Happy Friday!! How about ❝  i’m not gonna pretend anymore.  i’m still fucked up from it all and i don’t know when it gets better.  ❞ from the emotionally charged sentence starters? For a pairing of your choice?
Thank you for the prompt! For @dadrunkwriting, a bit of pre-dorianders.
---
"What's he doing?"
"I don't know, he just stands there." Both men are scrubbing and peeling potatoes for the communal kitchen of Skyhold, while they keep glaring at the prisoner holding his face towards the sun. "Maybe he just likes sunlight."
"Don't get much of sunlight down in the dungeon."
"Not sure about letting him run around out here." The man throws the potato in a tub of water and picks another from the basket. "That Kirkwall mage blew up a whole chantry."
The other man scoffs. "He's ain't hiding bombs under them robes."
"How would you know?"
"Shut up. The Commander wouldn't let him out here without checking."
Dorian lets his attention wander from the potato peelers to the mage and Commander in question. Cullen sits on a pile of planks, frowning at a paper in his hand. Dorian saunters over and clears his throat to draw his attention.
"What do you want, Dorian?" Cullen's voice carries the familiar tension of a blaring headache.
"Bad day, my dear Commander?"
"No."
The Kirkwall mage, Anders, steps out of the sun, closer to Cullen and him. He wipes a strain of hair from his face. The magic suppressing wristbands glitter for a second as the light hits them. "He has a headache and he doesn't want to see a healer for it."
The frown on Cullen's forehead seems to grow with every second. "I'm not letting you have your magic to heal me."
Dorian lets a purple drop of light run over the back of his hand. "Yes, yes, magic, so dangerous."
Anders giggles. A delightful sound that causes a smile to spread on Dorian's face, without his allowance.
"I don't need magic to set your neck," Anders says with a shrug.
Cullen looks up, wincing at the movement. "My neck?"
"You can't even turn your head right." Anders gestures at Cullen's posture. "Probably a pinched nerve at the back of your head and at your lower back. You're practically listing to the side. But what do I know, I'm just a healer."
"And you don't need magic to fix it?" For once, Cullen doesn't even frown.
"We just need a bench or something for you to lie down on. And I need Dorian too."
Dorian raises an eyebrow at Anders. "Many people think they need me, but I'm not so generous with my attention."
"Pff," Cullen snorts. "As if attention isn't the only thing of interest for you."
"Gentlemen," Anders says before they can snipe at each other. "I see a bench in the shade there, it would be perfect for this. Shall we?"
After some huffing, just for show, Dorian finds himself at the end of the bench, holding Cullen's ankle. "I have you known, my speciality is decidedly not healing."
Anders chuckles. "I'm aware. I assure you, we have no need for your speciality. At least I hope."
"What?" Cullen, flat on his stomach on the bench, struggles to get up.
"A joke, Commander," Anders says. "Relax." He shakes his head with a smile, blond hair brushing over the edges of his lips. When he leans forward, his hair swings like a curtain, hiding his eyes. He places his fingers on Cullen's back, the wristbands jingling, and feels along his spine through his shirt. Then he stops and presses hard. Cullen groans as Anders moves along his spine. "Now, pull on his leg, hard."
"If my parents could see me now," Dorian grumbles as he pulls.
A strange sound comes from Cullen and Anders lifts his hands. "There, you can stop pulling now."
Dorian shakes out his hands, a bit more dramatic than necessary. Anders grins at him as he helps Cullen to sit up and places his fingers at the back of Cullen's neck. "Turn your head, slowly."
There is a sound like gnashing teeth, loud enough for Dorian to hear, and Anders drops his hands. "There. Slow movements for the next half hour. Frankly, you should rest, but I doubt you're the kind of person who knows how to do that."
"How about you take a rest in your office," Dorian says. "And I will watch over Anders. I even promise to check his robes for explosives."
