"Just because all the others never showed you love doesn't mean no one ever will." This one with the Darkling with angst to fluff? Like maybe he keeps pushing the reader away because he's new to affection and doesn't know what to do?
A/n: this request felt so spot on for our favored tortured villain <3 thank you for the message anon!!
Darkling X Reader Word Count: 1656 | Warnings: not proofread, brief mentions of battle, hints at past abuse if you squint, super angst turns to tooth-rotting fluff

Note: dorogoy is the Russian for 'sweetheart' “Leave us.”
The Black General strode in, his eyes murderous and his fists balled at his sides. Despite the warm summer night, the chill in his voice was enough to send a shiver up everyone’s spine. The two Healers rose from the sides of your cot where they’d been tending your injuries. They bowed quickly and kept their eyes glued to the ground as they scuttled out of the tent, leaving you and the Darkling alone.
When the sounds of the retreating Healers’ footsteps had been swallowed in the gentle murmur of the camp outside, his eyes finally met yours. He looked as if he were about to break apart, his body practically abuzz with barely contained rage.
“Aleks, I’m fine,” you chided him, rolling your eyes at his dramatics. “It’s just a burn. I’ll survive.”
Darkness blossomed around him, swallowing the dim candlelight on the inside of your tent. His jaw was clenched so tightly you worried he’d break a tooth, the veins in his forehead pulsing as he tried to regain control of himself. You’d seen his power a thousand times, but even still it startled you. You smoothed your face into a mask of calm, refusing to show him your instinctual fear.
“You almost died, dorogy.” He sank down on the edge of your cot as the shadows receded into him like water soaks into a sponge. “You are decidedly not fine.”
You smiled at him, shifting slightly to make room for him on the cot next to you. He was watching you, his eyes drinking you in. You could hear his next question before he even asked it.
“Are the Healers treating you fairly?” The whisper of a threat hung off Aleksander’s words. You knew that his fear was that the other Grisha would shun you because of his affection for you. A fear you’d tried to quell a thousand times before. If only he knew how terrified the others were of hurting you, of disappointing you, or of otherwise mistreating you…
You reached out, running your fingertips lightly along the back of his hand. He watched you, waiting for an answer.
“They’re treating me perfectly,” you assured him emphatically. “I have everything I need.”
He didn’t respond immediately, transfixed by the circular patterns you wove along the back of his hand. His eyes glazed over, his shoulders dropping slightly as he let the facade of the Black General relax in your presence. You watched him carefully, wondering how he managed to maintain such composure and control in the midst of battle. You’d seen him out there, on the battlefield: an avenging angel, all rage and cruelty, his black kefta fluttering like a flag, cutting down wave after wave of Fjerdan. He’d barely flinched, barely shown any sign of his powers draining him. It filled you with a strange combination of sorrow, pride, and lust.
“Aleks?” Your voice, though quiet and gentle, snapped the moment like a dry twig. He looked up at you expectantly. “Are you alright?”
You could tell as soon as the words left your lips that you’d said something wrong. He recoiled away from you as if he were the one that had been burned. His eyes widened in a mixture of shock and horror, followed immediately by self-loathing. You reached out, but not quick enough. He rose from the cot, stepping away from you.
“How can you ask that of me? After what you saw today? After what I put you through? You want to know if I am alright?” His composure was unraveling, his dark eyes turning into bottomless pits of fury with nowhere to go but inward. He’d once told you that the most unexpected part of living so long was the extent to which he had come to loathe himself. You hadn’t understood it then, but now you caught a glimpse of just how deep Aleksander’s malice towards himself actually went.
The shadows sprung from his fingers with ease, devouring the tent’s light and swarming around you like bees. The air around you crackled with their presence, although they didn’t touch you. Across the tent, consumed by a darkness so complete he almost vanished entirely, Aleksander shook with the explosive force of his power. His chin was tipped back and his mouth open as if screaming, although the only thing pouring out of his throat was more darkness. His eyes lost their whites, now just two blackened sockets, lifeless and unholy-looking.
Terror seized you. Your heart jolted as adrenaline ricocheted through your veins. You knew Aleksander would never hurt you, although you weren’t sure how much  of the man you loved was still with you in that tent.
You called out to him, but somehow your voice vanished in the space between you two. As if you’d been plunged underwater, your scream sounded distorted and dull. Aleksander didn’t even flinch.
Wincing through the pain, you flung your legs over the edge of the cot. The shadows made way for you like a river parts around rocks. The hairs on the back of your arms and neck stood up straight, your instincts screaming at you to run! Leave! Kill him! Get out!
Summoning your strength and with a sharp inhale, you forced your legs to hold your weight as you stood. The burns that climbed up the left side of your body from your kneecap to your jaw felt white hot, but you grit your teeth against the urge to pass out and took a shaky step forward. Again, the shadows pouring out of Aleksander moved to allow your passage. A distant part of you idly wondered what the rest of the camp could see, if anything, of the spectacle unfolding around you.
Your feet almost slipped out from under you in the damp grass. Your reflexes dulled by exhaustion and pain, you lost your balance and pitched forward. You struck out with your arms to brace your fall, twisting your face away from the direction of impact. There was a moment of free fall before you felt strong arms catching you, artfully avoiding your burns.
Aleksander lifted you easily off your feet in a sweeping motion. You didn’t open your eyes until you felt your back settle against the cot. When you did, a familiar face hovered over you. All trace of his shadows gone, all you saw now was a man. A leader, a saint maybe, a King certainly: but a man still, exhausted and confused.
Before he had a chance to speak, you pressed a finger to his lips. Your head was spinning with pain, but you forced yourself to stay present.
“I’m not afraid of you, Aleks,” you insisted. You held his gaze defiantly, challenging him to argue with you. For once in his stubborn life, he held his tongue and let you finish. “I don’t resent you for who you are. I don’t fight because you command me as my general, or even because you ask me as my lover. I fight beside you because I love you, and I believe in what we’re doing.”
For all his wisdom, you knew that there were parts of your heart that Aleksander would never understand. You’d accepted as much a long time ago. But you’d be damned if you let him rip himself apart over it.
He swallowed thickly, as if trying to take in what you’d told him.
