Arya and Dori have just switched power sets! How long does it take them to realize, and what sort of chaos do they cause?
They probably don't notice for quite a while, since Arya usually relies on the more siren-y side of their powers, and Dori normally just shapeshifts into other people, something which Arya is very capable of doing. It only changes if Arya attempts to shapeshift into a non-humanoid form (like Mothman- they enjoy doing that) or Dori accidentally shapeshifts into an animal or other non-human form. (I can see them getting stuck as an octopus and having to slink home in that form)

hi sam! do you have any recommendations for good sources of info for someone who'd like to learn more about cons and con artists? Any format is fine, books, podcasts, youtube, whatever, i'm just having a hard time finding a good source that really digs into and examines the actual techniques and 'mechanics' so to speak.
It is a little bit tough because of course most scammers are also self-embroidering liars :D And my education was very patchwork. For specifically cons and con artists (outside of art crime, which generally doesn't touch the con world directly) I'd advise starting with "Titanic Thompson: The Man Who Bet On Everything" by Kevin Cook, which is a biography of one of the early 20th century's most preeminent con men; it's a good tale but it also demonstrates the general life trajectory of con men, which can be pretty grim. Most cons end up in prison, and even those that don't or that get out tend to die poor and alone, because they can't stop scamming.
The Mark Inside by Amy Reading is one that I don't remember vividly but I did write a review of here, and I think it's another good starting place. (All the links following are to reviews I did.) If you've ever watched The Sting, which is a movie about con artists and also kind of a good primer, it's based on The Professional Thief by Edwin Sutherland, which is an anthropology of professional crime in the early 20th century. While technically it was written less by him than by an anonymous contact of his in the criminal underworld, that doesn't mean it's accurate per se; we only have that writer's word that any of it is true, so again, read skeptically.
I'd have to look up which piece it was because there's been a lot about her, but if you give Doris Payne a google she's another great example of a fascinating person who is just a giant liar. She paints a very vivid picture of her own career, but if you read about her later years you do realize that she's still conning everyone (she attempts to swindle at least one journalist working with her) and has nothing to show for her career, which may be a pack of lies to begin with. A lot of her stories have been fact checked and found wanting. I'd read up on the life of Victor Lustig as well; he's most famously known as the man who fraudulently sold the Eiffel Tower (twice) but I don't have a good biography offhand.
In your reading you will probably run across Han Van Meegeren, who forged Vermeers and ripped off the art world with them, then was tried for colluding with Nazis because he sold Nazis many "Vermeers" -- he had to paint a Vermeer while in prison to prove he'd forged the ones he sold the Nazis. This is a charming story but until very recently it was not widely noted that Van Meegeren was ABSOLUTELY A BIG NAZI HIMSELF. I was suckered by the story for years and I know most people were, so if you encounter media about him that does not include this fact, and you're interested in his story, look for newer scholarship.
There's a tangentially related book, "Where The Money Was" by Willie Sutton and Edward Linn, that is the semi-autobiography of a bank robber and it's very fun and funny, so despite not being directly about crime, I'd recommend that one.
The Napoleon Of Crime by Ben MacIntyre is a biography of the man who Moriarty was purportedly based on; it's sort of related rather than direct, but I recall enjoying it and there's a fascinating example of the VERY rare times when art heists are for a specific piece rather than for a specific goal.
There's a podcast called Scam Goddess that I found...enjoyable and informative, but also not very well-researched. In particular some of the earlier episodes are really poorly fact-checked. That said, she reads out letters from people writing in to discuss their scams and she talks about a lot of famous scam stories, so as long as you listen with the knowledge that she's neither a researcher nor an expert you should be okay.
Provenance by Laney Salisbury and Aly Sujo is what I'll close with, because it's about the interplay between art crime and con artistry, but it's also a strong argument for not valorizing cons; it's a documentation of how a couple of criminals out for nothing more than a quick buck really fucked up the entire system by which we authenticate art, and did insane levels of damage to genuine art scholarship. This isn't a little guy punching up against millionaire art collectors or fat cat museums, the way the narrative is often framed; art crime like this, involving forged or altered provenances, really harms art historians and the study of art.
I think the study of confidence crime and art crime is absolutely fascinating. There's a lot to learn about social engineering and society itself. But I think if I can impart to you one piece of wisdom, it's that con men are never, ever out for anyone but themselves and have no qualms or hesitations about hurting you to get what they want. The romance of con artistry often fools journalists and sophisticated researchers as well, so it's very easy to get swept up in it, but you should approach the entire genre with the attitude that everything you read has a 75% chance of being a charming work of total fiction.
On that note -- you may enjoy the short stories of O. Henry, some of which are about confidence men; I can't recommend specific titles but his fiction is very enjoyable generally, at least in my opinion.