Cullen rolls his eyes. "No need for that. Just make sure that he stays inside these walls and doesn't have access to magic. And some people do not think favourably of him, so be careful where you're taking him." Cullen leaves with a nod, walking straight and easily, almost a swing in his steps.
"You've changed that man's life," Dorian says. But when he looks back at Anders, he doesn't see the expected smile on his face. "Are you alright?"
Anders lets out a bitter laugh. "No, I'm not alright. I had an exceptional amount of shit days, recently. I’m still fucked up from it all, and I don’t know when it'll get better."
Dorian thinks for a moment. "Come with me, I want to show you something." He walks towards the side of the castle that holds the camps of the Redcliffe mages. A few new barracks have been built since the last time he was here. The layout of this city inside the castle keeps changing, but Dorian soon finds the tent he is looking for.
"Merribella, are you there?" he calls outside of the tent flap.
"Is it that damn Altus again?" comes from the inside.
Dorian turns to Anders. "One of the few who actually remembers that it's Altus, not Magister." He shoves the tent flap to the side. "My dear, I have someone with me I'd like you to meet."
A large woman with a child on her arm and a face that shows the traces of long, harsh years, stands in the middle of her tent and frowns at him. "I'm not dealing with another tevinter peacock."
"He is most definitely not a peacock, tevinter or other." Dorian steps aside and gestures for Anders to come in. "This is my reluctant friend Merribella and this —" he steps to the side, "— is Anders of Kirkwall."
Merribella stares at Anders, her mouth hanging open, until her expression slowly turns into a smile. "Anders, the rebel mage."
Anders fidgets with his hands. "I'm not sure..."
"Not everyone hates you, you know?" Dorian says.
Merribella's eyes snap to him and understanding dawns on her face. She lifts the baby in her arm to show it to Anders. "This is my grandson." She looks at Anders. "His name is Anders. He is a free child of a mage and will grow up with his family."
Dorian will never admit how many tears he shed this afternoon, but the kohl around his eyes is unsalvageable by the time he brings Anders back to the castle.
"Thank you," Anders says quietly.
"Don't mention it." Dorian sighs. "I'm serious. Don't mention this to anybody, I have a reputation to uphold."
"Of course," Anders says and faster than Dorian can react, he presses a kiss to Dorian's cheek. "You're still beautiful, by the way," he whispers near Dorian's ear.
A guard takes Anders back to his cell. He looks over his shoulder at Dorian, smiling, glowing like a ray of sun, before the door closes behind him. For a long while, Dorian stands rooted to the spot.
"So," he says to himself. "This is that, then." His heart has no right to jump in his chest like this. No right at all.

WIP Wheneversday indeed!
tagged by delightful and glorious @barbex @cleverblackcat and @rosella-writes!
Dorian glanced over his shoulder.  “Shall we continue this discussion somewhere more private?”   “Trying to get me alone?” Anders answered, fluttering his eyes with exaggerated coyness.   Dorian started to walk away - no, swagger; he'd been around Isabela too long not to recognize a swagger when he saw it.  “Only if you say no.  Otherwise, I’m succeeding, aren’t I?”

A Chance Encounter
Teen & Up Audiences, Black Emporium Exchange 2021
Fandoms: Dragon Age Inquisition, Dragon Age II Relationships: Anders/Dorian Pavus Characters: Dorian Pavus, Anders, Varric Tethras, M!Lavellan, M!Hawke, Sera, Cassandra Pentaghast, Cullen Rutherford, Justice
The Inquisition happens on an unlikely person during what was meant to be a normal rift-closing outing. Dorian takes an interest in the mage they've just met, and soon truths come out that heighten that fascination. A meeting of fate that then becomes an unlikely friendship... and more?
