@nasajpl: As part of the kickoff for Lightyear, @chrisevans visited @nasa JPL and interviewed @astromarshburn, who consulted on the movie, as well as members aboard the @iss. During their interview, Chris asked Tom Marshburn about what it's like to see Earth from space and @astro_watkins mentioned the hardest part of adjusting to work in zero gravity. Chris also spoke with Suzy Dodd, project manager for Voyager. She talked about the images that will be released from @nasawebb, which will give us more insight into the mysteries of our universe. Chris ended his interviews with a little souvenir - a @nasaartemis boarding pass that will travel on the uncrewed Artemis I mission to the Moon.

Find the Word Tag
Yes, another. I got tagged by @ceph-the-writing-spook this time. Thank you! And I’m implementing the suggested rule (as posed by @marinesocks ) to insert a cool fact about the project should I not have the word. Since I had… only one of these. My words were…
Collapse:
I… somehow don’t have this one yet! So a fun fact about the setting is, to distinguish majors and years, all students of all the academies wear capelets. The color denotes their major, while the shade of it denotes year.
Beyond:
Twice, Simone has seen the frenzy students whipped themselves into as they decorated their rooms. Walls, carpets, doors, nothing is spared from exorbitance, undone at the end with the flourish of a spellbook. Unlike her peers, however, Nadia has never been one for spectacle. Simone nudges her blank door open with a couple harsh bumps of their hip—she really should talk to the administrators about getting the latch fixed—and stumbles into the darkness beyond.
“Nadia?”
No response. Simone eases the door shut behind them and taps the lamp to their side. Golden light floods the room, illuminating the worn upholstered couch and scratched-up table. The rug beneath them is grayed with dirt.
Seal:
I also don’t have this one, it appears! The next fun fact I’ll share is that on top of textbooks and photographs and black and white videos, colleges also have access to vocite, a special kind of magic stone that acts like a voice recorder. This technology is how the prologue is framed through, starting with this disclaimer at the very beginning:
The following is the last recordings of Dr. Chloe Duval, transcribed in accordance with the applicable sections of the Laws for Miasmic Interaction. Copies of the transcribed vocite provided with permission by the Arcane Coalition for Academic Study (ACAS)
Regret:
and… don’t have this one, either. I think the fun fact I’ll share here is that dragons used to exist in this world, a really really really long time ago. The descendants that came after them were drakes, which saw a lot of use in warfare for a while (there’s a reason they were called the Draconic Wars). As science has gotten better, so has genetic experimentation and natural selection, so there are finally “dragons” again… but they are very tiny and do not breathe fire and are kinda vanity pets at this point. No, Nadia does not have one. She has a cat. But still, pet dragons. They’re like. Cat sized.
Blur:
and… yet another one I don’t have. I’m still early-ish into the project. The most likely place this word would appear (and yet didn’t in the draft I have) is the scene where Nadia and Simone take Serenity (a fantasy drug derived from miasma, the toxic magic by-product/fungus thing). The fun thing about this drug is if multiple people take it together, you can experience shared hallucinations of your minds melding together and other fun/weird shit. Which brings me to my fun fact: Serenity is used in hospital settings to try to help amnesiac patients, or those with Alzheimer’s, and is a special kind of therapy resource as well. Not that this is how Nadia chooses to use it, but…
Tagging: @draculinawrites @kashacreates @aninkwellofnectar @calicojackofficial @magic-is-something-we-create your words are: leaf, flame, space, point, and book!

Science: What Is The Multiverse—And Is There Any Evidence It Really Exists?
Scientists can only see so far before they run into the edge of the universe. Will we ever know if anything lies beyond?

What lies beyond the edges of the observable universe? Is it possible that our universe is just one of many in a much larger multiverse?
Movies can’t get enough of exploring these questions. From superhero blockbusters like Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to indie darling Everything Everywhere All at Once, science fiction stories are full of creative interactions between alternate realities. And depending on which cosmologist you ask, the concept of a multiverse is more than pure fantasy or a handy storytelling device.
Humanity’s ideas about alternate realities are ancient and varied—in 1848 Edgar Allan Poe even wrote a prose poem in which he fancied the existence of “a limitless succession of Universes.” But the multiverse concept really took off when modern scientific theories attempting to explain the properties of our universe predicted the existence of other universes where events take place outside our reality.
“Our understanding of reality is not complete, by far,” says Stanford University physicist Andrei Linde. “Reality exists independently of us.”
If they exist, those universes are separated from ours, unreachable and undetectable by any direct measurement (at least so far). And that makes some experts question whether the search for a multiverse can ever be truly scientific.
Will scientists ever know whether our universe is the only one? We break down the different theories about a possible multiverse—including other universes with their own laws of physics—and whether many versions of you could exist out there.
What is a Multiverse?
The multiverse is a term that scientists use to describe the idea that beyond the observable universe, other universes may exist as well. Multiverses are predicted by several scientific theories that describe different possible scenarios—from regions of space in different planes than our universe, to separate bubble universes that are constantly springing into existence.
The one thing all these theories have in common is that they suggest the space and time we can observe is not the only reality.
Okay … But Why Do Scientists Think There Could Be More Than One Universe?
“We cannot explain all the features of our universe if there’s only one of them,” says science journalist Tom Siegfried, whose book The Number of the Heavens investigates how conceptions of the multiverse have evolved over millennia.
“Why are the fundamental constants of nature what they are?” Siegfried wonders. “Why is there enough time in our universe to make stars and planets? Why do stars shine the way they do, with just the right amount of energy? All of those things are questions we don’t have answers for in our physical theories.”
Siegfried says two possible explanations exist: First, that we need newer, better theories to explain the properties of our universe. Or, he says, it’s possible that “we’re just one of many universes that are different, and we live in the one that’s nice and comfortable.”
What Are Some of The More Popular Multiverse Theories?
Perhaps the most scientifically accepted idea comes from what’s known as inflationary cosmology, which is the idea that in the minuscule moments after the big bang, the universe rapidly and exponentially expanded. Cosmic inflation explains a lot of the observed properties of the universe, such as its structure and the distribution of galaxies.
“This theory at first looked like a piece of science fiction, although a very imaginative one,” says Linde, one of the architects of cosmic inflationary theory. “But it explained so many interesting features of our world that people started taking it seriously.”
One of the theory’s predictions is that inflation could happen over and over again, perhaps infinitely, creating a constellation of bubble universes. Not all of those bubbles will have the same properties as our own—they might be spaces where physics behaves differently. Some of them might be similar to our universe, but they all exist beyond the realm we can directly observe.
What Are Some Other Ideas?
Another compelling type of multiverse is called the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, which is the theory that mathematically describes how matter behaves. Proposed by physicist Hugh Everett in 1957, the many-worlds interpretation predicts the presence of branching timelines, or alternate realities in which our decisions play out differently, sometimes producing wildly different outcomes.
“Hugh Everett says, Look, there’s actually an infinite number of parallel Earths, and when you do an experiment and you get the probabilities, basically all that proves is that you live on the Earth where that was the outcome of that experiment,” says physicist James Kakalios of the University of Minnesota, who has written about the physics (or not) of superheroes. “But on other Earths, there’s a different outcome.”
According to this interpretation, versions of you could be off living the many different possible lives you could have led if you’d made different decisions. However, the only reality that’s perceptible to you is the one you inhabit.
So Where Do All of Those Other Earths Exist?
They’re all overlapping in dimensions we can’t access. MIT’s Max Tegmark refers to this type of multiverse as a Level III multiverse, where multiple scenarios are playing out in branching realities.
“In the many-worlds interpretation, you still have an atomic bomb, you just don’t know exactly when it’s going to go off,” Linde says. And maybe in some of those realities, it won’t.
By contrast, the multiple universes predicted by some theories of cosmic inflation are what Tegmark calls a Level II multiverse, where fundamental physics can be different across the different universes. In an inflationary multiverse, Linde says, “you do not even know if, in some parts of the universe, atomic bombs are even possible in principle.”
So if I want to meet myself, how do I get there? Can we travel between multiverses?
Unfortunately, no. Scientists don’t think it’s possible to travel between universes, at least not yet.
“Unless a whole lot of physics we know that’s pretty solidly established is wrong, you can’t travel to these multiverses,” Siegfried says. “But who knows? A thousand years from now, I’m not saying somebody can’t figure out something that you would never have imagined.”
Is There Any Direct Evidence Suggesting Multiverses Exist?
Even though certain features of the universe seem to require the existence of a multiverse, nothing has been directly observed that suggests it actually exists. So far, the evidence supporting the idea of a multiverse is purely theoretical, and in some cases, philosophical.
Some experts argue that it may be a grand cosmic coincidence that the big bang forged a perfectly balanced universe that is just right for our existence. Other scientists think it is more likely that any number of physical universes exist, and that we simply inhabit the one that has the right characteristics for our survival.
