Lurk Deliver an Emotional Sledgehammer of Extremity
~By Willem Verhappen~
Tumblr media
I have a confession to make: I'm a shallow bastard. At least, I can be when it comes to music. Every so often, I come across a record by a band I don't know and I buy it even though I haven't heard a single note of what's on it. Sometimes, when I have no idea what kind of music it even is, I might do a quick internet search, but often I just buy it. I buy those records for one simple reason: I like the artwork. The thing with this tactic is, sometimes it works out, and sometimes it doesn't.
I also bought 'Fringe' (2018), the third record by Finnish death-doomsters LURK for this reason. The record was originally released in 2016 by the band themselves, but now Transcending Obscurity Records re-released the record with hauntingly beautiful new artwork from Adam Burke.
Hauntingly beautiful is also a good way to describe the music. Not in a pretty way though, for this is still a Finnish band. I'm not sure if it's the lack of sunlight during winter or something else, but the country is home to some of the most depressing bands ever. Lurk certainly is one of them. The four piece mixes death, black and doom metal in a sludgy mix.
Fringe (Atmospheric Sludge/Doom Metal) by LURK (Finland)
Opener "Ostrakismos" is dark, almost ambient-like piece, with even an alto-saxophone thrown in the mix. Expect slow but melodic guitar arpeggios, drenched in reverb and with sufficient feedback. "Tail Blade" has a more traditional structure, with some quality doom riffs and heavy drum hits.
By the end of the second song, it's already clear who the real star of the record is. Vocalist Kimmo Koskinen is a true force to be reckoned with. His grunts are low and dark, sometimes appearing to go subsonic. It's often similar to the most extreme parts of Manne Ikonen (Ghost Brigade). At other times he belts out emotional screams, sporadically bordering those of Amenra's Colin H van Eeckhout. By the time we reach "Elan," Koskinen channels his inner Aaron Stainthorpe, mixing clean vocals with grunts. It must be noted though, that even though his clean vocals are good, he's no match for the My Dying Bride vocalist.
The fact that the vocals are good on this record, does not mean that the music is overpowered by them. Musically, every song firmly holds its ground. Each song is a depression inducing lesson in bleakness. The songs sometimes sound clear, melodic and open, at other times heavy and dense, throwing you on the floor and refusing to let you get up. Once again the comparison with their countrymen from Ghost Brigade isn't far away, but Lurk still manage to kick it up a notch.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Transcending Obscurity is my go-to label for extreme metal and Fringe is no exception. If you're into the Finnish brand of extreme doom metal, the kind that is both beautiful and mercilessly punishing, you're going to love Lurk. They're in the same spectrum as bands such as Ghost Brigade, Swallow The Sun and Hooded Menace, but without sounding like a copy of any of those bands. Go have a listen right now, but be careful, you just might be as broken as the end of "Proteus Syndrome."

Chatting It Up With Kalle & Kimmo of Lurk
~By Shawn Gibson~
First things first: introductions!
Kalle: Yours truly, Kalle Nurmi, can be found beating the skins, a.k.a. drumming. Arttu Pulkkinen on guitar, Eetu Nurmi on bass, and Kimmo Koskinen is always screaming for vengeance. We’ve been active for about ten years now.
'Fringe' (2018), your latest LP, was released on the Transcending Obscurity label over the summer, right?
Kalle: That’s correct, but actually Fringe was originally, although momentarily, released on Bandcamp two years prior. We didn’t have any luck with labels back then and decided just to put it out there, mainly out of frustration. Then Kunal Choksi of Transcending Obscurity got in contact with us, wanting to do a proper release and we quite quickly went with him. You could sense the passion driving him and we knew he was gonna deliver - and he did! Fringe is our third album, preceded by our self-titled debut and our second, Kaldera.
Kimmo: Kunal's dedication has been inspiring. Finally Fringe gets the release it deserves, not least because of the exceptionally amazing art of Adam Burke.
What bands from Finland do you guys like and like to play with?
Kalle: Horse Latitudes, Hooded Menace, Coughdust, Demonic Death Judge, Black Royal -- those are just some that come to mind easily, that we’ve played with. There are loads of great bands from Finland, metal and otherwise, that we’ve not shared a stage with just yet.
Kimmo: There are loads of spirited groups in Finnish underground and different styles interlock smoothly together. We have played with doom, death and black metal bands, in hardcore nights and so on. Passionate and honest atmosphere feeds itself and leads to torrid combinations.
Where are some good places in Finland to see metal or heavy bands play?
Kalle: You can see great underground-bands play at Vastavirta Klubi in Tampere. I’m not sure about the situation in Helsinki at the moment, but I presume Lepakkomies has bands all the time and we’ve played there a lot at one point. More mainstream metal acts can be seen at Klubi, YO-Talo or Olympia in Tampere, and during the summer there’s a festival going on somewhere all the time. For example Tuska is completely dedicated to metal.
What are some of Lurk's influences musically?
Kalle: Oh man, that’s a tricky one! We’ve never decided on a certain sound or a band that we wanted to sound like, so all of our influences were allowed to get in the music. But of course, some bands have bigger weight in our output. For example Celtic Frost, Eyehategod, Neurosis, Entombed, Black Sabbath, Emperor, Burzum and about gazillion other bands. Also artists outside of metal, as Scott Walker’s The Drift is, in my opinion, one of the scariest albums ever made.
What's a damn good book you've read lately?