The healer hesitated, eyes darting away as he stood. “You said you’re an inquisitor? Inquisitor of what?” Four pairs of eyes blinked at him in confusion, Sera having found her way to them after making sure the area was clear of any further threats. “How’s he not heard?” Sera asked, disbelief clear in her voice and on her face. “I need to know if you’re with the Chantry,” the healer replied defensively, hand at his staff again.  Dorian rolled his eyes. “Andraste’s tears, we’re not Templars, if that’s what you’re asking. Southern Circles are an atrocity, I would never hang around such a place as would have chained me so.” Whatever the reason was, the stand-off the healer was giving them was quickly becoming unamusing the longer they stood in the cold under a darkening sky. “Now, if you please, we can spend our time distrusting each other in the damp cold of these woods, or we can find our way to your house and help Cassandra.” The healer’s eyebrows arched in surprise, he considered this, nodding without conviction. “Can you walk?” He addressed Cassandra, as Mahanon and Sera helped her stand.

Hey and welcome! Interested to see what you do with #10: “Excuse me. Excuse me! Yes, you. You’re sitting in my seat.” from the Dialogue prompts - maybe for Dorian and a character of your choice. Happy writing!
Thanks for the awesome prompt! Here's a little Dorian x Anders in a modern AU for @dadrunkwriting.
---
“Excuse me. Excuse me!" Dorian stalks forward, down the thin aisle of the plane, glaring more deeply as he goes. “Yes, you.” He reaches the interloper and stops the spot. “You’re sitting in my seat.”
The man looks up, recognition dawning that he’s being spoken to, but without a hint that he understands why.
“Yes, I’m talking to you,” Dorian adds. He drops his bag into the aisle, narrowly missing another passenger’s foot. Instead of apologizing, he glares at the stranger, until she looks away. He knows it’s not charitable, but it happens — it’s been a long day… week… year…
“Uh, sorry — “ The man pauses, looking down at the worn blue vinyl cushion beneath his thighs, as if a number will appear. When he can’t find one, he looks back up, a glint of blue in his eyes — there and then gone — and then he shrugs. “I’m sorry — I didn’t realize they were assigned.” He smiles gently, then, looking contrite, but Dorian has no patience for this; he his teeth, and huffs out a breath.
“Well, they are. This isn’t one of those budget-airlines that lets everyone free-for-all at boarding…” He sighs. He should have been sitting in first class — would have been, if things had gone differently… if his life was different… but a plane this small has only one cabin, where he has to duck to avoid a head injury.
“So, which seat are you supposed to be in?” asks the man.
Dorian barely avoids a growl as he produces his ticket and holds it up to the idiot’s face. “14B — it’s the aisle.”
“Ahh,” says the man. “My mistake. I thought it went alphabetically in from the aisle. I’m 14A.” He picks up his things — painstakingly slowly — and moves over toward the window. About halfway through, he looks back up at Dorian and asks, “You’re sure you wouldn’t rather just switch?”
Dorian’s eyes widen.
“Enough said,” the man raises his palms in surrender and scoots across the vinyl with a squeak.
“Thank you,” growls Dorian. He sits heavily; his knees barely avoid banging into the tray table of the seat in front of him. He notices absently that the man next to him has to turn his knees out unnaturally in order to avoid the same fate — he must be tall. Whatever.
“Home or work?” the stranger asks suddenly.
“What?” snaps Dorian.
“Are you heading home or going to work somewhere?”
“Oh…” Dorian wipes a hand across his eyes. He’s so tired. “Both… or…Neither… I…” but his words dry up. He’s going to his ancestral homeland, but he’s not going home. He’s not traveling for work, but there is work to be done.
Before he has a chance to say more, though, the man interrupts his train of thought by saying, “Don’t worry. I get it.”
Dorian looks up at him, surprised.
“I don’t have a super clear picture of where I’m headed yet, either,” admits the man. Then he extends his hand toward Dorian. “I’m Anders.”
Dorian cocks his head to the side. Without moving he says, “I’m Dorian…”
Anders continues to hold his hand in midair — a gesture of good will or a threat, Dorian can’t tell. “Nice to meet you, Dorian.”