An infinite number of alternate little pocket universes, or bubbles universes, some of which have different physics or different fundamental constants, is an attractive idea, Kakalios says. “That’s why some people take these ideas kind of seriously, because it helps address certain philosophical issues,” he says.
Scientists argue about whether the multiverse is even an empirically testable theory; some would say no, given that by definition a multiverse is independent from our own universe and impossible to access. But perhaps we just haven’t figured out the right test.
Will We Ever Know If Our Universe is Just One of Many?
We might not. But multiverses are among the predictions of various theories that can be tested in other ways, and if those theories pass all of their tests, then maybe the multiverse holds up as well. Or perhaps some new discovery will help scientists figure out if there really is something beyond our observable universe.
“The universe is not constrained by what some blobs of protoplasm on a tiny little planet can figure out, or test,” Siegfried says. “We can say, This is not testable, therefore it can’t be real—but that just means we don’t know how to test it. And maybe someday we’ll figure out how to test it, and maybe we won’t. But the universe can do whatever it wants.”

Part 6
December 30th, Cordonia's Royal Palace...
Tomorrow night’s event might be the first ball in the history of Drake's years in Cordonia to actually cause a certain excitement. He usually put up with the pomp and traditions to simply be with those he cared about. For years it was to support Liam, then going meant he could hang out with Riley, Hana, and Maxwell.
And then there were his activities down in secret for a year with Olivia.
He knew she would be arriving soon. Her absence from Cordonia had been one he felt more acutely than any other. His failure in telling her how he felt about her, his inability to have a civil conversation, even his voicemail had kept him fixated on this date.
He intended for this new year to involve a new relationship with Olivia. He simply needed to find a moment alone with her.
Which as he entered the drawing room Riley and Liam used frequently for their closest friends, he realized that was going to be more difficult than he originally thought. All their friends had come home for the ball.
"I can't believe they gave us that ridiculous moniker." Thomas shook his head.
"The press isn't always known for their intelligence." Liam said, fighting a smile.
"Thomanda." Amanda laughed just saying it. "It sounds like some weird foot fungus cream."
"The press have had five years to come up with anything better than that." Thomas wrapped his arm around his wife's shoulders. "They should have combined our last names. Brunt is more tolerable than Thomanda."
Maxwell rolled off the couch laughing. "We now have to come up with crazy couple names for all of us."
"We were given Riam." Riley replied. "Personally I prefer Liley, but Riam stuck."
"Naxwell or Madia." Amanda said between giggles while pointing at Maxwell and Nadia. "That's your couple name."
"Naxwell sounds like a snack cake or cookie." Riley added with a chuckle.
"We are sweet." Maxwell responded, cuddling Nadia close.
Hana sighed at seeing them all so happy together. "What would mine and Rashad's be?"
"Rashana?" Riley offered.
"Oh I like that so much better than what I thought." Amanda laughed. "I at first thought Hahad."
The group burst into laughter while more couple names were bandied about.
"So what do we dub Olivia and Ethan?" Liam asked.
"Ethalivia?" Hana offered.
"Olithan?" Maxwell added.
"Oooh! Olithan!" Riley exclaimed. "Sounds like a sea monster. Olivia will love it!"
Drake tried to ignore what was being said as he joined them.
Maxwell noticed his frown and immediately changed the subject.
"Hey," he said over the lingering chuckles. "What's everyone's resolutions going to be?"
"Get married." Rashad grinned at Hana.
"That's your plans for next week." Maxwell winked at them. "What are you going to resolve to do this new year?"
"Spend time with my husband." Hana replied with a slight blush.
"I think more time with our significant others is what we will all resolve to do." Liam added.
Drake bit back a bitter retort. At least they knew they would have their significant others. He was praying for a chance to talk to his.
********************
Olivia stood in front of the mirror one last time to check her reflection. It was strange to see the same old features once more in the all too familiar guest room when she felt so changed. Stepping off the plane and seeing Cordonia's capital didn't affect her like it once did. Somewhere, somehow, she had moved on past the pride of her title and country.
She still loved her home, but she now knew she was capable of so much more than merely being the Duchess of Lythikos. She wondered if the changes would be visible to anyone else. If no one noticed it, she at least had proved it to herself.
Her gaze left her reflection to focus on Ethan finishing dressing. Her lips curved at the red shirt he had pulled on with his black slacks.
She wondered if he knew he had chosen to wear her house colors.
He glanced up and noticed her staring.
"Is this the wrong thing to wear to dinner tonight?" He asked.
"No." She walked over to him.
Ethan paused in buttoning his shirt when she looped her arms around his neck.
"What made you choose this shirt?" She asked, threading her fingers in his hair.
His lips curved as they brushed her cheek. "Thomas told me about ways we men can show our support for our noble ladies." He tugged her closer. "I thought I should start out as I intend to for my fiancée."
Olivia cupped his cheek with her left hand, her eyes darting toward the sparkling proof that she was marrying the man that held her. Their lips met in a tender kiss that made her want to forget about joining anyone else and simply stay here alone with him.
"Shouldn't we hurry?" Ethan asked when she began to toy with the buttons of his shirt.
His hands moved along her back, searching for her zipper.
"We should." She pressed another kiss to his lips before easing back.
Her smile was warm as she admired him. "Red is a good color on you."
"As long as you approve." He finished buttoning his shirt.
Olivia handed him his tie he had set out earlier.
He looped it around her waist and used it to pull her close.
"Doctor?" She chided. "You have a king and queen waiting to welcome you."
"I think you know who I think deserves my attention." He leaned his forehead against hers. "Are we telling everyone tonight?"
"About our engagement?" Olivia asked.
Ethan nodded. "I want you to have all the excitement and whatever they do here to celebrate when a duchess gets engaged."
She rolled her eyes. "I don't need a ball, Ethan."
Her heart softened once more when he whispered he wanted to give her everything she deserved.
"We can tell them," her breath hitched when she felt his mouth against that special spot under her ear, "if you want to."
"I want to." He muttered against her skin. "I want everyone to know we are together." He lifted his head and smiled at her. "I want them to see how proud I am that you chose me to marry."
"Ethan." Her frown firmed. "Don't you dare make me emotional right now when I'm about to see everyone."
He chuckled as he let her go. "Very well, duchess. I'll behave."
She hmphed while returning to the mirror to retouch her lipstick.
Once they were both deemed presentable, they left their chambers and gathered Naveen to take downstairs.
****************
While the buzz of conversations filled the room, Drake escaped to the wet bar.
"Would you mind pouring me a glass of the Pinot Noir?" Regina asked, joining him.
"Yes mam."
She cleared her throat. "Sir Drake, I--"
"Just Drake, mam." He reminded her.
She smiled at his insistence she not use any honorific. "Drake, is something wrong?"
He handed her a wine glass. "No mam." He poured the wine for her. "Why do you ask?"
"You seem a touch distracted."
"I do?"
She chuckled. "Yes. Usually by this time you would have called a halt to all the talk of weddings and romantic, as you call it, nonsense."
A hint of a smile appeared on his face. "I guess I've been tuning them out tonight."
"I see." She patted his arm. "I'll leave you to your thoughts then."
He straightened up when Olivia stepped into the room, flanked by Ethan and the other doctor Drake had yet to meet.
The older of the two men had a friendly smile on his face that disappeared when he saw Regina.
"Gin?" Delight flooded his surprised facial expression. "Is it really you?"
Everyone looked back and forth between the Queen Mother and Naveen.
"Did he just call Regina, Gin?" Riley whispered.
"I've never heard anyone call her that." Liam whispered back.
Regina had her hand pressed to her heart. "Naveen! You're the Dr. Banerji Lady Olivia talked about?!"
Naveen met her in the middle of the room, his hands taking hers.
"What is going on?" Olivia whispered.
"I haven't got a clue." Ethan whispered back. "Naveen did a fellowship here when he was fresh out of medical school. Maybe, the two met during that time."
"It seems they did more than meet." Olivia pointed out.
"After all these years," Naveen said, "You are still just as beautiful as when we met."
Regina's blush and almost girlish laughter made everyone eager to hear more.
"We both know that is not true." Regina replied with an elegant wave of dismissal.
Naveen's smile grew when he felt her squeeze his hand.
Remembering their audience, the two let go of one another.
"You two know each other?" Riley asked, loving their flustered states.
"We met when I first came to Cordonia." Naveen explained. His gaze softened on the Queen Mother. "I didn't know my way around and had gotten horribly lost when a lovely young woman pulled up in a convertible and took pity on me."
"In a convertible, huh?" Maxwell was already imagining a young Regina with her blonde hair blowing in the breeze as she pulled over to help a young, handsome doctor. "Then what happened?"
Regina's blush grew. "I offered to drive him back to the house he had rented and one thing led to another and we--"
"I begged her to be my tour guide during my stay." Naveen explained to keep her from having to reveal too much. "It ended up being the best summer of my life."