“I don’t… understand. How you can feel that way. About… someone like me. Someone who is what I am. There’s… sometimes-most of the time- it doesn’t seem like there’s enough left of me to love.” You let him finish, his words coming out chopped and halting. It seemed to take almost as much out of him as his powers did, and the sincerity with which he spoke made you smile gently. When he was finished, you reached up and cupped his cheek, your thumb carefully tracing the ragged volcra scar that bisected his cheek.
“Aleks. Just because all the others never showed you love doesn’t mean no one ever will.”
You watched as his memory clicked into place, recognizing the very words he’d said to you the night he’d finally gotten you to tell him about the others. The men before him. The ones who’d tried and failed to love you, and the ones who’d only wanted to hurt you. Those had been the words he’d said, and the reason you’d fallen in love with him. You hadn’t realized how long you’d been waiting to give those words back to him.
He marveled at you for a moment as if seeing you for the first time before he spoke. “I wasn’t talking about any others,” he said quietly.
You shook your head, smiling. “Of course you were,” you answered. “The other lives, the other versions of yourself. That’s all you talk about because it’s all you know. You’ve lived with yourself for so long you’ve forgotten that there’s any way to feel about yourself but hatred.”
You let your hand drop, a sudden wave of exhaustion crashing over you. He noticed, catching your hand halfway down and guiding it to the top of your sheets.
“Dorogoy,” he started, hesitating a moment on the pet name he’d given you. “Where have you been all my lives?”
You beamed at him, finally hearing a break in the tension of his voice. He smiled back - not a broad smile, but enough to touch his eyes.
“Right here, Aleks,” you replied as you let your eyes drift closed for sleep.
You didn’t let yourself fully succumb to rest until you felt his warmth lay down next to you, his arms ever so carefully snaking around your torso. He tucked you closer to him, and you buried your head in his neck, breathing in the scent and the feel of him. You felt yourself slide off into sleep just as he started singing you an old Ravkan lullaby…

All they wanted to do was stay inside and cuddle up with you today, but of course fury got in the way of their plans.
They had gotten called in for a mission in new York around 6 in the morning while you were still asleep, they were told they had to be on the quinjet by 10.
At least that gave them time to prepare some things for you.
They had made you meals for throughout the day and had made you a bottle so all you would have to do was put it in the microwave, then they set up the emergency cameras they had for occasions like this.
They set up one in the living room, one in the dining room, one in the kitchen and the others in your bedroom and theirs.
All that was left to do now was wake you and explain the situation.
Making their way into your room natasha quietly went to over to you chest of draws and pulled some clothes out for you, after laying them out on your armchair.
Leaning down bedside you the two of them placed a kiss to each of your cheeks "little one, time to wake up" wanda cooed softly into your ear while natasha stroked your hair.
Taking in a deep breath and stretching your body you softly whined into the side of your soft pillow "Mama, mommy" you whined feeling their presence beside you.
"Good morning angelochek" Natasha said kissing the tip of your nose "why are you waking me up early mommy?" Taking a deep breath natasha looked to wanda for confirmation before speaking.
"Well sweetheart, mama and I got a call this morning, from fury."
You knew where this was going.
Letting out a whine and clinging to each of their arms you let out a small sob "please don't go please please" you cried curling into a ball. "Oh printsessa, shh it's okay it's okay baby" wanda cooed cradling your head to her chest. "Were sorry sweetheart" Natasha said picking you up and laying you across her arms.
"But we have to save some lovely people and as soon as we're done we can have a film night and if you want we can make something yummy to eat, does that sound good" she said bouncing you slightly.
She knew you couldn't say no to baking.
"Okay" you mumbled into her shoulder nuzzling into her "aww thank you for being so understanding dorogoy" said gently taking you out of nats arms and giving you a kiss.
"Alright I'll get you dressed while mommy gets you some breakfast, how does that sound kotenok?"

After a few hours of cuddling and kisses it was time for nat and wanda to board the quinjet.
"Now sweetheart do you remember everything we told you?" Nat asked gently "yep, don't leave, don't touch sharp things, don't let anyone in and if anything happens text mama, mommy or uncle tony" you mumbled into your jumper. "That's right my love, alright time to go" wanda said soothingly kissing your forehead.
The two of them gave you a cuddle and whispered their goodbyes "we love you baby, we'll be back before you know it okay" "okay, I love you too" you croaked out your lip trembling slightly.
"Oh malysh there's no need to be sad" wanda cooed stroking your hand slightly while nat turned on the television selecting the children's channel. "I know" you whimpered cuddling into her neck "bye bye mommy, bye bye mama" you said gently resting your head back down on the sofa "goodbye darling, we'll be back soon" Nat said holding back tears as she opened the door.
As soon as the two of them boarded the quinjet they pulled up the surveillance camera app and began to monitor you.
───── ⋆⋅◇⋅⋆ ─────
Opening the fridge you pulled out the container and put it in the microwave, while you were waiting for the timer to go off you saw the new camera that had been placed on the bench.
You started to feel bad that your caregivers would have to look at a blank screen, you couldn't just leave them with an empty screen.
Making your way to the living room you picked out a selection of soft toys out of the basket. Going back to the kitchen you placed a blue dinosaur in front of the camera then made your way around the house looking for the rest.
In the living room you had placed a grey kitten, the dining room a green bug, your bedroom a dusty pink elephant and a Kangaroo with a leather jacket in their bedroom.
Feeling proud you took out the container from the microwave and made your way towards your caregivers bedroom wanting to feel closer to them.
───── ⋆⋅◇⋅⋆ ─────
The mission had gone well and everything had gone to plan it turns out they only needed half of the manpower that they had, something that nat and wanda pointed out to fury in annoyance.
The two of them had just boarded back onto the quinjet tossing their weapons to the side they sat down on the steel benches.
"Natasha" wanda said worriedly showing her phone screen to natasha, she had pulled up the security cameras and each one of them showed a pitch black screen. "Oh god, maybe try reopening it" she said scrambling to grab her phone and call you "no, it's still not showing up" wanda panicked madly pressing the screen. "Voicemail" Nat said quietly getting up from her seat "tony how fast can this thing go?" She said calmly concealing her anxiousness.
"This is as fast as I can make it use you want me to burn the things down" he replied smartly "what's wrong" steve questioned looking up from his book "Y/N's not picking up and the cameras are all black" wanda said biting her nail and pacing "right well, okay it's probably because of the signal up here" steve reasoned calmly placing his hand on nats shoulder "Yeah, yeah your probably right, just stark please get this thing back asap"
"Yes mum" he replied sarcastically.
