Dragon Quest Week: Saturday- Draw Anything
I don’t really draw, but I do crochet! So have a WIP of my Malroth amigurumi.
Tumblr media
He is literally the size of a small child, and a total pain in the ass to make. I finally got all his arms into place today.
I have been posting more updates on my instagram (agent0chaos), so if you are interested in seeing more, check it out.
I really enjoyed Dragon Quest week and all the prompts, kudos to whoever organized this! It’s nice sharing the love of the games, and see how much it brings people together.

I've been doing DQWEEK2020 on Twitter, and only now posting them here as well haha.
DAY 1: Favorite Mainline Game - Dragon Quest XI, my first DQ game and the game that got me to love the franchise in the first place. Good story, great characters, awesome gameplay. One day I played it for 8 hours straight and still wanted to play more, I love it to bits and it will always have a special place in my heart.

Dragon Quest Week 2020 Challenge | Sunday: Favorite main game
My choice is easily Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
My first main DQ game was IV on the DS, and I loved it. Going into V, I expected more of the same “save the world, you’re the chosen one” shtick. And while you do end up finding the chosen one eventually and defeating the lord of hell and all that jazz, it also subverted many expectations I had because of IV. You are not the legendary hero! There are plenty of other interesting twists that I won’t spoil, but it’s fascinating. Granted, you’re still royalty, but it still shook things up.
The original game was a bit rough. Having only three party members in battle in a game with a massive roster full of recruitable monsters was a bizarre choice. Also, the narrative felt a bit disappointing when the main antagonist responsible for your suffering is defeated halfway through. The remakes fix these issues and elevate V to one of the best RPGs I’ve ever played. The huge number of playable characters makes for varied party combinations, and Ladja’s role is expanded to make his final showdown more dramatic and satisfying.
The personal story is so unique for a DQ game. I loved the characters, and seeing how they and the world they populate changed over three generations was fascinating. V is what truly made me a big fan of DQ, my favorite series.

Dragon Quest Week 2020 Challenge | Monday: Favorite Character
I might have gone with any of Deborah, Maribel, Malroth, or Morrie - but in the end I’m selecting Tsarevna Alena! She’s fast, she’s strong, she crits like there’s no tomorrow... she’s absolutely one of my favorite character archetypes. But it was the Dragon Quest Heroes series that sold me on her. She’s fearless, she’s quirky, she’s like 5 foot nothing. Her dialogue is lots of fun and I always enjoy having her on my team.

Dragon Quest Week 2020 Challenge | Monday: Favorite character
I chose Maribel from Dragon Quest VII
I remember when this game was being showcased on Nintendo Treehouse and someone Japanese said that Maribel was one of the first tsundere characters in media.
Maribel is snobbish and pushy and treats the Hero like a servant, but deep down she really cares for him and her other friends as the game progresses. Also I find her really funny, this is probably my favorite party chat with her:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was harder than picking my favorite game, shoutouts to the other characters that almost made it here: Princess of Moonbrooke, Alena (and to some extent, the entire DQ4 party), DQ5 Hero, DQ7 Hero and Sylvando

DQWeek2020, Sunday - Fav Main Series Title
i’ve only played 2 of the main series titles, that being dragon quest 8 and dragon quest 11, so my favorite for both nostalgia reasons and because its an amazing game, its gotta be dq8
((long post, putting this stuffles under the cut)
Tumblr media
this game is just- i have nothing bad to say about it (aside from the outdated graphics, but it was a ps2 title but at the time this was god tier in my eyes, plus the graphics nowadays arent that bad!)
i played this game when i was around 6 years old with mainly my dad, sometimes my mom, and wow was it fun. I bonded a lot with my parents through square enix titles, and to this day squeenix is by far our favorite creators for games
my parents tell me about how they’ve always been into squeenix titles, namely the final fantasy series starting with 7 (woohoo for the remake!), so by the time i was born and playing video games my dad graciously introduced me to the title: Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
you can imagine how cool i felt telling kids at school “i know what a roman numeral is!”
while i don’t have distinct memories with memories of every single little scene, something i will always remember is running around as jessica in the bunny costume in the casino for literal hours while my dad just wanted to progress to the next battle (tl;dr, i think she was my gay awakening and i didnt even realize it)
all bonding with family aside, something else i remember and i remember loving was the monster arena! it was so cool actually fighting against other monsters... as monsters! albeit my mind is blurry so i dont remember how the monster arena worked in full, i remember spending countless of hours trying to find this one slime monster for the arena
and the music? the music for the game??? astounding, absolutely incredible in my opinion. so much jus,,, nostalgia, it makes me smile just having the open area theme play in my mind (so glad dragon quest 11 added 8′s soundtrack as an option in the switch version, its a blessing)
all in all, i would definitely give it a replay at some point when i get my ps2 hooked up to my tv, it’s honestly one of my favorite games of all time and i am happy that it’s so widely popular! i thought barely anyone knew what it was lol
dq8 became the base of what grew to be my love for RPGs and really any story-driven game! also just... yangus. yangus is great.
play it for yangus.