She shook her head while smiling. "It was the last time I was ever able to be free to do and act as I wanted."
"What happened, mam, that changed all that?" Hana asked. "
"My first official social season began that fall. Adelaide was being courted by Godfrey and my parents insisted I do all I could to put our family in the best light possible so that an arrangement could be made between the two." A brief sadness passed over her. "Once that started, I was sent from one house party to the next then began a tour through Europe on diplomatic endeavors. Before I knew it, two years had gone by and Naveen had left Cordonia by the time I returned."
The older doctor grimaced. "I had been accepted to Edenbrook and was unable to find Gin to tell her."
Ethan quietly studied Naveen, wondering if this was why his mentor had never married.
"Well, now you two can catch up," Nadia encouraged. "Without worry of having to part."
Regina didn't bother to hide her happiness at that thought. "I would love that."
"So would I." Naveen added.
******************
Once all the introductions were made, the group fell into smaller ones to talk.
Keeping mostly to himself on the other side of the room, Drake couldn't take his eyes off Olivia. She seemed so different than the last time she had been in Cordonia. Not just in appearance, but there was something else there he couldn't quite identify.
She had left her hair down in loose curls. He couldn't recall when he had seen her do that here. He had once heard her say that her hair down could be used against her if an enemy were to attack.
She must have lost that worry.
Olivia almost appeared more approachable. Her smirk didn't hold the same bite it used to. She listened without too much sarcasm to the conversations going on around her.
She looks soft.
Drake took another gulp of his drink. Where had that thought come from? Olivia Nevarkis was many things, but soft? Impossible.
He noticed that Ethan remained close to her. The little touches going on between them irritated Drake. Ethan would occasionally touch her back when turning to say something to her. Olivia would respond in kind. He would brush a lock of hair over her shoulder. She would place her hand on his arm when pointing out something.
All innocent, yet all given with hidden meanings.
The smiles they shared. The heated glances. The--
A sparkle on Olivia's hand caught his attention.
No, it can't be--
"I have an announcement." Olivia raised her voice. "I wanted you all to be the first ones to know."
Drake felt his insides go numb as if his body knew the pain that was about to happen and wanted to try and spare him.
"Ethan asked me to marry him." Olivia looked up at her doctor. Her smile, so unlike any in Cordonia had seen, was tender and full of affection. "And I said, yes."
Everyone spoke at once their delight and rushed to hug and congratulate the couple.
All that is except Drake.
His empty glass slipped through his fingers and thudded softly on the floor.
Did she listen to my message? Did she decide to not give me a chance to apologize in person? Why would she choose him without first seeing what we could have?
Maxwell slipped away from the laughter and teasing of Team Olithan. Swiping up his friend's glass, he placed an arm along Drake's shoulders and led him back to the bar.
"She didn't give me a chance." He muttered to Maxwell. "I told her I wanted to try and she instead picks that doctor. She didn't bother to even say she didn't want me."
Maxwell poured him a strong one and handed it off. "I know." He sighed softly. "I'm sorry, Drake."
Drake downed the contents, poured another, then after it was gone he drank one more that was filled to the brim. "Don't be." He slammed the empty glass down. "If you have to feel sorry for anyone, feel it for Ramsey." He jerked his chin toward the couple. "He's the one stuck with her."
"Drake, I think you should still try to talk--"
"No thanks." Drake snapped. "What’s left to say?" He shrugged. "I dodged a bullet."
Maxwell gave up arguing. He didn't know what to do as Drake became angrier.
"Better go give my congratulations." He grumbled while making his way across the room.
"We'll announce your engagement at the ball." Liam told the couple. He pressed a kiss to Olivia's cheek and shook Ethan's hand. "May you both find the same happiness I found with Riley."
"I need details!" Riley exclaimed "When and where did this happen? How did you propose?"
Olivia chuckled. "Ethan asked me at his father's home when we went to spend Christmas there."
"How sweet!" Hana exclaimed. "We can start planning your wedding while we are all together."
Olivia's friends began to talk over one another to give possible opinions of wedding venues and dates for the ceremony.
Only Ethan noticed the tension forming in Olivia's body. He soon saw the reason for it approaching.
"Congratulations." Drake said.
"Thank you." Ethan answered when Olivia instinctively stepped closer to his side. "I'm still surprised she said yes." He smiled down at her.
"You shouldn't be." Olivia told him.
"Liv's right, Ramsey. You shouldn't be surprised. Give yourself another day or two and you'll see why." Drake drawled. "The only thing nobles aspire to around here is marriage."
"Drake." Liam admonished.
"What? Isn't that all that was thumped into your heads as children? Even Hana admitted to being trained from a little girl on up on how to catch a husband." He continued.
Hana's cheeks burned as she averted her eyes from everyone.
"Of course, Olivia wasn't so fortunate when it came to knowing how to catch a husband, was she?" Drake smirked at her. "Her mother died before she could begin the training. Guess it was a good thing she went ahead and married you off to a terrorist, huh?"
"That's enough." Ethan warned. "You're intoxicated and should go to your room and sleep it off."
"Is that your medical opinion, Doc?" Drake narrowed his eyes at him. "Or is it you're worried I'll say something to embarrass you and your --"
"Excuse us." Olivia wrapped her fingers around Drake's arm, making sure to dig her nails into the tender flesh under his arm. "Walker and I need to clear something up."
She yanked him towards a door that led out into a small courtyard.
He wrenched his arm from her once they reached a nearby fountain.
"What in the hell was that?" She snapped.
"What?" He taunted when she merely glared at him. "Couldn't take the truth, Libby? Or are you worried that your doc can't?"
"In there," she hissed, "is the man who actually defended you to me after our last fight."
"Did he?" Drake folded his arms. "How endearing."
"Ethan is the man I want." She stated. "Whether you can accept that or not is your problem. It is not going to be mine!" Her narrowed eyes held his own. "I personally don't know if you and I can be friends after everything that has happened. I was going to try and at least be pleasant around you, but your little act in there has made it impossible."
"Who cares?" He muttered. "You didn't care about how I would feel after I ripped my heart out and laid it at your feet just so that you could waltz back home with your new love."
"You already knew my choice!" She shouted. "You saw how much he meant to me in Boston. I told you there was nothing between me and you and yet you stand here and show the world once again what a jackass you are." Her breathing was accelerated as she tried to calm down. "This is why you and I never had a chance. There's too much resentment from years of the two of us fighting."
"There wouldn't be if you had given me a chance." He told her. "Some time to try and be what you wanted. Instead you accept the first marriage proposal you ever got."
"I ACCEPTED BECAUSE I AM IN LOVE WITH ETHAN!" She raised a trembling hand to her head, completely frustrated with his refusal to give up. "He makes me feel a way I never thought possible."
"I don't want to hear about your sex life." Drake snapped.
"I'm not talking about that!" She shoved Drake away from her. "I'm talking about how he makes me feel as if I am the most important person in the world. He actually respects me. Cares about my opinions--"
"Clearly a glutton for punishment." Drake drily remarked.
Olivia gave up trying to explain. Using moves she hadn't had to in her months away, she swept Drake's legs out from under him, sending him tumbling backwards into the water fountain.
His head shot up, coughing and sputtering water out of his mouth and nose. "What the hell was that?!"
"That is the end of this discussion." She stated in a monotone voice. "I'm marrying Ethan. I'm going to have my own happily ever after. I expect you to keep your distance from now on. We might share the same group of friends, but you and I are nothing." Her green eyes flashed a warning. "We aren't friends, acquaintances, or even enemies." She stepped away from him. "Because I respect my enemies, but you, I can't even find the energy to be disgusted with you right now."
"Olivia, wait--" he tried to get out of the fountain and chase after her. "I--"
She walked back inside and quietly shut the door, as if he hadn't been speaking at all.
*****************
The next few months flew by. Hana and Rashad's wedding was deemed the perfect way to start a new year. Cordonia's research hospital had it's ribbon cutting ceremony a week later with both the press and nobles exclaiming over the state of the art facility. Under Naveen, Ethan, and Olivia's management, patients were being treated by some of the best physicians from around the world.
Word soon spread and numerous medical journals did pieces on the findings and styles of treatments given there. In every interview, Ethan gave Olivia the credit for everything that they were accomplishing, reminding the world that it had been her idea in the first place to create such a hospital.
She didn't think she could love him more than she already did until he did that, once more helping heal her Nevarkis reputation. It had been a long time since she had wished for a knight in shining armor to come along and fight for her, and here he was, fighting along the battlefields of the press that she had always felt at a loss over.
While Olivia balanced her duchess duties and those at the hospital, she planned her wedding. Ethan, no matter how exhausted he was, would stay up late giving his opinion on the party size and location. The two became even closer to one another as they discussed their life together, the possibility of children, and the roles they were playing in both the medical society and the nobility.