───── ⋆⋅◇⋅⋆ ─────
Crashing through the apartment door natasha and wanda began frantically looking for you.
"Y/N? where are you" Nat said checking your playroom, not there, the kitchen, not there, bathroom, not there, behind the curtains not th-
"Natasha" wanda spoke gently leaning against the doorframe and smiling, you were there. Coming beside her nat saw you curled up in a large grey blanket, an empty container beside you and a children's television show on in the background.
"Oh thank god" Nat sighed running towards the bed and scooping you up making wanda chuckle and walk towards the two of you.
"Mommy! Mama!" You squealed one of your arms around the back of natashas neck and the other clinging onto wanda’s arm. "Oh kotenok you scared us, so much" Nat chuckled kissing the side of your face repeatedly "why mommy?" You questioned looking at her with concern.
"We couldn't see you on the camera's printsessa I'll be sending a very strong worded email to that company later" she whispered taking you out of nats arms and stroking some hair out of your eyes.
A few seconds later the two of you heard nat let out a gasp mixed with a laugh "Sweetheart what's this" she said picking up the clothed kangaroo toy "it's Josh mommy! I thought you and mama would be bored looking at me and the other rooms so I gave you some of my friends for company!" You said happily playing with wanda’s hair.
So that's what happened
"Oh printsessa, we put those cameras there so we could see you so we knew you were safe" wanda explained gently "I'm sorry mama I'm sorry mommy!" You cried reaching out for nats hand.
"Oh malysh, it's okay it's okay honey we're not mad are we wands" "No of course not, it's a good thing that you know now" she said placing you down on the ground to stand.
"How about we go and clean up you toys and then we'll get you a bottle? How does that sound angelochek?" Nat smiled gently taking your hand "okay mommy!" You giggled following her out the door.

A thank you for saving me
Tumblr media
Summary:  Yelena and Kate found you on a mission to free a Widow still under Red Room Control. You soon find yourself in a relationship with the archer and Black Widow but Thanksgiving spent at the Barton's farm makes you worried that your not enough for them. Laura is there to help.
Word Count: 3.6k
Warnings: Past abuse, torture, mention of Natasha’s death, Reader was with HYDRA, fluff
The outside world was confusing. It was loud. It was exhausting. But you were grateful to be alive. Yelena and Kate found you in a warehouse in Germany while they were trying to free a Widow. You were tied in a chair; bleeding, bruised, and your arm broken. Well, that was what they told you. You didn’t have memories of how you got there but you woke up in their safehouse. After you healed, you helped them save the Widow that they were after. Once the Widow was saved, Kate invited you to their shared apartment in New York City. That was 9 months ago. For the first time in your life, you had a safe place to live because of that your mind and body began to heal. You remembered that your parents gave you to a man that you met a park. They were after you because of your ability to manipulate sand particles. You were forced to work for the organization. It was hard trying to put all of that behind you but Yelena and Kate were very helpful.
*
You were laying on the couch mindlessly watching the snowfall as you ran your hand through Fanny’s fur. Lucky was laying at your feet. You were the first one awake in the apartment. Truth be told, you awoke from a nightmare and couldn’t go back to sleep. You heard boards creaking as the other residents in the apartment awake. It was Yelena. She was lighter on her feet than Kate. Fanny didn’t stir when Yelena walked into the living room. “Good morning, dorogy.” You gave her a tired smile. “Another nightmare.” She said, sitting down next to you. You nodded. “Why didn’t you wake us up?” The Russian asked. You shrugged looking back out the window.
“Didn’t want to bother you.” Your voice was rough from disuse. Yelena took your free hand in yours.
“We are here for you.” You nodded. “Do you want to help with breakfast?” She asked. You nodded again. Yelena kissed the back of your hand. You blushed as she stood up and walked into the kitchen. When you first met the archer and the Black Widow you knew right away that they were dating. You didn’t know a lot but picking up clues and body language was part of your training with HYDRA. The relationship between you, the Black Widow, and the archer was new, about 4 months. It was another thing you had to get used to. Fanny whined as you got off the couch and joined the blonde in the kitchen. She handed you a bowl to mix. Pancakes were a go to breakfast food in this apartment.
“When are we leaving for Iowa?” You asked, mixing the batter. For Thanksgiving, the Bartons invited Yelena and Kate to their home. The invite extended to you, which you were a little nervous about.
“We are leaving at 5.” You nodded, passing the bowl to Yelena.
“Are you sure you're okay with going?” She asked. “We can have Thanksgiving here.” You shook your head.
“No, it’s fine. I’ll be okay.” You didn’t want to change your girlfriend’s plan because you were a little anxious to go somewhere new and meet new people. You heard Kate walk around and downstairs. The dogs immediately ran over to her to say good morning. She gave them equal amounts of attention before making her way to the kitchen.
“Good morning,” she said, kissing you and Yelena on the cheek. She turned on the coffee pot. Coffee wasn’t for you but both of your girlfriends loved it. Once the coffee was on, she came back and wrapped her arms around your waist, resting her head on your shoulder. “How did you sleep?” She asked. You knew you couldn’t lie because Yelena knew the truth. The Black Widow turned her back to use the stovetop. You sighed, enjoying the feeling of her arms around you.
“I had a nightmare,” you mumbled. “I’m sorry I didn’t wake you up.” You felt her shake your head against you.
“You’re okay. I’m proud of you for even telling us.” You smiled, even though she couldn’t see it.
“Breakfast is ready.” Yelena said. “Break it up you two.” Kate let go of you and you turned around to see the archer roll her eyes. “Can you grab the syrup, solntse (sun)?” Yelena asked. You nodded, opening the fridge and grabbed the syrup. You joined your girlfriends at the table as they told you about Barton’s Farm. You were excited but your nerves were all over the place.
*
You determined that Thanksgiving was the strangest holiday, all in the name of some guy that killed and conquered a bunch of people. According to Lila, it was more about family than the history behind it. The Bartons were nice and welcomed you into the family without hesitation. Nathaniel was fascinated with your ability and wouldn’t leave your side. Once food was eaten, you helped Laura with the dishes. You joined the rest in the living room. Kate and Yelena were on the couch and sat on the floor in front of them. Right away Nat sat on your lap. “Squirt, leave the poor girl alone.” Clint said to his youngest.
“I don’t mind.” You smiled, taking off the necklace you had. It was a gift but you weren’t sure who gave it to you. He held out his hand and you dumped the sand in his palm. “What do you want?” You asked.