Kalle: Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, everything by Lovecraft. My most recent favourite book is by legendary Finnish writer Mika Waltari. I had to check online for its English title, it’s called The Etruscan.
What makes you laugh uncontrollably?
Kalle: Human endeavor. Also, cat videos.
The artwork by Adam Burke is amazing! Elan is my favorite song on this album. Please explain what this album means to the band and what the artwork symbolizes.
Kalle: This album means a lot to us. We changed bass players just before making the second album, Kaldera, and that kinda made us want to write differently too, and now with Fringe I think we managed to capture something that was set in motion back in those days. Maybe we are slow learners but this is the album that we wanted to do already back then, we just didn’t know how. We wanted to combine the best parts of our both previous albums and use them to make a goddamn super-album! The art itself wasn’t made to order, but when we saw it there was no question about it. It fits the mood. It’s not completely bleak and void of colour, there are shades and textures. There is also a strong link to nature, and death is ever-present, looming in the background.
Kimmo: Fringe is about the passion and all the human behavior around it. We, as species, have lost and banned big part of our heritage, our primal instincts. What's most important, the honesty has been derogated. Humanity isn't just positive pool of thoughts, and it seems that the world is nowadays living just for the decorative skin. At the same time the self-proclaimed messiahs are conspiring behind our backs, in the name of religion, money and power. But there's so much power to be found from death, rage and beastliness, because those pure things are us. Lurk is the one channeling the vigor and ripping the meaningless crust apart. From the woods we have come and to the woods we are to be buried.
What is in the future for Lurk?
Kalle: New songs, so probably a new album, maybe some gigs. Who knows? The doom-train keeps a-rolling.
You guys have an amazing response to this album and have great reviews how do you feel and how does this motivate you?
Kalle: It’s always good that people like it. Some seem to like it a lot! I’d be making music even without the positive reviews, but they tell us we’re onto something good.
Kimmo: We are making the music for ourselves, first and foremost. But if someone finds it intriguing, I don't blame him or her. If the music makes one think, it has reached the goal.

It's always great to supplement a great audio device with an excellent app. Here's all you need to know about the Sonos App
Not that long time ago, the ones willing to listen to the music in each and every corner of your home didn’t have that much of choice: you either carry the speaker with you or stretch wires between room. But luckily, thanks to the development of digital sphere the music has become a lot more mobile, and now we can have wireless technologies. It is now possible to transfer audio signals from numerous devices to sound system without losing sound quality. There are plenty of tools and techniques to do it, but undoubtedly Sonos has always been and still is the leader and a role model when it comes to wireless Hi-Res sound.

Sonos – is an American company that was established with one purpose – to fill our homes with music. The main features of these loudspeakers are mobility and functionality. To have Sonos work, you must first connect one device to the home speaker, and afterward, you can add up to 32 Sonos devices which can interlink thus creating a massive sound monster. But actually, according to this chart, Sonos speakers would be enough you make your neighbors thinks that there’s a live concert at your place.

Apart from your playing your local music library, Sonos app, as well, includes numerous soft and tools that allow you to manage playlists, discover new artists or find something long ago forgotten. Interface
To say in brief, even a kid can manage it. The app used to be more complex before the latest update; now it is built on intuitive controlling making it as simple in use as possible. In the top right corner there ‘rooms’ connected to the app. In my case, there’s only one Sonos Play:3 in the living room, but as I mentioned before, there can be up to 32 speakers in one network. What’s more, you can name each of them as you wish, for instance, “Living Room,” “Kitchen,” “Bedroom” whatever. And now imagine there’s a Sonos in each of them and they all are connected. You can control them separately or join them in a pair to play different music in different places at different time. You can do it just by a few taps in the Sonos app. That is a well-thought out and convenient system. Note that there's always a window allowing you to stop or resume playback which is rather convenient. If you tap it, you will quickly go to the player main menu. Here you can play/pause, skip, rewind, share, add to favorite/playlist, shuffle, repeat and so on.
Tap on the left to see the main menu. Here you see favorites, playlists, your local library, added music services, internet radio, etc.
In addition to Internet radio, Sonos app also supports a number of popular music services. The connection of such services to the Sonos Controller is carried out from the main menu by tapping 'Add music services.' Then choose the one you need and enter your password and login. In general, the connection process is simple, although for different services it is slightly different in detail. But after they are in Sonos Controller, you can enjoy your favorite music and online playlists with your wireless speakers.
Tap the screen to go to services main menu and discover new compositions using a familiar interface. For example using Apple music with Sonos is nothing different from the original app.
Sonos app supports playlists from iTunes, Windows Media Player and the following online streaming services:
Apple Music,
SoundCloud,
Deezer,
Google Play Music,
BandCamp
MixCloud
TIDAL, and more.
Unfortunately, Spotify has been removed from this list, but you can still enjoy its library if your device with Spotify is connected to the same network as Sonos. If so, you can opt to play music with Sonos directly from the Spotify app with Hi-Res music..
Playlists
Sonos Playlist is one of the features that singles out this app from other “addition-to-device” apps. The thing is when you search for a song or an artist you search it in ALL the services available. It means that if you can’t find someone on Apple Music, no worries, you still have 30+ more services to rely on. Like here, I typed Massive Attack, and it gave me results from both SoundCloud and Apple Music.
To create a playlist tap Playlists to see all the playlists available. To add a song to a Sonos playlist is as easy as this. For example, you want a decent Trip-Hop complication, which might include both well-known and underground artists. As I mentioned, Sonos searches all services available.
