Here’s a cute little fic to the prompt “I’d kill for a cup of coffee. Literally.”

A little bit of backstory for this: Brant’s abuse resulted in bouts of rage that he specifically triggers on the battlefield to help him both fight and also kill. (In universes with concrete magic in them like the one in this fic, he actually turns into a wolf when he goes berserk.) He’s kind of gotten used to it (killing) compared to Dustin, but it still fucks him up, which Dustin knows.

They’re on a mission in some distant universe, all three hunkered down behind a few burial mounds in the wee hours of the morning. The burial mounds are the only place safe for them at the moment, because the surrounding area is swarming with hostile Nords who are either too superstitious or too smart to go near the burial mounds before the sun has fully risen. Judging by the strange scraping sounds that had been waking them up throughout the middle of the night, Brant likes to think the latter. The only one who got a good night’s rest is unsurprisingly Emilia, who has always been at home among the dead.

There’s flickering flames on the horizon. There’d been scouts throughout the night. Brant had seen them drifting like little fireflies across the landscape in the dark. It seemed they’d managed to pin them down to the graveyard and were now waiting for the sun to rise fully in order to make their move.

Dustin yawns and rises from his spot beside Emilia, brushing dirt and little bits of grass out of his curly hair. His helmet is lying beside his legs, but he doesn’t make a move to reach for it. Instead he turns and stares at Brant beside him.

“Wow. You’re usually not up early,” he says, in awe.

“I woke up around an hour ago and couldn’t get to sleep. This place gives me the creeps. Too many dead bodies under the ground.” He gives Dustin a pointed look. “After that mission where they were rising from the dead, I am not pleased with being around them. Especially in a universe where concrete magic exists.”

In response, Dustin just snorts and gives a stifled smile, pointing at his face. “You look like a mess.”

“Yeah, well... I’d kill for a cup of coffee right now.” Brant turns to scan the horizon again. Four more flames have appeared. His voice lowers. “Literally.”

Dustin follows his line of sight and then finally reaches out to put his helmet on. He’s always been an optimist, though, because instead of getting serious, he snorts again. “Really? So if a genie appeared out of nowhere and said you have to kill these guys and I’ll give you some coffee and donuts--”

Brant bursts out laughing. “We’re going to kill them anyway! The coffee and donuts are just a perk, you nerd!”

“I don’t know. Maybe they’ll see Emilia and run away.”

Brant throws his thumb over his shoulder, thumb lined up with the flames behind him. “They’ve got fire. We’re gonna have to do this without her this time. No way we’re getting out of it.”

Now Dustin gets serious. “Well, damn.”

“I know you hate killing, but I need you to bring your A-game today.”

Dustin sighs and crawls over to him, pulling his legs out from under Emilia’s arms and sits beside him. He curls beside him and leans in, putting his head on his shoulder.

“You know. It’s different this time.”

“What is? How? They’re going to kill us if we don’t kill them. It’s--”

“We were slinking through their encampment yesterday so I got a good look at their possessions. They worship my mom. So I’ll be able to reason with them. I haven’t been studying Old Norse with Bjarni for nothing.”

And then he plants a kiss on Brant’s temple.

“You’re welcome.”

Brant hides the smile behind his hand and cracks his neck from left to right.

“Alright,” he says. “Make them sorry they hunted us.”