“A star,” Lila said before her brother could answer. You nodded, waving your hand over the sand. The particles began to move and you carefully crafted the sand into a star. Once it was solid, you flew the star around the living room and around Lila. You brought the sand back to his hand. The next hour was filled with requests and you were happy to fulfill them because for once your powers were used to make people laugh instead of hurting them.
*
A nightmare woke you up. You quietly got out of the bed but you heard Kate wake up. “Where are you going?” She asked, her voice low from sleep.
“Just the bathroom,” you whispered, pushing some hair behind her ear. “Go back to sleep.” She nodded, closing her eyes. It wasn’t a total lie. You went to the bathroom first to splash cold water on your face. You wanted to go back to bed and curl up against your girlfriends. But you knew you’d slip back into another nightmare and you didn’t have the energy for that. Plus the room felt too small. On quiet feet, you walked down the stairs and into the living room. You walked over to the boxes that Laura had Clint bring down. Laura wanted to decorate for Christmas. Christmas, another holiday you didn’t understand.
You opened the top box and found old Christmas pictures. It was dated last year, the year Yelena and Kate met. The archer and Black Widow told you their story. You flipped through a few of the photos, most only having the small Barton Family. Until you came across a patch with a new addition. Someone you only met through stories. Natasha. You smiled as you looked through the photos. They all seemed happy.
“I wondered when you’d be up.” The sudden voice caused you to drop the photos and turn around with a quiet yelp. The mother of 3 was standing there with a smile. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. Do you want some tea?” She asked, walking to the kitchen. It took a minute for your brain to register her sudden appearance but you followed her into the kitchen.
“How did you know I was going to be up?” You asked, sitting down. She placed two cups on the kitchen island while the water boiled.
“You aren’t the first person to be plagued by their past to be brought into this home.” She put tea bags into the mugs. “And something tells me you won’t be the last.” You smiled
“Your family does seem to attract strays.” She playfully rolled her eyes.
“Don’t remind me.” She poured the boiling water over the tea bags and set out sugar and honey. “So a nightmare.” She guessed. You nodded, mixing in some honey in your tea. “Do you want to talk about it?” Did you? Kate and Yelena always asked you about them.
“I don’t know how.” You whispered. You stared into the tea. “Kate and Yelena want me to talk about it and I try but this is all new to me.”
“What is?” She questioned. You were quiet for a moment. Most of the times you don't remember the nightmares that plagued you at night, only the feeling.
“A family.” you said. “People that care about me.” You sighed, shaking your head. “Sometimes I think I don’t deserve them. They’ve done so much for me and I feel like I’ve done nothing for them.” They saved you. They gave you a home in the city. They showed you everything you missed.
“Have you ever thought they don’t want anything from you?” Laura asked softly. “They just want you and that’s enough for them.”
“What if that won’t be enough one day?” You voiced your fears. “What if one day they really see what I am?” You shook your head. “Then I’ll have nothing all over again. I want to do something for them.”
“And what are you?” You didn’t answer. You were a lot of things. A killer. A monster. Hell your own parents gave you away because they didn’t want you anymore. Laura sighed. “If you want to do something for them, maybe I can help you plan a Christmas outing.” You perked up at them.
“Yes, please.”
“Alright, here’s the plan…”
*
Phase 1: Decorations and Christmas Tree
Laura said the first part of the plan needed to be timed carefully. It had to happen before December 3rd because of Natasha’s birthday. So you decided on the 1st, the day after you got back from the Barton’s. You woke up early, made a fresh pot of coffee, and began getting the Christmas decorations they’ve collected. You didn’t trust yourself in the kitchen so you figured you could go out for breakfast, something you’ve never done. You went back upstairs to your shared bedroom. Yelena woke up from the door opening. You gave her a smile and slipped back into bed behind her. “You are in a good mood.” She mumbled. You buried your face in her neck.
“I thought we could go out and get breakfast then maybe pick out a Christmas tree and decorate the apartment before Kate leaves.” The archer was assigned a mission while you were in Iowa, leaving tomorrow. Yelena rolled over on her back to look up at you.
“That sounds wonderful, solntse.” She paused. “That’s a lot of social interaction, are you going to be okay?” You really hated how caring they were.
“I’m the one who suggested it. I’ll be fine. Now,” you kissed her cheek. “Go get ready. I made coffee.” Yelena smiled and got out of bed. You turned your attention to the archer. You cuddled up against her back. “Katie, wake up.” She groaned, burrowing her head deeper into the pillow. “Come on, we got a Christmas filled day.” She opened her eyes at the mention of Christmas.
“Christmas.” You rolled your eyes.
“Yes Christmas but you have to get up.” She groaned.
“Fine since a pretty girl is telling me to get out of bed.” You blushed, slapping her on her chest.
“You are such a dork.”
*
Kate decided on bagels for breakfast. It was quick and easy so you could make it your next destination, a Christmas tree farm. Yelena held your hand as you walked through the pine trees. Kate led the way since she was the only one that had any real experience of picking a tree. “Why are you doing this?” The Black Widow asked. You looked at her.
“I’m not doing anything.” You said. It was mostly Kate that planned your outings. “I just wanted to have a fun day with you guys.” Before Yelena could say anything, Kate called out, “Hey guys, what about this one?” You dragged Yelena to where Kate was.
“Good pick malen'kiy yastreb (little hawk).” Yelena said, kissing Kate on the side of the head. The archer looked at you.
“It’s perfect.”
*
You and Yelena were in charge of getting the tree into the apartment while Kate ran to the store for a surprise. You set up the tree and Yelena started the batter for sugar cookies. “What do you think Kate is getting at the store?” You asked as you pet Lucky. Yelena sighed.
“You never know with her.” You laughed and went into the kitchen. You helped cut the dough into shapes and put the cookies into the oven when the door opened. Kate was wearing a Santa hat and carrying shopping bags in her arms. You went to help her as the dogs ran to greet her.
“What did you get?” You asked. She snatched the bags out of your hands.
“It’s a surprise.” Her surprise was plaid matching PJ sets for you, Yelena, her, and the dogs. Once everyone was dressed, the tree and apartment was decorated and the cookies were made. Kate even bought you a stocking while at the store. Everything was done and you were exhausted. Home Alone 2 was on the TV as you laid on the couch, your head rested in Yelena’s lap. Her fingers running through your hair lured you to sleep.