An awkward silence, and Anders keeps waiting. Dorian wonders why — is there a space for ‘friendly’ in this world? — but he’s curious, so hesitantly, he reaches across the armrest and makes tentative contact. Anders’ hands are warm and soft.
“Nice to meet you too, Anders.”

30+M here looking for some MxM with someone 25+! Not comfortable with female writers or characters, sorry.
Baldur’s Gate 3: Looking for Astarion for my trans male/NB Chaotic Fairy Tav.
Dragon Age: Looking for either Dorian, Anders, or mage M!Hawke for my Fenris.
I have a few more D&D OCs that can be offered as well if interested, other than that I don’t really do doubles. But maybe?
Discord is preferred for the time being.
I can do either paragraph or chat format.
For paragraph, I don’t do word counts, and prefer quality over quantity. I consider myself an advanced/literate writer.
Like for contact!

TLDR at the bottom, as I know this became very long. My apologies.
I would really like to clarify first that I am not arguing with you or attempting to make you like her and am just attempting to explain my stance since you seemed confused about specifically this: as someone who is very solidly for mage rights in the Dragon Age games and also really likes Vivienne, I do think you overestimate how many fans she has? Which is completely understandable as fandom has cooled a little bit in the last few years, which means there’s less discourse posts floating around, but it used to be that if I found Vivienne content it was vitriolic towards her—she has a canonical Ao3 tag labeled “Vivienne (Dragon Age) Is A Bitch” for example.
We’re not prone to criticizing her character on the regular because she already gets a lot of it, on about the same level as Anders (whom I also am very fond of) and most of it has already been said before.
For examples though, her arguments about mages are genuinely infuriating and make little sense.
She is fantastically racist in the game, which is also very frustrating, though to be fair to her, I’m having trouble thinking of a companion who isn’t at some point or another without ability to correct them (Dorian supporting slavery and his “elven harpy” comment towards, Cole’s “Never trust half an elf” comment which is bad regardless of if they were intending it to be about Michel, Solas and Sera’s everything unfortunately, etc. all come to mind.) Maybe Bull, Leliana, or Josie? I can’t remember them being so off the top of my head.
These things do suck and most Vivienne fans (except for a few, but typically fans who support the fantasy Catholic Church aren’t going to be the type of fans who will bother caring about a Black woman—they’ll usually go for Cullen, the white straight man who is anti-mage and who the narrative actually cares about) are very aware of her flaws, but generally we think it was a very stupid idea to have the first Black companion (that they will actually admit to being Black anyway, unlike Isabela who got whitewashed and Morrigan and Cole, who never really have the fact that they are mixed Black acknowledged or shown in the games) support the oppressive system and use her as a mouthpiece for a conservative agenda.
(Using characters as a mouthpiece for whatever agenda the devs are trying to push with little regard to their actual characters is a very common thing in Inqusition—ex. at one point they have Cole say Cullen was a “good Templar who remembered the mages are people” when Cullen literally has a line in 2 saying “Mages aren’t people like you and me.” which is a direct quote from him, and even though Cole should by all rights be terrified by Cullen. Also, all of Varric’s Inquisition characterization.)
I mean, her companion quest is just there to have you distrust her briefly (the quest is named after a classic villain line and the youth potion paper) before “surprising” the player with the the fact that she… has layers? Cares about someone? Which is so… incredibly stupid on the Dev’s parts for a variety of reasons that if I talk about now I will start getting genuinely angry over.
I also think she has some very redeeming qualities. I personally found that she was very compassionate towards an Inquisitor she was friends with. It doesn’t stop her from being opportunistic, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing necessarily. I think this bit specifically is probably something we won’t agree on however, since we have very different readings on these moments, so I’m going keep it at that.
None of this is meant to convince you to like her at all, but I wanted to explain my perspective in doing so since you seemed confused about it.