Find a song using any service, in this case – Apple Music.

Using Sonos app as Alarm
I reckon it’s a dream of any music admirer to fall asleep and wake up to favorite tracks. Sonos makes it real, using its Alarm option. Just set the time, pick a song and a corresponding Sonos speaker. Waking up has never been that pleasant.
About Hi-Res music
If you prefer listening to HD music Sonos is a great device to experience the uncompressed sound. However, Apple devices in Sonos do not support Hi-Res so you should use a different audio player. There’s no debate, VOX Music Player for Mac & iPhone is the best solution for you.
Sonos App For Mac Air
Here's why:
Support for almost all lossless and lossy formats;
High-quality playback without compression or converting;
Simple iTunes integration;
Synchronization with your with Soundcloud, Last.fm accounts, and other streaming services
There's another great thing which separates VOX from other music players. Since Hi-Res music usually has large size files (one song can be up to 200 MB), it is rather inconvenient to store it on a device. That's why VOX developers introduced a new feature - VOX Music Cloud Storage. It is an unlimited cloud where you can store all your track and never bother about whether you have enough space to get that new album.

Jason Sharp Interview: Skies and the Heavens Above
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
The COVID-19 pandemic has catalyzed a much-needed alteration of the relationship between musicians, the music industry, and consumers. Along with the artists and listeners themselves, many independent record labels and streaming platforms have been at the forefront of this change. Longstanding Montreal-based experimental label Constellation Records was one of the first to establish a pandemic policy, in April promising to artists 100% of digital download revenues from their website and Bandcamp, an initiative that has been extended on a monthly basis and will last till at least the end of the year. Now, they’ve foregone their normal winter album release cycle and launched a series called Corona Borealis, which showcases their roster via one-off longform singles and accompanying videos. 16 artists total will end up participating in the weekly series, which has so far included avant-garde jazz artist Markus Floats, post-rock musician Efrim Manuel Menuck, and violinist/sound artist Jessica Moss. The latest, released today, is saxophonist Jason Sharp, who debuts his first-ever acoustic saxophone track “Gates of Heaven”. Sharp, who employs a circular breathing technique in his playing, recorded the 18-minute track at the synagogue of the same name in Madison, Wisconsin last summer, and it’s been paired with a short film by video artist and curator Guillaume Vallée.
I called Sharp from his home in Montreal last week to talk about the history and composition of the track, collaborating with Vallée on the video, how COVID-19 has affected him, and the importance of establishing new, perhaps permanent economic shifts in the music world. Read our conversation below!
Tumblr media
Since I Left You: What’s the history behind this track?
Jason Sharp: [In June 2019], I was just outside of Chicago recording with Roscoe Mitchell, and we had booked two churches to do our session. We only ended up using one of them, and we were supposed to be recording for three days and ended up using only two. On route to the airport, the engineer [Vid Cousins] and I stopped in this little synagogue, Gates of Heaven, in Madison, WI, and recorded this solo piece. It was a really quick in and out setup, with mics at different distances in and around the building. I did this piece in there, and we left. Honestly, I didn’t really think that much of the recording for a while. It was lost in my archives.
When COVID hit, I had some time to go back through some recordings and came across what I had done nearly a year ago. It spoke to me in a way it didn’t in the moment, and it was nice to rekindle that recording. Editing and mixing during this shutdown period kept the creative juices flowing.
SILY: Was the track entirely improvised?
JS: Yeah, entirely improvised. It’s an 18-minute track, and I improvised a bass layer for 18 minutes and then had the engineer reel it back, and I did a response to that, creating a harmony and melody and improvising in a compositional way. The day before, I was playing in a more traditional improv kind of way. This was more compositionally driven but sourced through improvisation. It was all kind of on the fly. There’s a certain energy when you capture recordings in that way. It’s kind of refreshing to hear after the fact.
SILY: The track seems to have three distinct parts, almost perfectly in thirds. You’ve got the bass layer at first, then the fluttery, more obvious circular breathing-type playing, and in the final bit, you combine the two parts.
JS: The way that we did it, I put a clock in front of me, and it was supposed to be 5 minutes apiece, and it ended up being closer to 6 minutes. I did a take improvising to the clock and already had in mind doing this in three separate sections. The first section was long tones, sustained sounds, bringing up the harmony and the overtones of the notes. The second was more rhythmically driven. As you said, the third was meant to encapsulate some of the other types of approaches used previously. There’s an arpeggiated figure that holds it together and sustained notes reminiscent of the first part. Harmonically, the first two parts are in a minor key, and the final is just three notes, so it ends up being in a major key. It was somewhat predetermined that way but ended up, as you said, being a focal point of the techniques used previously.
SILY: When you’re improvising, to what extent are you paying attention to the space in which you’re playing and taking that into account when making decisions?
JS: That was the nicest thing about recording in that synagogue. It was a beautiful space, a very resonant space providing a lot back. There are some things I was doing to purposefully activate that space. Towards the end, I was doing these blasts and pops to accentuate the resonance of the space itself. Playing some of the higher register of the instrument and vocalizing through it and using the mic sources furthest away from me in the very back of the room created a perception of depth and a far-off cry type of thing to give it some sort of 3D element. When you’re playing in spaces, you’re always playing in the room, but when you’re playing in a rich acoustic environment, you’re not working with a PA. It makes you want to activate the space in a way.
SILY: How did the video come to fruition?