They decided on an intimate ceremony in one of Lythikos's oldest chapels. Liam was to conduct it, with Olivia requesting Amanda as her matron of honor and a very pregnant Riley and Hana as bridesmaids. The two mothers' to be cried together over the sweetness of it all from the moment they were asked until Ethan kissed his bride.
Ethan asked Naveen to be his best man and Thomas as a groomsman. He and the director had only grown closer in friendship as the ladies they were committed to spent so much time together. Thomas was helping him learn how to balance his future duties of Duke of Lythikos along with his chosen career. He reassured him that he could indeed have it all and be content.
Needing one more groomsman, Ethan left that choice to Olivia. Maxwell volunteered, to help take the pressure off of her, and was soon fitted for a new tux.
Drake never received an invitation.
He had tried to apologize. He even cornered her before she left the palace for Lythikos and managed to sound sincere, but it was no use. She was done with having him in her life. There was no anger. No sadness. Nothing. Just like she had told him.
He knew it was his own fault. All of it was. Somehow he had ruined what could have ended up being the best thing in his life. Seeing how Olivia was in love and knowing it could have been him on the receiving end, it hurt worse than any insult she could ever give.
He should be happy he wasn't invited to the ceremony. It was a mercy, whether she meant it as such or not. Seeing her dressed as a bride and saying her vows to another man would have been beyond his ability to calmly accept.
So he did what anyone would do the day of their love's wedding to another.
He left Cordonia for America.
Drake decided he would stay away for an indefinite period of time. Liam had Riley by his side so he wouldn't feel guilty over abandoning him. All of their friends were happily settled with their significant others. He was finally free to see what his life could be without nobles and putting Liam first.
A few years went by. During this time, babies were born. Drake had sent handmade rocking horses to Hana and Riley when he received the news of their sons' births. He next was picking wedding gifts for Maxwell and Nadia and then, to his great shock, one to Regina and Naveen. More babies were born, including word of Olivia and Ethan having a daughter.
That text from Maxwell had left him feeling a loss be hadn't thought of.
Drake decided to test the waters and start dating again. He thought this would be a chance to see what he really wanted from a potential spouse. Nothing too serious ever came from these attempts, but they did help slowly ease his heartache.
He would get the occasional visit from those he had left back in Cordonia. Phone calls and texts were a normal, everyday occurrence. Then one day, Savannah found out she was pregnant again and asked him to come for a nice long visit to Ramsford.
The moment he stepped off the plane and caught the hint of apple blossoms in the air, he knew this would always be home. He closed his eyes and simply let the feeling wash over him that this was where he was meant to be, where he was always meant to be.
He decided to stop and see Liam and Riley on his way to Ramsford. The couple were with their children at Valtoria along with some of their other friends.
Including Olivia and Ethan.
When Drake stepped out of the car, he could hear the laughter and squeals of young children playing out back. He went down a gravel path lined with lilies, only stopping at the sight before him.
Children, five years old and under, were chasing each other all over an area that would put most playgrounds to shame. Slides, climbing walls, bridges, jungle gyms, everything a child could want covered two acres of land.
He was able to identify most of the children without much thought. He had received tons of pictures through Christmas cards and texts, but he didn't need them to know who belonged to whom.
Liam's two sons with their golden hair shining in the sunlight were easily picked out. The little princes were soon joined by a boy that could only belong to Hana.
He then noticed two little girls that looked exactly like their mothers once had so many years ago. The dark haired one was clearly Thomas and Amanda's. And just like her mother had done at her age, the little girl was playing with another who had the richest set of red hair Drake had ever seen.
The three year old looked like she had been fashioned in Olivia's very image. Even her green eyes could narrow in an all too familiar irritation when the boys' rough housing got too close to where she was playing.
And just like her mother, her smile blossomed when she saw her father walking over.
Ethan leaned down to pick her up. His own smile was bright as he spoke to his daughter.
Whatever was said had the little girl eagerly nodding her agreement.
"Drake?"
He turned to see Olivia staring at him in surprise.
"Hey, Liv." He greeted.
"What are you doing here?"
"Savannah asked me to come for a visit." He explained.
"Ah." She placed her hand on her baby bump when another kick happened. "How have you been?"
"Good." He motioned toward her belly. "Boy or girl?"
"We don't know." She smiled down at her stomach. "Just like with Erin, Ethan and I decided we want to be surprised."
"Congratulations." He said sincerely. "I know you always wanted a family." He looked back toward where her little girl was. "Looks like you and Ethan know what you're doing."
"I think we do." She finally smiled at him.
"I'm happy for you." He managed to say and realized that it was true. If he couldn't be the one she ended up with, at least she had gotten what she wanted most out of life.
"Thank you." She stepped around him and continued toward the play area.
Ethan had been watching for her and began to make his way over to help her down the slope safely. She paused, knowing he would only worry if she tried to go down it on her own.
"Drake?"
"Yes, Olivia?"
"It's good to see you again." She smiled once more at him then went on and took her husband's arm.
Drake watched as Ethan tenderly brushed a kiss to her temple. The two laughed at their daughter having had enough of the boys' antics and chasing after them to give them a piece of of her mind.
As he stood there alone, he realized that though there was a faint echo of what could have been, he was finally able to watch them without it hurting.

Most interesting people you have met here?
“I find most people interesting in one way or another, so a full list would be rather long. Though to be fair, I’ve chatted with more of them online than I’ve actually met. But from those particular interactions I can say that Dr. Kavanagh is near the top of the list. Then there’s an artist with a love for horror, and that chap that claims he was buried alive.
“The ones I have met in person that stick out are Arthur Drake, Nadia, Beatrice, Nell, Hideki... and a young man called Adam.”

Gotta Gogh [Part 4: Paris Fucking France]
Pairing: Nadia x Maxwell
Words: 4,320
Tags: Canon Divergence, Crossovers, Curse words probably, The Riot Club!AU not really anymore lol
A/N: Well, hello again. It’s been like 2 months since I last updated? Sorry 😥 This is part 4/5! It’s almost over y’all lmao
“-nous approchons maintenant de l'aéroport de Paris le Bourget…où l'heure locale est 11:00.”
Maxwell rubs his eyes, taking out one earbud that blasted pop music in his ears. He hasn’t visited Paris in ages.
Nadia has a blanket wrapped around her shoulders, her hair a nest. She stares slack-jawed outside her window, making Maxwell smile. It wasn’t like him to go to such lengths for a girl. Yet he was clueless on what to do about it. All he thought about these days was Nadia. Nadia, whose face is slightly illuminated by the city lights beneath as the plane gets closer. She jumps when the tires touch the tarmac. The small jet shakes as it speeds through the runway of the private airport – eventually slowing down to taxi. The cabin lights flicker back on and he winces at the sudden brightness.
“You okay? Are you hungr-“
“Hungry.” She turns to him, expression still in slight disbelief.
“Of course.” He laughs.
The air is heavy with cold recycled air and the scent of clean, dry pine. An attendant pours Evian into glasses as the other staff efficiently follow deplaning protocol. “Here you go,” She says in accented English. “The car will arrive in a moment sir. We’re sorry for the delay, it should have been waiting for you.”
Nadia’s eyebrows shoot up – amused – and takes one glass on the tray. Maxwell thanks the attendant, a little embarrassed.
“You will need a jacket.” The attendant advises when the plane’s doors are opened. Nadia sighs and looks at Maxwell. “Fine. And I’m going to pay you back for it.”
“Whatever helps you sleep at night.” Maxwell winks and barely dodges a pillow that Nadia throws in his direction. “It’s a little late to get dinner right here, but I’m sure we have food at uh-“ He clears his throat. “home.”
“Home? Where are we staying again?”
“Sir, the car is here.”
Maxwell gets up from his seat and stretches as much as he could inside the jet. “My mom’s old house. Unless you want to go to a hostel… sleep next to some strangers…?”
“Hostels have individual beds!” Nadia huffs, folding her blanket as she gets up but gives up on it halfway. She shoots the attendant an apologetic look. I will take care of it, she smiles. Friendly, understanding. “Plus, how else can you make new friends?”
Maxwell nods. “Right, right. Like us?”
Nadia laughs. “Yeah?” He lets her pass through first. The stewardess hands her a thick, fur-lined suede jacket before they get out. She looks a little confused when the stewardess helps her put it on but goes with it.
Once settled in the heated car, their fingers and the tips of their noses thaw from the cold. Nadia looks out the window in awe. Even Maxwell admits, seeing Paris at night is still a shock to the system. The air was different, roads more crowded with tourists. In a way it was a beautiful chaos compared to Cordonia.
“I still can’t- am I actually here? In Paris-fucking-France?” Nadia tears her gaze away from the view.