TLDR: I, and many other pro-mage Vivienne fans, are aware of her flaws, but we think that was a terrible writing decision and do see several redeemable qualities in her character. None of this is meant to sway you in your dislike of her, but I wanted to explain my perspective since you said you didn’t understand how someone could like Vivienne and be pro-mage.
(P.S. I am very sorry if any of this comes off as condescending or if this was completely unwelcome. I’m autistic and have a hard time with tone, both reading it and delivering it. I’m working on it, but I’m still not good at tone over text.)
I. I understand all of this. I’ve criticized the fact they made the first black companion a huge bitch and a bigot against her own kind from the second it became clear that was her personality? But her being the first black companion also doesn’t innately make her a good character. Being a minority doesn’t make what a character does automatically ok or less bad, and idealization is dehumanization as much as villainizing is. It makes BioWare’s writers and their decisions gross, and their agenda gross, any anyone who uses her sucking as an excuse to be racist or disproportionately hateful to only the black companion horrible, but it at the same time doesn’t just…make her good, or ok.
She’s written stupidly, but the character they made is a bigot given no real character growth who tries to ruin the advances for mage rights even if you put forth the best possible outcomes (Lelianna Divine, allied Mages) and befriended Vivienne. She straight sucks. She does. She is a bad, selfish, emotionally manipulative person with no empathy for those of her kind less privileged than her, and a species traitor. (Or whatever? Can’t think of a better thing to categorize Mages as. Class??) It’s not like I only complain about her. I’ve been just as liberal complaining about Doriana and Sera and every other fucked up choice the Devs made. If you’ve seen anything I posted the past week, you’ve probably seen me having a meltdown over how utterly unsalvagable Inquisition is as a game. As for Viv herself, she’s not devoid of good qualities. She’ll be nice if she’s your friend, you’re right, but you have to be kind of terrible to befriend her at all, and so? So is everyone on the planet. That’s what fair weather friends /are/. But beyond that, yeah. She’s not all evil. She cared about the guy she was mistress to. She’s not a monster. But she high key is a terrible person and sucks. You’re right, the devs making her quest a quote from the Queen from Snow White of all things, to encourage a player to lie to her, is fucked up. So is literally everything they did to her. So is how they treated Bull, and Dorian, and Sera, and all kinds of things. But that doesn’t make the character good.
From your own description, you don’t actually like canon Vivienne. You like the HC version you rewrote in your head. And that’s fair, and it’s a fair way to say fuck you to the devs—I do the same with Solas. But you’ll never see me not absolutely accusing the shit out of canon end game Trespasser Solas—he’s a racial supremacist genocide intellectual dude bro, which is a horrific choice for the devs to make esp considering his preTrespasser characterization, but that’s still what he was. I can ignore that and make my HCs, but I’m not going to pretend canon wasn’t what it is. It was. And I wasn’t complaining I see alternate takes on Vivienne, but that I see people talk about Canon Viv like she’s a girlboss while claiming to be pro mage, and those things just concretely do not and cannot go together. And that complaint absolutely stands. It’s cool and even good to hc and rewrite her as a different person. But that’s not canon Viv anymore then, it’s an OC that should have been in the game.