JS: The video is a first-time collaboration with Guillaume Vallée. We have never even met face to face. I was kind of nearing a rough mix and shared that track with him. I was familiar with his work through another peer of mine. I basically gave him carte blanche to do what he wanted with it. I told him the piece was in three separate movements and that the first two were darker shades and the third had a shift in tonality and a different emotional quality to me. That’s basically as much guidance as I gave him knowing what he does--he works with analog film stock and video effects. He said he had a lot of source material that had already been compiled that worked well with the track thematically. There are images of a church that appear towards the end in there that I thought was a quite nice reference to the space itself. For the most part, we were working in parallel: I finished the final mix while he was working independently on the film.
SILY: The video does seem to reflect the song. It fades to black to separate the three parts, and the abstractness of the imagery and color hues follow the dark-to-light trend as well.
JS: I really enjoyed watching it for the first time. He went through his own creative process with some basic structural direction and took it and ran with it in a really great way. I hope we can work together again.
SILY: How has COVID-19 concretely affected you as an artist?
JS: It was significant as it has been for everybody. Artistically, I was supposed to be in the studio recording another record. That was cancelled. I couldn’t be in the studio at the time. I had a European tour which was also cancelled. I was supposed to perform for a lot of other players and projects. Basically, all performance things were at first being rebooked for the fall--and obviously, here we are--and so they were cancelled or rebooked for the summer of 2021. That’s almost a year and a bit of not really performing on a regular basis in the way I’d be used to. It was definitely alarming. My wife and I also own a yoga studio in the neighborhood we live in, the Mile End of Montreal, and that was severely affected as well. It provided a lot of added stress on life that didn’t leave much room for working on things artistically. I was able to squeak out enough time to go through my archive recordings and came across this recording. It was a really rejuvenating thing working on this track. Retreating into the recording was a bit of a saving grace artistically.
Things are being reinvented right now. I just did a live stream event for [Suno Per Il Popolo] and have resumed composing and have a recording date for an upcoming album for Constellation. Bands I’m in are picking up the pieces and dusting themselves off and moving forward in their own right with different ways of documenting work and planning for the future.
Tumblr media
SILY: How important is it to you from an ethical and financial standpoint to be signed to a label like Constellation, who’s willing to forego their normal album release cycle for a few months to have its signees able to release these one-off singles?
JS: This particular initiative is amazing. Constellation has always been such an incredible supportive force for me and all the artists on the roster. They’re so artistically driven. I don’t have a lot of experience with other labels, but it’s a very ethical and supportive relationship. This series exemplifies that. Putting out albums has become almost a calling card for live dates, in my experience. Now that we’re in a position where there aren’t live dates, it’s okay to postpone these physical releases. It’s wonderful they can put out something as a label that showcases the diversity of the artists on the roster. Long-play, but small packages. In many ways, it gives people the opportunity to showcase another side of themselves. Putting out a single doesn’t come with the same gravitas as an album. It allows you to do something outside of what your main focus might be. This is my first acoustic saxophone recording--I’m generally using a lot of electronics or occupying an electroacoustic space. The record I’m working on is very much in that vein, using a lot of modular synths. It’s freeing to be able to step out of the box.
Financially, Bandcamp has been really supportive through this. Constellation stepping up and helping artists get these types of singles out into the world, with the support of their platform, and giving 100% of the revenue to the artists, it’s obviously super supportive and very much appreciated and can do a lot for both the label and the artists involved.
SILY: To what extent do you see this type of release pattern as something that will continue post-pandemic?
JS: It may, and I hope it does. Record cycles are obviously changed right now, and maybe some of the solutions being put in place will find a new home and stick around. Constellation’s mainly focused on vinyl releases, so all these digital releases have a totally different turnaround time. It’s obviously less expensive, and the singles themselves keep the stoke to the artistic flames instead of a usual album cycle. As people are coming up with these solutions during this time, a lot of them were needed, COVID or not. That’s the silver lining, for sure. It’s been illuminating to see people reach people in different ways and create different relationships between artists, the industry, and the consumer. Something of a hybrid of the solutions of where we’re at right now and how we normally operate could be in store.
SILY: Do you think it’s going to change the way you release music, whether self-releasing or doing digital-only releases?
JS: I’ve never really felt the need to self-release. It’s hard to get music out into the world. I’ve definitely been grateful for Constellation’s support. There’s a certain creative process that you go through when you know there’s gonna be a physical release at the end of it. It requires you to germinate a little bit more. I’ve never felt the need to be prolific or the need to constantly be putting something out.
SILY: What else is next for you?
JS: I’m working on this record that’s gonna come out in some form in 2021. I scored an amazing film by Daïchi Saïto. I did his last film and was able to do some live performances with that film in Europe. We worked together on his next film, which will be coming out in 2021. I have a couple more live streamed things and recording projects with different people, but the upcoming record and the film are the biggest documents that will be coming out soon.
SILY: What have you been up to in general during the pandemic?
JS: It’s been really busy, between keeping our small business afloat, which we’re in the second stage of, and spending a lot of time in my studio and sharpening my tools, so to speak. I’ve been working on electronics and building new modules for things I may use for music making in the future. My family lives on the West Coast of Canada, and during the summer, we went out and lived on a boat in the wilderness for a month in the Northern tip of Vancouver Island. We were really far remote and didn’t see anybody for a whole month. It was very special and rejuvenating. The perfect thing to do in these self-isolating times.