“Paris-fucking-France indeed. I missed this place.” Maxwell looks outside as the car passes a huge open plaza flanked by three old buildings – the middle one being the biggest and most imposing. “Look, l’École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. National School of Fine Arts.”
Nadia nods, recognizing the name. “Degas, Monet, Renoir, Fragonard… shit, can we go?!”
“Sure.” Maxwell laughs. “We’re almost here though. It’s tucked away in a street here, near that church.”
The car avoids a couple of tourists, swerving down a private road. Rows of townhomes line each side, accented with vintage cars and a scatter of leaves. Just ahead, his mother’s home situated near the end of the line. Almost 10,000 square feet of land, three-floors, and light spilling warmth out the windows. With Bertrand being the older son – and the default heir of almost everything in Ramsford – the will stated that Maxwell get everything from his mother’s side, including this house. Legally, it was his house now. This huge, late 17th century heritage, passed on in a straight line in his mother’s side.
Maxwell helps Nadia out of the car. He knocks the gold door knocker before feeling a little weird. This was his. He pushes the door open and a blond form hurtles itself from the foyer, engulfing him in a warm hug.
“Ines!” He hugs her back, smiling into her hair. He falters momentarily when she steps back and holds him at arm’s length. His mom would’ve been Ines’ age today. He remembers, Ines being his mother’s closest friend and confidante. She never laughed as hard as she had with Ines as they took tea during afternoons – Bertrand and Maxwell playing but mostly fighting – in the gardens. Ines looks more or less the same, albeit having more lines settling in her skin. She still had her perpetually pink cheeks and her friendly brown eyes.
“C’est qui, ca?”
“C’est Nadia,” Maxwell silently wishes his mother would peek from the parlour, tease him about finally bringing a girl home.
“Nice to meet you!” Nadia smiles, unsure what to do next.
“Ohhh, how pretty!” Ines envelops her in a tight hug. Nadia returns her hug eagerly. “Are you hungry? Tu aimes bien les pâtes?”
Maxwell mouths pasta? at her and she nods. “Pasta sounds good.”
“So, this is your mom’s house?” Nadia asks when Ines quickly disappears into the kitchen. It is more like an art gallery than a home. Instead of flowers, the foyer’s centerpiece was a sculpture of a head. The walls are white Rococo panels – intricate leaves and shell mouldings. It wouldn’t surprise anyone if it turns out that those Monets and Manets on the walls are real. The living room was tastefully furnished with actual canape settees balanced with more modern pieces. “It’s beautiful.”
“She loves this place,” More so than the Ramsford Estate, more than any other property of theirs. “She loves art too, you know? She would’ve liked you.” Maxwell tries to smile as he takes it all in. He sinks down on a couch, feeling all of a sudden tired but so wide awake.
“Well, she has amazing taste.” Nadia nods in approval as she surveys the room. “Oh my god… Is this you?!”
Nadia holds up a gold frame, a picture of 11-year old Maxwell in his Halloween costume – a chubby little superman. Beside him, she recognizes Liam and Olivia – dressed as Harry Potter and a dragon, respectively. In the corner, a white blur.
“Don’t look at that!” Maxwell snatches the frame as Nadia laughs.
“You were so adorable! I didn’t know you guys celebrated Halloween in Cordonia.” She peeks over his shoulder, trying to get a look at the picture again. “What’s that white thing?”
Maxwell snorts. “Drake. He dressed up as a ‘ghost’, apparently. He didn’t even want to be in the picture.”
He remembers that night. It was mostly Drake’s idea to get more candy from the palace kitchens. He brought it up, and Liam made it happen.
“We have an equivalent holiday to uh, remember.” Maxwell distracts himself by rubbing the smudges on the glass with his sleeve, then sets it back down on the side table. “Honestly? The American way is a lot better.”
Nadia grins. “Kai and I make costumes together so we’re coordinating. Every. Single. Year.”
“Attend any parties?”
“No.” Nadia sighs. “I miss her though, I can’t believe we have to break tradition this year.”
Maxwell pouts. “When are you seeing her again?”
“In two months… when I go back.” Nadia smiles bitterly.
“You leave in two months?!” Maxwell sits up in alarm. Oh, shit.
“Yeah. The semester ends in two months, duh!”
“Noooo!” He throws himself back dramatically on the couch.
“What do you mean ‘Noooo’?” Nadia laughs. “So um, don’t you have a brother? Is he here?”
“Way to change the subject, Nadia.” Maxwell frowns, his eyes trailing to his and Bertrand’s picture above a small fireplace. “Bertrand? He’s back in Ramsford probably tearing his hair out with…responsibilities.”
After a very late dinner, Ines fixes up a room for Nadia. Maxwell is back in his old room, wearing matching sweats that faintly smells like lavender (thanks to Ines). This room is the smallest one he has, and yet it was his favorite. His old drawings stacked neatly in a drawer, his old camera that probably doesn’t work anymore, an old love letter to the first girl he liked, pictures of his friends. A picture of his mom.
“Max?”
A muffled voice calls.
“…mom?”
“Uh, no?” Nadia gently opens the door. She is wearing the pajamas Ines provided, her black hair down. Maxwell tears his eyes away, blushing. Thank god it’s too dark for her to see. He can never get used to just how beautiful she was.
“Can’t wait until tomorrow, huh?” Maxwell stands up from the bed, walking over to her standing underneath the threshold. “I can’t sleep either.” He braces himself on the open door with one arm. Nadia gives him a weird look.
“What are you doing? Mr. GQ?” She teases, and after a second they both burst into laughter. “I mean… yeah, it’s only midnight. Are you tired?”
“I’d like nothing more than to get out of here,” He looks around. “Maybe come back when we’re ready to pass out or something.”
Nadia frowns in concern. “What’s the matter?”
He gestures wildly around him.
“Tell me, then?” She crosses the threshold and plops on the bed, bouncing a couple of times, then looks at him expectantly.
“Are you trying to get me to open up?” Maxwell laughs, shaking his head. “Come on, I’ll get a car ready.”
“Fine.” Nadia shrugs. “Can we walk though?”
“Sure.”
“Are you sure you’re not cold like that?”
Nadia prances around the street in her pajamas and the suede jacket from earlier. “I’m too happy to feel cold!” She spins ungracefully, grinning widely.
“You’re… really something.” Maxwell’s lips tug into a smile, his heart speeding up when she meets his eyes. “Where do you wanna go?”
“I was thinking – we could hit the museums tomorrow, but tonight we get a proper drink. I’m 19 and I cAN GET WASTED IN FRANCE!” She yells into the sky.
“Drinks with the little umbrellas?” Maxwell suggests.
“Drinks with the little umbrellas, nothing less.”
Nadia skips lightly as she walks, like a child trying not to scream, gasping as they turn to an old narrow street. The starlight seemed to glow in sync with the buildings, reflections bouncing off of the still slick trees. The lungs of Paris breathes life through the city from the cracks of aged brick and the shimmer of light dancing on the puddles’ surface – and Nadia was in awe. The rush of cheerful passersby, the bustle at night in all of its glory – overwhelming and yet somehow as comforting as home. It seemed to lift her spirit among the trees, sights, and sound pulsing through her veins.
“Does it live up to expectations so far?” Maxwell asks, stepping beside her.
“So far? It’s more than I ever- ugh, it’s so much better.” Nadia squeals. “It’s amazing.”
“It is,” Maxwell agrees, looking at her.
They wander through the streets, Nadia’s unconventional get-up getting a few looks. They pass numerous patisseries, most of them closed. Nadia stops in front of a nondescript black French door with the lights still on.
“Oh man, those look good.” She bites her lip, scanning the store through the small openings. “Do you think they would mind-?”
“We’ll be in and out of their hair in like, two minutes.” He walks up to the door and holds it open for Nadia.
“You like these hole-in-the-wall places huh?” Nadia walks in, appreciating the rich décor and antique paintings randomly hung on the walls.
“I’ve grown to love them.”
Nadia blushes but busies herself with the options displayed on the glass casing.
“I think they’re actually about to close…” Maxwell looks at the cashier awkwardly. He simply shrugs at Maxwell, as if to say, well, are you gonna buy anything?
“Right,” Nadia’s eyebrows knit together, looking for something, then quickly giving up. “You pick I can’t handle being time pressured!”
Maxwell laughs, nodding. “Okay, uh, Je voudrais des éclairs au chocolat et, euh… des macarons, s’il vous plait.”
“À emporter?” The cashier rolls his eyes.
“Oui, pardon.”
He quickly arranges the macarons by color inside a box and a few eclairs in another. They were outside in a flash. Maxwell gets a deep pink macaron as they walk – raspberry chocolate, his favorite. He notices Nadia looking queasy as she bites into a bright yellow one.
“Not good?”
“Maxwell,” Nadia looks up at him. “Why take me here? Seriously?”
“Because… I can?”
