting enough for a one time baddie. I think i just....really don't like his face.

Verdict:6/10. Chances are he doesn't wanna meet your folks, since he's doing illegal shit. Plus lets face it you'd only hit that for money.

Slowmo!!;

This dame is EVERYTHING! The bee's knees, the cats pajamas! From the way she talks, to her looks, to how she interacted with Nanosec. Shes got a nice dialect, a pleasant speech, talking fit for the papers (im trying shut up) and is overall just a neato character? I liked having her around. It was a shame they didn't bring her in more. A disappointment, a travesty, unfair.

Verdict:7/10. Bring her home, shes a catch, the top fish, a total dame who takes things slow.

Powel!!;

He proves you can't trust a bitch with a Mullet. He just...sucks. its his clear intentions though, so hes...good? At sucking?? He's just that bitch in class that deserves nothing but has EVERYTHING. It sucks.

OKAY I’m finally getting to these!!!

Why I like them: Uh I mean. Can I just. Scream for a bit? I took one look at this underdog dark horse character and was like “I can see him being my favorite so I’m going to try not to have him be my favorite, and instead love this zoom zoom boy instead” … and here we areBut he’s incredibly relatable. That really really wanting something and trying your best and still failing. (and then trying and trying and working hard and then actually surprised when you succeed) I just…Felt that in my homesteadAnd I recognize that a lot of the way I write him and my HCs are me projecting on to him… but I think that adds to why I like him. There’s just enough that I relate to project onto. Iono. I like him a lot. I just think he’s neat.

I see it a lot I have a strong HC that he wouldn’t just do that. I’m so opinionated about it I wrote fic about it.

A wish: It would be really neato if he was placed in Class A

Do you think Grindelwald was manipulating/grooming Dumbledore like he did Credence?

The TL;DR answer is - Yes I do. But we don’t know enough about who the characters were when they were younger to know for sure if that WAS ALL. When you spend that much time with someone there is NO WAY you won’t develop some kind of feelings for them.

The long answer - I think Grindelwald’s initial intentions were to use Dumbledore and manipulate him to get what he wanted. Dumbledore is powerful and very clever and he has a lot of paralleled traits with Grindelwald. I think they both saw similarities in each other they hadn’t found in anyone else before and it drew them inevitably together.

I believe Grindelwald was married to his cause however so I don’t think; at least at first, that he had any other intentions for Dumbledore then his uses.

But they spent something like a year together. Based on Dumbledores’ words I think they must have shared many special things and moments together even beyond just Grindelwalds obsession with his cause. No one is totally without emotions unless they are a literal psychopath (which is an anomaly that actually shows up in brain scans. Neato!). I don’t think Grindelwald is a psychopath, although he can certainly come off as cold and heartless.

Assuming he doesn’t have some OTHER motivations we haven’t been made aware of yet I base my assumptions around the fact that Grindelwald cares a LOT about wizards and witches. He is OUTRAGED for all his magical kind and that they are under a forced oppression. He is FURIOUS because he knows that the muggles have done terrible things to his brethen in the past. Witches and wizards outnumbered and killed out of fear. Imagine the salem witch trials in the harry potter world? And at the time of Grindelwalds youth that history REALLY wouldn’t be that far behind them. But the communities have grown. Witches and wizards are many and surely together they can defend themselves against the muggle threat, right? Anyway. You get my point. He feels emotions. He is human, he isn’t a psychopath by my personal deductions.

So I think whether he wanted to or not Grindelwald has a deep bond with Dumbledore. He may have intended to just manipulate Dumbledore but it became something more then that. I wonder even if it happened before or after the blood pact pendant; was that all just a ploy to ensure Dumbledore would never hurt him? Or was it honestly a bond between them? I dont know. But its my personal headcanon that it’s both. I think after a time Grindelwald realized Dumbledore would be one of the few people who could stop him one day if things didn’t work out but I also believe he came to care deeply about Dumbledore. I don’t think he likes admitting it to himself. I do believe that is why he acts so jealous and needy in the movies whenever its related to someone who is close to Dumbledore. I think he cared and I think he still does. I think maybe he even loved Dumbledore (and since Im an ADAMANT GRINDELDORE FAN THIS IS MY PREFERENCE), perhaps the only time he really did love someone. But as mentioned above.. Grindelwald is married to his work and his cause. He believes he is the avatar for something GREAT in the history books and that he will bring about freedom to wizards and witches. And he is willing to sacrifice everything to reach his goal. Even if it means compromising himself.