Episode #241: Reading from The Thirteenth Hour on Exercise in Seclusion and the Start of Like a Hood Ornament 1
https://archive.org/download/podcast241_202003/Podcast%20241.mp3
On this week’s show, I thought I’d touch on the topic of exercise, specifically what you can do if you happen to be isolated (either due to a global pandemic or imprisoned for other reasons, like Logan in one part of The Thirteenth Hour, which we’ll be reading from shortly.
As it turns out, there’s actually quite a lot you can do even if you can’t go to a gym.  Although being quarantined does not necessarily mean you can’t go outside (the virtues of short duration outdoor physical activity is something we discuss briefly though a scientific paper – see the abstract below), you can do a remarkable amount inside, even if you have little to no equipment.  I’ve done a version of the workout that inspired the little passage in The Thirteenth Hour for decades.  That workout was really nothing special – just having been the body weight exercises we did in martial arts classes and other calisthenics I recall from an old Canadian Air Force fitness manual I had as a kid that we probably got at a garage sale.  If you’re interested, Arnold Schwarzenegger put together a similar routine that is available for people to access here.
Here’s the passage from The Thirteenth Hour:
They’ll break you if you let them.  I wasn’t the strongest person out there, and though I always had hope, now I had purpose again.  I started from the beginning, with my body, the only way I’d learned how.  Every morning, after I woke up, I would wash my face and clothes, if they needed washing.  Then I did calisthenics – pushups, sit–ups, stretching – like I had done when I was in training.  My muscles felt deconditioned from lack of use and malnutrition, so much of my strength had left me, and everything was more difficult now.
It’s hard to take it slow when your never–resting mind can envision all the things it’d like your body to be able to do once more.  But in the end, sometimes it’s best to just get busy trying and spend less time thinking.
When I could comfortably walk around my cell and jog in place, I slowly motioned through the different hand–to–hand combat techniques that I had learned during my training.  Who knows, I thought, if I make a break for it, I’ll need those techniques the most.  After a few weeks, my stamina began to reassert itself, allowing me to wage ongoing battles against that cloaked magician, Klax.  Whenever I felt myself growing tired, I saw his form in my mind and practiced harder.
More than once the guards rushed into my cell, thinking that I had collapsed or died because I was lying face down on the cold stone floor.  I was actually just resting, but my guards had grown somewhat fond of me, they said, and didn’t want anything bad to happen to me.  I was never sure if they were telling the truth or not; I’ll bet Klax would have had their necks if they had been so careless as to let me kill myself without his being able to see.
My agility came back last.  The cell was not large enough for much, but the ceiling was high and my boots were padded, so I figured it was worth a go.  Pretty much anything is, though, after you’ve been cooped up in the same room for weeks.
I tried standing on my hands again, at first with my feet resting against the wall to accustom my arms to the change in weight they’d be frequently bearing in the near future.  Then handstands without the wall.  Then handsprings, and finally, aerial techniques.  As for the latter, the first few times, the guards must have heard the sound of my feet slamming into the stone floor because they came running.  They saw what I was doing, took it as a suicide attempt, doubled their checks on my cell, and, of course, made me stop at once, lest, by golly, I crack my head open on the hard stone floor.  I was too far into my regimen to really care what they thought, and it just meant I had to practice when they were asleep or weren’t looking.  And try to land softer.
There were a few times when I did go overboard and missed beaning my noggin on the stones out of sheer luck.  It goes with the territory … sooner or later, everybody ends up bailing in midair.   One minute you’re in the air, next thing you know, your jump seems off or things just feel weird, and if you have time to think anything at all, that’s about when you think some bad words, along with “this could hurt.”
But I knew that once I regained confidence in my body and what it could do, I would stop bailing.  I knew my body would get used to being in strange positions in the air again, and I knew the best way to not get hurt was to go all out on each technique.  I just wasn’t quite there yet, resulting in a few midair problems and hard landings on an unforgiving stone floor.  I hurt an ankle after a bad landing – an easy thing to do if you’re practicing on a hard, uneven surface like the floor of my cell – but thankfully escaped anything worse.  Luckily, I had a good set of boots – one of the few things Darian’s Army did right – that were light and flexible with thick, padded soles meant to withstand miles upon miles of marching and other abuse.  Later, Aurora found me a mattress, which she intended for me to sleep on (which I did, of course), but what she didn’t know was that it was the mat I used to soften my landings.

So I finally took the plunge and created a little profile on Tik Tok.  To be honest, I don’t get 95% of the stuff on there, but it has some videos of people making stuff and doing flips, so that’s enough for me.  I mainly just use it to post some videos of the resin minifigures I’ve made.  This is the backflip animation whose frames are above.
Today also marks the first Rocketeer segment as a part of the podcast.  Now, obviously, there have been many episode mentions about the Rocketeer before, though here are a few:
–Ep 18 on comics (Dave Stevens)
–Ep 53 on rewatching the Rocketeer as an adult
–Ep 235 on making the resin miniature Rocketeer
But this week’s show marks the first time starting an actual segment (kind of like how I used to do a starving artist segment before) that I’m calling:
https://imgur.com/gallery/yYmEOnO?s=sms
That’s “Like a Hood Ornament” if your interface doesn’t support graphics (that’s you, iTunes show notes).  You may recognize the moniker as a line from the 1991 film.  Today’s we’ll start out with the fictional bio most likely written by Dave Stevens for his protagonist, Cliff, who inspired Logan in many ways.