One Dress a Day Challenge
Anything Goes December
Miracle on 34th Street / Natalie Wood as Susan Walker
Susan has a couple of nice winter coats in this movie. I picked this double-breasted plaid one for three reasons. First, because it's a nice item in itself. Second, because Maureen O'Hara (as Doris Walker) and John Payne (as Fred Gailey) also have terrific costumes in the scene where it appears--just look at that gorgeous overcoat and perfectly sloped hat on Payne! And third, because I couldn't resist a chance to screencap Natalie Wood giving some truly epic sideye.
The tailoring on the coat is very nice: note how the stripes line up between the body and the sleeves. It also has a belt in the back to adjust the fit. With it, Susan wears a hood-style hat with rosettes over the ears, probably of felt.
This was always my favorite of the classic Christmas movies. Remakes? What remakes?

(Please don't save me
Please don't save me now)
You did good, $lick
It's a smash
Ayey, ayy
Look at me in my eyes
There ain't shit that sweet
I just spent a mil on my detox in a week
I been countin' pills, fuck is countin' sheep
Tryna stack my money, this peace of mind ain't cheap
It won't be long 'til I'm long gone
Yeah, scarring up my arms somewhere in a foreign (skrrrt)
Everywhere I go, feelin' like I don't belong
Thinkin' about my OG's that I swore that was wrong
I just wanna ease my stress, I just wanna smile
Breakin' down in tears from my trauma as a child
Breakin' down in tears from the trauma happenin' now
1800-PAIN, that's the number you have dialed
All my friends is dyin', I'm ridin' in style
Tryna touch my heart, that's gon' take a while
Thank God for my brother, what the fuck would I do without Kyle?
Thank God for my brothers not leavin' me an only child
Whole gang 'round, but still I'm by myself
I need a high now, I'll trade it for my health
No matter where I go, this Glock up on my belt
Yeah, got me feelin' low, I fuck around and felt
I just checked my bag, baby, I ain't got much left
Just let me hit this line before I turn to myself
Stole their peace of mind, I'm Doris Payne with the theft
Gaslight 'em all, make 'em blame it on their self
Fentanyl in my veins like I'm waitin' on the end
Hope they learn from me and the places that I've been

Looking At You Makes Me Feel Complete
by red_panda28
Though, to be honest, Harry was mostly just watching Louis. The way his black vest, threadbare from wear, was clinging to his torso and every now and then it would ride up his stomach and ex-pose a hint of abs when Louis stretched. The way his dark grey skinny jeans hugged his legs, accentuating the curve of his arse and show-ing off thick, muscular thighs. Harry wanted so live between those thighs. The worst was the way just Louis’ presence alone seemed to brighten up the space every time he entered the room.

For Kayla and Dori please!
👁️💥💐🕷️🔪🌈 and ❤️ (there's so many good questions!!)
👁️ EYE - what colour are their eyes? do people notice their eyes? is there anything special about them (shows emotion easily, literally magical…)?
Kayla has very dark brown eyes, which contrast with her very pale skin quite nicely, but people don't often notice them because they're just brown eyes.
Dori's a mutant who can shapeshift into any humanoid form, so they have had many different eye colors depending on what form they're in. However, in their "true form", they have dark brown eyes.
💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with?
Kayla doesn't handle anger very well. While she's not explosive or vengeful or anything like that, she doesn't particularly enjoy the feeling of being angry, and often she internalizes it and ends up falling into self-sabotaging spirals.
Dori doesn't really do well with sadness. As an upbeat, peppy person, sadness just really gets to them, and they usually end up getting more depressed than a normal person if something happens that they can't put a positive spin on.
💐 BOUQUET - create a bouqet for them! what do those flowers mean? are any of the flowers their particular favourite?
Despite me being a florist IRL, I'm not super familiar with the language of flowers so I'm gonna go Google that rq
Kayla: Alstroemeria (friendship), yellow orchid (new beginnings) asphodel (death, the underworld), red spider lily (death and rebirth), snapdragon (deception), purple violet (lesbian love)
Dori: Alstroemeria (friendship), snapdragon (deception), gardenia (secret love), black dahlia (dishonesty), ivy (endurance), vervain (protection against evil), protea (courage and transformation)
🕷️ SPIDER - what is their biggest fear? do they have any irrational/mundane fears?
Both Kayla and Dori have an intense fear of failing their self-declared mission- for Kayla, rescuing the Winter Soldier, and for Dori, getting access to HYDRA's main database so they can tear it apart from the inside out.
Also, Kayla is intensely afraid of spiders and snakes.
Dori is slightly afraid of the ocean.
🔪 KNIFE - how do they react to injury/misfortune befalling their loved ones (significant other, family, friends)? do they put themselves at blame?
If something was to happen to someone Kayla loved, she would work tirelessly to help them, often at her own detriment.
Dori would immediately rush in to help the person, though they would try to leave most of the more important stuff to professionals.
🌈 RAINBOW - what advice would they give to their younger self?
Kayla would advise her younger self not to trust anyone, especially not her great-uncle. (well minus Dori, they're a sweetheart)
Dori would advise their younger self to master their shapeshifting abilities as soon as possible, rather than trying to suppress it.
❤️ RED HEART - their love language(s)?
For Kayla, it's definitely acts of service. Kayla has a tendency to give of herself until there's nothing left for her to give.
Dori's love language is definitely physical touch. They're constantly giving Kayla little squeezes on the shoulder or hugs just to tell her that they love her.