“Today was good,” Kate said.
“Yeah,” Yelena whispered, looking down at you. “It was.”
*
Phase 2: Dealing with Grief
Dec 3rd, 2026
You were home alone with the dogs all day. Kate was on a mission and Yelena was well you weren’t sure where she was. She left early in the morning and turned off her phone. You worked on their Christmas gifts, played with the dogs, finished a few books that you started but still your mind was on the Black Widow. You even called Laura and she talked you off the edge. It was 10:30 when the apartment door opened and the Black Widow walked in. Fanny was the first to greet her. You stood up from the couch watching as Yelena petted the American Akita. She closed the door. “I was worried about you.” You finally said. She took off her winter jacket and hung it up.
“I can take care of myself.” She said, walking into the kitchen. She opened the fridge, pulled out a bottle of vodka, and began to drink straight from it. Patient. It was the advice Laura gave you when dealing with an emotional Black Widow.
“I know you can,” you said. “You're the strongest person I know.” She stopped at your words for a second but she continued to drink. “But you don’t have to be strong alone. I’m here.” The Russian stared at you as you walked over to her.
“I’m fine.” She said.
“The drinking straight from the bottle says otherwise.” You said, putting your hand on top of hers. “You have been there for me every step of the way; the good, the bad, the ugly.” Her bottom lip started to quiver. “Let me be there for you.” She didn’t say anything. “Please.”
“I miss her so much.” You nodded as her green eyes started to fill with tears.
“I know you do.” You said, pulling her into a hug. She cried against your shirt. You brought her down to the kitchen floor and rested your back on the counter. You held your girlfriend as she cried and cried. Soon her breathing evened out and you looked down to see her eyes closed, her fist gripping onto your shirt. You smiled and let her sleep.
*
Phase 3: Ice Skating and Christmas lights
“On a scale of 1 to 10, how busy will Bryant Park be?” You asked, looking up from the book you were reading.
“About 25.” Kate said. She was finishing a mission report for Sam. You thought about it. Your choices were Central Park or Bryant Park. You’ve been to Central Park already and you wanted to see the Christmas village set up in Bryant. But you did not want to deal with crowds. You sighed.
“Do you guys want to go?” You asked. Yelena stopped working on her Widow Bites.
“What?” She questioned. You put your bookmark in the spine and stood up, stretching your back.
“Yeah, let’s go!” You said. “Apparently, it’s the place to be in New York City for Christmas.” Kate closed her laptop.
“Are you sure you want to go?” You weren’t but you nodded.
“Yup!” You smiled, popping the ‘p’. “Let’s go.” You missed the way Yelena and Kate looked at each other as you ran upstairs to change.
*
It was busy. Maybe not a level 25 but a 16. You held on tight to Kate as you voiced your want to go ice skating. The weather was a little overcast so the ice wasn’t as busy. “Have you ever gone ice skating?” Kate asked as you sat on a bench to put on your skates. You nodded.
“Once for a HYDRA assignment.” You said. “I went on a date with a scientist they were interested in.” Yelena put a confronting hand on your shoulder. “They had me kill him after the 3rd date.” You rarely opened up about your missions with HYDRA.
“We’ll make better memories today.” And you did. You spent hours on the ice and at the park. You drank your weight in hot chocolate and eat just as many sweets. After you were done, you walked the streets of New York to look at the Christmas lights. You were buzzing with sugar running through your veins. But you were happy.
*
Christmas Eve
Yelena knew something was off with you. She was happy that you were leaving your comfort zone of the apartment but she was hoping it was for the right reasons. The plan was to spend Christmas in the city this year. The Barton's and Alexei and Melina were visiting. But tonight it was a quiet night. You were upstairs getting dressed while Yelena and Kate were putting the final touches on dinner. “Should we say something?” Kate asked. The Russian sighed.
“I think we need to.” Kate nodded. “I’ll take the lead.”
“Probably for the best.” The archer admitted. Yelena smiled as you walked into the kitchen. You were wearing a red dress with black leggings. “Whoa.” Kate mumbled.
“You look beautiful, solntse.” You blushed.
“Thank you.” You helped set the table. Dinner was amazing and desert was a simple cheesecake. After everything was cleaned up, presents were passed around. Christmas Day was going to be busy. You got Yelena a new vest and knife with the Russian words yubov', zdorov'ye, and schast'ye which translated to love, health, and happiness. For Kate, you got her a necklace with a bow and new arrow heads. They got you new books to add to your collection, two new sweatshirts because you were always stealing theirs, and a new locket to hold the sand.
“Solntse,” Yelena said, once you returned from changing out of the dress into one of the new sweatshirts. “Is there something you want to talk to us about?” The sudden question made you freeze.
“Yeah because you were different this month, not a bad different.” Kate added quickly. The Black Widow glared at the archer.
“We just want to make sure your okay.” Yelena clarified. She watched you play with the string. Finally, you sighed.
“It was hard.” You admitted. “But I did it all for you two.”
“Why?” Kate questioned. “We would have been happy just sitting in the apartment.” You throw your arms to the side.
“Exactly for that reason,” you said. “Sometimes I don’t think I deserve you guys.” You sat down on the couch with a huff. Yelena and Kate walked over to you, hoping you would continue on your own. “You guys literally saved my life and I look at everything you’ve done for me and I compare it to what I do for you; it doesn’t add up.”
“You don’t have to do anything for us.” Yelena said.
“You just being here and healing is enough.” You frowned.
“What if I when one day that’s not enough and I lose you?” Your voice cracked at your confession. “I can’t lose you. I-” you paused, letting out a shaky breath. “I love you both too much to let you go.” It was the first time you said those 3 words.
“We aren’t going anywhere, okay?” Kate said, grabbing your hand and Yelena’s. Yelena took yours to complete the ring. “It’s us three against the world.” You finally smiled.
“You are a light, solntse. It’s why I call you sun. Never doubt that for a second.” Yelena said, squeezing your hand. “And I love you too.”
“I love you.” Kate said, bring you into a hug. You ended up falling backwards onto the couch, laying mostly on Kate. But the archer didn’t seem to mind. “You are stuck with us. I sincerely apologize.” You laughed, hiding your face in her neck.
“Merry Christmas.” Yelena said.