More coming next week!  Stay safe!

The North Country Primer #4: Nick Jonah Davis, Nottingham, England
Originally published at North Country Primitive in April 2015
The fourth edition of the North Country Primer takes us closer to home to interview a man who lives a mere 70 miles away, in Nottingham, England. Nick Jonah Davis is the first, but hopefully not the last, British guitarist to feature at North Country Primitive.  Tompkins Square included him on the fourth volume of their excellent Imaginational Anthem series, and liked his music so much they released his album, Of Time and Tides . His new album, House of Dragons, has just been released in a limited vinyl edition by Shropshire's top shed-based record label, the wonderful and ever-eclectic Lancashire and Somerset - and to these humble ears, is his best offering yet.
Tumblr media
Tell us a bit about yourself and the musical journey that took you to a place where you concluded that playing an acoustic guitar on your own was a good idea... Well...  I was a guitarist from the age of fifteen and the first solo acoustic stuff I heard was on Led Zeppelin records. That led me to Bert Jansch and Davy Graham, and from there I found that playing acoustic guitar in DADGAD was a very compelling thing to do. I did this in the background of other musical endeavours for a long time, maybe fifteen years. What I was really focused on was trying to do electronic music, with mixed-to-poor results. Then I stopped completely. Following a failed attempt to carry out CPR on a woman in a car park in 2006, I impulsively bought an acoustic I'd spotted in a junk shop to cheer myself up. Around this time, my brother gave me a Fahey album and I saw Jack Rose play: I realised that there might be a context for my acoustic playing that wasn’t just doing it for myself at home. I decided to record a few pieces in 2007, and put them on the internet to try and get some local gigs. Josh at Tompkins Square was into it and got in touch, which was absolutely improbable to me. If you’d told me when I was checking out the first Imaginational Anthem compilations that I’d have a tune on the fourth volume and be putting out an LP with Tompkins Square and playing the New York Guitar Festival, I really would not have believed you. The positive reception for the Of Time and Tides album was really pleasing. What has influenced your music and why? The most direct ‘famous guitarist’ type influences are John Fahey and Bert Jansch: to me, they represent two really important streams of excellent guitar music which will always be bubbling away. Really, though, the best influences come from the people that playing has brought me into personal contact with. C Joynes and Steve Malley aka the Horse Loom have had a huge influence on both the music I’ve made and the course I’ve taken with it. I’ve been lucky to play gigs with players that I really admire and that’s a direct influence that’s hard to quantify - just watching them up close and then also being able to say ‘How did you do x or y back there?’ Ultimately, when you set off on a particular route with the guitar, such as in this case ‘I’ll use weird tunings, play solo and try to get inside people’s heads,’ the possibilities and limitations of that approach become your core influence. I know a really disparate range of musicians who are all deeply into their thing and it’s a constant inspiration to have these people around me. What are your thoughts about being a UK based musician steeped in what could be argued is a largely American form? I suppose what draws me to the American Primitive approach to guitar is that it lets you explore ideas from a variety of musical cultures at the same time, using techniques drawn from a folk style as the basic platform. Despite the intensity of focus on American players who have done this, I don't really perceive this as wildly different to what people like Davy Graham and Bert Jansch were doing. A lot of what I dig on guitar has an American accent, a lot has a British accent, but there are a whole host of cultural reference points that weave in and out of my playing. I don't find it straightforward to play entirely within the constraints of any one tradition. What have you been up to recently? As ever, I'm always trying to get deeper into my playing - that's ongoing. We've just put out my new LP, House of Dragons, on Lancashire and Somerset Records, a lovely little label operating out of a shed in Shropshire. I’m extremely pleased with the gorgeous package they’ve put together - they are great people to deal with. I’m now halfway through the sessions for the next record. I’ve also been collaborating with my friend, the violinist Jo Cormack, on some semi-improvised electric guitar and violin music as Fains. I like her playing a lot, she can really kick an idea around without needing to be too precious about things, dropping things or picking them up according to the moment, which really works for me. What are you listening to right now, old or new? Any recommendations you’d like to share with us? Here's some random people I really like  that other people may be unaware of and are all worth investigating: Ellen Mary McGee, Raul Garcia Zarate, Kogumaza, Dead Rat Orchestra, Suzuki Junzo, Antigoni Goni, Lungfish, Cath and Phil Tyler, Alasdair Roberts, Zia Mohiuddin Dagar andForever Sound. In the fingerstyle world, two young British players who are worth checking out are Toby Hay and Jim Ghedi. The guitar nerd bit: what guitars do you play and what do you like about them? Is there anything out there you’re coveting? My main acoustic is a custom Fylde Falstaff, which I picked up recently. It's a dream instrument and has all but replaced my Martin. I play an Ermanno Pasqualato Style 3 Weissenborn guitar for lap steel, it's a sweet sounding and responsive beast. On the electric side, I have a much customised mid-90s telecaster. It sounds great - it's got a lot of attitude. For electric lap steel I have a 1948 Selmer, which is a historic and utterly beautiful instrument. C Joynes presented me with it as a surprise gift last year, and I'm still surprised. I have a bunch of other guitars and a little collection of other instruments. Coveting: I'd really like a Brook Hurdy Gurdy. There's basically an endless list though - ask my wife about it... Banjos: yes or no? Absolutely yes. I have one that I like to fiddle around with from time to time. Anyone who says they don't like banjos needs to listen to records by Shirley Collins, Nathan Bowles, Paul Metzger and Phil Tyler to ensure that they have an informed perspective on the situation. What are you planning to do next? I'm planning to finish my next solo guitar album. Jo and I are talking about doing a Fains record. C Joynes and I have a split electric LP that's at the mastering stage. Other collaborations are possibly bubbling up. I'll just keep playing, see what happens. I keep a fairly open mind - it seems to help... What should we have asked you and didn't? If you find out, let me know.