“That’s a cop-out answer,” She frowns. “I mean, you’ve spent so much… that private plane, this freaking jacket… this!” She holds up the half-moon shaped macaron.
“Nadia, if you think I’m doing this to get something in return – you’re so wrong. Like, more wrong than the person who invented math.”
“Huh?” Nadia laughs.
“God, I- remind me again why we didn’t get drinks FIRST THING?”
Nadia widens her eyes innocently.
“I guess I really like you?”
“…you guess?” Nadia tries not to smile.
“Yeah. When we were in that hallway in the palace… I guess I realized I would literally do anything and everything to see you happy…if you let me.”
“You’re so-“
“Cheesy.”
“Cute. But also…cheesy. Made me cringe a bit.”
Maxwell gasps. “I TAKE IT ALL BACK!”
Nadia bursts into laughter as she links her arm with his. His nerves go into haywire when she does.
“…wait… you said I was cute?” He looks at her.
“Nope. I’m just here for your money. I don’t think you’re cute at all!” Nadia finishes her macaron, finally looking more peaceful. “Mm, mango!”
“I think I need that drink now.” He cringes, realizing that he sounded just like Drake.
Stuffed with macarons and eclairs (Maxwell discovered that Nadia ALWAYS had room for dessert), they eventually find a rooftop bar packed with tourists and locals alike. The moonlight shone on the slightly damp stone, the cloudless sky stretching above the city. Obscure French indie music blast from the speakers, but surprisingly not loud enough to make anyone deaf within a mile radius.
“We’re going to die, are we?” Maxwell stares at the drinks Nadia brings back from the bar, balancing a tray of two oversized snifters with electric green liquid, white smoke swirling at the top, and packed with different kinds of candy as “garnish”. She sets them down on their narrow round bar table, looking satisfied.
“They didn’t have the colorful umbrellas, unfortunately.” She excitedly takes her glass and sips the straw. “Cold!!”
Maxwell decides, fuck it, and takes a sip on his own. His eyes widen at the refreshing citrusy flavor. “Shit, that’s good! I don’t even know what it is?”
“Better than your Pineapple Paradise Punch?” Nadia grins.
Maxwell touches his heart. “You remembered?” She rolls his eyes at him. “Almost, but no.”
Nadia raises her heavy glass with both hands. “To Paris?”
“To Paris-fucking-France.” Maxwell does the same, clinking his glass with hers.
Suddenly, a surprise English song plays. There's a spanner in the works, you know, You gotta step up your game to make it to the top…
“I love this song!” Nadia gasps. “Got a little competition now, you're gonna find it hard to cope, livin' on your own, ooh, ooh-” She sings, off-key and so off-beat. She uses one of the lollipops the drink came with as a microphone. The cold wind rustles through her hair but she doesn’t seem to mind as she sings, and then the realization hits Maxwell like an arrow shot through him. His breath catches, like his heart just burst. I’m in trouble.
“Let's get this started, girl, we're movin' up, we're movin' up, it's been a lot to change, but youuuu…will always get what you want.” Maxwell sings along with her, and her eyes widen in surprise when she hears him.
“You know this song?!”
“It’s so bad! Of course I do.” So much trouble. He knew for a while. It was as if he touched a rippling pool, calming the waters with his hand – turning everything crystal clear. Maxwell takes an especially big gulp of his drink. The song ends, just as quickly as it started.
“So what makes Paris so special?” Maxwell looks out on the view, answering his own question. Lights glittered all throughout the cityscape, the Eiffel Tower in the distance. The silver of the moonlight shines subtly in the cloudless dark blanket of a sky.
Nadia smiles. “I guess it’s obvious why. The art scene, mostly.” She sighs dreamily. “But the culture too, the vibe – I feel like I’m transported to another time, you know what I mean? It’s a beautiful thing.”
“Ever painted it?”
Nadia snorts. “I have a whole collection centered on it. It’s the stuff of my dreams.”
“You dream about Paris?”
“Yeah.” She nods. “So um, can we circle back to that conversation earlier?”
Maxwell could feel his heart drop to his stomach. “I don’t know what you’re talking about…?”
“You liking me, me going away…” Nadia’s eyes are down, focused on the green liquor they both don’t know the name of.
“You liking me back…?” Maxwell tries to joke.
She looks up at him, “Me telling you we should be just friends.”
Maxwell doesn’t know what it is. Maybe the fact that he’s finished his drink half-way, maybe it’s because she’s going away in 2 months, maybe it’s Paris. Maybe it’s the way Nadia looks at him that makes what she just said a complete and obvious lie. But something fills him a burst of confidence. “So I can’t think about kissing you?”
“Friends… don’t do that, do they?” Nadia palms her face, trying to hide her smile. “God, I can’t look at you right now.”
“Don’t be weird, Nadia.” Maxwell laughs.
Nadia huffs. “Just promise me one thing, for when I go back to New York.”
“Fine. What?”
“You’ll continue being you. The Maxwell who is always laughing, dancing, joking around…”
“Well that’s depressing.” Maxwell groans. “Okay. Only if you also promise me,”
Nadia looks up at him.
“That…” He leans in, eyes flitting down to her lips. “….you’ll acknowledge me as the Dancing King, superior to all.” His voice is silent, barely a whisper.
Nadia’s cheeks are pink, she smacks him on the shoulder and looks away. “You’re… you’re-“
“The best? Thank you.”
“The worst.” Nadia laughs. “I bet you drove Ines crazy growing up.”
Maxwell chews on his bottom lip. “I do though,” He can’t help but smile at the memories coming back to him. “Although I haven’t really visited ever since Bertrand and I lost our parents.”
Nadia reaches over the bar table to squeeze his hand. “….I’m sorry.”
“Thank you, Nadia. I mean it.” Maxwell meets her eyes. “Don’t worry about me though,”
“Is this why you wanted to get out of the house?” Nadia asks quietly.
“Am I that obvious?” Maxwell raises an eyebrow at her, trying to lighten the mood. To his relief, she catches on quick.
“I don’t know if you noticed, but I’m actually an android who can read minds.” Nadia deadpans, and then suddenly she lights up – like she just realized something. “You know what? You should do something – to remember them.”
He narrows his eyes. “What are you thinking?”
Nadia’s gaze is fixed on a guy behind Maxwell, every exposed inch of his skin covered in tattoos. Including his face. She looks at Maxwell again. “You don’t think-?”
“YES. I’M DOING IT.”
-
Nadia fruitlessly fans Maxwell’s face with her hand inside the hot studio, he nods after the not-so-calming words she keeps repeating – he couldn’t really hear anything. It was just him and that shiny, sharp needle. She’s even more worried than him. She stops trying to comfort him and slumps against a wall just as the tattoo artist comes with gloved hands and sterilized tools.
“You don’t get to blame me if this backfires.” Nadia warns. “Oh my god.”
“What?” Maxwell breaks his staring contest with the sharp tools.
“I’m so distracted by your twenty abs.”
“Twenty-? You’re not helping, perv!” Maxwell throws his sweatshirt at Nadia, which she catches before it hits her in the face. The artist grumbles in French for him to steady as he traces the stencil.
“Oh shit oh shit-“ Maxwell closes his eyes when his needle buzzes to life, ready to permanently ink him. He breathes deeply as the vibrating needle touches his skin, feeling as if it’s touching his bone. After a while it feels slightly numb, and before he knows it the sensation was gone. He opens his eyes and the first thing he sees is Nadia’s worried face, looking at his new tattoo.
“Is it bad?” He finally lets out the breath he’s been holding.
“No! It’s… it’s something.”
He listens to the guy’s instructions for aftercare, knowing full well that he’s going to forget the very next day.
Once outside, Nadia finally speaks. “I can’t believe you just- you did that!”
“I did it!” Maxwell grins, feeling exhilarated.
Coming back to his mom’s house felt different with the tattoo. The lights were off, Ines and the other staff sound asleep. The only sounds were the wind rustling through the greenery and the silent sloshing of water in the deep mosaic pool.
“Nadia,” Maxwell looks at her. They were sitting on a carved stone bench next to the pool. Steam rises from the water’s surface, its lighting casting a blue green aura around the garden. “Thank you.”
“For what?”
“I feel so much closer to her,” Maxwell confesses. “It’s like… I don’t have to dread leaving this house every time anymore?”
Nadia nods, looking up at him.
“It’s not as heavy of a feeling, because I have her with me.” Maxwell laughs and shakes his head. “It’s silly.”
“It’s not silly.” Nadia stands up and crouches next to the pool. “This is beautiful. Was it her idea?”
“You know it.” Maxwell stands beside her, their blurry shadows bouncing off the water, beneath it a symmetrical swirling pattern and subtly peacock feather-like shapes formed by thousands of little tiles. Their father complained that it made the garden look too ostentatious, but it was one of a kind. Maxwell smirks at Nadia, getting an idea. “Wanna get a closer look? It’s heated.”