“Merry Christmas.” You smiled. You remembered what Laura said to you after you planned all of this, ‘All of your life you’ve experienced pain and everything given to you had a double meaning. But Kate and Yelena love you. And that love has no double meaning. That love is special and you should cherish it forever.’

Strade d'Europa

Somebody to You by the Banners

Final Part of The Adventure of Y/n Barton and Yelena Belova
Summary: After a month of being apart, you and Yelena finally talk. Will this talk bring you back together or further part?
Warning: jealousy, fluff, Yelena experiences gay panic,
Word count: 3.8k
“Alright,” You whispered. “Let’s talk.” Yelena prided herself to be someone that didn’t get nervous. She looked death in the face and beat it. She had her life altered by a man who saw himself as God and she walked away from him alive. She grieved the death of her sister and rejoiced when she came back. But staring into your eyes under the low light of the alley with snowflakes slowly falling down, Yelena was nervous.
Beautiful, Yelena thought. You giggled. Wait, did she say that out loud? Yelena’s eyes widened. “Well I appreciate the compliment but I don't think that we are here to talk about my appearance.” She felt her cheeks heat up. You laughed, throwing your head back and it was the best sound Yelena’s heard.
“I’m mad at you.” Yelena pouted, with no real malice. It was easy to go back into this joking banter with you. Once your laughter died down, you looked back at Yelena with a smile.
“That’s a shame,” You said. “Because I don’t hate you.” Such a simple statement but it casted away any doubt and fear Yelena was having. “Do you want to try this whole talking thing again?” Yelena had lost the ability to speak. You were so close to her. The cold winter air didn’t bother her because your abnormal high body temperature kept her warm. She nodded. “Alright,” You said. “Let’s talk.” You repeated. Talk. There was so much Yelena wanted to say. She’s been practicing for a week - everything she needed to apologize for. But standing so close to you, the only thought in her mind was how much she wanted to kiss you.
“Yelena,” You said. “It’s just us. Do you want me to go first?” Yelena shook her head. “Okay, just tell me what’s going on in your head.” She was brought back to that night. ‘I want to know what’s going on in your head.’ That is what you said to her.
“I uh I-shit.” You smiled. Gods, she really wanted to kiss you. “I’m thinking about how much I want to kiss you.” Your eyes got wide. “But before that happens, if you let me.” She added quickly. “I need to apologize.” Yelena let out a shaky breath. “I am so sorry. I am so fucking sorry how I ended things. I’m sorry I knew something was wrong and I didn’t say anything.” She was word vomiting so she stopped and tried to clear her throat, it was very dry. “You are right, you aren’t me.” She watched the realization wash over your face. “And I don’t want you to be me. I want you to be you because you are light, happiness, and love.” Her throat began to burn as she kept her tears at bay. “It was wrong for me to tell you to move on. I’m sorry.”
*
You knew you were crying - smiling but crying as Yelena spoke. As she said her piece weight lifted off your shoulders. “I’m sorry too. It wasn’t just on you that our relationship erupted into flames like it did. I should have talked to you. When you were going to find help, that man said some stuff to me.” Yelena frowned, taking your other hand.
“What did he say to you?” She asked. You didn’t answer right away, looking down at your connected hands.
“He told me that I was the reason we were caught. That I made you weak. He also said that my own father didn’t want me. He asked when you were going to leave me because I’m nothing.”
“Oh dorogy,” She dropped your hands and cradled your face with her hands, whipping away your tears. “That monster was wrong. You are not my weakness but my strength. You mean everything to me. Do you understand?” You nodded. “I don’t wanna die or fade away. I don’t wanna dive and disappear without a trace. I just wanna be someone.” You chuckled.
“Well, doesn’t everyone?” You asked.
“I wanna be somebody to someone. I never had nobody and no road home.” She confessed. It broke your heart Yelena believed she had nobody in her corner, that nobody cared about her. You understood though. You covered her hands with yours.
“Yelena, kiss me.” It took a minute for your request to register for the woman in front of you.
“Are you sure?” She asked. “I know I said I want to, but if you aren’t ready then I’ll wait.” You rolled your eyes but your heart fluttered at how caring she was. You moved your hands behind her neck and pulled her close. Your lips weren’t touching yet. She moved her hands to your waist, tentatively. But when you didn’t show any signs of discomfort - her hold on your waist tightened.
“I’ve missed you so much, solnishko.” You said, against her lips. The dam broke that you knew the Russian was trying to hold together as tears ran down her face.
“I’ve missed you too.” It was all she needed to connect her lips with yours. It was a feeling you missed so much - being able to be this close with Yelena. She ended the kiss with a smile on her face.
“We need to talk more about us.” You said. “But tonight can we just be together?” She nodded, kissing your forehead, letting her lips linger on your skin.
“No place I’d rather be.” You reentered the Avenger Tower with Yelena’s hand in yours. You caught Kate’s eyes and she gave you a big smile and a thumbs up. “Dork.” You heard Yelena mumble and although she wasn’t wrong, you hit her on the shoulder.
“Be nice.” You stopped walking when you got closer to the table. “Are you hungry?” You asked. The SHIELD agent was gone, thankfully. But you wanted to spend more time with Yelena before the hoard of questions. The Russian picked up on your hesitation.
“I haven’t eaten all day.” Yelena confessed. You gave her a look that caused Yelena to cringe. “I was an anxious mess from the idea of seeing you.” Well that’s adorable. You gave her a quick kiss on the check and led her to the buffet. There was a line but you didn’t care. “So,” Yelena said, after a pass of silence. “How have you been?” She asked, handing you a plate.
“I’ve been okay,” You answered, piling food on your plate. You didn’t realize how hungry you were either. “I think being home helped a lot. Especially since I missed so much of my siblings growing up because I hated being home.” Yelena nodded, grabbing a spoonful of mac and cheese. You laughed silently, shaking your head. “How about you? How have you been?” Yelena tensed up and you feared you overstepped.
“I’m going to therapy.” You almost dropped your food in shock. “Close your mouth or you’ll eat a fly.”
“Sorry.” You were stunned to say the least. “That’s great. I’m proud of you.” Yelena shrugged, adding hot sauce to her food.
“I should have gone when we got back.” She said, “Sam helped me find one and I start in the new year.” You were proud of her. It took a lot of strength to admit you needed help. “I want to be better for you so this will work.” You nodded.
“Go for yourself too.” You said. “Don’t do it for others.”