The boats stack up as they wait for the lock The captain’s at the table and he’s glad for the stop He’s got a place he can saddle his shoes Feet on the land and a drink with his crew
Time will pass years will go Memories fade stories grow Here at The Turning Point I’ve come to know Peace is found in the afterglow
The mood is up as the sun goes down And the sky rolls over Spijkerboor town Nobody here feels a stranger’s weight As the night unfolds the stories are told God this place has a home in my soul
Two men who met their fate One robbed one killed by the state He thought he’d sneak on through But cut down as suspicion grew
A place for medication, a home for a school A place for an army to gather and rule And when they lined up the locals to vet They couldn’t find where the secrets where kept
The mood is up as the sun goes down And the sky rolls over Spijkerboor town Nobody here feels a stranger’s weight As the night unfolds the stories are told God this place has a home in my soul
And there may be nothing in a young man’s eyes But give him time and he’ll awake inside If it’s what you want stars will align Don’t let others change your mind
They come from east, they come from west Music is a force that pounds underneath your chest Nobody here feels the stranger’s weight As the night unfolds the stories are told God this place has a home in my soul

‘Afterglow’ tells the story of a special place, a place we’ve visited each time Robb and the band were touring in The Netherlands; Café ‘t Keerpunt in Spijkerboor. Spijkerboor is a small village in Drenthe (province in the north of The Netherlands) with a peaceful and rural character. I remember walking into the pub for the first time and we were welcomed by the owner, Willem Dijkema, his wife Anneke and dog Skipper. It felt like stepping back in time. The pub breathes history and there’s a story attached to everything you see in the pub. From the pictures and instruments on the walls, to the cabinet behind the bar and the jukebox.
The story of the ‘t Keerpunt starts around 1750 when a lock keeper started a small pub for captains who had to wait at the ship lock. Since then the pub had 11 different owners, but until today the pub still exists. It stood the test of time.
‘t Keerpunt (translated to English: The Turning Point) is the heart of the village. It’s where locals come in to have a drink, eat and talk and it’s where events and activities take place. It’s not only locals visiting the pub. The pub is known for its live music, poetry, literature and plays. Artists from all over the world have performed there and people come from far to see their favourite artists play there.
A few years ago Willem asked Robb if he would be up for writing a song about ‘t Keerpunt. More artists did the same and Willem explained that he wanted to make a compilation CD of songs about ‘t Keerpunt. Robb didn’t have to think twice about it and right away said yes to that request. This compilation CD will be released later on this year when Willem and Anneke will celebrate their 20 year ownership.
Each time Robb and the band performed at ‘t Keerpunt it feels like coming home. Many great memories were made there. The kindness, warmheartedness, the hospitality, the history… this pub is one of a kind. And this is what the song is about. Afterglow… a song about Café ‘t Keerpunt, a place where the stories and the music will never stop.
You can download ‘Afterglow’ on Bandcamp NOW! https://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/track=3588514260/size=small/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/

Episode 124 : Trophies
"I will not lose."
- Jay-Z
Back on the road after an unscheduled absence, and now with a fully operational battle station (see my IG stories for more). This month's selection starts with a few tracks to test your audio installation, remembers 2Pac twenty-three years after he passed, and is pretty much guaranteed to hit you with at least one track you didn't already know! Let's begin...

Playlist/Notes
Federation ft. Daz Dillinger : We Ride
I've been banging this one hard for months, and it seemed like an appropriate one to start the episode with! That little pre-chorus amuses and entertains in equal measure, and gives a breather each time before Rick Rock's stomping beat comes crashing back in. This is a great tune from Federation's 2004 eponymous first album, and they rep Fairfield hard on the mic while also bringing in Daz from Tha Dogg Pound for a cosign from a veteran. One to crank your car system to, for sure!
DJ Quik : Ladies & Thugs (Instrumental)
This is far from my favourite track on the excellent "Trauma" album, but the beat fit really well here - and DJ Quik was generous enough to release an instrumental version of this album for us to hear his wicked beats taking centre stage.
Jay-Z ft. Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, and Static Major : Change The Game
Keeping it west coast on the production, Rick Rock is on the boards once again with what was arguably his national break-out tune. Jay-Z scooped up some of that Bay Area mob music vibe on this one, and featured two of the foremost MCs of the Roc-A-Fella roster of the time. The hook was provided by the sadly departed Static Major, and it fits perfectly. This was a big single from "The Dynasty : Roc La Familia", but didn't make anywhere near as much noise on the charts as the track that followed it on the LP - "I Just Wanna Love U".
80s Babies ft. Chaka B : Technology
This crew is made up of Tall Black Guy on the beats and Dee Jackson AKA Shogun on the mic, and their "Sonic Music" album is somehow almost ten years old already. "Technology" and the track that follow just happen to fit together nicely, with no deliberate plan to have a tech critique theme in this section! The lyrics lament the state of the modern world when it comes to our reliance on technological solutions, with some maybe being more useful than others. TBG is dope on the beat as always, and if you pay attention you may hear a little callback to a track from his hometown of Detroit...