“What? Maxwell no-“
Maxwell backtracks a few steps then runs forward. He jumps high, fully clothed with his shoes on, then lands with a huge splash. He shakes his wet hair out of his face when he surfaces then laughs at Nadia’s shell-shocked expression.
“Come on!”
“Fuck it.” Nadia stands up and ungracefully swan-dives into the pool. She surfaces, laughing. “You’re crazy.”
“And you’re crazy enough to jump with me!” Maxwell sticks his tongue out and splashes Nadia, a huge wave of water hitting her face.
“You’re gonna pay for that!” But before Nadia could splash him, she freezes.
“What?”
“Your tattoo! You can’t be swimming!”
“Shit!”
They both scramble to get out of the pool. The night air chills their soaked skin and heavy clothes, so they run back to the house – the sound of their laughter rising among the squeaking of their shoes.
“Ines is going to kill me.” Maxwell whispers before he opens the back door. Nadia wrings out the corner of her top before she enters.
“My jacket is ruined.” She frowns.
-
Maxwell stares up on the underside of his canopy. As a child his mother hung a mobile of shells on it – he doesn’t know where it is, probably a in a dusty box in the attic. But the room doesn’t feel as empty as it did a few hours ago. Maxwell sighs, maybe it’s just the light sting on his chest. He feels it over his shirt. A little hippo. He turns to his side, feeling a little uncomfortable with his still wet, but not dripping, hair. Nadia comes out of the en-suite with her hair up in a towel. Maxwell lent her his clothes, his t-shirt and shorts looking extra-large on her frame. She collapses beside him on the bed.
“My feet feel like jelly.” She whispers.
Maxwell is still reeling from their little adventure – not to mention all the sugar they consumed. “…Same.”
Nadia hiccups, breaking the silence, and Maxwell laughs, his stomach hurting. “Ow… that was cute.”
“Your hair is cute.” Nadia sits up, trying to insult him.
“What?” Maxwell follows her, unconsciously feeling his hair.
Nadia looks at him, her expression softening. “Huh, it actually looks cute. You can tie it up in little poofs.”
“We really need to sleep.” Maxwell locks eyes with Nadia, suddenly aware of how close their faces are.
Nadia nods. “Yeah…”
Maxwell doesn’t move, and neither does she. He leans in, his hand cupping her cheek. He doesn’t ask, instead his eyes search hers. He is breathless, the sound of his heart beating so loudly he’s convinced she could hear it. Before Maxwell could pull away because this is a bad, bad idea, Nadia closes her eyes and presses her lips to his. His eyes widen in shock at first, slowly closing when it felt like his brain would melt. He kisses her back, his hand drifting on the back of her neck to pull her closer. Nadia smiles against his kiss, and he hesitantly pulls away – forehead touching hers.
“Good night.” Nadia kisses him again, quick and soft, before standing up and making her way to the door, back to her own room.
Once the door clicks shut, Maxwell throws himself back on the bed with a groan, covering his flushed face with both hands.
How is he supposed to sleep after that?

FUN FACTS that I made up all in my head so don’t take it too seriously
Did Kiara write this chapter?
-        First of all, the French parts were google translated so please pleASE LET ME LIVE. (It also included an amount of research on How Not to Sound Like An Idiot – which was fun.)
-        Second, idk either HAHA but the Beaumont name sounds super French to me so I hc that they have some of that blood in them and they have very strong ties to it despite being an old and established family in Cordonia. So like, let’s say Maxwell and Bertrand grew up speaking French before Cordonian and English, since it was first taught to them at home.
-        Third, I just wanted to be cute. (I also have no consistency).
Their song:
-        The song Nadia sings at the bar is supposed to be Stay by Zedd and Alessia Cara, and then I realized… the story is set in 2011. So I had to scour my playlist for a song that doesn’t break the rules of time and space. Bam, Something Good Can Work by Two Door Cinema Club. It helps if you listen to it while reading that part 😉

Hey D!! 1/14/25 for the end of the year thingamajig ☺️
1 favorite fic you wrote this year
It’s a toss up between The Sweetest Christmas Gift and Stand to the Right, trying to find a balance between sadness, humor, and hope, because they were both challenging to write in their own way.
Thanksgiving Melee for the complete and utter crack that it was 😂
14 a fic you didn’t expect to write
Answered previously but tl;dr - everything!
25 a fic you read this year you would recommend everyone read
OH MAN GET READY. Pardon while I start creeping everyone’s Master Lists…
@likethetailofacomet - MASTER LIST
Cross Space and Time for one of the Endless Summer endings we all deserved to have, with a crossover from Hero - y’all get the luxury of binging this masterpiece instead of screaming internally (sometimes externally) several days in a row at your laptop while that ASSHAT VAANU ducks everything up.
The End Is Here - Zombie Endless Summer AU. more screaming. and crying. and anxiety. heyyy it’s just like being in the zombie wasteland minus being covered in blood and guts and dirt!
Crazy Train Applewood Express Assassination Station Learning to Love Again for ALL the Drake feels, complete with #DrakeRage #DrakeLove and heebie jeebies from Alex, the creeeeeepiest muthaforker around
@ooo-barff-ooo - MASTER LIST
Girl Crush - what started it all. Endless Summer AU with a twist
Endless Winter - read this current series AFTER Girl Crush
JUST KIDS - TRR College AU with Drake Walker x Joanna Malone I love them I love them I love them
Moments Beyond (TRR) with adult Drake x Joanna, especially Apples and Trees and other things
Time Well Spent - word of warning, you gon’ CRY.
@drakewalkerwhipped - AUTUMN FRIGGIN BLUES. It’ll gut you, make your blood boil, and you’ll want to pull your hair out. BUT YOU WILL LOVE IT AND ASK FOR MORE PAIN.
@blackcatkita - The Consequences of Secrets Part One starts here - this is most likely the fic that brought me to tumblr once Book 3 ended and I was desperate to keep the story alive. I went in search of fanfic online, and Jen’s series had me HOOKED as soon as I started reading.
@katurrade - Secrets and Sins, a modern, non-canon take on TRR where Liam is a mob king of New York. Also If Only You Knew, another non-canon TRR AU currently driving me crazy because Liam and MC/Reader can’t just TELL EACH OTHER HOW THEY FEEL (luv ya Kaytee!) but umm…Liam and Drake. BrOTP COPS. ‘nuff said.
@brightpinkpeppercorn - Twenty Questions for some sexy NSFW time with Jake McKenzie, and Happier mini-series for Jake x MC
@mind-reader1 Queen of Hearts series. MC loves Drake but she’s got to marry Liam. What happens now?
@sleepwalkingelite See You In Another Life series - I’m guilty of falling behind this gem but I have 40+ pages printed out (front and back!) to catch up over the holiday. A little role reversal with Drake and Liam, and MC has to roll with the punches of being at court.
@thecordoniandiaries - Better With You series (in progress) - an AU where Liam’s still mostly Liam and he meets MC while looking after his niece and nephew
@europeanguy - Gotta Gogh - TRR x Perfect Match AU, where Nadia is in Cordonia and encounters younger versions of the TRR gang.
I probably have more but uhh…holy crap this list is long, haha. I LIKE TO READ OKAY.

Six Sentence Sunday
Tumblr media
I'm behind on so much due to life in general, LOL. But to show that I am working on things here is a sneak peek into the next parts of Delicate (which this should be the last chapter of this short series), And Then I Left You, and a few drabbles I have in my WIP folder.

Delicate
This might be the first ball in the history of Drake's years in Cordonia to actually cause a certain excitement. He usually put up with the pomp and traditions to simply be with those he cared about. For years it was to support Liam, then going meant he could hang out with Riley, Hana, and Maxwell.
And then there were his activities in secret for a year with Olivia.
"We now have to come up with crazy couple names for all of us!"
"We were given Riam." Riley replied. "Personally I prefer Liley, but Riam stuck."
"Naxwell or Madia." Amanda said between giggles while pointing at Maxwell and Nadia. "That's your possible couple's name."

And Then I Left You
Thomas had worried that first day how they would handle the hotel situations he believed they were bound to encounter. He had gotten used to Olivia's secret passageways allowing him to see Amanda whenever he wanted.
He should have known that the intelligent lady he adored had already solved that problem.
Pulling onto a gravel road, she drove him toward a cottage that sat alone in a rolling meadow dotted here and there with trees. The two-story, thatched roof building sat amidst large Cordonian oak trees. Roses twined around a drain pipe while wisteria grew in wild abandon adding even more beauty to the rough stone walls.
"I know we could stay somewhere different with each place we visit," Amanda explained. "But then I thought we could stay our entire time somewhere in the middle of it all. It will mean more driving each day, but we will have nothing but privacy here."