23-26 for writing!
23.  Favourite author
So first, I'm going to say Toni Morrison because in my previous semester of college I whipped up an essay about her. 😂 While I am not a fan of purple prose, I respect her for tackling hard topics such as colorism, toxic masculinity, and the effects of racism in American society. But more than that, Toni is from Ohio, like me, and she has used Ohio for numerous books (namely The Bluest Eye, Sula, and Beloved). She essentially once said in an interview that no matter where she sets her book, she always visualizes the setting as being Ohio since it's her hometown. And honestly? I felt that. Then there's Alice Walker, who I have a complicated relationship with. On one hand, I consume her writing more easily (and obsessively) than I do Morrison's. On the other hand, as she got older she developed beliefs that had me like 🥴🥴 When it comes to modern authors, I enjoy Bernice McFadden. I own so many of her books that I can spot concepts being reused and repeated by her, but I adore how a universal theme within her works revolves around her protagonist's family trees with so much rich detail.
I'm also going to say I like James McBride. Granted, I wasn't the biggest fan of The Good Lord Bird, but I did like his memoirs and his 'more recent' short story collection.
24.  Favourite genre to write and read
When it comes to reading, I enjoy historical fiction -or non-fiction- and memoirs. Historical topics I enjoy reading about are the Harlem Renaissance and The Great Migration. Memoirs can really be about anything - the life and crimes of the jewel thief Doris Payne? I have that on my shelf. The recollection of a biracial man being raised by his Jewish mother? I have that, too. As long as the premise is interesting, I consume it as quickly as I can consume fiction. Plus, memoirs inspire the way I choose to write characters because of the 'rawness' that can be found in someone's life, if that makes sense. I like writing crime (with that being said I've never found a book about organized crime that I like!) and slice of life. 25.  Favourite part of writing Dialogue. Sometimes outlining my work can get me hyped too. 26.  Favourite writing program
I somewhat like Scrivener. It has a lot of useful features like the ability to organize and separate scenes, but I really just use Google Docs because the accessibility is easier on me. 😂😂

Do our eyes deceive us or did Black excellence overtake the Emmy Awards? Of the 27 categories, five were won by Black actors, prompting host Anthony Anderson to refer to the show as the “chocolate” Emmys.
And we can’t contain our pride!
Quinta Brunson became the first black actress to win lead actress in a comedy since Isabel Sanford took home the trophy for her role on The Jeffersons in 1981!
And she also made history when she and Ayo Edebiri, who won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Show, became the first two black actresses to win both comedy categories in the same year.
Niecy Nash-Betts picked up her first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie while “RuPaul’s Drag Race” won for reality competition show for the eighth time. (RuPaul also won best reality host at the Creative Emmys last week, bringing his Emmy total to 14.)
But it’s not just the Black Emmy winners we’re vibing over.
It’s the “Martin” reunion with Martin Lawrence, Tisha Campbell, Carl Anthony Payne II, and Tichina Arnold (it was so extra!) and Marla Gibbs as funny and vibrant as ever presenting alongside Quinta.
And we can’t forget Mama Doris (as in Anthony Anderson’s mother). Never has the show’s timekeeper been such a scene-stealer!

Miracle on 34th (1947, George Seaton)
05/01/2024
Miracle on 34th Street is a 1947 American film written and directed by George Seaton. It starts Maureen O'Hara and John Payne; the plot takes place between Thanksgiving and Christmas in New York and centers on the effects of a department store Santa Claus who claims to be the real Santa Claus.
Having become a Christmas classic, Miracle on 34th Street won three Oscars: best supporting actor for Gwenn, best story for Valentine Davies and best screenplay for Seaton. In 2005 it was chosen for preservation in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.
The Santa Claus who inaugurates the Christmas celebrations at the Macy's department store in New York is drunk, so the dynamic marketing director, Doris Walker, decides to have him replaced by Kris Kringle, an elderly gentleman who had already harshly rebuked the man for his conduct scandalous, and who seems (and personally claims to be) the authentic Santa Claus.
The prosecutor Ed Collins, a friend of Lamberg, as well as the judge, takes pains to obtain the man's interdiction, but Fred, who has given an engagement ring to Doris in vain, assumes Kringle's defense, and, causing a trial, with clever technicalities he manages to get a sentence issued in his favor.