#ask#anonymous#I’m sick of people wanting to argue with me about dragon age so I’m not tagging this sorry people who filter my blog I usually put you first#but I can’t take it anymore#I am also sick of people arbitrarily liking charcaters who suck because they’re hot or because they’re X and then ignoring or excusing every#terrible thing they do or ignoring it compeltely and it happens all the time in everything and I’m allowed to be annoyed by things that#annoy me. it annoys me I don’t see people complain about Dorian being pro slavery or even hesitate to romance him over it. it annoys me Sera#is a bigot to elves and will try to forcibly convert a lover to Fantasy Catholicism or break up. it annoys me Varric is a massive bitch in#Inquisition in many ways but everyone loves him. it annoys me he refused to speak to my husband ONCE even in the event of my death to tell#him I died. it annoys me he will Stan Iza after the end of Act2 but flips on Anders like a griddle cake. it annoys me he’s a centrist and no#one criticizes that. it annoys me Aveline is a bastard cop in DA2 and I don’t see people criticize that. it annoys me Cassandra won’t tell#Mages how to reverse tranquility and no one I see talks about it. it annoys me they Tommy Gun’d Solas’ charcater from the entire game in#Trespasser and I see people stan him or hate him but no one talk about how fucked up the message the devs flipped on a dime to push with#Trespasser was. and it annoys me Vivienne is a huge bitch and a bigot but i either see people complain only that she’s mean or Stan her as a#girlboss and ignore the fact she’s specist and horribly anti mage and a class/species traitor who doesn’t get better#and it annoys me MUCH MORE than ALL of these things that the fault Leo’s with BioWare eroding it’s ethics to a point of toxicity utterly#*Lies With#unlivable and as little as I see complaints about any of the above I still see them more than people calling to break down doors if that#dumbass white Canadians’ game company and wring their necks for every horrific racist anti-minority-action centrist#fascist religious oligarchy supremacist bullshit take they shoved down every player’s throat in Inquisitiom

New Chapter - Deck of Many Dragons
Tumblr media
Chapter 98: Three of Pentacles
UPRIGHT: Teamwork, collaboration, learning, implementation
REVERSED: Disharmony, misalignment, working alone
The Three of Pentacles is all about teamwork. Every member of the team brings something special to the table. The Cleric brings healing, the Fighter has a strong sword, the Rogue can open any door, and the Bard will make sure the guards are all looking the other way. The job is going to get done and we’re all going to get paid today as long as everyone does their part. When reversed, this card warns that there’s some imbalance happening - some lack of trust or ability that’s going to impede you from reaching your goal. It might seem easiest to just do it all yourself, but success probably does not lie in that direction.

Underneath the Bough, Ch. 52
Tumblr media
And with that, Underneath the Bough is completely posted!
Summary: Family. Legacy. Respect. Dorian bartered away his freedom and independence to purchase them when he’d resigned himself to walk the path his father had designed for him. His shackles chafed, even as he toed the line diligently, marrying a woman he loved but couldn’t be in love with, having a son he was mortified of disappointing- It was almost enough to build a life from, until disease rendered both his son and his marriage feeble. A visit from a mysterious doctor threatens to turn his household, his world, and his heart upside-down. NOTE: This is a Halward “wins” AU (in the Victorian era, where homosexuality is still outlawed in the UK), where Dorian is pressured into marrying, having a family, and continuing the Pavus legacy and the consequences of that choice. As such, one of the major themes is societal homophobia, so be aware before reading.
Fandom: Dragon Age Rating: Explicit Word Count: 270k Pairings: Dorian Pavus / Anders, Almila Pavus/Anders, Dorian Pavus/Almila Pavus Chapters: 52/52 Read More: From the top; Chapter 52
Excerpt below the cut!
When had he grown so bloody old ? Golden hair turned completely silver, wrinkled that crossed his forehead and branched from his eyes.
So many damned buckles on his blazer. Anders cursed under his breath, fumbling with the steel catches, swathes of blue silk crossing his chest in a bewildering array of patterns. It was a beautiful suit, of course it was, just like its designer, but Dorian had always been more capable of pulling off flash than Anders and he felt a bit of a fool when he realized he’d misaligned the collar and had to begin all over again.
“Very nice.” Dorian rested his chin on Anders’ shoulder, smoothing his hands down his sides. “My general.”
“Would you mind helping me with these?” Anders quirked a brow. Amazing, how the sound of his voice could still summon butterflies after such a long time. “We’re going to be late if I’m left to my own devices.”
“We might well be late if you’re left to mine.” Whiskers against his neck, brushing beneath his jaw, but Dorian finished buckling the suit into place.