“I am. I promise I am.” Instead of walking back to the table, Yelena grabbed your free hand and led you to the bar. You sat down at empty seats and ordered drinks. “Can I ask you something?” You nodded, a mouth full of food. “Who was the girl sitting next to you?” You took a sip of your drink. You wondered when she was going to bring her up, noticing the hint of jealousy in her voice.
“A SHIELD agent, to be honest I don’t remember her name.” That made Yelena smile. “She came up to me and just started talking and touching me.” Anger flashed in the Russian’s eyes. You grabbed her free hand. “It’s fine. Apparently what happened to us in Russia is the talk of the town with the new agents.” Yelena squeezed your hand. “I’m okay, Lena. I promise.” Yelena nodded, kissing the back of your hand. You ate your food in silence, enjoying the way Yelena held your hand and her thumb moved back and forth. The bartender refilled your glasses and collected the empty plates.
“Ready to go back?” Yelena asked. You sighed, nodding. You couldn’t hide forever. You stood up and walked back to the table. Kate was sitting over there now talking with your father. You sat back down in your seat and Yelena sat in the now empty one. No one batted an eye or made a comment but you did see your dad smile and wink at you. You noticed Yelena visibly relaxed next to you when your mom began to speak with her. You smiled, feeling happier and freer than ever. This was your family.
*
Yelena didn’t know how to describe this feeling in her chest. Her hand never left yours as you both carried on your own conversations. Your voice, laughter, and smile made Yelena feel as if she was floating. She was worried that your parents were going to say something and they did in their own way. Clint gave her a look that spoke loud and clear - don’t hurt her again. Yelena nodded. Laura asked how she was doing and how working as an Avenger was treating her. It felt nice to be surrounded by everyone again. “Excuse me everyone,” Sam said, standing up and straightening his tie. “Duty calls.” Bucky rolled his eyes.
“You are giving a speech not saving someone from a burning building.” Bucky said. Sam gasped in mock offense, clutching his chest.
“You wound me good sir.” Sam joked, the table laughed at their interaction as Bucky slapped his boyfriend playfully.
“Better you than me.” Steve mumbled, the comment didn’t go on deaf ears.
“Not missing the spotlight, Rogers?” Clint asked, grasping his hand on the super soldier’s shoulder. Steve shook his head.
“Getting too old for it.” Natasha’s laugh was the loudest at the table.
“See a fossil. We should pack you up and send you to the Smithsonian.” Yelena shook her head as Steve’s cheeks turned pink.
“You know what Romanoff -” Steve’s threat was cut off by a microphone turning on as the billionaire took the stage. Sam gave the table a salute and ran off, quickly moving to the stairs of the stage.
“Hello everyone,” Tony’s voice boomed through the lobby. “I do hope you are enjoying yourself. As the man who signs the cheek after this I have to make sure my money was well spent.” The billionaire’s joke got a few laughs.
“Please,” Natasha said, rolling her eyes. “You’d throw a party every day till the new year without hearing our opinion.” Yelena chuckled, shaking her head. It was nice seeing this side of her sister, openly joking around with her friends. It was another piece of evidence that they were free. Tony shook his head.
“She’s not wrong. But,” he clapped his hands together. “I am not one for speeches. I’ll leave it to that guy.” He pointed to Sam, who waved. “I do want to say how thankful I am for all of us to be able to be together again. When the holidays came around in 2018, I didn’t think we’d get a chance to celebrate together again.” A heavy silence filled the lobby and you gave Yelena’s hand a tight squeeze, leaning into her. She wrapped her arms arounds you. “We’ve been through a lot together and I wouldn’t want to go through with anyone else. So before I get more emotional please help me welcome to the stage Sam Wilson.” Everyone clapped as Captain America walked up the stage and gave a quick hug to Tony.
“I’ll keep this short because I know the night is still young and we are here to celebrate with one another and get drunk, not listen to me talk.” Yelena felt you chuckle. “I’d first like to thank Tony for signing the check and Pepper who actually planned this party.” Tony flipped Sam off as Pepper smacked him on the chest. “And all of the workers that have to deal with us.” Sam sighed, looking around the room. “When Tony asked if I wanted to speak at the Christmas party, I was hesitant. How was I supposed to write a speech that conveyed the emotions of an entire room? Do I focus on what and who’ve we lost or do I talk about how we are walking towards a better future?” Sam shrugged. “Even as I stand in front of you, I’m still unsure and I think that is okay. I’m unsure what to talk about. I’m unsure what tomorrow is going to bring me. I’m unsure what is waiting for me as soon as I walk off this stage.
“We can’t change the past even though it’s human or God or Guardian nature, even when we now have the ability to go back into time because we don’t know how it will affect the now. Even though a small green stone gives us the ability to see into the future, should we look? I guess what I am trying to get at is, we can only focus and live in the now. We have to treasure the time we have with the people we love and not worry about what’s going to happen a week, a month, a year from now.” He smiled. “And as I look around this room and remember all the good, the bad, and the ugly memories I have with everyone of you; I can’t help but feel grateful to be a part of this beautiful family. Merry Christmas everyone and Happy Holidays.”

After Sam’s speech, you found yourself in the sitting area with the ‘Young Avengers’ as Tony and Sam liked to call them - they were training to take over the Avenger mantle. You and Yelena were sitting together - her legs laid across you and your hand was playing with the rings on her fingers. To be honest, you weren’t listening to the conversation around you. You knew they were playing an intense game of ‘would you rather?’ “So,” Shuri said, stopping the game. “When are you going to join us Y/n?” The question directed at you snapped out of your thoughts.
“I’m sorry?” You questioned. “Like the game - I rather not debate on who I think is better in bed with people I grew up with.” You cringed. Kate and Yelena laughed. Shuri rolled her eyes and smiled. You didn’t like the smile.
“No, I mean the Young Avengers.” Oh. Oh. It wasn’t the first time someone asked if you were going to follow in your father’s footsteps and you knew it wasn’t going to be the last. Yelena sat up, noticing the shift in the conversation.
“You are kind of a badass.” Kamala added.
“And I bet you could give better hero speeches than Peter.” Cassie mumbled, the comment caused Peter to throw a small pillow at her. You smiled with a shrug.