OutKast ft. George Clinton : Synthesizer
George Clinton was a big feature to get when this came out on "Aquemini", and I'm sure he was drawn to OutKast's outer space vibes. This was released in 1998, pre-social media and in what was almost another technological age - despite this, the themes discussed have held up surprisingly well for a track over twenty years old. As much as anything, maybe OutKast were just rapping ahead of their time!
2Pac ft. Dogg Pound, Method Man, and Redman : Got My Mind Made Up
This is one of my favourites from the over-long "All Eyez On Me" album, but the background to this one is weird. There's about half a bar of background vocal from Inspektah Deck right at the end - he actually recorded a whole verse (as did Lady of Rage) which was omitted from the final version after a mix-up when tapes were being transferred. Daz Dillinger did the production as well as rhyming on the track with his Dogg Pound compatriot Kurupt, but Dr Dre allegedly claimed it at one point. Meth and Red somehow didn't get any publishing or plaques from this track, despite being major artists at the time who contributed typically dope verses. Industry rule #4080...
[K-Murdock] & Mega Ran : Player Two (Instrumental)
The vocal version of this from "Forever Famicom" is well worth hearing, but for now you get to hear just K-Murdock's quality beat. It works in groups of three bars, so catches you a little off-balance at first!
Blu & Oh No ft. Definite, Ca$hus King, and M.E.D : Boogie To Flex
From "A Long Red Hot Los Angeles Summer Night", we have tales of when the party goes all the way wrong and the gangsta business sets off! Oh No's beat is somehow bright and dark at once, bringing the tension, and every single guest MC brings it to the point that Blu only needs to come in with the perfectly-done hook.
Royce Da 5'9" ft. Tre Little, Cha Cha, Cut Throat, Jah 5'9", and Billie Nix : D-Elite, Pt. II
Both parts of this mini-series to the B-side of the pretty so-so "You Can't Touch Me" once again proves Chuck D right! I actually prefer the first one overall, but it's very short and tonally wouldn't fit here. Part II is no slouch, with Alchemist on production and a host of guest MCs - the D-Elite of the title, who Royce cedes the floor to.
Reks : Forrest Gump
I'm wondering if the 2013 "Revolution Cocktail" album has been deleted - I can't find it on Amazon, Spotify, or even Bandcamp! Listen to it if you get chance because there is some serious heat on there from the Lawrence, MA veteran.
Curren$y : Billy Ocean
When the going gets tough, the tough get blunted. New Orleans' own Curren$y is on some paid rapper lifestyle business on this selection from "The Spring Collection" mixtape. Cardo and Sledgren provide the midtempo but chilled beat.
Luxury Elite : Upscale
A little vaporwave instrumental break courtesy of West Virginia's Luxury Elite, from her "World Class" album. So eighties, so good.
Tobe Nwigwe : Mo City Don Freestyle
I'm going to keep telling you how ill this Houston MC is until you believe me for real! Pure bars on this track that pays homage to the legendary Z-Ro's "Mo City Don" freestyle from his "Let The Truth Be Told" LP - which itself pays respect to the great Eric B & Rakim's "Paid In Full". Don't ever believe that real Hip-Hop isn't still alive and well in our era.
Zion I ft. Pep Love : Warrior's Dance
Back to the "Deep Water Slang v2.0" LP for a track that's motivational and bouncing at the same time - nothing less than you'd expect of this crew from Oakland, home of the Black Panthers! Fellow Oakland MC Pep Love of the Hieroglyphics family guests on here, taking half of each verse as well as the very last rhymes of the final verse. This is a salute to freedom fighters over a solid Amp Live beat.
Large Professor : Live In Stereo
This is very distinctly new-era (well, 2002) Large Pro, with the more electronic sound he started developing after the SP-1200 days that first made his name. The "1st Class" LP is Large Pro's second album, but the first to actually be released after "The LP" was shelved by Geffen and subsequently heavily bootlegged - finally surfacing in 2009.
Wretch 32 and Avelino ft. Bobii Lewis and Super N£ro : Nothing Will
This is such heat, and may well have slipped past the radar of many. Wretch 32 and Avelino are MCs who represent Tottenham heavy - at the time of this recording, Wretch being a relative veteran and Avelino the up-and-comer. A standout on the 2015 "Young Fire, Old Flame" mixtape, this tune has all MCs dropping deep quotables all over the DJ Smasherelly track, and Bobii Lewis with a great performance on the hook too.
Pete Rock : Heaven & Earth
A gentle head-nodder from a man who has been bringing us classic production for almost thirty years now! If you like this, be sure to get the "Petestrumentals 2" album.
Nas : We Will Survive
After watching the episodes of the latest "Hip-Hop Evolution" series on the tragic beef between Death Row and Bad Boy, this track stood out for me while listening to Nas' third album "I Am". It's definitely one of the best on the LP in my opinion, with Nas speaking on his relationships with the late 2Pac and Biggie Smalls. The beat is a reflective number by Trackmasters and Jamal Edgerton, working a (cleared!) Kenny Loggins sample. This was a fitting song to end the episode with.
Please remember to support the artists you like! The purpose of putting the podcast out and providing the full tracklist is to try and give some light, so do use the songs on each episode as a starting point to search out more material. If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. Seeing your favourite artists live is the best way to put money in their pockets, and buy the vinyl/CDs/downloads of the stuff you like the most!
  Check out this episode!