Dragon Quest Week: Day 2 Favorite Character
Not a surprise, but it’s this idiot
Tumblr media
There was something so fun about having him around and all the chaos that ensued. Hands down the best partner NPC I had in a while, and I really enjoyed the friendship that builds up in the game (followedbythecrushingblowofmoonbrooke).
I also really like his god form too. The design is just awesome!
The bastard TPK me four times before I beat him.

DQWeek2020 Day 2: Favorite Character - Sylvando
Admittedly if I had the option to put the entire DQXI party on here I would, but Sylvando had become my absolute favorite. Hs arc was wonderful, I love his positive and flamboyant attitude, and his parade was easily one of the best, if not the best, part of the whole game for me. And on top of that, he’s been my favorite character to draw :D

Dragon Quest Week 2020 Challenge | Monday: Favorite character
DQ is a sea of good characters imo, with many favorite boys and girls such as Alena, Torneko, Harry, Debora, Carver, Milly, Ashlynn, Maribel, Ruff, Kiefer, Red, Medea, Yangus, Erinn, Veronica, Serena, Sylv, Boy Malroth...
But ultimately i chose Maribel from Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten World. Nothing wrong with any of the others i mentioned, but I just love how bold, daring, caring, fun, strong and outspoken she is. Her banter with Kiefer and Ruff is delightful. I started reading the DQVII manga a while ago since it started getting localized here in Spain and hoo boy, what a good manga! Their portrayal of the trio (we’re getting the third book tomorrow!) is incredible, made me like them even more. Auster speaking is such an upgrade! Makes me wish we got a DQ game with a talking protagonist ;p
Anyway, back to Maribel: I like how the game gives subtle and not-so-subtle clues on why she acts the way she does. How we know she envies Auster for being a boy -which means greater freedom., not being the son of the mayor -even greater freedom-, and instead being the son of a great fisherman -thats her dream job, she wants to go fishing with other townsfolk; thats why she tries to infiltrate the ship in the beginning of the game-. Sure, she’s mean to him and Kiefer (similar to Auster, but he does whatever he wants regardless of his responsabilities... which she also ends doing but yeah), but she’s kind to many others through the game, starting with Maeve in the first island the trio visits.
And her growth during the game! Subtle but effective, mostly done through party chat but also through main story dialog. That’s the reason i usually pick Debora in my DQV replays, but Maribel is more enjoyable to me because its longer.
In conclusion: writting this post made me realize i need to replay VII this summer.

Dragon Quest Week 2020 Challenge | Monday: Favorite Character
It’s hard to pick one, but I’m going to say Sylvando from XI.
He’s a super amusing and interesting character with a ton of personality. I appreciate that SquEnix included a flamboyant character who also had more to his character, and wasn’t reduced to merely jokes. He was also useful in battle, and I used him in my main party most of the time.
Honorable mentions include Ragnar, Pankraz, Amos, Kiryl, and Alena.

Dragon Quest Week 2020 Challenge | Tuesday: Favorite monster
Now for today. My favorite monster is the Snowbird, but when I first started playing it was known as Blizzardy. My first time finding one was in Dragon Warrior Monsters - an event in the game lets you breed a monster with an Iceman (Firn Fiend) from another master named Teto. I chose a Dracky and the end result was this guy.  And holy crap the end result was amazing. Great stats? Check. Levels up like greased lightning? Check. An array of support and offensive spells with the MP and smarts to use them well? Check. I always go for Blizzardy when I replay the game.
Of course, I also love Phoenix and the Rainhawk I inevitably combine them into. But I think Blizzardy is the one I end up enjoying the most of them all.
Oh, and in Dragon Quest 5, it also learns Multiheal. So that’s pretty neat.

Dragon Quest Week 2020 Challenge | Sunday: Favorite main game
I picked Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride and VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past
I’m sorry but I could not pick one, I love these two games and also they are the only two DQ games I own physically.
DQ5 was the third DQ game I played and the first one I owned physically (the DS version). I instantly fell in love with the characters and the story, when I first played it I just couldn’t predict what was going to happen next and that had me really hooked.
As for DQ7, this may sound a little dramatic but this game kind of saved my life. 2016 was a very hard year for me because I started having depression and I was struggling to find a reason to live. I really wanted the 3DS version of VII to get localized since it was announced in Japan in 2012, finally the game got localized 4 years later, 2016. This game was my reason for staying a little longer, I HAD to play this game, also I worked for 2 weeks at a shop just to buy it
If I have to pick JUST one game, I think I would pick DQ5, but DQ7 has a special place in my heart that it needed to be included in this post.