“I don’t think I’ll be joining you guys. Never really thought about being an Avenger.” You chuckled. “Besides I may give my old man a heart attack if I join the team and I can’t risk that.” They laughed and they went back to the game besides Yelena, who kept her eyes on you. You gave her a smile and nodded. It was true. You never wanted to be an Avenger as you’ve seen the pain that comes with the title. From being at the tower when Ultron first attacked, seeing the team beaten and broken after their fight with Maximoff twins, holding it together when you learned your father was kidnapped and controlled by Loki, and the battle with Thanos and his children. But you were special, unique, and had abilities that most people would love to have. Was it selfish of you to not use them to help make the world a better place? You weren’t sure.

Yelena knew Shuri’s question affected you more than you were willing to show to the group. The DJ faded out the current song and an instrumental version of ‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas’ began to play. She watched a few couples move to the dance floor - Clint and Laura, Wanda and Natasha, Tony and Pepper, and even Kate and America. Yelena set her drink on the side table and stood up, holding out her hand. “Dance with me?” You looked at her hand with a smile and took it. Yelena found a more private spot on the dance floor and put her hands on your hips and you put your arms around her neck. “Do you want to talk about what happened back there?” Yelena asked. You sighed, biting the inside of your check.
“Do you think I should be an Avenger?” Yelena was startled by the question. Before she could answer you continued, “I understand why you joined when we first got back, even though it was unhealthy.” You joked. Yelena rolled her eyes. “But it makes sense for me to become one, you know? My parents were both SHIELD agents and my dad was an Avenger. Natasha helped raise me. I mean all of this,” You gestured around the Avenger lobby. “Has been my entire life. Fury has asked me to join the team every time he sees me. Am I wasting -” Yelena connected her lips with yours. You let out a surprise squeak but soon kissed her back. She pulled away. “Did you just kiss me so I’d stop rambling?” You asked.
“Yes.” You laughed, shaking your head.
“Rude.”
“I’m not going to tell you what to do.” Yelena started. “I’ll support you if you decide to join the team or if you don’t.” You nodded. “Join because you want to join, not because that is what others think you should do.” Yelena twirled you in a circle and brought you back in her arms. You giggled. “I don’t need to change the world. I’d make the moon shine just for you. If you feel like the night is falling I want to be the one you're calling.” You played with the baby hairs at the base of her neck, sending a shiver down Yelena’s spine.
“You are someone, somebody to me.” You whispered. “I don’t want to lose you again.”
“You won’t,” Yelena promised. “You won’t. I’m not going anywhere.” Yelena was unsure of the future with her being involved with the Avengers and unknown threats still lurking. Even if the sun started to set and the sky went cold, she could make her way home to you.

Christmas Morning - Plaza Hotel
You woke up to the feeling of fingers running through your hair. You groaned and opened your eyes, blinking away sleep. “Merry Christmas, zolotse.” Yelena said, looking down at you. You looked up at the Russian. Her braid was messy from sleep and her sleep shirt was handing off her shoulder. You missed this, falling asleep with Yelena in your arms.
“Merry Christmas, sweetheart.” You gave her a brief kiss. “I have something to give you.”
“You got me a present?” Yelena questioned.
“Yes and no.” You rolled over and opened the drawer of the nightstand, pulling out a white envelope. You sat up before handing it to her. She took the envelope with shaky hands. Steadying herself, she opened it and pulled out a key.
“Is this?” She asked. You nodded.
“The apartment is still in my name,” You sighed. “I’m not sure what tomorrow is going to bring me and like Sam said, I’m okay with it. But I do know I want you to be there by my side.” Yelena closed her hand around the key. “When I figure it out, do you want to move back in with me?” You asked.
“Yes.” She answered without hesitation. You smiled.
“Cool.” You nodded.
“Cool.” She repeated. You laughed, closing the gap between you two. Before your lips touched, banning on your door caused both of you to jump back.
“You better have clothes on!” Copper said. You groaned, blushing. Yelena chuckled, shaking her head. Gods, you wanted to kill your older brother sometimes. “We do.” You called out to your brother. The door swung open and Nathaniel came running in, jumping onto your bed, and crawled onto your lap.
“Get up! Get up!” He said, grabbing you by the shoulders and shaking you. Yelena and your other siblings laughed at the youngest Barton’s actions. Lila and Cooper joined him on the bed. “Santa came last night! We have presents to open!”
“Alright, alright, I’m going.” You chuckled, pushing him off of you. He landed between you and Yelena with a groan.
“Dad is having a meltdown because we are on a ‘time crunch’.” Litla said, adding the air quotes. You rolled your eyes.
“He needs to learn how to relax.” Yelena said.
“I heard that, Belova.” Your dad yelled. “Now hurry up, breakfast is getting cold.” The mention of food got everyone out of bed. You glanced at Yelena as she attached the key to one of her necklaces and put it on. Your heart fluttered as you followed your siblings to the living room area of the hotel suite. The Christmass tree that was bare the night before had colorful presents around it. You, Yelena, and your parents were running on very little sleep to set everything up. But it was worth it seeing the excitement in your siblings' faces. Nathaniel ran over to the presents and looked over the presents.
“Lena!” He said, pointing. “You have presents too.”
“I have presents.” She said, slowly.
“Eat then presents.” Laura said, with a smile. She handed Yelena a plate of food. “Merry Christmas.” You gave the Russian’s hand a squeeze, noticing she was getting a little overwhelmed.
“Merry Christmas.” She said, finding her voice. Your family sat around the tree. Your dad kept having to stop Nathaniel from opening the presents too early while your mom went over the plan for the day - presents hare, meeting up with Natasha and Wanda, then back to the tower. It was going to be a busy and tiring day but you were grateful for your family.
He was wrong. You were somebody to a lot of people. A daughter. A sister. A friend. A niece. A girlfriend. He didn’t win. He was locked away in a cell while you were free. “What’s got you smiling like that?” Yelena whispered to you. You looked at her.
“Just happy.” She kissed your forehead.
“Me too, zolotse. Me too.”
The End.
_
Just like that the main story of The Adventure of Y/n Barton and Yelena Belova has come to an end! I want to thank everyone who took time out of their day to read this story; which started has a little one shot evolved into a 6 part series!
Now what is next? I do have three drabbles planned for this AU; the talk between Y/n and Clint, how Y/n and Yelena met, and a cute moment where Y/n helps Yelena through a nightmare! However, we learned a lot about this AU with these last two parts so if you want me to go into specifics please let me know! I have some ideas floating around but would love to see what you guys are interested in!
Thank you! Your support means the world to me!