Thomas stepped out and followed her inside. The cottage was just as charming on the inside as it was on the outside. Much of the furniture was designed strictly for comfort and a few for whimsy. The wooden floors creaked with each step as he explored the different rooms.
Upstairs, there were two bedrooms directly across from one another with a bathroom dividing them.
His lips curved at knowing he wouldn't have to find a way to sneak around and see her whenever they weren't out in public.
"What do you think?" She asked, a bit nervous from his silence.
"It's charming." He set his arms around her waist. "And perfect for our needs."

This next sneak peek is a second part to the Liam angst I posted earlier 😬 So sorry how dark that went. Since many wanted to see how Liam is after losing Riley, Drake and Maxwell, here is some of how it is going for him. Let’s just say it isn’t easy and will take some special persuasion from those left behind to help him.
Liam ignored all of it. He went to his chambers and remained secluded from the world for days. He refused entry to anyone who knocked. He simply sat there staring at the few mementos he had of those he had lost.
He flipped through the photographs Maxwell had insisted on taking of the three of them through the years. He paused at the few his mother was in, wishing she was here now to tell him how to move on from something like this. She had encouraged his friendships with Maxwell and Drake, knowing he would need them to face life in the public eye.
And now he would never have them again.
Setting the old album aside, he reached for the key chain Riley had given him the night of the Coronation. Thinking of that night and their confessions of love only to be cruelly parted...his head dropped as he carefully set it back on the table. Next he picked up the pearl he had given her. The plans and hopes they had while meeting in secret. It had helped him through every moment he was kept from her side.
He then lifted the photograph Anna had taken of them for their engagement. Liam's fingers trembled as they brushed against the image of Riley. Her smile so warm. Her eyes so filled with joy.
Reaching for a decanter, he attempted to metaphorically drown his sorrows. In one night he had lost everything he had held dear. How was he to go on from this? There was no enemy to slay, no way to find those he loved and rescue them. Nothing. Nothing except funerals to attend. Nothing but giving them to the cold, unforgiving dirt.
All he had ahead of him was visits to graveyards. He knew his father didn't have much longer to live. It would be just one more loss in his already devastated heart.
Death was what his life had become. He had feared that when his mother was poisoned. Many a night he would wake up crying at the thought of being completely and utterly alone. This long forgotten fear rose up within him, showing that it hadn't been a mere nightmare. It had been a premonition.
Dropping his head in his hands, he sobbed into the void that had become his only companion.

This next peek is a miniseries idea that will be called, Mixed Signals, that hit after that last Open Heart Chapter. It will focus on my MC Chris getting closer to Tobias (and gah, I am wishing now she could dump all the LI's and be with him. His humor and confidence have won me completely over). It will take place in both books 2 and 3 and focus on her frustration with Ethan and Bryce never committing or saying how they truly feel about her. Since, especially in the chapters before the Hawaii trip, they both would randomly act romantic towards her then friend zone her in the next scene, I'm letting this series show her choosing to step back and see what she wants and needs from a significant other. This begins after the attack and Chris has yet to return to work. She goes to Mass Kenmore to thank Tobias for coming to help find a cure for her and ends up opening up to him a bit.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Tobias asked softly, gently squeezing her close.
"Not really." Chris admitted. "Everyone keeps telling me to give myself time and all." She eased back. "I wish they would leave me alone."
He kept his hands on her waist while studying her. "Then tell them."
"Ha. You've met them." She snorted. "They don't take orders like that well."
"True." He replied. "You want me to do it?" His smirk brought a grin to her face. "Ethan already considers me a pain in his ass. What's one more mark against me?"
She laughed, while dabbing at her eyes and nose. "After what you did for me? No way am I letting you continue to be the bad guy."
"Aww shucks, Valentine." Tobias teased. "You're going to give me a big head."
"As if it wasn't already big enough." She teased back. Tilting her head, she pretended to study him. "How do you lift it?"
"I work out." He winked then stood up. "I'm glad you came by."
"Me too." She held her hand out.
He shook his head. "You already hugged me. I figure that could be our thing."
"Our thing?"
Tobias pulled her back into his embrace.
"Yeah." He hugged her close. "Now that you won't let me be the big bad guy, I think this means you want us to be friends."
"Whoa. I'm merely a girl coming to thank a guy for saving her life." She teased. "Don't be thinking this means more than that."
"Sorry. Thought is already there." He countered, letting her go. "You're stuck with me now Chris whether you like it or not."
"Ugh, fine." She playfully grumbled. "I already deal with so many ego maniacs. What's one more?"
He opened his office door for her. "I knew you would agree."
"Just because you won this round doesn't mean you'll win them all, Dr. Carrick." Chris warned.
"Allow me to let you in on a little secret, Dr. Valentine," he leaned down close to whisper. "I win all the rounds that are important to me." Swiping up the folder he had previously been studying, he saluted her. "See you soon."
***************
And finally another miniseries "What if" for Thomas Hunt and my OC. I've been inspired by rewriting And Then I Met You and decided to do the same with their story in Second Chances. Here's a peek of Amanda actually telling Thomas she is pregnant instead of storming out of his office. I've yet to come up with a title I like for it, LOL, so we'll just wait on that.
Amanda ignored the words Thomas was saying. She didn't want to hear that he had fallen for an actress. All she could focus on was her pain turning into fury. How could he have moved on so quickly?
She wanted to hit him. Never in her life had she ever wanted to hurt someone so much as she did Thomas.
She felt sick to her stomach thinking about him and Kara. The nausea reminded her that she couldn't give in to her desire. She had someone else to think of. Someone who deserved every sacrifice she knew she would have to make to keep Thomas in their child's life.
"...and that's why I am sending Kara flowers." Thomas stepped closer to her when he noticed how pale she was. "Amanda?"
Her eyes lifted to his. Taking a deep breath, she blurted out the reason she came to his office.
"I'm pregnant."
She watched as her words slowly registered. The shock of her announcement caused him to collapse in the chair she had been sitting in.
"Pregnant." He breathed. "Are you certain?"
"Yes." Amanda clasped her hands in front of her. "I wouldn't have come here if I had not had it confirmed by a doctor."
Thomas knew she wouldn't have darkened his door for anything. If there was one characteristic they shared, it was pride. Neither ever wanted to appear foolish.
He got up and took a step toward her, uncertain how he was supposed to react. "What do you intend to do?"
Tears sparked her eyes. "Well, I am going to keep the baby and I hoped..." She bit her lip while lowering her eyes. Seems he had no intention to get back together with her. "I hope you will want to be a part of our child's life."
Thomas reached for her hand. Just because he wasn't sure whether or not to try a romantic relationship with her again, it didn't mean that he didn't want to be there for her.
"I will." He promised.
Her head jerked up and she noticed that there was no condemnation towards her reflected in his expression. Though the surprise announcement had knocked him for a loop, he was at least trying to do the right thing.
Though she had hoped to hear that he wanted to try again, she was vastly relieved to hear his promise.
"Are you planning on staying in L.A. for a while?" He asked.
"I could stay a few days." She wiped her tears with her fingers. A nervous laugh escaped her. "I wasn't sure if you would want me to after I told you about the baby."
"I would like to discuss how we will work this out." He squeezed her hand before urging her to sit down. "I have some meetings that I don't think I'll be able to get out of, but how about dinner tonight at my home?"
"I don't want to interrupt your date." She struggled with the word. "I can--"
"I'm not dating anyone." Thomas explained. "That's why I told you the flowers were more of a professional courtesy than romantic in nature."
"So you and Kara Bennett?" Amanda felt a brief spark of hope. "You're not--"
"No. She's one of the actresses on an upcoming film I'm directing." He replied.
"I see." She mumbled.
"Does 7:30 sound good?" He asked.
"Yes, of course."
"Should I pick you up?" He remembered she was staying at a hotel.
"No, I'll call for a car." She got to her feet again and held her hand out. "I know you have work and a lot to think over." Her lips curved into a sad smile. "But thank you for meeting with me and hearing me out."
He came around his desk and pulled her into a hug. Realizing how hard it was for her to come here, touched something within his heart. She seemed so fragile that he felt the need to comfort her.
Hugging her was the safest way in his opinion.
She trembled in his arms before returning his hug. Struggling with her tears, she laughed.
"Forgive me. I haven't had control of my emotions these last few months. These pregnancy hormones have a mind of their own."
Thomas handed her some tissues. "No need to apologize."
She thanked him as she dabbed under her eyes. "If I'm not crying then I am losing my temper. Poor Maxwell. I practically jumped down his throat for drinking the last Sprite on the way here."
His eyebrows lifted. "Maxwell came with you?"
"Everyone came with me." She shook her head in exasperation. "They were worried that you--" she winced. "They came to support me."
"I see." He replied. Reaching out, he gently grasped her arm. "I hate to rush you, but--"
"Of course." She gathered her things. "I'll see you this evening."
He smiled at her. "I look forward to it."
